Charlotte Dujardin throws fourth worlds spot wide open with stunning Hartpury double

Charlotte Dujardin and Brave Heart II put the cat among the pigeons in the pre-World Championships selection race, winning both the CDI3* grand prix and grand prix special at Hartpury, on 74.8% and 74.7% respectively – smashing their international personal bests in both tests.

The fourth British team spot for the worlds at Aachen has been the season’s big sub-plot. Selectors weigh grand prix scores most heavily, as this decides the team medals in Aachen – the special and freestyle, which determine individual medals, count too, but less.

Carl Hester on Fame, Lottie Fry on Glamourdale and Becky Moody on Jagerbomb have long looked nailed on for three of the four places, leaving one spot up for grabs.

Fiona Bigwood and Donna Bella had emerged as favourites on the back of the strongest form of the chasing pack, edging out Charlotte and Brave Heart in both of their head-to-heads this season: 73.13% to 72.8% at Hickstead CDI3* in May, then 74.6% to 71.87% at Wellington CDI3* in June, where Charlotte finished third behind winners Carl and Fame.

Charlotte’s international average had rested on just those two grands prix this season – the smallest sample size of any on the British dressage squad shortlist for Aachen 2026. And as the team is due to be confirmed this month, Hartpury was billed as the last chance for either combination to move the needle before selectors make their call.

Why Hartpury was a key moment in the Aachen worlds selection race

Fiona and Donna Bella were not competing at Hartpury – and although they have beaten Charlotte and Brave Heart on both occasions the pair have faced each other this season, Charlotte’s bumper score has lifted her grand prix average from 72.34% to 73.16%, above Fiona’s 72.9%. Charlotte’s Hartpury score is now also the highest posted by either combination all season, just eclipsing Fiona’s previous best of 74.61%.

Fiona still boasts the bigger sample size having competed at four internationals this season, including in the championship-like atmosphere of the Fontainebleau Nations Cup, where she rode alongside Carl and Lottie on the British team.

But the raw numbers have swung in Charlotte’s favour – a reversal I wouldn’t have predicted after Wellington, when I’d have put money on Fiona and Donna Bella completing the team alongside Fame, Glamourdale and Jagerbomb. Charlotte and Brave Heart had one shot left – and what a time to pull out a personal best.

“I’m so pleased with Brave Heart,” Charlotte said. “His confidence is really growing in the arena, and I know there is so much more to come.”

Her grand prix score did come with a notable spread across the panel, although she was the unanimous winner. Judge at B, Susan Hoevenaars, marked her at 71.85%, more than five points shy of Eduard de Wolff van Westerrode at M’s 77.17% – which selectors will no doubt weigh up. Despite that, her overall marks were remarkably consistent between the two tests, the special just 0.1% off the grand prix.

With averages, sample sizes, head-to-heads and now a scoring spread all in the mix, selectors Judy Harvey, Jenny Ward and Anne Keen have a genuinely tight call to make. I don’t envy them.

Sadie Smith and Swanmore Dantina – also among the nominated entries for Aachen – finished runners-up in the grand prix on their own personal best of 72.65%.

American rider Ashley Holzer completed the podium on 71.96% aboard Hawtins San Floriana, one of several of Charlotte’s former rides now competing at the highest level. Gareth Hughes and Mowgli-Olympia MC, the only other nominated combination in action, finished fourth on 70.98%. Sadie and Dantina went on to win Saturday evening’s freestyle gala, scoring 76.94%.

Susan Pape and Harmony’s Giulilanta were also in action this weekend, competing in Germany at Hagen CDI4*. Going into the competition, their grand prix average of 72.13% was just 0.2% behind Charlotte’s, leaving them an outside chance too. Among a stacked field, they scored 70.17% in the grand prix, finishing ninth, but bumping their grand prix average down to 71.64%.

Here’s how the season’s international grand prix averages now stand across the eight nominated combinations:

The top three didn’t compete this weekend, and their places remain untouched. But for the fourth spot, the picture could hardly be tighter: just 0.26 of a percentage point now separates Charlotte and Fiona – though, as ever, averages alone won’t be what decides it.

A couple of weeks ago, this looked like Fiona’s spot to lose. Now, with the door firmly back open, it’s genuinely anyone’s guess which name the selectors will read out – and as the British entries are not expected to compete again before the announcement, this is the picture they’ll have to work with.

‘One of the best horses I’ve ever ridden’: Charlotte Dujardin wins first national title with Secret Agent

Charlotte Dujardin has won her first national title since her return to competition, winning the Horselight medium gold at the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships (15–19 April) with the seven-year-old Secret Agent (Secret x De Niro).

Charlotte and the stallion, whom she co-owns with Peter Belshaw, scored 77.87%, the highest mark of the non-freestyle classes of the championships.

Only five competitive outings since 2024, combined with 97% scores at four- and five-year-old level, had built an air of mystery around the stallion. The grandstands and ringside were full in anticipation.

Charlotte was unequivocal. “I think he’s one of the best horses I’ve ever ridden,” she said. “Everything becomes so natural for him. He’s incredible to ride – so much power, so elastic, and built to do what he does.”

Secret Agent is a striking athlete, with massive power in the extensions – for which he picked up several nines – and suspension in the trot. But what pleased Charlotte most was how he handled a high-pressure setting with so little competitive experience.

“He’s a very green horse,” she said. “He’s done a couple of medium tests to qualify. He’s literally come in and gone straight to medium; he’s that talented.

“I didn’t do an arena walk at regionals because he’s a stallion – and you just never know what you’re going to get. But I thought, I’ve got to give him a bit more of a chance here, so I made sure I did one.”

Secret Agent handled the atmosphere with maturity. “Although he’s still a bit nervous with people moving in the stands, he still gives the most incredible feeling,” Charlotte said.

“For a young horse, it’s our job to help them grow and give them new experiences, and while for any green horse a competition like today can be a little daunting, he stayed with me. He’s amazing in that sense – he never lets me down.”

A stallion who is so biddable, Charlotte noted, is a rare thing. “It’s a great feeling to have a stallion who’s that with you.

“They can be tricky sometimes – their minds aren’t always on the job. But he just gets it. He’s learning about it all still, but he’s doing really well.”

Charlotte Dujardin: “There’s so much more to come”

Charlotte received a big reception from the crowd after her test. Her first championship title back came with a clear sense of perspective. “I absolutely love it,” she said of competing. “To ride today, to ride on him – it’s what you do it for.

“He’s such a special horse. My score didn’t matter to me. For him, for me, that test was brilliant. He’s done his absolute best given how little he’s done.”

The future, she added, is already taking shape. “There’s so much more to come. He’s only seven. You put him in the balance, and it’s just all there. The future for him is very, very exciting.”

Secret Agent is part of a wider string of talent Charlotte is bringing on. “I’ve got lots of young ones coming through – good young ones that I’m hoping to get out more soon.”

Charlotte Dujardin sells grand prix mare Alive And Kicking to Australian Olympian

Charlotte Dujardin has sold her grand prix mare Alive And Kicking (All At Once x Fürst Piccolo) to Australian Olympian Kristy Oatley.

Eurodressage reported that the 12-year-old Westfalian mare has been acquired by Kirsty’s company Bollmoor Partner GmbH, alongside Kristy’s mother Rosalind Oatley.

The sale explains Charlotte’s recent withdrawal from the 2026 World Cup Final in Fort Worth, Texas, for which she had accepted a starting place with the mare before pulling out.

Alive And Kicking had been one of the most exciting grand prix prospects in British dressage.

She finished second in the grand prix at the World Cup qualifier at the London International Horse Show last December. She looked set to compete for a team spot at this summer’s World Championships in Aachen.

Charlotte discovered her as a four-year-old in Sweden in 2018, buying her off a video after judging at the Swedish Warmblood Young Horse Championships in Flyinge.

“She captured my heart the minute I saw her,” Charlotte told Horse & Hound at the time. “So I took the risk and got her.”

The mare was first produced in the UK by current national champion Sadie Smith, who was formerly Carl Hester’s stable rider, before Charlotte McDowall took over the ride for two years, competing her extensively from medium to small tour level through 2022.

Charlotte Dujardin returned to the saddle in 2023, taking her to grand prix debut at Hartpury that November with a score of 79.13%.

Her international career began in style at the CDI3* in Lier in February 2024, where the pair won the grand prix and grand prix special in a field of 41 starters – immediately establishing themselves as British Olympic hopefuls for Paris, alongside Charlotte’s then top horse Imhotep. A co-ownership share was sold to Austrian investor Ulrike Bachinger around this time.

However, Charlotte’s suspension in July 2024 ended their Paris Olympic dream. When Imhotep was subsequently sold to Austrian rider Diana Porsche in November 2024, Alive and Kicking stepped into the spotlight as Charlotte’s leading grand prix horse.

After returning from her one-year ban, Charlotte competed Alive And Kicking again at Le Mans CDI3* in October 2025, winning both tests, and rode World Cup qualifiers in London and Amsterdam.

In March 2026, Charlotte re-registered as sole owner with the FEI, removing both Bachinger and Hester from the ownership list – a move that, in retrospect, signals the sale could already have been in motion.

Kristy Oatley is a multiple Australian Olympian, having represented her country at five Games.

