1. Dukeshill Penny Pincher

Aimee Lock’s Welsh section A Dukeshill Penny Pincher and 10-year-old Olivia Dickson took the overall supreme championship. The pair were open ridden champions en route. Nine-year-old “Spam” was bred by Jo Sheil out of Dukeshill Penny From Heaven by Oldenzijlster Action Man, a Dutch stallion known as Ham who was borrowed by Jo for a season in a stallion swap.

2. Bracklinn Beth

Fell mare Bracklinn Beth lifted the NPS Scotland/Townhead Pet n Pony M&M in-hand final championship en route to the reserve supreme spot. She was exhibited by her breeders, the Smith Family, and handled by Alistair Smith. By Auckside Freddie out of Bracklinn Tess, Beth was supreme champion at the Fell Pony Society breed show just a week prior to her debut at Scone Palace.

3. Mullachbuie MacLaren

Jane McNaught’s lightly-shown dun gelding Mullachbuie MacLaren (Eric) lifted the NPS Scotland/Kilmannan Stud M&M novice ridden championship title. The six-year-old is a son of Glenwestcastle Loch Rannoch and Megaidh of Mullachbuie, and he was bred by Catriona Lackie.

4. Edenagor Ned

Chloe Macdonald’s six-year-old middleweight hunter Edenagor Ned, ridden by James Munro, came out on top in the hunter championship ahead of his teammate, novice victor Jamie’s Future, steered by Russell Skelton, also photographed. Both horses have a Royal Highland hunter championship to their names, the former under saddle and the latter in-hand. They are also both HOYS-bound in October.

5. Mardoug’s Highland Park

Yvonne Pringle riding her own Mardoug’s Highland Park, an eight-year-old gelding by Tillside Topsman out of Pacemuir Marion Morrison, trumped 18 others to claim the Scone Castle ridden Clydesdale final.

6. Rookery Bertie

Aberdeen-based rider Lucy Whiteford, 11, aboard her scopey Welsh Section A Rookery Bertie claimed the 122cm NPS Scotland/Kingfisher Building Products M&M working hunter pony class – and the section championship. Bertie, a son of Uphill James Fox son is home-produced and he provided Lucy with her first-ever HOYS ticket at the Royal Highland Show.

7. Dewley Essence

Chris Grant’s home-bred three-year-old filly Dewley Essence – kept on a conservation grazing site – ran through her card to claim the competitive in-hand Highland pony championship. The daughter of Dewley Esmerelda is a third generation home-bred and is by Chris’ multi-Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) finalist and dual Royal Highland Show champion Dunedin Iolare.

8. Bosley Minns George

Kati Rhodes and Paula Roskell’s impressive 18.1hh nine-year-old Shire stallion Bosley Minns George impressed to take the ridden HOYS heavy horse qualifier. This will be the Acle Charmer son’s first visit to HOYS.

‘Our hearts have grown one horse bigger’ as equine police recruit chooses her own name

The Lancashire Police mounted section says its “hearts have grown one horse bigger”, thanks to its latest equine recruit – who has chosen her own police name.

A six-year-old Clydesdale formerly known as Blossom has been undergoing her training with the branch, and was officially named on 4 April. Many of the branch’s horses are named after places in Lancashire, so in keeping with this, the 16.3hh mare was offered the choice of three buckets of feed. These were labelled Whalley, Langho and Cottam and she chose Cottam.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson told H&H PH Cottam, who came from a home in Yorkshire where she enjoyed hacking, is very friendly and “great to have around”.

“She is progressing well through the early stages of her police training,” she added.

PH Cottam will continue her training, visiting different places in the county, “taking in all the sights and learning the ropes from our other esteemed equines”.

“Our hearts have grown one horse bigger,” the police spokesperson said.

“As she continues her training at our mounted division, our newest recruit received her ‘police name’ yesterday and as she’s described as ‘a mare who knows what she wants’, it was only right that we let her choose it herself.”

There are 16 horses in the Lancashire Police mounted branch; previously, the public has chosen some of their official names.

Know your Shire from your Suffolk from your Percheron: a cheat’s guide to the ridden heavy horse showing classes

Anyone who has watched ridden heavy horses in the show ring will know that they are a treat for spectators. Whoever imagined such giants could be as balanced and light-footed as a hack?

Horses aimed at the Heavy Horse of the Year HOYS qualifiers must be registered with the British Studbooks of the Shire, Clydesdale, Suffolk or British Percheron Society. But as you take a moment to enjoy the spectacle, do you really know your Shire from your Clydesdale, or which is the Suffolk and which is the Percheron?

Let us shed some light on each of them so you’re up to speed when you find yourself cheating your way through a chat at the ringside…

The Shire Horse

How to spot a Shire

Shires come in black, brown, bay or grey, though there are actually very, very few greys. The breed standards state that you won’t find large splashes of white on the body of a “good stallion” and they must not be roan or chestnut. It is, however, acceptable for geldings or mares to be roan. The Shires of yesteryear had abundant feather but today’s Shire has straighter, silkier and finer feather.

On average, Shires are between 17 and 18hh, but geldings and mares may be a teeny bit smaller. The Shire and Clydesdale are pretty similar in build, but the Shire is generally slightly taller with horses sometimes reaching over 20hh. Also, the hindquarters might be a little different, with those of a Shire being “long and sweeping” and thighs should be well muscled. In motion, a Shire should be a powerful, straight over, using hocks and knees, with the former close together.

Clues from turnout

An in-hand Shire is a feast for the eyes, with tail ribbons and standing wire flights adding a burst of colour to an already impressive sight. Ridden Shires don’t wear standing flights for safety reasons. Instead, you’ll find a braid in their manes and a ribbon in tails.

How to cheat your way through a ringside chat on the Shire

Originally known as the English Cart Horse, the breed’s name changed to the Shire in 1878. Though they were immensely popular pre mechanisation, industrialisation and the world wars, the Shire’s numbers declined enormously until there were just 16 foals registered in the 1958 stud book, according to the Shire Horse Society. So, just like the other native breeds eligible for competition, the Shire is on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s equine watchlist, and is categorised as “at risk”.

Impress your friends with: Did you know, the last three winners of the ridden heavy horse class at HOYS have been Shires? The Shire has a brilliant track record in the ridden heavy horse of the year championship, with Moorfield Nancy being the most recent winner last season – 2024 – under Alice Pimbley.

The Clydesdale

How to spot a Clydesdale

The Clydesdale is, on average, a smidge smaller than the Shire, at a not-so-whopping 17 to 18hh. Some mares will measure slightly smaller, and some geldings and stallions slightly taller. Though a Clydesdale should be strong with good depth, spring of rib and rounded quarters – like any good draught horse – the Clydesdale tends not to be as stocky as the Suffolk or Percheron.

According to the breed society’s criteria, a Clydesdale’s legs should be “set close together” and its hind legs should have a “lengthy” distance between hocks and pasterns “with an absence of a second thigh above the hock”. This gives way to the unique and free action of the Clydesdale.

Like the Shire, bay and brown and roan are most common, but you’ll occasionally happen across a black and chestnut, too. White markings tend to travel further up the legs than on a Shire, and it’s not uncommon to see white legs blend into a roan fleck on the body. A Clydesdale without a blaze is a rare sight.

Clydesdales will usually don a ribbon in their tails, and stallions and geldings wear braided manes, but female Clydesdales traditionally don’t.

How to cheat your way through a ringside chat on the Clydesdale

The Clydesdale is Scotland’s only native horse, and it’s always a pleasure to catch the Royal Highland’s bountiful ridden Clydesdale class. It originates in Lanarkshire, Clydesdale being the old name for the district, and dates back to the mid 18th Century when Flemish stallions were crossed with Lanarkshire’s native horses. During the 1970s the breed was considered “vulnerable” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, but has since increased in numbers to the “at risk” category.

Impress your friends with: Did you know, the Clydesdale also has a really good track record in the Ridden Heavy Horse of the Year championship at HOYS? In fact, the inaugural championship was won by Scottish duo, Virginia Osborne and Kinclune Danny Boy in 2016. A second Scottish duo, Kirsty Aird and Glenside Matthew’s Flower Of Scotland won in 2021.

The Suffolk horse

How to spot a Suffolk Horse

Suffolks are easy to spot. The Suffolk is for fans of fiery red hair, with liver, dark, red, light or bright chesnuts being the only colours allowed. No, that’s not a typo; when referring to the Suffolk horse, the colour chestnut is always spelled chesnut.

“Plain” – for want of a better word to describe this brilliant colour – chesnut is preferred, but according to breed standards, a certain amount of white is acceptable on the face, as is a “scattering” of white or silver hairs on the body. White to the fetlock is allowed, but considered a fault and is not acceptable in stud stallions.

Today’s Suffolk is a little taller than the 15.2hh of the original Suffolk, Crisp’s Horse. According to their breed society standards, a mature Suffolk will be between 15¾ and 17hh. Suffolks are squarer and chunkier in the body than Shires and Clydesdales, with a huge shoulder and proportionally short legs, so they may not have the extravagant knee and hock action of the other three breeds.

The Suffolk is shown with a ribbon in a plaited tail. Like the Shire, it wears standing wire flights in hand, but will be found shown with a single plait down the mane and a ribbon at the wither in ridden classes.

How to cheat your way through a chat on the Suffolk horse

According to the RBST, the Suffolk horse is the most endangered of our draught breeds, being the only one in the “priority” category. The Suffolk’s numbers were decimated post WWI by the mechanisation of agriculture, until just nine Suffolks were registered in 1966. Thankfully, they have regained popularity.

Impress your friends with: Did you know that so far, a Suffolk hasn’t won the Ridden Heavy Horse of the Year championship? Richard Telford came a close second in 2016 with Eyke Diamond.

The Percheron horse

How to spot a Percheron

Just like the Suffolk, a good Percheron won’t have much feather. But you won’t find them in “chesnut”. Instead, a Percheron horse is grey or black, with a minimum of white, although the society recognises that colour will tend to lighten in older horses.

Like its chestnut rival, the Percheron is also squarer in appearance than the Shire or Clydesdale. Mares should be a minimum of 16.1hh, and stallions or geldings a smidge bigger, being at least 16.2hh.

Clues from turnout

Rely on colour, because again, manes should be braided irrespective of sex, and tails should be plaited with a ribbon, so not much to go on from turnout!

How to cheat your way through a ringside chat on the Percheron

Though we’re not entirely sure how long the Percheron horse has been on British soil, we know it’s been around a long time, with the first one appearing as far back as William the Conqueror’s invasion of England.

According to the British Percheron Horse Society, it’s also believed that thousands of Percheron-esque horses were imported to Britain from North America during the latter half of the 19th Century for omnibuses and other light draught work in big towns. Nowadays, you may have seen Percherons being ridden by police, including at the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

Impress your friends with: Although there aren’t as many Percherons competing in the ridden classes as there are Clydesdales and Shires, they are successful. In 2017 fans saw a Percheron win at HOYS – Hales Hector was ridden to victory by Household Cavalry Corporal of the Horse, Jamie Bradbury.

‘She’s a miracle mare’: history-making 15-year-old rider heads to HOYS on home-bred Clydesdale

A home-bred Clydesdale is bound for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) with a 15-year-old rider who becomes the youngest competitor to ever qualify for the ridden heavy horse of the year final. Colleen and Barry Marshall’s Burgess Outon Miracle, a six-year-old mare by Eskechraggan Ernest, and their daughter Kaitlyn, just 14 at the time, landed their debut HOYS ticket at Fife Show.

Miracle was the first foal the family bred and while she is relatively new to ridden showing, she tallied some impressive results in-hand. As a four-year-old, she won the prestigious Cawdor Cup at the Royal Highland Show and was also champion of her age category at the World Clydesdale Show in Aberdeenshire later in the season. In 2023, she bred a filly foal.

“Last year, Kaitlyn had outgrown her 14.2hh pony and we were looking for something for her to ride, so we broke Miracle in for a bit of fun,” explains Colleen. “Kaitlyn backed her herself and they’ve gone from strength to strength as a partnership ever since.”

Miracle contested her first ridden show at Kilmacolm at the beginning of the 2024 season, where she won her class and qualified for Blair Horse Trials. As she was so impeccably behaved, her next outing was Fife.

“It was a bigger show and a step up as the class was a HOYS qualifier against the big boys,” Colleen continues. “We were absolutely gobsmacked to be placed first and qualify. It was an absolutely unbelievable and phenomenal feeling as a parent; I was so proud of them both. We never thought this would be us. Next stop was the Royal Highland show where they finished reserve champion out of 16 horses.”

The duo most recently headed to the Blair final where they were crowned ridden Clydesdale champions on less than ideal going owing to wet weather.

“We’re now getting ready for HOYS,” Colleen said. “All we can ask for is to get in and out of the ring safely, and to get a nice picture! As a family we are so proud of Kaitlyn; to have achieved all this in such a short time and at such a young age is an inspiration.”

Showing isn’t the only sphere Miracle excels in, as Colleen explains: “Miracle also attends Pony Club, has done some dressage and is more than happy to have my 10-year-old daughter and 13-year-old old son, who is a complete beginner, ride her at home.

“I will forever be in debt to this horse; she really is a miracle mare, our true horse of a lifetime. We don’t have any fancy facilities or an arena, so we’re getting as much riding in as possible on the grass ahead of HOYS.”

