A stewards’ enquiry, a human athlete and enthusiastic puppies star at hound racing event

A stewards’ enquiry, runners taking their own line – led over fences by a human athlete – and much Prosecco featured on the Cheshire Hunt’s hound racing afternoon.

Crowds gathered at the Cheshire’s kennels on 13 October to cheer on 54 hounds in nine races organised by the Cheshire Hunt Supporters, huntsman Robert Truscott and his partner Rebecca Connor, and whipper-in Huw Foulkes-Humphreys.

“The clerk of the course had inspected the going on the right-handed track and declared it good to soft,” hunt member Rachel Cooke told H&H. “Race-goers gathered around the parade ring to discuss the market movers, the favourites and the outsiders.”

Rachel said the hounds were loaded into the “starting gates”, aka the old hound trailer.

“The starter’s flag went down and the huntsman blew his horn, then ran in front of them, calling them on with his horn,” she said. “Undoubtedly the huntsman was at the heart of the sport leaping over the gated fence in every race.”

The first two races on the card were the bitch and dog hound puppies, aged six to eight months.

“These caused much amusement with a few refusing to start and a couple taking their own line,” Rachel said. “A stewards’ enquiry was opened and adjourned as there were no objections.

“The bookies became more competitive as the race card progressed. Final declarations were submitted for two divisions of second and third season dogs and bitches, mixed third season and above, two divisions of the open bitch race and finally the veterans’ race. Postman took the fastest dog hound of the day and Bloomer the fastest bitch hound.”

The winning sponsors were each given a bottle of Prosecco, a rosette and a photograph with the winning hound, after which spectators took full advantage of the bar and barbecue, and children tried out the course themselves.

“The afternoon was described by a hunt supporter as ‘a truly great old-fashioned country day out’,” Rachel said. “Thank you to everyone who helped and supported the day, raising funds for a new hound trailer.”

Outcry over shocking footage taken at Cheshire horse abattoir

Welfare charities and H&H readers have reacted with shock to undercover footage from Red Lion Abattoir in Cheshire that shows inhumane practices and cruelty to horses being slaughtered.

Footage shown on Sky News on Saturday (19 January), showed horses being hit with iron bars and groups of horses being crammed into pens before being stunned together — which is illegal in the UK.

In one of the most distressing incidents, a horse appears to come around as it hangs from the ceiling and seriously ill or injured horses are left to suffer rather than being dispatched promptly.

Only two abattoirs in the UK are licensed to slaughter horses — Red Lion Abattoir in Cheshire and Potter’s in Somerset.

Animal welfare group Hillside Animal Sanctuary fitted secret cameras at the Cheshire abattoir and passed the footage to Sky.

World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers said the practices they found were “disgusting, appalling and totally illegal”.

“What we have seen is a complete, systemic failure of the slaughterhouse to comply with UK welfare laws,” he said.

“We are now calling for all operations at these premises to be suspended until new procedures are put in place and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) guarantees the plant will comply with the law.”

A World Horse Welfare petition calling for CCTV in all UK slaughterhouses already has more than 16,000 signatures. Sign the petition.

And the British Horse Society’s chief executive Lynn Peterson said: “The treatment of these horses was barbaric, inhumane and frankly a downright disgrace in 21st Century Britain.”

The licences of two slaughtermen at the Red Lion Abattoir have been revoked by the FSA and they could be prosecuted.

In a statement to Sky, the abattoir said the incidents were “not the norm, but of an isolated nature” and they have taken disciplinary action against the person involved.

The statement continued: “In attendance at The Red Lion Abattoir are three full-time food standards officers comprising of an official veterinarian and full-time meat hygiene inspectors throughout production.

“Horses should individually enter the stunning area and most certainly not three at a time.

“However, small horses and ponies having spent years together as companions are difficult to separate. Horse lovers would understand that.”

The Red Lion Abattoir added that its meat was not part of the recent supermarket burger scandal.

Access to be reinstated for riders at Alderley Edge

The National Trust is creating a new riding route at Alderley Edge in Cheshire, and hopes it will be operational in the New Year.