Charlotte Dujardin pulls out of World Cup Final as Becky Moody carries British hopes

Charlotte Dujardin has withdrawn from the 2026 FEI Dressage World Cup Final in Fort Worth, Texas (8-12 April).

Charlotte had secured one of two additional starting places at the competition after title defender Lottie Fry declined her automatic spot. Justin Verboomen, Isabell Werth, Larissa Pauluis and Marieke van der Putten had also all turned down their qualification spots.

Charlotte qualified under FEI rules as the highest-ranked rider on the dressage world ranking list who had competed in at least two qualifiers but had not already qualified through the western European league. She had contested two qualifiers with Alive And Kicking, finishing fifth in London and sixth in Amsterdam.

Her withdrawal is one of several across the World Cup Finals as a whole; in the showjumping, Germany’s Philipp Schulze Topphoff and Latvia’s Kristaps Neretnieks have also pulled out. Germany’s Raphael Netz will no longer be riding Great Escape Camelot, but instead his reserve ride, Sonja Kristina Krall’s 13-year-old stallion DSP Dieudonne.

As the definite entries deadline has passed, Charlotte’s place will not be reallocated, and there will be 17 combinations competing.

The final field in Fort Worth will be headed by Becky Moody, who will be the sole British dressage representative.

Riding Jagerbomb, she will enter as favourite to take the crown, having posted the highest average qualifying score among those travelling, after a campaign in which they came second in London and Lyon and third in Amsterdam.

The 2024 champion Patrik Kittel with Touchdown and home favourite Christian Simonson with Indian Rock are among those expected to challenge.

Charlotte Dujardin and Becky Moody confirmed for 2026 Dressage World Cup Final as other big names stay at home

The 2026 FEI Dressage World Cup Final entries for the competition in Fort Worth, Texas (April 8-12) have been released, and a host of European riders have declined to compete.

Several of the western European league’s qualifying top nine won’t be making the trip, including league winner Justin Verboomen, Isabell Werth, Larissa Pauluis and Marieke van der Putten. Defending champion Lottie Fry has also declined her automatic spot.

Most are prioritising this summer’s World Championships in Aachen over the flight to the US.

Becky Moody gambled on contesting just three qualifiers – finishing second in London and Lyon, and third in Amsterdam – and it has paid off. As a rider’s four best scores count, her 54-point tally from three outings secured seventh place in the western European league and an automatic spot in Fort Worth.

Charlotte Dujardin, who contested just two qualifiers – finishing fifth in London and sixth in Amsterdam – finished 25th in the league but will still compete with Alive And Kicking.

She secured one of two additional starting places created after Lottie declined her automatic spot, allocated under a rule awarding an extra place to the highest-ranked rider on the FEI dressage world ranking list who has competed in at least two qualifiers but not already qualified through the league.

But it will be Becky and Jagerbomb who will enter as favourites, having posted the highest average score in qualifying among those travelling.

Charlotte, who pipped Becky to second place in the London grand prix, will be expected to challenge, as will 2024 winner Patrik Kittel with Touchdown. Christian Simonson and Indian Rock will be ones to watch on home soil.

‘What a way to start’: Charlotte Dujardin’s former ride returns to competition with his new owner

Imhotep, the former world and European medal-winning ride of Charlotte Dujardin, has made a winning competition debut with his owner Diana Porsche.

The 13-year-old Everdale son, known at home as Pete, was sold to Diana in October 2024 but the 29-year-old rider has been on maternity leave, having welcomed her first child last year.

Diana and Imhotep won a national grand prix at Stadl Paura Equestrian Centre, in Austria, on 6 February, scoring +72%.

“What a way to start. Today marked a successful debut with Pete, and I couldn’t be happier with our first show together,” said Diana.

“Of course, we still need time to get to know each other in the ring and gain more experience as a team, but this was the best first step I could have asked for.”

Diana said being back in the ring “after my baby break made this moment even more special”.

“Grateful, proud, and excited for what’s ahead. Thanks to my entire team, [I] couldn’t be here without you,” she said.

Carl Hester bought Imhotep as a young horse from the Netherlands and he was first competed by Robert Barker and Sadie Smith. Charlotte took over the reins in 2020 when Imhotep was seven, and she produced him up to grand prix.

Charlotte and Imhotep were part of the British team that won silver at the World Championships in 2022 and the gold medal-winning team at the 2023 Europeans, where they also won two bronze medals.

When Imhotep was sold to Diana in 2024, Carl confirmed to H&H that it had always been agreed between Carl, Charlotte and Imhotep’s co-owner Coral Ingham that he would be sold after the Paris Olympics.

“Coral has been the one who has supported us as his owner. We kept him [for Paris] and obviously things didn’t turn out as we hoped. We’d been speaking to Diana in May, she asked if we’d consider selling him, and we said ‘This could be a horse for you’,” Carl told H&H at the time.

Diana represented Austria at six young rider championships from 2013 to 2021, and in recent years has campaigned across Europe. She competed at the 2024 London International Horse Show with Dahoud 3, finishing eighth in the grand prix and 10th in the freestyle. In late 2025 she announced a nationality switch to Hungary.

‘It gave me a real buzz to be back’ – Charlotte Dujardin makes emotional return to London International

Charlotte Dujardin made an emotional return to the London International Horse Show today, finishing second in the FEI Dressage World Cup grand prix, supported by Horse & Hound.

The British double Olympic champion last rode at Excel in 2023, before she was suspended for a year after a video of her striking a horse with a whip around its legs during a training session emerged just before last year’s Paris Olympics. This is by far her highest profile show since her return to competition in late July.

The crowd welcomed Charlotte back with a cheer as her name was announced before her test and she rode with her customary professionalism, finishing with her trademark double pat on the neck and wave to the spectators.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed to be perfectly honest, going in there today,” said Charlotte. “Just going back in that arena, there’s something so incredibly special about riding here.

“Going round the edge and having so many people cheer me on and shout out ‘Go Charlotte’ was very, very emotional and just so good. It gave me a real buzz to be back and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Charlotte Dujardin and her London Horse Show ride, the 11-year-old mare Alive And Kicking — owned by her rider, Ulrike Bachinger and Carl Hester — put in a tidy test today without any major mistakes to score 76.54%.

“‘Audrey’ has done one show this year, which was in La Mans and she’s never been in a show with this atmosphere, this big, there’s so much going on,” said Charlotte, whose two children Isabella and William are with her at the show.

“She’s a very inexperienced grand prix horse – I think she’s only done five grands prix prior to this – so it was a really big ask coming here, but I know she’s a very honest horse.

“In terms of my test, I generally couldn’t have done any more with her, she did her absolute best. There are still green moments and there’s still so much more to come, but on the whole I can’t ask for more.”

Lottie Fry and Glamourdale won the grand prix on 80.78%, with Becky Moody and Jagerbomb third on 75.04% making it a British 1-2-3.

Relive the night Valegro and Charlotte Dujardin rewrote dressage history at Olympia

On the eve of the 2025 edition of the London International Horse Show, we relive the world record-breaking tests of Valegro and Charlotte Dujardin at Olympia in 2014.

The pair shattered both the grand prix and freestyle world records on successive nights, adding to the grand prix special record they set two years earlier. To this day, Valegro and Charlotte still hold all three world records.

Below is our original report from that electric evening at Olympia, written by then Horse & Hound dressage editor Alice Collins, along with footage of their iconic freestyle – a performance that helped redefine the sport.

“I just don’t know what more you can ask,” said judge Isobel Wessels after the absolute masters of the dressage universe – Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro – broke a second world record in as many days at Olympia.

The world number ones produced two extraordinary, spellbinding performances to better their own records two nights on the bounce. The horse’s adjustability, willingness, athleticism and power were simply breathtaking.

As Charlotte planted her final halt in the freestyle, smack back on the music, the capacity crowd impulsively rose to their feet and showed their appreciation for the pair who have propelled the sport of dressage into the mainstream consciousness.

“They never missed a beat” is a hackneyed old phrase, but in this instance actually true.

Charlotte grinned and punched the air, struggling to rein in her emotion.

“In the last piaffe-passage I was nearly in tears,” she said.

“However much I want from this horse, he gives it to me – that’s what makes me so emotional. He just keeps on giving and giving, and it’s the most incredible feeling. When all those people stood up, I felt so proud.”

The pressures of the Olympia arena – with the crowds so close – are well documented. But Charlotte was hot off the red carpet from the Sports Personality of the Year award ceremony in Glasgow, where she was fourth with over 75,000 votes.

“Coming here and performing was the easiest thing in the world after standing in front of 12,000 people. This, riding, is what I do every day – but standing in front of people? No. In a dress? No! I was like a nappy horse when I went up on stage, I just wanted to turn and run. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it was going to come through my dress.”

She left behind all traces of those nerves for Olympia.

In the grand prix – where the top three were unchanged from 2013 – Charlotte “just rode a schooling round” as 12-year-old Valegro had not been to a show since the World Equestrian Games in Caen in August (where they also won everything – there’s a theme here).

“Win or lose, if he’s tried his hardest and I‘ve done my best, the score is irrelevant,” she shrugged. “The record’s just a bonus.”

The freestyle test was flawless, with not a single mis-step.

