Tickets are now on sale for London International Horse Show. An absolute highlight of the festive season, London International is synonymous with Christmas for equestrians.

Whether you’re heading to London’s Excel for the showjumping, showing, dressage or even just the shopping, here’s everything you need to know about the ticket options before you book.

London International Horse Show tickets

The show will run from Thursday 17 December to Monday 21 December 2026 and there are a range of tickets available across the week.

General entry

These tickets are the cheapest option and give you access to the shopping village and the free standing area for The New Horizons Plastics Arena. You also have the option upgrade to unreserved seating access for the morning session in the The New Horizons Plastics Arena.

Entry from 8am. Prices are the same for each day of the show.

Grandstand tickets

These tickets give you all-day access to the show, shopping village and Talk Horse Live Zone, unreserved seating in the New Horizons Plastics London Arena and a reserved seat in the International Arena during your chosen session.

Ticket prices vary throughout the week, depending on which session you attend and where you sit. There are four standard pricing tiers, plus two hospitality options and a limited view option.

Season tickets for access and a reserved seat on all five days are available for £852.95.

Meet and greet tickets

To manage high demand, the incredibly popular meet and greets at the Live Zone will be ticketed this year. Tickets will be free of charge and can be booked here by anyone with a general admission ticket. The line-up will be announced later in the year.

About London International Horse Show

The London International Horse Show feels quite settled into its new home at the Excel London in the Royal Docks area of Newham, East London, where it has been held since 2021.

London International signals the start of the festival period for equestrians and is the only UK show to host all three FEI World Cup qualifiers in dressage, showjumping and driving. It takes place from 17–21 December this year.

As well as the show’s traditional favourites, such as the Shetland Pony Grand National and the Christmas finale, the show also features top-class action from across the disciplines, including The London International Showing Series, supported by Horse & Hound.

There are also an array of shops located in the retail village and plenty of food and drink outlets for you to choose from.

Oh yes he did! Vets to the rescue as pantomime horse suffers respiratory and dental issues

All the best pantomimes have horses, villains and cross-dressing dames – not all have advice on equine dentistry, gags about turmeric and the chance to win £100 towards your vet bills.

But one production of Rapunzel, put on by RW Equine Vet at the Queen’s Hall Theatre in Cranbrook on 10 December, had all the above and more.

The independent East Sussex practice is run by husband and wife Reuben and Sarah Whittaker, who decided last year that their December client evening should run in panto style – and it went down so well, they did it again for 2025.

The production of Rapunzel, complete with plenty of audience participation, seamlessly interspersed the story of the long-haired heroine with talks from RW vets Barbara Portal and Gonçalo Seren. Both came to the rescue to inform the audience as they investigated Maximus the pantomime horse, aka practice manager Clare Young-Brown and vet nurse Katie Holloway, for his respiratory and dental issues.

“It was a really good event,” Sarah, who played Rapunzel, told H&H.

“Reuben and I didn’t really have time to rehearse so it was a bit stressful beforehand! But it was great fun and the whole team enjoyed it.”

More than 150 people enjoyed mulled wine, mince pies and prosecco, and a raffle with prizes such as £100 vet treatment vouchers raised £510 for East Sussex charity Brownbread Horse Rescue.

The production was a true family affair; Sarah played Rapunzel and Reuben – whose singing voice and flair for acting is surely wasted on a vet – her mother and the dashing hero Flynn Rider. Their 11-year-old twin sons Isaac and Arthur starred as robbers, Sarah’s sister Angela was the narrator and her parents Roger and Mandy served the prosecco.

Sarah thanked Penny Tobin of the Cranbrook Operatic and Dramatic Society for her help, which included adding sound effects for Maximus, and when Rapunzel gave her hero a wallop with a frying pan.

“We loved it,” Sarah said. “It’s really good for the whole team to get together, and we think it’s nice if client evenings aren’t just sitting in a village hall but are a bit of fun. And it’s a nice chance for people to catch up with like-minded friends, especially when so much is online these days, and talk to the vets.”

Sarah added that it takes about three months to recover from a pantomime, from “never again!” to “what can we do next?”

“We like to do things that are a bit of fun,” she said.

Reuben, who paid tribute to Sarah, Penny and his whole team, added that the idea “keeps getting bigger and bigger”, and that staff who were not involved last year were keen to be part of it this time.

“It’s going to be even bigger still next year,” he told H&H. “I don’t know what we’re going to do yet! Lucky us.”

How to ensure your horse is happy wearing fancy dress

Choose accessories you think your horse will cope well with. If your horse is sensitive to noise, the accessories with bells might worry them. However, if they’re used to wearing fly veils, a Christmas version could be the prefect addition.

Always try your outfit before your ride or competition to help desensitise your horse to their new festive accessories.

How we find the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday equestrian deals

We cover several sale events each year (such as Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day) and all the deals we share with you are found by members of the Horse & Hound team. This year, that includes me (Franchesca Slack), Georgia Guerin and Bethany Stone.

We are all riders and horse owners, and between us we have 27 years of experience writing about equestrian products for websites and magazines. Using our knowledge of the industry and popular brands that you love, we go on the hunt for the best deals – there’s no AI or guesswork here.

Where can I find the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday equestrian sales?

Many online equestrian retailers are running special offers in the run up to Black Friday, throughout the weekend and on Cyber Monday (Monday 1 December). We will be updating this page with the very best deals we can find, so rather than searching the internet to find the best bargains, come to us as we will have done the hard work for you.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday equestrian deals on Amazon

Amazon is one of the online kings of Black Friday, with fabulous discounts on offer. While you may not immediately think of Amazon for equestrian kit and clothing, it has a surprisingly extensive range so this could be an opportunity to grab some real bargains, particularly on supplements, outdoor clothing and equestrian electricals (such as stable cameras, head torches or solar lights).

