An 11-year-old rider who has been battling long Covid since December has made a triumphant return to the show ring, scoring a coveted Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) ticket in the process.

Ruby Diffey qualified the 138cm show pony Brookvale Lady Grantham (Maggie), who is produced by Brett and Tierney McKinnon, for the open show ponies at Hickstead by winning their class at British Show Pony Society (BSPS) area 9A before landing section reserve.

Ruby, who is in her first season of affiliated showing and has been partnered with Maggie for three months, fell ill just before Christmas last year.

“She was really sick and has been in and out of hospital,” said Ruby’s mother, Kate Diffey. “But showing has kept her going and her lessons with Brett on a Friday have been the carrot out in front of her. At one point Ruby was too weak to ride which meant we didn’t get to any of the early qualifiers, but while she still gets really tired, she’s pushed through as she adores riding Maggie.”

Prior to her win at BSPS Area 9A, Ruby had ridden Maggie to two seconds in RIHS qualifiers:

“Brett and Tierney have been so enthusiastic and encouraging,” added Kate. “They have helped Ruby so much, always jollying her along and making her laugh. Her school has also been incredibly supportive; they’ve let her miss out on swimming lessons so she can go riding as she doesn’t have the energy to do everything.”

This will be Ruby’s first trip to Hickstead.

“Maggie looks after Ruby, too; show pony classes are a bit step up for her, but the pony has her back,” Kate said.

“When she won Ruby looked over at me beaming, and we all had a hug at the side of the ring. She did sleep a lot on the way home from the show but she’s so excited to ride at the RIHS. At one point I did wonder if we’d get any shows in at all this year, but Ruby has been determined. She’s now on the road to recovery and wants to ride in some Horse of the Year Show qualifiers.”

SAFER warm-ups, better organisation, greater sustainability and improved employment conditions are some of the changes the horse world is likely to take forward as a result of the pandemic.

While almost two years of Covid-19 has meant stop-start competition, less atmosphere at some events and extra work for organisers and volunteers, it has also led to changes that have been embraced by competitors.

Of the disciplines, showjumping has taken the most improvements on board, with many centres having switched permanently to mandatory pre-entries and published running orders – a measure introduced by British Showjumping to reduce the number of people on site and the time they were there. Entries on the day had often previously meant long waits at shows, with competitors unsure when classes would start and finish.

“We used to take 100 phone calls on show days from competitors asking where classes were up to and now nine times out of 10, we don’t get a single call, it’s saved a lot of time,” Aintree International Equestrian Centre manager Carly Sage told H&H.

“It’s done showjumping the world of good as it’s made people a bit more organised. It should have happened years ago and it’s one measure that will definitely be staying for us.”

Reduced warm-up numbers have also been popular with riders, while many amateurs appreciated the help of a “pole steward” to put up practice fences.

“We’ve found the pros prefer to put their own poles up, but the amateurs like it – the only problem we have is getting the staff to do it,” Ms Sage said. “At the amateur and veteran championships, we charged competitors £1 each to help with costs and we had a lot of people saying ‘thank you very much’”.

Caz Light, who manages shows at Pyecombe, West Sussex, told H&H that although they have dropped-pole stewards, they continued to use four practice fences rather than two, which “makes a big difference”. They have also taken on board competitors’ desire for quieter warm-up facilities.

“It’s beneficial and it definitely works as long as people have somewhere to warm up on the flat first. Luckily, we have our indoor that people can warm up in before going through to have a jump,” she said.

The pandemic helped advance the use of digital resources and while some changes were quickly discarded – such as the time-consuming process of emailing competitors PDFs of dressage sheets – others have remained.

Physical scoreboards are becoming a thing of the past, as dressage and eventing organisers have tried to discourage competitors from gathering.

Duncan Whitney-Groom from dressage organiser Optimum Event Management told H&H he had not reinstated them at events, even after rules relaxed.

“I use QR codes and post the code around the venue – people can scan them and find the results on their phones. I like to get results out quickly and often by the time people have got back to the lorry and untacked, they are there,” he said.

At British Eventing (BE) competitions, measures designed to reduce contact have also become the new normal, as they were found to streamline processes.

“Start fees being combined with the entry fee and print your own numbers are measures that are likely to stay,” a spokesman for BE told H&H. “At the moment, protocols for dressage-sheet collection, information points and how event secretaries work will be up to the organiser.”

Sarah Skillin, who is on the organising committee for Little Downham, one of the busiest BE venues that typically runs four events a year, told H&H they had experimented with various measures during the pandemic to minimise contact, including a fence-judging app, but the one enduring change was doing away with score collectors.

“We have re-deployed score collectors to pick up dressage sheets and time cards and we have cross-country scores collated centrally by someone listening in to the radios. While the fence-judging app was nice, we realised we didn’t actually need it,” she said.

Measures, such as additional stewards to ensure social distancing and enforce one-way systems, have been pared down since the peak of the pandemic, but keeping volunteers happy while having to reduce perks is something organisers have had to juggle and it is one area that has required innovation.

“We stopped doing refreshments and breakfast on arrival for volunteers which was met with fury!” Miss Skillin said. “Partway through the pandemic, we invested in individual thermos flasks for volunteers, with a morning’s worth of tea and coffee, and the flask to keep as a thank-you gift.”

This also helped the event mitigate the use of disposables – something many businesses were trying to do before the pandemic caused a flood of used gloves and masks and a return to throwaway cups.

“We have tried to be sustainable with our measures and we don’t want to keep buying polystyrene cups, but Covid rules said we couldn’t take mugs from people and refill them, so the flasks worked out well from a sustainability point of view,” Miss Skillin said. “When handing out food, we’re also using recyclable hot boxes and wooden cutlery. It’s amazing how much extra paper and printing Covid has reduced as well.”

Global crises are often a catalyst for change and away from competition, the pandemic has also helped shine a spotlight on illegal work practices within the industry.

Lucy Katan, executive director of the British Grooms Association (BGA) told H&H the situation had forced the industry to have a “hard look at itself”.

“Many grooms and employers missed out on access to thousands of pounds’ worth of furlough payments and business funding,” she said. “This consequently has put a focus on the importance of correct employment, and we have noted an increase in awareness from grooms about their own work situations and their rights.”

She said the number of grooms opting for income protection insurance has also increased, with 75% of the BGA’s members now covered, while the Equestrian Employers Association had also seen a sharp increase in the use of its contract creator – implying good working practices were being taken up.

“Overall, it seems that professionalism and compliance is improving as a result of Covid – but the pace of this still needs to increase as unfortunately, illegal employment situations still are far too common,” she said.

Much of the nation has become familiar with Zoom since 2020 and the use of remote platforms is also something that has become embedded within equestrianism.

At previous FEI general assemblies, national federations unable to attend in person could watch online, but had to defer their vote to another national federation via proxy. Now, as a result of the pandemic, the FEI has introduced a permanent remote voting system.

“The national federations voted at the 2021 general assembly to approve removal of proxies as of 2022, precisely because all national federations can now attend, in person or virtually, and cast their votes,” a spokesman said.

The pandemic also sped up the organisation’s move to a new, digital sponsorship model.

“There has been the realisation for some time now that sponsors want something more than just the ‘traditional’ sponsorship packages, and digital platforms can give sponsors more control over data and results,” the spokesman said.

“The move to the digital sponsorship platform would have happened anyway, but Covid and the subsequent cancellation of events pushed it through faster.”

The equestrian world is urged to “exercise caution and remain vigilant” as Covid cases soar.

Equestrian activity can continue across the devolved nations and work is under way to challenge how indoor and covered arenas are viewed, should there be another lockdown. British Equestrian, its member bodies and the British Horse Society are in consultation with Government on this second point.

“Collectively, existing research findings have been compiled, and a new study has also been commissioned, which puts forward a strong case that the application of the smoke-free (premises and enforcement) regulations 2006 on equestrian riding facilities does not take into account their size and volume,” said a statement from British Equestrian.

“The submission is currently under review with Defra and we’ll keep up the momentum to try and keep our facilities open should there be another lockdown.

“In the meantime, any equestrian premises which use indoor or covered riding facilities are encouraged to write to their MPs outlining their concerns for their business and the resulting impact on equine welfare, should any or all of the country come under lockdown.”

New post-Christmas restrictions have been announced for Wales and Scotland. Equestrian activity can continue, provided mitigating measures are in place to comply with the new rules.

From Boxing Day in Wales, up to 50 people can attend outdoor events and up to 30 can attend indoor events. A maximum of six people will be allowed to meet in public premises.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said today (22 December) that there is an exception for team sports, where up to 50 spectators will be able to gather in addition to those taking part. He added that there is also an exception for events involving children.

The restrictions mean that in reality, most sporting events will be taking place behind closed doors, such as the Welsh Grand National (27 December).

In Scotland, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced restrictions as of Boxing Day that will be in place for three weeks at public events.

These include attendance limits of up to 100 standing and up to 200 seated at indoor events; and up to 500 seated or standing outdoors. All events will operate a 1m physical distancing requirement, and indoor contact sports should not take place.

Covid passes are already required for entry into certain sporting events and venues across the UK. The rules vary slightly in each devolved nation and visitors planning on attending racing over the festive period are urged to check the rules for each meeting and racecourse before they travel.

“The situation is rapidly changing and with differing requirements across the nations, so I’d urge the equestrian community to exercise caution and remain vigilant,” said British Equestrian chief executive Jim Eyre.

“It’s important you follow the news in your area to make sure you’re up to date with any rules and guidance in place during the festive period and beyond.

“We’ll continue to monitor any updates and publish guidance to ensure activity can continue, provided it’s within any Government requirements. Keep public mixing to a minimum, make sure you test before meeting others, wear a face-covering indoors and practice good hand hygiene in order to keep yourself and those around you safe.”

The specific rules for England, Wales and Scotland are as follows:

Wales

• View the latest rules from the Welsh Government
• The guidance from the Welsh Government for employers, businesses and organisations operating under alert level 0 was updated on 20 December, and any equestrian facilities and businesses are encouraged to review the document and regularly check for any further updates
• The Welsh government also has guidance for businesses and organisations on reasonable measures action cards to cover a number of facilities and events, which are updated regularly and should be useful for any equestrian businesses

Scotland

• In Scotland, the First Minister announced restrictions, which come in on 26 December for a period of three weeks around public events
• Attendance of up to 100 for indoor standing events, up to 200 for indoor seated events, and up to 500 seated or standing outdoors
  All events will operate a 1m physical distancing requirement
  Indoor contact sports should not take place
• sportscotland has issued further guidance on what this means for sport
• From 27 December, people are being asked to limit their contacts, restrict gatherings to groups of no more than three households and to stay home as much as possible. Bars and restaurants should only operate on a table service basis where alcohol is served

England

• The Prime Minister has confirmed that there will be no new Covid restrictions for England before Christmas but has not ruled out any further measures afterwards
• It has also been announced that people infected with Covid in England can stop self-isolating after seven days, instead of the previous 10, if they show two negative lateral flow tests on days six and seven

This Q&A is designed to help answer some of the questions those living and working in the equestrian world may have during the current situation. We will endeavour to update this with any fresh questions and new information that comes to light as the situation develops...

England has moved to “Plan B” coronavirus restrictions following the rapid spread of the Omicron variant across the UK.

This is not another lockdown. Sport can continue and shops, restaurants, pubs and bars can remain open. But there are new measures in place to mitigate the spread.

The key points to be aware of are:

• Face coverings are compulsory in most public indoor venues as of today (10 December), with exceptions for places where it is not practical to wear one (eating, drinking or exercising)
• People should be using lateral flow tests, particularly before entering high-risk settings involving others that they wouldn’t normally come into contact with, or when visiting a vulnerable person
• From Monday (13 December), those who can will be advised to work from home
• From Wednesday (15 December), the NHS Covid Pass on the NHS app will become mandatory for entry into places where large crowds gather. This includes unseated indoor events with 500+ attendees, unseated outdoor events with 4,000+ people and any event with a crowd of 10,000+. People will need to show proof of two vaccine doses via the app; proof of a negative lateral flow test will also be accepted. Racecourses and the London International Horse Show are included in this.
• All adults who are able to be vaccinated are encouraged to do so

So what do the current restrictions in England mean for horse owners and those working in the industry?

Can I ride my horse?

Yes, you can. This is not a lockdown and sport – including riding – is able to continue.

My horse is on DIY livery: am I allowed to care for him?

Yes. Regular handwashing and biosecurity continue to be advised. The Government is asking people to consider their own risks when taking into account close contact with others.

How should I prepare in case I fall ill and can’t care for my horse?

It is law that anyone with a positive test must self-isolate for 10 days if they test positive. Rules surrounding close contacts vary depending on vaccination status and the variant. All close contacts of someone who has tested positive for Omicron must self-isolate, regardless of vaccination status. Click here for the full NHS self-isolation guide

Previous British Equestrian advice from earlier in the pandemic recommends making a plan with your yard owner or manager, or your fellow liveries, for what will happen if you’re unable to get to the yard.

The BHS recommends all owners prepare a care plan for each horse, so a friend or member of yard staff can take over your horse’s care if necessary. This should include things like which rugs he wears, what he eats, any medication, where you keep your equipment and his normal routine.

Other tips include ensuring you have sufficient supplies and keeping in touch with your fellow liveries and yard owner through a WhatsApp group.

My horse is on full livery: am I allowed to go and ride him?

Yes, you can. You may also use the arena at your yard and travel your horse for competition, training and leisure riding.

Are we allowed to hack out under the current restrictions?

Yes you can (see point above: “Can I ride my horse?” for more details).

Can I call the vet, farrier or other healthcare provider out to my horse?

Yes, you can. Again, provided Plan B rules are followed. This is not a lockdown.

Should there be extra biosecurity measures in place on yards at this time?

Employers have a duty of care to their staff and the Government is also encouraging everyone to wash their hands frequently to reduce transmission of the virus. The British Horse Society recommends following and publicising the latest Government advice to all who have access to a yard, as well as yard owners updating the business’s risk assessment as required.

It also urges yards to ensure there is sufficient access to appropriate working hygienic hand washing and drying facilities and to provide sanitiser at key location points on the premises.

What will happen if the grooms on the yard have to self-isolate?

If staff or liveries on the yard need to self-isolate, it is vitally important that they do so. Be prepared, speak with your yard owner about contingency plans and practise good biosecurity at all times. Communication is very important and the British Horse Society has some useful information on what to consider when making a contingency plan here.

This includes yard owners thinking about freelance cover and giving current staff additional training to cover roles that might not be part of their current job.

Are we allowed to transport our horses away from home?

Yes, there are no restrictions on transport.

Can I continue to have lessons at home or my livery yard?

Yes, you can, in line with Covid-safe protocols.

Can I travel to another place for competition or training?

Yes, you can. Competition and training is allowed to continue. Venues may well have their own rules, so it is advisable to check these before you travel and respect their regulations.

Can I have a lesson at a riding school?

Yes, riding schools are open. The British Horse Society’s advice when restrictions ended this summer was for centres to take a “ cautious but sensible approach”. Be aware that individual centres may have their own restrictions on their own circumstances, so it is best to check when booking a lesson and it is important to respect the rules in place at each venue.

What do I need to do before attending the London International Horse Show, going racing or point-to-pointing?

All visitors to racecourses and the London International Horse Show will need a NHS Covid pass, which shows proof of double vaccination or negative lateral flow test. This is obtained via the NHS app. Government rules surrounding your own health and close contacts still apply. View the full London International Horse Show Covid rules.

Point-to-points remain open to the public. The officials’ area should not be entered by anyone who has not got a reason to be there (i.e. officials and participants only), and everyone within it should wear a mask. In all other areas, individuals should take personal responsibility and wear masks if and when appropriate (for example in the betting ring if it is crowded).

I’m a freelance groom, is this going to affect me and my income?

It may well do — you must follow Government health advice even though it is a worrying time when freelancers are not entitled to statutory sick pay. However, yards may need freelancers to help cover staff sickness and/or self-isolation periods, plus the Government has announced some measures in a bid to ease financial pressures. These include making it easier to apply for Universal Credit. The situation is changing rapidly and the British Grooms Association has more advice here

I run a yard — what happens if my staff cannot work through sickness or self-isolation?

The Government has announced it will help businesses with fewer than 250 employees by funding two weeks of statutory sick pay. Make a contingency plan as to what to do if staff do need to have time off — the British Horse Society and Equestrian Employers Association have some helpful advice here and here

What happens if my staff need to take time off to care for their children?

