I’ve collated your need-to-know information for the 2026 HOYS show horse qualifiers, which includes hunters, hacks, riding horses, cobs, and working hunters in one place.

Negotiating where to go to secure Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) qualifications for your horses is no mean feat, and I know first-hand how hard it is to find qualifier details and keep on top of planning your season, so this should help make it easier.

While the HOYS showing qualifiers list has been announced for 2026, the some fixtures are still confirming their judges. So I’m frequently updating this page with all the new details as they are released so it can be your one-stop-shop for planning your qualification.

Day two of the Royal Windsor Horse Show proved a lucky one for Will Morton. Will punctuated a red letter day in which he first claimed his third cob championship by taking the 2026 Royal Windsor small hunter spoils – sponsored by the Trembath family – astride Red Valentine II (Vinny).

Vinny was bred by Maurice O’Mara out of Knockbrack Spirit and by Lagans Obos Quality.

The six-year-old was purchased from Val Sheehan by his owner Rosamund Lane in 2024 before making his show-ring debut last term with Will, now based in Essex with fellow producer Justine Armstrong Small.

“Last year was his first season and he only did a handful of shows,” Will said. “He went to HOYS and he was a bit green, but it was his first time there.”

Despite being just lightly campaigned, Vinny certainly made his mark. He won the novices here, collected a Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) pass at the hunter championships, then staked the supreme hunter title at the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) championships, judged by seven-time Olympian Mark Todd.

“He’s taken to the job like a duck to water,” said Will. “He’s probably one of the easiest horses I’ve ever had to produce, and so far he’s had a wicked year.

“He’s just phenomenal – something out of this world.”

The pair have campaigned three shows so far this season, and remain unbeaten in small hunter ranks, having taken champion at British Show Pony Society (BSPS) Area 16 and a win at the BSHA Spring show.

Jayne Ross fielded yet another top-two placing finishing runner up in the 2026 Royal Windsor small hunter ranks here. This time she was astride Ryan Anderson and Jamie Smyth’s Irish-bred seven-year-old grey gelding Highview Overado, the reigning HOYS small hunter of the year.

It can be difficult to stay motivated when riding before or after work means tacking up in darkness and your gateways are ankle-deep in mud, so to get you off the sofa and into the saddle, I’ve rounded up the amateur showing classes, championships and finals you can try this year.

Spring shows will soon be kicking off and with a summer season just around the corner, there are plenty of opportunities for amateurs to qualify for prestigious shows. Just remember, before you enter a show, you must make sure that you consult the rules on amateur status, as there are variations between societies.

Amateur showing opportunities 2026

1. SEIB Search For A Star

SEIB’s Search for a Star (SFAS) series is a brilliant stepping stone between grassroots and affiliated competition for both in-hand and ridden competitors. To be eligible to compete at their series of qualifiers and their finals, you have to fit their strict amateur criteria.

If you’re lucky enough to win, then half their championships are hosted at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), and the other half hosted at Your Horse Live. As well as their own shows, the SFAS series has its own team of judges who are all super-experienced in the ring, and will offer showing tips and advice on how to make the best of your exhibit.

2. Show Teams And Rising Stars (STARS)

Offering an all-singing, all-dancing glitzy experience, STARS is a favourite on the grassroots and Riding Club showing enthusiast’s calendar. Quite literally thousands of Riding Club members attempt qualification for the November finals held at Aintree Equestrian Centre each year.

For your chance to compete, you’ll need to be a member of one of 60 affiliated riding clubs, and collect points at the relevant shows. As well as competing individually, members can accumulate points for their club’s team, too.

3. The Showing Register’s amateur-only HOYS tickets

The Showing Register (TSR) offers unique tickets to HOYS. You can bag a ticket by winning an amateur-only HOYS qualifier at their summer show, or sign up for their amateur league for the chance to make consistency count. Competitors in the league earn points through the season, with winners from each division gaining a golden ticket.

4. TSR Amateur of the Year Championships

TSR’s Amateur of the Year championships, run for the first time in 2025 at Stoneleigh Park, was a resounding success and is set to run again in late November this year. There you’ll find festive fun in abundance, and a HOYS-esque experience for home-produced amateurs only.

5. BSPS Pretty Polly

The British Show Pony Society’s (BSPS) Pretty Polly classes are for home-produced pony exhibitors and are an enduring favourite. The finals are held at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS), so they offer a second class for those competing at open level, as well as a chance for younger and less experienced combinations to compete alongside – rather than against – showing greats at one of our most iconic showgrounds.

6. UK P&H Amateur M&M final

Mountain and moorland exhibitors are lucky, because as well as the mixed-breed Pretty Polly final, they also have an amateur final hosted by the UK Ponies & Horses to contend at Hickstead.

7. BSHA Amateurs

Similarly, horse exhibitors have a range of amateur classes hosted at the RIHS, and governed by the British Show Horse Association (BSHA). Horses in these classes can be produced, offering riders whose circumstances mean they cannot keep a horse ticking-over themselves to compete against fellow amateurs.

There are, however, prizes for the highest placed home-produced combinations in each of these classes, and new for 2026 is a home-produced championship, where all of the highest placed home-produced horses will be pitted against each other.

8. BSHA Rising Star

Want strictly home-produced horse classes but still want to ride at one of the show season’s biggest events? Look to the BSHA’s range of Rising Star classes at the London International Horse Show (LIHS).

There are a range of classes for different types of horses, including working show horse classes, and Style and Performance classes that are judged entirely on performance with no conformation aspect, hopefully enticing owners of all types over 148cm. One benefit for those dipping a toe in showing for the first time is that there is no requirement for your horse to be ridden by a ride judge.

9. RoR Amateur Ridden Show Series

The Jockey Club’s Retraining of Racehorses have the RoR Amateur Ridden Show Series that culminates in a fabulous championship at the iconic Hickstead Derby Meeting in June. The top three from each qualifier go forwards to the final.

10. SSADL finals

If you’re home produced and have a veteran horse or pony, then look at the Senior Showing and Dressage Ltd’s offering. They run finals at both the RIHS and LIHS. Qualifiers are held at their championships and affiliated shows including Royal Windsor Horse Show.

11. New VHS championship

The Veteran Horse Society (VHS) have announced that they have a brand new final hosted at HOYS. This newest championship for our treasured veteran horses is open to amateurs only.

12. BSPA home-produced championship

For coloured horses and ponies, there is a special championship for the highest placed home-produced exhibit in each of the British Skewbald and Piebald Association (BSPA) classes at the RIHS.

13. Your society championships

From the National Pony Society (NPS) to the Coloured Horse And Pony Society (CHAPS) and the Sport Horse Breeding GB (SHB (GB)), your society will play host to a plethora of amateur-only classes and finals at their shows and championships. Usually there are some you’ll need to qualify for beforehand, while others you can enter on the day.

Family teams came up trumps in the 2025 Rising Stars working show horse championship at London International Horse Show (LIHS), taking the top two spots then the overall spoils, warding off stiff competition from the working hunter ranks.

A nine-hour trip was made well worth it for south Pembrokeshire resident Grace Gibbon, who lifted the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) 2025 Rising Stars working show horse championship with her mother Heather Gibbon’s The Granite Way (Fern).

“We bought her two years ago from friends in Ireland,” explained Grace. “She’d done a little bit of jumping and eventing, but we just bought her to share and have some fun on after Mum decided she would quite like a happy hacker that we could share around working full time – I’m a chartered surveyor and Mum’s a nurse.”

Although the family used to show when Grace was a child, showing Fern wasn’t initially on the mother-daughter team’s agenda.

“We never in a million years were planning to show – it’s been such an unexpected joy to be able to. Mum takes her to riding club every week and does some dressage with her but the showing happened by accident really. We thought we would have a go and it’s escalated from there. With me working away, we just do what we can.”

Grace and Fern have had an excellent season, finishing runner up in the Search For A Star working hunter final at Horse of the Year Show this season.

“We’re very fortunate to have these opportunities such as here to compete as true amateurs and we’re really grateful to the organisers for these opportunities.”

Looking to the future, Grace is adamant that Fern has “a home for life” with her and Heather.

“She’s a horse we’re both so lucky to have and enjoy. We’ll just carry on enjoying her for as long as we can. As long as she’s happy and healthy, we’ll keep going with her.”

Sister act reserve in the 2025 Rising Stars working show horse championship

Warwickshire-based Anne Grindal rode her sister Helen Forster’s HS Queen Bea to the reserve spot, having come second in the working show horse class.

Helen bought the Rush On M daughter as a foal, and both sisters have since bought more youngsters by the KWPN stallion.

“She has this great, ‘come on, what are we going to do next?’ attitude, which is probably what gives her that bit of sparkle in the ring,” Anne said.

Initially, Helen – who had previously competed Bea at London – had qualified her for the 2025 final, but a scheduled knee operation meant that she would be unable to ride her at the final, and asked her sister to step in.

“She’s about 10 weeks post surgery now,” said Anne. “So she’s sat back on, but could never have competed. She’s been bringing her over for me to ride once, twice or three times a week – I have my own horses and children – so it’s been dependent on what we can do.”

Although it was only Anne’s second show in over 10 years, and she was “out of my comfort zone,” Anne and eight-year-old Bea gave a polished performance.

“I keep my own horses, and have team-chased and so on with my own, but showing is Helen’s thing,” said Anne.

Although the BSHA sanctioned a swap of riders, the sisters decided it would be nice for Anne to have a go at the qualifiers too. Bea and Anne clicked, and won a qualifier their first time out together.

Not to be left out of the action entirely, Helen was able to groom for Anne in the ring.

“She was there with us,” said Anne, “which was lovely – there were even tears.”

Grace and Anne fought off competition from Mia Jarrett who won the working hunter with her own Master Pocket Rocket, and second-placed combination Kate Ward and Leopold.

It was a maxi-cob one-two coup in the 2025 Rising Stars cob championship at London International Horse Show (LIHS).

Jocelyn Cleveland was visibly stunned to land the maxi cob and the 2025 Rising Stars cob championship aboard her good friend Susanna O’Reilly Hyland’s maxi mare, De Kobdashian (Elsa).

“It’s just the most incredible feeling ever,” said Jocelyn. “I just wasn’t expecting this. I was so nervous beforehand about coming to London and the whole thing, and all I wanted was for her to go in and behave. I just couldn’t have been more proud of how she did cope with it all.”

Such was Jocelyn’s shock, she couldn’t even believe it when she was initially pulled top.

“I looked around me because I thought, ‘no, they’re not calling me’. But Vicky Smith was at the side stewarding and she told me to go into line.”

Susanna bought the eight-year-old 2019 Dublin Horse Show cob champion on Christmas Eve four years ago, from Kieran Price. He had had lightly campaigned her, having brought her here from Ireland where she was shown by Jodie Moran.

“My friend Russell Ingram originally found her for us. We went to see her and Russell actually did show her the first season we had her, but conceded that he looked too big on her. We’d taken her to Lynn Russell’s for lessons, so then Lynn did a bit on her.”

During this time, Jocelyn was gelling with Elsa at home.

“We just click. She is sensitive but I trust her and I think she trusts me; she knows I love her. She’s always given me such fun so I said to Susanna I would love to have a go showing her.”

The pair have had a super run this season, finishing eighth at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS), holding their own among the professionals, and second at Edenbridge and Oxted Show. They also won two London qualifiers.

Elsa and Jocelyn have also turned a hoof to the working show horse classes: “She does love her jumping, so we’ve just been just having fun and learning together. Then maybe we will try and do the Rising Star working show horse class.”

Style and performance

Taking the reserve spot were second-placed maxi contenders Samantha Hodgson-Clarke and her own Grane Valley Mr Newark (Yogi), a striking dapple grey big-moving part-bred Percheron x Gelderlander. Samantha has owned seven-year-old Yogi since a foal, having placed a deposit on him at just four days old. The versatile and mannerly Yogi also qualified for the style and performance under-25 class with 15-year-old Madison Slattery.

Also forward for the 2025 Rising Stars cob championship were the winners and runners up in the earlier lightweight or heavyweight cob class.

Kristiane Tobin and her own Brookdale Just In Time (Justin) were undaunted by the prospect of being first to give their individual show, landing the top spot ahead of Charlotte Butler and her own Cobpuccino.

Having not shown properly for 20 years, Kristiane explained that she wanted an experienced horse she could simply take to a show and enjoy.

“I was recommended Justin through a Facebook post and after going to view him, I fell in love with him,” said Kristiane. “He came home and settled straight away as a cheeky chap – he loves Guinness and demolishes Lickits.”

Kristiane and Justin also enjoy hacking and “popping a few jumps,” but Justin’s forte is showing. “He loves to show off – he knows his job and thoroughly enjoys himself.”

The pair qualified at the Royal Welsh Spring Festival and says that although she was “a nervous wreck in the ring here, she’d “love to give Horse of the Year Show a go”.

Kristiane is quick to credit her “amazing instructor”, Marina Evans, who also trains 2025 Rising Stars hack and riding horse champions, Rosa Cartwright and Greenvale Don Legend.

“None of this would’ve been possible without her,” said Kristiane, “she hasn’t only developed out partnership but has also put up with my anxiety.”

A “bargain pony” was crowned British Show Horse Association (BSHA) 2025 Rising Stars hack and riding horse champion at the London International Horse Show with his Cardiff-based owner.

There was rapturous applause from onlookers as a visibly shocked, and later teary, Rosa Cartwright and her 12-year-old Greenvale Don Legend (Donny) were called forwards as winners of the small division. They went on to land the 2025 Rising Stars hack and riding horse champion sash.

Rosa has owned Donny, by Don Perry out of a Welsh mare, since he was a yearling, having bought him from the Greenvale stud near Llanelli.

“I call him my bargain pony. He was advertised for £500, and he had good bloodlines. So we went to see him and found the reason he was £500 was because we couldn’t get near him — he was afraid of life. But we saw him move in the round pen and I decided to take a punt on him. We ushered him into the trailer using a Shetland to persuade him on board,” Rosa said.

“When we got home, we ushered him into a stable and it took me two weeks to catch him – he was feral, so I spent hours in the stable with him trying to persuade him to be brave.”

Initially, Rosa had intended to attempt eventing with Donny, but she found that although he was a “machine” across country, his tendency to be afraid of everything made the showjumping phase difficult. The pair did enjoy dressage, though, under the tutelage of Marina Evans, and attempted showing for the first time three years ago.