Some really great products can actually be hard to find on Amazon – especially if they’re not equestrian specific, which also means they’re likely to be cheaper – and if you don’t know where to look, you might never find them. Luckily, we spend a lot of time tracking these products down on Amazon as part of our day-to-day work, so we’ll make sure you don’t miss out.

When Amazon kicks off its Black Friday deals for 2025 we will include the information here. In the meantime, here is a link to Amazon’s equestrian page.

Black Friday 2025 at your local tack shop

Of course the other option, that we would always support, is to shop local. A lot of local tack shops will be getting into the spirit of things with discounts of their own so why not pop by? While these Black Friday horse offers might not always be as big as those by the big online retailers, it does give you the opportunity to support a local business and take advantage of the fitting service and expertise that you can’t get from retailers located on the other side of a computer screen.

What is Black Friday?

For consumers and retailers in the UK, Black Friday is a recent phenomenon, but it has been going strong the United States for decades.

Black Friday is the first Friday after Thanksgiving and is traditionally seen as the start of the Christmas shopping season, with high street retailers opening their doors at the crack of dawn and offering big discounts for shoppers who have set their alarm clocks.

The rise of internet shopping has allowed the Black Friday tradition to spread throughout the world, and it hasn’t passed the equestrian world by either. From your local tack shop to massive online retailers, there will be great discounts to be had.

As a godmother and friend to many mums, I’m almost constantly looking for the best deals on gifts for horsey kids. I’m pretty fussy about what I buy, too. ‘A better future for all horses’: welfare charity looks to 2025 with ‘hope, determination and commitment’

World Horse Welfare has reflected on a “monumental year” as it looks ahead to 2025 with “hope, determination and commitment”.

In World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers’ annual Christmas message he reflected on the charity’s work during 2024, and shared a positive update on the “Dover 26” – the group of horses and ponies rescued from an overloaded transporter in Kent in February.

“It’s been an incredibly busy and sometimes challenging year for us here at World Horse Welfare. But ultimately it’s been a hugely monumental one,” said Mr Owers.

“In May Britain’s bill to ban the live exports to slaughter finally became law, a huge milestone and a defining moment in our nearly century-long and founding campaign.

“Alongside the banning of the legal movement of horses to slaughter, I’m delighted to say that several of the illegally smuggled horses, known as the Dover 26, have now found loving new homes and the rest, are making great progress.”

Mr Owers added that while the group’s story was “tough to hear”, their “legacy has been profound” in enabling the charity to highlight this terrible trade and to call for better legislation to protect vulnerable horses.

“With the invaluable support of our friends; fellow charities, experts, and advocates, we’ve continued to drive forward Ada Cole’s mission to be the horses’ voice,” he said.

“To put it simply, none of this would have been possible without you – our extraordinary supporters. Once again we want to say a massive thank you, for enabling us to do the work that needs to be done to ensure we work towards a world where every horse is treated with respect, compassion and understanding.”

Mr Owers said as the charity reflects on the year, it is reminded of Ada’s final words, “The work must go on”.

“There is still much to do but we’re looking forward to facing 2025 with hope, determination and commitment to creating a better future for all horses,” he said.

“For now, from us all here at World Horse Welfare two-legged and four, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happiest of new years.”

‘Handle with care’: Christmas message stresses the need to care for horses properly

“Handle with care” is the 2024 Christmas message from Brooke, in an animation of the same name aimed at raising awareness of treating horses properly.

The film, with voiceover from actress Annette Badland, tells the true story of Caballito, a horse in Nicaragua who had been mistreated, and whose new owner Ismelda shows him how to trust people again.

“Millions of working animals, and even our pets, can experience poor handling by humans, leading to anxiety, fear and life-long trauma,” a spokesperson for the welfare charity said.

“Ismelda decided to sign up to training provided by Brooke and its partner Biometepe, which works to improve animal welfare where she lives on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua.

“Thanks to Brooke, Ismela learnt how to communicate with Caballito and understand what he was trying to tell her, even building a feeding station to keep him well nourished. With time, Caballito was able to trust Ismela and they now share an inseparable bond.”

In the animation, Caballito is played by Harry the horse, a character from Brooke’s previous animation series.

Annette Badland said: “I’m so proud to have been part of Brooke’s animation this year, which highlights the importance of giving working animals the love and respect they deserve.

“Working animals, just like all animals, do so much for humans and handling them with compassion helps give them a life worth living.”

Ismelda added that she has learned a great deal about handling and caring for her horses.

“They come to trust you, just like you trust them,” she said.

Tiny foals born to rescued mothers take centre stage this Christmas

Two donkey foals born to rescued jennies are taking centre stage at World Horse Welfare as the charity’s Christmas campaign stars.

Mia and her foal Peanut, and Molly and her baby Popcorn, have already experienced a seasonal snowfall at World Horse Welfare’s Belwade Farm, where they have had attention from charity patron and social media influencer Esme Higgs.

“Donkeys are clever, loving, and full of personality but they need special care,” Esme said.

“I met the gorgeous Peanut and Popcorn and their rescued mums Mia and Molly, on a recent visit to Belwade Farm, and it was wonderful to see they are getting the support they deserve and learning to trust humans. This season, your help can make all the difference to these amazing animals.”

The farm’s manager Eileen Gillen said the charity was delighted to be able to share pictures of its two donkeys.

“In this case, and thanks to our supporters enabling us to be there for them, Mia and Molly are doing well here at Belwade and were able to give birth to beautiful, healthy foals,” she said.