Katherine Ryan, of the National Trust said: “We’ve had a number of requests over the years for riding to be reinstated on the Edge, and we’re now in a position to allow riders again, in a controlled manner.”

The route will only be accessible to licence holder and riders will also need to prove they have third-party insurance.

“Licensees will be expected to comply with a series of conditions and adhere to a code of conduct. The fees will directly assist the management of Alderley Edge,” said Ms Ryan.

Trophy named in memory of Coloured Horse and Pony Society steward

A trophy will be presented at Cheshire County Show (18-19 June 2013) in memory of Coloured Horse and Pony Society (CHAPS) life member and steward Philip Adshead.

Mr Adshead died suddenly in August. He was 65.

His partner Rebecca Bennett is collecting donations towards the trophy for the coloured in-hand championship.

Rider breaks back in fall at Cheshire Show

Ambulances were called to Cheshire Show twice on Tuesday, the organisers have confirmed.

The air ambulance took Amanda Peet, of Cockermouth, Cumbria, to Withenshaw Hospital after she was bucked off in the warm-up area at 7.20am.

A spokesman for the show said they heard later that she had suffered concussion and a broken hand.

And later the same day Amy Mitten, of Lower Peover, Cheshire had a fall in the large hack class.

Amy was rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital and following an X-ray and MRI scan it was confirmed she had broken her back.

Her mother Kathy said: “Amy is absolutely devastated as she has qualified all three of her horses for the Royal International and will be unable to compete which is very sad.”

A horse also died during the inter-hunt relay.

Cheshire Show horse death was a heart attack, say organisers

The horse that died in the inter-hunt relay at the Cheshire Show yesterday (20 June) suffered a heart attack, organiser Dave Harvey told H&H.

Former four-star eventer Benjamin Phipps, part of the Flint and Denbigh hunt team, was taking part in the semi-final when he died.

Vets confirmed that the 22-year-old horse had suffered a heart attack and died instantly, said Mr Harvey.

The advanced horse, formerly ridden by Eric Smiley and then Ian Olding, retired from eventing aged 15, and since had been hunted with the Flint and Denbigh by Richard Darch.

Mr Darch said: “He was my horse of a lifetime. A lot of tears have been shed but he would not have wanted to go any other way.

“We had jumped the first round and were flying along in the second. We came down to fence four and he never took off. About two strides out, I’m told, he suffered a heart attack.

“He knew his job so well and was fit and well – it could have happened at any time.”

Following news of the death, Mr Harvey said there had been some criticism of the show for not abandoning the competition.

“I think abandoning the class would have left a nasty taste in everybody’s mouth,” he said.

“I felt it was better for us to finish the relay with clapping and a winner.”

Mr Darch added: “I told Dave I didn’t want them to stop the class on my account.”

H&H is also investigating reports that a rider was seriously injured in the hack classes yesterday.

Horse death in inter-hunt relay at Cheshire Show

A horse died in the inter-hunt relay at the Cheshire Show today (20 June), the organisers have confirmed.

The horse stumbled during the competition, which took place in the main ring at lunchtime.

A spokesman for the organisers said she did not know whether the horse suffered a heart attack or if the fall had caused a fatal injury.

H&H was unable to ascertain the name of the rider and horse or hunt at this stage.

The rider was not injured, said the show spokesman.

Bolesworth creates £1.7m for county economy

Last year’s Bolesworth Showjumping Classic contributed more than £1.7 million to the Cheshire economy, a survey by Visit Chester and Cheshire has revealed.

More than £750,000 was spent on the Bolesworth show site itself by the 18,000 visitors to last year’s show.

The organisers of the show held at Bolesworth Castle, on the A41 between Chester and Whitchurch, says it is one fast becoming one of the UK’s most prestigious equestrian and country events.

Despite the tough economic climate, more than 60 traders will be at Bolesworth this year (9-12 June) — an increase of 40 per cent on last year.

Show organiser, Nina Barbour said: “At Bolesworth, we have always aimed to generate income for the local economy and we delighted that so many traders are heading for Bolesworth this year.”