Judge Isobel Wessels said: “Everything was there in the test. The difficulty factor maybe didn‘t come across, but that’s because they made everything look so easy – even the canter half-passes were so steep. And Tom Hunt’s music was magical – like a story, not just belting sound out.”

Isobel awarded a remarkable artistic mark of 99%.

“I couldn’t give 100% as I thought the computer would blow up,” she joked. “I wasn’t sure it could take the extra digit. I thought it might be like the millennium bug all over again.”

Fellow judge Stephen Clarke added: “I honestly didn’t think we’d replicate the magic of the night back in 2009 when Edward Gal broke the world record on Totilas – but Charlotte doing this is out of this world. I don’t know what it is about this show, but the horses go amazingly here.”

‘Their legacy will shape British dressage for decades’: equestrian world remembers Valegro and Uthopia

The equestrian community is remembering Valegro and Uthopia – the much-loved dressage powerhouses who gained fans worldwide.

Following the announcement on 1 December of their passing, there has been an outpouring of love as people shared happy memories of what made them so special.

Valegro’s co-owner Rowena Luard said she was “smitten” at first sight.

“My first glimpse of Valegro was at one of his early young horse shows. I was smitten. Carl asked me if I might like to be part of Valegro’s future and it was the easiest decision of my life,” she told H&H.

“He was a small horse but had such presence. I loved his beautiful, elegant face and kind eye. It was when we started doing the shows with him that you saw our little boy transform into this elegant powerhouse. It was definitely the crowd that elevated him. He just loved to perform.”

Rowena said watching Valegro break records was “such a privilege, but almost just as satisfying was the effect he had on everyone. He was such a gentleman. So kind, so patient. He was a true equine rockstar,” she said.

“His journey to global stardom was enabled by a phenomenal team of people from the early days whose hard work and passion really made it all happen. Chef d’equipe Dickie Waygood and Richard Davidson were our heroes, as was Will Connell of British Equestrian. The vets and masseuse who travelled with him everywhere ensured our athlete was in top top shape at all times.

“Haydn Price, the British team farrier, was a huge support and with whom I held hands at most of the competitions as I was so nervous. Alan of course, our supergroom and super personal assistants Claudine and Katie, who handled all of the logistics and mountains of paperwork. Anne Barrott joined the team as another co-owner and we so loved following the global adventures of Team Valegro. It was incredible to witness such a team of consummate professionals working so tirelessly to achieve our dreams.”

A British Dressage spokesperson said Valegro and Uthopia “leave legacies that will shape British dressage for decades to come”.

“Their hoofprints may have faded from the competition arena, but the mark they left on our sport is indelible,” said the spokesperson.

“Though different in personality and way of going, Valegro and Uthopia were united by the principles that brought them to greatness. Together, they brought our sport to new audiences, reshaped the public’s understanding of dressage, inspired a generation and demonstrated that outstanding performance is built on kindness and trust.”

British Dressage chief executive Jason Brautigam said it was “these two legends” that led to him being in his role.

“The incredible performances of Uthopia and Valegro at London 2012 will live long in the memory of all equestrian fans. It was such a special occasion and was transformational for the sport in Great Britain. It was the moment that dressage captured the hearts and minds of the public, and I was no exception,” he said.

“It was an absolute privilege to see Valegro win gold again in Rio. An experience I will personally cherish forever.”

Mr Brautigam added “but most importantly, these two horses redefined dressage”.

“Their beautiful, gentle souls, relaxed temperament, and seemingly effortless ability in the arena heralded a new era. Their wonderful partnerships with Carl and Charlotte showcased the best of our sport,” he said.

“As any visitor to Carl’s yard would agree, spirits were always lifted by the sight of these two companions enjoying their well-earned retirement in the paddock. Now, they are sadly no longer with us, but we should take comfort that they remained inseparable to the end.”

Six-time Badminton winner Lucinda Green was “incredibly spoiled” to have a lesson on Valegro.

“I set across the diagonal in medium trot and I could hardly sit there – it was such power,” she told H&H. “He was an absolute sweetheart to ride, he was such a lovely person.”

Lucinda remembers Valegro’s London 2012 freestyle, where he and Charlotte scored 90.09% for individual gold.

“The music along with Big Ben was the most striking thing. Valegro held his own and it was wonderful.”

Lucinda said what Carl and Uthopia and Charlotte and Valegro achieved was “phenomenal”.

“The pair of them, they were just iconic. And I think it’s lovely that they’ve both gone off to fly with the angels together.”

‘Like a symphony; every note was so beautiful’: Olympic dressage judge pays tribute to Valegro and Uthopia

Top British judge Isobel Wessels, who was on the panel at all of Valegro’s record-breaking performances, has remembered him and Uthopia for their talent and characters – and putting Britain on the world stage.

The international rider, trainer and five-star judge has paid tribute to the much-loved pair following the announcement on 1 December that they had been put down.

Isobel described Valegro (Blueberry) and Uthopia (Uti) as being “both such complete horses”.

“When you judged them they both had clearly been so well trained and were so willing. It was the beginning of all of this wonderful harmony we talk about now. Those two, coming with Carl and Charlotte, they started the ‘pole’ rolling so to speak,” Isobel told H&H.

“We’d seen lovely combinations in the past, but these horses just always gave me the feeling that they were happy in their job. They loved what they did, and they did it with such ease and willingness. They both just got better and better, and that isn’t always the case with horses.”

Uthopia and Valegro first made their mark at the European Dressage Championships at Rotterdam in 2011, under Carl and Charlotte, helping deliver Britain’s first European team gold medal – alongside teammates Laura Tomlinson and Mistral Hojris and Emile Faurie and Elemegardens Marquis. It was at this competition that Uthopia came to the forefront, taking individual silver, behind the Netherlands’ Adelinde Cornelissen and Pazival.

“Uti was just like a little powerhouse. He came across as being not a huge mover, but his extended trot just came out of something inside him. There was this willingness,” she said.

“He wasn’t the biggest horse in stature, but the way Carl trained him, it was every other moment one was thinking ‘Wow, where did that come from?’. I’ll never forget in Rotterdam when he got all 10s for his extended trot. He was small but mighty. That was the beginning of this power pair coming up, that was their first step.”

Isobel said Valegro was “such an enormous character”.

“Blueberry was like a big rubber ball; just so talented but he had this character and personality. When you sat on the side of the arena judging he, he grabbed you,” she said.

“I’m so proud that I was on the jury of all his record-breaking scores for the grand prix, special and freestyle. I feel very honoured my name was on all those test sheets.”

Isobel added that judging Valegro and Uthopia made her job very enjoyable.

“Horses that have some spectacular moments are of course wonderful to observe and judge, but when you have this complete horse, which they both were, it was like a symphony. Every note was so beautiful,” she said.

“There was no struggle, it was just a natural easygoing picture, where the horses blossomed and became more and more because of who they were and their wonderful training.”

Isobel said that Valegro and Uthopia “put Britain on the world stage”.

“It’s been the showcase of our traditional and worldly respected horsemanship and ability,” she said.

“I think with those horses, it was just like: ‘Bang, here we are on the world stage – look out, Britain’s coming’.”

‘You are still so loved’: Charlotte Dujardin pays farewell tribute to her world record-breaking partner Valegro

Charlotte Dujardin has paid her final tribute to her superstar dancing partner Valegro, or Blueberry as he was fondly known, after his death aged 23.

She and Carl Hester announced today that Valegro and Uthopia, best of friends throughout their lives, had been allowed to go peacefully together.

Charlotte addressed her words to “Dear Blueberry”.

“I love you,” she said. “I don’t know how to start this with any other words.

“I knew of course this day would come, but I don’t think I could ever be ready for it. And I’m sitting here, summoning up the courage to write this, knowing I’ll never have the words, knowing they’ll never be enough, but wanting to share something anyway because so many people loved you and it just feels like the right thing to do. You have been and still are so loved.

“You have been my constant, my rock. Through the highest highs and the lowest lows, your gentle presence, your steady heartbeat, the silent moments we shared together have been my everything, the place I could always go to. In those quiet moments we had so many conversations without words; you loved me completely, as I am. You saw my heart and I yours.

“I’ve never sat on a horse like you, Blueberry. It was always your heart and your mind that made you the best. We grew together, learned together, believed together. You would enter the arena and just know how special you were – I could feel you grow. The hush of the crowd as everyone turned to look at you. It would make me sit a little taller, shoulders back, head up – I just wanted to do you proud, to show the world what you were capable of; I could feel every muscle in your body move, every breath you took, every shiver of excitement and we would just melt into each other, it was like you could hear my heart speak and I yours.

“A partnership that everyone talks about, but you can’t really know until you’ve experienced it. And we danced Blueberry, didn’t we dance…”

Valegro, owned by Roly Luard and Anne Barrott, was bred by Joop and Maartje Hanse. He moved to Carl Hester’s yard aged two, and although he was initially given to Charlotte to bring on for Carl, their partnership was so strong, it could not be broken.

Charlotte said Blueberry transformed the sport; the London Olympics in 2012 were “the greatest stage”.

“We had no idea how our worlds would change, just a girl and a horse, trying our best,” she said.