“The last couple of years, he’s really grown up, but I never would have thought he’d cope with a show of that calibre. He’s blown me away,” Rosa said.

“The only thing that could have possibly made it better would be to have my mum there. She passed away last year and used to love coming to watch me at all my shows. She was obviously with me every step and shining all the luck down on us, but made it super emotional for us.”

2025 Rising Stars hack and riding horse reserve champion

Second-placed small contender Alicia Matthews riding her own hack Sparkton Royal Fortune (Thumper) finished reserve champion. Bookkeeper Alicia and 10-year-old Thumper, who has been with Alicia for five years, have progressed together through the intermediate ranks and enjoyed a stellar season in amateur classes, securing the home-produced supreme sash at Equifest this summer. This was their first visit to London, and they will also compete in the style and performance final this week.

“I’ve waited 50 years for this”

Amanda Court and Jupiter C (Fletcher) landed the large spoils ahead of Annie McAndrew and her own Sky. Fletcher, 11, was initially bought by his owners, the Hoose family, as a showjumper, but it soon became apparent he would make a show horse. They offered the ride to Amanda, a family friend, who gladly took him on.

Amanda used to show, but gave way to her children’s showing ambitions and later, her grandchildren’s ponies, ensuring all are turned out immaculately. Fittingly, Amanda and Fletcher also took the best turned out award in the class.

“I’m 60 now, and I’ve probably waited 50 years for this,” she said in the ring.

Their path to London was not straightforward. They initially qualified at Kent County, but as Amanda did not have the correct registrations, they lost their ticket and had to reattempt qualification, which they secured at the BSHA championships.

The first of the season’s British Show Horse Association (BSHA) Rising Stars championships heads north to Yorkshire as a racing head girl and her “pet” were crowned 2025 Rising Stars hunter champions at the London International Horse Show (LIHS).

An emotional Kaitlin Mason landed the BSHA Rising Stars small and heavyweight hunter title with her own Questiontime (Alfie) then landed the overall 2025 Rising Stars hunter champion spot.

Stokesley-based Kaitlin, who works at trainer Luci and Brian Hughes’ Tullyvalley Equine Services, has owned the upstanding 13-year-old Welsh part-bred, by Welsh cob stallion Lowhaygarth The Goldsmith out of a thoroughbred mare, since the 2020 lockdown. Kaitlin explained that when she bought Alfie from her then boss, riding school owner Jennifer Brookes, she didn’t intend to show him.

“I just bought him because he was a lovely person.,” she said. “He was the first horse I’d bought just for me as a pet and to hack about on; there was no end game in mind – just a bit of local dressage.”

But Alfie had different ideas.

“He’d done nothing and had never been away from home, but I quickly found that he really enjoys the limelight,” said Kaitlin. “He’s a gentle giant, though. He’s great with the children and being a part of family life. My parents aren’t horsey and they can easily manage him, and he adapts to whatever situation he’s in – a really genuine horse.”

It was a case of third time lucky for the pair here, who have also stood runners-up in the Search For A Star series at Horse of the Year Show and at STARS, and Kaitlin now intends to let Alfie enjoy a slower paced life:

“We may do some working hunter classes, but for now he’ll step down and have a bit of time away from the showing scene. He’s given me the most amazing three years, travelled up and down the country and never once given me a moment’s blip so I feel I owe it to him to let him be the family horse we always intended him to be.”

2025 Rising Stars hunter champion reserves

Sally Iggulden repeated her 2024 success to stand reserve. This time, she was riding her own Strinesdale Marksman (Oscar), who was placed second in the small/ lightweight final. The moment punctuated a brilliant season for Sally and her faithful Oscar, who scored six championships from six outings in the run-up to London, including at Midland Counties, Ashby and perhaps most notably, Driffield show, at which Sally had waited 25 years to lift the hunter spoils.

Also enjoying a win on their third attempt here were Katie Radcliffe and her own Kinsale Irish Emerald, winners of the middle and heavyweight final. The pair – who will also take a turn around the LIHS workers final – qualified at one of the earliest opportunities of the season, the Wiltshire Spring Show. Runner-up in the class was also an early ticket holder, Cwmmeudwy Spring Saalut and his south-Wales based owner-rider Lisa Jones, who qualified at the Royal Welsh Spring Festival in May. The pair were also bridesmaids at the recent The Showing Register Amateur of the Year hunter championship.

Bagging the best condition award in the small and lightweight division was 15-year-old London debutante Grace Morgan and her Connemara gelding Clooniereen Silver Knight, who will also compete in the Rising Stars style and performance final this week. The equivalent award in the middle and heavyweights division was Kate Over riding Birthday Blues, who also finished fourth.

If you’re competing in the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) Rising Star hack, riding horse or cob finals at the London International Horse Show (LIHS), then it’s time to grab a notebook. Rising Star hack, riding horse and cob judge Danielle Heath gives us insight into her background in horses, and tells us what she will be looking for when she is judging.

Who is LIHS Rising Star judge Danielle Heath?

Showing buffs and followers of horse classes will without doubt have heard of Danielle, who is currently one of our leading producers, particularly of hacks, riding horses, hunters, cobs, and ladies’ show horses. Just this year, we’ve seen Danielle lift notable championships including at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) where she was champion cob astride Mr Vincent, and lifted the riding horse title there with Times Square II for the third time. Other highlights you may have witnessed include partnering uber-successful hack Forgeland Hyde Park to stand reserve supreme at Hickstead in 2022, and 2023 supreme champion at Horse of the Year Show.

Danielle Heath’s equestrian background

“When my mother and father were in their thirties, they decided to learn to ride,” says Danielle. “They both went and had riding lessons, got the bug, and quite quickly, they got into hunting, and joined the Cheshire Forest hunt, and that was it. I was about four years old at the time, and so I grew up with horses around me.

“We moved to the property where I am now, which had stables, and so I had ponies around me from a young age. Mum would enjoy buying youngsters and all sorts that couldn’t have much done with them, especially from the Beeston sales. She would bring them home and we’d play around with them, and then Mum would sell them again. She really enjoyed a project.”

Danielle explains that she and her older sister Aysha started competing in showing at local level in the cradle stakes classes, before moving onto nursery stakes and moving up through the working hunter pony divisions.

“Aysha lost interest in showing and went eventing, but I stayed with it and grew to love it. Show hunter ponies were introduced when I was about 13 years old, and Mum found a pony called Morning Melody, a 143cm, at a local riding club show. She bought it, and we went on to win the Royal International with her. And that was it; then I really had the showing bug.”

Despite Danielle enjoying an early win at Hickstead, she had to wait 20 years longer for a win at HOYS.

“I was a latecomer,” she jokes. “I had to wait until I was 37 years old and then I won the middleweight hunters with Oathill Take The Biscuit, and went on to stand hunter champion.”

Danielle’s original career ambition was to become a graphic designer, but her life changed when her mother became unwell when she was just 17 years old, and she left school.

“That was my passion, and horses were my hobby. But then after I sadly lost my mum at 21, I was torn as to what to do. Horses became a kind of saviour through the grieving process, and I gained comfort from showing. When I went to shows, the showing community was like family to me, because they were people I’d grown up with. Showing was a comfort blanket.

“Still, there are certain shows such as Royal Windsor where we went as a family from when I was about nine years old, and the memories remind me of my mum every time I go to those showgrounds.

“In a way I fell into producing, as people asked me to carry on riding horses that they had bought from me. That’s how it all progressed.”

Prior judging experience

Danielle started judging early in her career, having graduated to the Sport Horse Breeding (SHB GB) panel when she was just 22 years old.

“Royal Windsor was one of my early appointments; I was 23, and it was a huge thing for me, because again it’s such an important show to me, and to be judging was a massive honour,” she explains.

“The likes of David Tatlow, Robert Oliver, Bill Bryant, Jilly Tatlow, Ali Oliver and Guy Landau in the ring – people I really looked up to. And it was an honour to be riding horses that I’d admired and watched. There was a lightweight hunter called Finn McCool, who was a massive superstar in my eyes – I admired him a lot. I got to judge him there, and I think we had him champion, which was a really special moment for me.”

The other appointment that stands out in Danielle’s memory is her first appointment at HOYS.

“It was 2010 and I judged the ladies horses with John Newborough and that was a special time. He’s a very knowledgeable, kind man and that made the experience even better.”

This will be Danielle’s first appointment at London International.

“It’ll be fantastic to go to the London show for one thing – that’ll be lovely – and to have an opportunity to get in there with the up-and-coming and the newcomers, and to give a bit back to showing which I think we all should do,” she adds.

“I feel passionate about not letting standards drop in what we do. Everybody strives to be better, and I think if we can help people do that and understand why horses win when they win, and to understand about conformation and type and way of going, we can give people a better understanding.”

What will LIHS judge Danielle Heath be looking for in the ring?

At the final, judges of the Rising Star finals are encouraged to decide between them who assesses performance and who assesses ride, and they often swap in between classes. Whichever she’s assessing, Danielle will “want to see a horse that says ‘look at me’, that goes forward, looking through the bridle like it’s enjoying itself,” on the go-round.

Rising Star hacks

“A hack should be elegant and light on its feet,” she says. “And a hack should be quality with manners. A hack’s schooling has got to be ‘bang on’ in terms of transitions and so on.

“I’ll be looking at at the rider, too. It’s important that the rider looks elegant as well in the whole picture.”

Should she be on conformation for the hacks, Danielle says, “A hack should be quality, with good quality, flat bone and no conformation faults. A hack should also be a lovely mover, and a straight mover.”

Rising Star cobs

“In a good cob, I’m looking for something that’s not too heavy on the ground. Although it’s a cob, it should still have lovely, straight, paces and cover the ground. Of course a cob should be workman-like, but they should also have a bit of quality about them,” says Danielle.

“Close up, I’ll want a cob with clean conformation. I’ll want a cob with short cannon bones, nice big knees and a strong second thigh. It should be low to the ground and square, but with a good length of rein.

Rising Star riding horses

“A riding horse has got to have good limbs. They should be between a hack and a hunter, so should have some substance to them with a good depth of girth and a good length of rein.

“Again, a good riding horse should be light on its feet, but cover the ground more than a hack, and it should give a good gallop. It should always be mannerly, too, and looking through the bridle.

LIHS Rising Star judge Danielle Heath’s pet hates

“Yes,” she says. “I hate to see competitors bunched-up on a go-round, and don’t like to see people not give themselves a space. Try to keep plenty of space around you to show your horse off. If you find yourselves in a bunch, use your ring craft and get out of the group into a space of your own.

“I also like to see a good walk. The walk is the first and last thing a judge sees, so make sure your downwards transitions are good and you finish with a good walk that shows your horse off.”

Show horse and pony producer Edward Young’s yard has bidden a sad farewell to prolific hack Classic Chauvanist, who died on 15 September aged 22 after a short and sudden bout of colic.

“Charles” was a prolific winner on the circuit; team Young “lost count” of how many Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) qualifiers he won, including multiple victories at Royal Three Counties, Royal Cheshire Co, the Lincolnshire Show, the Hickstead Derby Meeting, Midlands Counties, Ashbourne, Mid Herts County and the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) National Championships.

“It came on very suddenly and although we got him into hospital, there was nothing they could do for him,” said Edward.

Edward’s mother, Dinah, and Colin Rose bought Charles from his breeders, Annie and Colin Horn of the Classic Stud, when he was six weeks old.

“Charles came to us at two years of age and lived here ever since,” said Edward. “He had three owners during his time here, the last being the Horns, who bought him back from Rose Kelbie in his later years.”

Charles was mainly piloted by Edward and Lyndsey Kelbie during his ridden career, but was occasionally ridden by others in intermediate classes.

Although he was often garlanded at qualifiers, “he never had a lot of luck at HOYS” and a title there eluded him. He was, however, successful at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) and collected a supreme hack title in 2016, two wins and seconds there.

“He was a lovely, kind horse and easy to do in every way,” said Edward. “Except to turn out, or if he saw a horse-drawn carriage, which terrified him.

“We were lucky to have him in our lives. We have a few of his great-nephews and a great-niece on the yard, and they have huge shoes to fill.

“He spent his retirement with my partner Collette’s old hack, Prince Bishop or Theo, who we bred and was also 22. Theo was Charles’ partner in crime and turnout friend for over 15 years, and until Charles’ passing, they were inseparable. He’s as upset as us to lose him.”

A bridesmaid has finally had her moment in the spotlight by taking the 2025 riding horse of the year spot at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), sponsored by Alan Marnie and family.

Vicky Smith and Jane Davies’ home-bred Timolin seven-year-old Tremarl Timpani (Kate) took the 2025 riding horse of the year title having stood reserve at both Royal Windsor and the Royal International earlier in the season.

“She’s so young and she’s only in her second season,” said Vicky, “So for her to have been so consistent all year is amazing. She’s won the Royal International twice, she’s won Windsor, so now that she’s won here it really is fantastic. There were two horses in the championship that beat her at those fixtures, so it’s lovely that this was her turn here.

“I’m also just delighted for her breeder, Jane. She bred Kate with her mum, Olwyn, who’s now 87. Jane’s here to see Kate, and for these small studs, it’s great just to be here, but to be here and go champion is magical.”

And next year?

“There’s no fixed plan for her yet,” said Vicky. “It’s more a case of having some fun with her. She’ll go out in the field now with her mates for the winter and we’ll see about going again next year. Long term I know Jane wants to keep her as a future brood mare but until then… we’ll see.”

Kate is not the first champion Vicky has bred for Jane. Kate’s full brother Tremarl Timber – owned by Vicky’s mum Angela Smith – was overall champion in the Price supreme in-hand final in 2023, shown by Simon Charlesworth on Vicky’s behalf.

“I’ve her full brother taking his first season in his stride and hopefully has big thighs coming; hopefully they’ll be quite the force to reckon with in the future.”

Jane said: “After what her brother did, and now this here, it’s quite overwhelming. Her mum came to the Price final on her mum, so hopefully in the future it would be nice to think we can carry on that legacy with her as a brood mare.”

Reserve for the 2025 riding horse of the year title goes to first home bred

Reserve for the 2025 riding horse of the year title was Jayne Ross with Danni Radford’s home-bred Ladies Man (George), winner of the Alan Marnie and family small riding horse of the year final.

Jayne has enjoyed a “fabulous” season with the nine-year-old son of sport horse stallion Tiger Attack, out of a former hack mare of Danni’s, Looking Glass Image.