A spokesperson for the charity said that although donkeys may appeal as pets, their needs are often misunderstood, which can cause welfare issues.

“Although they are like horses in that they like to live in a herd, donkeys also need to pair-bond with another donkey – this behaviour is instinctive and essential to their wellbeing,” the spokesperson said..

“Separating bonded pairs causes them a lot of stress and donkeys who have lost a mate can literally die from a broken heart – as the effect of this stress on their health can lead to a condition called hyperlipaemia, which can be fatal.”

Shelter is very important as donkeys’ coats are not waterproof as horses’ are, and they need a specific diet and daily enrichment activities. Foot care can also be an issue as they do not cope well with the wet UK climate.

“As far as understanding their care goes, it’s important to consider how different they are to horses as they are very good at masking their pain as a survival mechanism,” Ms Gillen said.

“This can lead to them not receiving the care they need at the right time, as the signs of ill health can be easily missed.

“While we don’t take many donkeys in at World Horse Welfare, when we do the reasons are usually the same. Rather than deliberate neglect it tends to be more down to a lack of understanding and knowledge on behalf of those responsible for their care.”

Oh, baubles! Donkeys choose – and tuck into – their favourite Christmas decorations

Deck the walls with boughs of holly – and then tuck into them!

That’s almost what the residents of The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth have been up to in the approach to Christmas, enjoying tasty wreaths, garlands and baubles.

Volunteers at the Donkey Assisted Activities Centre (DAAC) and staff used a mix of donkey-friendly willow, hazel and herbs to make the decorations, adding cut-up apples, parsnips, cucumber and carrots.

“Enrichment is very important for the resident donkeys and provides them with greater opportunities to interact with their environment, make choices and to be more mentally active,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Enrichment also prevents boredom while the increased exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight.

“The edible enrichment items provide the donkeys with an extra special treat, although as with all novel food sources, feeding in moderation and under supervision is key. Thanks to the staff and volunteers, the donkeys have the opportunity to try something new while exhibiting their natural behaviour.”

DACC assistant Stephy Studley told H&H it was not just the donkeys who had fun with the decorations; the volunteers and staff enjoyed making them too.

“As we hung them around the yard, we could see the donkeys watching us with anticipation,” she said. “Once we let them in, it was fascinating to see each donkey picking and choosing their favourite treats. It was such a lovely experience and brought joy to everyone involved, especially the donkeys.”

9 jobs worth tackling over the festive period to help you get ahead

Of course we’d encourage you to eat, drink and be very merry, but as the Christmas period is one of the few times most amateurs get an extended break from work, it might also be wise to schedule a few hours to complete some of those chores you’ve been putting off for a while.

Here are nine things you could do over the Christmas break to get your ducks in a row and storm into 2025 ready for success.

1. Tidy your tack room

A classic. As the year progresses it’s likely that your tack room has become a dumping ground for anything and everything, while the storage system you implemented last time you gave it a clear out has fallen by the wayside. Why not have a big sort out and get everything in order, so you can actually find that bit when you need it?

2. Service the lorry

Your horsebox may have been sitting around for a while, and when you do decide to venture out there would be nothing worse than being unable to start it. Make sure everything is in working order and all services are up to date. Once the exterior is all checked over and ready to go, give the inside a good spring clean as well as the horse area.

3. Clean your competition clothing

You’ve worn your jacket throughout the season, including for hours in sweltering summer heat, so now is the time to check it in for a deep clean at your local dry cleaners. Now is also a good time to give your boots a good clean, and ensure all your other competition kit is in working order and doesn’t need replacing.

4. Give your horse a tidy up

If you are someone who lets yourself — and your horses — go during winter, so make use of the daylight hours to give your horse a trim so he heads into the New Year as fresh as a daisy and ready for work.

5. Wash your rugs

Send them off to your local rug washer, use the facilities on your yard or you may be brave enough to put your own washing machine to the test (we don’t recommend this for anything heavier than an odd summer sheet). If you’re not sure where to start, check out our helpful guide to cleaning horse rugs. It’s also a good opportunity to fix any holes or tears, and decide if any need replacing.

6. Pay off outstanding bills

While there isn’t often much free cash floating around in the run up to Christmas, if you get any financial gifts on the day, they could help you go into the new season with a clean slate. If you can clear any outstanding vet, farrier or physio payments, then that will be a weight off your mind.

7. Plan your competition schedule

While some schedules won’t be out yet, many of the championship and major competition dates are already in the diary so you could take an hour or so to mark off select days you’ll need to book off from work, especially if you work shifts. Consider if you’ll need to book accommodation, too, and if you’ll need to ask a friend or relative to tag along as groom. The earlier you ask the better!

8. Join your governing bodies

Similarly, getting all your relevant paperwork in line to send off to the necessary organisations is something you could do while you have some spare time. Deciding which ones to join, gathering documents and filling in forms is the perfect task to do while sitting in front of a Christmas movie with a box of chocolates. Some societies may offer a discount if you join in January, so it’s the perfect job to tick off the list.

9. Make a training plan

Want to source a new trainer in the New Year? Make contact with the people you have in mind. Haven’t decided when to bring your horse back into work after his winter break? Pop a deadline in the diary. If you have certain aspirations in mind then it’s a good idea to draft some sort of plan, however brief, so you can achieve those goals. Dreams don’t work unless you do!

‘It lights up their day’: farrier Father Christmas and Shetland ‘reindeer’ delight children with hospital visit

Children in hospital were “mesmerised” by a visit from a farrier Father Christmas and a miniature “reindeer”.

