“Is BYRDS the set pathway to British team selection? Although strenuously denied by those in charge, being on the scheme is widely perceived as essential if a young rider is to be considered for the team.

“According to Islay Auty, chairman of the under-21 committee: ‘It’s not compulsory to be considered for teams. Selection is done from the Premier League shows.’ So winning a place on a British team means winning at Premier League shows next spring. It’s results that count.”

“So DEFRA has finally abandoned the idea of making passports compulsory by the year’s end. Thank goodness they’ve seen sense. There is still much to clarify on this issue, and tonnes of owner-educating to be done.

“I believe equine passports can serve a useful purpose, not least for horse buyers weary of being sold horses which are older than actually advertised. But neither this, nor the value of a database stuffed with breeding information, will come about unless the system is made as tamperproof as possible.”

“The offspring of the pop fraternity are not always 100% normal. However, I think we’ve discovered one who is utterly normal. Otis Ferry, 21, son of Bryan, is in his third season as amateur whipper in with the Middleton.

“Otis spent four months this summer riding out at Ballydoyle for Aiden O’Brien. It didn’t get off to the best of starts – on his second morning, a horse cracked a fetlock while he was on board. However, by the second-last week his riding had improved enough to sit on The Great Gatsby – in trot.”

“Pau was an interesting, challenging and exciting competition. Anyone who thought it was going to be a dressage competition was mistaken. As a series, the World Cup is the right idea, but its first year was far from perfect.

“The series, which should lend itself to sponsorship and television, should have been a vehicle for older, well-known horses, but most people didn’t have anything to ride by the end of the season. A lot of top horses were missing. But as a concept the World Cup should be encouraged.”

“Irish shows always have a flavour all of their own, and the Belfast Indoor International Horse Show should be no exception. Riders and spectators alike can expect a warm welcome and hospitality aplenty.

“With a total prize fund of £210,000, including a £27,000-to-the-winner grand prix, many will be disappointed that only six Britons — John, Michael and Robert Whitaker, Nick Skelton, Di Lampard and Robert Smith — have been invited to Belfast. The organisers have obviously decided to be selective.”

“To get a passport or not to get a passport? That is the question — and the answer is that everyone is getting even more confused.

“I’ve already made my views clear about passports — they’re a waste of time, a waste of money and a waste of space. But I’ve done my best to be a law-abiding citizen and get ready for the inevitable. And excuse me for being cynical, but hasn’t the whole ill thought-out business been a great way of generating income from horses for the government?”

New H&H columnist speaks out

“I have long admired the super-cool Ulla Salzgeber as she stacked up multiple wins in World Cup finals and international championships over the past few years. Most of us have envied her riding and her horse, Rusty. But we do not envy her present predicament.

“How many of us could have handled the strain if we had found ourselves at the centre of a doping scandal? But Ulla has handled it, creating a protective bubble around herself as she gritted her teeth and won double gold at the European Championships at Hickstead with displays of superlative riding.

“But nevertheless, I am troubled and bemused. In dressage — and most other horse sports — we are desperately trying to stand shoulder to shoulder with other modern Olympic sports. So the way that the whole situation has been handled is bizarre.

“The Olympic movement and international sport famously have a zero-tolerance policy towards athletes testing positive. So why are we so far from a conclusion? For some reason, the FEI seems to be sanctioning a gentlemanly pace whereby the rider can delay the proceedings for a long period of time.

“I can see that the FEI is being fair to the competitor and it is good — from a human rights point of view — to be allowed extensions to the deadline in order to prepare a case. But this slow pace leaves the FEI, as a regulator, open to the charge of neglecting its duty to be fair to all competitors.

“All riders could be vulnerable to unintentional doping. But the system for dealing with these positive tests has to work and has to be seen to work. Our sport must be clean from both intentional and unintentional doping and we must accept the consequences.

“When you look at the handling of high-profile positives like this and then compare it with other Olympic sports, it is embarrassing. Both sides have their evidence, and the paperwork is now with the FEI judicial committee. For the good of the sport, let’s get the file closed on this one.”