Meet City of London’s newest police horse – complete with fabulous feather

Meet Andy, aka Police Horse Thomson, the newest official member of the City of London Police mounted branch, who loves a scratch – and boasts some fabulous feather.

The 14-year-old Clydesdale, known as Andy to his friends, has completed his training so has been officially renamed in a special ceremony.

A spokesperson for the police told H&H PH Thomson was at an equestrian centre in Penrith that closed, after which he was turned away. He arrived at the mounted branch last February and has since undergone a full training programme including troop drill and practice in “challenging environments”.

“Andy has made great progress, is now in the peak of health and has just completed his training and is a fully fledged police horse,” the spokesperson said.

“He is a very gentle horse who adores a scratch and will pull some wonderful expressions to signify when you have got just the right spot.”

The spokesperson added that PH Thomson is unique in police horses as he has retained his feather – and that this has already won him many fans.

“They look majestic but require much maintenance and pampering,” she said. “They have been retained due to his previous life and common conditions associated with Clydesdales.

“The feathers are very popular with the public and have earned him a huge following on our mounted branch X account, @Cityhorses, with #followthefeathers.”

Andy has been officially named after former chair and current deputy of the City of London Police Authority board James Thomson; other members of the branch have been named after historically significant city sites or public figures.

Sergeant Joanna Brown of the City of London Police mounted branch said: “This is a special occasion for the mounted branch, it celebrates the hard work and determination in training the horses and the commitment from the trainers and the wider team.

“We are naming this horse PH Thomson in recognition of James Thomson, who has been a vocal supporter of our department. His interest in raising our profile and sharing what police horse bring to the Square Mile has been vitally important.”

Mr Thomson said he was “honoured and humbled” to have Andy named after him.

“The City of London Police mounted unit plays an important role in keeping the Square Mile one of the safest business districts in the world,” he said.

“I am delighted that PH Thomson will be joining the team and I look forward to seeing them out on patrol.”

Online show launched in memory of much-loved Clydesdale – with TV celebrity judge

A late Clydesdale who became an ambassador for grass sickness research and gained international fans is being remembered with an online charity show raising money to help fight the disease.

Aberdeenshire-based Lorraine Saunders’ Clydesdale gelding Mitchelhill Scott (Scottie) became unwell in January 2016, and after a referral to an equine hospital he was eventually diagnosed with grass sickness. When Scottie, who was 18 and had been with Lorraine since he was four, did not show signs of improvement it was suggested that he should be put down.

“It took some time to agree that it was grass sickness, it was January, and he was older, so he didn’t fit with the usual risk factors,” Lorraine told H&H.

“I remember arriving at the hospital to say goodbye, and Scottie heard me and whinnied. The vets said that was the most they’d heard from him. After not eating anything since he first became unwell, he then took a mint, and I said ‘We’re not putting him to sleep’.”

Scottie later returned home, and with help and advice from vets and the Equine Grass Sickness Fund (EGSF), he was nursed back to health.

“It took about eight weeks before he could swallow properly, and he used to have six tiny soupy feeds a day, but things got better,” said Lorraine.

“There were always little signs afterwards, for example his poos were never as big as they used to be, and his energy levels were never quite the same, but I tried to retire him three times and he was having none of it. From there on I used to just let him choose the pace, sometimes we’d tootle along on a hack, and other times he’d see an open gate to the field and we’d have a blast.”

Over the years Scottie remained healthy, and Lorraine stayed in touch with the EGSF team, attending grass sickness conferences, fundraising for the charity, and helping raise awareness of the disease.

In 2022 Scottie led the EGSF grass sickness survivors’ parade at the Royal Highland Show, and later that year he attended the World Clydesdale Show as an ambassador to raise awareness about the disease. It was the first time in history the show had been held in the UK, and it was here Scottie gained international fans – and formed a friendship with British Horse Society president Martin Clunes.

“At the Royal Highland and the World Clydesdale Show we had so many people come up to meet Scottie and ask about grass sickness. There’s still so many people that haven’t heard of it or think it’s just a northeast Scotland problem, but we’re seeing more cases pop up in places it hasn’t been before,” said Lorraine.

“When Martin met Scottie it was brilliant and he took such an interest in him and in learning about grass sickness. He returned a few more times to see Scottie and brought his wife Phillipa to meet him.”

Last April, two months before his 24th birthday, Scottie became unwell and was attended to by a vet, but he died suddenly. Although it was not possible to confirm the cause, it was suspected that there could have been links to his having had grass sickness.

“I had been checking on him every 20 minutes through the night had popped inside, then I heard a loud noise and he was gone. The one thing that sticks in my head is that I wasn’t there in that very moment, but people have said he probably waited until I was gone because he’d have known how upset I would have been,” said Lorraine.

Lorraine is running an online show in memory of Scottie and raising money for EGSF. The Mitchelhill Scott show has a range of classes, including heavy horse, veterans, and breed-specific sections, novelty classes and a grass sickness survivor class.

The show is open to all and will be judged via photographs. Entries close on 30 June, and the results will be announced no later than 7 July.

“We have some brilliant judges from as far as the USA and Australia, and Martin Clunes has agreed to judge the heavy horses and the overall championship,” said Lorraine.

“We have managed to get sponsors for all the classes who have paid for the rosettes, which means every single penny will go to EGSF. The more entries we can get the better.”

Lorraine added that it means a lot to raise money and support for EGSF, and to host the show in memory of Scottie.

“The people at EGSF have become friends, even though it was eight years ago that Scottie had grass sickness. It is such an awful disease and nothing is too much trouble for them, they give so much support to people – and we all want the same goal,” she said.

“Whether we will find a cure for grass sickness or not I don’t know, but we need to keep plugging away. Scottie was perfect, he was the kindest person, a huge gentle boy, and even though he’s not here anymore I’m trying to do our bit and give something back in his memory.”

Starving Clydesdale horse now happy in his new home after being rescued

A Clydesdale horse, described as a “giant skeleton” and found “starving to death”, has made a full recovery – and been rehomed back to his native country.

World Horse Welfare rescued 15-year-old gelding Seamus when he was discovered in a hillside field with no grass. A spokesman for the charity said he was “so starved that it was touch and go as to whether he would survive”.

Field officer Seema Ritson attended and said when she saw Seamus she was “shocked to see a giant skeleton”, with bare patches of skin.

“I could see he’d had to crane his neck through the fence to reach any morsel of forage, but this was simply not enough to sustain him,” she said.

Seamus was taken to World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm in Lancashire to be nursed back to health.

“Over the course of eight months Seamus slowly recovered and his placid temperament, which persisted despite his previous neglect, meant that he was quickly rehomed when ready,” said the charity’s spokesman.

Seamus found a new home in Scotland.

“Although we are experienced with horses, caring for a Clydesdale has been a learning curve as big as him,” said his rehomer Nikky.

“Transport was a bit tricky due to his size, but we found an experienced transporter of Clydesdales to bring him home. We cannot thank World Horse Welfare enough for giving him a chance of life and entrusting us with his follow-on care.”

Seamus is the face of World Horse Welfare’s latest fundraising appeal.

“Previous donations helped make this rescue possible – so thank you from the bottom of my heart,” said Miss Ritson.

“It’s only thanks to donations that we are able to do this, and we desperately need to be there for so many more horses like Seamus. Any amount can be truly life-changing.”

The film opens with a wintry scene, then cutting from a bar to a snow-covered field, where a Clydsesdale nudges a Budweiser delivery driver who has the idea to deliver beer the traditional way.

The driver and his colleague, the latter played by Fred Dana, a real-life Budsweiser wholesaler of more than 34 years, load up the cart and the team of horses head out into the snow.

When the weather starts to close in, the bar’s yellow Labrador appears and escorts the horses the rest of the way.

“Budweiser has been synonymous with the Super Bowl for decades and the broadcast continues to be a very special moment for our brand and a core pillar of our advertising strategy,” said Kristina Punwani, head of marketing at Budweiser USA.

“This year, we’re thrilled to bring our fans a piece of the traditional Super Bowl entertainment that they know and love from Budweiser: the iconic Clydesdales.

“We knew there was no better way to show Budweiser’s continued commitment to delivering for its fans than with our biggest celebrities.”

It is the Clydesdale’s 46th Super Bowl appearance and this year, the horses will be bringing beer to bars in the city in Las Vegas, where Super Bowl LVIII takes place on 11 February.

‘It’s magical – and important’: World Clydesdale Show held in Scotland for the first time in history

The World Clydesdale Show was held in Scotland — and in Europe – for the first time in its history.

The four-day show took place at P&J Arena in Aberdeen from 20-23 October 2022.

“It’s incredibly magical to be holding this in Scotland – and it’s also really important,” said World Clydesdale Show chief executive Ailsa Clark. “We want to keep our breed going, and to have the show brought to the home of the Clydesdale has been a huge achievement. It would not have been possible without the support of all of the committee and sponsors. We hope the show could return to Scotland again in 2027.”

The overall supreme world champion was crowned on the final day of competition, and the title went to Jim Greenhill’s two-year-old Tulloes Emily, handled by Jim’s daughter Louise. Judges Alistair Christie and Randy Robertson agreed the home-bred filly by Arradoul Balvenie out of Tulloes Lady Jane – who was crowned overall female champion earlier in the day – was the cream of the crop.

“She’s exactly what you want to see in the breed. She fills the eye from nose to tail, she’s correct, has long, silky hair, beautiful action and just oozes breed character,” said Alistair.

The overall female reserve spot went to long-term breeder Ronnie Black’s nine-year-old Collessie Jennifer, shown by Ronnie’s son Peter.

Isla Miller and her father Brian Bisset’s 10-year-old Stobilee Zac lifted the supreme ridden championship title ahead of six other champions, after a fantastic week where Isla and Zac won the open ridden class and took the ridden championship. The former Horse of the Year Show reserve heavy horse champion also won the dressage under Katie Common.

“He loves being in the ring; he’s a showman. He likes people looking at him,” said Isla. “I didn’t come here with any expectations, I thought we’ll go and have a nice time and now here we are, supreme ridden. I’m over the moon, I couldn’t ask for any more.”

The stallion title went to Willow Way Swiper, who was also crowned the best rest-of-the-world-bred horse for Ron Brewster, John Anderson and Helen Carr. Paul and Matthew Bedford’s junior colt champion Thorpe Hill Quick Flash was named overall stallion reserve.

Father and son Paul and Matthew Bedford also took home the champion gelding honours and best European-bred horse, with Thorpe Hill Roy, by Colessie Proclaimer. The Tennant family’s West Forth Solo, by Muirton Sabre, was reserve champion gelding.

Standing tall: the five breeds featuring the world’s biggest horses

Any breed of horse that frequently measures over 18hh is in the running for fielding the biggest horses in the world. Some of the taller individuals of these heavy horse breeds can measure over 20hh. There is some debate over the largest horse ever recorded, as it depends whether the records refer to height or weight. The tallest horses on record are Shire horse Sampson, foaled in Bedfordshire in 1846, who measured 21.2½hh; while over the pond Belgian Draft gelding Big Jake was measured at just shy of 20.3hh in Wisconsin, a Guinness World Record in 2010.

Shire horse

Renowned for its height and strength, Shires have held various records for largest and tallest horse. They are a fantastic draft horse, and were traditionally used for farm work, pulling brewers’ drays and towing barges. The breed, which originated in Britain, is still used for forestry and as draft horses for a some traditional breweries as well as a leisure horse for riding.

Tallest Shire: the 19th-century giant Sampson, 21.2½hh, who was renamed Mammoth as a four-year-old.

Clydesdale

Typically measures at least 17hh, but is lighter than the other large breeds due to its slighter frame. The Clydesdale is known for its height and strength, but it is also elegant, with a high-stepping showy action. Although the breed originated in Scotland, they are famous in America due to featuring in the Budweiser commercials.

Tallest Clydesdale: Digger, a 19.2hh, who was rescued as a foal and trained as a drum horse for royal parades.

Belgian Draft

Holds one of the records for the world’s largest horse, although more typically they are a maximum of 17hh. The Belgian draft is particularly known for its capacity to pull great weights and have won championships in this sphere. Belgian draft horses were exported throughout Europe and to the US, where it is now known as the American Brabant and is typically slightly more compact than the European version. They can be ridden, but are particularly popular in forestry and farm work, and even pulling sledges.

Percheron

Perhaps a surprising inclusion in this list as this French-bred draft horse can be as small as 15.2hh. However, most are much taller and have at times held biggest-horse records. They are also among the strongest in terms of their pulling power. They were traditionally used for transport – whether artillery and soldiers during wars, or stagecoaches during peacetime – as well as for agricultural work. Nowadays, they are used for conservation and forestry work, and also as a riding and driving horse.

Tallest Percheron: Dr Le Gear was recorded in 1915 as the world’s biggest horse, standing 21hh and weighing 2,995lb (1,359kg).

Suffolk or Suffolk Punch

Always chesnut (and spelt without the T), Suffolk Punches are another of Britain’s established heavy-horse breeds and originated in the East Anglian county of Suffolk. Traditionally used for farm work as well as transporting artillery in the wars, they are nowadays used for riding as well as driving. They are a little more compact than the Clydesdale and Shire, standing typically at 17hh max, although there are instances of individuals exceeding 17hh, and they are particularly powerfully built. They might not be the very tallest, but they are said to be the oldest heavy horse breed in Britain, dating back to the 16th century.

