A charity has pledged £40,000 to help support rural communities and businesses affected by the recent flooding.

The Prince’s Countryside Fund revealed the news on Monday (7 December).

It will be working alongside The Prince’s Business Emergency Resilience Group (BERG) to support the affected communities and help their long-term recovery.

Storm Desmond has caused widespread damage and disruption to the north of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales since it first hit on 4 December.

H&H has already reported on one horse that died because of the floods, despite rescue attempts, horses being led to safety with the help of a tractor and a donkey in Ireland that had a lucky escape.

“The full impact of the floods has yet to be realised, but many farms have lost livestock drowned in the floodwaters, or been affected by landslips, while feed and equipment has been lost,” said Claire Saunders from the charity.

“This is a catastrophic blow to rural businesses which are already hard pressed.

“Many will be relying on Christmas trade to turn a profit and we need to act swiftly to help them get back on track.”

“We’re urging farms and rural businesses in trouble to ask for help and contact the Farming Help charities and the Cumbria Community Foundation for advice and assistance.”

Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said on Monday that more than 3,500 properties had flooded across the country, with the majority in Cumbria.

In Lancaster, 55,000 properties lost power when a substation was flooded.

Horses have had to be rescued from flooded stables and fields and there have sadly been some fatalities.

More rain is also forecast for today (Wednesday 9 December) and tomorrow (Thursday 10 December), with weather and flood warnings in place for the midlands and the North.

The Prince’s Countryside Fund is releasing the money from its emergency coffers.

In total, £30,000 will be given to the Farming Help charities to aid farmers and rural communities in the area and to provide immediate financial assistance.

The Cumbria Community Foundation, which will be working with voluntary organisations to provide initial hardship grants of £500 to individuals, will receive £10,000.

“Flooding causes huge devastation to property, land and the morale of communities, and once flood waters recede and media attention wanes, people still need help to recover,” said Mike Still of BERG.

“We want to help hard hit rural communities get back on their feet and open for business.”

The Prince’s Countryside Fund has also started a fundraising appeal for people affected by the floods.

A 70-year-old pensioner has been charged with drink driving after two riders were injured and their horses killed in a road accident in Cumbria on Friday (1 July).

The collision happened where the junction 39 slip road off the M6 near Shap joins another road, at 6.15pm.

One of the riders, a man in his 60s, suffered serious injuries to his chest and leg and a minor injury to his head and was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for treatment.

The second rider, a woman in her 50s, sustained a minor knee injury and was also taken to hospital.

One of the horses died in the accident, while the other was badly injured and had to be put to sleep by a vet.

Police confirmed later that Harold Birtwhistle, 70, of Rectory Lane, Standish, Wigan, had been charged with drink-driving in his Jaguar car.

Birtwhistle also faces a count of driving without due care and attention and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and was bailed to appear before Carlisle Magistrates Court on 18 July.

The RSPCA has increased its presence at Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria this year, with 31 inspectors due to be on-site as part of a round-the-clock welfare team.

Four World Horse Welfare field officers will also be at the fair which opens today and runs until next Wednesday (9 June) and there will be five vets on site, four from Redwings and one from the Donkey Sanctuary.

RSPCA Chief Inspector Rob Melloy, said: “Last year we had 23 staff at Appleby. That was double the number we had the year before and we were very pleased with how it went, but it’s still a very small amount considering how many people and animals attend.

“This is a big event involving large numbers of horses, and other animals, and whilst the vast majority of people at the fair treat them very well, there is a hardened minority that cause problems. We want to do everything possible to ensure they can be dealt with.”

In 2007 a horse was drowned in the river at the fair and last year a man was stabbed. A horse was also found with serious injuries.

The annual horse fair attracts around 30,000 and 1,500 caravans and horse drawn vehicles to the area.

Cumbria and Durham police forces have warned drivers on the A66 to watch out for horse drawn transport in the run up to the fair, in an attempt to cut accidents on the road.

Two people have died and another has been serious injured in collisions involving horse drawn vehicles on the A66 in the past seven years.

The British Horse Society (BHS) has secured funding to open a long-awaited bridleway in the Eden Valley, Cumbria.

The 135km Eden Valley Loops — which runs from Kirkby Stephen to Ullswater — links with the Pennine Bridleway. It launches on 24 June after a 20-year battle for funding.

“This is the first recognised network of maintained routes for horses in Cumbria,” said Pam Bonnick of the Cumbria Bridleways Society.

An £18,500 grant from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and Defra will be used to pay for free route guides and way-markers.

BHS’s Heather Clatworthy, said: “Cumbria has good rights of way, but many routes are inaccessible at the moment.”

Alison Roper, from local trail riding company Stonetrails, said: “This is a massive step towards promoting the Eden Valley for horses.”

A five-year old registered fell mare has been returned to her owners after being stolen over seven months ago from fields in Cumbria.

Hettie was stolen on 6 June 2009 during the Appleby Horse Fair, a gathering of gypsies and travellers that takes place annually in Cumbria’s Eden Valley

She was returned to her rightful owners when a breeder in Kent became suspicious about the origins of a pony he had bought.

He had bought the mare in September from travellers at a horse fair in Kent, but soon became apprehensive when they failed to produce her passport.

After spotting an appeal for information about Hettie on the Fell Pony Society website, he got in touch with her owners.

“He asked if Hettie had any distinctive markings,” owner Derrick Byas told H&H, “and when he found out that she had been microchipped, decided to scan the pony he had bought.

“When the number scanned matched the number in our pony’s passport we were amazed and delighted.”

Arrangements were made to transport Hettie back to Cumbria, and she is now roaming her home turf with her mother and daughter.

“We have been extremely lucky,” continued Derrick. “It certainly shows the positives of the microchip legislation!”