“He’s only done three classes this year,” said Jayne. “He was champion at Royal Windsor, champion at New Forest and Hampshire, and now he’s here.”

Before this year George was campaigned successfully as a small hack and Jayne explained more about the swap: “We decided to move him up into the riding horse classes because he’s got such a really big, scopey step and he loves to cover the ground.”

Jayne added: “He’s so reliable in a situation like [today]. He’s lovely, absolutely lovely and he’s not spooky in the slightest. He’s a big scopey mover even though he’s only a little horse, so you have to just go with him, but you can ride him to the bridle and away you go.”

With umpteen championship appearances at HOYS – not to mention at other big shows around the country – what does this mean to Jayne?

“You never stop getting a buzz from riding in a championship like this, especially when you’re on a lovely horse that you can relax and enjoy,” she said. “ Sometimes you go in there slightly wondering whether the horse will stand or what he’ll make of the crowd – but that’s just not the case with him. It was absolutely delicious.”

Proud owner and breeder Danni was “absolutely over the moon” to be ringside watching George, her first and only home-bred in the Andrews Bowen International Arena.

“I never dared breed another! I bought his dam when I was younger and did a bit with her – I actually sold her a couple of times but she kept coming back to me because she was a little bit tricky. So then I put her in foal when I left school and started working and George was the result.

“I never thought he’d do all this, I just thought I had a nice horse. He definitely got his movement from his dad!”

Jayne added: “Danni and her family do him from home most of the time and he comes to visit me every now and then. He’s very much their family pet and – apart from their daughter – he’s the love of their life. It means a lot to them to win here.”

Also in the 2025 riding horse of the year championship were second-placed small riding horse Times Square II, owned by Guy Mears and ridden by Danielle Heath, and second placed large riding horse, Debbie Harrod’s King Of Clubs and James Smyth.

If you have an Arabian horse or a part-bred pony qualified for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) it’s time to take notes, as 2025 HOYS judge David Bennett gives insight into his background in showing, and what he’ll be looking for in the ring.

Meet 2025 HOYS judge David Bennett

David successfully juggles working full-time as a paramedic with producing a mixture of horses and ponies for the show-ring, with help from his sister Amy who is a full-time P.E. teacher.

“It could be I’m working two days in the week and it could be I’m working five,” says David of the juggle. “It just depends on the shift rota.”

Although his mother did have ponies as a child, David’s parents are not horsey, and he admits he has “no idea” where the initial interest in horses hails from.

He explains: “I broke my leg when I was eight, and while I was in hospital, I refused to take my medication. In order to persuade me, my dad said if I took them, I could do whatever I wanted. And what I wanted was to go riding. That’s where it started.”

His first pony was a “working hunter pony” type, kicking off an interest in workers.

“From that, I did a bit of showjumping and went to work for David Bowen when I was 18 working with his showjumpers.

“Then I had another worker – Country Blue Moon – and people told me he was good enough to show, so it went from there. People started asking me to ride their show horses and it spiralled.”

Now, David’s production enterprise is based at Sharon Howarth’s Carrhouse Stud near Preston, and he considers winning the large hacks at HOYS astride Carrhouse Hidden Asset last term as a showing career highlight.

Other highs include multiple wins at Royal Windsor and at the Royal International – he stood reserve at both this season.

Although this is David’s first year judging at HOYS, David is an accomplished judge, having officiated at most of the UK’s leading fixtures, including Royal Windsor, and has judged in South Africa and Australia.

“But the biggest highlight so far would probably be at Windsor, where I rode the late Queen’s horse and had the honour of meeting her,” he says.

David sits on a string of judging panels including the British Skewbald and Piebald Association (BSPA), Coloured Horse and Pony Society (CHAPS), Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), Sport Horse Breeding (SHB (GB)), the Arab Horse Society and heavy horse panels.

What will HOYS judge David Bennett be looking for in the ring, starting with the part-bred ponies?

David will be assessing the conformation phase of the part-bred pony of the year final, while co-judge Clare Dew will be assessing the ride.

“I like to see ponies that look like they want to be there,” says David. “I don’t like them to look flat, and I certainly don’t want them to look fat, either. No fat ponies.

“I also like ponies to be very elegant, and to float along being good movers,” he says. “And they need to have plenty of good quality bone, too.”

As for pet hates?

“The thing that I hate the most is when riders stand up a horse or pony looking flat and like they don’t want to be there. I like a horse or pony to have presence, and to be stood up properly.

What will David be looking for in the Arabian horse of the year class?

For this class, David will be switching his suit for his riding gear and assessing each horse from the saddle.

In the initial go-round, David wants to see a horse going forwards correctly.

“I don’t like to see riders see-sawing on mouths or kicking too much,” says David.

Once on board, he’ll be looking for a horse that is “light in the hand, and forwards. I don’t like them when they’re too lazy.”

Again, movement is important.

“I also like them to really travel and cover the ground – a good mover.”

Overall, he’s looking for “presence, elegance and a little bit of wow factor”.

“I want everything to look easy and effortless,” he concludes.

Any advice for HOYS first-timers?

“If you’re going there for the first time, definitely enjoy it and don’t get stressed about it,” says David. “Even though it’s such a prestigious show, you’ve got to pretend it’s just any other show, otherwise you don’t enjoy it, and then it’s over before you know it.

“And even if it’s your first time, I always think you’ve got to enter the ring like you’re going to win it. As a judge, when you’re in the middle, someone who walks in riding like they are going to win, with their horse marching grabs your attention right away. If you come in head down looking nervous, it looks like you don’t want to be there. Go for it.”

Rebekah Pring and charming Littletons Tiger Lily claimed the 2025 Royal International amateur supreme championship, the final championship of the Agria sponsored show.

The exquisite six-year-old by Tiger Attack floated to the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) amateur hack final en route to the supreme.

Rebekah and her mother Charlotte Coppard purchased Lily as a three-year-old. Lily is produced by Elliee Stunt and is having a tremendous season, being second in the open hacks here and at Royal Windsor, and winning the amateur division at both, too.

“She gives you the most amazing feeling when you are riding her, but this is the best she has ever gone,” said Rebekah.

Her voice cracking with emotion, she continued: “She’s just done so much for us. I so wanted to win here with her – she was second in the amateurs and opens last year – and now she’s done it.”

“It’s his favourite show”: 2025 Royal International amateur supreme reserve

Reserve in the 2025 Royal International amateur supreme went to second placed hack St Giles Devole (Dev) and Phoebe Price, who were last year’s winners of the same hack final.

“He loves Royal International,” said Phoebe. “I think it’s his favourite show, as he always knows it’s time to show off!”

In the four years she has owned Dev, they have clocked impressive results here: “We have had two seconds, two wins and now a reserve supreme amateur.”

Bouncing back from disappointment

Sue Burns’ nine-year-old palomino gelding Ballyfarnon Henry and Kymberly Dunston’s week started with disappointment but ended on a high when they won the BSHA amateur cob final.

The pair had topped their Horse of the Year Show cob class at Stoneleigh the previous weekend but as Kymberly reached forward for her rosette, her hat was knocked out place as it touched Henry’s neck and fell to the floor, meaning automatic disqualification.

“He’s not been an easy ride,” said Sue, “but this is our fourth year here and he’s come into his own. This has been a tonic after last weekend – he’s done brilliantly today.”

Runner up in the amateur cob final was Amy Bennion with her super-consistent Hortons Valentine.

Former racehorse is pick of riding horses

Retrained racehorse Wonga Swinger – 2024 SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse winner – proved he’s now every bit the show horse by taking the amateur riding horse final piloted by his owner Tori Thomas. The pair had stood fifth in the open large riding horse final earlier in the week.

Wonga was owned and trained by Tori’s husband Sam, and after he retired from the track, Tori originally evented and team-chased the Lucky Star 15-year-old.

“He’s just the best,” said Tori, “He’s achieved more than I dreamed possible.”

They pipped Helen Whiteley-John and her Hickstead Derby Meeting champion Absolutely Fashion to the amateur riding horse spoils.

Though not eligible for the supreme, Clare Elding’s Broadriver Ruby Moon topped the final BSHA amateur line-up, the maxi cobs.

Danielle Heath and the charismatic Mr Vincent claimed the 2025 Royal International cob championship, the Surrey Envelopes British Show Horse Association supreme cob title at the Agria-sponsored show.

His shocked owner Isabella Mears Wood just missed the moment catching his lap of honour still in her jacket and breeches having run over from another ring.

“I can’t quite believe it,” said Isabella. “I was in the maxis with my other cob so I think I’m going to have to watch the videos a few times.”

Her disbelief is perhaps quite understandable given Isabella found the 10-year-old after posting an appeal on Facebook for a horse to hack and enjoy at home.

“His former owner Nigel Fuller said, ‘I’ve got just the horse for you. You’ll have loads of fun with him – he’s as honest as the day is long,’ and he is to be fair. I went for one lesson with Danielle and she said, ‘We have to show this horse, he’s a superstar,’” explained Isabella.

He has an undeniably sunny outlook as he goes.

“He’s loving every moment. The bigger the ring, the better he is. He’s just a little showman,” said Danielle.

Reserve champion in the 2025 Royal International cob championship heads to Scotland

In reserve for the 2025 Royal International cob championship was a teary Kirstine Douglas, who was fielding both second-placed cobs. She chose well, opting to ride Morean Hamilton’s 14-year-old lightweight runner-up Mr Bear.

“I’ve had him since a four-year-old,” said Kirstine, clearly moved by the occasion. “When you go into a championship on a second, you just don’t expect anything. This is just a dream. He’s a lovely little horse, he really is. He’s been a super little horse for me.”

Kirstine left Jasean Spraggett to pick up Morean’s Morrows Highwayman’s reins, second in the heavyweight division.

Jayne Ross piloted the jolly goer Hortons Rainman, a nine-year-old recently recruited to new owner Alan Marnie’s team.

In ninth place was Rachel Mccourt’s versatile Firespell piloted by Amelia Hood. He swapped rider and bridle later in the day to top the working show horse with Amelia’s husband Oliver in the saddle for the second time consecutively.

“He jumped so well,” said Oliver, “we’re thrilled with him. He’s a lot of fun.”

Danielle Heath and the charismatic Times Square III claimed their third De La Hey Family British Show Horse Association (BSHA) supreme riding horse championship title at the Agria Royal International Horse Show, having taken the top spot in 2022 and 2023.

Known for his electric ring presence and charming temperament, the now 12-year-old small division winner continues to impress on the biggest stages.

“He’s been with us since a four-year-old, so we’ve seen him all the way through,” said Danielle.

”

“He won Horse of the Year Show for the first time last year, which was the last big accolade to claim. He’s now a three-time champion at Windsor, too. He really is a horse of a lifetime. He’s a little showman; cheeky. Monkey by name, monkey by nature.

“He loves people; he’s a great character who thrives on the attention. He just lifts in that ring and shines.”

Owner Guy Mears was also delighted with the win. He said: “I’m so proud. Danielle has produced him to perfection all these years,” he said. “To come back and do the hat-trick, the pressure mounts every year with expectation, but it’s as special now as it was the first time.”

Reserve supreme went to Vicky Smith and Jane Davies’ elegant reigning Windsor reserve, seven-year-old Tremarl Timpini (Kate), who earned her place in the final by winning the BSHA large riding horse championship.

Vicky had a strong presence in the championship with two rides. Her other, Miranda Wallace’s former Price Family supreme in-hand contender, seven-year-old piebald mare Ashleas Perfect Spirit, finished second in the small riding horse section.

Vicky said: “Kate won here last year, so it’s always hard coming back to try and do it again — but she has. Harrison Taylor is a good friend of mine and someone I really respect in the horse world, so I gave him the ride on the coloured.”

She also praised the presentation and conditions of the International Arena: “The going in that ring is amazing;they go to so much effort to make sure it’s perfect for riding. I’m not sure there’s anything quite like it.”

There were two coloureds in the championship. Joining Ashleas Perfect Spirit was second-placed large riding horse KBF Lucia ridden by Jayne Ross.

“People are now breeding coloured show horses, so to see two in the championship is really positive,” Vicky said. “Hopefully, it’s a step forward for the future.”

Large hack victor Boston Black Tie (DJ) looked every bit the champion in the International Arena to take the Ellena Thomas British Show Horse Association (BSHA) Supreme Hack championship for the second time on the bounce at the Agria Royal International Horse Show (RIHS).

The eight-year-old by Kilvington Scoundrel and out of Boston Boudicca was ridden as ever by his producer Helen Baker on behalf of owner Nicola Faulconbridge.

“This is our local,” said Helen, who lives just five minutes from the showground, a happy hunting ground for DJ as he has two consecutive Hickstead Derby meeting championships under his belt as well as his two RIHS titles.

“He was competing in the intermediates with my niece, Phoebe, just before the championship so I jokingly said she was working him in for me. She really did though as he felt beautiful in there.

“He’s a diva at home and a proper showman, he is always ‘look at me’ and I have to ground him. I sing a song to him as I’m going round the ring to ground him and to keep me breathing and him breathing. It’s our little thing. People must think I’m so weird as I ride past them.”

DJ is very lightly shown each season, and Helen explained they had deliberately not given him an outing between the Derby meeting and here.

“Every day I look at this horse I just can’t quite believe I own him; he’s just so beautiful. The magic of the relationship he has with Helen is the stuff dreams are made of,” she said.

Nicola watched the championship with bated breath alongside the quality gelding’s breeder Stephen Howard, who point-to-pointed his maternal grandmother. DJ was bought by Nicola directly from Stephen as a three-year-old.

In reserve was Elliee Stunt with the winner of the large division, Cleopatra, owned by Matilda Jackson. Elliee said the nine-year-old began her ridden career in the dressage arena, but arrived with her in February and hit the ground running, qualifying in the intermediates too, with Matilda on board.

“She’s done very little and has done hardly any hack classes so hopefully a lot more to come from her. She the most amazing and cool little horse. She’s happy and chilled and perfect in every way,” said Elliee. “She completely rose to the occasion – flew round and gave me a wicked ride. She’s really cool.”

All eyes were on producer Sarah Walker at the recent North of England Spring Show as she made her triumphant comeback, eight months after she suffered horrific injuries in a rotational fall.

Sarah took the open hunter championship with former Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) winning middleweight Crystal Cove (Fish).