‘I’m sure Mum was watching over us’: amateur’s home-bred Clydesdale collects his first HOYS ticket

A dream win in the show ring at Blair International Horse Trials means Clydesdale Coulbank Hamish, his breeder and his rider will all be making their debuts at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) next month.

Sharon Hepburn’s home-bred 14-year-old, who was contending only his second ridden heavy horse qualifier, collected his HOYS ticket at the prestigious Scottish event with Sharon’s friend, Marion Maclennan, in the saddle.

Sharon is an Inverness-based amateur and Hamish was co-bred by Sharon and her late mother, Aileen Campbell, who passed away in 2020.

“He qualified for HOYS almost two years to the day of Mum’s passing,” said Sharon. “This made the moment very poignant. My mother was always our biggest supporter, and she was always at the ringside cheering us on. I’m sure she was watching over us with pride when he qualified.

“When she died, I didn’t think I wanted to carry on showing, but now I’m so glad I did.”

Sharon competed Hamish’s dam, Westerton Rosie, at Blair some 18 years ago. Remarkably, Hamish is Sharon’s only foal. He was bred to contend the ridden circuit, though Sharon never believed he’d be a HOYS finalist.

“To qualify at a Scottish show was also a dream come true,” continued Sharon. “Hamish is a very versatile horse and he absolutely adores being out and about.

“I’ve had lots of fun with him over the years, showing him in ridden Clydesdale classes, taking him to the beach, taking him on pleasure rides and going on riding holidays. He also did a 20-mile charity ride in memory of Mum in 2021. He does everything that is asked of him with a smile on his face.”

Sharon has decided that the World Clydesdale Show held in Aberdeen (20-23 October) will be Hamish’s final show.

“Never in a million years did I think we would be going to HOYS and it’s lovely that Hamish will be retiring in style,” she continued. “I am lucky enough to have a fantastic team of friends who will be coming down to HOYS to help and support us.

“HOYS prep is going well so far; everything is going to plan and I’m just keeping Hamish fit. We’ll be breaking the journey [across multiple days] as we’re travelling down from Inverness.”

The Clydesdale horse is among the tallest equines in the world. Known for its height and strength but also a certain elegance, the Clydesdale is a heavy horse with style that is renowned the world over, thanks to its fame in the Budweiser commercials. Yet the breed is at risk of extinction.

They vie with the Shire horse and Belgian Draft in terms of the title, “world’s biggest horse”. Although they are tall (typically at least 17hh), they are lighter than these other large breeds due to their slighter frame.

As with any horse, there is no ballpark figure on how much a Clydesdale costs. Prices are dependent on age, pedigree, training, temperament, conformation, ability and so on.

Potted history

This Scottish breed takes its name from the area around the River Clyde in Lanarkshire.

During the 18th century, the Duke of Hamilton imported six black coaching stallions from Flanders to improve local draught stock. John Paterson of Lochlyloch brought a Flemish stallion from England and these sires were used on local Scottish mares, the progeny of which was to evolve into the Clydesdale.

These horses were said to be of better type than the Flanders horses and the native horses they were crossed with, and the breed soon gained a reputation as one of the best agricultural and haulage animals. Horse fairs at Lanark became a popular place to purchase horses and a strong export industry in Clydesdales soon developed.

Different types started to evolve as the breed spread throughout the British Isles. The Clydesdale Horse Society was formed in 1877 and its first studbook, published in 1878, mentions such types, including the Galloway, Kintyre and Banffshire. The foundation sire is believed to be Glancer 335 – also called Thompson’s Black Horse – with two notable sires of the 19th century being Prince of Wales 673 and Darnley 222.

During the height of its popularity, the Clydesdale numbered around 140,000 animals in Scotland alone. However, with the introduction of mechanisation in agriculture and haulage, the Clydesdale’s primary use was lost and numbers dramatically declined. By the 1970s, the breed was designated “at risk” by the Rare Breeds’ Survival Trust and found itself at an all time low. They are still deemed at risk in 2022.

The main purpose of the Clydesdale today is breeding, showing, carriage-driving and parades. The Clydesdale Horse Society has taken measures to increase the breed’s popularity, especially with young people. National classes have been developed to ensure that all ages of enthusiast are involved in the continuation of the Clydesdale.

As well as their use in showing and eco-friendly agriculture, Clydesdales compete in general riding club activities. Although they are renowned for their pulling power, they also give a comfortable ride – being quite narrow for a heavy draft breed – and typically have an easy-going and willing temperament. They have proved popular with the Household Cavalry as drum horses.

And if you think a heavy draft horse is out of place on the racetrack, take a look at Exeter’s annual Clydesdale race for charity, in which top jockeys take part. This hugely popular race has been running since 2013.

Famous Clydesdale horses

The “Budweiser Clydesdales” are a group of Clydesdale horses based in Missouri, US, used in advertisements for the brewing company Anheuser-Busch. The tradition dates back to 1933 when Anheuser-Busch’s sons surprised him with six Clydesdale horses and a beer wagon to celebrate the end of Prohibition, and the breed has since become a marketing tool. They are particularly associated with commercials during Super Bowl, having appeared in most ads since the 1980s (they took a break during Covid). The Clydesdale breed is said to be “a symbol of America – a symbol of hope, of strength, of resilience”, according to Budweiser’s marketing president.

Digger: at around 19.2hh, Digger was one of the world’s tallest horses. He was rescued by World Horse Welfare as an orphan foal, and was put in training as drum horse for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, although ended up as the face of World Horse Welfare’s Adopt a Horse scheme, living at their Aberdeenshire centre, Belwade Farm.

The actor Martin Clunes has a soft spot for heavy horses. His first two horses, Ronnie and Bruce, were Clydesdales and he used them to travel by horse and cart. This pair starred in Martin’s 2013 documentary Heavy Horsepower.

Breed societies find ‘proactive’ solutions to overcome Brexit challenges

BREED societies are taking positive steps to ensure the ongoing ability to register rare-breed and native horses and ponies abroad following Brexit.

After Britain left the EU, foreign studbooks had to apply to Defra for an extension of breeding territory so horses and ponies in the UK could still be registered with them. The move has affected many foreign sport-horse studbooks that were not granted permission (news, 24 February), but also has an impact on UK breed societies, which have to apply to EU countries for the same extension of breeding territory.

The Clydesdale Horse Society and the Welsh Cob and Pony Society are among those taking steps to ensure foreign breeders can continue to register foals with their studbooks. The Clydesdale Horse Society, which registers around 200 foals a year, 25 of these in EU countries, has created daughter studbooks in Germany and Ireland. The German studbook will cater for breeders in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and the Irish for Denmark – but other EU countries can apply for extension of breeding territory.

Clydesdale Horse Society secretary Ian Roy told H&H the creation of the daughter studbooks was a “positive and proactive solution”.

“We found colleagues in Germany and Ireland who were willing to take us on and run with us,” he said. “It’s taken almost a year to get them up and running, but we’re now approaching each EU country seeking an extension of the Irish studbook into these countries and we’re finding there’s a lot of cooperation.”

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society already had daughter studbooks in EU countries, and around the world, but ahead of Brexit the organisation worked with the Welsh Government to come up with a solution to still allow EU breeders to register on the UK studbook, as this is still favoured among many EU breeders.

“We wanted to work around this because we did not want to lose the gene pool and the work of those overseas breeders who have for many generations worked hard to breed high-quality stock,” said a spokesman for the society.

“We have now split the document – you have the passport as an identification document with the microchip, and a separate breeding registration document. Although we cannot issue a passport to EU-bred ponies because of the legislation, overseas breeders can scan their passport from their country of origin and email it to us with the pedigree. If it complies with our rules and regulations, we can register them on our overseas register and they go into our studbook alongside UK-bred animals, so this secures the pedigree and bloodlines.”

Rare Breed Survival Trust chief executive Christopher Price told H&H Brexit had “clearly created challenges” for equine breed societies as it has in many other sectors including livestock, but said “although it is cumbersome, expensive and time consuming, there is a way round it through the creation of daughter studbooks”.

Heartbreak as Clydesdale who survived shooting 13 years ago is put down

Redwings has said “a tearful goodbye” to blind Clydesdale horse Boo, who has been put down aged 24.

Boo, who had lost an eye to cancer, joined the charity in 2009 after he was shot in his remaining eye by intruders at point-blank range with an air rifle, leaving the gelding completely blind.

“Having been advised that it would be kindest to put him to sleep, his distraught owner rang Redwings to see if the charity could offer Boo a last-minute reprieve and provide him with the specialist care he would need for the rest of his life,” said a spokesman for the charity.

“Thanks to the help of his field companion and ‘seeing eye’ horse Flynn, Boo was able to confidently explore his paddock and would even gallop to the fenceline when he heard his name – an impressive feat for a heavy horse who couldn’t see!”

The spokesman said Boo’s “incredibly friendly nature” and “love of a scratch and cuddle” meant he was very popular with supporters and he would often feature on Redwings Christmas cards and gifts. In 2020 Boo’s story was told in an animation narrated by Stephen Fry which helped raise thousands of pounds in support of the charity’s work.

Boo was put down just before Christmas when it was no longer possible to manage his lameness issues and the arthritis in his hind legs.

“The heartbreaking decision meant he would not face the debilitating discomfort his condition would have inevitably caused and he was put to sleep surrounded by the vet team and other members of Redwings staff who had lovingly cared for him for over a decade,” said the spokesman.

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress said the charity is “incredibly sad” to have said goodbye to Boo.

“For me, he summed up just what Redwings is about; providing lifelong specialist care to horses who otherwise would have nowhere else to turn, and through our heartache we take comfort that we were able to give him so many happy years,” she said.

“His story of courage inspired many and he was always so popular with visitors at our open days – and, of course, he lapped up every minute of attention, which was wonderful to see, especially for a horse that had survived such a terrible act of cruelty.”

Ms Cutress said to see Boo’s paddock empty feels “very strange”.

“Boo would regularly be found hanging his head over the fence in the mornings waiting to greet everyone as they arrived for work. When our vets had the unenviable job of breaking the news that we were going to lose him, there was a queue of staff outside the horse hospital as everyone wanted to give him a final cuddle,” she said.

“The sanctuary will simply not be the same without him.”

The spokesman added that Boo’s field companion Flynn is “doing well” and has been introduced to a new friend. In time, the pair will join a new herd together.

‘This makes everything worthwhile’: 18.2hh Clydesdale wins freestyle at Area Festival

A young 18.2hh Clydesdale horse who has been competing in dressage for less than a year came seventh at the British Dressage summer regionals — and won his class at the Area Festivals.

H&H reported in June that Jessica Martin-Legg and Marie Jenkins’ seven-year-old Springside Shiver Me Timber had won their first BD classes, but they have since excelled even more.

Timber finished seventh in the prelim gold at the summer regionals at Port Royal on 25 July, following this up with 11th place in the novice silver class at Sheepgate Equestrian on 11 August, and a win in the novice silver freestyle.

“I was really pleased with him; it was a little bit unexpected!” Jessica told H&H.

“He went a bit green on me at the regionals; he’d never been to Port Royal, and we didn’t like the flower pots, didn’t want to leave the warm up and we were spooky; we had a big spook near the beginning, but he got just under 69%.”

At Sheepgate, things did not go entirely to plan either, Jessica added.

“He kicked out in the medium canter and got four for that, so he made it a bit close for comfort with second place!” she said.

“I’d wanted to come in the top 10 in the normal novice class and we were just outside. He was good, but I’d said all along we had a chance in the freestyle if everything went ok, as that suits him; we can [tailor] the test to his strengths.”

Timber and his Pirates of the Caribbean theme music, shown at a previous competition, proved unbeatable in the novice freestyle, and the pair have qualified for the Area Festival finals in October.

“I was so chuffed with him, and it was really nice because some of my family came too; it was so special,” Jessica said. “I was a bit naughty and told his owner we’d come second to start with, but she’s always chuffed with him anyway as she never thought he’d do anything like this.”

Jessica now plans to make some trips to Arena UK before the championships, to try to avoid any spookiness, adding: “I don’t have much say when a horse that size spooks!”

The plan is then to try to qualify Timber for preliminary gold and novice silver for the next regionals, and maybe move him up to elementary at the end of this year.

“This makes it all worthwhile, all the time you spend on them, and my own horse has been out injured for three years so it’s nice to be out competing, especially doing well!” Jessica said. “He’s amazing.”

Delight as heavy horse centre welcomes rare black Clydesdale filly

A centre that promotes the survival of the UK’s heavy horse breeds is celebrating the birth of its first black Clydesdale filly after 13 years of trying.

Mare Bridget gave birth to Violet, by Tillside Topsman (Teddy), at Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre, Northumberland, last month.

Black is a rare colouring among Clydesdale horses, which are more typically bay or roan.

Although the centre has had several black colts, it has never before had a filly to add to its breeding programme.

“Other people have had black fillies from Teddy but we’ve always got the colts,” the centre’s owner Vivienne Cockburn told H&H.

“This one popped out and we thought ‘another black colt’, but when we realised it was a filly, we were jumping up and down. We were absolutely thrilled.”

