All eyes are on the future as Britain reflects on a phenomenal summer of success by looking to the next goals.

British riders won 19 senior Olympic, Paralympic and European medals in the space of two months this summer – with 17 combinations sharing in the success.

There are five Brits in the eventing world top 10, as well as two each in the respective top 10s for showjumping, dressage and overall para dressage.

On top of this, British event riders are the reigning champions of all five-star events in the northern hemisphere. They also hold the titles of every four-star (long and short) in Britain this year, with the exception of Barbury – won by Andrew Nicholson.

“It’s been absolutely incredible,” British Equestrian performance director Dickie Waygood told H&H, adding that there is a combination of factors behind why Britain is so strong this year.

He explained that fielding less experienced riders – as well as established riders on less experienced horses – at key events and European Championships in recent years, has helped build that “width and depth” to Britain’s strength, with the next Olympics and World Games on the horizon.

“We haven’t been frightened of putting some younger combinations in and developing them for the future,” he said, adding building confidence has been a key part of Britain’s development.

“The only way to get experience at that level is to keep going into the arena.”

He added that this, combined with the fact that “everybody is judged on merit” makes people “hungry” as they believe they can do it.

He cited the young British side winning the Challenge Cup at the Nations Cup Final in Barcelona, plus the fact that three of the British horses on the European eventing squad are only 10 years old as two examples of building success with the future in mind.

British Eventing chief executive Helen West told H&H the summer’s results have been “absolutely incredible” and the future of young horses and riders coming through the ranks is also very exciting.

“I take my hat off to Dickie and Chris [Bartle]. The system they have in place is just phenomenal, it is so professional,” she said.

She added that Britain has always been good, but it is “too much of a coincidence” not to look at the part the current support network for high performance is playing. That includes Dickie and Chris Bartle, plus the trust and expertise in the wider support team of owners, vets and each other.

“It is very professional and I think the riders have confidence in that, and confidence breeds confidence,” she said.

“No stone is left unturned. It is such a slick beast and it was an honour to be in Avenches to witness the British results. There was a real atmosphere, bond and camaraderie [between the squad]. There is so much strength and depth, I don’t think there has ever been a time we have been in such a strong position – and there is still more to come.”

World number two Kate French heads the four-strong British modern pentathlon squad for the Tokyo Olympics.

Kate is joined by her fellow Rio 2016 Olympians Joseph Choong and James Cooke, as well as Olympic debutante Joanna Muir.

Modern pentathlon comprises fencing, swimming and showjumping on borrowed horses, culminating with the laser-run (laser pistol shooting and cross-country running).

Kate, 30, heads into the Games following her victory in the World Cup final in Hungary in May, where she set a new women’s world record in the fencing. She was also fifth at the 2016 Olympics and won silver at the 2019 European Championships.

Tokyo will be the first Olympics for Joanna, 26, who is currently ranked sixth in the world and heads the UIPM’s World Cup ranking list.

James, 30, set a new Olympic modern pentathlon swim record at the 2016 Games. In 2018, he was the first British man in more than 25 years to be crowned modern pentathlon world champion, which he followed up with gold at the 2019 Europeans.

Joseph, 26, finished 10th on his Olympic debut at Rio and has since held the world champion and world number one titles.

“This team has put in some incredibly strong performances this season and they are fully deserving of their selection to Team GB for the Tokyo Olympic Games,” said Team GB chef de mission for the Games, Mark England.

“They, along with so many other Team GB athletes, have demonstrated the determination and commitment required to perform at the highest level despite the challenging circumstances that everyone has faced over the last 13 months.

“I’d like to congratulate them all on this superb achievement and look forward to welcoming them to Tokyo next month.”

Pentathlon GB’s performance director Jan Bartu added: “It has been remarkable return to competition for our British pentathletes this year. Despite the long break from competition, the team have trained well in challenging circumstances and continued to perform well on the international stage.

“Despite not being able to conclude the Olympic Games qualification season for reasons beyond our control, the athletes still achieved the UIPM Olympic Games qualification standard, confirming the strength and depth of the team and the performance programme at Pentathlon GB, and I want to take the opportunity to congratulate the whole squad and coaches on this achievement.

“I also want to thank the whole team of staff who have supported the athletes, particularly over the past year and throughout the pandemic.

“The team selected have proven form and experience and are looking forward to representing Team GB in Tokyo, but we still have more preparation to do at home in Bath, and will continue to focus on doing everything we can to ensure we are as ready as we can be when the Games come around.”