“But the biggest gift of all was the amount of joy you brought to this world. You made people smile every single day of your life. What a rare and special gift that is. You were born to do it, you always knew who needed extra care – so gentle with my children and the many others who met you, particularly those unwell. Seeing eyes light up – what a difference you made.

“To those who were able to meet you, even if just passing by, you gave hope, love and belief – you genuinely changed people’s lives, just with a touch, a nuzzle, warm breath on a face; just by being you. I’m so glad William and Isabella met you – they will grow up knowing your name, hearing stories about you, looking at pictures and videos of you. You will live on, not just in theirs, but in so many peoples’ hearts, and that gives me great happiness – you deserve to, and will be, remembered for ever.

“You chose me. And I was for ever yours. I don’t know why, or how, but I thank my lucky stars you did. Our story is one that anyone who’s ever loved a horse can relate to – far beyond the medals and the talent, the reason to keep going, the reason we get up in the morning and do what we do, for the simple love of a horse.

“You have been, and always will be, my one in a million and it has been the honour of my life to be not only your dance partner but best friend. The magic we had, no one can take from us, and we will dance again one day.

“I feel you with me, I know you’re here. I saw a robin after I’d finished my tests the other day – just sitting quietly nearby, watching. Joined by a second before both flying off. You and Uti, always side by side, together always. I miss you both, more than I can say. The robin stayed just long enough for me to know you were there with me. It lifts me, and I will always look for you.

“I love you Blueberry. With every inch of my heart. For ever and always. My beautiful, best boy.”

Heartbroken farewell to beloved superstars Valegro and Uthopia who created dressage’s golden era

There is an “emptiness in the air” in the yard, Carl Hester said, as superstars Valegro and Uthopia have been put down, aged 23 and 24 respectively.

The legendary horses, who with Carl and Charlotte Dujardin changed the face of British dressage and “gave our sport a golden era”, were the best of friends throughout their lives; Carl said letting them go together was “the final act of loyalty and dignity I felt I could give them”.

“Sleep well Blueberry and Uti, two of the greatest horses of our generation,” he said.

“It is with immense sadness that we have said goodbye to Valegro and Uthopia and without question, this is a loss that just feels hard to comprehend.

“Trying to write a tribute to these two horses feels harder than I imagined. The yard just doesn’t feel the same without them, there’s an emptiness in the air.”

Valegro and Charlotte together won three Olympic gold medals; team and individual in 2012 and individual in 2016, when the team won silver. They won individual world gold in 2014, European gold in 2013 and 2015, and back-to-back World Cup Final titles – and broke just about every dressage record going.

Carl and Uthopia were also on the team that won Olympic gold in 2012; they also took team and European gold and individual silver in 2011 and team bronze in 2013.

“Valegro and Uthopia did more than win medals and write history, they gave our sport a golden era,” Carl said. “They both showed that greatness can be gentle, sensitive and harmonious and they made a nation proud and inspired so many.

“Being part of their journey will always remain one of my proudest achievements and the whole team and myself are deeply grateful for the joy they gave to us at home but also to their fans around the world.

“Their entire lives ran in parallel; they travelled to the shows side by side, lived in neighbouring stables, grazed in the same fields and retired together. Their bond and companionship were absolute.”

Carl said that as their years advanced, so too did their health challenges.

“So allowing them to leave this world together was the final act of loyalty and dignity I felt I could give them, honouring a partnership that had never been separated in life,” he said.

“They leave behind a huge void, and the yard has changed for ever and so have we. They were our family and I will love and miss them always. The impact they had will remain but sadly, we don’t get to keep horses forever.

“We only get to carry what they leave inside us. And these two left us so much.”

Charlotte Dujardin to return to London showdown: star-studded World Cup field revealed

Charlotte Dujardin headlines the entries for the dressage World Cup leg, supported by Horse & Hound, at the 2025 London International Horse Show. She will be bringing her top ride, Alive And Kicking.

Since returning from her year-long suspension on 27 July, Charlotte has gone on an 11-test unbeaten run. She and Alive And Kicking scored CDI3* grand prix and special wins in Le Mans last month, but London will be by far the highest profile show she has contested since her return.

She will face strong home competition from Lottie Fry and Glamourdale, who are back to defend their title. The World Cup holder, world champion and triple Olympic bronze medallist is aiming to add a third London victory to her record after wins in 2022 and 2024.

Becky Moody and Jagerbomb will also be gunning for the title. They were Britain’s strongest performers at this summer’s European Championships in Crozet and won the grand prix here in 2024, slipping down the order in the freestyle.

Their confidence will be high after a strong runner-up finish at the Lyon World Cup leg in October, where they placed second to world number ones Justin Verboomen and Zonik Plus.

Becky will also be debuting a new, one-off freestyle created specifically for London, which she has so far managed to keep firmly under wraps.

It is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic dressage events of 2025, even with a direct clash with the CDI5* in Frankfurt. Frankfurt will host the established invitation-only class for the world’s top 10-ranked riders, as well as the reported €300,000 prize pot previously offered in Stockholm, which could not find a sponsor for 2025.

Among those expected to compete in Frankfurt are Justin, Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour and Isabell Werth.

Completing the British entries are two exciting new faces. Germany-based Susan Pape will bring Harmony’s Giulilanta, who has enjoyed a strong season, including a win in the CDI4* grand prix special at Hagen in April with a personal best of 73.04%. Joining them are national champions and rising stars Sadie Smith and Swanmore Dantina, who will be making their World Cup qualifier debut.

There is plenty of international firepower in the mix too. Norway’s Isabel Freese returns with Total Hope OLD, last year’s runners-up, and the Netherlands’ Marieke van der Putten brings the Glamourdale son Kuvasz RS2, a 10-year-old who has impressed throughout 2025.

France’s Morgan Barbançon heads to London straight after a World Cup qualifier win in Motešice with the ever-reliable Sir Donnerhall II OLD, who finished fifth here in 2023. Germany’s Moritz Treffinger is another to keep an eye on. He and his Hanoverian stallion Cadeau Noir claimed the European under-25 freestyle title in July and continue to look like a pair on the rise.

Who is Charlotte Dujardin’s latest grand prix star? Everything you need to know

Charlotte Dujardin made a winning return to top-level sport at Wellington CDI3* (11-12 October), claiming a double win with Brave Heart II (Bordeaux x Tuschinski) – her latest grand prix partner.

The compact 11-year-old gelding may be new under Charlotte, but he’s already proven himself on this stage. In 2024, he topped the freestyle at the same venue with his owner, Ellie McCarthy, 29, in the saddle, with a score of 74.530% – the highest score of the competition.

“That win was probably our highlight together,” Ellie told H&H. “We were second in the grand prix with a personal best, too. I actually cried on the final centre line because he just gave me such a good feeling, and I knew there was a lot more in there.”

How Ellie found Brave Heart II

Ellie has owned Brave Heart, known at home as Massimo, for more than three years, having bought him in 2022 from Finnish Olympian Henri Rouste.

“I think it was April or May 2022. I actually had Covid when I was meant to go and try him, and I couldn’t go at first because I was so ill,” Ellie recalls.

But once she recovered, the decision was instant. “He was the first and only one I tried,” she said. “I was struggling to find horses at that time – there just didn’t seem to be many around.

“He was like a little pocket rocket. I’m quite tall, but I like smaller horses. He’s not the easiest horse to ride, but he’s very fun to ride.”

At the time, the then-eight-year-old was training at small tour level. “He was kind of green for all of the advanced work, to be honest,” Ellie added. “And he hadn’t competed for quite a while before I got him – he didn’t have a lot of experience.

“So for the first year together, we just stayed at that level, solidifying the training a little, and giving me time to get used to him. I knew he was so special, so I didn’t want to push him too hard.

“He has a full brother, Bonheur De La Vie, who’s two years older, who competed at the European Championships this year for Switzerland with my friend Charlotta Rogerson. He’s amazing too – a giant compared to Massimo, though.”

From debut to breakout season

The following season, the pair stepped up to grand prix, winning their debut at Sparsholt College with 71.3% in April. Two months later, they made their international debut at Wellington, and capped off the year with podium finishes at Le Mans CDI3 – third in both the grand prix (69.61%) and freestyle (74.67%).

But 2024 was their breakout season, which the pair kicked off with two months competing in Florida.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Florida to compete there, and I literally went completely on my own – just me and him,” Ellie said. “But he’s so nice and easy to look after, like a little pony. I wasn’t too worried about going on my own with him.”

“That was an experience in itself. I’d love to go back one day. I remember on one of the Friday night freestyles, in the World Cup class, we had terrible, torrential rain – we were soaked through. But the crowd was amazing, cheering us on, and we ended up third.”

Back on home soil, a win at Wellington marked Ellie’s first senior international victory, quickly followed by her Nations Cup debut in Compiègne.

At home, Ellie describes Brave Heart as having a “cheeky, almost pony-like character.” His routine is relaxed, with regular turnout and hacking – which he does in a bitless bridle.

How Charlotte Dujardin got the ride on Brave Heart II

Ellie explained that Charlotte Dujardin had been involved behind the scenes for some time, occasionally stepping in when Ellie was away.

“She’s always helped me a little bit with him since I’ve had him. When I’ve gone on holiday, she’s had him in for training.”