Sarah had a crashing fall last August while practising an extension ahead of the evening performance at the National Hunter Championships.

“I think if we’d only been trotting when the horse tripped, we would have been ok, but because we were practising an extension, it ended up being a rotational fall,” she explained.

Sarah, who runs a highly successful yard alongside her husband Rob Walker, was knocked unconscious in the fall and damaged ligaments in her back and shoulders.

But the worst injuries were to her face: she de-gloved her entire jaw, damaged her mouth and severed the main nerve in her chin. She needed major surgery to repair the damage.

“I was unlucky in one respect, but lucky in another as it could have been so much worse,” Sarah told H&H.

A lengthy recovery ensued.

“We came home on the Wednesday afterwards, and Rob had to help me out of the car and into the house. I was so weak and frail like a little old lady. My whole body just felt in so much pain,” Sarah said.

“Rob and the children were amazing, as was my mum. Mum came to help look after me and spoon-fed me soup for the first week or so. She’d make half a cup at a time as that’s all I could manage. I remember joking to her, ‘I bet you didn’t think you’d be feeding me with a spoon at my age’. I lost two stone in weight – I was just so frail.”

The couple’s daughter, Izzy, who was 11 at the time, had witnessed Sarah’s accident.

“After we got home, she just lay across me and cried,” said Sarah. “She was in a terrible place – wouldn’t eat and couldn’t sleep – so we decided that the best thing was for her to go to the [British Show Pony Society] BSPS champs to ride her ponies and be with her friends to forget about it. This allowed me to rest for a while.”

Their son Sam, an equine dentist, was drafted back in to help his dad with the show horses, and stepped up in fine style, even riding novice lightweight Flashpoint to beat Rob to the supreme champion hunter title at the British Show Horse Association championship.

“I was so proud of the way Rob and the children pulled together,” said Sarah, who continues to struggle with numbness – “I have to drink my tea through a straw so I know if it’s too hot,” – and damaged vocal cords, but insisted: “You just have to get on with it.”

Although Rob, Izzy and Sarah won at North of England, the morning did not start as planned.

“Just as we were ready to set off, we noticed a flat tyre,” Sarah said. “I was beginning to wonder if it was a sign, but thankfully, the day got better.

“I started welling up as I got on and felt really emotional riding up to the ring. A wave of panic came over me when we were asked to extend so I did just that in the class, but in the championship, I thought to myself, ‘I really want to win this,’” explained Sarah, who opted to wear her chinstrap hat.

Sarah had deliberately chosen Fish as the horse to help her stage her comeback.

“I didn’t do much with him as a novice; I’d only ridden him once before riding him in the championship at HOYS when Rob had also won with Sean [View Point]. But I really enjoyed it,” she said.

“I knew when I decided to come back to the ring, he was the only one I was going to ride. I just know him so well; I knew that he would look after me.”

BSPS or BSPA? TSR or SHB? If you’re new to showing, deciding on which society is for you can seem daunting. We’re here to help because knowing which showing society membership you need to ensure that you’re able to compete in the classes you want is important.

Here’s our guide to what some of the biggest showing societies are offering their members this season…

National Pony Society (NPS)

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following HOYS and RIHS qualifiers and respective finals:

• HOYS pony classes (remember both owner and rider need to be a member of a relevant society to compete in HOYS qualifiers)
• NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds M&M WHP RIHS qualifiers – the owner needs to be a member to compete in the qualifying rounds

What do they offer?

There are 18 NPS areas which cover the UK, and most commit to hosting shows throughout the year.

The NPS holds two shows at the Three Counties Showground: the Spring Festival (26 April 2025) hosting a mixture of classes for open and novice ponies, and the Summer Championships (5–7 August 2025) which has an absolute wealth of classes, from fancy dress to HOYS qualifiers as well as finals for all of their championships. There are plenty of classes you can enter on the day at the championships, but if you want to qualify for a final, it’s best to try to crack on early at their area shows. The Great British in-hand show is held in September. You guessed it, the classes are all in hand (14 September at Vale View) but this year is combined with the Autumn Performance Show which hosts the finals of the Anthony Evans Insurance Arena Eventing Challenge.

The NPS runs its own dressage series which is great for anyone used to dressage and wanting to dip a toe in showing, or visa versa. This year’s finals are on 17 May at Bury Farm with finals for all the M&M breeds and riding ponies, at novice and prelim level, plus a team competition and an evening supreme.

The NPS are the custodians of the British Riding Pony Studbook. Members can enjoy reduced passport applications and transfer fees for ponies in the British Riding Pony Studbook.

While we hope you won’t need it, public liability and accident insurance is included in the membership .

What will it cost me?

The cost of a qualifying membership for one person is £89, while a non-qualifying membership costs £69. This membership covers all ponies eligible for the listed qualifying classes. There is a £5 discount for membership applications completed before 31 January.

British Show Pony Society (BSPS)

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following HOYS, RIHS and LIHS qualifiers and respective finals:

• HOYS M&M LR, FR and Open Ridden classes
• HOYS Intermediate Show Horse and Show Hunter
• HOYS SP (LR/FR and height sections)
• HOYS SHP
• HOYS LRHT
• HOYS part-bred class
• HOYS plaited and M&M WHP classes
• All RIHS pony classes including SP, SHP, LR, FR, Heritage M & M LR, M & M FR & Ridden, Anglo and Part Bred Arab, Young Dragonara Riders and Pretty Polly finals
• LIHS M&M Supreme Ridden Championship qualifiers and final
• BSPS London International Performance qualifiers and final
• Burghley Gold Cup qualifiers and final

What do they offer?

There are 17 BSPS areas covering England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, each holding at least one show annually, usually with discounted entry fees to Society members. Various areas also regularly arrange clinics for training and points parties.

There are three BSPS Championship shows held at Arena UK, Grantham: the BSPS Winter Championships (3–5 May 2025), the Summer Championships (19-23 August 2025) and the Heritage Championships (27 and 28 September 2025), which is for native ponies.

BSPS offers members the chance to qualify for the Blue Riband Pony of the Year, BSPS Challenge, Showman’s Award, Best of the Best Championship and Champions of Champions Finals held at the Summer Championships.

The BSPS holds the Land Rover Burghley Gold Cup Sports Pony Finals annually, which is a season must for die-hard working hunter pony competitors.

The performance classes and the Heritage Supreme Ridden Championship (for M&Ms) at the London International Horse Show are also hosted by the BSPS, with qualifying opportunities offered at various shows throughout the year.

What will it cost me?

An adult showing membership costs £60. The BSPS also requires separate pony registrations, which costs £38 per animal.

Northern Counties Pony Association (NCPA) 

What can they offer me?

The NCPA has 10 branches spanning from Cumbria to Shropshire areas, with most holding a number of shows and events during the course of the year where members are offered discounted entry fees.

The NCPA Spring Spectacular will be on 9 March, and Pony of the Year Show will be held on 14 September 2025.

Members are given the opportunity to win a bursary to be used for an equestrian training course at any approved NCPA establishment.

NCPA members can win the Star Rosette at affiliated shows.

What will it cost me?

A single adult membership is £40 per person (£35 online) or family membership is £50 (£45 online) providing children are under 18.

UK Ponies & Horses (UKPH)

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following qualifiers and respective finals:

• RIHS M&M young riders
• RIHS M&M amateur riders
• Multiple HOYS qualifiers

What can they offer?

The UKHP Spring Classic (15–16 March 2025) is held at Onley Grounds Equestrian Centre, Warwickshire. There is also an autumn show held at Newbold Equestrian Centre (21 September 2025) with London International qualifiers.

What will it cost me?

An annual adult membership is £50 per person. Horse and pony registrations cost £40 per animal. A rider membership costs £40 per person.

British Show Horse Association (BSHA)

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following HOYS, RIHS and LIHS qualifiers and respective finals:

• HOYS cobs (including maxi cobs)
• HOYS riding horses
• HOYS ridden hunters
• HOYS hacks
• HOYS ladies show horse
• HOYS intermediate show horse
• RIHS open and amateur hacks, cobs (including maxis) and riding horses
• RIHS working show horse
• LIHS Rising Stars amateur classes

What can they offer?

The BSHA holds several shows throughout the year, including the BSHA Northern Spring Show (13 April), BSHA Southern Spring Show (10 May), the BSHA National Championships Show, (11–13 September) and the BSHA Rising Star Show (14 September).

As well as the amateur classes at the RIHS, the BSHA host a series of amateur-only and home-produced ridden finals at London International Horse Show, with qualifiers being held across the season. New for this year are performance-led classes where conformation won’t be considered.

What will it cost me?

BSHA have a variety of options, depending on which classes you wish to enter. Full adult membership is £65, allowing you to do the full range of HOYS and RIHS classes, but hunter only membership is less, at £45, and LIHS Rising Star membership is £30, including a £5 pre-registration fee. There are further discounts offered such as family, junior and life memberships. Horses need to be registered too, and there are various options for you to choose from.

Sports Horse Breeding of GB (SHB(GB))

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following HOYS and RIHS qualifiers and respective finals:

• RIHS ridden hunter qualifiers.
• HOYS ridden hunter and working hunter qualifiers
• All ridden hunter and sport horse classes that are run under SHB (GB) rules.
• Eligibility to compete for the £200 broodmare premiums which are awarded at shows across the country.

What can they offer?

SHB (GB) is the governing body for hunter and sport horse classes which are held at major shows throughout the country.

Grading system for stallions, mares and foals. There is also an annual stallion parade which takes place at Badminton Horse Trials and showcases stallions graded within the society.

The SHB(GB) Spring Show will take place at Addington Equestrian (27 April 2025). The National Hunter Supreme Championship show will take place at Addington Equestrian (12–13 August 2025). A Burghley Young Event Horse qualifier is also held at the National Hunter Supreme Championship Show.

At both shows there are classes that are open to non-members of the society.

What will it cost me?

A membership costs £95 per person per year. But, if you’re new to showing and want to dip a toe in these classes, you can purchase a day ticket for £42. A maximum of two day tickets may be purchased per year, and this entitles competitors to compete at a maximum of two shows in the year, covering owner and rider membership, together with horse registration/overstamp for those shows. But stand warned: if the class is a qualifying class for RIHS, in order for the qualification to be valid, application for full owner/rider membership and horse registration/overstamp must be received in the SHB(GB) office within 14 days.

The Showing Register (TSR)

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following HOYS qualifiers and respective finals:

• HOYS M&M qualifying classes
• HOYS coloured horse and pony classes
• HOYS plaited pony classes (SP, SHP, LR/FR, INT, PB, WHP)
• HOYS hunter weights, small hunters, working hunter and side-saddle

What can they offer?

TSR run three shows: the Spring Show (26 May 2025) the Premier Amateur Show (6–7 September 2025) and the Eligibility to qualify for the New Amateur of the Year Show, the HOYS Amateur Points League, and Talent Spotting finals in September 2025. Members also get discounted entries at TSR shows and clinics. Added perks include a complimentary Horse of the Year Show evening performance ticket for Sunday 2025, 10% discount on Equibalancer products and 15% discount on Supreme Products items.

What will it cost me?

Entry level membership at £30 for you and £10 for your pony or horse entitles you to compete at all TSR Shows, Talent Spotting finals, qualify for Amateur of the Year and all other non-HOYS benefits. If you want to compete in HOYS classes or enter the Premier Amateur points league, you’ll need full membership at £50 plus £20 for your horse or pony. A package rate of £65 covers one adult, one child and one pony.

British Skewbald and Piebald Association (BSPA)

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following RIHS qualifiers and respective finals:

• RIHS coloured horse and pony classes

What can they offer?

The BSPA has 13 regional areas, which offer support and assistance to members.

Grading system for stallions and mares registered in the society.

The BSPA hosts the Festival of Showing winter championships (TBC) and the BSPA World of Colour Show (TBC) at the same venue.

What will it cost me?

An adult membership costs £60 per person, while a RIHS qualifying card costs £30 per horse/pony.

Coloured Horse and Pony Society (CHAPS)

Why join?

If you want to compete in the following qualifiers and respective finals:qualifiers and respective finals:

• HOYS coloured horse and pony series
• CHAPS area and championship shows

What can they offer?

CHAPS UK run several shows and events through the year. The CHAPS summer championship show takes place at Arena UK (14–16 August 2025), and you’ll find sections for everyone, from HOYS qualifiers to in hand and ridden classes for amateur, home produced, novice, open, junior and golden oldies.

CHAPS UK offers grading opportunities for registered stallions and mares.

What will it cost me?

An adult showing membership costs £48 per person.

Veteran Horse Society (VHS)

Why join?

If you want to compete a horse or pony, 15-years-old or over, in showing or dressage.

What can they offer?

The VHS championship show takes place at Arena UK (29 August–31 September 2025).

What will it cost me?

A VHS showing membership costs £35 per person. Showing and dressage cards cost between £12.50 and £17.50.

Senior Showing and Dressage Ltd (SSADL)

Why join?

If you are a home-produced competitor with a senior horse or pony (aged over 15) and want to show at either RIHS or LIHS.

What can they offer?

Two prestigious finals held at the RIHS and at London International, for both in-hand and ridden show horses and ponies. A national championship show (20–21 September) which is open to all home produced ponies and horses 15 years of age and over. You don’t have to be a member to compete at the championships, but you will need to be a member in advance if you hope to qualify for the RIHS or LIHS finals and the Senior of the Year final. There is also a dressage series and other benefits.

What will it cost me?

For newcomers, showing membership costs £75, but renewal before the end of February is discounted to £70. There are also non-showing options which are cheaper.

Changes aimed at standardising rules on who is and is not an amateur in showing have been agreed for classes at next year’s Royal International Horse Show (RIHS, 22-27 July).

On 17 December the Showing Council facilitated a meeting between the British Piebald & Skewbald Association, the British Show Horse Association, the British Show Pony Society, Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain, and UK Ponies & Horses, which all hold qualifying and classes and finals at the RIHS.

A Showing Council spokesperson said this was the fourth time the groups have met, with the “sole aim of standardising the amateur rule” across the five societies.

The changes are: professional producers will no longer be able to compete a novice horse on behalf of an amateur rider, without the rider losing their “amateur status”; racing and riding schools have been removed from the list of restrictions, which “should allow more people to compete in amateur classes; and breeding has been removed from the list of restrictions, with the exception of owning/standing a stallion at stud, which will not be permitted for amateurs.