“A long-standing tradition has ended this month with the demise of the opportunity for three riders outside the BSJA’s top 10 rankings list to qualify for Olympia.

“The chance to qualify for Olympia gave our good national riders something to aim for. It was an especially good opportunity for up-and-coming young riders.

“But you can’t stop progress and we may have to accept that British entries at the show will be restricted to the top 10.”

“Trainers may be swanning off to Santa Anita and Melbourne with their older horses at this time of year, but back at home it is anything but glory. All those yearlings bought at the autumn sales are coming in to be broken and across the land brave test pilots are being fired into orbit.

“It doesn’t need me to tell you that some horses are little dollies to break and others are very difficult, depending on their character, their breeding, how they’ve been brought up and how full of grub they’ve been for the sales.”

“It’s a sad truth that being able to ride a bit and having an eye for a horse are two very different things. I know what sort of horse I like on the whole, but when faced with a glut of high calibre animals I’m bamboozled. It was interesting to stand next to people with a real “eye” at BE’s recent Breeding Championships at Tweseldown.

“Being able to spot – with reasonable consistency – the real troopers among the ‘pretty decent’ horses is an amazing talent. As I start to look for a new eventer, how I wish I had it.”

“The highlight for me was the young horse classes [at the national championships], during which Christoph Hess invited spectators to participate in the final judging, which worked really well. Christoph’s explanations, as he carefully directed the en-masse decision-making, were brilliant — the audience showing their approval or otherwise with applause or silence.

“Everyone felt involved and the atmosphere was wonderful. I’d love to see this done again — and wonder how it would go down in the showing world?”

“Taking part in my final horse trial of the season, safety became the topic of the day.

“A flag-bearing steward waved me to a halt midway round the cross-country. The rider in front had had a crashing fall. Ambulances and paramedics were in attendance; the horse had somersaulted on to its rider, who soon regained consciousness.

“Not for the first time, I felt grateful for the expert medics who make our sport possible.”

“For some time now, hunt followers have been asking themselves the following: if the worst happens and hunting is banned, am I going to become involved in civil disobedience by continuing hunting and taking other actions?

“Those whose answer “yes” are posed with another question: who is going to organise them in a way that makes an ass of the law, its makers and enforcers, without inconveniencing anyone else? It’s a question the Alliance has conspicuously failed to address.”

“This year’s well-run Horse of the Year Show felt more like a major midsummer event rather than the final curtain of the showing season. The show ran three weeks earlier than normal and the warm weather was untypical.

“From next year HOYS will revert back to its usual October slot — up to and including 2006.Judges for next year’s show are to be chosen much earlier, and a five-year rule is being introduced to put an end to the return of judges who have officiated at HOYS in recent years.”

“Well done to the organisers of Henley Show, whose big class was boosted to a £2,250 prize-fund, and watered their main ring for three weeks to create perfect going.

“In cases like this the BSJA should reconsider its policy of treating shows the same, regardless of how hard they try to improve. Surely Henley’s efforts deserve a letter of appreciation from our association? While I applaud the BSJA’s training initiatives, nothing improves standards like good competitions and prize-money.”

“The message that Thoroughbreds are among the most adaptable breeds of horse and, with a bit of time, know-how and a few less oats, can convert to almost any job you want, is beginning to get through now.

“Having once ignored the problem as not its own, the BHB is now so keen to look after the welfare of retired racehorses that trainer’s wife and former amateur rider Di Arbuthnot, who runs Retraining of Racehorses, she is given a king’s ransom by the industry to tackle it.”

“It’s hard to believe another season is over. Full marks to Royal Bath and West for introducing an invaluable novice cob class. I wish I could say that the controversies that marred the season have been solved, but the issues of judges’ responsibilities, cob heights and amateur status are still here.

“I make no apology for saying — and writing — exactly what I think: there may be some who would prefer to take a more passive stance, but you can’t make problems go away by ignoring them.”

“There’s no doubting the importance of instilling dedication and attention to detail — even when it comes to the simplest of exercises, such as riding a circle.

“When I was training, riding an incorrect circle resulted in getting off to run the next one. It has been fun passing on this well-remembered punishment.