Even with their successes, Ellie was still working towards unlocking Brave Heart’s best form in the arena.

“I wasn’t struggling with him exactly, but I couldn’t get the same out of him at a show that I could at home,” she said.

“He’s turning 12 next year, and I didn’t want his prime years to be spent with me still learning how to get the most out of him.”

It wasn’t a decision she took lightly.

“It wasn’t easy. I do believe in myself, and I know I can do it – eventually. But I didn’t want to hold him back.”

“He’s my first top-level horse, and it’s all a learning process. I’ve learned a lot from him. I just needed help, and I wanted him to be the best he can.

“Charlotte’s probably the best person to help me do that. I asked her if she’d want to compete him a bit – and it just went from there.”

What’s next for Charlotte Dujardin and Brave Heart?

The partnership is still in its early days – Charlotte has only been riding Brave Heart for two months – and no long-term decisions have been made yet.

“But to be getting scores like that this early on is pretty amazing,” Ellie said.

Charlotte’s current string now includes her top ride, the 11-year-old mare Alive And Kicking (All At Once x Fürst Piccolo), six-year-old Secret Agent (Secret x De Niro) — who made headlines in 2024 with a 97.2% score in a five-year-old qualifier — and her promising new small tour ride, Special Effekt (Sezuan x Cantoblanco).

Charlotte Dujardin makes a winning international comeback with new ride

Charlotte Dujardin made a confident comeback to international competition at Wellington CDI3* (11-12 October), guiding Ellie McCarthy’s 11-year-old gelding Brave Heart II to victory in both the grand prix (73.74%) and the grand prix special (72.83%).

There was little sign of ring rust from Britain’s joint most decorated female Olympian, whose performances were accurate and composed, with just a minor mistake in a trot half-pass the only blemish across both tests.

Brave Heart is a new ride for Charlotte, having competed at this level with his owner since April 2023. The gelding enjoyed a freestyle win at Wellington last year with Ellie and also represented Britain in the Nations Cup at Compiègne this season.

“I look forward to seeing this new partnership prosper,” said Judy Harvey, British Dressage’s international director. “He shows a lot of talent and is an exciting horse for the future.

“Charlotte’s wealth of experience can only help him. He’s still a young horse who needs to develop further and find his balance. Where Charlotte is so great is that she can put him in the correct balance and help him through the test.”

Charlotte Dujardin continues her comeback

Charlotte made her competitive return on 27 July after serving a one-year suspension, winning both the advanced medium 3 (74.46%) and 4 (76.71%) at Hunters Equestrian with another new ride, Special Effekt (Sezuan x Cantoblanco).

Between that return and Wellington, she’s competed three more times. The outstanding six-year-old Secret Agent (Secret x De Niro) collected a double medium win at Hunters and another medium victory at Hartpury University and College on 78.67%. Special Effekt has also continued her strong run, including a prix st georges debut victory, also at Hartpury, on 73.97%.

During her time away from competition, Charlotte’s top ride, Imhotep, was sold to Austrian rider Diana Porsche – in a move Carl Hester confirmed to H&H had always been planned for after the Paris Olympics. Her up-and-coming ride Times Kismet, was also sold to backers of the Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl.

But with her new string, Charlotte has now won all nine of her tests since returning to competition. Her stable is set to be bolstered further by the return of her own and Ulrike Bachinger’s Alive And Kicking (All At Once x Fürst Piccolo) – the grand prix understudy to Imhotep in the build-up to the Paris Olympics – who is due to make her comeback at Le Mans CDI3* this week (17 October).

Charlotte Dujardin returns to competition after one-year suspension

Charlotte Dujardin has made her competitive comeback after serving a one-year suspension from the sport. The three-time Olympic gold medallist returned to the arena at Hunters Equestrian on 27 July, winning both the advanced medium 3 (74.46%) and 4 (76.71%) on new ride Special Effekt.

Her return marks the end of a difficult chapter in her career. In July 2024, just days before the Paris Olympics, video footage surfaced showing Charlotte striking a horse with a whip around its legs during a training session. She voluntarily withdrew from the Games and was provisionally suspended the same day, 23 July.

The FEI launched an investigation and, on 5 December, announced a one-year ban and a fine of 10,000 Swiss francs (£8,886), citing three rule violations: horse abuse, conduct bringing the sport into disrepute, and breach of the FEI code of conduct on horse welfare.

The international ban, also backed by British Equestrian and British Dressage, was backdated to 23 July 2024.

Charlotte publicly accepted the verdict, expressing “deep regret” and stating: “I understand the responsibility that comes with my position in the sport, and I will forever aim to do better.”

The FEI Tribunal described the incident as an “isolated occurrence” and acknowledged her previously clean disciplinary record and voluntary Olympic withdrawal. But the fallout was significant. Charlotte lost sponsorships, ambassadorial roles, and was ineligible for UK Sport funding during her suspension.

Charlotte said at the time: “This has undoubtedly been one of the darkest and most difficult periods of my life, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during this time.

“To those of you who have sent messages, emails and tried to reach me to check in on how I am – thank you. Every kind word truly has made a difference, more than you’ll ever know.”

Since her provisional suspension, Charlotte’s top ride, Imhotep, was sold to Austrian rider Diana Porsche – in a move Carl Hester confirmed to H&H had always been planned for after the Paris Olympics. Her up-and-coming ride Times Kismet, was also sold to backers of the Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl.

Charlotte Dujardin has thanked all those who have supported her during “one of the darkest and most difficult periods of my life” – and announced that she is expecting her second child.

The FEI this morning (5 December) announced the conclusion of its investigation into the training video of Charlotte that emerged before the Olympics this summer. Charlotte has now made a statement in response.

“I fully respect the verdict issued by the FEI,” she said.

“As the federation has recognised, my actions in the video do not reflect who I am and I can only apologise again. I understand the responsibility that comes with my position in the sport, and I will for ever aim to do better.”

The FEI has fined Charlotte and suspended her for a year, including the time for which she had been provisionally suspended, and taking into account her previously clean disciplinary record, and the fact she had voluntarily withdrawn from the Olympics. The FEI Tribunal panel also noted that “the FEI considered that the video constituted the only occurrence of horse abuse committed by the respondent, in what can be considered as an ‘isolated incident’.”

Charlotte said: “This has undoubtedly been one of the darkest and most difficult periods of my life, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during this time. To those of you who have sent messages, emails and tried to reach me to check in on how I am – thank you. Every kind word truly has made a difference, more than you’ll ever know.

“What I was unable to share at the time is that I am currently pregnant, with my baby due in February. This was planned well before the Olympics and something my partner Dean and I have been excited about for a long time.

“At the moment, the energy I have is focused on Dean and our daughter Isabella, and we are all very much looking forward to the arrival of our new family member.”

‘A clear message’ as FEI suspends and fines Charlotte Dujardin for training video

Charlotte Dujardin has been suspended for a year and fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£8,885) for the training video of her that emerged before the Olympics.

Charlotte had been provisionally suspended since 23 July for “engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare”, and the FEI announced the final sanctions today (5 December).

“On 22 July 2024, the FEI received a video, submitted by a lawyer representing an undisclosed complainant, that showed Dujardin excessively whipping a horse during a training session at a private stable,” an FEI spokesperson said.

“The FEI immediately began an investigation, and contacted both Dujardin and her national federation.”

Charlotte confirmed she was the person in the video and voluntarily withdrew from the Paris Olympics. She agreed to be provisionally suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The FEI’s investigation, conducted with Dujardin’s full cooperation, concluded that Dujardin was the only person who had engaged in a rule violation in relation to the video,” the spokesperson said. “Additionally, the investigation found that aside from the conduct shown in the video, no other rule violations had occurred during, or in connection with, the training session.

“Since the video’s release, the FEI has not received any additional complaints or reports of violations concerning Dujardin’s conduct.”

The FEI cited three charges: abuse of horse, conduct that brings the FEI and/or equestrian sport and the FEI into disrepute and breach of the FEI code of conduct on the welfare of the horse. Charlotte admitted the charges and accepted the sanctions proposed by the FEI. The agreement of sanctions was submitted to the FEI Tribunal for confirmation

The FEI took into account the fact Charlotte’s previously clean disciplinary record, and that she had voluntarily withdrawn from the Olympics, and in the Tribunal report, it states: “In particular, the panel notes that, following the investigations conducted by the FEI, the FEI considered that the video constituted the only occurrence of horse abuse committed by the respondent, in what can be considered as an ‘isolated incident’.”

The suspension is mirrored by British Dressage, and her provisional suspension will be credited towards it.

“It is regrettable that this case has put our sport in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, especially during a critical time leading up to the Olympic Games,” FEI secretary general Sabrina Ibáñez said.

“Yet, despite the challenges, the FEI acted decisively by immediately opening an investigation and imposing a provisional suspension.

“These significant sanctions send a clear message that anyone, regardless of their profile, who engages in conduct that compromises the welfare of the horse will face serious consequences. We believe this outcome reaffirms the FEI’s commitment to equine welfare and to its role as guardian of our equine partners.”

H&H contacted Charlotte and she released a statement that said: “I fully respect the verdict issued by the FEI. As the federation has recognised, my actions in the video do not reflect who I am and I can only apologise again. I understand the responsibility that comes with my position in the sport, and I will for ever aim to do better.”