All employees have a right to emergency time off during working hours where a dependant is concerned. The amount of time should be reasonable to the situation (usually days rather than longer term) and there is no statutory right to be paid for this — whether you are or not comes down to your employer. Can I travel to view or buy a horse?

Visitors to the ExCel for the London International Horse Show (16-20 December) are asked to play their part in helping reduce the spread of Covid by adhering to new rules.

All those attending the show, which has moved from its old home at Olympia this year, will have to show proof of having had two doses of a Covid vaccination at least 14 days beforehand, presence of Covid antibodies or evidence, via email or text, of a negative lateral flow test within 48 hours of the event.

“This will be a quick visual check at the point of entry to the venue and no personal data will be recorded or stored,” a spokesman for the show said.

“If you are a UK resident you can show your vaccination status via the NHS Covid pass on the NHS app, or a paper copy, a pass written by your doctor or from the NHS website directly, not your card provided at the time of vaccination. International visitors can show equivalent proof from their home country.”

All visitors are asked to be respectful of others, and not to attend if they are experiencing Covid symptoms such as a high temperature, new continuous cough or loss or change to senses of taste and smell. Anyone isolating, or has been in close contact with anyone who has Covid or is showing symptoms is also asked to stay away.

As part of the London horse show Covid rules, masks must be worn in all areas of the venue.

“Both the London International Horse Show and ExCeL London are looking forward to welcoming you to a safe and secure event this Christmas,” organisers said.

“We are making every effort to provide a safe environment for all our visitors. This includes ensuring there are wide aisles to reduce crowd density and improve attendee flow. There will also be multiple entrances which will enable management of queues. There will be hygiene reminders to regularly wash hands throughout the venue, an enhanced cleaning regime during show-open periods and, finally, contactless payment will be encouraged.

“We can all play our part in keeping each other safe.”

The show plans to publish a Covid code of conduct and list of related FAQs nearer the event.

Antibody fragments produced by horses have been shown to be highly potent in neutralising Covid-19.

Research in Brazil has demonstrated that the neutralising antibodies produced after inoculating horses with the Covid-19 spike protein were up to 150 times more concentrated that those in human convalescent plasma.

In developing countries that do not have effective vaccination programmes, the use of horse antibodies could be an especially effective tool in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, as horses can produce the plasma more cheaply and at higher volumes than in other species.

The research by Cunha et al, published in the journal iScience this week (23 October), is the most recent of five studies into equine Covid-19 antibodies, with work also having been carried out in Argentina, China and Costa Rica.

Cunha et al’s study took plasma from immunised horses and used the digestive enzyme pepsin to purify the antibodies, yielding an F(ab’)2 preparation, an antibody fragment that has two antigen-binding regions.

Hamsters were then used in a challenge study — a type of controlled infection trial.

The use of the equine F(ab’)2 preparation was found to reduce viral load in the hamsters’ pulmonary tissues, while improvement in clinical signs of the virus was also demonstrated by significant weight gain.

The study’s authors said that while more than 20 Covid vaccines had been approved for human use in different countries, the world remained “far from a solution” to the pandemic owing to the “lack of antiviral treatments” for infected individuals.

“The development of virus-neutralising purified hyperimmune globulins produced in horses or llamas may be an approach to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection. The use of llamas to develop passive immunisation therapies is still experimental and limited by animal availability. On the other hand, hyperimmune serum, immunoglobulins or IgG fragments produced in horses have been used to treat many diseases, such as rabies, tetanus, and snake envenomation, among others,” they said.

“Brazil, such as many other countries, has a large established capacity to produce equine hyperimmune globulin preparations for a range of indications, which makes the production of such products against SARS-CoV-2 highly feasible.”

A clinical study this year by Lopardo et al demonstrated improvement in patients infected with Covid-19 after treatment with equine antibodies. It was found to be especially effective in severe cases.

Cunha et al’s study differed from previous work in that it used a different vaccination strategy on the horses, aiming to maximise the formation of the neutralising antibodies.

Their serum was found to be effective against both the Gamma and Brazilian variants of the virus.

The study’s authors said the strategy could be easily reproduced “anywhere in the world” and “could rapidly be tested as a therapy for Covid-19”.

Work on an equine hyperimmune serum in Argentina recently received emergency approval after clinical studies demonstrated a 45% reduction in mortality.

One horse can typically be bled up to six times per year without causing suffering and the study’s authors estimated that 80 horses could produce 100,000 doses of the Covid antibody therapy annually.

Horses are regularly used around the world to produce anti-venoms as well as anti-viral therapies for diseases such as rabies.

The organisers of the Voltaire Design Liverpool International Horse Show say they are “devastated” to have to cancel the 2021-22 event, but that it is the “only responsible thing to do”.

The event was due to run at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool from New Year’s Eve to 3 January. But organisers have announced, with “huge regret”, that they have made the “very difficult decision” to cancel.

“With the ever-changing Covid-19 environment and with the recent announcements made by the Government and the Liverpool Health Protection Board, which oversees the city’s response to the pandemic, as event organisers the risk associated with responsibly staging an indoor event of this kind after Christmas, with respect to members of the public, and the knock-on implication of this risk to our loyal partners, suppliers, retailers, riders and their guests, is just too high at this time,” a statement released last night (25 October) read.

Show founder Nina Barbour said the team was “naturally devastated”.

“We can only hope that our loyal supporters understand our genuine reasons for being forced to cancel this year’s event,” she said.

“The reality of the situation is that we have to measure the risks of moving forward with an indoor event in early January, with the facts and concerns that we currently face whilst having to carefully negotiate the ongoing uncertainty relating to this pandemic.

“We feel that the only responsible thing to do is to make this decision now, and it goes without saying that we remain fully committed to supporting equestrian sport moving forwards and we will be throwing our energy into making all the exciting events that we have planned for 2022 truly the best experiences that we can for everyone involved.”

All Liverpool International Horse Show ticket buyers will be contacted, and all will be eligible for full refunds.

THE pandemic has highlighted challenges faced by owners of horses and ponies at risk of laminitis.

A study, COVID-19 impacts equine welfare: Policy implications for laminitis and obesity, conducted by Scotland’s Rural College in collaboration with the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, aimed to assess how lockdown affected the management and welfare of horses and ponies prone to laminitis and obesity.

Following interviews with owners, farriers and vets, researchers concluded steps taken to protect public health during the pandemic – including reduced exercise, turning horses away, and limiting yard visits – had the potential to compromise the welfare of at-risk horses and ponies, and there was a need for guidance to highlight risk factors of laminitis and obesity, in the event of future lockdowns.

PhD student Ashley Ward, who led the study, told H&H participants felt guidelines issued by the Government and governing bodies were not attuned to the needs of horses with laminitis.

“People were finding themselves in a position where they were trying to stay in line with Government guidance at the same time as balancing their horse’s welfare,” she said.

“What we can take from this study is the guidelines we give to owners need to be really clear on what they can do for their laminitis- and obesity-prone horses.

“There needs to be a specific policy that can inform owners if they choose to take a certain action during a lockdown, what implications this might have on horse health and how to combat that. It’s all very well saying don’t turn your horse out because it will get fat, but owners need to be involved in the conversation about what alternatives there are.”

David Rendle, chair of the British Equine Veterinary Association’s health and medicines committee, told H&H the study is “multi-faceted” and highlighted a number of challenges faced by owners, farriers and vets during the pandemic.

“The study provides testimony that many horses spent additional time at grazing as a result of Covid guidelines. Vets have been concerned throughout the pandemic that increased turnout during periods of good weather could tip laminitis-prone animals over the edge into clinical laminitis,” he said, adding BEVA has seen particularly high numbers of laminitis cases this year and last, but it was impossible to quantify the contribution of the pandemic.

“The fundamental issue is the unacceptably high proportion of equines perpetually close to tipping over the edge because of obesity and associated metabolic disease.

“Most horses gain some weight over the summer, pandemic or no-pandemic, but what is often not appreciated is their need to lose weight during winter to restore their metabolism to normal prior to the next grazing season. It is important this year, as every year, owners engage with vets in establishing whether their horses are at risk and discuss plans for controlled weight loss programmes through autumn and winter.”

World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers told H&H given the changes brought by the pandemic it was “not that surprising” the welfare of at-risk horses and ponies could have been compromised.

“The answer is not necessarily about more guidance because quality, accessible information on avoiding obesity and laminitis was abundant prior to lockdown. Many organisations – including the National Equine Welfare Council – work together to bring the latest information to owners and are always open to fresh opportunities to do so.” he said.

“At the start of the first lockdown World Horse Welfare, among others, provided frequently updated advice online and across social media covering the management of horses during restrictions, making any changes gradually and focusing on non-ridden exercise and weight management.”

Mr Owers added that many owners may have been unable to follow advice for reasons such as a lack of clarity on essential travel, restrictions on routine veterinary and farriery services, or yard access.

“The first lockdown also unfortunately coincided with a period of strong grass growth. What’s important is to make sure we learn lessons from the pandemic and expecting the unexpected has to be part of the planning with our horses.”

World Horse Welfare is highlighting the potential dangers of buying horses unseen, after a “stunning schoolmaster” and a bombproof hack turned out to be not at all as advertised.

Laddie and Angel were bought without a viewing, from a dealer 500 miles away from their new owner in Aberdeen, in March. Part-thoroughbred Laddie was a “sad sight” on arrival.

“He was dreadfully underweight and, having been recently fully clipped by the dealer, his ribs were also clearly visible with his hip bone and spine protruding through his skin – a stark contrast to the advertised stunning, schoolmaster horse that was depicted in the videos and pictures sent by the dealer to the potential buyer,” a World Horse Welfare spokesman said.

“Angel was in good body condition when she arrived in Scotland, but was nervous, skittish and flighty – not the bombproof hacking pony advertised.”

The buyers asked World Horse Welfare for help, and some months later, they have a bright future ahead.

“The new owners bought two horses unseen from a dealer and paid for them to be transported up to a remote area of the Highlands,” said World Horse Welfare field officer Leanne McPake.

“Laddie came off the lorry a sorry soul who was in poor body condition — he was nothing like the photos and videos seen on his advert. Angel, although in good body condition, was spooky and nervous, not the bombproof pony advertised. The owners very sensibly recognised their own limits and the care needed to rehabilitate Laddie and Angel so they asked World Horse Welfare to help and both ponies were then signed over into our care.

“Laddie has made a remarkable recovery and is ready to start work with his groom at Belwade Farm. Angel has settled into her new surroundings and has responded well to the rehabilitation and handling process. Keep an eye on our website for updates and rehoming of this lucky pair.”

World Horse Welfare said buying unseen has “become the norm for many” during the coronavirus pandemic, but warned against it.

EQUESTRIANS are urged to support major events as “freedom day” lifts most of the remaining Covid restrictions, in a “welcome day for the industry”

From 19 July in England, limits on social contact ended, with no restrictions on indoor or outdoor gatherings. Most restrictions have also been lifted in Scotland, and those in Wales have been eased, while Northern Ireland was due to review its guidance on 22 July.

Despite the changes in guidance, British Equestrian (BEF) is recommending that everyone in the industry “remains vigilant, respects others, and follows hygiene measures to keep everyone safe and reduce the chances of transmission of the virus”.

One of the first major events to benefit from the changes was the Royal International Horse Show (21–25 July).

Hickstead director Lizzie Bunn told H&H the team was “right to be cautious” regarding the jumping championships that replaced the Derby meeting last month, when the planned lifting of restrictions was delayed.

“But this time ‘freedom day’ has arrived just as we are about to open our gates for the Royal International Horse Show,” she said. “What this means for us is that we don’t have to stick to our cap of 4,000 tickets per day, though we do expect the show to be quieter than in a normal year – usually our box office is open for at least six months, rather than a few weeks, plus the showjumping is running as a two-star instead of the usual CSIO5*.

“On the positive side, being quieter means it’s a great way for spectators to ease themselves back into attending a large-scale event – we have a 120-acre site so there’ll be loads of room for everyone to move around to watch the various rings and browse our tradestands, plus we have two huge open grandstands with plenty of seating. What we do hope is that lots of equestrian fans come to Hickstead this week, as we’ve done our utmost to put on our three main fixtures this year, and we’ve made ticketing much cheaper than usual, with under-16s going free. All equestrian venues have had a torrid 18 months, and now that shows can recommence we need as many people to support them as possible.”

British Showjumping has retained some of its show protocols and amended others. Entries must still be made, and paid for, online in advance, and times released before the competition.

The number of riders allowed in the warm-up has been increased to eight, with up to two people allowed in to adjust practice fences. For classes at 1.40m and above, one person per rider is allowed in the warm-up to alter jumps. Warm-up areas should be monitored by a steward or marshal.

All other restrictions are lifted, although show organisers are urged to continue measures aimed at preventing spread of the virus.

British Dressage (BD) protocols will remain, during the “current wave of infections”, and although BD’s guidance is now advisory rather than mandatory restrictions, “it is still incumbent upon all members and stakeholders to continue to act responsibly in order to protect all of the sport’s participants”.

Guidance includes a recommendation to be vaccinated, and allows centres to distribute score sheets on show days in a controlled and socially distant manner.

The British Horse Society is advising riding schools that parents and spectators can now return to watch lessons, and that centres are no longer required to record details of participants, spectators or helpers. But all attendees should be encouraged to “check in” with the NHS QR code to help trace close contacts in the event of a positive case, and all centres must still carry out Covid risk assessments for all activities.

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) may notice the biggest benefit; H&H has reported that many RDA groups have not been able to reopen as many participants are shielding or need to be supported to ride in a manner that is not socially distant.

“The lifting of legal restrictions will definitely enable more of our groups to get going again and welcome back more participants,” RDA head of communication and insight Caroline Ward told H&H.

“Hopefully more of our school groups will be able to return to off-site activities – which has been very restrictive for many groups. We can also now support riders with volunteers on either side, which means more participants will be able to get back in the saddle. The lifting of restrictions will be a confidence booster to many – both participants and volunteers – and we hope to be back to our usual levels of activity soon.”

A north London school has drafted in horses to help provide post-Covid mental health support.

East Finchley’s Archer Academy, a community secondary school, has been trialling equine-assisted therapy for vulnerable pupils.

The school funded three sessions with equine therapist Lotte Carlebach, who brought in ponies to help students interact in a “mindful way” and help develop their self-awareness, communication skills and empathy.

A spokesman for the school said it takes students’ mental health “incredibly seriously” and has successfully applied for grants to supply a number of initiatives, which also included broadening school counselling provision, running art therapy sessions, training senior students to become peer mentors and training staff to become mental health first-aiders.

The school believes the equine therapy has already had an impact on pupils’ wellbeing, and is now hoping to raise money to fund more sessions.

Senior assistant headteacher Jo Mahoney, who is spearheading the programme, said: “Covid-19 has been hard for everyone, but it’s fair to say that some of our students, particularly those with learning difficulties or complex emotional needs, have struggled more than others.

“We are determined to do everything we possibly can to help them settle back into school life, and overcome the trauma of the last 18 months, and equine therapy is a brilliant solution.”

Jo added that it had been “wonderful to watch the students interacting with the ponies” at the 800-pupil academy.

“It has a truly calming effect on them, which is just what they need after the upheaval of the last year or so,” she said. “But it’s more than that; Lotte is also teaching them about the ponies’ herd dynamics which supports them to navigate the group dynamics they encounter at school. For students who don’t find this easy or instinctive, and who have spent too much time isolated at home, this is a brilliant way to learn.”

H&H finds out what new Japanese regulations concerning travellers from the UK will mean for our equestrian teams heading for Tokyo within weeks

BRITAIN’S Olympic and Paralympic squads are preparing for all eventualities after news broke that athletes and support crews arriving from the UK will be subject to additional stringent Covid precautions.

The UK has been added to Japan’s red list, owing to the Delta variant. There were initial concerns that athletes across the board who had been in the UK within the previous 14 days of arriving in Japan would face a mandatory six-day hotel isolation period.

The situation is fluid, but the latest updates have abated these fears. Instead, UK arrivals for the Games are likely to be restricted to not mixing with other squads for the first three days in Japan, rather than having to undergo strict hotel isolation for six days.

A British Equestrian spokesman told H&H the British Olympic Association (BOA) is working on this.