“A transition at a marker should indeed be at a marker. The marker cannot move…But often we all wish it would!”

“Interspersed among some fine racing at Ascot was a ‘speed jumping’ test event. Every new innovation suffers teething problems, and the main one, from the point of view those who’d paid to go, was the poor visibility they got through numerous layers of fencing — not a problem for BBC cameras.

“While riders support anything that augments our sports’ scant terrestrial coverage, I think someone must speak up for ticket buyers. I hope the fact that the live audience struggled to see is not eclipsed by the judgement of TV producers.”

“After the enthusiasm that greeted HOYS’s move to Birmingham last year, the organisers had a lot to prove. This year, Grandstand Media invested in new structures for superb hospitality lounges overlooking the main arena, one for international owners and another for sponsors.

“HOYS still gives only three tickets per horse, which leaves owners having to fork out for another ticket for the husband, wife or friend. Nevertheless, HOYS remains crucial to our sport, not least because it’s the culmination of our national series.”

“I was a joint-master of the Old Berks hunt for three years, ending two season ago. They were probably the three most stressful years of my life.

“What swayed me was the chairman’s slightly misleading argument ‘and you know, the great thing about it is you can visit other hunts for free’.

“That sold it to me, but what he didn’t tell me is that I’d barely have time to visit my own farmers. Another pack? No chance.”

“If anyone thought that all the Brits had to do was turn up in Punchestown, they had a rude shock. In the end, it took selfless riding to team orders to land the coveted team gold.

“When Over To You missed his step on to the island at the last water, there was no room for error and Yogi Breisner issued team orders to take the long route.

“In the end, the best team won. Let us hope it is not the last European Championships run over the full three-day event.”

“Maureen Summers’s show jumping track [at Blenheim] was, as always, demanding but fair and influential. She has to be one of the best designers of this phase. It is a pity this was her last event before retirement.

“Sometimes the show jumping phase can be disappointing, but here interest was maintained until the end. Horses who weren’t jumping well ended up having three fences down, which is as it should be. The penultimate was a big upright, but it should have been well within the capabilities of horses at this level.”

“A championship show [such as BSPS] gives a clear insight into the general standard of judging. At times this was confusing with judge A awarding 9/20 and judge B 19/20 for the same performance. Fortunately this was not the norm.

“Putting my neck on the block, although I do like the idea of a ‘celebrity’ judge, the supreme of show should only be judged by those on the judges panels. There were two champions in the final line-up who were outstanding on the night but were overlooked for supreme honours.”

“Riders have told me that, although they never use forbidden substances, they know those that do. Some even made a point of telephoning to protest their innocence.

“An international trainer of high repute restored my faith with an email, writing: ‘I don’t believe in pastes, I don’t believe in gadgets, I don’t believe in short cuts, I DO believe in dressage — and heartily recommend it.’

“What can you say about Pippa Funnell? She has had a bad summer, by her standards, and not the greatest build up to Burghley. We can only imagine the pressure she has lived through thinking of the posibility of the $250,000 Rolex Grand Slam. How those pressures must have built when she lost the chance to ride Supreme Rock and Cornerman through minor leg injuries. The fact that she did it, winning her third CCI**** back to back, makes her one of the all time greats. I truly believe that Pippa has done something special that we will not see again for a generation.”

“No eventer has ever won a cheque half as big as the one Pippa Funnell took home for clinching the Rolex Grand Slam, and no one could begrudge her success. She’s worked so hard for it, achieved so much, and coped magnificently under enormous pressure. To have lost it for the sake of a handful of time penalties would have been heartbreaking. Zara Phillips’s rolled show jump, three from home, served only to augment the crowds’ adoration of her. Everyone wants to see her win a four-star, but they didn’t quite want to see it yet, not when it would have meant Pippa forfeiting a quarter of a million bucks. “

“With a show as prestigious as HOYS, showing not only has to be above reproach but it must be seen to be above reproach — which is why the rule [If judging at HOYS, judges may not judge a qualifier in that category during that year] was made in the first place.