It was also agreed to change the wording from “on the day when an exhibit is competing in amateur classes” to “on the showground where an exhibit is competing”.

“It is hoped by relaxing the amateur rules, with the removal of various restrictions, these classes will be opened up to a wider audience and therefore be of benefit to the societies, the shows and the wider showing community,” said the Showing Council spokesperson.

Amateur rules have come under the spotlight in recent years; some championship titles have changed hands after winners were found not to be classed as amateurs under a particular society’s rules – even if they are, with other societies.

The 2023 London International Horse Show showing results from the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) Rising Star finals can be found below. Will you be looking to enter your horse in the competition next season?

For the first time in history, amateur show horse riders got the chance to compete under the spotlights at London International Horse Show in the schedule of BSHA-hosted classes. The BSHA Rising Star finals for hunters, hacks, cobs, riding horses and show horses welcomed strong entries across the board, but only one combination could reign in each of the performance-led classes.

Eleanor Liddle rides Val Doidge’s Cu Chulainn Carrabawn Rebel to the top spot in the middleweight and heavyweight hunter class. This is the pair’s first season showing at affiliated level and they add this result to a second at Royal Windsor and a championship at Liskeard.

Small and lightweight hunter type

Hertfordshire-based Sarah Moreland’s Coultard Z leads the lightweight final en route to the overall hunter title. The bay gelding was a SFAS winner in 2022, and he’s since won many amateur titles, including at the BSHA supreme hunter championships. The pair also triumphed in the ladies’ show horse championship on the final day of London International.

Lightweight cob

Knockboy and Zoe Hyslop are promoted into the top spot in the lightweight final as the combination who were initially placed first were disqualified. Zoe and the gelding qualified for the final at Puddledub Shows.

Heavyweight cob

Frazer Foxes Covert, ridden by Carly Chapman, heads the heavyweight cob line-up for owner Kim Hayward. The pair have featured at the RIHS in previous years.

Maxi cob

Alex George rides Kerren Bissmire’s maxi cob Paulines Boy into poll position in their class, before finishing as reserve section champions.

Small riding horse

Young rider Finn Williamson and Port Lou Lou make the most of their lap of honour after taking the small riding horse title.

The racehorse to show horse tri-colour goes to Musical Legend, ridden by Zoe Gould. The versatile gelding also competes in dressage and in September he aided Zoe on her way to being crowned overall individual champion in the senior open dressage final at the Riding Club national championships.

Top of the hack field is Helen Church’s home-bred Dark De Niro son Bassingfield Dark Secret ridden by her daughter Jennifer Harper, who are the reigning Horse of the Year Show SEIB Search For A Star supreme champions.

Top of the working hunter field, and section reserve, is Carolyn Banner riding her own Gortfree Star.

Showing societies have taken action against a member of the community as a result of his “offensive” social media posts.

The British Show Horse Association (BSHA), Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain (SHB(GB)), the British Show Pony Society (BSPS) and The Showing Register (TSR) have all released statements or changed policy in relation to John Bland.

The former showing competitor has been active on social media, creating what has been described in a joint statement by the BSHA and SHB(GB) as “continuing offensive, abusive and misogynistic posts”.

The organisations held extraordinary meetings to discuss “recent bullying and harassment on social media and in particular (though not exclusively) Mr Bland’s content”.

“Both organisations considered the content of the posts to be vitriolic, generally unsubstantiated, ill-founded and in some cases, obscenely presented,” the statement said.

“As one of our judges we expect you to uphold the highest standards of decency and integrity.

“We simply have to do something to protect the integrity and mental wellbeing of our members, our judges, and our discipline of showing. We must maintain and be seen to uphold the high standards that our societies have been built upon. We cannot have social media and anti-bullying policies that quote a zero tolerance and then take no action to eliminate such behaviour.”

The statement adds that anyone who is a “friend” of Mr Bland, or with anyone else who spreads “malicious information or acts in a manner that does not meet our standards of common human decency” on social media to “please remove yourself from our judging panel”. It states that being friends with him will be seen as “tacitly supporting” what he says, and that the organisations would not tell people who to be friends with but that supporting such behaviour is outside their codes of conduct.

BSPS chair Paul Cook sent an email to judges about Mr Bland’s “offensive, abusive and misogynistic” social media content, about which he said members and judges had contacted him. It said the BSPS board’s view is that any judge who is “friends” with Mr Bland is “by default supporting, even if tacitly, his appalling behaviour”, so anyone who wants to stay on the BSPS judging panel must not be a friend of his online.

Mr Cook told H&H: “It is not compatible for any official of the BSPS to be a ‘friend’ of anyone on social media who abuses, threatens, harasses and insults others. Mr John Bland’s misogynistic, anti-Semitic and vile behaviour have no place in society today. Therefore, those who wish to remain a ‘friend’ of him or others with similar views have no place officiating for the BSPS.”

A TSR spokesman told H&H: “TSR wishes to stand alongside other showing societies to have a united front in relation to this level of unacceptable online abuse.

“We have written to all judges on the TSR O and H [open and HOYS] panel to ask them to consider any involvement in relation to online abuse coming from individuals who include John Bland, and any other pages that condone anyone who has actively targeted individuals in a public forum.”

Mr Bland told H&H he stands by everything he has posted; he said he does not consider himself a misogynist or anti-Semitic, adding: “I like Jewish people and have lots of Jewish friends.”

He described the action in relation to judges as “blackmail”, and said his lawyers believe he would have a case for that reason.

“I loved showing, I adored it,” he said, adding that he started as a professional aged 20 and had much success, “so I know about showing”.

“I’m telling the truth in everything I say,” he said. “The truth I know, and they don’t like it. If you upset the people in charge of showing, they’ll stop you doing it, so people stay quiet and put up with whatever. I don’t have to stay quiet because I’m not a member. Most people walk away but I didn’t.”

Mr Bland said he started posting vlogs online to “tell people the truth”, and that he “disagrees with everything they’re saying”.

“They’re putting blame on someone rather than taking responsibility for ruining showing,” he said, adding that concerns about horse welfare are a major factor behind his posts, and that although complaints were made to police about his online content, officers visited him and said they only had to reprimand him for referring to someone as “fat”.

“I don’t know what they’re trying to achieve,” he added. “I haven’t made anything up, I’ve said truthful things they don’t like. I’ve got 25,000 followers and they all agree with me in everything I say.”

The showing world has mourned the death of leading show producer, rider and esteemed judge Stella Harries, who passed away aged 85.

Stella Harries rode and produced show animals alongside her late sister, Christine Harries. She began her career riding show ponies and her most successful rides of the 1940s included multi-garlanded Kavora Mr Chips and Kavora Dubarry, who was reserve riding pony champion at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS).

As a producer, she was responsible for several Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and RIHS show pony champions, including Pollyanna, a 138cm mare out of the famous show pony Pretty Polly, who was champion at HOYS in 1963 with Aly Pattinson before she was exported to America. Arden Tittle Tattle, also a 138cm contender, took the HOYS championship two years on the bounce in 1959 and 1960 with Mary Rose Peddie in the saddle, while 138cm Shandon stood HOYS champion in both 1965 and 1969.

Miss Harries and Christine produced animals from their base, Little Barn, which was located in Berkshire.

Miss Harries, who was a pupil of Count Robert Orrsich was also known for her production of hacks, including the legendary Brown Buzzard, HOYS hack of the year in 1982 under Catherine Cooper, and Nobility, HOYS hack of the year in 1994 with Lisa Friswell. Ridgewood Venture lifted the hack championship at the RIHS in both 1971 and 1974.

In later years, Miss Harries was a leading judge who officiated at all the major shows. She was also the president of the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) from 2009 to 2011.

In their tribute to Miss Harries, the BSHA referred to her as “the most elegant of all ladies ever to ride a hack in the show ring” and as a “true ‘doyen’ of the showing world.”

Anne Hood joined Miss Harries’ yard in 1972.

“I’d trained with Jennie Loriston-Clarke and then went to work for Stella as head girl,” said Anne, who was based with Stella for three seasons. “She was an absolutely fantastic mentor, but she was also great fun. She was a marvellous showman, but she always had a twinkle in her eye and was up for a laugh.”

“She was so knowledgeable and she was always happy to teach you. She had time for everyone and if anyone would approach her for help, she would be willing to provide it. She will be greatly missed.”

The London Horse Show showing qualifiers 2023 have been announced, with almost 500 qualifying opportunities across 45 agricultural and county shows.

H&H reported that London International Horse Show (LIHS) organisers HPower worked with the British Show Pony Society (BSPS), the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) and the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations (ASAO) to create the series, which will feature 20 classes.

Last month HPower said that a “significant” number of show organisers had requested to run LIHS classes, and the full list has now been confirmed, with 494 qualifiers taking place across 45 agricultural and county shows in England, Scotland and Wales.

“We are delighted that so many shows have come forward to apply to be a part of this new series and are particularly pleased with the wide geographical spread of the participating shows. This demonstrates that there is a strong demand from show organisers and therefore the public to see equestrian showing classes in their local events,” said Paul Hooper of ASAO.

BSPS chair Paul Cook added that one of the reasons for launching the series was to bring showing to a wider audience, and increase the number of agricultural and county shows that hold equestrian classes, which have been “sadly diminishing” in the past few years.

“These shows between them have an audience of over half a million which definitely helps us to achieve our aim of finding a route to present equestrian showing to new audiences,” he said.

Westmorland County Show, which is 224 years old this year, is one of the events running qualifiers.

“We are delighted to be holding qualifiers for all the 20 classes on offer. The traditional agricultural shows are where equestrian showing originally started. We know our audience will participate in and enjoy this new range of classes,” said Westmorland County Show chief executive Christine Knipe.

“We are very grateful to LIHS as without the support of such important international horse shows, equestrian showing at a local level could not be sustained.”

The HPower spokesman added that the BSPS and BSHA will help those who qualify for London to prepare for the finals by giving them advice and guidance “every step of the way”.

“We know it can be daunting for a competitor to come to a large show like London and compete in the final but we are determined to make the whole experience enjoyable for them, we will look after them and give them a fantastic day out,” said BSPS secretary Karen Ward.

A new series aiming to bring showing to a wider audience has received a “fantastic” response from show organisers – with a significant number requesting to hold qualifiers.

As reported by H&H in November, London International Horse Show (LIHS) organisers have worked with the British Show Pony Society (BSPS), the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) and the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations (ASAO) to create the series, which will comprise classes for “everything from hacks and cobs, to cradle stakes and coloured ponies”.

Qualifiers will take place at county and agricultural shows, with a full list of hosts to be released mid-February. The 20 finals will take place at LIHS in December.

An HPower spokesman said that show organisers have responded “extremely positivity”, with a “significant number” requesting to run classes.

“Its emphasis is to be inclusive, with a focus on the amateur home-produced competitor, encouraging them to compete at their local agricultural and county show. Entrants for the classes will not have to be an association/society member to compete in the qualifying classes but will have to join the relevant association/society if they reach the final,” said the spokesman.

“It is expected that this open invitation will encourage many more competitors to ‘have a go’ at their local show. All the BSHA classes are aimed at amateurs, and the BSPS classes are performance classes and not restricted to amateurs. These classes offer an ideal opportunity for ponies and horses competing in other disciplines to gain experience from the excellent educational competitive platform that showing provides.”

BSHA chair Nigel Hollings described the series as an “exciting development for the showing world”.

“I am so pleased that we’ve had such a fantastic response from show organisers,” he said.

“It will be a great experience for finalists to compete at LIHS in December – showing started in the capital with the London International Horse Show at Olympia, holding many classes when it started in 1907, so the circle is now complete with showing coming home.”

BSPS chair Paul Cook added that the new format will make classes more interesting for people to watch.

“Commentators will be encouraged to be much more informative for the watching public, describing what is required of the competitor and what the public should be looking out for,” he said.

Paul Hooper, ASAO secretary and president of the Mid Somerset Show, said showing is an “intrinsic part” of ASAO member shows.

“We look forward to working with LIHS this year to expand this fantastic new series across the UK. We hope all competitors enjoy competing at our member shows throughout the summer and wish them all the very best of luck at reaching the finals of all the equine competitions on offer,” he said.

A rule that prevents certain Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and London International Horse Show (LIHS) showing qualifiers being held at the same competition has caused concern for some show organisers.

The HOYS terms state that any show holding British Show Pony Society (BSPS) and British Show Horse Association (BSHA) show series qualifiers for LIHS 2023 will not be permitted to run any HOYS qualifiers at the same show. HOYS said that this “should not impact the individual shows”.

Concerns were raised about the rule and one organiser told H&H it is forcing shows to choose between HOYS and LIHS on which qualifiers they hold.

“Shows are struggling enough to make money in the current situation, and with the cost of living and fuel prices, competitors are struggling to compete,” he said. “It appears that the shows are caught in the middle of a dispute between HOYS and some governing bodies. The people paying the price for that are the shows and the competitors.

“No one wants to stick their head above the parapet, because no one wants to lose their qualifiers, but there’s a lot of unrest. The only solution I can see is for shows that are affected to ask HOYS for a dispensation. But as it stands, we’ll have to choose between hosting HOYS or LIHS qualifiers.”

Nick Brooks-Ward, development director of LIHS organiser HPower, said the rule means “many organisations are faced with a choice”.

“We have developed these new classes to open up another route into showing that is educational and informative. At all stages in the development of these classes, we have endeavoured to offer something new for competitors and for ASAO [Association of Show and Agricultural Organisation] member shows,” he said.

A spokesman for HOYS organiser Grandstand Media told H&H that following the announcement of the new LIHS showing series, HOYS is waiting to see the full rule-base the series will run.

“As a result of this, HOYS has allocated this year’s qualifiers with an addition to the wording for qualifier shows to safeguard the distinction of the HOYS classes, in a similar manner to how this has previously been phrased for Royal International Horse Show and LIHS qualifiers. This was done with no knowledge of where and when the qualifiers for this new series will be held in 2023,” he said.

“From conversations with the relevant parties, we understand that the intention is for the LIHS showing series to be allocated to local agricultural shows, and therefore not those with existing HOYS qualifiers. It is for this reason that the extension of the HOYS wording should not impact the individual shows.”

The spokesman added that Grandstand has been contacted by three shows that have been allocated a non-ridden HOYS qualifier, and on this basis HOYS has “agreed” to review.