“The BOA is in direct dialogue with the International Olympic Committee and Tokyo organising committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to resolve the situation, so that all Team GB can arrive and get underway without the need to quarantine or isolate, or with limited quarantine or isolation,” she said.

“The BOA is very positive of a workable solution and are advising we carry on with preparations along those lines. Our team is, of course, preparing for plans b, c, d and e – as has been the way for everything in the build-up to Tokyo. But at present, there are no changes to our preparations or travel plans.”

All those at the Games have to follow rules set out in “playbooks” and everyone arriving in Japan is subject to particularly strict restrictions during their first 14 days in the country. These include only being allowed to go to pre-approved destinations and no use of public transport or visits to restaurants or tourist areas.

The new quarantine restrictions, which are in addition to the strict rules already set out in the playbooks, have potentially wide-reaching implications for others working at the Games, with last-minute changes to travel arrangements to factor in any extra quarantine or isolation requirements.

In other Olympic news, there will be no overseas ticket holders at this year’s Games, but the spectator limit has now been set at 50% of venue capacity, up to a maximum of 10,000 domestic fans. A decision on Paralympic Games spectators is set to be made by 16 July.

“The situation will be monitored in Japan and abroad, including the status of the different variants of the coronavirus, and all necessary action will be taken promptly,” said a joint statement from the five parties involved in organising the Games.

H&H speaks to the new Riding for the Disabled Association chair of trustees, to find out how the charity and its groups are recovering from the effects of Covid, and what are the focuses for the future

THE Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has welcomed a new chair of trustees as the organisation strives to help groups out of the pandemic, and then looks to the future.

Last week the charity appointed Rachel Medill, a former event rider and founder of vulnerable children’s charity Ride High, whose immediate focus is supporting RDA groups to return to full capacity.

Ms Medill told H&H the pandemic had been “debilitating” for the organisation. Since the first lockdown, only 50% of RDA groups have been able to reopen and only 15% of the charity’s pre-Covid participants have returned so far. H&H has reported on issues faced by groups, including many members and volunteers having to shield during the pandemic, and social distancing issues for riders who require help mounting and dismounting or sidewalkers.

It is hoped all remaining RDA groups will reopen by September, and in the meantime initiatives have been launched including “Tea with a Pony” for individuals with dementia, and “The Grand Day Out”, funded by the Peoples’ Postcode Lottery, where groups host outdoor activities such as picnics.

“In many cases the pandemic has been the most terrible experience, but it has also brought us insight into some new things we might be able to do to help more people,” said Ms Medill.

Looking forward, Ms Medill said the key areas she hopes to focus on are raising awareness of volunteering opportunities and increasing funding.

“Volunteering can take on so many forms; helping run a group, administration or being a treasurer or helping with fundraising. Every RDA group has its own trustees, and being a member is great fun. You can bring skills you’ve learnt in your professional career to really help,” she said.

“Funding is another big issue. If we can show the profound impact RDA has on people’s lives – not just in the short term but in the long term; it’s about building self-confidence and skills, as well as physical coordination – I think that will help bring funding at national and local level.”

Ms Medill also hopes to encourage more coaches into the RDA.

“We’re going to be looking at how we use our training centre in Warwickshire to provide more training for coaches as well as for those running our initiatives like Tea with a Pony,” she said.

RDA group Horsehills in Surrey, which closed during the first lockdown, reopened two weeks ago and is hosting weekly sessions for one of its two usual school groups. Chair Trudi Eustance told H&H that while being closed had been “difficult”, the group is looking forward to welcoming its other school group back in September.

“We’ve struggled for volunteers as some went on to do different things while we were closed, such as helping at food banks, but we hope more will return in September,”

she said.

“We’ve had to buy more equipment, and we’ve invested a lot into training but we were lucky as we received some donations. What I think would disappoint everybody is if we get another spike [in Covid cases] and go into another lockdown.”

European travel restrictions have affected British and British-based riders hoping to compete at top-level events on the Continent. H&H finds out who has managed to find ways safely to get to the competitions, and how

PANDEMIC challenges continue for top riders but there is hope as competitors find ways to make the 2021 season work.

Two British riders and a few British-based international riders have found ways to comply with German travel restrictions and compete at Luhmühlen (17-20 June).

Exceptions were announced for elite athletes last week but British Equestrian (BEF) eventing performance manager Dickie Waygood told H&H this only reached him on Saturday (12 June), by which time most Brits who might have taken advantage were already at Bicton.

“If anyone had a problem at Bicton, it could have been an option but it was a step too far, unfortunately,” he said.

Mollie Summerland (pictured) is entered in the CCI5* on 12-year-old gelding Charly Van Ter Heiden, with whom she finished 10th at their five-star debut at Pau 2020.

Germany’s travel restrictions broadly mean most people cannot enter the country if they have been in the UK within the last 10 days.

Mollie based herself with Dutch Olympic rider Tim Lips in the Netherlands, to comply with the rule, and explained why it was important for her, as a young professional rider, to take on the opportunity.

“I only have one horse at this high level and you never know if you’re going to be in this position again, with a horse that is fit, sound and feeling amazing,” she said.

She added Pau was a “fantastic experience”, as a rider and in terms of building her businesses as it led to new horses joining her string.

As her younger horses needed downtime after their three-day runs at Houghton, the possibility and reasons for going to Luhmühlen as a rider gaining valuable experience and with her business head on, made sense.

David Doel was already planning on competing at Renswoude in the Netherlands (2-6 June) with two other horses, not bound for Luhmühlen, before the German travel ban was announced. Those horses returned home after Renswoude while David remained in the Netherlands and was joined by his three CCI5* rides: Dunges Don Perignon, Shannondale Quest and Carneyhaugh Rua.

He told H&H the cancellation of the British CCI5*s means horses at the level had already missed opportunities, which is why he decided to head to Luhmühlen, and his owners have been “so supportive”.

New Zealand’s Tim and Jonelle Price, whose entered horses include 2019 and 2018 winners Ascona M and Faerie Dianimo and Tim’s 2018 Burghley winner Ringwood Sky Boy, have been out of the UK for long enough to comply with Germany’s travel restrictions. British-based Australian multiple Olympic medal winner Andrew Hoy, who has Vassily De Lassos and Bloom Des Hauts Crets in the CCI4*-S has been quarantining in Belgium.

The German travel restrictions were raised at the FEI Sports Forum (1-2 June), as most horses will be quarantining in Aachen ahead of their flights to Tokyo from Liège Airport in Belgium.

FEI director of games operations Tim Hadaway told the forum that these challenges were “being addressed at the very highest level” and a British Equestrian spokesman has since confirmed that horses can quarantine in the UK.

“All of our [horses] across the disciplines will be quarantining in this country and all arrangements have been made with Defra to get their approval in line with the requirements,” she said. “The exception will be European-based horses, who will have the option to do their quarantine in Aachen with the other nations.”

French travel restrictions and vaccination timings mean there will be no British riders at Le Mans CDI4* (17-20 June), but there was better news for the British showjumpers competing at La Baule Nations Cup (11 June).

A spokesman for British Equestrian told H&H that the showjumpers were already on the continent, so there was no issue with entering France.

Tokyo is rapidly approaching and the final deadline for Olympic minimum eligibility requirements (MER) is Monday (21 June).

There has been a reshuffle of Olympic dressage places in recent weeks after several nations gave up their Olympic tickets.

New Zealand has withdrawn its individual dressage spots from both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, while Norway has also withdrawn its individual Olympic spot. This has resulted in a late call-up for Italy and Malaysia.

This will be the first time Malaysia has competed in any equestrian competitions at the Olympics and their top rider, Qabil Ambak, is seeking his final Olympic MER at Le Mans CDI4* in France this week on Delatio.

This is the first Games that Ireland has qualified a team, instead of sending individual riders. The retirement of the nation’s top horse, Vancouver K, ridden by Judy Reynolds, and the withdrawal from selection by Kate Dwyer, who is expecting a baby, has sparked questions as to who will be getting the call.

Alex Baker, who is in need of one further MER, is on the start list for Le Mans aboard Dutchman but it was unclear whether she would be able to compete.

GOVERNMENT restart grants to help businesses reopen safely as restrictions ease have caused some confusion as official guidance states “indoor riding schools” are eligible, when outdoor ones may also be.

The Government announced that the scheme would support “businesses in the non-essential retail, hospitality, leisure, personal care and accommodation sectors” with a one-off grant, of up to £18,000 for the latter four sectors.

It stated that a business may be eligible if it is based in England, rate-paying, in the above sectors and trading on 1 April.The accompanying guidance includes “indoor riding schools” among the eligible businesses, leading to some schools being turned down for grants as they only had outdoor arenas.

But a Government spokesman confirmed to H&H that this list of businesses is not exhaustive, and both indoor and outdoor riding schools are eligible.

Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) trustee George Baber told H&H: “We’re extremely pleased. Most riding schools are currently in debt, and this will be an opportunity to give them at least a start as they enter, hopefully, a new era.

“And of course we really don’t know what the future holds; it still looks like a bumpy road.”

Mr Baber said he foresees some issues, as the Government said councils will be responsible for determining whether businesses are entitled to a grant.

“The issue is that local authorities are saying ‘it says indoors and not outdoors’,” he said, adding that he will spread the word to ABRS members on the Government confirmation.

Laureen Evans, who runs Manston Riding Centre in Kent, applied for the grant but was refused as she has no indoor arenas.

“Ski slopes and farms where you go and visit the animals have had it, and I know someone who’s got two outdoor arenas but also an indoor for beginners, and the cheque arrived by return of post,” she told H&H.

“It’s their good fortune and I wish them well but because I’ve got two outdoors, we haven’t had it.”

She was delighted to hear the Government clarification, adding: “We’ve been closed all year until April, and it’s been a struggle as we’ve had all the ongoing bills; animals to feed and staff to pay as the horses still need caring for, insurance. I’m really pleased.”

A Government spokesman confirmed both outdoor and indoor schools are eligible, as long as they meet the “leisure” definition in the guidance.

“Leisure businesses, including indoor and outdoor riding schools, have been able to claim grant support throughout the pandemic, including one-off restart grants of up to £18,000 to support them as Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

“We have issued clear guidance to local authorities on business categorisation and grant eligibility, and continue to monitor them to ensure businesses are receiving the support they need.”

H&H finds out what the most recent easing of lockdown restrictions means for riders in all the home nations, including the implications for competing and spectating

SUPPORTERS are returning to equestrian sport and restrictions on the use of indoor schools have eased as the horse world takes further cautious steps back to normality in England.

The latest step in the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown is a boost for those riding school and competition venues hit by frustrating restrictions on use of indoor arenas, which have now lifted.

“Throughout the pandemic, our aim has been to provide as much tangible support as possible to everyone in the equestrian community,” British Horse Society chief executive James Hick told H&H.

“Our BHS hardship fund and coronavirus donations appeal collectively raised over £1m for the ongoing care of BHS riding school horses and ponies – a lifeline to many of our riding schools, enabling them to survive and be around for future generations of equestrians.

“With this next phase out of lockdown, we look forward to a brighter future with the gradual reopening of riding schools, coaching, and the return of live events.

“This is vitally important for riding schools, as businesses, to be able to open their doors once again, enabling riding to be accessible for current and new riders, as well as for the welfare of their horses and ponies.”

The new rules mean organised sport can take place both outdoors and indoors “with no limit on numbers”, subject to sport-specific guidance.

Spectators at shows are down to organisers’ discretion, in line with their member body’s rules. A ticketing procedure and full Covid protocols should be in place, and social distancing and gathering limits also apply.

Racecourses and point-to-points also welcomed back fans from Monday, again with limits on numbers and strict safety protocols.

Restrictions have eased slightly on rider support team numbers, while the restrictions on indoor hospitality and overnight stays have lifted. As with all these new rules, the eased restrictions all apply under additional Covid protocols.

British Equestrian chief executive Jim Eyre said things are “certainly moving in a positive direction”, bringing us “ever closer to normality”.

“I must stress that we all continue to exercise caution, not be complacent and act responsibly in line with the protocols in place from Government, member bodies and venues – we’re not out of the woods just yet,” he said, adding that provided the horseworld continues to work together, “we can look forward to a great British equestrian summer”.

British Dressage (BD) chief executive Jason Brautigam said Monday was “another landmark day to getting our sport back on the road to recovery”.

He added that the latest announcements allow all facilities to “fully reopen, within the permitted numbers”.

“I’m delighted to say we’ve welcomed 1,200 members to [BD] since we restarted at the end of March, with many new members as well as those rejoining us – and it looks like we’re on course for record starter numbers in April and May,” he said. “However, it is vitally important that all participants continue to follow the protocols to ensure our activity can continue safely.”

Racecourse Association chief executive David Armstrong said this step is a “hugely important milestone in the recovery of British racing”.

He added that racecourses are “very excited” to welcome racegoers back and extend what they are able to offer owners.

“Lockdown began almost 14 months ago and it has been a very challenging journey for the industry and for racecourses in particular though several false starts and aborted pilot events,” he said. “[This] marks a key step on the return to normality.”

Home nations

COVID rules vary across the UK’s devolved governments, but this week has brought easing of restrictions in every nation to some degree.

Outdoor sport is now permitted in Northern Ireland, with further changes planned for 24 May, subject to a review today (Thursday, 20 May).

Mainland Scotland, with the exception of Moray and Glasgow, has moved to level two restrictions. This means more competitors are allowed at events.

Wales’ restrictions have been lifted to the extent of allowing overnight stays in holiday accomodation, including horseboxes at shows and training, and organised group activities in Wales are permitted for up to 30 people indoors or 50 outdoors. This means some shows are on, while some larger ones are unable to go ahead. These restrictions are set to be reviewed in three weeks’ time.

H&H speaks to the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials director about the reasons behind this year’s cancellation, and gets the rider view, as well as investigating what the loss of Dublin Horse Show 2021 means for the Nations Cup series

BRITAIN has lost both CCI5* events for a second year as Covid uncertainty and no available pandemic insurance forced the 2021 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials to cancel.

Organisers of the event (2–5 September) said on 8 May there “have been and remain too many variables and uncertainties owing to the pandemic to deliver this much-loved international event”.

Burghley director Elizabeth Inman told H&H the costs and set-up of the event made the financial risk unviable.

“All events start from a different perspective about their basic infrastructure, whether they have permanent facilities or, as we are, a greenfield site, and that alters cost significantly,” she said, adding costs would be “well in excess of £1m” to set up to run, even behind closed doors.

“Under FEI rules, there are minimum prize money requirements, TV costs are significant, as are costs before you even start on a greenfield site – there are a lot of extras when it comes to running a five-star that would be different to many other events.

Added to which, Burghley Horse Trials is owned by the Burghley Estate, which comes under the overarching body of the Burghley House Preservation Trust that has charitable status.”

She said this status means it is unable to underwrite or subsidise the significant financial and reputational risk that would come with a sudden and late cancellation. Other events in Burghley Park this year are significantly smaller than the horse trials and independently run, so shoulder their liability.

“We did explore crowdfunding, and spoke to many riders, among other bodies, and received masses of support. It’s sadly not just about that and the estate has other considerations, such as the local area, how it affects people who live locally, the perception of running behind closed doors; it’s a bigger picture and we must acknowledge we are here by invitation of the landowners, Burghley House Preservation Trust, who are our hosts,” she said.

She added that while many national events can have hundreds of competitors to bring in funds from entries, Burghley is limited to 80 and as the weeks go by, the pre-event costs increase. A late cancellation would risk more than just this year’s event; it could “jeopardise” the fixture’s future.

“The support we’ve had from riders and bodies has been phenomenal and we understand the huge disappointment; as well as riders there are owners, sponsors, horses getting older, and we share that,” she said.

Tim Price, who won Burghley in 2018 on Ringwood Sky Boy, told H&H he had intended to retire the horse there last year.

“He came into work super this year, aged 18, and I was really excited about trying to repeat the dream,” he said. “It’s really difficult for owners too as they’re starting to question what they’re investing in.

“It seems surprising, when so many things are going on, that there wasn’t an alternative. Most of the country will be vaccinated by then, there seem lots of reasons it would be doable; stadiums and malls are filling up, but we can’t hold an outdoor event.”

Tim said not knowing the full reasoning makes it harder to understand the decision.