Vivienne explained that the Clydesdale originated from a cross between Scottish mares and the typically black Flanders (Flemish draught), so it was originally quite a common colour for the breed, but bays and roans were later selected as a preference, making black Clydesdales increasingly rare.

“They weren’t particularly sought-after or wanted but nowadays people are starting to look for them,” she said.

Teddy, who is 11, has already sired “an awful lot” of foals and was also collected from by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) in 2019 to add his genes to the national gene bank.

Hay Farm was established in 2013 and is the only heavy horse centre in the UK backed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust as a conservation centre. It was set up by the Cockburn family in response to public interest in their heavy horses, as well as a desire to promote and save rare breeds.

“We had a farm for our personal horses that was on one of the main through roads from England to Scotland and we would find quite a few cars parked at the field where they had diverted because they’d heard about the horses and wanted to see them,” Vivienne said.

“We’d also seen in the showing world how we were starting to lose the older people who had the experience and interest and people from the younger generations weren’t wanting to come into it.

‘He’s amazing’: 18.2hh Clydesdale wins affiliated dressage with aimsfor summer regionals

The rider of an 18.2hh Clydesdale horse who has won with over 72% at his first two British Dressage (BD) shows says the plan is to aim for regionals and Area Festivals.

Jessica Martin-Legg took the ride on Springside Shiver Me Timber last August, when he was six, as his owner Marie Jenkins wanted her to produce him.

“We didn’t intend to do what we’re doing now, it just went that way!” 5’5” Jessica told H&H.

“He’s not my normal type of horse but he’s super trainable and I love riding him.”

Timber had not done much schooling, but Jessica said the more he has done, the easier he has found it.

“He didn’t find it easy at first,” she said. “I couldn’t even canter him in the arena, as he just didn’t have the balance; it was like trying to steer a boat! He was really heavy, and used to trip a lot, but he’s always been soft in the mouth and responsive to the aids, although you can hear him coming a mile off.

“He doesn’t ride as big as you might think, although he makes my horse feel like a pony.”

Jessica, who has competed up to advanced medium level on other horses, put forward the idea of dressage last autumn.

“I said to his owner: ‘How would you feel about entering a competition?’ and she thought he wouldn’t be able to, as he’s not an elegant warmblood,” Jessica said. “But I said he’s so trainable and lovely to ride, and it went from there.”

Timber scored over 70% every time out at unaffiliated level, progressing from intro to prelim, to novice, at which he scored over 80%.

“I work for [international rider and coach] Lara Edwards and we had a lesson with her; she said she thought we could go affiliated, so we did.”

On 15 May, Timber won his first BD prelim, with 73.75%, and came second in another class the same day. Four days later, he won another prelim and came second in his first affiliated novice test.

“Everyone stops and stares at him at shows because he’s so big,” said Jessica. “I don’t think people quite expect what happens next! Marie’s almost in tears every time he wins, as she just can’t believe it. He’s pretty cool.”

The plan now is for Timber to compete in the BD draught horse championships, as well as the summer regionals at prelim, and the area festivals at novice. Jessica also hopes to try Timber at dressage to music this year.

“We’re going to see how it goes,” she added. “He’s such a big horse, I don’t want to push him as far as possible but as long as he keeps enjoying it and can do it, we’ll go as far as we can.

“He’s so easy, although I have to say, the more I’ve done with him, the more he’s turned into a bit of a diva — but he’s amazing, and definitely special.”

‘Fantastic opportunity’ for most at-risk rare breeds in new championship classes

Rare breeds of the “highest concern” will be recognised at a show with new championship classes aimed at promoting the breeds’ high standards.

For the first time the Norfolk Equestrian Show (28 July) will host Rare Breed Survival Trust watchlist classes, with the highest-placed horses and ponies going on to compete in the RBST championship for priority and at-risk breeds. The classes follow the release of the 2021/2022 RBST watchlist published last month with updated categories; priority, at risk, UK native breeds and Irish breeds in the UK. Previously the categories were critical, endangered, vulnerable, at risk and minority.

Cleveland Bays, Dales, Dartmoors, Eriskays, Exmoors, Hackneys and Suffolk horses appear in the priority category. Clydesdale horses, Fell and Highland ponies, New Forests, and Shires have been classed as at risk.

RBST chief executive Christopher Price told H&H the watchlist classes will give dedicated owners and breeders of rare native horses and ponies the chance to demonstrate their “amazingly high standards”, and show the great potential of the breeds.

“We hope this will also encourage more people to get involved in the work to ensure rare native equine breeds such as Eriskays and Suffolks can thrive long into the future,” he said.

RBST chairman Gale Sprake added that with competitions so severely limited over the last 18 months, the trust is delighted to provide this “fantastic opportunity” to celebrate rare breeds, as well as the people, organisations and communities that support their survival.

“Each of our native pony and horse breeds has its own characteristics, unique features and history and each has played an extraordinary role in our nation’s history,” she said.

“The new RBST priority and at-risk classes at the Norfolk Equestrian Show will really show why they are special.”

Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association chief executive Mark Nicholas said the organisation is “thrilled” to be welcoming competitors.

Former show Clydesdale to enjoy second career as police horse

A Clydesdale horse who competed in the show ring and “always wants to please” has turned her hoof to a new career with the police.

West Yorkshire Police welcomed six-year-old Millie this year and the mare has now successfully passed her trial period.

A spokesman for the force said 17.2hh Millie was born in Devon, and moved to North Yorkshire as a three-year-old where she was involved in showing, picking up a number of rosettes.

“Her trainer thought she would make an ideal police horse and contacted West Yorkshire Police,” said the spokesman.

Millie will now take her police horse name Millgarth, after the former Leeds police station.

Millie replaces 22-year-old Breeze, who retired in September last year following 11 years with the force. A spokesman said at the time of his retirement the gelding would have “very difficult shoes to fill”.

Millie’s rider, PC Steven Durrans, said the mare is “exactly” what the force needs and she “fits in perfectly”.

“She’s so friendly and always wants to please. She’s got a great temperament; she’s very polite which is important for such a big horse,” he said.

“She passed her trial period with flying colours. In that four weeks she had to learn a little bit about the job; it started off with her doing some semi-rural patrols and progressed from there with nuisances, like flags and drums, and noise and rattles in the school to see how she reacted. She takes everything in her stride.”

Devastation as Clydesdale broodmare dies nine months after her colt from suspected public feeding

A vet and breeder who lost a Clydesdale horse colt after he was fed by passers-by, and has since lost his pregnant mother, says her breeding programme is “back to square one” and the issue of feeding horses needs to be highlighted.

South Lanarkshire-based Jennifer Spiers’ 11-month colt Kintra Oran Mhor developed impaction colic in spring last year while she was away on her honeymoon.

Jennifer told H&H a family member called to say the colt, known as Finn, was unwell and a vet attended.

“His condition worsened dramatically and the decision was made to put him to sleep,” she said. “It was made even harder because I was on the other side of the world and couldn’t do anything about it.

“The field he was in was fenced off with an electric fence but people still throw things in. Whole loaves of bread still in the packets were found, along with crisps, custard creams and other biscuits.”

Jennifer said the problem of people feeding the horses continued during lockdown with up to 200 people passing by every day.

“The horses were having to be constantly monitored. We have multiple signs up, and electric fencing to keep the horses away from the gate, but some days we found people in the field,” she said.

“Clydesdales are such friendly horses, they’ll speak to people, especially if someone is feeding them.”

On 29 December, Jennifer’s six-year-old Royal Highland prize-winning mare Malcolmwood Lady Muck, Finn’s dam, was found dead in the field.

“I went to check on the mares in the field and she wasn’t with the other two. I went to look for her and found her passed away,” she said.

“She was in foal and due in April, it’s just devastating. We are waiting for blood work and toxicology reports to confirm but I think this happened because she has been fed something. She was normal the night before, showed no signs of illness and had been in good health.”

Jennifer, who found multiple chocolate bar wrappers on the other side of the field gate that day, said the loss has “not fully hit home”.

“I’m absolutely devastated. I had such big plans for Mucky – she was a very placid mare, she just had this presence that made you feel calm,” she said.

Jennifer said she worries for her other horses in the field and plans to put more signs up.

“I don’t know why people think it’s ok to feed other people‘s horses and I don’t know how you can police it. When I see people passing the field I try speaking to them to explain what’s been happening and educate people but this issue really needs to be highlighted and I hope we can make a difference,” she said.

‘Saving the greatest horse’: Clydesdale stars in television documentary

Scotland’s treasured draught horse the Clydesdale is to become a big star of the small screen this Christmas when the BBC airs a documentary about the battle to preserve the breed.

Like many of the British heavy horses, the Clydesdale horse is now classed as vulnerable by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, having suffered the loss of its primary role since the onset of mechanisation.

Clydesdale: Saving the Greatest Horse is produced by the BBC, in partnership with Screen Scotland and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and follows Clydesdale enthusiast Janice Kirkpatrick as she travels to the Canadian Prairies to source a rare black mare from a bloodline “lost” to the UK.

Professor Kirkpatrick traces the story of the Clydesdale from its origins in the Clyde Valley, and meets the Canadian family who have bred these black horses for five generations.

Clydesdales were once numerous in their native Scotland, where they were first recognised as a breed in 1826, and went on to be so desired as a working animal that in 1911 a prized stallion sold for the equivalent of £1m. The animals were exported all over the world, where some of their bloodlines are still preserved.

“Once I realised that the Clydesdale was considered to be in the extinction vortex, I felt I could not stand by, I had to do something,” said Professor Kirkpatrick, a designer and graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, who now keeps Clydesdales on her farm on the Scottish coast.

The documentary covers her work to establish a global centre for the Clydesdale horse in Glasgow. The facility includes an animal genetics centre, farriery school, conservation and craftsmanship of leather and metal and a working rare breeds farm. It also plans innovative ways of engaging with local residents and the visitor economy, including through equine therapies and horse-centred tours and experiences.

Clydesdale blinded in shooting stars in new animation with Stephen Fry

A “gentle giant” Clydesdale horse blinded when he was shot in the eye by intruders is the star of a welfare charity’s festive animation, voiced by actor and writer Stephen Fry.

As part of Redwings’ Christmas fundraising campaign, Stephen tells the “inspirational” story of Boo, who was shot at point-blank range with an air rifle in 2009.

“This horrific attack was doubly distressing for Boo as he had already lost one eye to cancer, which meant he was left completely blind,” said a Redwings spokesman.

“Having been offered a home at the sanctuary, Boo – now 23 years old – continues to live happily with his field companion and ‘seeing eye’ horse Flynn.”

Stephen, who also voices the charity’s radio promotions, said he was “touched and delighted” to be given the opportunity to tell Boo’s story and be part of Redwings’ work.

“We love to share stories of our most recent rescues and their recoveries, but Boo is a shining symbol of the specialist care and love our teams give to our long-term residents every day – something they worked incredibly hard to continue throughout the coronavirus this year,” said Lynn Cuttress, the charity‘s chief executive.

“After he survived such an appalling act of cruelty, we never fail to be amazed and moved by the trust Boo places in us every day and we couldn’t think of a better resident to pay tribute to in our new animation. It’s been made even more special by the wonderful Stephen Fry agreeing to voice Boo’s story, for which we’re very thankful.”

Ms Cuttress added that with lockdown restricting access to visitor centres and the cancellation of fundraising activities, the charity wanted a creative way to raise awareness of its work.

‘Boys, your duty is done’: Two ‘standout’ police horses retire from duty

Two police horses who have been the “backbone” of a force for a combined 24 years have retired from duty.

On 2 October, South Wales Police held a farewell gathering for 18-year-old Irish draught Rubin and 19-year-old part-bred Clydesdale horse Samson as they “closed the stable door” on their policing careers.

A spokesman for the force told H&H Samson, who has served for 10 years, will retire to the Horse Trust in Buckinghamshire, while Rubin, who has been with the mounted unit for 14 years – and is the longest-serving horse the force has ever had – will retire to the Lluest Horse & Pony Trust in west Wales. The pair will this week make their way to their new homes, which have been selected based on their individual needs.

“They have worked tirelessly to help keep the public safe; from being part of the formal police escort at Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in Windsor to being personally thanked by Ed Sheeran after policing his concert in Cardiff,” said the spokesman.

PC Rick Lewis said the pair had been the “absolute backbone” of the department.

“In Rubin’s career he’s done absolutely everything; school visits, community engagements, day-to-day patrols, major events – he’s done it all,” he said.

“Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding was a real special moment and typical Rubin thought all the crowds were just there to see him. As much as he can be a bit fussy on the ground, he loves attention and any big event we do he just loves people coming up to say hello.”

PC Sadie James described Samson as one of the boldest horses the force has had – and one of the quickest trained.

“After he was trained he was allocated to me for a number of years so we had a good bond between the two of us,” she said. “He helped the new horses learn the ropes and he was one of the lead horses we would use in any sort of public disorder situation. I think everybody on the yard is going to miss Samson, me especially.”

PC Lewis said Rubin and Samson are two horses that would “stand out and shine” in any mounted section.

A Clydesdale foal born at a heavy horse centre struggling with no income during the coronavirus pandemic has proved a ray of light in hard times.

Viv Cockburn and her daughter Anna, who run the not-for-profit Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre in Northumberland, were delighted to welcome a healthy colt to their Clydesdale mare Primrose last Sunday (10 May).

