A Mercedes-Benz, a luxury watch, £300,000 cash – no, these are not the prizes in some high-end game show, just some of Nick Skelton’s winnings this season.

Few can remember him enjoying such prolonged and high-calibre success, despite his longevity as one of our top showjumpers.

Since January, the British number one has accumulated more than £300,000 in prize-money, and at least another £35,000 in bonuses, with his Olympic contenders Carlo 273 and Big Star and exciting young horse Unique XVIII.

In Hamburg two weeks ago (17 May), he won a Mercedes-Benz 250 cabriolet- sold on by Nick in Germany as it was left-hand drive – and an engraved Jaeger-LeCoultre watch.

“I don’t think Nick has been on this sort of form since he was jumping Arko,” said Will Connell, World Class performance director for Team GBR.

“The consistent performance of Carlo and Big Star put him right up there. We are so lucky to have owners like the Widdowsons [who also own Unique], who are totally focused on getting Nick to the Olympics, although that may mean missing out on some big prizes on the way.”

Although Carlo is the more experienced horse, there is little to choose between them on current form.

Team manager Rob Hoekstra will have the difficult job of selecting which will be on the Olympic squad.

Nick told H&H: “I wouldn’t like to choose between them for the Olympics. They are both jumping really well and I’d be happy to be there on either.”

The rider – whose career spans 38 years, more than 2,000 wins and at least £5.5million in prize-money – is self-effacing about his own current form.

“It’s just a normal season for me. I’m very pleased with how the horses are going,” he said.

Nick’s next stop is St Gallen with Carlo as part of Team GBR for the Nations Cup (1-3 June) and then the Global Champions Tour in Cannes (14-16 June).

This news story was first published in the current issue of H&H (31 May 2012)

Are you looking to buy a showjumper? She joined the Horse & Hound team in 2005 after her early career working for BBC Sport, where her achievements included being part of the BAFTA-winning production team working on the Commonwealth Games.

She began as an editorial assistant on Horse & Hound before being promoted to look after riding clubs and products in the magazine, and later earning the title of showjumping and racing editor. The racing side of the job temporarily took a back seat, allowing Jen to focus on jumping editorial both in the magazine and online following her maternity leave, but she regathered the racing reins for the printed magazine in November 2020. She has written on every subject in the equestrian sphere — from turnout rugs to stable management — and has interviewed gold medallists, world champions and winners galore.

Despite coming from a distinctly unhorsey family, Jen has enjoyed a life in the saddle since early rides on an elderly Shetland pony sparked a lifelong passion for horses. She was a keen member of the Linlithgow and Stirlingshire, and Fife Hunt branches of the Pony Club while growing up in Scotland and went on to compete primarily in showjumping and eventing, but has been known to try her hand at showing, dressage and even team chasing. She has also worked as a riding instructor and yard manager.

These days, Jen can often be seen out and about reporting at shows, whether on home soil or overseas, as well as interviewing riders, connections and those behind the scenes, and relaying all the latest news. As well as being at two Olympic Games - London 2012 and Paris 2024 - she has covered three European championships for H&H, the 2014 World Equestrian Games, World Cup finals, and numerous legs of the Longines Global Champions Tour, Olympia, Horse of the Year Show, Hickstead Derbys and Nations Cups, travelling as far afield as USA, Qatar, Canada and all over Europe following the showjumping circuit.

Jen is equally happy on a racecourse, however, enjoying the National Hunt season in particular, and writes regularly on the subject. Her pride and joy nowadays is eight-year-old racehorse (born 2018) Merrijig, in whom she owns a share. the bay gelding is a five-time winner on the Flat and trained in Newmarket by John Berry, leading her to spend many happy mornings on the Warren Hill gallops.
</dc:description>

</dc:description>

Nick Skelton and Carlo topped a great weekend for British riders in St Gallen, Switzerland, by landing the 300,000CHF (£220,000) grand prix. On Friday, the pair were part of the British team that finished equal second in the FEI Nations Cup.

A torrential storm brought the first round of the grand prix to a temporary halt, but Nick and the 10-year-old Holstein stallion went on to produce the quickest of five double clears, relegating USA’s Rich Fellers (Flexible) into second place.

Nick said: “He’s still relatively inexperienced, but it’s all going right and I couldn’t ask for more from him. I always thought he was a super young horse when I saw him as a five-year-old. I was fortunate to get him when he was seven and he hasn’t proved me wrong — he is everything you could want in a horse.”

In the third leg of the 2011 FEI Nations Cup, the British team of Tim Stockdale (Fresh Direct Kalico Bay), Robert Smith (Talan), Scott Brash (Intertoy Z) and Nick Skelton (Carlo) finished in equal second behind the Netherlands. The stand-out performance of the competition was Scott’s double clear.

See full report from St Gallen in Horse & Hound (16 June, 2011)

Stay in touch with all the news in the run-up to and throughout the major shows and events during 2026 and beyond with a Horse & Hound subscription. Subscribe today for all you need to know ahead of these major events, plus online reports on the action as it happens from our expert team of reporters and in-depth analysis in our special commemorative magazines.