“[Jonelle and I] would pay thousands; no one’s asked us to but we’d pay £4,000 to enter instead of the £600 or so if that’s what it took,” he said. “Last year, they seemed more open to running behind closed doors, which in my opinion could work really well, as the whole world is desperate for the sport.

“Maybe they have tried different things and failed, we’re not privy to it, but it’s very disappointing.”

Nations Cup question mark

IT has been a mixed week for equestrian sport. While Royal Windsor and Horse of the Year Show announcements are cause for optimism, uncertainty and cancellations elsewhere have tempered celebrations.

Dublin Horse Show organisers the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) pulled the plug on 6 May, but will instead host some showing and showjumping classes at a RDS National Championships (18–22 August).

“Preparations for a typical Dublin Horse Show take many months of planning and organisation, and this has not been possible this year with the levels of uncertainty that still exist for the re-opening of Irish society,” said an RDS statement.

The blow also has knock-on consequences for the FEI’s prestigious Nations Cup series and the FEI is considering what action to take. Hickstead announced in April that an amended Royal International Horse Show would go ahead (20–25 July), without the Nations Cup leg or the King George V Gold Cup.

Dublin’s cancellation means the European division one calendar has now lost back-to-back Nations Cup fixtures.

Each nation is allocated four fixtures where they can collect points and Britain, Ireland and Italy were all set to collect points at both Hickstead and Dublin. Should a leg be cancelled, there is provision in the rulebook for points to be allocated to a nation based on their other performances in the series, but the cancellation of two legs has led to a rethink.

An FEI spokesman told H&H on 8 May that the jumping committee is “closely monitoring the situation” for the Nations Cup series.

“[The committee] has proactively considered potential additional Covid-19 by-laws for the 2021 season in light of the continued impact of Covid-19,” she said.

Dressage riders and Brooke ambassadors Charlotte Dujardin and Alice Oppenheimer are supporting the charity’s emergency appeal to help “desperate animals in need” amid the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The charity has launched an appeal to raise £100,000 to support communities and the working horses, donkeys and mules affected by the pandemic.

“The country hit a record 414,188 new infections on 7 May and some states have imposed lockdown restrictions. As the pandemic rages on, loyal working animals are carrying essential supplies of food and water to keep their communities going and it’s vital they are kept healthy if their owners are to recover from the economic and health impacts of this crisis,” said a Brooke spokesman.

Charlotte Dujardin said like others, she has found it “deeply upsetting” watching the crisis in India.

“My heart goes out to all who are affected,” she said. “When I visited with Brooke in 2015 I was struck by the warm welcome and kindness I received from communities and I’m especially thinking of those people and their animals at this devastating time.

“Now more than ever, it’s important we keep animals healthy so that they can continue to support their communities.”

Alice Oppenheimer, who also visited India with the charity in 2015, said she was “heartbroken” to see the “devastating impact” of Covid-19.

“During my time in the country I saw first-hand the vital contribution that working animals make to livelihoods, so I’m pleased to be supporting Brooke’s emergency appeal ensuring they continue to receive support. If we’ve learnt one thing during this pandemic, it’s that we’re all in this together and it’s important we remember this as we think of those in India.”

The Indian government has classified veterinary care as essential and Brooke staff have been given special passes allowing them to reach animals and communities that are isolated and in desperate need.

“As with the first wave in 2020, staff are prioritising the use of telemedicine and, where possible, providing guidance to local health practitioners on the phone and via Whatsapp. If in-person assistance is needed, staff are taking all necessary precautions to keep themselves and communities safe, including social distancing, double-masking, and sanitising,” said the spokesman.

“Funds from the appeal will ensure that Brooke can continue to help animals in need for several months. Even when the surge in infections subsides, these remote communities will need their animals to be healthy in order to rebuild life after Covid-19.”

The 2021 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials will not run, organisers have confirmed with “immense sadness”, owing to continued uncertainty over coronavirus.

The event was due to run from 2-5 September and would have been Britain’s only CCI5* of 2021 following the cancellation of Badminton. But today (7 May), organisers said: “Despite the continued easing of lockdown measures, the nationwide vaccination programme and the hope within the Government roadmap for unlocking the country, there have been and remain too many variables and uncertainties due to the Covid-19 pandemic to deliver this much-loved international event.”

A Burghley statement said the team has “striven” for the last six months to find a scenario that would allow the event to run.

“However, the event runs on a greenfield site; the lead time and strategic infrastructure planning all require significant investment and expenditure year on year,” the statement said.

“Staging the competition element is ongoing 365 days a year, from one year’s event to the next and the contractual cancellation procedures mean that even though restrictions are easing across the country, we have to make difficult decisions many months ahead of the event. The severe financial implications of a potential cancellation of an event of this scale and magnitude at a late stage, without available pandemic insurance, are too great a risk for all involved.

“We are desperately sad for the sport of eventing; our riders, owners and their sponsors who have been so affected by the large-scale cancellation of events over the last 12 months. Whilst this year we will not see CCI 5*L competition at Land Rover Burghley, we remain steadfast in our commitment that the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials will endure. We are particularly grateful to Land Rover, our title sponsor, who together with our other sponsors, have been so understanding and supportive throughout this period.”

Burghley Horse Trials president Miranda Rock said the team came to the very difficult decision with “a very heavy heart”.

“The horse trials is an incredibly important part of what we do here at Burghley and is the highlight of the year for all those who live and work here,” she said.

The 2021 Dublin Horse Show has been cancelled owing to uncertainty around the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is the second consecutive year the show has been lost, owing to coronavirus.

Organisers Royal Dublin Society (RDS) announced today (6 May) that the Dublin Horse Show would not be going ahead; instead, the society is planning to hold a RDS National Championships for selected national showing and showjumping competitions from 18-22 August.

“The RDS has been monitoring the evolving situation regarding Covid-19, including the vaccination rates and the latest Government advice,” said the statement.

“In the current circumstances it has been decided that it will not be possible to operate a Dublin Horse Show this year.

“Preparations for a typical Dublin Horse Show take many months of planning and organisation, and this has not been possible this year with the levels of uncertainty that still exist for the re-opening of Irish society.”

The decision is also a further blow to the FEI Nations Cup calendar. The Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead, which was the leg before Dublin in the series calendar, has pulled a number of major classes this year including the Nations Cup.

This leaves questions over what this means for the nations who would have collected points at these fixtures, but FEI rules state: “In the case of a qualifying competition being cancelled in any region or division where teams are allocated events counting for points the following procedure applies. Teams whose result would have counted for points at the cancelled competition are distributed points for the cancelled competition, based on the total number of points obtained at their other allocated events divided by the number of Events at which they have participated for points. This calculation is carried out at the end of the season.”

The RDS statement added that the society plans for the replacement national event in August to be behind closed doors, restricted to equestrian competitors for the day of their competition only.

“The RDS is mindful of acting responsibly during these times and the event will only proceed on foot of Government approval, which is currently being sought,” it adds

“Our desire to host the RDS National Championships, despite the exceptionally challenging circumstances, is motivated by our commitment to support the sport horse industry during this very difficult time.

“We would like to acknowledge and thank the ongoing support of our sponsors, who are crucial to the viability of the Dublin Horse Show, as well as the understanding of the equestrian community for whom the Show is a yearly highlight.

“We look forward to hosting the Dublin Horse Show in 2022 and welcoming tens of thousands of visitors back each day to a summer staple that people have known and loved for generations.”

Organised competition and training is now able to widely resume in Scotland and Wales as the nations move a step closer towards normality.

A number of Covid-19 restrictions, including rules on travel and outdoor sport, were eased on Monday (26 April) in both nations, paving the way for more organised competition and training to resume.

British Dressage (BD) will resume in Wales this week, for the first time since December 2020, and Scotland’s legal requirement to stay within your local authority area to compete and train has also been lifted. This opens up the training and competition network fully for members.

Restrictions on sporting activity for under-18s have been relaxed in Scotland for some time, while Wales’ rules have permitted travel into England prior to this latest easing of restrictions. Senior British Showjumping (BS) shows now have resumed in Scotland.

BD chief executive Jason Brautigam said it “really feels” like we’re getting closer to resuming a normal calendar of events for all BD members.

“It’s been a long time coming, but it’s now looking promising that by mid-May we should have the full use of indoor and outdoor facilities – and hopefully even spectators will be able to return,” he added.

“We appreciate that members living in Scotland, Wales and on the islands have had limited or no competition so far this year and the [BD] board had no hesitation in supporting our proposal to offer a further month’s horse extension to those affected, in recognition for their continued loyalty and patience. This takes the value of the horse registration concessions offered to date to almost £400,000.

“The team are getting the arrangements in place and you should see the extension against your horse’s record in the next two weeks.”

The Welsh Sport Association has also said that indoor activity should be able to get back underway from 3 May onwards, brought forward by two weeks from 17 May. This would enable indoor competitions and training for groups of up to 15 people to resume in Wales, and only individuals within the field of play would count towards the total number.

But while there is cause for celebration, the restrictions mean some other equestrian events are unable to go ahead.

Both the Scottish and Welsh point-to-point seasons have been thwarted by restrictions and pandemic uncertainty. The last point-to-point fixture in Wales was the Carmarthenshire in 2019, and the nation was due to have two fixtures at Bonvilston (8 & 22 May), where Covid restrictions and dry weather with no forecast rain resulted in cancellation. The Pembrokeshire was also due to take place at Trecoed (5 June), which was ready to run and had provision in place to water, but was forced to cancel owing to Government restrictions.

An update from the Point-to-Point Authority added Scottish fixtures “finally had to give up trying to stage a meeting as the risk had become huge with no confidence that the obstacles could be overcome”. The Zetland with Cleveland at Witton Castle in Co. Durham has come forward a week to 2 May, to help bridge the gap for those in the north.

British Eventing’s (BE) Howick (18-19 May) and Chepstow at Howick (3-4 July) fixtures have both been cancelled owing to Covid restrictions and ongoing uncertainty respectively.

“As Howick is in Wales, the event is subject to different Covid regulations to English events,” said a statement from the organisers issued by BE.

“We have today received confirmation from the relevant authorities that our May event will not be able to run under the current and emerging regulations in Wales and with a heavy heart we have made the decision to cancel this event.

“It is clear that the Welsh Government is being more cautious and planning test events before allowing large events and due to this ongoing uncertainty we have taken the decision to also cancel Chepstow at Howick.”

The organisers added the decision was “not taken lightly” and apologised for any disappointment.

“The timing of this decision will enable our fabulous volunteers to plan alternative arrangements, our suppliers the chance of seeking alternative English venues and other events in England to offer additional/alternative provision for competitors,” it added.

“We appreciate your understanding in balancing a myriad number of considerations to reach the most appropriate decision for all stakeholders.

“We very much hope that 2022 will see the return of our events and we can look forward to welcoming you back to Wales and our horse trials.”

Llanymynech (15-16 May), on the Shropshire side of the Welsh border, is going ahead.

Campaigners have contacted the Government asking for changes to the current law on indoor schools. H&H finds out why this is thought to be so important, and what action is being taken

CAMPAIGNERS for riding schools are warning the Government to amend the law in relation to indoor schools, or risk mass closures should restrictions tighten again.

Pammy Hutton, of the Talland School of Equitation, Gloucestershire, and Tim Downes of Ingestre Stables, Staffordshire, have written to MPs to “highlight the extreme plight of riding schools in England, which are currently being victimised by legislation that is not in line with other industries and commercial ventures”.

H&H has reported on the perceieved inconsistency of government coronavirus legislation, under which initially last year, indoor arena use was banned in line with that of other indoor sports facilities.

The Government then agreed that owing to their agricultural and airy nature, indoor arenas counted as outdoors for the purposes of the law, but in the legislation announced days before the 29 March sport restart date, this had changed. It is hoped indoor arenas will be allowed to fully open on 17 May, but Pammy and Tim, who have been campaigning for full use to be allowed on behalf of riding schools, are concerned about possible future restrictions.

“If legislation does not alter and the allocation of funding is not re-evaluated, if further restrictions become necessary, there will be no facilities left in England for the general public to participate in recreational riding,” the letter states.

Pammy told H&H that although she is hopeful of a 17 May reopening, she is taking nothing for granted, especially given the new India Covid-19 variation.

“I won’t rest until the law is changed,” she said.

“Let’s say 17 May comes and everything goes back to normal, but what if what happened last year happens again?” she asked. “We’re still in the place we were last year and I’m not waiting till September to find that law’s still there.”

Pammy is hopeful the letter will get to high places as Tim Warren, a former council leader who now runs Shelford Warren, helping clients “navigate national and local government”, has flagged it to MP Jacob Rees-Mogg and chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Mr Warren, who was alerted to the issue by his friend and Badminton course-builder Eric Winter’s wife Lizzel, told H&H he has had dealings with Mr Sunak, and Mr Rees-Mogg is his MP.

“He’s always been very helpful and diligent, and will always do what he can for constituents,” said Mr Warren, who also runs an equestrian business importing and selling young horses. “MPs get thousands of emails every day but I can ring Jacob and have a chat, and hopefully he’ll pass it on to [sports minister] Oliver Dowden.

“It seems ridiculous that you can go into shops but not indoor arenas, and if I can help, I will.”

Defra and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport refused to comment.

More than 9,000 riders have so far signed up to take part in an epic fundraising relay ride across the UK.

The Great Horses for Health relay starts on 2 May in Yorkshire and will take place in 11 regions of the UK over five months. Participants have two weeks to choose their own routes in their local areas, which will be recorded on a map, and the relay “baton” will be passed to the next region at a pre-arranged Covid-safe event.

Rider Sophie Gifford came up with the idea during lockdown, and the event will raise funds via sponsorship for charities HorseWorld, Redwings, Hope Pastures, HorseBack UK, Bransby Horses, North Wales Horse Watch and the Riding for the Disabled Association.

Sophie, who is supported by a group of volunteers and a team from HorseWorld, set up the relay to celebrate how much horses have done for people during the pandemic.

“My Irish cob Jack helped me cope with the mental challenges of the pandemic and I was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore to start a community event which would highlight the positive effects an equine can have on your wellbeing whilst also raising money for horse welfare,” she said.

An award-winning broadcast will return this Easter to bring a “donkey fix” to those whose activities are still restricted by lockdown rules.

While many attractions remain closed to the public this bank holiday weekend, the Donkey Sanctuary will be providing people with a “virtual day out” in the comfort of their own living rooms.

From 10am on Easter Sunday (4 April), people will be able to catch up with the charity’s four-legged residents during the broadcast of its Sanctuary From Your Sofa event.

The special production, which also coincides with International Carrot Day, is a follow-up to a series of successful events last year, which won the Donkey Sanctuary the award for the best audience engagement campaign at the 2020 UK Social Media Awards.

The event will feature live broadcasts from grooms at the Donkey Sanctuary headquarters in Sidmouth, as well as a host of pre-recorded videos from its regional sanctuaries around the UK.

Maxine Carter, farm manager at The Donkey Sanctuary Sidmouth, said: “Last year’s events reached more than one million people across the world, so we’re really excited to bring the virtual event back for all those people who are missing their ‘donkey fix’.

“Easter Sunday’s event will feature all of the charity’s 22 adoption donkeys from across the UK, and as the day falls on International Carrot Day our fluffy friends can expect a few crunchy treats and surprises throughout the day in the form of enrichment activities.”

“We will not let this rest” is the position of the equestrian industry as the Government has refused to allow indoor arenas to re-open.

Indoor arenas will stay mainly closed under the latest Covid restrictions, despite a joint campaign by the equestrian governing bodies.

After nearly a week of discussions, it has been confirmed by Defra to British Equestrian (BEF) that apart from some exemptions, indoor schools may not be used.

The BEF, British Horse Society, Pony Club and the Olympic discipline governing bodies led a campaign for clarification on the most recent legislation.

“Our previous agreement with Government that equestrian indoor venues would be classified as outdoors due to their agricultural and airy nature no long applies,” a BEF spokesman said.

“This is because the classification of what makes a venue ‘indoors’ has been now been determined using section two of the Health Act 2006, which relates to smoke-free regulations.”

A Defra “roadmap” states that an indoor structure is one considered to be “substantially enclosed” for the purpose of smoke-free regulations.

A structure is likely to be classed as outdoors if more than half the area of its walls is open. For details, see the smoke-free legislation.