“It is evident that the showing industry is working hard to provide new opportunities for amateurs, and as organisers we remain committed to supporting competitors across the board,” she said. “We continue to welcome feedback as we work with the shows and societies for the benefit of showing and for the future of HOYS.”

BSPS chair Paul Cook told H&H the BSPS was approached by the ASOA and asked whether it could support a series of qualifiers for the LIHS.

“There have been a significant number of county and agricultural shows that have had challenges around attracting enough entries, if they don’t have qualifying opportunities – and particularly HOYS qualifiers – so we agreed to the series. We already work particularly closely with LIHS with our M&M [mountain and moorland] final,” he said.

“The idea was that the new qualifiers go to county and agricultural shows that don’t have a full range of HOYS qualifiers. Where the anomaly has come is there are some shows that just have one HOYS qualifier, and therefore they have read the HOYS rule as it prohibits them from having any LIHS qualifiers. Where there are these anomalies, I think HOYS will work with the show to iron that out.”

BSHA general manager Lucy Savill, and chair Nigel Hollings, told H&H the organisation is “committed” to supporting county shows that have experienced diminished entries in recent years.

“The aim of the rising star series is to welcome newcomers into showing, support our existing members and provide an attainable route to not only a new and exciting final hosted by LIHS, but to all levels of affiliated showing, a concept shared with Grandstand Media as part of our planning process,” they said.

“We have been inundated with calls and emails from shows wishing to take part and hope that we can all work together to keep showing fun and educational.”

The organisers of The London International Horse Show have announced a series of new showing classes at London International which are set to run in 2023.

The news was announced at the annual conference of the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations (ASAO) (4-6 November).

The organisers have worked with the British Show Pony Society (BSPS), the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) and ASAO to create a joint series that consists of 23 different classes held at ASAO member shows including BSHA Rising Star classes for hunters, hacks, cobs, riding horses and show horses, and BSPS classes for performance ponies including coloured ponies, mountain and moorland (M&M) lead rein, working sports ponies, and cradle and nursery stakes working hunter pony classes.

The aim of the new series is to be inclusive with a focus on the amateur competitor, encouraging them to compete at their local agricultural and county shows. Entrants do not have to be association or society members to compete in the qualifying classes but would have to join the relevant association or society if they reach the final.

Simon Brooks-Ward, event director for London International Horse Show said: “It has been a long-held ambition to add more showing to London International Horse Show and we are very excited to be launching this series. The space that the ExCeL London venue offers means we are able to put a new arena alongside our existing arena, which allows us to accommodate this series. We are delighted to be working with the ASAO, BSHA and BSPS, as many will know, the BSPS already successfully hold the ridden M&M championships at the London show.”

It is expected that this open invitation will encourage many more competitors to “have a go” at their local shows.

The BSHA Rising Stars classes are performance-led with all participants completing a timed freestyle show on the day. The classes are open to amateur BSHA members and non-members.

The BSPS classes are not restricted to amateurs but the majority of the classes are performance classes. For example, the lead-rein class will have obstacles and small jumps.

As well as making the classes more inclusive, the ambition is to make them more interesting and informative for the public. Commentators will be encouraged to explain the classes to spectators, describing what is required of the competitors and what the public should be looking out for. The intention is to engender a higher level of interest in showing.

Agricultural and county show organisers have until early January 2023 to apply to run classes. Classes will be held throughout the week of the London International.

Paul Cook of BSPS said: “We are convinced that there is going to be a great appetite for these classes. We are determined to introduce a new style of showing which is much more inclusive for the competitor and educational and entertaining for the audience. Having the M&M championships already at London means that we know that this venue will work brilliantly for this new series, and it will give a great day out for the competitors and their families who reach the final.”

When Robyn Butler was just moments from stepping into the amateur supreme championship at Wiltshire autumn show (24 September) she was panicked and horrified in equal measures when the stirrup on her vintage side saddle suddenly snapped beneath her.

However, thanks to a generous showing producer, who is no stranger to success sitting aside herself, Robyn was able to contend the supreme final with her Irish Draught Carrabawn Francis (Chunky).

Robyn, who works as the hospitality coordinator for Wincanton and Exeter racecourse, had placed third in the Royal International (RIHS) ladies’ hunter class that morning, being the highest placed amateur combination. Consequently, they booked themselves into the amateur supreme held in the evening performance.

“This was only our fifth side saddle class and I’m still a newbie to riding sideways,” said Robyn, who has been partnered with 14-year-old Chunky for four years.

“Just minutes before we were due to go into the supreme, I shuffled in my saddle and as I put all my weight into my left stirrup, it snapped; the stitching had completely gone. I panicked and thought that was it for Chunky and I.”

Earlier in the day, Robyn had watched show horse producer Lynn Russell ride in one of the side saddle classes at the show. Thankfully, Lynn had not yet left the show ground at the time of the amateur supreme.

“Side saddles have different fastenings for the stirrup, so finding another was always going to be a gamble,” continued Robyn. “I noticed Lynn’s lorry had not yet left the venue, so we rushed to find her. We managed to catch her and she lent us a stirrup so we could still compete in the class. Thankfully it had the same fitting despite it being far too long.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t the fairy tale ending of winning but Chunky performed a beautiful show considering the challenge of a too long stirrup being used by a not very experienced side saddle rider.

“I owe a huge thank you to Lynn for helping an amateur like me have fun in an evening performance. As an amateur, I always look up to the pros and I aspire to be like them, so for one of the best in the business to help me out like that was really touching.”

Janay Atherden and the Leeman family have paid tribute to their coloured show cob Randalstown Top Notch (Notty), who was recently put down aged 13.

The gelding was bought by the Leemans at the end of 2019. He gave Janay a dream run of results as both a heavyweight and open coloured contender. His last appearance in the ring was at the 2021 Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) where he stood third in the heavyweight cob of the year final.

When owned by Sue and Grahame Phillips, Notty was piloted on several occasions by physiotherapist Emily Proud. The pair won the overall cob supreme at Hickstead in 2018 and the following year they scored the amateur cob championship at the Royal Windsor and were also victorious in amateur ranks at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS).

In 2019, Notty also won the LeMieux La Liga award for the most consistent heavyweight show cob in HOYS qualifiers.

Janay and her husband Frazer Atherden had judged Notty in the ring and asked his then owner Sue if he was for sale. Although he was not available at the time, Sue promised they would have first refusal when the time came.

Notty’s consistency continued with Janay in the saddle, with the pair achieving wins at the Royal Windsor and the the Great Yorkshire, among others. They were also overall cob champions at both the Hickstead Derby meeting and the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) national championships.

“Notty arrived with us just before lockdown,” said Janay. “My best memory with him was winning Windsor. It had always been a dream of mine to ride in the Castle Arena and he did that for me.

“To ride, he was phenomenal — it was like sitting on air. He was the most genuine soul, but he had a cheeky side. I could always rely on him as he’d never let me down.”

During lockdown 2020 Notty was diagnosed with cancer after a small lump was found on his neck. He was pronounced cancer-free in 2021, but after HOYS later in the year he fell ill and was put down in February 2022 after all treatment options had been exhausted.

In a recent interview with H&H, Janay’s mother, Lisha Leeman, said: “Five days after HOYS, he fell drastically ill. We tried every drug you can think of, every biopsy, every scan, everything you can possibly think of. There was nothing they could have done. Janay absolutely adored Notty and he adored her, too.”

The British Show Horse Association (BSHA) has introduced its own accredited trainers scheme with the aim of supporting those stepping into the world of competitive showing.

The society will have a dedicated page on its website with profiles for all trainers, and links on how to contact them to book training clinics. The initial selection was chosen geographically to ensure trainers are available throughout the country.

A BSHA spokesman said: “We aim to provide the grassroots, newcomer and amateur competitors with a support network to help them on their journey, with regular clinics to give competitors easy access to relevant training.”

Also launching in 2022 is the new Rising Stars series. Open to both members and non-members who have never ridden at the Royal International (RIHS) or Horse of the Year Show (excluding Search For A Star or RIHS amateur classes), the series offers a selection of grassroots classes to those looking to start or develop their showing careers.

“All our accredited trainers will be involved in the BSHA Rising Stars series awards. They will award deserving partnerships attending the clinics qualification rosettes enabling them to attend the BSHA National Championship Show held on 10 September at Arena UK,” the spokesman said.

“Further training will be available with our accredited trainers at two preparation clinics in the summer to enable all those that qualify the chance to shine in the ring and learn to turn out themselves and their horses to a top-class level.”

The Rising Stars series will be available at local riding club level and BSHA affiliated shows, too. The two highest placed combinations who have not already qualified will win qualification rosettes and a pass to the finals. Judges will not ride the exhibits in qualifiers but there will be a ride judge at the final.

BSHA accredited trainers will also be awarding qualification rosettes to attendees at their clinics, offering another avenue into the series.

A BSHA open racehorse to show horse class has also been added to the schedule.

“The BSHA is pleased to offer a new class for anyone wishing to compete their thoroughbred after retiring from training. The association recognises the importance of supporting those animals leaving the racing industry, and we hope our members take the opportunity to participate in the class with their registered hack, riding horse or hunter,” the spokesman said.

The final will take place at the National Championship Show and the highest unqualified horse from each qualifier will be able to enter the final. This class will run as an open ridden class, so all exhibits will be ridden by the judge.

The British Show Horse Association (BSHA) held its annual national championships at Arena UK, Lincolnshire, from the 10 —11 September.

The Okeeffe’s small riding horse takes a host of titles during the week, including the riding horse and HOYS championship with Justine Armstrong-Small (pictured) and the large intermediate show riding type class with Sophie Okeeffe. 

13. Aberllanerch Lord Lucan

The lightweight cob and Allan Birch are top of the working show cob line-up for owner Deborah Oakes.

14. OSO Pol Rodger

Ian Boylan secures the Price Family in-hand supreme ticket with Gemma Thompson’s future riding horse, who will be making is HOYS debut in October. 

15. Whalton Razzle Dazzle

Katey Saggers gets a fine tune out of her home-produced mare all week, picking up several placings and a HOYS ticket in the process.

The new policy sets out clear individual responsibility for positive tests, as well as a defined threshold for bromide. H&H speaks to those involved in setting up the new rules...

THE British Show Horse Association (BSHA) is “determined to clean up showing” with its new anti-doping policy, which launches tomorrow (1 October), in response to members’ requests.

H&H reported last year that the BSHA was disappointed with the low penalty imposed by an independent tribunal when a horse tested positive for bromide.

Association general manager Lucy Savill told H&H members raised the issue at the AGM.

“They were unhappy with the outcome of the disciplinary,” she said. “The [three-month] ban was served out of season, and many felt there was no deterrent.

“They asked us to spend some money and come up with a policy, so those who fall foul of our rules are suitably punished.”

A BSHA spokesman said a number of members had raised concerns over the anti-doping rules, feeling they were out of date. The code has four principles: to protect the integrity of classes, horse welfare, safety of competitors and safety of judges.

The BSHA worked with Rory Mac Neice, a former jockey who is now head of commercial litigation at Ashfords law firm, on the policy.

He told H&H he believes the policy achieves the four aims.

“The biggest change is in responsibility; there is now strict liability when a horse tests positive for a banned substance,” he said. “The code places responsibility on each individual member, which brings it in line with other disciplines, and differs in some respects to some other approaches taken in showing.”

Mr Mac Neice said the former rules were “opaque” and members had wanted clear responsibility. This will be on the member who has care of the horse, so the producer or rider.

“The BSHA hopes members will benefit from confidence that they’re competing on a level playing field,” he said.

The association will adopt the FEI’s prohibited substances list but has, on members’ request, set its own bromide threshold, having sought professional advice.

The code “reflects fairness” if a member can prove he or she is not at fault for a positive test, and “firmness where a member cannot do so”. In almost all cases, sanctions will involve suspension, two-thirds of which must be during the active season.

BSHA chairman Nigel Hollings told H&H the work was started by former chair Ian Darcy.

“I’m delighted this is now complete and ready for the 2021 season,” he said. “Our members asked us to work on it, and it’s taken a lot of hard work, but we’re determined to clean up showing and look forward to having our policy for the benefit of all.”

A ladies’ combination finishes supreme, a novice riding horse cements her future and a home-produced hack impresses at British Show Horse Association (BSHA) Autumn Gala, Arena UK, Lincolnshire on 12–13 September

DANIELLE HEATH crowned a sparkling weekend for her team at the British Show Horse Association Autumn Gala when landing the final overall open supreme.

Guy Mears’ ladies’ show horse champion, the ultra-mannerly and ever-cheerful maxi cob Brookdale Limited Edition (Archie), gave a magical show which earned the only two perfect scores of the day.

Devils’ Horsemen director Camilla Naprous judged alongside David Puttock and former world cutting horse champion Constance Jaeggi.

“I gave this combination my only 10 of the day,” said Camilla. “The horse was exceptional as soon as he entered the ring – a real showman. He pricked his ears, got on with the job and had a smile on his face. He looked the type of horse you would love to ride all day long.”

This was not only Archie’s first outing of the year, but a debut in “sideways” supreme ranks for Danielle.

“I decided to stay in the side-saddle because he just rocks it,” she said. “He’s a mega Rolls-Royce ride sideways as well as astride.”

Earlier, Archie had collected the maxi cob title partnered by Issy Mears, 19, and the team’s tally was further boosted by Anne Leigh’s six-year-old cob, Bobbi Dazzler, who headed the novice class and made a triumphant open debut to stand champion.

Guy Mears’ riding horse Times Square, also six and novice champion at Royal Windsor last term, put a further notch in his belt when standing open reserve to Jayne Ross with the prolific Casino, after taking reserve in the young riders’ section with Issy.

Tight for reserve

AFTER a second inspection by the judges, the reserve open supreme went to Dot Clowes with Edwina Al Humaidhi’s part-Connemara working show horse champion Templebready Alainn (Molly), who gave a giant-killing show, delivering precisely what this lovely dun mare said on her tin.

She had tied on marks with Casino – ultimately second reserve – and Jo Bates with Suzannah Welby’s hack Elusive.

Leicestershire-based Dot returned to the show ring last term after a 50-year absence.

“We are primarily a hunting family, but when Edwina’s daughter Laila – who previously showed Molly – went to university, they offered Molly to me on extended loan,” said Dot, 60. “She is nicest, kindest mare in all ways and I’m so lucky to have this opportunity to come into showing later in life. Today we felt very honoured to be in a championship among such elite company.”