This is the final year that the modern pentathlon will continue in its current format at the Olympics. A new look for the sport has been developed for Paris 2024, condensing all five phases into a 90 minutes to make it easier for people to follow and broadcast.

Germany proved unstoppable yet again to take their fifth British eventing Nations Cup title on the trot.

To say the Saracen Horse Feeds Houghton International Horse Trials (23-26 May) is a happy hunting ground for the German side would be an understatement, with the team making it five wins in five years.

The youthful team led from the start, with Ingrid Klimke and the exciting young mare Asha P in pole position after the dressage on 23.2 and team-mate Christoph Walher and Carjatan S in second.

Two rolled poles for Ingrid gave other nations a glimmer of hope that they could be caught. Clear showjumping rounds from all four of the Brits resulted in the team moving up from sixth to fourth ahead of cross-country.

Christoph, 25, and Carjatan S produced a masterclass in how to ride Alec Lochore’s influential track, coming home five seconds inside the time to win individually and secure Germany’s victory.

But the result was close, with just 0.6 of a penalty separating Germany (90.6) and second-placed Sweden (91.2), who are chasing Olympic qualification this year.

The Swedes showed their team’s consistency, with three riders inside the top 10, headed by second-placed Louise Romeike and Waikiki 207.

The British side, made up of three senior team debutants and Badminton winner Piggy French, continued their strong performances to record four clear jumping cross-country rounds and finish third on 99.2.

“We like it here!” laughed German chef d’equipe Hans Melzer.

“Every time we have come with a different team and everybody is so motivated to compete here.

“I thought in the beginning that the course was more twisty than in the past, but once we had walked it two or three times you could see it and in the end it was good to ride so I think Alec did a super job.”

Ingrid, 11th individually, added it is “always a pleasure” to win as a part of a team.

“It was really worth coming as it was a wonderful competition and I had two really lovely cross-country rounds with my two young mares,” she said, adding her horses “learned a lot” from the design of the course. “They showed me their quality and were a pleasure to ride.”

Jerome Robine (Quaddeldou R), who finished seventh, and Felix Etzel (Bandit 436), 19th, completed the winning side.

British team anchors Piggy French and Cooley Monsoon enjoyed a beautiful cross-country round, with the 10-year-old gelding’s ears pricked the whole way. The pair added nothing to their dressage score of 29.2 to finish fourth.

Civil engineering student Richard Coney was among the trio making their first British team appearance. The 20-year-old and his junior horse Kananaskis gave a confident performance to finish ninth individually.

“A huge amount of people put their names forwards, so to get picked is very nice, especially considering the calibre of the people here,” said Richard.

“You can never be sure how they are going to perform on the day, but he is pretty consistent across country, so he had it in him to go fast and clear, which is what he did. He was really on form.”

Bubby Upton, 20, added it was “a real honour” to be selected with Fernhill Rock Star.

“I said at the beginning of the week that I wanted a run that was fault free in every phase and that’s exactly what he did,” she said.

“He was quite feisty at the start of the cross-country and I was thinking, ‘come on, let’s concentrate on the fences here’, but he knows his job so well and really helped me out, especially in the water when I lost a rein. He just said, ‘I’ve got it, Mum’. He knows exactly what he is doing and I love him so much.”

The Badminton winner continued to show tremendous form on the weekend at Rockingham, piloting nine horses into the top four

Eliza Stoddart was “absolutely thrilled” with the consistently improving Dick O Malley and said being part of the team was “an amazing experience”.

“It’s my first team appeareance and it was a huge honour to be selected,” she said.

“I’ve had the horse for just over two seasons now, so this is amazing for his owners [the Flint Syndicate]. This was brilliant preparation for Luhmühlen, where he heads next, I hope I can build on this in the future.

“He is an unbelievable jumping horse and he really travels and gallops. His dressage is improving all the time. When he came to me he didn’t know anything on the flat, so there was a lot of work to do there and I’m sure there’s still lots to come from him.”

Izzy Taylor’s ride Allercombe Ellie has been withdrawn from the British eventing team for the Rio Olympics as she has incurred a slight injury in training.

Pippa Funnell, who was selected as travelling reserve on Billy The Biz, will now run as a member of the team.

Tina Cook has been named as the new travelling reserve with Elisabeth Murdoch’s Billy The Red.

Izzy said: “I’m really gutted and sorry for the owners and my support team. I wish Pip and all the team the best of luck out in Rio.”

This is the third time in as many years that Izzy and owners Frances Carter and Susan Holroyd have suffered disappointment with Ellie, as she was also selected for the 2014 World Equestrian Games and the 2015 Blair European Championships, but was pulled out both times because of injuries.