Sam Dracott aka the big man joined Sarah Woodland of Dinky Ponies with mini Shetland Tinkerbell, sporting reindeer antlers, on the children’s ward at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Sam, who has over six million followers on social media and usually stars in shoeing and trimming videos, said: “It was a total honour to be able to make so many unwell children smile on this special morning. When we came up with the idea we weren’t sure we would be allowed to do it, but then we met Sarah and the team, the stars aligned.

“I’ve never dressed up as Santa before, but seeing the look on the children’s faces has given me a new love for all things Father Christmas. I would love to do it all again.”

Sarah was on hand throughout to ensure Tinkerbell was happy; Dinky Ponies is “dedicated to supporting mental health and wellness through the healing power of horses, visiting the elderly, children, and adults with physical, mental and learning difficulties, or those just in need of some extra happiness and positivity”.

“We are incredibly busy with visits, but we absolutely adore being able to bring joy to the children at Great Western Hospital,” Sarah said. “You can see how much it lights up their day and it makes all the hours of hard work looking after the ponies worthwhile.

“It’s a huge lifestyle commitment and both myself and Darcey (James) spend the majority of our time visiting as many people as we can. We are hoping to find some additional support in the future so we can visit more people in need.”

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Trust voluntary services organise visits as part of a “pets as therapy” scheme.

Voluntary services manager Vickie Hayes said: “The positivity they bring can be seen in almost every single interaction the animals have with our patients and our staff. We are very proud to have volunteers who wish to give their time to making a real difference to those who are most often in their lowest moments.

“Having Sarah bring her ponies to see us is always a privilege and we were especially thrilled to have Santa come along for this festive visit!”

Donkeys and top riders celebrate Christmas in special London carol service

Top equestrians Jane Holderness-Roddam and Gemma Stevens – and two donkeys – were among the special guests at Brooke’s Christmas carol service in London.

Broadcaster and Brooke patron Alastair Stewart and comedian Rory Bremner were also at the Guards’ Chapel in Westminster last night (12 December), to which guests were welcomed by donkeys Pixie and Kiska. The event marked the equine welfare charity’s 90th anniversary.

Mr Stewart said: “We [Brooke supporters] support Brooke because we care passionately about working animals.

“The progress Brooke has made globally on the evil donkey skin trade is a fantastic example of how we as human beings can really work together to benefit these animals.

“From all of us here at Brooke, a very happy Christmas to you, and to horses, donkeys and mules all over the world, a happy, safe and peaceful year to you all.”

Brooke was formed in 1934 by Dorothy Brooke, who set out to help the emaciated war horses who were abandoned in Egypt after the First World War.

How to choose the best Christmas jumpers for dogs

It’s fair to say that even the best dog Christmas jumpers are not practical purchases – you’re not after high-vis, waterproof or even thermal properties (although those are a bonus for thin-skinned dogs). We need to agree that this garment is more for the sake of the human than the pooch, but if it brings a bit of festive cheer, what’s the problem with that? Often, we’ll just pop it on our pet for quick photo and leave him au naturel for the rest of the day.

Just bear in mind that dogs don’t enjoy being laughed at, however comic they may look as a canine snowman. And certain fabrics, including wool and nylon, can irritate the skin or make the dog overheat, while poorly fitting jumpers may rub or cause discomfort. A cotton blend is the least irritating, and always monitor your dog to check he is comfortable. Don’t be tempted

There is always the temptation to sweep the scraps and leftovers off our plates and into the dog’s bowl, turkey scraps might contain cooked bones, which can cause internal damage or choking. And even those foods that aren’t highly dangerous may upset your dog’s digestion – for example, he probably won’t benefit from a yummy baked brie, and the high fat and salt content of pigs in blankets means they should be offered only sparingly as a treat. Fruits and vegetables are safer ground, but be aware that stuffing contains onions.

How we chose the best Christmas dinners for dogs

It’s all a bit of fun, a festive dog’s dinner. As dogs should be following a routine diet, and any changes should be made gradually, we wouldn’t advise suddenly swapping to a new food for Christmas Day. However, if the ingredients are along similar lines to his usual diet, let your pooch enjoy his own version of turkey and trimmings! Turkey is typically an excellent protein source, being lean and easily digestible. Many of the fruits and veg typically eaten for Christmas dinner are packed with antioxidants and vitamins – such as cranberries and carrots. We picked products from well-reputed dog food companies using natural ingredients.

What can I give my dog for Christmas dinner?

Many of the Christmas dinner ingredients, on their own, are fine for dogs to eat in moderation, such as turkey, carrots, cranberries and parsnips. However, you should not make sudden changes to your dog’s diet. Also bear in mind that the food you have cooked for your human company is likely to include ingredients such as onion, garlic, salt and spices (for example, in stuffing) which could be toxic to your dog. For this reason, never give your dogs scraps from the Christmas dinner table. Far better to chose a meal specifically put together and safety-checked for dogs, such as one of the products listed above.

As for Christmas puddings, this is a no-go area. In traditional Christmas puddings and mince pies, the raisins and other vine fruits are highly toxic to dogs and can be fatal, as well as the alcohol used in the cooking process. Chocolate logs and the like are equally poisonous – the theobromine found in chocolate (the darker the more toxic) can kill your dog.

Is Christmas stressful for dogs?

The disruption to routine, the visitors, children, music and decorations can all cause a dog anxiety. They don’t know it’s Christmastime – although they’ll sense something’s up with all the upheaval that goes on in most homes.

Try as hard as you can to stick to your dog’s routine – with walks, feeding and bedtime.
If you have visitors, introduce them carefully and quietly so your dog can meet them at their own pace.
Make sure your dogs has a haven to which they can escape, chill and rest.
Don’t forget about them! Although it’s a busy time, your dog will still need walks, interaction and love.
If you’re going out for Christmas lunch, don’t leave your dog alone for too long. If you can take your dog with you, bring a familiar item such as blanket to help him settle in.