Viv told H&H the foal is the first born to 10-year-old Primrose, sired by her childhood sweetheart, rare black Clydesdale horse Teddy, who was also born and brought up at the centre.

“Our vets were brilliant and we tried everything but just couldn’t get her in foal,” she said. “Then last summer, Northumberland Police were looking for a new horse. We thought we’d just run her with Teddy and see what happened, and the police said if she didn’t take, they’d consider her – and sure enough, she took. She obviously didn’t fancy being in the police.”

The foaling itself was straightforward, Viv said, although on a slightly chaotic night as the centre also had a pig due to farrow, a sheep lambing and a Welsh pony showing signs of colic at the same time.

And his arrival is good news for the breed, which is classed as vulnerable by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST).

“The Suffolk is in a bad way but there’s a lot of activity going on there, which is really good, but the Clydesdale is teetering a bit,” Viv said. “It seems a lot of mares are bought for riding and not breeding, which has an impact.”

The centre was set up some six years ago as the family had always had heavy horses, and noticed that even non-equestrians loved to see them.

The Cockburns took on a dilapidated steading, which is now home to 17 horses, as well as rare breed sheep and pigs, and two years ago earned RBST approval.

Their aim, as well as protecting and preserving the heavy horses, is to allow access to them to the public who may not otherwise have had a chance. They can not only meet the horses and watch professionals at work when the vets visit, but also get involved, such as driving them.

“There was a man here in his 80s a couple of years ago, propping up a wall; he said ‘I’ve just done something I never thought I’d do again’,” Viv said. “He’d been ploughing, like he used to at work.

“It’s all about being hands-on and learning about how important heavy horses were in our history. We also work with people who have Alzheimer’s, to help bring back memories.”

The centre has of course had to close its doors during lockdown, and is not eligible for any of the government help on offer. And as well as having the animals to feed, Viv was hit by a vet’s bill after the colt’s birth as he needed plasma administered twice.

“We applied for government support but we’re not eligible for anything,” she said. “My husband drives a lorry delivering food and we’re using his wages to keep the centre going. We’ve always relied on donations for people to come as we wanted to keep it accessible for everyone.

“We started a fundraising page as we had some regulars saying they were thinking about us and wanted to donate, and it’s so lovely so many people have donated as we don’t know when we’ll be able to re-open.

“It’s so nice to have the foal as everything is so awful at the moment.”

Mighty Clydesdale to be honoured with ‘magnificent’ sculpture

The birthplace of the Clydesdale horse is hoping to honour its relationship with the breed by erecting a “magnificent” sculpture.

The Lanark Community Development Trust is trying to raise funds for the project, which will celebrate the town’s long history with the heavy horse, which was first bred at a farm just across the river Clyde.

The sculpture will be placed near Lanark Auction Market which hosted Clydesdale horse sales for more than 140 years; although the horses were also sold at Lanark Fair from the mid-1700s.

The breed was developed from Flemish stallions, who were imported to Scotland and crossed with local mares, with the first known use of the name Clydesdale being recorded in 1826.

“The project will advance education by sparking local interest in the Clydesdale horse and Lanark’s agricultural heritage by providing a catalyst for the local community, local schools and visitors the chance to learn more about their heritage and the history of Lanark,” said trust chairman Sylvia Russell.

She added that this would be achieved through an “engaging schools programme, creation of an information leaflet and photographic exhibition” alongside the sculpture.

The trust is seeking financial contributions for the scheme, which is expected to cost £40,000.

“Any contribution or support, financial or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated to secure the success of this project,” Ms Russell added.

The promotion of Lanark’s relationship with the Clydesdale is one of a number of community projects launched by the trust, which aim to “use the arts to promote and enhance Lanark’s heritage and tourism offering as well as boosting civic pride”.

These include the development of the William Wallace Trail, the Lanark welcome signs, creation of the William Wallace Close and most recently the creation of the Cameronian Memorial Sculpture at the former Winston Barracks.

All hail the great Clydesdale: new gin celebrates historic breed

The great working breed, the Clydesdale horse, is being celebrated with the launch of a new gin.

The Wee Farm Distillery, a micro distillery run by Jenny and Stephen McKerr in Lanarkshire, is launching the Clydesdale Gin on 3 November.

Jenny told H&H the distillery has been working on the apple and rhubarb gin for 12 months.

“We’re beef and sheep farmers and our business value is about the spirit of Scottish farming. We wanted to do a Clydesdale gin to keep a connection to the working horse and celebrate the breed originating from here,” she said.

“We attend the Royal Highland Show (RHS) every year and the Clydesdales are always such a spectacle.”

Jenny said the label will feature the RHS 2019 best gelding West Forth Solo, owned by the Tennant family.

“Jimmy Tennant sent us photos of Solo and we had local artist Jan Laird paint him for the label. The label explains who Solo is, where he was bred and a bit about him,” she said.

“We’re trying to promote the local farms, local ingredients and local art to bring the gin together. One thing I’ve learnt is that people who are passionate about animals also seem to be passionate about gin so when you put the two together it works quite well.”

Jenny approached the Clydesdale Horse Society to find a special guest for the launch event, at The Heron Farm Shop, in Strathaven on 3 November.

“The society put a post on Facebook to see if someone would be interested in taking a Clydesdale along to the event and we received six calls within an hour. Owners are so enthusiastic about the breed,” she said.

“Bryan Lindsay is going to bring his gelding Dillars Rascal so people can meet him and learn about the heritage of the breed.”

Bryan told H&H 18.2hh four-year-old Rascal, who is broken to ride and drive, loves people and attention.

“We always welcome an opportunity to publicise the breed,” he said. “We now have seven Clydesdales and are totally besotted with them, we were delighted therefore when we heard about the launch and instantly volunteered to help.”

The gin will be available to buy directly from the Wee Farm Distillery following the launch.

A Clydesdale stallion owner has set out to prove that Suffolks aren’t the only heavies who can tackle a course of solid fences.

Lauren Champion, owner of 18.3hh Clydesdale horse Hector, was inspired after reading H&H’s story about Suffolk stallion Jensen and his owner Bruce Langley-McKim, who recently completed a one-day event at Burghley.

“After seeing your article, I decided to take my Clydesdale cross-country schooling with Richard Lucas, organised by my local riding club,” she said. “He did exceptionally well and everyone loved him.”

Lauren more usually jumps her 17.2hh Irish mare, but had to find a new ride after it was discovered she was in foal.

“It gave me the chance to ride Hector more — I have taken him hunting but we usually go past the jumps,” Lauren said. “I had never jumped him before I took him cross-country schooling, but Richard had put up a new beginner’s course which was a few logs on the floor, so I thought we could give that a go.

“Richard being Richard kept going with it though and he had us jumping fences the normal ponies would. Hector jumped everything put him front of him.”

Despite his inexperience, the eight-year-old, who is used as a breeding stallion, was happy to tackle steps up and down, natural obstacles and ditches.

“He was a bit reluctant to go in the water but when he finally did, he launched right into the middle,” Lauren said. “I think everyone was expecting me to fall off but I made sure I stayed on — otherwise my air jacket would have gone off and that would be £20 down the drain!”

Lauren said she now hoped to try more jumping with Hector, and wants to enter a pairs so she can use another horse to give him confidence cross-country.

“The hunting season is coming up so I will use him to do that, only this time I might take him over the jumps rather than round them,” she said.

“He is a good lad and these heavies need to get out there and do more. Some people think you can just hack them, but they can do whatever you want them to do.

“Clydesdales are quite versatile and Hector is no kickalong — one squeeze and you’re off,” she added.

+400 Clydesdales to head to the UK for prestigious breed show

The mighty Clydesdale horse is to be celebrated as a prestigious show is set to come to the UK for the first time.

The World Clydesdale Show is to be held at the P&J Live arena in Aberdeen, Scotland on 20 to 23 October 2022.

The show, which was first held in 2007, has previously run in the United States and Canada with the 2018 show taking place in Madison, Wisconsin. A spokesman said the organising committee had received “overwhelming” support for plans to hold the show in Scotland.

Classes are open to Clydesdales from around the world with more than 400 horses expected to attend. It is planned that 50 classes and 15 championships will run over the four days, including in-hand, ridden, driving and dressage sections.

“Attracting international visitors, the World Clydesdale Show 2022 will promote Clydesdale breeding in the UK, and further raise the profile of both the show and the society through national and international coverage, and encouraging new audiences to learn more about the breed,” said the spokesman.

“The committee considers all generations of the Clydesdale community and the public to be paramount to the success of the preservation of the breed and will therefore be putting on a number of youth classes to ensure opportunities exist to bring the younger members of the community together with the experienced members to encourage the exchange of knowledge and experience.”

Clydesdale Horse Society secretary Ian Roy said the society is delighted to support the team running the show.

‘Non-horsey’ boyfriend surprises rider with dream proposal involving a Clydesdale

A rider has celebrated her “best birthday by far” after her boyfriend planned a surprise proposal with a Clydesdale horse.

Ellé-Dee Martin was taken to Devon on her 23rd birthday last Friday (24 May) by her now-fiancé Jake Price for a long weekend.

“Jake booked for me to go riding on a Clydesdales over the moors the next morning. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do so he said it was a late present,” Ellé-Dee told H&H.

“As the group set out on the horses Jake said he would meet me by car at one of the stops and take some photos.”

Ellé-Dee, who was riding a Clydesdale called Bobby from Adventure Clydesdales, arrived at Combestone Tor an hour and a half later and the instructor suggested she go up ahead for some photos.

“Jake came and stood next to me and I thought he just wanted some photos of me on Bobby with the background but then told me he hadn’t taken for here for my birthday,” said Ellé-Dee.

“He pulled a box out of his pocket, got down on one knee and proposed.”

Ellé-Dee said she didn’t hesitate in saying yes.

“I had no idea it was coming – he hadn’t given anything away. On the way to the horses he had been a little bit quiet but nothing rang any bells,” she said.

“I still had an hour left of the ride so Jake went to meet me back at the stables. The rest of the ride I kept crying with happiness.”

Ellé-Dee said she could not have asked for anything better from “non-horsey” Jake.

“I’ve always said Devon is my favourite place in the whole world to visit – it’s my happy place. It’s very horsey and peaceful, it’s my ideal place,” she said.

“Jake will occasionally come and see my 14.2hh gelding Dice with me but he has no involvement with horses in the slightest. All my friends are saying they wish their boyfriends would propose like that.”

The couple, who have been together for seven years, celebrated their engagement with a meal and champagne.

“My engagement ring is beautiful – Jake picked it himself. The wedding will come later but I’ve started thinking about it and I definitely would like to have Dice there,” said Ellé-Dee.

Police need your help to find new equine recruits

Northumbria Police is seeking new equine “friends” to join its current crop of police horses.

The force’s mounted section is looking to recruit horses between 16.2hh and 17.3hh and of draught type – including Clydesdale horses, Shire horses, Irish draughts and part-breds.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said officers are asking the public for their help in the search.

“The section is one of the most popular departments in the force and the horses always get lots of attention when they are out on patrol,” said the spokesman.

“If they’re not policing a football match, you may be able to find them patrolling the local community to deter anti-social behaviour.”

When the police horses are not at work they will spend their time relaxing at the force’s stables in County Durham where they are “pampered” by a team of grooms.

PC Julia Wright said the force’s “fantastic” team takes very good care of the horses.

“When they’re out on patrol they get a lot of attention from the public who love to find out a bit about them and give them a stroke,” said PC Wright.

“But they also have a serious job to do and they are a fantastic asset to have in public order scenarios, whether that be a protest or a football match.

“We are always on the hunt for new horses to purchase and are asking horse owners to consider whether their animals would be suitable for a career in the police.”

Mares and geldings will be considered between the ages of five and 12. They must not have any medical issues and must be trainable with a good temperament, and no vices.

Clydesdales’ owner can ‘start to dream’ after public donations secure horses’ future

The owner of a Clydesdale trekking centre in Devon says he can “start to dream dreams” after the horses’ future was saved thanks to public donations.

Tim Ancrum and partner Aileen Ware, who run Adventure Clydesdales, feared they would have to sell their six horses if they couldn’t raise enough money to build new facilities.

The popular trekking business has been based at Brimpts Farm in Dartmoor for six years, where it has shared the cow barn with two tenant farmers.

But it was left in a race against time after the farmers said they needed the barn back by 31 March.

“We were lucky enough to find the farm here when we moved from Bodmin several years ago and they have been incredibly supportive of us but the nature of the farming operation meant [one of the farmers] needed his cattle shed back and eventually he had to give us a deadline,” Tim said.

Tim and Aileen set a crowdfunding target of £25,000 to build a barn at a nearby plot on the farm, with 15×15 pens to house the horses when they are working during the day.

“We had a tremendous response to the appeal and there was a groundswell of interest in making sure we didn’t disappear,” said Tim. “There was a point where we were on the edge for three weeks wondering if we’d survive or not but then we were featured on a local TV programme BBC Spotlight Southwest, which set the phones ringing.

“If we hadn’t raised the money we’d have had to sell the horses — I’m sure people would have bitten our hands off for them but they’re our friends and it would have broken our hearts.”

Tim said that once they had broken the £25,000 barrier they knew they would be able to build a new base — but to his surprise the donations kept coming, and the crowd-funding page total is now over £33,000.