Indoor arenas may be used by elite sportspeople, mainly those on the World Class programme at P1 and P2 levels, owners of horses kept at riding centres and employees of such centres, to care for, exercise and provide veterinary services. They can also be used for organised sport and leisure by disabled people and children, which would include junior shows, and for activities that form part of the core curriculum of formal education or professional/work-related training/development.

Otherwise, they must be closed until step two, no earlier than 12 April, when they may be used by a single household or bubble, or for individual sport, if the warm-up is outdoors. In step three, no earlier than 17 May, the intention is that indoor arenas may be used under the looser social contact rules in place at the time; allowing groups of up to six people or two households.

“This is Defra’s current confirmed position and we ask the equestrian sector to operate in line with the above at this time,” the spokesman said.

“Collectively, we will continue to make the strong case for the use of equestrian indoor riding arenas with Government in a bid to get agreement on their use at an earlier stage. We have support from a number of MPs and Whitehall staff, plus Sport England, who have worked strongly on our behalf. We thank our member bodies for their support and input this week and, with the support of the British Horse Council, we will not let this situation rest.”

BEF interim CEO Iain Graham said the sector’s collaborative working and united case had meant a strong argument put forward to the Government.

“However, the position remains that indoor arenas are to stay closed on the whole,” he said.

“We all share the disappointment and frustration that we know a number of venues, proprietors and the equine community will be feeling. However, we will continue the campaign on everyone’s behalf, with the support of Sport England, in a bid to get indoor riding facilities fully open within the Government’s stage 2 timeframe which we hope will be 12 April.”

Mark Phillips reviews the current global travel and competition challenges facing riders and their support teams

COVID-19 has changed life so much – it’s a struggle even to begin to understand what the new normal will be. Add Brexit on top of that and we almost have the perfect storm, certainly for those of us who have to travel to make a living. The paperwork involved in moving from one country to another, particularly with animals, is off the scale of ridiculousness.

Having to take your truck to mainland Europe or Ireland to get it certified – and the cost involved – is just the start. The 32 pages of vet papers to go abroad and the time that it takes to get them processed at the border is unbelievable, and if you want to take your dog as well, that’s another whole raft of time, money and bureaucracy gone mad.

The politicians are lucky that a lot of the Brexit hassles have been overshadowed and kept out of the news by Covid.

We hope things will improve, but in the meantime European events that rely on a substantial entry from the UK are going to find things tough because most British-based riders will support home events. Will those events have the capacity for the increased demand?

Badminton, Chatsworth, Rockingham and Bramham all cancelling was sad, but totally understandable. Events that traditionally had larger crowds, tradestands and sponsors have struggled to come up with a financially viable model, even with reduced prize money.

Livestreaming can help, but if you put a livestream behind a paywall, the number of hits reduces by 80-90%, reducing the exposure value for sponsors.

One rule for all

ASTON-LE-WALLS will replace Chatsworth in May, a predictable and understandable move because of the amount of infrastructure Nigel Taylor has in place at Aston. Helen West and her team at Bicton Arena have bravely said they will replace Bramham.

As a debut four-star venue, the team at Bicton will embark on a new build but will also borrow fences from some of us further up the M5 and M3.

I will be helping with the course-design at both venues.

It’s just sad that in a typical “one rule for all” move, the FEI has said that as a new four-star venue, Bicton can’t be a qualifier for the Olympics. It’s a rule the FEI brought in to try and stop South American countries putting on easy qualifiers for their athletes and horses, but I feel some flexibility and discretion could be applied in the current circumstances.

At least eventing is up and running again in the UK, if only at venues where the financial model is based on entry fees.

It would not surprise me to see more big event cancellations later in the summer because of the lead time and budgeting needed and the ongoing uncertainties of the Covid goal posts. To me, almost the worst scenario is being allowed to run with 5,000 or 10,000 spectators – then do you have tradestands, and if so how

many and what can they be charged or what can they afford to pay? And how many will still be in business?

A waiver to travel

I’VE been one of the lucky ones with a high-performance waiver allowing me to travel back and forth to the US during this period.

UK-based athletes qualify for a waiver to travel to the Kentucky five-star, based on the fact that their participation will enhance the Tokyo preparation for the US athletes. I know the US Equestrian Federation is working on trying to include owners on that waiver.

FEI competition is due to start opening up on mainland Europe after the 11 April, with new protocols because of the equine herpes virus. That will be good news for Europeans as they will be able to start their Tokyo preparations in earnest.

In the meantime we will all hold our breath hoping that no bad news comes out of Japan so that the Tokyo Games can go ahead, even if with only Japanese spectators.

RIDERS are delighting as the easing of England’s lockdown restrictions spell the restart of organised equestrian sport, but frustration remains over the Government’s late change to rules on indoor arenas.

Competition and training, as well as lessons at riding schools, were allowed to resume across England today (29 March), following months of lockdown and restrictions. But the legislation governing current rules, under which indoor arenas are in the main not allowed to be used, was only released on Friday (26 March).

There was confusion last year as indoor arenas were initially not allowed to open despite the fact they are far more ventilated and larger than shops and other permitted businesses.

Defra and the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) finally agreed such facilities could be used from 4 July. At the time, British Equestrian (BEF) CEO Iain Graham said the BEF and others had “gone to great lengths to explain the nature of equestrian indoor schools and today we finally made the breakthrough”.

Guidance that then applied for the rest of the year stated that indoor schools counted as outdoor for the purposes of the rules, and so could be used.

A BEF spokesman said on 26 March: “This wording was introduced into the legislation, and equestrian activity and sport was able to resume under strict Covid protocols to ensure the safety of all participants without issue. The wording has been removed from the legislation published today.

“British Equestrian has raised this as a matter of urgency with Sport England, DCMS and Defra for clarification because this change in situation is not justified or reasonable, particularly at such short notice. We know there will be a degree of frustration throughout the industry at this development, but we will continue to represent collective interests of the equine sector in England for a solution.”

Association of British Riding Schools chairman George Baber told H&H the situation is not as dire for riding schools as it might first appear.

He said that of course all schools with outdoor arenas can carry on; the “rule of six” does not apply to lessons, nor to the number of helpers, leaders or coaches, so these schools will be able to run as normal. The rule of six does come into play once riders have dismounted, so schools will have to be mindful of this guidance at that point.

He added: “The legislation does allow under-18s to have supervised indoor sports. There’s a discrepancy between that and the Sport England guidance but the letter of the law is that under-18s can do indoor sports, so I can see no reason riding schools can’t give children indoor lessons, if Covid restrictions are in place, and that’s been my advice to them.”

Mr Baber said although this means schools with only indoor arenas may not teach adults until 12 April, he hopes that being able to teach children will mean businesses are not too badly affected.

“It’s not ideal but I think if schools operate sensibly, they can get back about 80% of their normal operation,” he said, adding that the fact the legislation was only released three days before the restart was an issue.

“I can understand businesses were trying to plan ahead, and how can you plan when it’s Friday and you’re opening on Monday?” he said. “The frustration and anger is understandable.”

Mr Baber added that the legislation specifically allows people to ride their own horses in indoor schools, which covers arena hire, and warned that parents may not watch their children’s lessons from the indoor arenas.

Neither Defra nor the DCMS was available for comment.

Elite riders have been able to continue their training and compete at specific events under strict “elite athlete” conditions and Covid-safe protocols, but for many – and venues not affected by the Government-caused “indoor” arena confusion – Monday marked the first resumption of organised sport for all levels.

Little Downham was holding a British Eventing “train for eventing” fixture, and organiser Tina Ure told H&H it was “really enjoyable” to welcome people back.

“We’ve been bowled over by the level of thanks and positivity of the riders,” she said. “We’ve kept everything relaxed and so far it’s been extremely well received and enjoyable all round.”

Rider Caroline Powell added she “cannot commend the train for eventing format enough”.

There is no dressage, so competitors go straight from showjumping to cross-country course.

“What a great thing [these events] are for fresh horses coming out on to the grass for the first time,” she said. “There’s loads of space, loads of time, nobody hassling you – it’s the best thing, and Tina’s done a really good course.”

Owners and amateur riders have been welcomed back on racecourses, while point-to-pointing has also restarted. There were considerable entries across the three fixtures on Monday, at Charing, Revesby and Hurworth, followed by a full card scheduled for the Maisemore on Tuesday.

The Showing Council has updated its blueprint for the resumption of competition. H&H finds out about the changes, and speaks to the council and organisers about what they will mean, for shows and competitors

THE Showing Council has released an updated showing blueprint in response to the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

The evolving document was first sent out in July 2020 as a guide for the resumption of showing in England. The most recent changes include the recommendation to “stay local”. Competitors are not allowed to ride for more than one stable at one show and judges will not ride, although this is under review.

“It’s had an interesting evolution,” Showing Council chair David Ingle told H&H. “We initially released it as the showing community had so many questions regarding the recommencement of shows after the first lockdown. Since then, it’s become apparent that something was really needed. Every time there was a change to official guidance, the blueprint was revised.”

“This year we’ve felt a greater sense of responsibility; the blueprint now goes out to more than 200 organisers, from six countries.”

Some organisers had questions over the phrase “stay local”.

“The roadmap has now changed from ‘stay home’ to ‘stay local’, ”Mr Ingle said.

“With this in mind we advise competitors also to stay local; this means not driving past one show to get to another, and not travelling the length of the country to attend an event.

“The advice against people riding animals from different stables is to do with social distancing; if someone is jumping on different horses they’re mixing with multiple bubbles. It’s the same with ride judging, though I’m keen to see this return as soon as possible.

“We are constantly in talks with British Equestrian. Our job is to help mitigate any risk so we can get moving again and have fun while complying with the guidelines. Show organisers should register so they can receive the updated blueprint from us.”

British Show Pony Society (BSPS) area 14 show secretary Lesley Chubb is gearing up to host the area’s first 2021 show this month.

“Show organises have more responsibility than ever,” she told H&H. “The workload before the show has increased tremendously. We now require all vehicle registrations and names of those attending with each animal.

“Our show lived on entries on the day, and this is now a thing of the past. We also have to close entries a day earlier due to the amount of information to be processed, and must provide ‘not before’ times for each class at least 24 hours before the show. We may have to look into paid security, too, which will increase costs. We have been provided a great template from the BSPS, but the week before the show will be manic.”

Ms Chubb said the blueprint will change competitors’ showing experiences but she urged them to take responsibility for their actions and comply with requirements.

“It will be impossible for us to police the stay local rule, as we don’t know each individual’s circumstances, but for now it’s about using common sense,” she said. “Competitors should keep up to date with shows’ communication on their website and Facebook pages, too.”

Carl Hester shares his thoughts on the difficulties of competing abroad and team selection ahead of this year’s championships, as well as remembering a very special neighbour...

THE devastating news of a virus threatening our horses could not have come at a worse time, as we are all looking forward to a gradual release from Covid lockdown.

With all FEI shows, including the World Cup Final, cancelled until 11 April, the key thing we should all bear in mind with the equine herpes virus (EHV-1) is that, while member bodies can control competition riders, they cannot control travel for sales, training, stud work and so on, apart from urging everyone to follow the protocols.

We all have a part to play in safeguarding the UK’s equine population, so please, if you must travel horses across our borders, ensure you employ the highest levels of biosecurity and good practice. We are lucky to have some of the leading vets in the world on the subject who are happy to lend support, but it boils down to everyone taking responsibility, as with Covid-19.

National hope

IT is great to see that British Dressage (BD) has managed to reschedule 60% of fixtures affected by lockdown. While we wait on confirmation of the date for the winter championships, as many opportunities as possible are on offer from grassroots to preparation for the Tokyo Games – if the Olympics run – and the Europeans.

Frankly, competing abroad seems unlikely for Charlotte Dujardin and I, so we are hoping national preparations will do the job this year.

Several top combinations, like Charlotte and Gio and myself with En Vogue, are not yet qualified for the Olympics and at present the FEI has not adjusted the qualification rules. This will have to be addressed as many international riders face the same challenge of being physically unable to get out and qualify. The first plan for Charlotte and me was to ride at Hagen in April, but with EHV-1 and the rising Covid cases in Germany, the prospect is daunting.

It is great news that Wellington Riding has the go-ahead from the FEI to run a CDI3*, in place of the cancelled Keysoe CDI, in early May; a brilliant development at a great venue. It is disappointing, however, to learn that this show may not count towards the points needed for Olympic qualification.

Team selection used to be via a selection trial where the best four would be picked. It might be time to return to this. Whatever we do, it would be advisable for us all to have a few dry runs before venturing out. A few important checks might include: do your competition boots zip up, do your tailcoat buttons do up and does the lorry start? Then remember to put both horse and tack on the lorry. Yes, both have been forgotten…

I would also like to highlight two opportunities to get involved at the sharp end of BD. There are two board director vacancies: training and para. Nominations are to be in by 4 May for those with the vision, and experience to get involved.

Goodnight to a great horseman

I WAS saddened to hear of Robert Oliver’s death. I first met Robert in 2000 when H&H asked me to go and ride a lovely middleweight champion he produced, Irene Susca’s Jamaica Bay, for an article. Although initially unenthusiastic to ride a show horse, I had an amazing day, a fabulous gallop and lots of laughs with Robert.

At our housewarming here years later, sitting in the garden with friends as midnight approached, what did we hear but a hunting horn, followed by the sound of hooves clattering up the drive and hounds in full cry. We all went to the front of the house and there, accompanied by two grooms, bareback in their pyjamas, was my new neighbour – Robert – sitting on a large cob.

Robert and his crew stayed for a while laughing and chatting before he announced, “Hester, don’t ever have a party again without inviting me,” and blew for home.

One of the greatest storytellers I’ve ever known, Robert was invited to every party thereafter, and will now always be there in spirit. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Claire and his family.

The British Equestrian Trade Association has surveyed riders to find out the effect the past year has had on their riding, owning and spending. H&H finds out more, and what the industry can expect

PARTS of the equestrian industry appear to be emerging from the worst of the coronavirus pandemic in a better position than had been feared, research indicates.

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) looked into how Covid had been affecting the horse world, from riding and horse-owning to spending and competing, in a similar manner to its four-yearly national equestrian survey.

The research found that although the number of people who had ridden in the past year had dropped, from 3m in 2018 to 2.5m, and one in 20 riders stopped riding altogether during the pandemic, 59% of riders said they had been in the saddle as much as, or more than, pre-Covid levels. One in 10 riders has been spending more on equestrian items during the pandemic, and two in 10 a lot less, or they have stopped spending altogether, but there has been a 38% increase in online spend.

BETA executive director Claire Williams told H&H people had been very worried about the impact lockdown would have on trade, but the association had heard anecdotal evidence that things were not as bad as had been feared. This survey would confirm or disprove this, as well as acting as a mid-point between the 2018 and the 2022 major studies.

“It’s not all roses but I think the industry is coming out better than we thought it would, going in,” she said, adding that the turn towards online shopping may be here to stay; 65% of riders said they were likely to continue shopping in this way.

Those who were spending less cited reduced income and uncertainty as their reasons, while those who were spending more said they had more money as they were not competing, or more time and spare cash to review their needs.

Ms Williams said the riding figures were not unexpected; many people were unable to ride during full lockdown, but others had more free time owing to the furlough scheme or working from home.

“When you put the ‘normal’ figures against last year’s, they’re actually not that different,” she said, adding that more people aged 45+ had stopped riding or done so less frequently, possibly as younger people were home from school or university, and older riders may have been more likely to be shielding or concerned about the virus.

“But it’s a positive message,” she said. “After the first lockdown, there was a nice bounce back when the shops reopened, and people like saddle-fitters were reporting hundreds of people on waiting lists. Things are going to get back to normal; we know they are.”

Riders should apply the principles learned in relation to Covid to protect against the spread of equine herpes virus (EHV) during the current European outbreak – but the risk in the UK is only “mildly increased” from normal.

As competition gets under way in Scotland this weekend, and in England from 29 March, British Equestrian (BEF) is working with the Equine Infectious Diseases Action Group (EIDAG) and BEF member bodies to help mitigate the spread of EHV from Europe.

A BEF spokesman said in a further step to minimise any spread of EHV, the EIDAG also recommends the implementation of a new self-certification process for riders to declare that their horses are healthy and have not been in contact with any others showing signs of infectious disease.

“Member bodies who agree to implement self-certification will work with their organisers and venues on a system to make the declaration before the horse arrives at the venue. Competitors should follow the information on each competition schedule on how to submit their information. This process will be in place for 29 March to 12 April but could stay in place should the risk level dictate,” he said.