How we chose the best festive treats for dogs

The priority with any of the selected treats is that they are dog-safe. Human treats are not appropriate for dogs and can even be toxic.

As we all know, to paraphrase the Dog’s Trust slogan of nearly half a century ago, “a dog is not just for Christmas” – and nor is Christmas particularly for dogs. They don’t know why we’re all dressing up, messing up their routines, eating constant feasts and dangling tantalisingly baubles on indoor trees. Let’s face it, festive treats are really for us, not the dogs! For this reason, we’ve picked several treats that look festive and celebratory. For those who love a polaroid snap or an Instagram post of their pooch looking Christmassy, these are the ones for you. But we’ve also chosen treats that dogs will love, made with natural and delicious ingredients – albeit with a festive vibe. Everyone’s a Christmas winner.

Can my dog eat Christmas dinner leftovers?

According to the Kennel Club, in December, dogs are 75% more likely to see the vet for eating human food that is toxic to them, compared to other months. The bottom line is that Christmas food is largely a no-go area. The main festive culprits are chocolate, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies. Vine fruits are poisonous for canines. But it doesn’t stop there. Blue cheese, certain nuts, stuffing (garlic and onion are toxic), as well as generally fatty and salty foods which are bad for their digestion. You may think you’re just letting them lick the plates with a few scraps and gravy, but there are likely to be harmful ingredients such as cooked bones or onion and we simply don’t know how much is toxic. Alas, some of these foods can cause stomach upset at best, and be lethal at worst. It’s not worth the risk. Many foods safe for human consumption are harmful to dogs.

Something non-toxic such as boiled sprouts (and where’s the festive fun in that?) can still cause digestive upset if the dog eats too many and he is not used to them. Even potatoes are complicated – plainly cooked they can be tolerated in moderation, but they are not safe raw or boiled, or roasted in fats and spices. Sweet potatoes are a better option.

Overall, your dog is more likely to enjoy a happy Christmas dinner by sticking to his own tried and tested canine-specific diet.

What do I do if my dog eats chocolate?

Call your vet straight away. If it’s out of hours – Christmas time tends to be – you still need to seek immediate veterinary attention. Symptoms normally show up between four and 24 hours after ingestion. The vet will want to know how much the dog has eaten and when, and the type of chocolate. Even if the dog is not showing any signs – which may be sickness, stomach upset, over-excitability, increased heart rate, twitching, fitting or tremors – the vet may still want to assess and treat the dog. The usual treatment is to make the dog vomit; they may also wash out the stomach and feed activated charcoal to absorb any remaining theobromine. Severe cases may require a drip, and medication to control heart rate, seizures and blood pressure.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs due to the chemical theobromine which can over stimulate their heart (and other muscles), and can be fatal. How much chocolate is poisonous depends on a number of things, from the size of dog, to how much they’ve eaten, to the type of chocolate. Dark chocolate and more expensive chocolates tend to be more toxic as they have a higher theobromine content. Sugar-free content is doubly bad as it contains the sweetener xylitol which is toxic, potentially causing hypoglycaemia and liver failure.

Give riders the real deal – not ‘a false sense of security’ – this Christmas

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) is warning against buying unfitted safety equipment as Christmas presents.

BETA said that although riding hats and body protectors make “truly excellent” gifts, “it’s important that they’re fitted to the individual to ensure they do the best job they can”.

“Helping keep a loved one safe while they ride is the best gift, but we want to ensure that for everyone gifting a hat or body protector this year, it’s fitted properly to ensure comfort and performance day in, day out,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams.

“This might mean a little creativity when it comes to what’s wrapped under the tree, and then a great excuse to hit your local tack shop after the big day and find the perfect product.”

BETA suggests giving vouchers instead of the items, and putting it in a wrapped hat box under the tree, or giving a silk or old hat with the voucher attached.

“We know people want something under the tree to give, but ill-fitting hats are uncomfortable and potentially dangerous, and ill-fitting body protectors can even hinder riding,” said Ms Williams.

BETA is also urging people not to buy second-hand safety equipment as presents.

“All safety kit has a life span and needs to be replaced at least every five years depending on wear and care, and whenever a hat sustains an impact, it needs to be replaced too as it can no longer do its job,” Ms Williams said.

“When you buy second-hand, you don’t know how it has been cared for, how often it’s been used, or if it’s been fallen on. This can give people a false sense of security, and no one wants to receive that under the tree this Christmas!”

For consumers and retailers in the UK, Black Friday is a relatively recent phenomenon, but it has been going strong the US for decades.

Black Friday is the first Friday after Thanksgiving and is traditionally seen as the start of the Christmas shopping season, with high street retailers opening their doors at the crack of dawn and offering big discounts for shoppers who have set their alarm clocks.

Everyone loves a Christmas wreath – and equine residents of The Donkey Sanctuary’s centres across the country are no different.

Staff at the charity’s regional centres, as well as its main base in Sidmouth, Devon, have been creating some “festive enrichment” for their equine residents.

Most people may boringly hang their Christmas wreaths on their front doors – but the donkeys enjoyed tucking in to theirs.

“Donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary have been enjoying some festive enrichment this week, munching on some specially made Christmas wreaths,” a spokesman for the charity said.

“The garlands were carefully crafted by staff at the sanctuary, using willow, herbs and selected pieces of cut-up fruit and vegetables.”

The spokesman added that enrichment is a very important part of life for all the charity’s resident donkeys, and it “provides them with greater opportunities to interact with their environment, make choices and to be more mentally active”.

Enrichment also prevents boredom, he said, and the increased exercise helps the donkeys maintain a healthy weight.