The highlight of Bolesworth this year will be the Express Eventing qualifier (11 June), where 2011 Badminton champion, Mark Todd and former Badminton and Burghley winner, Oliver Townend will be in action.

On Sunday, (June 12) the Bolesworth Classic Grand Prix has prize money totalling £18,000. Past competitors include John Whitaker, Nick Skelton, Robert Smith, Michael Whitaker, Geoff Billington, Billy Twomey and Ellen Whitaker.

And The X Factor’s Ruth Lorenzo headlines the Bolesworth Big Night Out on Saturday night.

Loose horse killed in collision with car at 40mph

Police are appealling for witnesses after a loose horse was killed in a collision with a car in Warrington, Cheshire.

A couple, aged 45 and 48, were driving towards their home on Widnes Road in Cuerdley when the horse ran out in front of their car, on Thursday, 18 February.

Although the car flipped over onto its side, both escaped with minor injuries.

“We were travelling at about 40 miles per hour,” the driver, who did not want to be identified, told local papers. “The horse came straight across and there was no way we could have seen it.

“All the witnesses said there was no way we could have seen the horse – it just bolted straight out.”

Police were called to the scene at 3.50pm.

“We arrived on the scene ten minutes after being called, but by then the horse was already dead,” local police officers told H&H.

“The horse had escaped from nearby stables.”

Emergency services said that the couple, who were driving a VW Sharan, only avoided serious injury due to the size of their car.

“The whole incident has been very shocking for us,” the driver continued. “The most shocking thing to think about is that our children may have been without parents.”

Terrier stolen along with eight-horse lorry at hunt meet

A heart-broken woman is appealing for information after her 18-month-old Border terrier was stolen along with a eight-horse lorry from close to the meet of the Cheshire Forest hunt last Saturday (15 November).

Emma Buckles, head groom of a yard in Formby, left her dog Jasmin, or “Jazz”, in the Ford Cargo lorry while she and seven others joined the newcomers’ meet at Peover Hall near Knutsford. When they returned at 2pm the box had gone.

“One of the riders finished early and came back the box at 1.30pm, so we know it was still there then. But half an hour later it had disappeared,” she told H&H.

There was one horse on the box when it was stolen, Jackson, but he was recovered half a mile down the road at Goostrey.

Emma thinks he was dumped there by the thieves.

“I am absolutely devastated about Jasmin,” said Emma. “We have contacted all the animal charities and vets and put up posters everywhere but no-one has seen her.”

The eight-horse box has an aluminium flat-sided body and a white cab. The registration number is Y393 KBA.

Cheshire Show is expanding for 2007 by allocating extra space and adding more classes.

Last year, the show’s Gallagher Mitsubishi Light Horse section attracted more than 4,000 entries, and the expansion is a direct result.

Organisers have allocated another 30 acres to allow for bigger rings and have added

HOYS qualifiers for mountain and moorland working hunter ponies. The M&M lead-rein and first ridden classes will also be HOYS qualifiers.

Riding lessons on the curriculum

Horse riding and stable management lessons are now available to students at one Cheshire high school. The British Horse Society (BHS) is supporting the programme which offers equestrianism as an alternative to football and rugby. In accordance with the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) Strategy for the Horse Industry, the scheme makes riding available to those from less privileged backgrounds.

At the strategy’s launch in November Jim Knight, Minister for the Horse said: “If we can encourage education authorities to introduce young people to riding then I think we would start to break down the elitist image.”

The scheme at Weaverham High, Cheshire is funded by Sport England via BEF and is the result of careful planning by head teacher Paul Finlay, Carol Tommons, proprietor of Sandy Lane Equestrian and BHS North West Regional Development Officer Sarah Caplan. “There is a great deal of excitement at the school about this scheme,” says Finlay. “It offers a diversion from the usual sports played at schools, such as football and rugby and fits well with current government targets to increase the level of student participation in physical activities.”

If successful the scheme will be become a self-financing fixture in the curriculum at other schools across Britain. “It is a fantastic opportunity to introduce children to riding,” adds Kaplan. “Horse riding has been shown to have a very positive effect across all age groups both mentally and physically. It really is a sport for life.”