The whole show was a successful, joyous and well-supported occasion – and a triumph of organisation by new BSHA general manager Lucy Savill.

“The standards of production and animals were remarkable, too,” added Camilla, who also officiated in the amateur and home-produced supremes.

The overall home-produced supreme fell to Lucinda Haines and her immaculate large hack, Fridebi Supreme Way (Dolly), who delivered a foot-perfect, flair-filled show.

“I was looking for a horse I would like to put on a plane and take back to Texas, and a rider who took risks to put on an exciting show,” said Constance Jaeggi.

Helped by her mother Linda, Lucinda juggles producing their six horses with a full-time job in publishing — albeit currently working from home. The Dolphin Supreme seven-year-old joined the family at the end of last year.

“I got a chance phone call asking if I would like another hack,” added Lucinda, who also won with her small campaigner, Thurstonhouse Miss Moneypenny. “With my soft spot for hacks I obviously said yes.”

The amateur supreme was another nail-biting affair, as three partnerships finished on equal top marks. After the judges took another look, the top spot went to Jemma Ellison with her Team Moore-produced small hunter Master Of The Hounds (Paddy), a workmanlike grey who went about his job with style and enthusiasm.

“It was very mannerly, covered the ground at all paces, had a good gallop and looked a pleasure to ride,” said co-judge David Puttock.

Liverpool-based construction lawyer Jemma has had Paddy – a seven-year-old full Irish Draught – for two years.

“He is the perfect amateur horse – really well-behaved, a comfortable ride and takes very little working-in,” said Jemma. “He loves jumping, too, so we will do some of that over the winter as well as hunt with the Cheshire.”

Steller run for young rider

ALICE HOMER was on top form. Her four-year-old Ballinclare headed the novice hacks, and Angie Coggins’ Bloomfield Eloquence gave her a first major hunter double. Having won the open weights, this upstanding six-year-old also made a winning side-saddle debut in an exceptionally strong ladies’ hunter class and stood ladies’ reserve.

Alice, 18, then completed her tally by taking her first senior worker title with a new ride, the restricted victor Little Joe. The 17.2hh seven-year-old newcomer had previously evented, and was sent to the Homer yard to be sold.

“I fell in love with him, though, and persuaded Grandy [David Tatlow] to buy him for me as my first horse worker,” said Alice. “He team-chased and went cubbing as his preparation for this – he’s a superstar in all ways.”

Novices were out in force on day one, and the overall top spot sealed a triumphant show for Team Walker’s newcomers when Robert emerged a convincing winner with Miranda Wallace’s young riding horse, Springpond Diamond Legacy (Ziva), who had also dazzled on her ridden debut at the UK Nationals.

“I gave this horse my highest mark,” said co-judge Tim Wiggett, the outgoing society president. “It owned the ring from the moment it walked in, and just oozed star quality. The show was foot-perfect and magnificently ridden.”

This brought the yard’s novice tally to six wins, four championships, one reserve and one supreme.

“I was especially pleased because all my owners had a winner, which was great for them after they were amazingly loyal through lockdown,” said Robert. “As it was only Ziva’s second show I just thought I’d see how she left the line, but from the word go she rose to the occasion and answered every question I asked of her.”

However, Robert was pipped to the coveted novice hunter title by Oli Hood with Julia Moorhouse’s Emperor Augustus six-year-old Timpany Imperial (Tim), who came from Sally and Peter Hobbs three years ago but has only been lightly shown under saddle.

“He only went to three shows last year and the UK Nationals this time,” said Julia, an MRI radiographer for the NHS.

“He hasn’t been out of the top two but needed time to mature. I’ve been working non-stop through the pandemic, so it was lovely to see what a great job Team Hood has done.”

Amateur home-producers provided absorbing competition, and Heather McCloy’s trip from Yorkshire with the maxi cob Colour Print – her sole outing this term – was rewarded with a good section win.

Fellow Yorkshirewoman Hayley Erner was another on form, taking the amateur novice heavyweights and standing reserve on her exciting new cob Captain Pugwash, who then came out to be reserve in the open home-produced cob section.

“This was only his second-ever show,” said business management adviser Hayley. “I spotted him on Facebook earlier this year and although he was very raw, there was just something about him I loved – I wanted a cob just to have fun on. He’d originally come over from Ireland and was totally feral.”

Cornwall-based livestock transport manager Lisa Davey had double cause for celebration. After her new cob, the five-year-old Red Butler, landed the novice cob title with Sarah Walker to continue his unbeaten three-show run, her home-produced hunter Redemption Ground (Cheerio) again pulled out all the stops to win his heavyweight section, partnered by Lisa’s great friend, stage four cancer survivor Christa Davis.

“We love having Cheerio at home and do all sorts of things with him,” said Lisa. “He carries a side-saddle, goes jumping and competes in dressage. He’s a joy to have around.”

Lucinda Freedman’s middleweight hunter Big Ben has embarked on a new career – contesting workers with Hannah Horton. Here, at only their second attempt over fences, the pair claimed the novice worker title and ended the day as second reserve supreme.

“He’s been a big winner on the flat, and was third at HOYS last year and third in his weight class here,” said Hannah, another to enjoy a successful day with her team’s string. “He has the most phenomenal gallop and is a dream to ride – he’s also a natural showman over fences.”

“We really thought we weren’t going to make it”

A WEEKEND which began badly ended in triumph for Olivia Edmondson and the exciting Double Mocha, who claimed the home-produced hunter title and stood reserve supreme overall.

Manchester-based Olivia suffered a lorry breakdown – which closed the A1 for a time – which forced them to return home on the Friday.

“We really thought we weren’t going to make it at all but Jenna Tyldesley very kindly lent us her lorry so we set off again on Saturday morning,” explained Olivia. “It was definitely worth all the effort – my amazing horse didn’t let me down and I also owe my thanks to my chief groom, driver and the best mum, June Francis; I couldn’t do it without her.”

“Breeding is like a padlock”

PROGENY of Emma Edwards-Brady’s Runnon Stud-based stallion Leander dominated novice hack ranks.

The 16-year-old thoroughbred sired both the champion and reserve novice hacks: Vicky Smith’s large victor and novice reserve supreme Power Of Love – a Cuddy finalist and Ottergayle champion last year and now partnered by Elliee Stunt – and Jane Scriven’s small winner Brown Panther, with Harriet Scriven up, also produced by Steve Pitt and Vicky Smith.

Leander was also responsible for the third-placed novice large, James Woodington’s Legend In Manhattan, and Louise Fonnereau’s Runnon Littlewood, third in the novice amateur/home-produced large class.

“I was absolutely thrilled to hear this news,” said Emma. “Breeding is like a padlock – you have to try different combinations but once you find the right one, it unlocks amazing results. Leander doesn’t have lots of mares each year so this is a huge achievement.”

If you’ve decided your horse or pony is destined for a career under the bright lights of the show ring, but you’re completely new to the discipline — or competitions in general — you’ve got an exciting yet challenging road ahead.

Here are 12 things you should do before you head to your first show this season:

1. Decide what class you’re going in

Not sure what weight your hunter is? Not sure if you’re horse is a novice or an open? Tackle this by studying rule books, reading society descriptions, getting out to shows on foot and speaking to professionals, who are usually more than happy to share their tips.

2. Join the right societies

There are several showing societies on offer. Ensure you pick the right one here.

3. Get your horse show fit

He’s not meant to look like he’s running in the Grand National, but he’s also not meant to look like he’s spent a bit too long enjoying that lush summer grass. Fit not fat is the key. Overly porky horses are usually penalised.

4. Practice a go-round

Cantering around with 30 other horses in a grass arena with potentially hundreds of spectators is a scary prospect for any novice rider, let alone a novice horse. If your horse is completely new to the ring, recruit some buddies to help you out at home. Practice riding past each other in all paces. If you’re required to gallop on the go-round, make sure your horse knows when to give it his all (and when to stop)!

5. Attend some showing clinics

The show scene usually has loads of clinics held by well-respected riders and trainers up and down the country throughout winter and spring. Heading out to a clinic held specifically by a showing expert can give you some extra insight into the performance requirements you will need on show day. It pays to get ahead.

6. Service your lorry

You’ll be clocking up some serious miles on your trips to shows, especially if you live in the north.

7. Invest in a statement jacket

Of course, the judge will (or should) be looking at your horse when you’re performing in the ring, but ensuring the rider looks the part can make a huge difference to the overall picture. Make sure you stand out for the crowd by picking a unique yet traditional tweed or competition jacket you maybe haven’t seen before. Also, make sure you’ve got the correct jodhpurs and boots.

8. Get your horse some decent pre-show gear

Even if you’re lucky enough to own a bay or black horse with minimal mane and feather, you’re wise to invest in some clothing that your horse only wears the night before an outing. A lyrca bodysuit can turn a clean coat into a gleaming coat and some leg wraps can help stop hay and shavings sticking to wet legs. And if your horse is grey, good luck to you…

9. Find a groom

Or several. Bribe friends to come and help you on show day with the promise of a free picnic and maybe some bubbles.

10. Keep an eye on closing dates

It’s all well and good starting out the new year with a diary packed with summer show dates, but if you miss the sometimes very early entry closing dates, you won’t be attending any of them. Most county shows have serious amounts of admin to get through so expect entries to shut about three or four months prior to the actual day of the show. Make planning a prerogative!

11. Know your judges

If you’re a complete newbie, it can be difficult to know who likes and dislikes your horse. Speak to others who have shown under a certain judge to see if you can gauge what they like to see and what pet hates they might have. Remember that even if a judge might not like a certain ‘type’ of animal, nailing your performance on the day could really boost your placing.

12. Don’t get discouraged

It can take a while to learn the ropes and get with the show ring programme. But stay positive — everyone has to start somewhere.

As 2019 rolls on and we plan ahead for a summer of showing, H&H presents to you 12 novice horses to keep an eye out for this coming show season. Which future stars will become the ones to beat this term?

1. Bobby Brown

The Robinson Family’s prospect small hack certainly has the genes for the job, being a 3/4 brother to Suzanne Welby’s Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) victor, Elusive. The five-year-old is currently being ridden away and will be making his debut this season. “We have very high hopes for him,” said Tara Robinson.

2. KBF That Certain Night

Miranda Wallace has a new small riding horse for 2019. The four-year-old has just been purchased from Michael Cook and Tony Reynolds, who found the two time HOYS riding horse champion Broadshard Simplicity (Ridden by Jayne Ross). The scopey grey mare is out of the big winning small riding horse Berkley Square by Brief Encounter. “She will start her career this season as an intermediate show riding type with Scott Dixon and Miranda will share the ride in the riding horse classes as the season progresses,” said Emma Wallace.

3. Destiny Bay

Sarah Gwilliam is gearing geared up bringing the novice ex-racehorse out in small riding horse classes. The five-year-old bay gelding was purchased by Sarah as a two-year-old at Ascot sales. “He raced three times, unsuccessfully,” said Sarah. “He did a few in-hand classes last year and was reserve champion ROR at Royal Berkshire, Newbury County and Southern Counties show. He finished second in the novice ridden ROR class the Aintree Championships last year, which was his third show under saddle.”

4. MHS Morning Master

After winning the horse section of the Cuddy final in October, Jill Day’s exceptional four-year-old will be joining Robert Walker’s ridden team as a novice lightweight. “I can’t wait to get on him,” said Robert, when he landed the supreme in-hand title and a HOYS ticket at Bucks county show last year.

5. Briery Edykt

Jane Miller’s Arab gelding is set to compete under saddle at various Arab Horse Society and National shows. The eight-year-old grey has been successfully shown in-hand, netting titles in the UK and at the All Nations Cup in Aachen. “He actually suffered a career threatening injury but he is now sound and is working well under saddle,” said Jane. “I have used enormous amounts of bubble wrap.”

6. The Bullseye

Previously owned by John and Dora Tyner, this four-year-old bay gelding was a Dublin Horse Show winner as a two and three-year-old. Cheryl McVay-Edwards bought him in November and plans to campaign him as a novice middleweight hunter. “He will be at home during most of the season and I will be getting help from Richard Telford,” said Cheryl.

9. Inspector Montalbano

Team Reynolds will be bringing out the Aveia-sired large riding horse who is owned by Rowena Stevenson. The four-year-old, who is a previous Cuddy in-hand finalist, is backed and riding away and will be aimed at competing on the summer circuit.

8. Milltimber Little Scoundrel

The four-year-old small hack by Kilvington Scoundrel out of Pendley Chantilly Lace has had a successful in-hand career, winning his hack championships at both Aintree National Show and Equifest. His owner Lindsey Hewitt will be bringing him out under saddle this term.

9. Wonder Of Moylough

Tracey Harris bought the five-year-old heavyweight show cob as a three-year-old from Val Sheehan. After being broken last summer, the gelding has won on both of his winter outings. “I have high hopes for this boy — he is so light on his feet for a heavyweight cob,” said Tracey. “He will do a couple more winter shows before being aimed at some BSHA novice classes.”

10. Rudolph The Red Nose

Amateur rider Sarah Rimmer is set to introduce her riding horse to the show ring this season, after purchasing him in November from Micheala Wood. The gelding, by Porsch, has a strong in-hand record with several county show wins under his belt. “We are aiming towards the HOYS riding horse classes at the end of the show season,” said Sarah, who rode at HOYS in 2016 on a lightweight hunter. “He is very special and will be worth the wait.”

11. Carnsdale Let It Be

The four-year-old by Ramiro B and out of a Broadstone Ladies Man mare is set to double up as a small hunter and an intermediate show hunter for Chantelle Joslin. “Bee” has recently been broken in by Joanne Shaw at Red Shaw Equestrian. “A week after picking him up from breaking I took him to a showing clinic with Kirsty Pickles and he was an absolute saint,” said Chantelle. “He is proving to be a true gentleman which is very important to me, being home produced.”

12. Stanley Grange Larkfield

The Up With The Lark-sired four-year-old will be aimed at large riding horses and will be campaigned by owner Lisa Halshaw. “I persuaded Jerome Harforth and David Dixon of Stanley Grange to sell him to me last February after I lost my hack,” said Lisa. “I feel in love with him instantly — he moves incredibly and has beautiful conformation.” The gelding has just been backed after competing lightly in-hand at the end of last year with success.