“The garlands provide the donkeys with an extra-special treat, although as with all novel food sources, feeding in moderation and under supervision is key,” the spokesman said.

“And thanks to their grooms, the resident donkeys have the opportunity to try something new while exhibiting their natural behaviour.”

If reality and funds weren’t an issue, what would you like to find under the Christmas tree? With many horse owners and riders needing the practical things in life – wellies, coats, gloves…. and can you ever have too many socks(?!), we asked what riders, grooms and influencers really, REALLY, want to receive this year. Let’s just say, Santa and his merry crew have got their work cut out…

All-round equestrian legend, Lucinda Green MBE is currently in New Zealand, and her wish would certainly help with transport: “An electric plane that takes off and lands vertically so no runway is needed.”

Speaking of ways to improve travel, international dressage rider, Lara Butler, has a different wish: “My ultimate Christmas present would be a money tree, but failing that, a teleportation device that can get you and your horse to and from a show… no more sitting in traffic!”

Fellow international dressage rider, Becky Moody, shares a similar idea: “I’d like to be able to teleport and to suddenly love getting up at 6am instead of wanting to hit snooze a record number of times!”

Irish international dressage rider, Abi Lyle, has a practical want: “For the keyboard warriors to realise they are doing more harm than good to our beautiful sport and let social media be a more positive place.”

With dressage in mind, H&H Awards’ Inspiration of the Year, Dylan Ward, has come up with a great gift and new invention: “I’d like a dressage sat nav! Either one with a screen that could go between the horse’s ears or some kind of projector that would show me where to go to stop me going wrong in dressage tests.” We think Dylan is onto something…

International dressage rider and Olympic gold medallist, Laura Tomlinson: “I wish that chocolate biscuits and alcohol could be the new found superfoods, and that ‘eating the rainbow’ meant eating the whole way around a Family Circle box of biscuits.”

Australian international event rider, Lissa Green, is also on board with nutritious food: “Apart from the obvious of wishing no war or suffering, I’d love a machine that made all sweets/chocolate/crisps highly nutritious.”

Keeping on the chocolate theme, super groom Alan Davies is all about the chocolate: “How about a chocolate factory? I would run it and be chief tester!”

Showjumper, breeder and trainer, Jay Halim, has gone a bit more practical for his Christmas wish: “In my wildest dreams, I would love for my farm to be completely redeveloped. I purchased my place eight years ago and it’s lovely and has lots of potential, but eight years on, it seems like not much has happened, so a magic wand would be great. I have all the ideas but am lacking the funds and the know how! It would remove so much weight of my shoulders and I would be able to concentrate more on just riding. If there could be a few championship horses put in the stables and my mortgage paid off as well, I would promise to be good forever!”

Para dressage rider and commentator Natasha Baker OBE has a list of three wishes that any horse owner and mum can relate to: “I’d like my own little temperature-controlled bubble so I don’t get cold in the winter, mud that doesn’t get the horses filthy, and a baby that sleeps through the night!”. We hear you, Natasha!

With the clean theme in mind, Adam Short, groom for Tom McEwen has a couple of requests Mrs Hinch would be proud of: “I would love a lorry that you don’t have to clean, because that is the worst job. Or a fairy that would clean the lorry for you!”

Social media influencer Esme Higgs aka ThisEsme would like two very relatable presents: “I’d love an invisible force shield that can protect my horse, Joey, against any more accidental injuries while in the field – that would be amazing. Failing that, I’d like fields that don’t get muddy in winter. If you could fit that under the Christmas tree, it would be very much appreciated.”

Eventer and showjumper Gemma Stevens, has gone down a practical route too: “I definitely want an indoor school please. So, if the fairy godmother could wave her lovely magic wand and sort that out for me, that would be fabulous. I’m fed up of getting wet pants!”

Jess Errington, groom to international event rider Harry Meade, has two brilliant wishes: “Under the tree I would like to find an invite for the Prince of Wales to come and meet the horse that was named after him (Watervalley Royal Guy – known as Willy to his friends!) as he’s one of my favourite young horses. I would also like to find some elves to make sure my lorry is packed, and my horses are plaited and looking smart ready to go to an event the next day.”

Francesca Gorni, freelance international groom to multiple British team riders including Charlotte Dujardin, Oliver Townend and Laura Collett among others has asked for Santa to take this one step further: “Horses that can pack their own travel bags!”

Dressage rider Rebecca Hughes says “I’d like a speaking horse, but I might live to regret that!”, while her husband Gareth would love a “flying Harley Davison” and their daughter Ruby would like “to never grow up, as I’m having too much fun right now”.

And last but not least, horse trainer and performer, Ben Atkinson, may have hit on a brilliant concept: “My dream Christmas gift would be a set of telepathic translation headphones so I could simply speak to my horses to find out which would like each job in the show, to explain the concept of a muck heap being their bathroom to remove the need for mucking out, and to ask their opinions on the most pressing topics of the equine industry today.”

This year’s is the fifth to feature a calendar on the front cover, beautifully illustrated by Olga Demidova, and it is in the shops – and will be arriving at subscribers’ homes – from today (23 November).

“I very much hope you enjoy this week’s front cover, which saves you a purchase at this most costly time of year since it doubles as an actual Advent calendar,” said H&H editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins.

“We’re still working on producing one with chocolates – or better yet horse treats – behind every door, but in the meantime I hope you love Olga Demidova’s charming illustrations as much as we do, and there’s a treat in the form of amusement or inspiration behind every door.”

Shetland ponies and friends help Father Christmas in heart-warming festive video

Father Christmas has called upon two Shetland ponies and their merry gang of friends to help make his deliveries this year.