British Dressage and British Showjumping (BS) have confirmed they will use the self-certification process. BS said the form needs to be with the event organiser 24 hours before arrival and should a horse arrive at the venue without the form having been submitted, their entry will need to be forfeited and the horse should not be allowed on to the venue grounds.

The EIDAG is advising that all BEF member bodies restrict activities to “stay local” until at least 12 April, meaning no overnight stays or stabling. This is in line with current Government advice around Covid in England.

“There are a small number of elite training and competitions which require overnight stays currently scheduled. These gatherings will have enhanced biosecurity and protocols in place which have been prepared by the BEF director of equine sports science and medicine, John McEwen,“ said the BEF spokesman.

The BEF spokesman reminded riders that EHV circulates in the UK “constantly”.

“It commonly causes mild fever and respiratory signs and occasionally it leads to neurological signs, abortion and neonatal illness. There are an increased number of reports of EHV from a number of European countries suggesting that currently, there is a mildly increased risk of EHV infection in the UK over and above the usual ever-present threat,” he said.

“In response to reports of more serious disease centring on elite events in the Iberian Peninsula, showjumpers, eventers and dressage horses returning to the UK from these areas have been identified and traced. Strict quarantine is being imposed on their return with comprehensive protocols in place for biosecurity and testing.”

Celia Marr, EIDAG chairman, said it is essential that if any of the horses that have returned to the UK are infected, we do not allow the virus to escape into the general horse population.

“Fortunately, quarantine is an effective way to control EHV because it requires close horse-to-horse contact to spread,” she said. “We are confident that BEF’s track, isolate, and test protocols are well under way with the disciplines and are doing their job effectively.”

Philip Ivens, a specialist in equine internal medicine and member of EIDAG and its emergency response group said riders should “always bear in mind” that events, training camps and competitions are occasions where infectious disease can spread.

“Making sure you stop your horse from making direct contact with others, using your own equipment and monitoring your horse for fever or other signs of infectious disease when you return home are sensible ways to reduce risk,” he said.

“Riders should not be more concerned about EHV at the moment – it is easy to forget that risk of infectious diseases such as EHV and strangles is always with us and not let our vigilance drop.”

“We’ve all learned the importance of protecting each other during the Covid-19 pandemic – now we need to apply the same principles of creating space and diligent hygiene to protect everyone’s horses,” added Professor Marr.

In an FEI update today (19 March) the organisation said it was following up on a reported EHV-1 positive in a horse that was tested at its home stable in Scotland after returning from Vilamoura, Portugal. The FEI said neither the positive horse or any of its stable companions that had travelled back from Portugal are showing clinical signs and they have been isolated since their return.

Scotland has been given the nod to resume equestrian competition, in welcome news for riders.

Last week, first minister Nicola Sturgeon set out plans to relax the “stay at home” restrictions and today (12 March) Horsescotland released revised guidance for equestrians, in accordance with Sportscotland.

From today adults (aged 18 and over) can take part in organised activity, including training and competitions, but this must take place within their own local authority for those in mainland Scotland. Riders taking part in “informal activity” such as hacking or facility hire without a coach, can travel up to five miles into a neighbouring local authority area.

Training and competitions should take place in outdoor sporting bubbles; for 12 and over a “field of play bubble” can consist of up to 15 people ( including coaches, officials and support staff) at any one time.

“Where there are multiple bubbles operating at the same venue these must be risk-assessed to ensure there can be no mixing of participants before, during or after the activity. Specific mitigations could include staggered start times, limiting car parking or controlling access/ egress points,” the guidance states.

Under-18s can take part in training and competition without travel restrictions. The field of play bubbles can consist of up to 15 people for age 12 and over including coaches and officials at any one time. For under-12s a bubble can consist of up to 30 people.

“Through working closely with Sportscotland, I am delighted to see activity again opening up for the equestrian community in Scotland,” said Horsescotland chairman Grant Turnbull.

“I urge riders to work with us, our member bodies and the wider community to ensure progression is speedy and continuous. I personally believe that further relaxation measures are likely to be accelerated and that we can look forward to much greater freedom in the not too distant future.”

Riders who had qualified for the Science Supplements Cup at Badminton Horse Trials 2021 have been asked whether they would prefer a relocated championship, or direct area festival qualification for next year.

This year’s grassroots championships was cancelled this month along with the CCI5* event. Following the loss of the 2020 cup, along with the main event, to the coronavirus, British Eventing (BE) had announced that those who had qualified would be able to contest the finals this May.

But with the 2021 event also called off, BE contacted members to ask whether they would prefer the BE90 and BE100 championships to run at a different venue in 2021, or direct entry into an area qualifier, which would give them the chance to qualify for Badminton 2022.

“It was with deep regret that we announced last week that sadly both Badminton Horse Trials and the Science Supplements Cup had been cancelled,” a BE spokesman said this week. “There is no doubt that this is extremely disappointing news to those who worked hard to gain their qualifications.

“Due to the 2022 BE90 and BE100 championship qualification cycle having already begun, it will sadly not be possible to continue to roll qualification over for a further year due to fitting into the schedule of the venue. We have therefore sent a survey to those competitors impacted by the cancellation to determine what alternative arrangements would be most favourable under the current circumstances.”

Kate Oppenheimer, who qualified her mare SOS Sealpoint for the 2020 BE90 championship, told H&H she and other riders had thought and hoped their qualification would roll on to 2022.

“We were discussing it and thinking it was the only option,” she said, adding that although she understands BE had not expected the event to be cancelled again, and did not make the decision, she feels there should have been more consultation of members.

“I can’t speak for everyone, but for me, Badminton was the dream, and another venue just wouldn’t be suitable.

“For me, and other riders, there’s no alternative to riding on that hallowed turf. Before my current horse, I had a gap from owning them but I’d finished vet school and decided I had the time and money, and my mum asked: ‘What do you want to do?’ I said ‘I want to go to Badminton. That’s the dream’.”

Kate said she has also already secured qualification for this year’s area festivals, but of course there is no guarantee of securing that ticket to the final.

“It’s so hard to qualify,” she said. “It’s insanely competitive; you have to put your whole soul into it. When I did, champagne was flowing, people were crying; it meant the world.”

Kate ticked “neither” on the questionnaire she was sent, and questioned whether it might be possible for some of this year’s cohort to content the titles next year, while others ride at championships elsewhere in 2021 if they do not mind where these are held.

A BE spokesman told H&H that the organisation entirely understands the disappointment felt by qualified riders

“Unfortunately, it comes down to fitting the cup in with the schedule of the venue so carrying over again to 2022 is sadly not an option, which is why we have offered the current alternatives,” she said.

“We made the decision to consult with those members who have been impacted, as we know how important the opportunity to ride at Badminton is. With the option to roll over qualification not being possible, we have offered the opportunity of an alternative venue or direct entry to an area qualifier for this year, which would provide an opportunity for qualification for 2022.”

The survey will close on 17 March and the results will be analysed before BE feeds back to competitors on the next steps.

The Equi-Trek Bramham Horse Trials (10-13 June) has been cancelled for 2021.

A statement from the event today said: “While the Government’s positive road map to exit lockdown, successful vaccine roll-out programme and falling case numbers provided some optimism that the event could run, the proposed conditions are impossible to comply with on the Bramham site, even assuming that the Government’s roadmap timetable does not slip.”

Event director Nick Pritchard commented: “We’ve explored every avenue possible to keep Bramham 2021 in the calendar. However, the health, safety and welfare of all who are involved in the event, or come to watch it, is our number one priority and we just can’t guarantee that within the Government’s rules.

“Due to the nature and scale of the event, it is impossible to enforce social distancing reasonably. The extent of the site makes it unfeasible to completely control public access. Sadly, a park isn’t the same as a stadium and while there’s plenty of space, we can’t guarantee social distancing in busy areas. We’re a 500-acre park with several footpaths crossing the estate and with spectator numbers limited to 4,000, we can’t be confident on keeping to this.”

Bramham Horse Trials 2021 cancelled: second year running

This is the second year in a row that Bramham has been cancelled as the event also fell victim to Covid-19 in 2020.

Today’s statement added that the team at Bramham would like to thank our loyal sponsors and volunteers, all owners, riders and grooms, trade stands, contractors and spectators for their continued support, and they look forward to welcoming everyone back to Bramham in 2022.

The loss of Bramham follows the recent cancellation of Badminton Horse Trials and will be a blow to British-based event riders of many nationalities targeting the Olympics and their team personnel, as Bramham would have been one of the important events for selection and preparing horses for the Games.

International eventing fixtures at Rockingham and Withington have been cancelled in May owing to continued uncertainty over the Covid-19 situation.

Withington Manor International, Glos, was scheduled for 1-2 May, with classes up to advanced plus a CCI2*-S, including a pony section.

Organisers Bruno and Fiona Brenninkmeijer-McKenzie said it is “deeply disappointing” for their three-man team that prepares the estate for the horse trials, as the fixture marks the transition into another agriculture year.

“We also recognise that our decision will have an effect upon our loyal contractors, competitors, sponsors and volunteers without whom we are not in a position to present Withington in the best possible light year after year,” they said.

“All have been flexible in their offers of help this year for which we are most grateful. Hopefully by making this decision now this will allow sufficient time for some to make alternative arrangements.

“We are looking forward to 2022 where we can once again deliver the competition to our usual standard.”

The Fairfax & Favor Rockingham Castle International Horse Trials in Northamptonshire was due to run 21-23 May, with a CCI2&3*-S alongside national classes.

A statement from organisers said that while the Government roadmap is cause for optimism, that timetable is “still very fragile and subject to change” and that “it is simply not possible to deliver the event safely and in a way the team would want within these parameters”.

Organiser Lizzie Saunders Watson added the team is “deeply disappointed”.

“The horse trials are part of the lifeblood of the Rockingham estate and our whole team has felt the loss of this much-loved event,” she said.

“We would like to extend our warmest thanks to our volunteers, supporters and sponsors, including our title sponsor, Fairfax & Favor, who have been unwavering in their support during these challenging times.

“Horses have played a huge part in our family life, so we can fully appreciate the disappointment felt across the equestrian community at the loss of our event and many others like it over the last year.

“Whether you are a child taking part in Pony Club activities, a rider dedicated to achieving their goals or an enthusiast bringing a picnic to share with friends, it has been so difficult not to be able to enjoy the things that we love most about our wonderful sport.

“It is so important to safeguard the future of these events and we cannot wait to be able to welcome everyone back to the Great Park next year. We are extremely excited to be celebrating 950 years of the castle’s rich and captivating history in 2022 and we look forward to the horse trials being right at the heart of these celebrations.”

Is it just us or has this lockdown been the toughest of them all? The good news, though, is that competitions are back on the horizon again, with British Dressage (BD) and British Showjumping recently publishing their roadmaps for the season. While we’re all buzzing to get back out there with our horses, there’s sure to be a few of these thoughts running through your mind as you start to prepare for the season to get underway…

1. “Will I still fit in my show jacket/breeches/boots?”

The combination of a long winter plus strict lockdown has done nothing for most of our waistlines, and if your competition clothes are feeling a little on the snug side, we can assure you that you’re not alone. Don’t panic, though, it’s never too late to work on your rider fitness – and perhaps ask your friends if they have any suitable clothes you can borrow.

2. “Help – my horse is still in holiday mode”

It’s been tough to know how to structure a horse’s training and fitness regime over the past few months without any solid idea of when competitions might be returning, and plenty of horses have been enjoying some time taking it easy over the winter. That said, if you’re hoping to get back in action once it’s safe to do so, now is the time to formulate a fitness plan for your horse if you haven’t already.

3. “I’ll never remember the dressage test/route to the venue”

However well you think you have something ingrained in your memory, when you stop practising it for several months, you’ll need a refresher. Don’t wait until you’re halfway up the centre line to realise you don’t know which way to turn at C – get those test sheets out now and swot up. And maybe use a sat nav for that first journey in the lorry.

4. “What if all my competitors have had a more productive lockdown than me?”

It’s easy to feel as though everyone else has used lockdown to advance their training in leaps and bounds, while you could barely summon the energy to tack up on dark evenings. But while you might be expecting your opposition to burst into the warm-up looking like Charlotte and Valegro, the truth is everyone has had their own struggles with the current situation and every combination’s training moves at a different pace. Redirect your focus to you and your horse – and maybe ask for trainer recommendations.

5. “I still can’t get a haircut – I’m going to look scruffy”

With the planned restart of BD activity in England set for 29 March – and hairdressers not due to open until 12 April at the earliest, you can expect most people to rock up to the first event back looking a little worse for wear. We recommend doubling – or even tripling – up on hairnets on keep those wild lockdown locks under some sort of control.

6. “Why do I feel so nervous?”

Feeling a little more nervous than usual after a break from competitions is completely normal. Try to mitigate this in advance – opt to ride a test or jump a course that is lower than the level you were competing at in 2020, and book yourself a confidence-boosting lesson in advance. And don’t feel you need to rush to enter the first competitions in the post-lockdown calendar – wait until you feel ready. But also remember how much you might have missed that thrill of anticipation during lockdown, and try to embrace the adrenaline.

7. “I’ve forgotten how to get up early”

Those elusive weekend lie-ins every rider would dream about have certainly lost some of their appeal now they’ve become a little more normal. It might come as a shock to the body clock to drag yourself out of bed pre-6am for your first post-lockdown show, so why not build yourself up to it by setting your alarm a little earlier each week in the run-up.

8. “Get me to the burger van”

There’s nothing quite like a show-day lunch, especially if it’s following a performance you’re proud of, so don’t deny yourself that dirty burger/cheesy chips/chocolate cake – hopefully on-site cafes will be providing takeaway options for you to enjoy back at your lorry, even if you can’t enjoy them while sitting down watching the action straight away.

Horses have become a coping mechanism for many during the pandemic, as Eleanor Jones discovers

When the order was first given, last March, “you must stay at home”, the country came to a shuddering halt.

With schools, offices, shops and workplaces closed, those riders who were still able to visit their livery yards throughout the dark spring days of the first lockdown were deeply grateful to have a passion that legitimately took them out of the house, and to be able to retain some semblance of normal life.

The lockdowns have highlighted the role horses can and do play in benefiting the lives of all those fortunate to have contact with them. Awareness has been growing over the past few years of the wide and lasting benefits of equine-assisted therapy and learning, and the current situation may be when people need it the most.

Andrew Stennett, of I-Pegasus CIC, based at Grove House Stables in Nottinghamshire, set up his riding school 30 years ago, with one horse and one pony, on his family farm.

“Horses had always been my route to engage and feel of worth,” he explains. “I was fortunate enough to have the ability to ride and train with superb people, but that’s not something that’s available to everyone. My passion had always been dressage but I realised my real passion was training, and giving people opportunities.

“I know the sweat and tears of the horse industry – but I also know the tremendous opportunity we have and, unfortunately, we don’t celebrate enough what horses can do for people.”

Andrew is one of a number of centres across the country delivering the British Horse Society’s Changing Lives Through Horses programme, which aims to help young people who are not engaged with education or society, with astonishing success.

“It’s not a riding course, it’s about developing life skills and self-esteem; it’s about teamwork and communication,” Andrew says. “It is also about English and maths; how many buckets of feed does that horse have, and what about if the horse only has half of that? One child said, ‘The horse will be cross,’ and I thought that was lovely, and of course correct.”

Like all riding centres, Andrew’s had to close during the first lockdown, but during the latest lockdown, those offering therapeutic riding have been allowed to continue, providing a lifeline to those who need it most.

“There are young people who otherwise wouldn’t have come out of their rooms, except for meals,” he says. “When we went into lockdown, I realised how much we need a community, and how much they need us; one of my girls took some ponies out for a walk yesterday and she had 20 people looking at them via FaceTime, and saying how much of a difference it made to see them. It took us half an hour, and what a difference it made.”

Hayley Squirrell, of Squirrells Riding School in Kent, also delivers the Changing Lives programme, which she says has been of great benefit during lockdown.

“It’s made a massive difference,” she says. “For some of the students, it’s the only time they feel relaxed; they’re less anxious, their depression isn’t so bad. It’s their outlet.

“One student in particular, who’s in care – I don’t know where he’d be this lockdown without the horses. Many of these people have suicidal thoughts or are self- harming, or that’s what they’d be like if they weren’t coming here.”