The British-bred Billy The Biz becomes the first horse bred by the Billy Stud — the Funnells’ enterprise with Donal Barnwell — to make it to an Olympics. This will be Pippa’s third Games — she won team silver at Sydney in 2000 riding Supreme Rock and team silver plus individual bronze with Primmore’s Pride in Athens four years later.

Pippa commented: “Firstly I’m absolutely devastated for Izzy, I know how much work it takes for everyone involved to get the horse to this level. From a personal point of view, I just feel so very privileged and honoured to be part of the team and I’m just delighted for all my connections who have helped me to get to this stage.

“It’s our first home-bred horse to be going to a Games, and whilst that’s so special for us all, it’s so tragic that Carol [Toliver, Billy The Biz’s owner, who died recently] isn’t with us to share this moment as I know she would have been so very proud. We’ll be going there to give it our absolute all.”

New travelling reserve Tina Cook was a double bronze medallist on her Olympic debut in 2008 in Hong Kong with Miners Frolic — she was actually the reserve for that team initially. Four years later she contributed to team silver in London with the same horse.

Tina and Pippa finished second and third in the CIC3* at Bramham in June. Both had strong performances in the dressage and showjumping at Barbury Castle recently, but withdrew Billy The Red and Billy The Biz to save them in case they were needed for Rio.

Equestrian team leader Dan Hughes said: “We are extremely disappointed for Izzy and her whole support team, including the horse’s owners Susan and Frances. Whilst Rio was going to be Izzy’s first Olympics, as one of the most talented British riders in the world, I am confident that it will not be her last opportunity to represent Great Britain on the world stage. In Pippa Funnell we have an extremely strong replacement, and we are confident this team has every chance of achieving medal success in Rio.”

The squad of five riders who will be heading to Rio to represent Britain at September’s Paralympics has been unveiled.

The following combinations have been selected:

• Anne Dunham (grade Ia) with the Lady Joseph Trust and Henrietta Cheetham’s Lucas Normark, a 15-year-old stallion by Ravaldi.
• Sophie Christiansen (grade Ia) with Diane Redfern’s Athene Lindebjerg, a nine-year-old mare by Gribaldi.
• Lee Pearson (grade Ib) with David and Lynda Pearson, Gillian Chinn and his own Zion, a 12-year-old gelding by Flemmingh.
• Natasha Baker (grade II) with Christian Landolt, Phil and Lorraine Baker and Dorothy Alder’s Cabral, a 15-year-old gelding by Bujak.
• Sophie Wells (grade IV) with her own Valerius, a 14-year-old gelding by Flemmingh.

Anne said: “It felt amazing to get the call – it gave me as much fizz and excitement as the very first time. There’s been such strong competition for a place on this squad.”

From this squad of five, four pairs will be chosen at a later date to form the team, while the final combination will compete as an individual at the Games.

Sophie Christiansen, Sophie Wells, Natasha and Lee were all members of the British squad that scooped 11 medals at the London 2012 Paralympics, while Rio will be Anne’s fifth Paralympics. Her first was Atlanta in 1996, when dressage made its debut as a Paralympic discipline.

Sophie Christiansen, 28, made her Paralympic debut in Athens in 2004, aged 16, and since then has racked up 21 championship medals for Britain. She will be joined in the grade Ia section, for riders whose disability most severely affects their riding, by Anne, 68, who has partnered the striking Knabstrupper stallion Lucas Normark since 2013. They recently claimed a hat-trick of high-scoring wins at the Hartpury CPEDI3*.

Grade Ib rider Lee Pearson, 42, has represented Britain at four Paralympic Games to date, accumulating 10 gold medals, as well as six world and three European titles.

Double Paralympic and five-time European champion Natasha Baker, 26, will be partnering her London ride Cabral at their second Olympics together. The grade II pair have enjoyed a great run of form recently, and are unbeaten since March 2015.

2016 is the year grade IV rider Sophie Wells’ London reserve ride Valerius gets the chance to strut his stuff on the Paralympic stage. Sophie, 26, and the 14-year-old, whom she owned for over nine years, recently posted an 80% personal best freestyle at Hartpury CPEDI3*.

“It’s very exciting and there’s an element of relief too – you work towards this for four years and selection is the first hurdle,” she said. “Now the really hard work starts! We had a really good week last week at Hartpury and I think that cemented it in the selectors’ minds.”

The British showjumping team for the Rio Olympics has been announced today (5 July).

An experienced, all-male quartet of Nick Skelton, Michael and John Whitaker and Ben Maher will be gunning for gold in Rio in just five weeks time. While the travelling reserve combination is Jessica Mendoza (Spirit T).