The tale unfolds in Devon-based trainer and film-maker Emma Massingale’s latest video, in partnership with NAF, starring everyone’s favourite actors, Albert and Ernie. When Dalmatian Nancy takes an important call from Father Christmas, she rounds up Albert and Ernie, and the group can be seen boarding a double-decker bus as they head off on their latest mission. The film also features Comet the Connemara, donkey Charlie, Douglas the Hungarian vizsla, Siamese cat Louis, part-bred percheron Max, and puppies Pippin and Luna, a miniature dachshund and a labrador.

Emma Massingale, who is known for her heart-warming Christmas films, said coming up with this year’s idea was a bit harder than in some years.

“There’s been a lot of doom and gloom on the news and a lot of the Christmas adverts on the television have gone down the more political route. I thought, ‘What are we going to do to make something a bit different when it’s not feeling very Christmassy yet?’” Emma told H&H.

“I decided just to tell a story and when you come up with a story you can put the different components in. I started with a skeleton idea, and then I started thinking about the different tricks I might like to do. You’re trying to include as many tricks as you can, but at the same time make it look natural and there has to be a bit of humour too.”

And it is not just the actors Emma has to think about, it is props too. While trying to stay warm one of the ponies turns on the outdoor heater, causing a Christmas tree to dry up and lose its pine needles. Meanwhile the other pony goes off to seek out their best Christmas jumpers. The gang help gather the presents for Father Christmas and he can be seen heading off to start his deliveries.

“I spent about four hours plucking a Christmas tree, and then I had the needles in my oven for six hours trying to get them the right colour. Everything we ate for days afterwards tasted of pine needles!,” said Emma.

“We also have to consider the locations, for example doors need to be right for the ponies opening them. We don’t get to practise at the location before filming so I do all the training at home, and then we go and film. But we always joke that Albert and Ernie are the masters of one-take wonders, they know their job so well. The dogs are definitely a newer thing for me, but it’s great – they can do different things from the horses, so it ties in really well when telling a story.”

The video was filmed at Powderham Castle, a remote cottage on Bodmin Moor, and South Devon railway station.

“It’s really nice to be at Powderham Castle, I used to event there when it held horse trials and it’s a great location,” said Emma.

“It was quite funny getting to the cottage on the moor; it has no drive and you could only get to it by an off-road Land Rover. My fiancé Jeremy took the Land Rover with the filming equipment, and I had to tread across the moor with two ponies and four dogs.

“A man checking his cows spotted me and rode across on horseback to check I wasn’t dumping the ponies there, but he took one look at them in their lycra suits to keep them clean and said ‘Perhaps not!’”.

“I just love it when you see something and it makes you smile, or inspires you in some way. I think that’s the joy of Christmas.”

‘Without a word, he taught me everything’: truck driver pays tribute to rescue horse with Christmas work

A truck driver will spend his Christmas Day caring for 300 rescue horses and ponies as a “way of saying thank you” to the horse who taught him “the greatest lessons in life”.

Will Gee has been volunteering with Bransby Horses since 2017.

“There was a horse called Denzel in my village who had lived in a field near my house for about 10 years. There were a few problems with him and eventually I called the Bransby welfare hotline,” said Will.

“Another villager was feeding him and this caused Denzel to gain so much weight that he developed laminitis.”

A member of the Bransby team visited Denzel and he was taken into the care of the charity, where Will continued to visit him.

“I could see how much happier he was there and after a while I asked if I could help out. After a few weeks of training I was able to start volunteering on one of the yards,” said Will.

“I muck out the stables and help with the daily checks once a week. I’ll be there on Christmas Day and we will all have Christmas dinner together at Bransby’s cafe. It’s great really, I live on my own and my family don’t live nearby, so I really love being at Bransby at this time of the year.

“If it hadn’t been for Denzel I would never have found the charity or become involved in volunteering for them. Without saying a word, Denzel taught me everything about what is important in life.”

A Bransby spokesman said Denzel lived at Bransby for many years, but he has since died. The spokesman added that the impact Denzel had on Will “will last a lifetime”.

“The plight of horses is overlooked far too easily. I feel like people don’t always see their struggles in the same way they do for cats and dogs,” said Will.

“I hope more people visit or support Bransby Horses and see for themselves what amazing animals they are.”

Heaven for horses: Household Cavalry and King’s Troop mounts buck, roll and gallop on Christmas holidays

Many soldiers will be on duty over Christmas this year – but most of the Army’s horses are enjoying a “long restorative break in the English countryside”.

Hundreds of horses from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery have been sent to enjoy a month’s holiday in fields over Christmas.

The horses’ shoes have been taken off and they have been taken out of town for some “horse heaven”.

“In the coming weeks they’ll have the time of their lives, getting as muddy as possible and fat on grass, and relaxing,” an Army spokesman told H&H.

“It has been an unprecedented year for the soldiers and horses in London. Millions joined the Household Division as they trooped the colour on the Platinum Jubilee weekend and over 4 billion people across the world tuned in to see those same troops honour Her Majesty one last time on her funeral procession. Since then, the Army has supported the first state visit to the UK since the Covid pandemic, The King’s birthday, and a series of high-profile defence diplomacy events.”

The Army has shared picture of the military horses bucking, galloping, rolling and relaxing in herds.

Trooper Bridges from The Blues and Royals will be on duty, but knows how important the rest is for the horses, who are enjoying their time away.

“Our military working horses have worked so hard this year with an unprecedented series of ceremonial events; from the Platinum Jubilee to The Queen’s funeral, The King’s birthday and the South African state visit,” he said.

“They really do deserve a festive break.”

The greatest gift: showing love to horses and being loved in return

If horses, ponies and donkeys are shown love, they will love in return.