At the time of her withdrawal from Paris, Charlotte said the video showed an error of judgement, adding: “What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment.

“I am sincerely sorry for my actions and devastated that I have let everyone down, including Team GB, fans and sponsors.”

A spokesperson for British Equestrian (BEF) and British Dressage (BD) said both “fully endorse” the FEI statement.

BEF CEO Jim Eyre said: “We are confident that this has been a thorough disciplinary process and thank those involved for their professional approach. The sanctions were discussed at board level by BEF and BD and both agreed that the suspension and fine are in line with the parameters outlined in the FEI’s regulatory framework.

“The welfare and ethical treatment of horses has always been a priority and no one involved in our sport should be in any doubt that we expect the highest standards at all times. We will continue to work with our member bodies tirelessly to uphold the integrity of our sports through enforcement, education, and advancement in our knowledge.”

BD CEO Jason Brautigam added: “We stand united with the FEI in taking a zero-tolerance approach to any breaches of our equine welfare policies – and this case has proved that these disciplinary processes work, regardless of the status of the individual concerned.

“We launched the Charter for the Horse last year and remain totally committed to upholding these standards. Working closely with our colleagues across the federation, we will continue to collectively put the health, care and wellbeing of the horse at the heart of everything we do, and proactively demonstrate that equestrian sport is conducted in an ethical and responsible way.”

Charlotte Dujardin’s top ride Imhotep has been sold – in a move Carl Hester has confirmed to H&H had always been planned for after the Paris Olympics.

As reported by Eurodressage this week, 11-year-old gelding Imhotep, owned by Coral Ingham and Carl, had been sold to 28-year-old Austrian rider Diana Porsche.

The news follows the sale of Charlotte’s ride Times Kismet to Jessica von Bredow-Werndl’s partners for Jessica to campaign, but Carl told H&H he wanted it be clear that the sale of “Pete” was always on the cards – and that he and Charlotte were “fully supportive and in agreement”.

“There’s no sinister, awful situation. Between Charlotte, myself and Coral, we always kept Pete for the Olympic Games and he was always going to be sold afterwards,” he said.

“The timing could have been more ideal, especially with Kismet being sold, and those things happen. But this was always going to happen and unfortunately Kismet went first, which made this look a bit more weird – but it’s not weird at all.”

Carl bought Pete (by Everdale and out of Vivaldi mare Della D’ottie) as a youngster from the Netherlands after Henry Boswell sent him a video. He was first competed by Robert Barker, then Sadie Smith, and Charlotte took over the reins in 2020. Charlotte and Pete won four classes at the nationals in 2021, and made their international debut together at Compiegne the following year.

Charlotte and Pete were part of the British team that won silver at the World Championships in Herning in 2022. At the 2023 Europeans they were part of the gold medal-winning team, and won individual silver and two bronze medals, with a +91% in the freestyle. Following the Europeans, Charlotte and Pete won every time they competed; the London International 2023 and the Hagen, Hickstead, and Wellington CDIs this year.

Diana has represented Austria at six young rider championships from 2013 to 2021, and Carl believes she is a good match for Pete.

“Diana is a young rider, she’s talented, and she’s very interested in how we keep Pete and how our lifestyle is for the horses. She studied all the tests he’s done, and I’m really excited for her. He’s only 11, she’s only in her 20s, and hopefully they’ll have a nice long career together,” said Carl.

“She was thrilled and said Charlotte has done such an amazing job with her training of the horse, and what a well-rounded, grounded horse he is. Diana rode him beautifully, it’s a perfect opportunity for us and for her to have a horse to go forward with.

“My biggest concern was how he would be kept, when he was coming from here and how much he likes his field life and hacking, and Diana can do all of that. It was the perfect lifestyle and perfect rider, we get on, so we’re all happy to see how the future goes for her.”

Carl added that “Diana has our blessing”.

“She’s going to keep in touch and we’re going to help her out with anything she might need to know, or training or anything like that,” he said.

Olympic dressage champion takes the reins of rising star, formerly ridden by Charlotte Dujardin

Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl has taken over the reins of Times Kismet, the rising dressage star previously competed by Charlotte Dujardin.

The promising nine-year-old mare, by Ampere and out of Lord Leatherdale daughter Evita, was bred by Peter Belshaw. She was competed twice as a four-year-old by Katherine Bailey, before Charlotte took on the ride and produced her up the levels.

On Monday (28 October) Jessica said that it was “with great excitement and gratitude that we welcome Times Kismet to Aubenhausen”.

Peter Belshaw confirmed to H&H that Kismet has been sold and the ride was secured for Jessica by her partners, who are now the legal owners.

“Bret Willson made contact and was able to offer an alternative plan that I had to give serious thought to,” he said.

“These decisions are not easy and with the uncertainty of the investigation, the uncertainty of the road back for Charlotte and the time this will take while Kismet is heading towards her prime years, the proposal from Jessica and her partners made a lot of sense for Kismet’s welfare and future career.”

As reported on Eurodressage, Mr Belshaw said he loves Kismet and that it had been a very hard decision but he wanted to give the mare the future she deserves, and he intends to stay in touch and be part of her future career.

Bar one class, Charlotte and Kismet won every outing they had together, including the novice and elementary gold finals at the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships in 2021, and the medium and advanced medium gold winter finals in spring 2022.

Later that year they won the advanced medium title at the Le Mieux National Championships, and in 2023 they won the prix st georges and inter I finals at the nationals. The mare’s other highlights include a small tour victory at Aachen in 2023, after which Charlotte described Kismet as an “Olympic horse” who showed “everything for grand prix”.

Charlotte and Kismet won on their final outing together, the Dressage Future Elite Championship at the 2023 Horse of the Year Show, on +83%.

“We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to have such a wonderful horse in our care,” said Jessica.

“We want to thank our partners and Kismet’s breeder Peter Belshaw for collaborating with us. And thanks to Bret Willson for connecting us.”

Jessica added that it has “been a joy getting to know Times Kismet”.

“She has an incredible character, that proves what great training and care she has had from Charlotte and Carl [Hester]. I am just so grateful for this opportunity with her”.

‘We’ve got to put the horses first’: Carl Hester on the sport’s challenges – and the Charlotte Dujardin video

“We have to show the positives of the sport,” was the message from Carl Hester at the Paris Olympics, as he addressed the Charlotte Dujardin video – and the challenges facing equestrian sport.

Following Carl’s grand prix test this morning with the wonderful Fame, which slotted them into third of the group A riders on 77.35%, he tackled the topic of his former teammate.

Last week Charlotte Dujardin withdrew from the dressage team for the Paris Olympics owing to an “error of judgement”, in a coaching session some years ago, captured in a video. Charlotte was suspended by the FEI pending the outcome of the investigation/disciplinary proceedings, and British Equestrian mirrored the suspension.

Carl said the video was “a huge shock to me” and confirmed he was not previously aware of it. The video was not filmed at his property.

“Charlotte’s made her statement, and she’s apologised and given her thoughts on it, which I respect. It’s now an ongoing investigation with the FEI,” said Carl.

“I’ve known Charlotte for 17 years, she’s a mum, and she’s paid very heavily for this in a way that you just wouldn’t believe. I know she will have to accept what the FEI gives her, and she will, but I just hope that she’s strong enough to be able to come back from that. Nobody’s going to support [what was seen in the video]. You can’t. But my personal opinion of Charlotte over 17 years – I have not seen that.”

Carl added that he has not seen Charlotte as he has been in Paris, but he said he knew that things are “very, very difficult” for her.

“She’s surrounded by people who are trying to help her. She obviously accepts what she did and I’m glad she’s done that. And everyone can see she’s done that,” he said.

“This was four years ago, people do make mistakes. Right now it’s going to be a long road for her, and a lesson for everybody in the horse world. We’ve got to put the horses first and show that.”

Moving forwards, Carl said that “we have to show the positives of the sport”.

“We can show how much we love our horses, and how we train them,” he said. “As we see from the sport here in Paris; the last few days we’ve seen amazing sport and we’ve seen the care that everyone’s getting, the grooms here are incredibly hard working, how they love and look after the horses. And I hope that really starts to show.”

Inside the complaint against Charlotte Dujardin – Dutch lawyer clarifies key points

Following the withdrawal of Charlotte Dujardin from the Paris Olympics and subsequent suspension by the FEI over a video that shows her “engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare” H&H contacted Stephan Wensing, the Dutch lawyer representing the claimant who filed the official complaint with the FEI, to clarify some of the conflicting reports.

One of these was when the incident took place. While Charlotte’s statement, which can be read in full below, said the training session was four years ago, Mr Wensing disputes this.

“My client insists the video was filmed two and a half years ago, not four as in Charlotte Dujardin’s statement,” he said. “That would’ve been impossible because the whole world was locked down due to the pandemic.”

He added that the girl riding the horse in the video is not in any way involved in raising the official complaint.

“My client is the one filming and the girl on the horse in the lesson has nothing to do with it,” said Mr Wensing. “My client was a former student of Charlotte Dujardin and had been to her barn a couple of times and had noticed what she now considers abuse.