“People have given us from £5 to £15,000; it’s been astonishing the level of concern and interest in Clydesdales and heavy horses. People don’t want to lose them, they are a bit of our history,” he said.

“A lot of more experienced riders are attracted to come and ride them on Dartmoor — we had about 5,000 customers last year and there are 11,000 people who follow us on Facebook.”

Tim now hopes the additional funds will help them attract more visitors and even expand their herd.

“It’s looking like we might now be able to contribute to the numbers of Clydesdales in the UK by getting some mares and having our own little breeding stock — that would be my dream,” he said.

“We’re passionate about Clydesdale horses — they are classed as vulnerable with 500-700 registered breeding mares in the country. We feel it would be a great shame to lose what is an amazing and versatile horse and riding with them on the moor has given them an extra purpose.”

The business is also hoping to share its passion for the breed by building classroom areas in the barn where people can learn about the heavy horses, as well as the moor.

“I think we will bring in more drop-in visitors that way with people just wanting to meet the horses,” he added.

Budweiser has released its 2019 Super Bowl advertisement, the UK adaptation of which is due to launch this week (2 February).

The video, the latest in the beer brand’s series of Super Bowl ads featuring the famous Clydesdale horses, is aimed at bringing Budweiser’s “long-term commitment to renewable electricity to the biggest stage in the world”.

Titled Wind Never felt Better, the commercial shows an eight-strong team of Clydesdales pulling a dray through a landscape of crop fields and wind turbines, set to Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind.

It was designed to publicise manufacturer AB InBev’s pledge to brew using 100% renewable electricity by 2025.

Budweiser’s European marketing director Rowan Chidgey said: “This is a truly historic moment for Budweiser, as we’re bringing our pledge to brew with 100% renewable electricity to a global audience at one of the most talked-about stages in the world – the Super Bowl.

“Every year we produce some of the most ground-breaking adverts, and this year will be one of our biggest yet. We’re proud in the UK to say that we stand by the global commitment to offer our customers high quality beer that’s been brewed sustainably, so that people can continue to enjoy it for thousands of years in the future.”

In December 2018, AB InBev UK signed the largest unsubsidised electricity deal in UK history with Europe’s largest solar energy company, Lightsource BP to buy 100% renewable electricity for its UK operations. The 15-year contract will enable Lightsource BP to build new solar farms, providing AB InBev’s two main breweries with enough electricity to power the equivalent of 18,000 homes.

To “further emphasise” Budweiser’s commitment, the company is donating “clean” electricity to Atlanta to power the city for the week of the Super Bowl, which takes place on 3 February.

Desperate appeal to save British breeds from extinction

“Urgent action” is needed to save three British heavy horse breeds from extinction, the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) has warned.

The RBST has launched an appeal for support in its efforts to protect Shire horses, Clydesdale horses and Suffolk horses, numbers of which are “worryingly low”.

Last year, 240 Shire, 199 Clydesdale and just 25 Suffolk pedigree foals were registered.

“These numbers are in stark contrast to the 2.6 million heavy horses being used in agriculture and trade at the dawn of the 20th century,” said an RBST spokesman

“The mechanisation of farming and warfare has meant the original purposes of heavy horses may be a thing of the past, but these large horses have an essential role to play today, including in the army, policing, equine therapy and commercial logging.”

The RBST, the only UK charity dedicated to preserving rare farm animal and equine breeds, has created a video celebrating the heavy horse, and a fundraising appeal.

“These working class heavy horse heroes need our help now so that they can survive and thrive in the future, said trust president Jimmy Doherty.

The film celebrates the breeds’ “crucial” roles in agriculture, transport and war, in Britain and abroad, as well as their uses today.

“These breeds of horse reflect human developments and accomplishments across centuries,” said the spokesman.

“Our use of horses throughout history alone dictates that they are just as worthy of conservation as any other breed, landscape, stately home or historic monument.”

A major aspect of the RBST’s work is collecting genetic material, which is stored in the UK National Livestock Gene Bank, “making it possible to re-create a breed if extinction occurs”.

Budweiser’s Clydesdales to miss the Super Bowl as new advert goes live

The wait is over for the new Budweiser advert featuring the company’s iconic Clydesdale horses.

The latest ad will not be shown in its usual Super Bowl slot, but was released online on Tuesday (30 January).

Titled “Beer Country”, the clip will run on television after the Super Bowl (4 February), but was released beforehand on social media.

“The Clydesdales are, and always will be, a big part of Budweiser’s history,” Ricardo Marques, Budweiser’s vice-president of marketing, told US press.

“They’re not only part of our family, but our fans’ too. And each year we hear the request for more Clydesdales, so we created this special film to honour them.”

Eight Clydesdales are featured in the advert — Alex, Stan, Lad, Dewey, Ace, Rascal, Rip and Pee Wee.

It ends with a Clydesdale galloping along a Californian beach, and another rearing alongside the Grand Canyon.

The Budweiser advert that will run during this year’s Super Bowl is about the company’s programme providing clean drinking water for communities hit by natural disasters.

History of the Budweiser Clydesdales

Originally used for pulling heavy cargo, the Clydesdale was brought to North America in the mid-19th century.

The Budweiser Clydesdales made their first public appearance in 1933 and since then they have featured in two presidential inaugurations. They appeared in Harry Truman’s inaugural parade in 1949, and then again for Bill Clinton in 1993.

The beer brand’s Super Bowl adverts have featured Clydesdales for the past 30 years.

Budweiser’s 2013 advert “Brotherhood” was voted the greatest Super Bowl ad of all time.

The advert, which shows the bond between a breeder and a Clydesdale, came out on top according to US TV channel CBS’ viewers.

Jockey Bryony Frost celebrated her win in Exeter’s popular Clydesdale race with a Frankie Dettori-style flying dismount.

Bryony was riding 11-year-old Siryl in the the annual Devon Day race, which took place on Sunday (26 November).

She was victorious by a half length, beating Nico De Boinville on Midge and Nick Scholfield on Salvo.

The race was held to raise funds for Devon Air Ambulance

“To join in with this sort of thing and to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance is brilliant and what the racing community is all about,” said Bryony, whose father Jim won the 1989 Grand National on Little Polvier.

“My family live on Dartmoor and we’ve used the air ambulance before. It’s a really wonderful initiative and I’m so happy to support it.”

Tim Ancrum, who owns the Clydesdales with Aileen Ware, said it was a “fantastic day”.

“Not every Clydesdale is lucky enough to have a professional jockey on board!” he said.

“It’s fabulous to be able to raise money for such a great cause. We’re so proud of Siryl, who is the veteran of the horses, yet managed to pull it out the bag and win for the second year in a row.”

Tim added that the race raises awareness of the Clydesdale breed, which is diminishing in numbers with only 1,000 breeding mares left in the world.

“This race helps to showcase the versatility of the horses and increase awareness of them,” added Aileen.

Clydesdales and Dartmoor hill ponies showed off their turn of foot at Exeter racecourse last weekend

“Their numbers are dwindling and it’s important that we keep them in the public eye.”

The race raised more than £2,300 in bets taken on the day, with further funds made from a bucket collection and race day “owners”.

Siryl’s “owners”, Lisa Gasson-Jones and Kelly Rogers from Buckfastleigh, said: “It’s such a good cause and the horses are wonderful. We went for a ride with Tim the other day and decided to support them by becoming owners for the day.”

Thoroughbreds stepped out of the limelight at Exeter on Sunday (20 November) to make way for an alternative breed of racehorse.

The track’s annual Clydesdale race on Devon Day raised £3,000 for Devon Air Ambulance with last year’s winner, Midge, once again victorious.

This year the gelding was ridden by jockey Noel Fehily, who gave a salutary wave as he crossed the finish.

“It’s a great cause, a good bit of fun and it’s great for the people that brought their horses here – well done to them,” Noel said.

Professional jockeys Aiden Coleman, Daryl Jacob, Sean Bowen, Tom Bellamy and James Best also raced aboard Clydesdales Solo, Siryl Allan, Frankie Doodle and Tom Parker.

The Clydesdale horses are owned by Tim Ancrum and Aileen Ware of Adventure Clydesdales, a trekking centre based at Brimpts on Dartmoor.

“It’s a wonderful day and a fantastic opportunity to show off these wonderful animals who love their opportunity to demonstrate their agility and speed,” Tim said.

“They are fantastic animals to ride and make wonderful conveyances across the moor.”

The racecourse’s general manager Dan Thompson thanked Mr Ancrum for his support.

“We’re so grateful to Tim and Aileen for bringing their horses, to the jockeys for riding them and to everyone who placed a bet, every penny of which was donated to the Devon Air Ambulance,” he said.

“Devon Day is growing every year and it’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all that is so good about our lovely county.”

Clydesdales train on Dartmoor ahead of Exeter ‘phenomenon’

Gentle giants of the equine world have been getting fit ready for this year’s Clydesdale race at Exeter racecourse.

The annual fixture will take place on 20 November when the track celebrates Devon Day.

Professional jockeys including Devon-born Nick Scholfield will pilot the heavy horses down the home straight in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).

Clydesdale horses Tom Parker, Siryl, Big Allan, Frankie, Doodle, Midge, Salvo, Ecco and Solo have been in training for the race.

The horses belong to Tim Ancrum and Aileen Ware of Adventure Clydesdales, which specialises in providing riding holidays across Dartmoor.

“We’ve been having a lot of fun training the horses on Dartmoor, galloping them in closely set groups in readiness for the race,” said Mr Ancrum.

“They find it all very exciting. This race is such a wonderful spectacle and so many people enjoy it.

“The horses will race over two furlongs again, and we hope they will provide a thrill for racegoers.

“The horses love it, and although they will never have the spark of a thoroughbred, they do get quite bouncy in anticipation of the race.”

Nick is hoping he has better luck than last year when he was unplaced on Big Al.

“It’s such great fun riding in the race,” he said. “They may not be the fastest, but just being on board is brilliant, and you can’t help but smile, all the way down the home straight.”

Last year’s winner was James Best who rode Midge to victory.

“It’s absolutely brilliant taking part in the race and raising money for the Devon Air Ambulance,” he said.

“The build up before the race is brilliant, and there is so much camaraderie and good will.”

Exeter general manager Daniel Thompson added: “The Clydesdale race has proved a real phenomenon since we first introduced the race three years ago and we are delighted that once again we will be supporting the DAAT.

“We have the support of local bookmakers who will all be running a book so that people can bet, with every single penny donated to DAAT.

“We’ve also offered people the chance to buy a Clydesdale for the day and experience ‘racehorse’ ownership — that is always a lot of fun.

“The race is so popular and draws a huge amount of interest from people who might not normally go racing.

“Seeing their white faces come charging down the home straight is an incredible sight to behold.”

The Clydesdale race comes under starters’ orders at 12.20pm.

There are also seven conventional races on the card.

Budweiser welcomes new Clydesdale foal

Budweiser is celebrating the birth of its newest Clydesdale horse — a foal called Mac.

Mac is the first foal of 2016 for the lager company and was born at 1.20am on Tuesday 16 January.

He was foaled at the Warm Springs Ranch in Boonville, Missouri, home of more than 160 Clydesdale horses used for promotional work for the company.

“Mac’s name is a nod to the iconic legacy of the Budweiser Clydesdales, the most macro of all icons, representing Budweiser’s quality for more than 80 years,” read a statement from Budweiser.

Originally used for pulling heavy cargo, the breed was brought to North America in the mid-19th century.

“The tradition of the Budweiser Clydesdales started in 1933 when they made their first-ever appearance as a gift from August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch to their father in celebration of the repeal of Prohibition,” said Anheuser-Busch.

“Realising the marketing potential of a horse-drawn beer wagon, the company also arranged to have a second six-horse Clydesdale hitch sent to New York.

“The Clydesdales made a stop in Washington DC in April 1933 to re-enact the delivery of one of the first cases of Budweiser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.”

The beer brand’s Super Bowl adverts — which have featured Clydesdales for the past 30 years — have become an annual treat for soppy story lovers.

Last year Budweiser’s advert named “Puppy Love” tried to tug at viewers’ heart-strings even further by throwing a Labrador puppy into the mix.

However, Budweiser’s 2013 advert “Brotherhood” was voted the greatest Super Bowl ad of all time.

The advert — which shows the bond between a breeder and a Clydesdale — came out on top according to US TV channel CBS’ viewers.

Feathers were flying as Clydesdales battled it out at Exeter racecourse on Sunday (22 November).

Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Ian Popham, Andrew Thornton, Nick Scholfield, James Best, Hadden Frost and Sam Twiston-Davies were onboard the heavy horses for the unusual annual

For a while it looked like five-year-old gelding Frankie Doodle and Nick Scholfield would be victorious, but Midge came through to win in the closing strides under James Best.

“It was brilliant and all for such a good cause. It’s great fun riding them,” said James, who later won the Higos Motor Insurance Deal Handicap Chase riding St Dominick trained by Jackie Du Plessis.

The Clydesdale geldings are owned by Tim Ancrum and Aileen Ware, of Adventure Clydesdales.

”All the horses were fantastic and they really enjoyed themselves,” said Tim. “It makes a change from their usual job carrying riders across Dartmoor.”

Spectators had the chance to loan a Clydesdale for the day and experience owning a “racehorse”.

Veryan Codd, who is a huge fan of Clydesdales, had travelled down from Leicestershire to watch the race. She was thrilled to be the winning “owner” for the day of Midge.