Congratulations to the British Show Horse Association on their national championships show. The atmosphere, as always, was incredible. Classes ran smoothly and it’s so much easier to have a scheduled time for each class. The evening performances catered for everyone and the scorecards for the supremes provided great viewing for spectators.

This show allows you to showcase your animals before the finale of Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and the array of young and novice classes is great. It’s lovely to present your novices at championship level and I always think that this show is their HOYS, if you like.

One of the best new additions was a first-season show horse class. A great idea and

a real chance to get a horse out whom you may have been working quietly on, but wasn’t quite ready for a full class with a ride judge. As a producer, I do sometimes feel the pressure to get a young or backward horse to a show for an owner.

One class I would like to see at the champs — and a lot of people seem to be interested in the idea — is an owners’ class. Many people have horses produced due to work commitments and, as a professional rides their horse in the season, they are prevented from entering an amateur class, of which there are many.

It would be nice to give something back to these owners who are great supporters

of the sport. How lovely for them to ride against other owners in the same position as them, and what a high-class field it would be. Of course they are eligible to ride in open classes, but many said they would feel intimidated.

Looking forward to HOYS

We are now in the countdown to HOYS and unfortunately I was sad to hear of people objecting to animals’ heights in the lead-up to this show.

This seems to be a regular occurrence. Some are genuine and some are malicious to scupper the opposition. You are always going to have stiff competition at this level, and resorting to these tactics to thin out the classes is, I think, very extreme and unsportsmanlike.

I do believe that an annual height certificate should be exactly that, to last a year and any objections should be acted on after the close of the season.

A certificate, whether it be full or annual, should be upheld for the year. It is unfair to interrupt a season of showing.

On the upside, if you are off to HOYS, congratulations and the best of luck. If you haven’t managed to qualify, try and look back to take the positives from your season and work hard this winter to make necessary improvements.

My preparation will be much of the same, keeping the horses relaxed and ticking over with a few trips to an indoor school to acclimatise. The quandary of whether to clip or not before HOYS always arises. I would sooner clip if in doubt as there’s nothing worse than the mess of a horse’s coat breaking at the last minute.

Having been to five society championships this summer season, I have to say the BSHA certainly knows how to put on a show. Massive congratulations to all involved. You made us feel so welcome.

The venue at Addington is a huge asset and although I know it would not be big enough to cater for other society shows, the atmosphere really was wonderful. The venue looked immaculate and I had a most pleasurable time watching the best horses in the country. To dredge up an old subject I do have to say the top hats were out in force and how lovely they were to see.

The first hunter day was a successful start to being hosted by BSHA. However the choice of judges may not have been quite as meticulous as for the other classes. This is possibly why we didn’t see a high standard of horse quite so far down the line as on the other days. I personally had a very disappointing day with a horse in the middle of a very good winning streak.

I understand the HOYS hunter registrations will be staying with the BSHA for 2015, so I hope this first hunter day will now be built on to see the same choice of classes available as in other sections. The young rider hack and riding horse classes were exceptionally well supported and a range of hunter classes for 2015 would be great. The knock on effect of HOYS registrations staying with BSHA will remain to be seen. It will depend on whether the Royal International Horse Show keep their hunter registrations Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain (SHB of GB) or also join BSHA.

The adverts for horses and ponies for sale with HOYS tickets are hotting up. Selling for the past few seasons has not been easy so it will be interesting to hear how the market is going.

It is amazing to think clients were giving the same money for top show hunters 20 years ago and this would be a large price tag today. As I write I am on my way to Gorsebridge Sales with enthusiasm to find a nice horse, but in trepidation as to whether I can sell it.

When is an amateur not an amateur? That question is again rearing its head and sparking off some heated opinions.

The answer is quite simple: it’s whatever definition appears in the relevant rulebook. If a rider isn’t breaking the rules, then there’s nothing to complain about — and if you don’t like the rule, bring it up for discussion at the association or society’s annual meeting.

As I write, the British Show Horse Association is due to review its amateur status rule. Members were asked to submit suggestions and it was due to be discussed at the national championships by the rules sub-committee earlier this week (8 September). Watch this space.

The general definition of an amateur — which I have no problem with — is someone who does not derive an income from horses. Some riders think that anyone who is legitimately an amateur but also judges, or who once gained an income from horses but no longer does so, should be classed permanently as a professional.

Why? Circumstances change and you can’t penalise someone for gaining expertise. There are amateurs out there with professional standards and some do very well.

As for insisting that judges are automatically professionals — that’s absurd. Many judges are professionals, including me. Judging is a way of putting something back into the sport I love. But to be a judge, you have to prove that you can assess and/or ride horses; it has nothing to do with the way you earn your living.

It’s hard enough to get people to become judges, so don’t make it more difficult. I’ve heard riders claim that judges shouldn’t compete, but if that were the case, the showing circuit would collapse because there wouldn’t be enough judges.

High Equifest standards

It was a shame to hear, yet again, complaints that professionals should not have been at Equifest. As the concept of the show was to attract amateur riders and any competitors wanting to give novice horses experience, where does this argument come from?

When those who do are not breaking the rules, what is there to complain about?

There was plenty to be positive about at Equifest. I saw some lovely animals who were beautifully ridden as well as some who, with more experience and finesse, could hold their own in most rings.

It was a pleasure to run training classes again and to see riders who had progressed from last year. There is so much enthusiasm for these classes and often it’s a case of pointing out small changes which can bring big improvements.

Lock up your lorries

I was sad to hear of incidents of vandalism and theft, and horrified to learn that someone could stoop so low as to cut off a horse’s forelock. Then again, how stupid do you have to be to believe that a judge could be influenced by the presence or absence of forelock hair?

Thousands visited Equifest and the East of England showground became a small town. It’s impossible for show organisers to have foolproof security, so I’m afraid that to a large extent, it’s down to owners to look after their property.

Equifest isn’t alone. Earlier this year, thieves took rugs from horses’ backs, headcollars and even shavings from stables at Royal Norfolk. It’s sad, but organisers can’t police everyone who comes to a showground and I’m sure there are people with no connection to competitors who come purely to steal.

I feel sorry for the person who posted on social media that she left her horsebox unattended for 5min, but had her handbag stolen. Unfortunately, I’m not surprised.

The answer is, of course, to secure your horsebox. We wouldn’t leave our cars unlocked in a supermarket car park and be surprised if the contents were stolen and we have to take the same attitude to our horseboxes and towing vehicles.

Can I suggest looking at code-operated locks? The code can be shared on a “need to know” basis and changed at intervals. When you add up the cost of a show lorry’s contents, it is a small price to pay.

Show horse producer Robert Bell has been suspended from all British Show Horse Association (BSHA) classes and shows for three years after a disciplinary tribunal found him guilty of improper behaviour.

A hearing that took place on 20 September found Mr Bell guilty of using “abusive and foul language” at the BSHA Grassroots show at Addington in April.

It also concluded he behaved “in a threatening manner” towards a judge at the show – where his wife Louise‘s four-year-old horse Into The Blue was competing.

The panel found he had “conducted himself in a disgraceful manner” which risked bringing the association into disrepute.

Mr Bell, who is renowned for producing top-class hunters with Louise, did not attend the hearing and stepped down as a member of the BSHA and from the association’s judging panel a week before the hearing on 14 September.

He told H&H the whole case was “unnecessary, ridiculous and over the top”. He said he “pleaded guilty” and apologised “straight away” and several times subsequently in writing but that the BSHA “refused to accept it”.

He claimed he had been “upset” by the way the horse had been ridden by a judge and in the “heat of the moment” expressed his anger.

“This result doesn’t make a difference as I don’t compete in BSHA classes and only judge to give something back to the sport,” he said.

Judge John Poole told H&H: “Showing is a gentleman’s sport – you don’t expect that behaviour. I won’t be threatened, and younger judges coming on shouldn’t be put off by intimidation.”

Nigel Hollings, chairman of the BSHA, said he welcomed the tribunal’s “strong message”.

British Show Horse Association (BSHA) subscriptions have been frozen for 2011, it was revealed at the BSHA annual meeting on Sunday (31 November). But not all members were pleased.

Treasurer Peter Warren told the meeting at Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire: “2011 will be a very difficult year [financially].

“Subscription fees will not increase. However, we do not expect our shows to support association running costs.”

Roger Stack, a member of the association for 50 years and showing director of Hickstead, was unhappy that so much funding reliance is placed on sponsorship and donations.

“This association needs to stand on its own two feet,” he said. “We should put up subscriptions by £20 — it’s only the cost of an entry fee.

And professional producer Lynn Russell suggested that junior members should pay the same subscription as adults; rates are £45 for adults and £35 for members aged 15-24 years.

Chairman Nigel Hollings said the board would increase subscriptions in 2012, but felt it would be unfair to do so this year.

He also announced that the board is considering widening its dope-testing measures.

“We carried out extensive dope-testing at our national championships and all samples were negative,” said Mr Hollings.

“However, during the season we have had several calls from judges suspicious that horses may have been doped.

“We will be looking at possible measures, including dope-testing at judges’ request.”

Showing took an innovative step forward when the British Show Horse Association held its first Grass Roots Show at Addington Manor EC, Bucks last Saturday (17 April).

The show ran a mix of classes for novice and home-produced horses and special training classes for amateur riders wanting advice. It was the inspiration of BSHA board member Jo Jenkins.

“It started with conversations in the collecting rings,” explained Jo, who regularly competes cobs, hunters and riding horses at top level. “People were just missing out on the places they wanted and I wondered how we could help.”

In the training classes, riders of hacks, cobs, riding horses and coloured horses performed before Charles Le Moignan (ride) and Ali Fernyhough (conformation.) As each horse was ridden and assessed, the judges commented on their findings over the sound system, so both competitors and spectators benefited.

More advice came from fellow panel judge Simon Somers, who discussed tack and turnout with riders before they entered the ring.

“It was fantastic,” said 19-year-old Harriet Scriven, who won the hack section on Whalton Pinball Wizard. “They were really encouraging and doing this has helped me grow in confidence — I was able to relax and enjoy it.”

Harriet has been competing the eight-year-old in intermediates, but admitted that moving up to compete alongside the professionals in hack classes was nerve-racking.

Novice classes were restricted to horses which have not won a prize of £25 or more, or more than a total of £100 in affiliated showing classes before January 2010. Both professional and amateur riders were eligible to enter.

Producer Carol Bardo, whose four-year-old Saatchi was piloted by Jayne Webber to win the novice hack section and overall novice championship for hacks, cobs and riding horses, praised the concept and the venue.

“It’s a brilliant idea and a brilliant venue for youngsters — lots of space, great surfaces and plenty of room for working in — all organised by people who are respected, helpful and positive,” she said.

Afterwards, Jo Jenkins confirmed that there would be more grass roots shows. “This is definitely not a one-off,” she said.

The British Show Horse Association (BSHA) is to hold a new in hand championship at the BSHA National Championship Show at Addington in September.

There will be 15 qualifiers around the country for the BSHA Martin Wood Supreme In Hand Breeding Championship for hacks, cobs and riding horses three years and under.

The winner of the Supreme Championship will receive £1,000, and an additional £500 will be distributed between the runners-up.

Sarah Carey of the BSHA, told H&H: “The class will demonstrate the future of our ridden horses in the years to come and is an exciting opportunity to promote the show horse.”

The championship will also help promote in hand showing, which Ms Carey believes needs revival.

“I hope people will start entering their breeding prospects and it will become a show-case that will continue for many years,” said Ms Carey.

Showing “training classes” to help competitors understand what judges are looking for are to be introduced by the British Show Horse Association (BSHA) next April.

The classes will be held at the BSHA’s Midlands Spring Championship Show on 17 April and organiser Jo Jenkins told H&H: “Many people are consistently placed fifth or sixth — they want to know how to get to that next place up the line.

“People want constructive criticism, but judges are concerned they may take it the wrong way.”

In each class — for hacks, cobs and riding horses — competitors will walk, trot and canter on the right rein.

After an initial line-up, the animals will be assessed by conformation and ride judges and competitors given an individual, but brief, critique at each stage.

“For example, the ride judge might explain that, while a horse was very obedient, it was rather stiff on one rein,” Ms Jenkins explained. “There is a difference between a good ride and an obedient ride.”

The innovation follows a discussion at the BSHA’s annual meeting in November, at which young member Bonny Cole suggested judges used a marking system to ensure “transparency” in showing.

“I have experienced some ambiguous judging,” said Bonny, who is a BSHA probationary judge and a British Show Pony Society (BSPS) ride judge. “A marking system would give more clarity.”

The BSHA board rejected a marks system, deeming it to be too complicated.

Nigel Hollings, BSHA chairman, explained: “The marks system is used for BSPS classes because it’s sometimes difficult to communicate to a child why their pony has been placed down the line.

“But with BHSA classes, sometimes the exhibits are ridden by the judges and three sets of marks to add up would complicate things.”

But the training classes have been warmly welcomed by BSHA members.

“We’d originally intended only three training classes, but members have reacted so positively we’re going to have to put on more,” added Ms Jenkins.

After giving a wonderful final performance, Amy Underwood and Broadstone Dolce Vita brought the curtain down on the 2009 British Show Horse Association National Championships, as they were called forward to stand Motorail supreme champions at Addington Manor.

Judge Dinah Nicholson had no hesitation in giving the nod to the Demonstrator eight-year-old and her delighted rider. “They never put a foot wrong,” she said.

Amy is just four weeks into her partnership with the quality mare, and they only managed to fit in two outings before coming to the national championships.

“She (Broadstone Dolce Vita) gives the most amazing ride, and her manners are impeccable,” said Amy.

Earlier in the evening, Amy and her recent acquisition were the choice of Pat Monaghan and Ian Smeeth to take the Classic supreme riding horse title.

Rebecca Helliwell claimed the reserve supreme award with her five-year-old novice hack champion Tremarl Mister Mole, and Danielle Heath stood first reserve with Catherine Luscombe’s maxi cob winner Satellite.

At the end of the first evening’s championship performance, Jayne Webber clinched the Saunters Pant Hire supreme championship riding Carol Bardo’s champion riding horse, The Philanderer. The Kilvington Scoundrel eight-year-old grey gelding has enjoyed another successful season, and Jayne was delighted with his performance. “He gave the most divine ride,” she said.

Rising Stars champions Joseph Thurston and Mathemadam High Spirit filled the reserve slot, and Sadie Facchino stood first reserve with the amateur owner/rider, riding horse winner Bowood Diamond.