“But at the time she was thinking, ‘Charlotte is a superstar, she’s the best rider in the world, so she knows what she’s doing – this must be normal’.

“[During the training session shown on the video] Charlotte Dujardin explained to the student and my client that the horse wasn’t cantering enough and must lift up its legs more. It was nothing to do with piaffe or passage – it was a small tour horse, not a grand prix horse.”

Many equestrian fans, and others, have questioned the timing of the release of the video, so close to the Paris Olympics where Charlotte may have become Britain’s most medal-winning female athlete.

“At the time [the video was recorded] my client was thinking this must be normal,” he said. “Then there was some doubt and she began thinking this isn’t okay. She spoke with a few people in the dressage industry who warned her not to do anything because they’ll come after you.

“She was also afraid of victim-blaming so she didn’t do anything with it. But then two other riders were suspended, so she became a little braver.

“Then a few weeks ago she hired me as her lawyer to submit a formal complaint to the FEI. But she was still doubting whether or not it was the right decision for a few reasons.

“First of all, it’s not that she’s celebrating this and drinking champagne, she’s aware there’s a human aspect to this story. The other thing is that she was afraid the FEI wouldn’t take her seriously. It’s not easy to make a step like this.”

Mr Wensing described comments suggesting that the timing of the complaint was designed to sabotage Britain’s medal hopes as “ridiculous”.

“If she wanted to release this at the worst possible time, she would have done it during or after the Olympics. That would’ve been the worst scenario for the British team – at least now they have an alternate that can come in and it doesn’t harm them that much.”

Rallying call behind Equestrian Team GB after Charlotte Dujardin’s suspension

“We are privileged to enjoy the company of horses; we must never compromise on their wellbeing”.

This is the message from British Equestrian (BEF) as it commits to working with the FEI and Charlotte Dujardin on the latter’s suspension – and the focus is on the rest of Equestrian Team GB at the Paris Olympics.

H&H reported yesterday that Charlotte had released a statement explaining why she had withdrawn from the British team, and that the FEI had then officially suspended her from competition.

The BEF and British Dressage (BD) have now confirmed Charlotte’s withdrawal, and the fact they have also suspended her, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

BEF CEO Jim Eyre said: “As the guardians of equestrian sport, we must uphold the highest standards of equine welfare – the horse’s wellbeing is paramount. We have been in close liaison with the FEI on the matter and will fully comply with any requests to fulfil their investigation and support the robust processes around such complaints.

“The allegations made are serious and the consequences far-reaching but upholding the integrity of our sport remains our priority – we are privileged to enjoy the company of horses; we must never compromise on their wellbeing. We will continue to work with the FEI and Charlotte to complete the process.”

BD CEO Jason Brautigam said BD’s commitment is to “bring people and horses together in harmony”.

“And as part of this we constantly strive to achieve the highest standards of horse care,” he said. “We do not condone any behaviour that goes against our guiding principles and take a zero-tolerance approach to any breach of our equine welfare policies.

“These historic allegations are deeply upsetting for everyone involved in our sport, but we fully support the FEI investigation and will take any appropriate disciplinary action when this process is complete. Our priority now is to rally behind our athletes and horses representing Team GB in Paris as they take on the responsibility of showcasing the best of our sport on the world stage.”

BEF performance director and Equestrian Team GB leader Helen Nicholls said the events of the past 24 hours had been “disappointing on many levels for all affected”.

“No one more than Charlotte Dujardin recognises the part welfare holds in sport and as such has done the right thing in stepping down to allow the FEI tribunal to take place in a timely manner,” she said. “Our focus remains on supporting our athletes to deliver to their potential on the world stage and we look forward to the Games getting under way on Saturday.”

Charlotte Dujardin suspended owing to conduct ‘contrary to the principles of horse welfare’

The FEI has provisionally suspended Charlotte Dujardin over a video that shows her “engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare”.

H&H reported this afternoon (23 July) that Charlotte had announced she had withdrawn from the dressage team for the Paris Olympics owing to an “error of judgement”, in a coaching session four years ago, captured in a video that has emerged.

The FEI has now officially announced she has been suspended from today, pending the outcome of the investigation/disciplinary proceedings. British Equestrian has mirrored the suspension, so she may not participate in any national or international events during this time.

“On 22 July 2024, the FEI received a video depicting Ms Dujardin engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare,” an FEI spokesperson said. “This video was submitted to the FEI by a lawyer representing an undisclosed complainant.

“According to the information received, the footage was allegedly taken several years ago during a training session conducted by Ms Dujardin at a private stable.

“Upon receiving the video, the FEI promptly initiated an investigation. As part of this investigation, Ms Dujardin, British Equestrian and British Dressage were informed of the allegations. Ms Dujardin was given a deadline of 17:00 Swiss time on 23 July to respond to the allegations. Subsequently, Ms Dujardin confirmed that she is the individual depicted in the video and acknowledged that her conduct was inappropriate.”

The FEI said Charlotte asked to be provisionally suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, and voluntarily withdrew from the Paris Games, as well as confirming that she would not take part in any competitions while the investigation is ongoing.

“The FEI condemns any conduct contrary to the welfare of horses and has robust rules in place to address such behaviour,” the spokesperson said. “Our commitment to ensuring the highest standards of equine welfare and sportsmanship remains unwavering.

“The FEI acknowledges the cooperation of Charlotte Dujardin, British Equestrian, and British Dressage with the ongoing investigation and intends to proceed as swiftly as possible.”

Charlotte said in her statement today: “What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment.

“I am sincerely sorry for my actions and devastated that I have let everyone down, including Team GB, fans and sponsors.”

FEI president Ingmar de Vos said the FEI was “deeply disappointed with this case”, especially as the Olympics are so near.

“However, it is our responsibility and crucial that we address any instances of abuse, as equine welfare cannot be compromised,” he said.

“Charlotte has expressed genuine remorse for her actions, and we recognise and appreciate her willingness to take responsibility. Despite the unfortunate timing, we believe this action reaffirms the FEI’s commitment to welfare as the guardians of our equine partners and the integrity of our sport.”

The FEI will make no more comments on the matter until the investigation is concluded.

‘I am deeply ashamed’: Charlotte Dujardin withdraws from British Olympic team after ‘error of judgement’

Charlotte Dujardin has withdrawn from the British team for the Paris Olympics, over what she described as an “error of judgement”.

The two-time Olympic champion had been due to represent Britain on Imhotep but in a statement today (23 July), confirmed that she has withdrawn from all competition.

“A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgement during a coaching session,” she said.

“Understandably, the [FEI] is investigating and I have made the decision to withdraw from all competition – including the Paris Olympics – while this process takes place.

“What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment.

“I am sincerely sorry for my actions and devastated that I have let everyone down, including Team GB, fans and sponsors.”

Charlotte Dujardin added that she will fully cooperate with the FEI, British Equestrian and British Dressage during the investigation and will make no further comment until this process is complete.

The other British Olympic dressage team combinations are Carl Hester and Fame and Lottie Fry and Glamourdale. Becky Moody and Jagerbomb were the named alternate combination.

‘I don’t think about the records’: Charlotte Dujardin on her priorities and preparations for Paris

Charlotte Dujardin could become Britain’s most decorated female athlete of all time if she wins a medal of any colour at the Paris Olympics – but as she tells Horse & Hound it’s not the records and statistics that drive her.

“I don’t really think about that,” she confesses. “My job is to go out there and do my best, which is what I try to do each time I compete.

“It’s such an honour and a privilege to be able to ride for your country but at the end of the day, that centre line is no different to any other centre line I’m going to ride down and I won’t change my approach just because it’s an Olympics.

“I try not to put too much pressure on myself. I’ll just go in and ride the best test I can. That’s good enough for me – everything else is a bonus.”

Rather than the records or medals, it’s when she’s talking about the horses that Charlotte lights up the most.

“My work is my passion – I love it, and I love developing horses through the levels,” she explains.

This summer she’ll be riding Imhotep – or “Pete” as he is known at home.

“He’s taken on so much as a young horse,” she adds “He went to the World Championships as a nine-year-old, then the Europeans last year at 10 and now coming to the Olympics at 11.

“He’s incredible and he’s getting better and better. He’s a bit of a difficult shape but he has so much heart and he’s so talented in the piaffe, the passage, and pirouettes.

“I’ve then also trained my reserve horse Alive And Kicking to grand prix as well as Carl’s reserve horse En Vogue and then Freestyle who will be competing for Denmark with Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour.

“Gio, my ride at Tokyo was also longlisted for Paris with Annabella Pidgley.

“That’s a lot of horses, and it was only until someone pointed out to me how many top-level horses I’ve trained that I thought, ‘Oh God, I have actually done a really good job’.”

Since the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Charlotte has become a mother, with daughter Isabella born in March 2023.

She said becoming a parent had changed her perspective on competing.

“Trying to make Isabella proud and having her there means the world to me, knowing that one day she’ll be able to watch it all back and see what I’ve achieved. I hope it will inspire her,” she says.

“Whether it’s in dressage or some other sport, I hope to be a good example.

“That’s what it’s all about, inspiring the younger generations to be active and to take up and follow their dreams.

“I know in dressage everyone says you need loads of money to do the sport but I came from not a lot and I’ve managed to achieve what I’ve achieved through working hard – so I’d say don’t listen to people who say you can’t.”