“On the most important day of the year, there should be no other days in the judge’s mind that’s the rule! This rule is being broken three times. Rules may be made to be broken in an emergency, but can you see any other justificiation?”

“The only way [to lose weight] is the common sense way. Breaking his arm may not have been regarded by AP McCoy as any sort of blessing in disguise but it might turn out to be so.

“Worried that his weight might get out of control, he has sought professional advice. Now he has given up chocolate, sips mineral water, eats chicken breast with salad and has a gym at home. His weight is now better than it has been for 5yr and you can expect him to be doing 10st on a regular basis this season.”

“Seeing the venue in Athens has made us think positively about it. The main issue for me is the warm-up before the cross-country. There is just a little stretch with two or three fences and then bang, you’re on an Olympic four-star cross-country course.

“It seems a cold-blooded start in comparison to doing Phases A, B and C — like warming up for a novice event — a couple of pops and then you’re on. Being mentally prepared for this will be the main challenge.”

“Britain’s former world champion, David Broome, said: ‘I’ll always remember where I was when the news came through that the British team had failed to qualify for the Olympics. I’m gutted. It’s a tragedy for British show jumping.’

“A tragedy indeed; the repercussions of our loss of Olympic status are incalculable. And when I spoke to them after the European championships, no one could have been more devastated than our team riders, who finished ninth in Donaueschingen.”

“At the ‘new look’ NPS Summer Show, I was invited to judge the experimental British working/sport pony in-hand championship. These classes were judged on the “continental” system — on the triangle — with all three judges scoring individually.

“This method of judging proved popular not only with the spectators, but also with exhibitors, who enjoyed the challenge of performing a different individual show from the norm. This competition has a bright future and may be judged with skating-style marks next year.”

“Oh, wow! Just as chief selector David Trott predicted before the Europeans, we won team bronze. After the medal was ours, Jennie Loriston-Clarke made a speech to the team. ‘Thank you,’ she said, ‘you made us proud to be British.’

“It’s impossible to put it better. Five British riders and those wonderful horses delivered that pride to us all. You lifted your game, rode your socks off, restored hope and enthusiasm and secured a future for our sport. You made us cry tears of joy and every dressage supporter in this country loves you.”

“Last week rejoicing, this week depression. While our dressage squad pulled out personal bests at the Europeans to win an Olympic place, our show jumpers finished ninth in Donaueschingen and thus failed to qualify for Athens.

“It is hard to believe that Britain will not be represented at the Games, and desperately disappointing for the team itself who, by all accounts, fought hard. The irony, of course, is that we have a far richer heritage in show jumping than we do in dressage.”

“I travelled to Athens full of scepticism about what I was going to find. The reality was probably the best Olympic venue I’ve ever seen. Never have visiting nations been so spoilt.

“The training facilities are small, with four dressage arenas and four judging areas. The footing is good, as long as enough water is kept on the dressage areas, and the stadiums are awesome, with the show jumping on grass.

“I cannot begin to guess at the cost of this wonderful facility.”

“When I was a teenager, the only piercings I was interested in were those made in my stirrup leathers so that I could ride short for point-to-pointing. My parents seized on any passing liaison as hope that I was at last “growing out of it”. Of course, the true pony girl never does “grow out of it”. Instead, everybody else has to grow into it.

“First it is the amiable but inexperienced parent, then boys, besotted at the sight of the white breeches so casually hoisted over the J-Lo-style bum.

“It would be wrong to think that pony girls are unaware of the opposite sex. Oh no. Men definitely have a role to play. There are the duties of horse holder, official legger-up, lorry driver, cheque-signer-in-chief, dirty rug carrier, horse catcher-and-dragger, bacon roll provider and, of course, that most important position of “swearee” (the person who stands there in miserable silence while the girl swears).”

“It’s been a while since British dressage had so much to cheer about: a bronze medal for our European championship team, qualification for the Athens Olympics in the bag and a cracking turnout from the public for this Hickstead-run championship.

“The weather, arenas, event presentation and amenities for spectators were smashing. The only drawback was the traffic. A lot of people endured dreadful jams. But this shouldn’t take the lustre off a fantastic result. Who’s to say Britain won’t become a dressage nation to be reckoned with?”