Chloe Whiccombe has an idea of where she would be were it not for horses. The 23-year-old joined the Discovery programme at Bristol-based charity HorseWorld in autumn 2019, having attempted to take her own life.

“I’d always liked animals and horses, and when they offered me a place on the course I said ‘Yes’, as I wasn’t doing anything,” she says. “It was a big opportunity, but I didn’t know how big.”

With no thought other than the fact spending time with horses might help, Chloe started the course, and stayed. This winter, when the charity was applying for apprentices, she applied and was successful, so this lockdown, she has been there full-time.

“This is the first time I’ve had a job where I’m happy and I look forward to going to work,” she says. “I can’t wait; it’s become my life.

“If I hadn’t had it, this lockdown I’d just be sitting in my house, feeling bad. It would have been awful; just being able to go out for one walk when you have mental health issues, or in general, is really hard, but this means I go out, I’m sociable, and I’m being productive, for the first time.”

Chloe says from the start she liked the way she could be herself with the horses; that she did not have to “put a face on” and pretend she was happy, and that talking to a horse can be easier than to another person.

This is something the Discovery staff have seen before; young people may not have spoken to another person for months, but within a couple of sessions, they will talk to a horse. There is often a bond of empathy to make the connection, as the horses who take part in the programme have often been rescued from bad situations that strike a chord with some of the participants.

“It’s an amazing opportunity we’re given every day, to work with these horses and young people, and the impact our rescued horses can have is unbelievable,” says Discovery course leader Sharon Howell. “When we reopened in September, people were desperate to come back, and the young people were saying what a difference it made. Not being able to access us, they felt abandoned, and to be able to come back is a real lifeline.

“Some of the girls who come on a Wednesday were saying that just to have this got them through the week; that’s massive.”

Sharon says that with ever-changing Covid restrictions playing havoc with routines and plans, the unchanging presence of the horses and staff has been the one constant for the young people to hold on to.

“There’s one student who was really struggling at school; we worked really hard with her to open lines of communication, and get her to re-engage with her education, then lockdown happened,” Sharon says. “She was in year 11 and unable to take her exams, which she’d worked so hard for, and she was so disappointed.

“But she returned to us, and she’s just found out she’s been accepted at Hartpury. She’s not just re-engaged with education, she’s achieved her dream, and that’s phenomenal.”

Horses can be therapy to all of us, as well as partners in sport and members of the family, something amateur showjumper, nurse and mother Jessie Tamman, who also runs her family’s livery yard, knows very well.

“The first lockdown was absolutely surreal,”she says. “Social media took over; I had to take myself off it because people didn’t really believe it [about the virus] so you felt like you were fighting a losing battle at work and then outside it too.

“Lots of riders were arguing about not being able to go to shows, but at work, we were FaceTiming people’s family members because they were dying, and that was the only way they could say goodbye.”

As Britain basked in a beautiful spring last year, Jessie was working back-to-back night shifts, not seeing the sun. Even on her days off, she would often get a call to say a colleague had come down with the virus, and could she come in for a few hours? She always did.

“It was so hard, and it still is,” she says. “The girls in intensive care are fighting battles every day. You’re under so much pressure because everyone’s tired, but fighting for their patients; you get to know them, and if Covid kills them, you feel you’ve lost someone, too.”

Jessie is now working in a prison hospital as well, and looking after her two-year-old son, but she manages to find time to ride.

“It’s somewhere I can switch off,” she says. “I don’t necessarily have to go to shows to enjoy my horses; even a 10-minute ride gives me my sanity back, and I’m a different person.

“Horses are so calming, aren’t they? I think they’re better listeners than anyone; I tell mine everything.

“Sometimes I think I’m too tired to ride, but as soon as I get on, I’m glad I’ve done it.”

Jessie says she considers herself lucky to have her job, but also to live on a farm and have access to her horses.

“Hopefully things will pick up soon, and people can rebuild,” she says. “It’s just a case of having to [cope] at the moment, but we will be fine, we’ll get there in the end. And I can’t wait to get my white jodhpurs back on again.”

With the end of lockdown now in sight, Andrew believes horses will have a major part to play in the recovery.

“Horses have saved me at various points, and that’s why I believe I have to harness their power,” he says. “There will be a huge demand coming out of lockdown; we’re already hearing reports.

“We need to think about the relevance of these programmes, and find out how the riding schools, which play a fundamental role in society, can survive, because if we lose them, they won’t come back.

“Horses are inspirational, and even if you might not feel that when you’ve been thrown over the other side of the jump, you still know. Maybe one thing to come out of this negative Covid situation is the opportunity to reboot, re-engage and redirect what we can do in the horse world to be relevant in modern society.

Horse registration extensions and fresh plans to allow major competitions to go ahead have been released by British Dressage (BD) as part of its plans to safely restart.

BD has announced affiliated activities will resume in England on 29 March, with all BD members encouraged to “stay safe, stay local”, with no major fixtures before 30 April to give people time to properly prepare.

This means the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships and Petplan Area Festival finals, originally due to be held at Hartpury from 14 to 18 April, have been postponed.

A number of other major fixtures have been cancelled or postponed; 60% of these affected by lockdown are now rescheduled, or “close to confirming” revisited dates.

Qualification criteria have also been reviewed for the summer season and adjustments made.

“A great deal of work has gone into pulling a plan together which provides competition opportunities for as many members as possible within the restricted timeframe available and I’d like to thank everyone involved for their input,” said Jason Brautigam, BD chief executive.

“I hope this operational plan gives us all a clear route forward and, provided we all continue to train and compete safely within our protocols, we will be able to get activity back under way in line with the Government milestones.

“For those members in Scotland and Wales, rest assured we’ll get everyone back in action as soon as restrictions allow. There are still some elements to be finalised but we will keep members updated regularly as the situation evolves over coming weeks.”

All BD shows and training will run under the Covid-safe protocols and guidance put in place in 2020, with social distancing, hygiene measures, restricted numbers (one additional person per combination) and an “arrive, compete and leave’” policy to minimise contact with others.

BD has pledged to review these as Government restrictions are relaxed and in line with its own operational plan, to allow a phased return to activity.

It is anticipating that on-site retail, trade stands and outdoor catering should be able to reopen from 12 April, while spectators and indoor catering could return from 17 May.

The BD board has agreed to a further three-month extension of full and club horse registrations, in lieu of the suspension of BD competitions in January, February and March 2021. This will be automatically applied to horses whose owners are current, paid BD members, with a valid membership as of 28 February.

BD has also relaxed its requirement for all horses to have had a flu booster within six months and 21 days of a competition, until 30 June 2021. The 12-month rule remains in place for all BD-registered horses, regardless of whether or not they are competing.

“We strongly recommend that owners get up to date with the six-monthly booster at the earliest opportunity to minimise the risk of equine influenza spreading once horses begin mixing again,” said a BD spokesman.

“The current situation in Europe, where there has been a major outbreak of EHV-1 resulting in horses losing their lives, highlights the importance of vaccination and stringent biosecurity practices.”

British Showjumping (BS) has been working with organisers and other stakeholders to draw up its own plan for the return of competition and training.

A number of qualifiers and championships have been rescheduled, the full details of which can be found on the BS plan for sport resumption.

As part of this, BS is working with international organisers, county shows and those planning to run international/area trials, to provide a suitable number of classes at gold league level, given the challenges associated with Brext and the EHV-1 outbreak in mainland Europe.

“We are all looking forward to the resumption of British Showjumping activity however we would also like to remind everyone that adherence to Covid protocols at any British Showjumping activity is imperative if we are to ensure the sport functions in a safe environment for all attending,” said a BS statement.

“Please remember your horses have also had a long period of lockdown so be mindful of this when planning your return to competition.

“Stay safe, stay local and enjoy your horses.”

H&H finds out more about the decision to cancel Badminton 2021, and speaks to riders and coaches to find out what this means, especially in an Olympic year

THE eventing world has reacted with sadness and understanding after Covid forced the cancellation of Badminton Horse Trials for the second year running.

The Gloucestershire CCI5* said in October it planned to run in 2021 (5-9 May) behind closed doors and as recently as two weeks ago said everything was “in hand”.

On Monday (1 March) organisers said with “great disappointment and regret” the CCI5* and grassroots championships were cancelled.

“Despite the encouraging Government announcements and rollout of the vaccine, the situation still remains fragile and unpredictable,” it stated.

“Following consultation between Badminton, Public Health England and South Gloucestershire Council it has been deemed that due to the scale and location of the horse trials it is not possible to secure the surrounding area in the proximity of the event site.”

It added the health and safety of all those involved and the local community “remains Badminton’s priority” and the level of operation and public health risk was “agreed by all concerned to be unacceptable”.

Crowdfunding, as happened with Kentucky CCI5* (22-25 April) — whose entries close on 23 March — was not a solution, as local public health rather than finances were behind Badminton’s cancellation.

A Badminton spokesman told H&H that as the event site sits within the proximity of Badminton village, it was impossible to secure.

“It is not what we can control – the issue is what we can’t control in terms of people going about their daily business,” she said, stressing that the health and safety of the local community remains Badminton’s priority.

“We did look at postponing but unfortunately this is not possible due to factors including, broadcast rights, Badminton Estate farming programme and fixture congestion.”

Imogen Murray, eighth in 2019 aboard five-star specialist Ivar Gooden, whom she was preparing for their fourth Badminton, told H&H: “Obviously I’m really disappointed, especially as the news has been quite positive.”

She added that Bramham or Luhmühlen are now on the cards, but she is also keeping a close eye on the developing EHV-1 situation in Spain.

“Everything was heading in the right direction, so it’s a bit of a shock. It’s one of those things; it’s sad, but I do understand,” she said, adding that while everyone is keen to get going again, it would be a shame to rush and risk a setback when so much work has gone into safely getting back to normal.

This would have been the first CCI5* and Badminton for Susie Berry, who is on the Irish Tokyo potential squad.

“We were very excited, but it is one of those things,” she said, adding she is particularly sad for the owners of her Badminton contender, Ringwood LB.

While Badminton wasn’t essential as a qualification for Susie and her listed Tokyo potential rides, it was a goal in its own right and a chance to get experience “at a big event with more pressure”.

“It’s so sad for the organisers, owners and such a big team of people trying to make it all happen,” she said.

British Equestrian eventing World Class performance manager Dickie Waygood told H&H it is hugely disappointing and he is “absolutely heartbroken for Jane [Tuckwell, Badminton director] and the team, and likewise for competitors and owners”.

“Behind the scenes, I know that everyone is looking at every other option for contingency plans [for their own competition routes] and I have confidence that no stone will be left unturned,” he said, adding being flexible and having those back-up plans is important in the world we live in.

“With regard to it being an Olympic year, although we have challenges over travelling with Brexit, there are still a number of four-stars in the calendar.”

BE chief executive Jude Matthews echoed the disappointment.

“The team has worked hard to do everything they could to make it happen and we are fully supportive of their decision,” she told H&H. “With plans under way for the season to start at Easter, we very much look forward to seeing eventing action again soon, with Badminton back in the calendar for 2022.”

Badminton Horse Trials 2021, which was due to run 5-9 May, has been cancelled.

The event was due to be held behind closed doors with no spectators, but today’s statement from the event said:

“Despite the encouraging Government announcements and rollout of the vaccine, the situation still remains fragile and unpredictable at this time.

“The announcement of last October to run behind closed doors was with the optimism that it would be possible, so the decision that we are not in a position to continue to plan to run the event at the beginning of May has not been taken without significant thought and consideration,” said Badminton director Jane Tuckwell. “I am sorry that the 2021 event has become unworkable despite our best efforts, but I am so grateful to all those that have offered support and encouragement over the past few months.”

Competitors have questioned in the past why abandonment insurance is compulsory and whether there could be an opt in/out option, giving them freedom to choose whether to accept the BE-chosen policy, arrange their own insurance or take the risk. The issue is now under review, and H&H finds out more

DISCUSSIONS are under way to find the best way of protecting competitors’ and organisers’ cash when events are forced to cancel.

Abandonment insurance has been a hot topic in eventing, coming to a head in 2020 owing to a wrangle with underwriters over whether they should pay out for fixtures cancelled as a result of the pandemic. British Eventing (BE) won the argument and the outstanding claims for spring events were settled by autumn.

The topic of insuring entry fees has sparked debate over the years. BE introduced the abandonment insurance premium in 2009, replacing BE’s own abandonment fund, for which competitors are charged a non-negotiable premium on top of their entry fee.

It means if a fixture is cancelled, the competitor gets most of the entry fee back (minus the premium) and the organiser also receives a payout, so both sides are protected.

But it comes at a cost, this year ranging from £10.69 to £57.33 per entry depending on the class. For example, it takes the entry fee of a BE80–BE105 class (with no prize money) from £72.22 to £82.91, plus a start fee of up to £17.44.

Competitors have questioned in the past why it is compulsory and whether there could be an opt in/out option, giving them freedom to choose whether to accept the BE-chosen policy, arrange their own insurance or take the risk.

The policy, which does not cover Covid-related cancellations, remains in place this year and BE has appointed a panel made up of people from across the sport to review it for 2022 and beyond.

“With the challenges the last year has brought in relation to pandemic-related cancellations, alongside the pressures to keep the cost of competing as low as possible for members, it is felt it is a good time to undertake a full review of the insurance,” said a BE spokesman.

Eventing Riders Association (ERA) International president Bruce Haskell welcomed the review.

“It’s a sign that stakeholders from all three groups have been listened to by BE,” he told H&H, adding that ERA has put forward an amateur and a professional to sit on the panel. “The only way to get agreement is to involve all parties in creating that.”

He said it comes down to looking at whether the policy is fit for purpose, does it suit everybody, whether the flat rate is fair given spring and autumn fixtures have a higher risk of weather issues, and whether it could be geared slightly more towards rider choice.

“At BE100 and below, it makes the difference in price between affiliated and unaffiliated,” he said, adding that this ties in with the issue of affordability of the sport.

Pandemic cover

BE negotiated a specific “pandemic refund policy” for 2020, agreed with organisers. This meant competitors would receive a minimum of 30% of the net entry fee, plus VAT, for Covid-related cancellations up to three days ahead of the event.

This is not continuing as a blanket rule for 2021, instead there will be event-specific policies.

A BE spokesman told H&H the British Eventing Organisers Association is working closely with all its organisers on this.

“In essence, each event will clearly state what their individual refund policy will be on their online event schedule,” he said.

“Therefore, each organiser can decide on a policy that best reflects their circumstance whilst providing a fair outcome to the competitor.”

The Royal Windsor Horse Show dates 2021 have been pushed back from its usual mid May position to run from 1 to 4 July, organisers have confirmed.

The event had been due to take place from 12 to 16 May but after prime minister Boris Johnson revealed his route out of lockdown, in which it was announced that legal limits on contact between people would apply until 21 June, organisers made the announcement.

Show director Simon Brooks-Ward said the team is looking forward to running “a near-as-normal show at Windsor” in July.

“The start of this year has been difficult for all live events, but recent Government announcements have given us the confidence to go full steam ahead with the organising of Royal Windsor, which includes planning for an audience.”

The emphasis will be on safety, organisers said, and adherence to any Covid-related guidelines applicable at the time.

A spokesman said the show will run as close to its normal format is possible, with international showjumping, dressage, endurance and carriage driving, plus national showing classes.

The Windsor pageant, which was scheduled to take place in the evenings, will not take place, the spokesman added, but the show will feature “a bumper edition of equestrian displays, acts and music within the main show programme, which will take advantage of the long summer evenings”.

Tickets will be available in the near future. If guidelines change and spectators cannot attend, all buyers will be refunded. The organisers have also promised more hours of live-streaming from the event, so “everyone can enjoy Royal Windsor online even if they are not able to attend in person”.

Endurance GB will open competitive ride entries at the beginning of next month, following the Government’s announcement that outdoor sport can resume in England from 29 March, but the flagship Golden Horseshoe Ride is cancelled.

One of the calendar’s feature events, the famous ride on Exmoor was scheduled for 22-23 May, but it will not take place this year.

“A combination of personal circumstances” affecting the Chisholm family, who organise the event, has led to its cancellation, along with uncertainty over “the impact of the restrictions on accommodation on Exmoor itself as UK tourism picks up”.

Other highlights of the endurance season look secure, with King’s Forest Summer hosting the inter-regional championships on 18-20 June and Cirencester accommodating the home internationals on 9-11 July.