The most decorated British dressage team ever assembled – what you need to know for Paris

The long-anticipated announcement has arrived and we now know for certain the British riders for the Olympic dressage in Paris.

The selected horse and riders are Carl Hester (Fame), Charlotte Dujardin (Imhotep) and Lottie Fry (Glamourdale), with Becky Moody (Jagerbomb) as the reserve. Let’s get to know them a little better…

Previous Olympics: Despite being among the best dressage horses in the world, none of the horses travelling to Paris have ever competed at an Olympics. But that’s not the case for the riders. Carl will be competing at his seventh Olympics – becoming only the second Brit ever to do so. Charlotte – competing at her fourth Olympics – could become the most decorated British female Olympian of all time should she claim a medal of any colour in Paris. For Lottie, this will be her second Olympics, having competed in Tokyo with Glamourdale’s stablemate and Imhotep’s sire Everdale.
Stable names: Imhotep is Pete, Glamourdale is Glammy, Jagerbomb is Bomb, and Fame – well he’s just Fame! All four are Dutch warmbloods, Imhotep and Jagerbomb are geldings, while Fame and Glamourdale are stallions.

Horse medals: Glamourdale, Imhotep and Fame were all part of the gold medal-winning team at last year’s European Championships in Riesenbeck. Galmourdale is also the reigning double world champion, having won the grand prix special (82.5%) and the freestyle (90.65%) at the 2022 World Championships in Herning – in doing so they became Britain’s first individual gold medallist at any championship since Valegro won gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Glamourdale also won individual silver in the freestyle at last summer’s European Championships, while Imhotep won individual bronze in both the special and the freestyle.

Rider medals: As a trio, Charlotte, Lottie and Carl Hester are the most decorated British dressage athletes ever. Charlotte boasts an impressive record with six Olympic medals, including three golds and a silver with Valegro, and a double bronze with Gio. Additionally, she has secured six World Championship medals, 12 European Championship medals and has twice won the Dressage World Cup. Carl Hester is not far behind with three Olympic medals: team gold in London with Uthopia, team silver in Rio with Nip Tuck, and team bronze in Tokyo with En Vogue. He also has three World Championship medals and eight European medals. Lottie Fry, the youngest of the three, was part of the bronze-medal-winning team in Tokyo on Everdale who she also won team silver with at the 2021 European Championships. With Glamourdale, she has added three World Championship medals and two European medals to her name.

Youngest and oldest horses: Jagerbomb is the youngest at 10 and Fame is the oldest at 14. Glamourdale is 13 while Imhotep is 11.
Youngest and oldest riders: Lottie is – remarkably – still only 28, Charlotte is 39, Becky 44, while Carl Hester will be Team GB’s oldest athlete at 57.
What the riders say: Becky: “Jagerbomb has such an incredible brain and a heart that just wants to do it… there’s still so much to come from him.” Charlotte: “Imhotep has taken on so much as a young horse… he’s incredible and he’s getting better and better.” Carl: “Occasionally in your life, you get a horse who you feel just fits you, and Fame fits… his enthusiasm makes him a dream horse.” Lottie: “I’ve never sat on anything like Glamourdale before, he’s always been so special… he’s a showman and wants everyone’s eyes on him.”

Charlotte Dujardin poised to make Olympic history in Paris

Charlotte Dujardin could become Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian of all time, having been selected as a member of the dressage team for the Paris Olympics.

Charlotte has won six Olympic dressage medals, three of which are gold. This means she is equal with former cyclist Dame Laura Kenny, but winning a medal of any colour in Paris would send Charlotte to the top of the list.

Charlotte’s first medals came at the London 2012 Olympics, where she won both team and individual dressage gold medals on Valegro – Britain’s first Olympic medals in dressage.

The pair went on to successfully defend their individual title and secured a team dressage silver at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Their gold medal in Rio made Charlotte the first British woman ever to retain an individual Olympic title. She also broke the Olympic freestyle record in the process with 93.86%.

With Valegro Charlotte is also still the current overall world record holder in all three tests, achieving a remarkable 87.460% in the grand prix at London CDI-W in 2014, 88.022% in the grand prix special at Hagen CDI in 2012, and 94.300% in the freestyle at London CDI-W also in 2014.

Charlotte competed without Valegro at an Olympics for the first time in Tokyo. Riding Gio she won individual and team bronze, bringing her total medal count to six.

This achievement surpassed British rower Dame Katherine Grainger and tennis player Kathleen McKane Godfree’s records, making Charlotte the then-most decorated British female Olympian.

Laura claimed the title the following week. Charlotte will be looking to reclaim it and make history as she rides at her fourth Olympics in Paris on Carl Hester and Coral Ingham’s 11-year-old gelding Imhotep – her first ride since Valegro to break the 90% barrier in international competition.

Charlotte Dujardin on Paris Olympics: “We will do our absolute best”

Britain are strong favourites for a spot on the podium, alongside Germany and Denmark. Imhotep is also individually one of the best horses in the world and looks to be hitting form at exactly the right time.

But he will face serious competition for the individual medals from teammate Lottie Fry and reigning undisputed world champion Glamourdale, Olympic champions Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB, as well as Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour on Charlotte’s former ride Mount St John Freestyle.

“The biggest thank you to every person who has helped along the way… to the team at home, my amazing and supportive partners, close friends and family,” Charlotte said, reflecting on her selection.

“And to everyone who has followed and joined me on this journey so far… I so hope we do you proud. All I can promise is we will do our absolute best, try our hardest, and while there take a moment to enjoy and appreciate how lucky we are to have our incredible horses in our lives; and to be able to do what we love so much.”

British Olympic dressage team for Paris 2024 revealed: who’s made the cut?

The British Olympic dressage team for Paris 2024 has been announced, with Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin, Lottie Fry and Becky Moody all selected.

This is breaking news and at this stage, it hasn’t been confirmed which three riders will be competing and who will be the reserve.

Carl is set to compete in his seventh Games and will be riding the 14-year-old stallion Fame, the horse who partnered Carl to the highest score of his entire career to date – 85.46% in the freestyle at the 2023 European Dressage Championships.

Charlotte will be riding Imhotep – her first ride since Valegro to break the 90% barrier in international competition – and will become Britain’s most decorated female Olympian should she claim a medal of any colour in Paris.

Lottie will be competing at her second Olympics, this time on the reigning world champion, Glamourdale. While Becky Moody will be travelling to her first-ever Olympics with her crowd-favourite Jagerbomb.

“I’m delighted that we are fielding the strongest dressage team that we have ever sent to an Olympic Games,” said Judy Harvey, British Dressage’s International Director.

“The strength, depth and experience of all four combinations gives us plenty to be hopeful for. Congratulations to all the riders who have campaigned brilliantly with the goal of producing peak performances in Paris.

“We’re looking forward to cheering on the riders and their support teams, and I hope you will all join me in showing your support from home and from Paris.”

‘I’m saving something for Paris’: Imhotep imperious as Carl Hester debuts new music

Charlotte Dujardin and Imhotep continued their preparations for the Paris Olympics by winning the CDI3* grand prix (79.89%) and grand prix special (77.64%) at the Wellington International Festival of Dressage (4-11 June).

Wellington will play a key role in the final decisions of the selectors for Paris. There are no more home internationals scheduled between now and the definite entries selection meeting on or around 17 June.

Charlotte and Imhotep look to be shoo-ins for a team spot. And as combinations across Europe race to impress selectors, their scores compare favourably to other medal contenders.

Charlotte Dujardin on Imhotep: “You don’t want to do your best test now”

Imhotep’s grand prix score at Wellington was higher than Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Dalera’s 78.64% at this weekend’s German Dressage Championships (6–9 June) and Lottie Fry and Glamourdale’s 78.94% at the recent Aachen Dressage Days CDI3* (21–22 May).

Of course, it is difficult to compare scores from different sets of judges, but the fact five judges at Wellington will also be part of the judging panel for the Olympic dressage competition in Paris should give Charlotte cause for optimism.

“I’m 100% saving something for Paris,” said Charlotte. “He’s a hot horse but he stayed with me and was so rideable – and he’s still improving.

“This is a very important competition pre-Paris, especially having five Olympic judges here. It’s good to see where we are, to peak at the right time. You don’t want to do your best test now.”

Mistakes in both sets of tempi changes brought Charlotte’s score down in the special, but that did not seem to concern her too much.

“I had a few errors but that’s what today’s for, to polish it up for Paris,” she said.

Carl Hester: “I haven’t had time to practise it”

Carl Hester and Fame also tightened their grip on a team spot by coming second in the grand prix (77.46%) and winning the freestyle (83.94%) – in which Carl debuted a new floorplan.

“I need to get my timing right to the music, but I haven’t had time to practise it,” Carl said. “I was almost teaching him in the warm-up!

“I’m not a music specialist, but this is really fun. It has a French feeling and I thought, ‘If I ever get to Paris, this is what I’m going down the last centre line to’.”

Carl was also third in the grand prix (71.78%) and second in the special (74.15%) on En Vogue.

The 15-year-old former Olympic team bronze medal winner now looks set to play backup to his younger stablemate again – in a repeat of the battle that played out between them for European selection last year.