“It was such a fabulous race with a really great atmosphere,” she said. “It’s good to see these wonderful horses appreciated by so many people.”

Clydesdale horses will thunder down Exeter racetrack on Sunday (22 November). The annual race was launched in 2013 and takes place on Devon Day at the west country track.

Six Clydesdale geldings will be partnered with professional jockeys for this year’s two-furlong race. H&H columnist Richard Johnson, Sam Twiston-Davies, Aidan Coleman, Nick Scholfield and Hadden Frost will be taking part.

The horses belong to Tim Ancrum and Aileen Ware of Adventure Clydesdales, which specialises in providing riding holidays across Dartmoor.

“I always get quite excited about it. It’s quite a sight, especially with National Hunt jockeys — they love it,” Tim told H&H.

“The race proves them to be a very good riding horse as well as a draught horse.

“Tom Parker has been the horse that has won the most races but Frankie Doodle and Collessie Reflection could give him a run for his money.”

Actor and British Horse Society president Martin Clunes has supported the race since it began.

“It’s really something to see them with their feathers flying,” he told H&H. “The jockeys look like tiny toys and all have smiles on their faces.

“The race is very popular and all sorts of people come to watch, including those who might not usually spend a day at the races.

“It would be so nice if they did at all the racecourses.”

Martin owns two Clydesdale geldings, Ronnie and Bruce. He bought the pair when they were six months old and they are now rising six.

“I’ve started dressage lessons with Bruce — I’ve agreed to do a display at Windsor for the British Horse Society,” he said.

“I’m also taking Ronnie on the Dartmoor Derby next year. They are so sure-footed and honest as the day is long.

“Tim is such a brilliant ambassador for the Clydesdale and is determined to prove their worth.”

The event raises funds for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).

Adopt a gentle giant, 19hh Digger joins charity scheme

A gentle giant has joined World Horse Welfare’s adoption scheme as the biggest horse the charity has ever cared for.

Standing at over 19hh, Clydesdale horse Digger has been a huge hit with visitors to his home at the World Horse Welfare Belwade Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Aberdeenshire.

Digger is just four inches smaller than Europe’s largest living horse and has a bridle specially made to fit his head.

He has recently joined World Horse Welfare adopt a horse scheme in place of donkey, Whisky, who has now been rehomed.

“When we were considering potential equine candidates to replace Whisky on the adopt a horse scheme, Digger quite literally stood head and shoulders above the rest,” said Eileen Gillen, centre manager at Belwade Farm.

Eileen has been caring for Digger since he arrived in early 2008 as a four-year-old. His owner contacted World Horse Welfare to ask for help when he was growing fast and problems had started to occur with the joints in his hind legs.

The gelding received veterinary care from the charity and continued to grow — earning his title as the biggest horse the charity has cared for.

Digger caught the attention of The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and was accepted on a two-year training programme to become a drum horse.

Unfortunately, it became apparent that he was much better suited to life in the slow lane away from London, so he returned to Belwade Farm in 2012.

“He already has a huge following with visitors travelling from all over the UK to meet him and our adopters loved seeing him at the recent adopters’ day which we held to welcome him on to the scheme and say goodbye to Whisky (pictured above),” added Eileen.

“Whisky was a great character and we’re delighted that he is now in a new home, receiving the love and pampering that he deserves. I would say that Digger has some big shoes to fill but I think his shoes are plenty big enough already!”

Shires vs Clydesdales: who was victorious?

Shires emerged victorious in the inaugural battle of the heavy horses at Lingfield this weekend (6 June), winning over their fellow heavy horse breed, the Clydesdales.

And the dual Grand National winning jockey Leighton Aspell was back in the winner’s enclosure — this time aboard a 17.2hh Shire.

“It was harder than the National,” he joked.

The rider partnered Flash in Lingfield Park’s two-furlong Showerking Flying Feathers Heavy Horse Stakes, in which Shires went head-to-head with Clydesdales for the first time.

And the winning horse had earlier in the week been taken for a spin on the racecourse by H&H art editor Garry Ashton-Coulton.

Jacquie Gardiner, from the organisers of the race, Hurst Green Shires, said: “The Shires were definitely the winners.

“This race is about, yet again, proving the versatility of these great horses along with highlighting their endangerment as breeds.

“We were determined to show that these fantastic horses have a place in the 21st century. This year’s theme of Shire vs Clyde showcases the differences in these two types and introduced a bit of friendly rivalry between the breeds.”

Top National Hunt jockeys saddled up to try and win the coveted title in a race, which earned national recognition when it was launched in 2013.

Judges praised the innovation of the event as they awarded the Surrey racecourse overall winners of the events category at the annual Racecourse Association Showcase and Awards.

The shire horse race was first organised to raise awareness for the endangered breed, which is on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s “at risk” list because there are so few breeding mares.

The first race was won by Mark Grant while last year’s race was won by Mark Goldstein.

Andrew Perkins, executive director of Lingfield Park Resort, added: “I’m thrilled we are once again able to stage this fabulous race.

“The fact that there was even more of a competitive twist this year with the Shires v. the Clydesdales, has made it even more exciting.”

What’s it like to race-ride a heavy horse? [VIDEO]

Ahead of Lingfield Park's heavy horse race (6 June), Horse & Hound's Garry Ashton-Coulton took one of the Shires for a spin up the track to get a feel for these gentle giants

The other morning I had a strange equestrian related problem in the shape of an affliction I had not suffered for some considerable time.

My jaw muscles were in the grip of a vice-like spasm, not I must hasten to say from an over tightening of the chinstrap on my hat, but from a surfeit of grinning, laughing and whooping.

The reason for this was that I had just ridden a horse around Lingfield Park racecourse, and in an assault of drumming hooves and flying sand, I hadn’t had such a blast since galloping a Spanish horse along a cliff top path in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

‘A towering hairy-legged mountain of a Shire’

My mount, Jack, was not however a prancing, hot-blooded racing machine, but a towering hairy-legged mountain of a Shire, with the body of a builders van and feet the size of a greedy man’s dinner plate.

Yet in his own gentle, stoic way he is no lesser an athlete than his thoroughbred counterpart.

With his huge ground-eating gallop and enormous, willing engine, he eats up the all-weather track like a hungry freight train.

Think of it as the difference between driving a frantic high-revving sports car, and a big diesel Range Rover with enough force to pull up an oak tree, fast and powerful, but with the comfort of a well-upholstered sofa.

The jaw crushing grin started the minute we were led around the Lingfield collecting ring and out onto the pristine all-weather track.

‘A big rolling walk’

It was like sitting atop a double decker bus with a big rolling walk.

I could imagine the race-day punters in amazement at the unlikely pairing before them, wondering when I would put on the armor and ask them had they seen the Black Knight.

Accompanied by Pat, Jack’s slightly more streamlined Clydesdale field mate we set off at a comfortable walk down the long straight. On turning at the bottom for the return run, the two great beasts needed no encouragement to blast away from the line like a couple of hairy rockets, and judging by the eagerness and pricked ears they where having just as much fun as I was. After that it was a case of rinse and repeat.

It’s a battle of the heavy horses — next week Clydesdales will be going head-to-head with Shire horses on the racetrack.

The breeds will be going up against each other in a two-furlong race on 6 June at Lingfield Park.

Shires have raced at the track before, and Clydesdales have run at Exeter, but it will be the first time the two breeds have competed at a racecourse.

“This race is about proving the versatility of these great horses along with highlighting their endangerment as breeds. We are determined to show that these fantastic horses have a place in the 21st century. This year’s theme of Shire vs Clyde showcases the differences in these two types and introduces a bit of friendly rivalry between the breeds,” said Jacquie Gardiner, from Hurst Green Shires, organisers of the race.

“The history of the Shire and Clydesdale is intertwined. The Clydesdale was developed for use from the Scottish borders and upwards and the Shire was for middle England but both became very popular as working horses for industry and agriculture.

“Their slightly different build made them suited to the different types of ground they were working with. With the onset of the Great War, huge numbers were requisitioned from around the country to serve in the army. This and the subsequent mechanisation of farming left the breeds at critical numbers in the 1970s. A breeding program and some very determined farmers and producers saved these beautiful animals for future generations but they remain endangered.”

County show to host an array of heavy horse classes

Fans of heavy horses will be heading to Nottinghamshire this spring, as the county’s show is the only one in the country to hold classes for all breeds of heavy horse.

At this year’s Nottinghamshire County Show (9-10 May) there will be separate in-hand classes for Clydesdale horses, Suffolk Punch, Shire horses and Percherons — and all breeds will compete together in the turnout classes.

The show also is hosting a qualifier event for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) shire of the year in 2015 after a break last year.

Entries are expected from all over the country for the qualifier — which was last held at the show in 2013.

Liz Lambert has attended the show for more than 40 years and is now the chief steward of the heavy horse classes.

She feels it is important to keep heavy horses a regular feature of county shows.

“It is important to maintain the future of the heavy horse classes and keep that aspect of county shows alive,” said Mrs Lambert.

“The Suffolk in particular is an endangered breed and there are very limited numbers or opportunities for them to be showed to the public and compete.”

Heavy horse breeders travel from Scotland, Kent, Hampshire and Wales who want to take part.

Jayne Olney, showground manager said: “This is an exciting year for the equestrian world as we host the shire horse of the year qualifier.

“We want the show to be perceived as having those traditional classes but also moving with the times and sharing the Nottinghamshire Country show’s history with a modern audience.”

The 132nd show is open from 8am-6pm on both Saturday 9 May and Sunday 10 May. Tickets are £15 on the gate, £10 online or over the phone.

The largest gathering of shire horses in Britain can be seen at the Shire Horse Society show at Arena UK in Lincolnshire on 21-22 March.

More than 250 shire horses from across Europe are expected, as well as spectators from around the globe.

“It is the chance to celebrate a breed that was once in danger of dying out but is now experiencing a resurgence in popularity, both as a working animal and a riding horse,” said Shire Horse Society secretary David Ralley-Davies.

Adult day tickets cost £8 in advance, £6 for under 12s and seniors.

It’s the moment we have all been waiting for… Budweiser has released its Super Bowl advert for 2015 (see above) — again featuring a Clydesdale and his puppy friend.

The beer brand’s Super Bowl adverts — which have featured Clydesdales for the past 30 years — have become an annual treat for soppy story lovers.

Last year Budweiser’s advert named “Puppy Love” tried to tug at viewers’ heart-strings even further by throwing a Labrador puppy into the mix.

This year the puppy and the Clydesdale are back, but unfortunately the horse doesn’t manage to keep a close enough eye on his new friend and he goes missing.

The 2015 advert, which was released yesterday (Thursday 28 January), has already had nearly 5.8m views on YouTube ahead its airing during this Sunday’s Super Bowl (1 February).

Advertising slots during the Super Bowl command record sums — with a 30 second slot during the event reported to cost around $4 million (£2.7m).

Brian Perkins, a Budweiser vice president said: “The Budweiser Clydesdales have appeared in our Super Bowl ads for nearly three decades,

“They continue to serve as time-honoured symbols of how we brew our beer: remarkable care and attention, sparing no expense, the highest quality and consistency.”

Dales pony ‘critical’ on rare breeds watchlist [H&H VIP]

As the financial climate fails to pick up and the threat of overbreeding is ever present, some of our native breeds are in danger of becoming extinct. This month, Dales and Dartmoor ponies have been recategorised as “critical” and “endangered” respectively on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) watchlist.

As numbers of breeding females fall the Dales pony has moved from “endangered” to “critical” — meaning there are now fewer than 300 breeding mares. The Dartmoor moves from “vulnerable” to “endangered” with between 300-500 breeding mares.

“Described as a ‘species in crisis’ in the 2014 watchlist report, native equines continue to struggle in 2015,” said Tom Beeston of the RBST.

The risk is calculated by a significant fall in registration numbers and the estimated population trend.

“Last year’s watchlist was described as a wake-up call — this year’s delivers the message that we have more work to do, not less,” added Mr Beeston.

However, breed enthusiasts say the fall in numbers is not due to dwindling popularity, but because of responsible breeding.

The RBST agrees that due to the financial climate there is little or no market for youngstock, which has had a knock-on effect, reducing the number of pedigree registered foals.

“This has been necessary to prevent overbreeding unwanted foals, but it puts some breeds at particular risk,” said Mr Beeston.

Critical condition for Dales

Jo Asby of the Dales Pony Society told H&H the recent recategorising of the breed was “not unexpected”.

“2014 saw only 87 foals registered in the UK, but it is a reflection of the unique attributes of the Dales pony that traditional breeders do not breed foals for which there is no market,” she said. “The mass over-production of cheap black and white cobs has flooded the market for the up-to-weight family all-rounder, and the depressed financial climate means good working homes are hard to come by.”

Dales breeder Charlie Parker told H&H he had “felt a responsibility to cut back” until the market picked up.

“The summer of 2014 saw a slight rise in trade and so I have had some mares covered for this year,” he said. “I don’t feel that their popularity has fallen, but as with many of our British natives they are undervalued; we all need to sing their praises.”

Delia Weedon of Akehurst Dales Stud bought her first ponies in 1973. Since then she has bred 59 fillies and 55 colts. She doesn’t believe their popularity is decreasing either, just that the market is “very slow”.