This year’s national championship rides will continue at the British Horse Feeds and Golden Paste Company’s Red Dragon Festival of Endurance, which is scheduled for a week earlier than usual, on 24-27 September.

The UK’s FEI ride calendar has not yet been confirmed pending updates on international travel arrangements.

The first competitive rides of the endurance season are now expected to take place at Bilbury Salt Way in the Cotswolds and Tilford in Surrey on 11 April.

Phil Nunnerley, chairman of Endurance GB, said: “We welcome the Government’s announcement, and the re-opening of our sport is eagerly anticipated by everyone involved from riders to crews, organisers and volunteers. There is a great deal of excitement and momentum building for the 2021 season and we are anticipating a bumper year for the sport.

“Our major championship rides are all held at large venues which lend themselves to social distancing. So while these events may not have the usual social accompaniments this year, we are as confident as we can be that they will run, restrictions permitting.”

He added that the cancellation of the 2021 Golden Horseshoe Ride was “a great pity” but for “entirely understandable reasons as the Chisholm family will be re-opening their business the previous weekend but there were also uncertainties connected with accommodation locally and attempts to find an alternative weekend later in the year had drawn a blank”.

Endurance GB announced that Covid safety measures would be put in place at all events, including “health pre-screening and a full audit trail for all attendees”.

“Huge demand” is anticipated when entries open, and numbers are expected to be capped according to the social distancing capacities of each venue.

Esther Young, Endurance GB’s operations director, said: “It will be vitally important for attendees to continue to follow the Covid safety measures, and we anticipate that we will be living with social distancing for much of the season.

“We are confident in our measures. There were zero transmissions at post lockdown events last year, and we were running events safely right up to the Christmas lockdown.”

Endurance GB’s calendar may still be subject to change and riders are being advised to check the sport’s website and social media regularly for updates. Welsh rides remain on hold at present pending announcements from the Welsh First Minister on the plans to relax Covid restrictions in Wales.

Riding schools may not open nor is arena or facility hire allowed until 29 March, the British Horse Society (BHS) has confirmed.

Prime minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday (22 February) that schools would reopen on 8 March, when there would also be slight changes to the restrictions on meeting people outdoors, and that sport would restart 21 days later.

The BHS has been reviewing the Government’s 2021 Covid spring response, and has now clarified what this means for riding schools, livery yards and coaches in England.

“With the exception of riding schools that also operate as further education colleges, the current restrictions do remain in force until 29 March,” a spokesman said, adding that after this date, riding schools can open again for lessons, with the “rule of six” restriction in place.

Until then, coaches can still give one-to-one lessons at a horse’s home yard, and riders can meet one person outside their households to hack with, but arenas and facilities may not be hired out and travel of horses should only be on welfare grounds.

From 29 March, riding schools can reopen to the public, outdoor and covered area and facility hire can resume, plus horses may travel for lessons and exercise. Coaching and lessons can involve up to five people, plus the trainer, and riders can hack in groups of up to six people.

Organised sport and clinics can resume, and travel of horses to such events is allowed, although the Government directive is still to “stay local”. There will be no restriction on numbers of people at shows, as long as social distancing measures are adhered to.

From 12 April at the earliest, these restrictions on numbers will apply but indoor facilities such as horse simulators may open, and residential camps can run, if the accommodation is self-contained and restricted to one household, such as staying overnight in a lorry.

From 17 May, at the earliest, a 30-person gathering limit will apply outdoors, so group lesson sizes can increase and spectators will be allowed to return to events.

From 21 June, it is hoped there will be no restrictions on the number of people who can meet.

Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the nation’s route out of lockdown on 23 February.

The BEF is working with Horsescotland and member bodies to establish what it means for the equestrian industry, but it looks as though activity could restart on 26 April.

Lockdown restrictions continue in Wales, with 12 March the next review date.

Those of us who produce and ride show horses owe a huge debt to breeders. If it wasn’t for the time, effort and money they put into rearing potential stars, we would be lost.

Chatting to David Dixon – who is the current chairman of Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain (SHB(GB)) and has a wealth of knowledge on breeding top-quality horses and ponies for all disciplines – I was heartened to hear that many studs and stallion owners are getting lots of inquiries from people who think now could be the time to breed.

It’s pleasing that in these uncertain times, people are still continuing to breed top-quality British animals.

However, breed societies will always stress that breeding from a mare must be a choice made because she has a good temperament as well as quality conformation and movement. Advice on this and the choice of stallion is always available from the societies and organisations such as SHB(GB) and the British Horse Foundation.

The fact that you love your mare is not always enough to justify breeding from her, even if you intend to keep the foal permanently. Things do not always go to plan and a good youngster will always find a good home more easily than one with less potential. Although horse sales are proving buoyant at the moment, this might not always be the case.

In hindsight, I wish I had put my own lovely hunter mare in foal last year. She would hopefully have produced a beautiful foal during 2021, without missing too many shows. I am now hoping for a partial season later this year, organised in a safe way, even if we have to see some format changes in order to get going. This will give societies and members something to look forward to.

Staying safe

Several organisations and individuals have run shows during the pandemic and we have enjoyed competitions while staying within Government regulations.

I am planning to run a training show in June if it is permitted. This will be a two-day fixture, with one day comprising training and grading and the second day for competition.

I have already received tremendous support from sponsors and helpers and have had an incredibly generous offer to provide a venue. All proceeds will go to SHB(GB) and to the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.

Off-the-track stars

Soaring horse prices have made the idea of buying an ex-racehorse attractive to those on a tighter budget, as they can be purchased relatively cheaply when they finish their racing career and are in need of a new job in a different discipline.

It is true that there is a job for every horse but we must all be aware that the transformation from racehorse to a different career can be challenging. It is so rewarding to see these great athletes enjoying a new future in their retirement from the racetrack. The classes for retrained racehorses are a great spectacle and continue to grow in popularity.

Please get as much history and detail of the horse’s soundness and temperament as you can before you embark on your new project. Trainers and owners are passionate to see their horses go on to new things, so they will be only too helpful.

I have had much success and pleasure retraining ex-racehorses and have only had one that did not make it into the ring. I felt that he would not be suitable for a ride judge, which is so important in showing. The most important advice I can give is to be patient and take your time.

THE bulbs are in bloom, the grass is growing and, by the time you read this column, we should have some more information around the Government’s lockdown exit strategy. I am looking forward to hearing this, as I’m sure the rest of British Dressage’s (BD) 17,000 members are, too.

Dressage, as of course you will know, is all about training. It is so exciting to see the breadth of opportunities available within BD for horses of all shapes and sizes – not only to strut their stuff in the arena, but to be trained correctly along the scales of training.

Riders can take confidence that whether their equine partner is a 17.2hh warmblood, a patchy cob or a retrained racehorse; their mounts are judged according to the same scale of marking.

When I started out in my career, dressage was considered an elitist sport. I went to Goodwood and somehow won the Young Dressage Rider Championship in 1985, but back then I did not have a clue about the ways in which the sport was perceived, or about anything to do with dressage really.

But just look at what is on offer today; how accessible the sport is to grassroots riders, how Royal Navy, Army and RAF riders have got teams going with support from their sports boards, how nurses and paramedics have taken solace with their horses – and the hugely popular Quest Club offers everyone a chance to be on a team if they want to.

Welfare concerns caused by Calais delays

I have been very concerned hearing the horror stories coming out of the port at Calais since Brexit.

While we dressage riders have been holding fire on travelling to mainland Europe to compete because of scheduling, lockdown and to assess the challenges, the intelligence gathered by our showjumpers has been extremely troubling, as Graham Fletcher highlighted in his column (11 February).

I have heard reports of horses being held for eight or more hours, standing in their trucks, while veterinary teams check and stamp the endless pages of newly created health certificates. These have gone from a single document to between 30 and 40 pages, all of which need to be filled in with the right colour pen and deletions made in a prescribed way.

How does this assist in improving animal welfare – a principle the EU and the UK committed to upholding in the long-awaited trade agreement signed on Christmas Eve?

My view is that it is not a Brexit blame game; the powers that be are lobbying for improvement on our behalf, but it is key to get consent from all the politicos involved for the stapler-wranglers and pen-pushers to reconfigure this agreement. A rewrite is the only way to sort out this mess, and it seems there is will on both sides of the Channel.

When my friend and fellow Olympian Richard Davison reported that he is currently in touch with the head honcho at the Port of Calais, who has personally been down to see the situation, that was great news. Apparently, the gentleman in question is horsey.

Transporting competition horses, who already have ID, FEI passports and up-to-date injections, who also have surveillance when travelling to FEI competition stables, cannot pose a threat.

The Sunshine Tours that we used to compete on offered amateur and professional riders a chance to progress over a few weeks (not always in the sunshine, believe me) and a lot of fun. And then of course there is the impact on European shows as part of preparation for championships. There must be a better way.

Looking at home and away, it’s nearly spring and hope springs eternal.

The equestrian world is hopeful of a return to competition and training next month in line with the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plans for the easing of coronavirus restrictions in England on Monday (22 February), starting with the return of schools, and changes to meeting people outside, on 8 March.

A British Equestrian (BEF) spokesman said the Prime Minister’s roadmap “would indicate” that those equestrian centres and other businesses that are education or training providers could start one-to-one sessions from 8 March, while most other activity – sport or leisure – can resume from 29 March.

He added that BEF member bodies are working on various “return to play” plans that are set to be released in the coming days with more details.

The Government roadmap indicates that spectators may be able to return to sporting events, with restrictions, from 17 May.

The situation is slightly different in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Lockdown restrictions continue in Wales, with 12 March the next review date. In Northern Ireland, lockdown has been extended until 1 April, with a review on 18 March.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the nation’s route out of lockdown yesterday (23 February).

The BEF is working with Horsescotland and member bodies to establish what it means for the equestrian industry, but it looks as though activity could restart on 26 April.

British Equestrian interim chief executive Iain Graham said: “While there is still detail to be clarified, we now have a strong indication from the Governments of England and Scotland of when we can return to activity, training, competing and just enjoying our equestrian lives once again. It’s very welcome news and gives hope to many that an end is in sight, provided of course we all play our part.

“For our stakeholders in Wales and Northern Ireland, we’ll continue to push for the opening up of activity in a safe timeframe.

“Thank you to all of you in the equestrian community, it’s been a difficult 11 months with so many impacted, but now we can look to building our industry back and recover stronger than ever.”

A statement from British Eventing (BE) said it is finalising its sport resumption plans for all levels, with more information coming soon, and is continuing work on a pathway for elite athletes targeting Badminton, Kentucky and the Olympics.

The statement added that BE has contacted athletes identified as elite to give them further details, and is planning the first “elite specific” training session at Aston-le-Walls (16-17 March) and the initial “elite specific” competition the following week (22-24 March).

Entries will be strictly for these elite athletes and will be run “in strict accordance with Government regulations and Covid-19 protocols”.

British Dressage (BD) is planning for its organised competition and training to resume in England on 29 March, with the possibility of competitors being allowed back to “stay away” shows from 12 April.

It has suggested that spectators may be able to return, and travel to overseas competitions resume, from 17 May; with “all shows, training and regional camps” to resume “as normal” from 21 June, in line with any face mask or social distancing measures that may be in place.

“This is the news we’ve been waiting for and, although we still have to wait a number of weeks before organised sport can begin again, we do now at least have some indicative dates to enable us to plan ahead more effectively,” said BD chief executive Jason Braugtigam.

“While we do of course have to proceed with a degree of caution, these roadmaps do provide a clearer path for us to follow from April onwards.

“The team at BD HQ is now finalising an operational plan for the resumption of activity, based on the various dates and options we had already prepared. It’s now a case of pulling everything together with our organisers and venues to produce an achievable programme of fixtures that will benefit all members, whatever their level, goals and aims are for the remainder of 2021. We hope to unveil this next week, so you can begin planning your campaigns for the season ahead, return to active training and start to get competition ready.”

He added: “I’m proud of the resilience shown by the dressage community over the past year, particularly during these long winter months – and it now feels that, thanks to a great deal of patience and fortitude, we can finally see light at the end of the tunnel.

“We all still have a part to play to help achieve each step or phase in the relaxation of restrictions, but we can all share in renewed optimism that it’s now only a matter of weeks until we return to some semblance of normality.”

Point-to-pointing is planning to restart in Britain on the week commencing 29 March, with an updated fixtures list expected by the end of this week.

“This will still leave 11-12 weeks of the season,” said Point-to-Point Authority chief executive Peter Wright.

“I know that many of you will be concerned about the going, but I note that one wet year in the last decade had fixtures with 100 runners in June. Furthermore, there are several courses out there which traditionally have good going late in the season.

“In terms of the paying public and owners, the Government position is not totally clear. However, I am afraid that no-one other than participants will be able to attend up until April 12 at the least. We will open it up as soon as we can.”

British Team Chasing is working with three event organisers on plans to run fixtures on three Sundays between 4-25 April inclusive. The National Team Chase Championship class will not take place this year.

Preparations are also under way for fixtures later this year, with more information on both the spring and autumn 2021 seasons expected shortly.

A teenage rider has been able to turn problems into opportunities after she was taken under the wing of a local eventer and producer when her family caught Covid.

The ambitious rider faced a series of difficulties caused by the pandemic but is now helping to produce competition horses as well as her own jumping pony — a chance she would not have had if Covid had not struck.

During the first lockdown, Robyn Perfitt kept her ponies on DIY livery but the yard owner shut the yard and asked everyone to turn their ponies away or switch to full livery.

The then 13-year-old was only able to visit her ponies Bradford Fantasy, a Dartmoor, and Barkway Versace, a show pony, over the field fence.

“It hit her hard,” said her mother Joanne Ford-Perfitt. “She has ridden in showing since the age of five and had her heart set on starting the ponies showjumping and eventing, but it put a stop to everything.

“She couldn’t ride her ponies or spend much time with them and with school closed as well I was worried about the impact it might have on her mental health.”

Joanne spoke to local eventer Myles West and asked if Robyn, who is now 14, could do some yard work part-time.

As Robyn proved a great help around the yard and was capable in the saddle, Myles started to involve her in riding horses that were being backed and schooled for clients.

“Robyn first sat on a lovely pony that was in for training and quickly moved up to Myles’s horses,” her mother said. “Robyn’s dreams all came true at once as she was getting incredible training every day, riding amazing talented horses and learning to showjump to a higher standard.”

Robyn returned to school and also worked hard on her own ponies who she was able to get out showjumping. As both were then outgrown, she had to sell them, and a new pony was bought, Donny (Pride Of Cong). But just after they started getting out to training events, the country went back in to lockdown.

At Christmas Covid hit the family home and Robyn, who tested negative, had to go and stay with her grandparents so she could still take care of Donny.

“Rather than Robyn’s grandparents having to drive back and forth, Myles offered to collect the ponies and take them to his yard,” Joanne said. “Things were difficult, and we’d also recently lost three family members, but for Robyn everything got more exciting as she was able to be based at Myles’ full time.”

Robyn has continued to ride and train with Myles while taking her school Zoom lessons at the yard, also doing school work on the evenings and weekends.

“He gets her on everything, young dressage horses he has bred, a lot of his eventers and showjumpers and her riding has changed completely, she can sit on a big fit powerful warmblood and be effective now,” her mother said. “Robyn has been offered to showjump one of his top horses Hatrick2 this year. She’ll be also competing Donny this year in British Showjumping and British Eventing as soon as shows start.

“The pandemic may have devastated the country but if the schools hadn’t have closed, Robyn wouldn’t have had the opportunities she has,” she added.

A veterinary practice in Wales is offering free visits, vaccinations and wormers to riding schools hit hard by lockdown restrictions.

Abbey Equine Clinic in Abergavenny, south Wales, is offering a package to its clients, with the support of pharmaceutical companies.

County council-registered riding schools that are clients of the practice will each be given a voucher for a free visit, three equine flu and tetanus vaccinations and three wormers, to be used this month or next.

A spokesman for the practice said it wanted to do something to help its riding school clients during a very tough time.

“Most of us have happy memories of learning to ride on riding school ponies as children,” added clinic director Emma Jones MRCVS.

“Running the practice throughout lockdown has been hard, but nothing compared to the financial strain these riding establishments have been under, with all the overheads and none of the income. Organising this support has been something practical we can do to help.”