This is the message from this year’s short Christmas animation released by Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys.

The film, titled The Greatest Gift, features the Dinky Donkey character who starred in the charity’s 2021 animation The Little Christmas Helper, joined by two equine friends, Harry the horse and Molly the mule.

It shows the three equids as Christmas tree ornaments, thrown to the floor when the festivities are over. One is put in a bin, another swept into a corner and the third thrown in a drawer.

But a child picks them up, mends them and puts them in pride of place on the windowsill, where the seasons change behind them and Christmas approaches again. Then the horse, donkey and mule repay the child’s kindness.

“To love an animal and feel loved in return can mean the world to us,” says Dragons’ Den star and Brooke supporter Deborah Meaden in a voiceover. “This Christmas, help Brooke heal broken bodies and broken hearts.”

A spokesman for the charity said the aim of the video is to “highlight the importance of the relationship we have with animals, and how building strong bonds help heal the bodies and hearts of working horses and donkeys around the world”.

Deborah, who visited one of Brooke’s projects in India in 2013, added: “I was very pleased to support Brooke again in recording a voiceover for this Christmas animation.

Christmas magic about to start as top horses arrive in London

There are only a few days left until the start of the 2022 London International Horse Show (15-19 December) – and there are still some tickets available if you’d like to be there.

The organising team is set up at the ExCeL, the venue to which the event moved from its previous home at Olympia last year, and the grand prix dressage horses have arrived.

The Garde Republicaine and the Devil’s Horsemen are also on site and rehearsals have started today (13 December).

Some performances have sold out, or are close to it, but there are still tickets available for Thursday afternoon – and a few for the evening performance that day, which features the puissance. Some are still available for Friday, Saturday evening, Sunday evening, which features the return of the fancy dress relay, and Monday evening for the grand prix.

“This year’s London International Horse Show is looking very good,” show director Simon Brooks-Ward told H&H.

“Having got one year at ExCeL under our belt we’ve made a few changes which I think will give the visitor an even better experience. The shopping village has grown in size, we’ve injected a bit of Christmas magic and are creating a true party atmosphere.

“From world-class competition to breathtaking displays and the return of the fancy dress class and the Markel jockeys’ jumping in aid of The Injured Jockeys Fund, it’s all adding up to be a great show.”

Train strikes are due to run on 16 and 17 December but the Docklands Light Railway and Elizabeth Line will still be running, although visitors should check timetables. There are more than 2,000 parking spaces at the ExCeL for those who want to drive, and river travel is also an option, to North Greenwich Pier, from which a cable car runs to within walking distance of the venue.

This week’s edition of H&H (24 November) has one of our favourite covers of the year – it’s an actual Advent calendar.

The Advent cover has been popular for the past three years, and the 2022 edition has something extra.

“This year, to give you something else to contemplate on a chilly December evening, we’ve added a quiz element to the cover for the first time,” said H&H editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins.

“Behind each numbered door, you will find a beautiful letter and a clue. Each letter is part of an anagram and the clues will help guide you to the answer.”

This week’s magazine also includes suggestions on how to enjoy a particularly merry equestrian Christmas, as well as the return of our popular Legends feature and an interview with eventing world number one Tim Price, plus much more, behind the 24 Advent doors.

“We hope you enjoy using this cover as much as we have enjoyed bringing it together,” Sarah said. “Thanks, too, to artist Daniel Crane for allowing us to use this atmospheric original sketch for our festive cover image.”

The special edition is in shops now, as well as dropping through subscribers’ doors, and will be on sale until next Wednesday, 30 November, in time to open the first door. Individual copies can be ordered online if your local stockist has sold out.

Readers can also look forward to more festive special H&H editions: the Christmas special on 15 December and the bumper festive quiz on 29 December, as well as our popular reader special, also out on 29 December. The annual review of the year edition is out on 8 December.

Watch first glimpse of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse adaptation for TV

Eagle-eyed Charlie Mackesy fans will have caught the first glimpses of the author and illustrator’s hotly anticipated adaptation of his best-selling book, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.

The heartwarming story follows an unlikely friendship between a boy, a mole, a fox and a horse as they travel together in the boy’s search for home.

It has been adapted for the small screen and will debut on BBC One, iPlayer and Apple TV+ worldwide this Christmas.

Followers of Charlie’s social media accounts have been treated to an early taste of what they can expect from the film.

The soundless short clips show beautiful snapshots, including the moment the boy, the mole and the fox first meet the horse.

They also feature a clip of the four galloping across the snowy landscape, the horse gently lifting the boy out of water and carefully placing him on the snow, and the fox saving the mole as they cross a fast-flowing river.

A new hardback book, featuring Charlie’s illustrations alongside a hand-written script that celebrates the work of more than 100 animators involved across the two years of production, will be released on 22 November and is available to pre-order.

On the announcement of the adaptation, Charlie, who co-directed the film with Peter Baynton, said it is “so moving to think the story will be watched at Christmas”.

“I really hope it brings a bit of joy, laughter and comfort,” he added.

Although the short clips Charlie has shared have no sound, the finished film will. Tom Hollander is confirmed as the voice of the mole, Idris Elba the fox, Gabriel Byrne the horse and Jude Coward the boy. Isobel Waller-Bridge has composed an original score, which is performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and conducted by Geoff Alexander.

The Matthew Freud production is produced by Cara Speller, of Nonemore Productions, and J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella of Bad Robot Productions. It has been adapted from the book in collaboration with Jon Croker.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the first Friday after Thanksgiving and is traditionally seen as the start of the Christmas shopping season, with high street retailers opening their doors at the crack of dawn and offering big discounts for shoppers who have set their alarm clocks.