“Two horses competing in the same preliminary class at a regional championships recently were bred, owned and trained by me, and had the same rider. While my correct plodder won the class, the “better” test — in my view, anyway — was awarded a staggering 35 marks’ difference between the judges.

“My very confused rider had also considered the variously marked test to be his better performance. A newcomer to our sport — I could only explain that dressage can be complicated.”

“The hot topic at the weekend was Blenheim being forced to ballot 73 horses.

Balloting causes a lot of stress, not only for owners and riders, but also for organisers, who hate having to turn people away.

“The four-star balloting ruling, which goes on points only and has had to be deployed at Badminton and Burghley this year, is tough but fair. The two-horse rider rule is awkward for owners and causes logistical problems, especially for overseas riders. It means that some of the best horses can’t run, which is a shame for the competition.”

“Once again, it was the British Skewbald and Piebald Association (BSPA) classes that pulled in both entries and spectators [at the RIHS]. With 119 forward, split between four classes, conformation judge Marjorie Ramsay and ride judge Tim Wiggett had a mammoth task. Both started and finished with a smile and appreciated the riders’ tremendous enjoyment and enthusiasm.

“This is still an area where the dedicated one-horse owner can get to the top. For many true amateur competitors, qualifying to ride at the RIHS is a dream come true.”

“The Festival at Gatcombe is only possible thanks to more than 350 volunteers and all the sponsors who help finance it. I never cease to be amazed that so many people are prepared to give up their time to help out.

“The riders and the horses are, of course, the focus of attention, along with the owners, who are hopefully getting more recognition. However, we should all remember the army of volunteers that make this sport possible weekend after weekend in this country.”

“Some BSHCRHA judges are not happy about receiving a letter advising them to have their own personal accident insurance cover. The complaint is simply one of cost. Judges already pay an annual membership fee to be on the judges panel without having to pay a expensive insurance premium as well.

“The judges are asking why the BSHCRHA cannot take a leaf out the BSPS’s book, which offers its officials automatic personal accident cover from the minute they leave home to judge BSPS classes?”

“The BSJA’s rankings list is almost always too far out of date to be relevant to current form. If we want the wider media to cover show jumping more enthusiastically, surely it wold help to have more up-to-date rankings available?

“I appreciate that compiling the BSJA rankings list is a huge and arduous task but the earliest they appear is six weeks after the latest available results. If the rankings could reflect current form more accurately, this would be such a useful tool to help promote our sport.”

“Aside from causing discomfort, extended heat is so bad for soundness. If we are getting used tocross-country courses getting rotavated, few showing and jumping arenas are. Then again, it pays to do your homework as some venues do offer super year-round going.

“One school of play-safers will argue that ‘there’s always another day’ and withdraw as soon as the ground gets firm, but it’s a long wait for the next area final for pony clubbers, and many events do make a huge effort with the ground.”

“I’ve not noticed an information board anywhere urging us to crack on with getting an equine passport. Every horse owner in the UK is meant to apply for one by January.

“Shouldn’t DEFRA be distributing forms and information at huge events like Gatcombe, attended by tens of thousands of horseowners? My fear is that there will be a horrendous rush at the year’s end, leading to delays.

“And one wonders how DEFRA is going to enforce them.”

“Summer holidays; several balls are in the air as parents juggle their offspring’s activities.

“Do you go to this show or that Pony Club rally? When to fit in an extra lesson — and how to achieve it all without allowing ponies to occupy the child’s every waking hour? The sleepover at a friend’s and the swimming party need slots, too — not to mention the family holiday.

“Enthusiasm must be nurtured and riding remain fun.”

“Gatcombe’s 21st birthday was celebrated with an appropriately high standard of competition in the Doubleprint Festival of Eventing. Riders repaid their faith in Mark Phillips’s commitment to producing good going and more horse-friendly courses by tackling his courses positively and competitively.

“The success of the British Open could be measured by the amount of horses who started across country, which is ironic in the light of Gatcombe having lost TV coverage, because it would have made great viewing.”