“I have several youngsters still unsold, so for the first time since 1976 I shall not be having any foals in 2015, and my 15-year-old broodmare is about to start a new adventure, being ridden for the first time,” she said.

“It will be hard for the good breeders to keep going when people expect to buy a good, fully registered pony for less than it has cost to produce.”

Dartmoors now ‘endangered’

Although not as severe a situation as the Dales, the Dartmoor — a stalwart of the British showing circuit — is also on the decline.

But Viv Brown from the Dartmoor Pony Society (DPS) told H&H the society is “satisfied that the breed will continue to flourish” despite the fall in category.

“There is still a strong demand for ponies, who excel at the top level in all disciplines, and whose success is far greater in comparison with other breeds with much higher numbers of foals being born every year,” she said.

“The RBST’s figures do not include colts, supplementary registered foals or foals born abroad,” added Mrs Brown.

“Recently more colts have been born or registered than fillies, which does ensure a supply of ridden and driven ponies. Sadly, we cannot predict whether a breeder is going to have fillies only.”

Breeder Rod Newbolt-Young told H&H that DPS members have recognised the depressed economic situation by carrying out a responsible breeding programme. This is reflected in the numbers.

“When the situation changes the mares will be put back in foal to meet the demand,” he said.“Within the past few weeks we have seen signs this is beginning to happen, which is encouraging.”

Mr Newbolt-Young added that negative publicity surrounding the Dartmoor hill pony — an entirely separate breed — last year, when one organisation suggested preserving its future by eating them, was not helpful to the purebred breed.

“The Dartmoor pony is not for eating. In the valued, true-type Dartmoor pony almost all the breeding is controlled and pre-planned,” he said.

Remaining steady

In better news, Clydesdales, Cleveland Bays and Shires have seen increased registrations compared to the previous year.

The Clydesdale remains in the “vulnerable” category, but enthusiasts are positive about the breed’s future.

“The numbers remain stable and we’ve had two reasonable years [2013 and 2014],” Marguerite Osborne from the Clydesdale Horse Society told H&H.

“It’s not a huge increase but it’s steady and they’re doing quite well, so it’s positive.”

Tim Ancrum from Adventure Clydesdale said he has noticed a “steady increase in interest” in the breed in the 13 years that he has been involved with heavy horses.

He believes the key is in the “amazing adaptability” of the breed.

The centre runs rides on the “rugged terrain of Dartmoor” and recently lent horses to take to the turf at Exeter racecourse (pictured above).

“I have seen the value of young heavies rise substantially over the years, and if the value increases the incentive to breed them rises, thereby helping the breeds to claw back from the brink,” he said.

Preserving for the future

The RBST told H&H it “remains very concerned” by the population trends and that much work is still required to help conserve these breeds.

Mr Beeston added that the RBST gene bank is an “essential insurance policy” for the future.

“The economic climate does not suggest that the lack of market is likely to be reversed any time soon. Conservation measures, like semen collections and gene banking, must be employed, so that if stallions are not able to be bred from now, their genes are at least banked for future use,” he said. “That, in turn, means that we have to look at ways to substantially ramp up our fundraising efforts to raise the essential revenue that will enable us to continue our work.”

Nick Scholfield’s racing blog: A different breed of racehorse

It’s been a busy few weeks, I’ve mainly been driving up and down the country, so I’ve spent plenty of quality time with my car.

However, as a total change to the norm, I took part in the Clydesdale race on Sunday (23 November) at Exeter, which was great fun.

It was the second year they’ve run it, and it drew in around 3,000 people— bigger than Haldon Gold Cup day I think.

I was riding the same horse as last year, my old mate Big Al (pictured in the red and yellow colours), and we finished third — again. The same horse, Tom Parker, won as last year. I reckon they had a chat among themselves.

Big Al was great — but third is clearly his position, he’s found it and he’s sticking with it. It’s great entertainment though, and there was a massive crowd who all seemed to be loving it.

Racing a Clydesdale is obviously very different to riding a thoroughbred — they’re much wider and slower for starters! But they were raring to go and as soon as the flag went they were off into canter. It was a bit like going back to Pony Club — I gave mine a couple of Pony Club kicks to get him going.

People kept asking what the going was like. It was soft, but on a horse that size it was pretty much good to firm — they made light weather of the ground with their massive feet.

It was a great atmosphere and some good light-hearted fun. All the jockeys and especially the horses enjoyed it too.

A cover star

There’s been some quality racing recently.

I’ve got a nice ride this weekend — Irving in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle. He fell last time out at Wincanton but he’s been doing a lot of schooling and he doesn’t seem to be lacking any confidence, but we’ll see how he goes in the race. We’ve done as much homework as we can do with him, so we’re prepared but you don’t really know until you get there.

He was featured on the H&H cover with me on board couple of weeks ago for the National Hunt special (6 November) so it will be nice to be reunited with him.

I got a fair few phone calls about that, I’d always wanted to be a cover star…

Top class racing

I’ve had a couple of nice winners recently too — Jolly’s Cracked It has won twice at Ascot this month, which has been great. He’s trained by Harry Fry and is a really nice horse and definitely one for the future. I think he’ll be aimed at a Grade One Hurdle soon. He’s got bundles of potential.

Melodic Rendezvous — who I won my first Grade One on — was out at Haydock at the weekend, while I was riding at Ascot. It was weird not riding him and I was a bit disappointed with his run. The race was run on a flat course though, which isn’t ideal for him and he was taking on some strong horses including The New One. When you’re up against horses of that calibre you need everything in your favour. However, on a different day I think he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

It was nice to see Willie Mullins bring his horses over from Ireland — it’s great for English racing as it makes it more competitive. Not so good for us as they win everything! Faugheen ran really well under Ruby Walsh at Ascot. So it was great to see them, but we don’t want to see them too often as they make life harder!

Clydesdales and Dartmoor hill ponies showcase their speed [VIDEO]

Fans at Exeter were treated to three different types of racing on Sunday (23 November), as not only were the traditional thoroughbreds running, but Dartmoor hill ponies and Clydesdales also took to the track.

More than 3,000 racegoers turned out to see the three varieties of equine take up the challenge on “Devon Day” at the racecourse.

Last year’s Clydesdale race was such a success that Exeter decided to bring back the heavy horses for a second race this year. And fans were not disappointed.

It was a race that closely echoed last year — with Tom Parker once again passing the post in front, this time with conditional jockey Keiron Edgar on board.

“It was really good fun,” said Keiron. “We were slowly away but he got into his stride and he won easily in the end.”

The other jockeys who climbed into the larger than usual saddles, included H&H blogger Nick Scholfield, Daryl Jacob, Aidan Coleman, James Best, Alice Mills and Lucy Gardner.

TV star Martin Clunes, who is a supporter of heavy horses, said it was “a very exciting race”.

“More racecourses should do this as it is great fun and really highlights the breed,” he added.

The Clydesdales are all owned by Tim Ancrum of Adventure Clydesdales.

Tim said the horses enjoyed their day out.

“It’s just wonderful to bring the boys here and let everyone see them,” he said.

“They are so versatile, steady and they keep on going. There was a wonderful crowd here to see them today and the cheering was incredible.”

And from large to little, six Dartmoor hill ponies went to post for the 6f race (pictured below), and it was Frolic who won with owner Rachael Watson.

“My plan was to stay close in the race and keep something in the tank for the finish,” said 20-year-old Rachael who farms with her parents near Poundsgate.

The ponies were part of the Hill Pony Display Team which showcases at events and and fairs.

Charlotte Faulker of the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association said: “This is the first time we’ve done this and they were brilliant. I am so proud of them all, and their riders who were all very excited about taking part in a race at Exeter racecourse.”

More than £1,500 was raised for the Devon Air Ambulance on the day.

“We have managed to get sponsors for all the classes who have paid for the rosettes, which means every single penny will go to EGSF. The more entries we can get the better.”

Lorraine added that it means a lot to raise money and support for EGSF, and to host the show in memory of Scottie.

“The people at EGSF have become friends, even though it was eight years ago that Scottie had grass sickness. It is such an awful disease and nothing is too much trouble for them, they give so much support to people – and we all want the same goal,” she said.

“Whether we will find a cure for grass sickness or not I don’t know, but we need to keep plugging away. Scottie was perfect, he was the kindest person, a huge gentle boy, and even though he’s not here anymore I’m trying to do our bit and give something back in his memory.”

“Although we are experienced with horses, caring for a Clydesdale has been a learning curve as big as him,” said his rehomer Nikky.

“Transport was a bit tricky due to his size, but we found an experienced transporter of Clydesdales to bring him home. We cannot thank World Horse Welfare enough for giving him a chance of life and entrusting us with his follow-on care.”

Seamus is the face of World Horse Welfare’s latest fundraising appeal.

“Previous donations helped make this rescue possible – so thank you from the bottom of my heart,” said Miss Ritson.

“It’s only thanks to donations that we are able to do this, and we desperately need to be there for so many more horses like Seamus. Any amount can be truly life-changing.”

The driver and his colleague, the latter played by Fred Dana, a real-life Budsweiser wholesaler of more than 34 years, load up the cart and the team of horses head out into the snow.

When the weather starts to close in, the bar’s yellow Labrador appears and escorts the horses the rest of the way.

“She’s exactly what you want to see in the breed. She fills the eye from nose to tail, she’s correct, has long, silky hair, beautiful action and just oozes breed character,” said Alistair.

The overall female reserve spot went to long-term breeder Ronnie Black’s nine-year-old Collessie Jennifer, shown by Ronnie’s son Peter.

“It’s been a fantastic show and a great advert for our rare breed,” said Peter.

“He loves being in the ring; he’s a showman. He likes people looking at him,” said Isla. “I didn’t come here with any expectations, I thought we’ll go and have a nice time and now here we are, supreme ridden. I’m over the moon, I couldn’t ask for any more.”

The stallion title went to Willow Way Swiper, who was also crowned the best rest-of-the-world-bred horse for Ron Brewster, John Anderson and Helen Carr. Paul and Matthew Bedford’s junior colt champion Thorpe Hill Quick Flash was named overall stallion reserve.

Father and son Paul and Matthew Bedford also took home the champion gelding honours and best European-bred horse, with Thorpe Hill Roy, by Colessie Proclaimer. The Tennant family’s West Forth Solo, by Muirton Sabre, was reserve champion gelding.

‘I’m sure Mum was watching over us’: amateur’s home-bred Clydesdale collects his first HOYS ticket

Sharon is an Inverness-based amateur and Hamish was co-bred by Sharon and her late mother, Aileen Campbell, who passed away in 2020.

“He qualified for HOYS almost two years to the day of Mum’s passing,” said Sharon. “This made the moment very poignant. My mother was always our biggest supporter, and she was always at the ringside cheering us on. I’m sure she was watching over us with pride when he qualified.

“When she died, I didn’t think I wanted to carry on showing, but now I’m so glad I did.”

Sharon competed Hamish’s dam, Westerton Rosie, at Blair some 18 years ago. Remarkably, Hamish is Sharon’s only foal. He was bred to contend the ridden circuit, though Sharon never believed he’d be a HOYS finalist.

“To qualify at a Scottish show was also a dream come true,” continued Sharon. “Hamish is a very versatile horse and he absolutely adores being out and about.

Sharon has decided that the World Clydesdale Show held in Aberdeen (20-23 October) will be Hamish’s final show.

“Never in a million years did I think we would be going to HOYS and it’s lovely that Hamish will be retiring in style,” she continued. “I am lucky enough to have a fantastic team of friends who will be coming down to HOYS to help and support us.

“HOYS prep is going well so far; everything is going to plan and I’m just keeping Hamish fit. We’ll be breaking the journey [across multiple days] as we’re travelling down from Inverness.”

Breed societies find ‘proactive’ solutions to overcome Brexit challenges

Clydesdale Horse Society secretary Ian Roy told H&H the creation of the daughter studbooks was a “positive and proactive solution”.

“We wanted to work around this because we did not want to lose the gene pool and the work of those overseas breeders who have for many generations worked hard to breed high-quality stock,” said a spokesman for the society.

“Having been advised that it would be kindest to put him to sleep, his distraught owner rang Redwings to see if the charity could offer Boo a last-minute reprieve and provide him with the specialist care he would need for the rest of his life,” said a spokesman for the charity.

“Thanks to the help of his field companion and ‘seeing eye’ horse Flynn, Boo was able to confidently explore his paddock and would even gallop to the fenceline when he heard his name – an impressive feat for a heavy horse who couldn’t see!”

Boo was put down just before Christmas when it was no longer possible to manage his lameness issues and the arthritis in his hind legs.

“The heartbreaking decision meant he would not face the debilitating discomfort his condition would have inevitably caused and he was put to sleep surrounded by the vet team and other members of Redwings staff who had lovingly cared for him for over a decade,” said the spokesman.

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress said the charity is “incredibly sad” to have said goodbye to Boo.

“For me, he summed up just what Redwings is about; providing lifelong specialist care to horses who otherwise would have nowhere else to turn, and through our heartache we take comfort that we were able to give him so many happy years,” she said.

“His story of courage inspired many and he was always so popular with visitors at our open days – and, of course, he lapped up every minute of attention, which was wonderful to see, especially for a horse that had survived such a terrible act of cruelty.”

Ms Cutress said to see Boo’s paddock empty feels “very strange”.