It may be a team that lacks some youth, but it is one that certainly doesn’t lack plenty of championship experience — with the trio of Nick, Michael and John having ridden on teams together over the past decades. Rio will be Ben’s third Olympic Games and the 33-year-old is proven when riding under pressure.

For Nick Skelton’s Big Star, it is an almighty comeback from injury for the 13-year-old stallion. The pair is the only team members to have also been a part of the gold medal-winning British team at London 2012.

They recently produced one of just eight double clears when representing Great Britain at the Nations Cup in La Baule (12-15 May). It was their first major show since finishing third the Global Champions Tour grand prix of Estoril in 2014.

Michael Whitaker and the enigmatic stallion Cassionato were part of the British team at last summer’s European Championships, where the team’s fourth place secured the Brits an Olympic qualification. They were also part of the recent winning Nations Cup team in Rome.

Brother John will also be heading to Rio with the talented, yet inexperienced, mare Ornellaia. The daughter of For Pleasure has been on great form of late and undeniably has the best man in the plate for her debut Olympic Games.

Ben Maher only started riding his Olympic mount Tic Tac in January this year, but they seem to have formed a solid partnership already and have performed well during their Nations Cup appearances this year.

The youngest of the British squad, 20-year-old Jessica Mendoza has been named as travelling reserve with her European Championships mount Spirit T.

It will no doubt be a big disappointment for Joe Clee, who has missed out on a team place with Utamaro D’Ecaussines. The 12-year-old stallion was a consistent horse for team GBR at the European Championships in Aachen, however an off-par performance at the Nations Cup in Rotterdam seem to have hampered their chances of making the Rio team.

The four combinations on the Olympic showjumping team:

• Nick Skelton and the 13-year-old stallion Big Star
• Ben Maher and the 13-year-old stallion Tic Tac
• Michael Whitaker and the 11-year-old stallion Cassionato
• John Whitaker and the 11-year-old mare Ornellaia

Reserve:

• Jessica Mendoza and the 15-year-old mare Spirit T

There were always three clear contenders for dressage team places at the Rio Olympics, but the battle for the fourth spot has been bubbling for many months and was a closely-fought contest.

H&H can now reveal the dressage riders and horses who have been chosen to represent Britain in Brazil next month. They are:

Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro — a 14-year-old KWPN gelding by Negro owned by Carl Hester, Roly Luard and Anne Barott

Charlotte and Valegro have been the lynchpins for the British team since their first championship appearance at the Europeans in Rotterdam in 2011. The pair have not competed since the European championships in Aachen in August of last year, where they won all three tests. They are unbeaten in their last 15 consecutive starts. Their next outing is at Hartpury Festival of Dressage, which takes place this week.

Carl Hester and Nip Tuck — a 12-year-old KWPN gelding by Don Ruto owned by the rider and Jane de la Mare

Carl, who turned 49 last week, has nurtured the huge gelding, known at home as Barney, throughout his career. Although he used to be very sharp, that sensitivity has worked in his favour for the higher level movements and he has become a very reliable grand prix performer. He proved this in the spooky arena at Bolesworth International last month.

Fiona Bigwood and Orthilia — an 11-year-old Oldenburg mare by Gribaldi owned by the Bigwoods and the Dahls

Stellar results over the Olympic qualifying period put this pair firmly in the frame for Rio. Sussex-based Fiona rides with a patch over her eye to mitigate the double vision she now suffers as the result of a fall in April 2014.

Spencer Wilton and Super Nova II — a 13-year-old British Hanoverian by De Niro owned by the rider and Jen Goodman

This pair have attended three shows this year and scored over 70% at least once at every one. Their 2016 high water mark came in the form of two plus-73% wins at Lier CDI in March, though they did top 74% in the grand prix special in 2015. “Neville” is a former ride of Carl Hester’s whom Spencer has been competing since early 2012. The pair were grand prix winners with over 72% at both Somerford Park and Keysoe Premier League shows this season.

The travelling reserve is: Lara Griffith and Rubin Al Asad — a 14-year-old Hannoverian by Rubin Royal owned by Dr Wilfried and Mrs Ursula Bechtolsheimer

This pair have an average score of 70.64% in the 10 grand prix and grand prix special tests contested in 2016 — including half a dozen tests in Wellington, Florida, at the beginning of the year.

Travelling reserve:

• Pippa Funnell on Billy The Biz, owned by Carol Toliver

Kitty King, Gemma Tattersall and Izzy Taylor make their Olympic debuts.

Kitty, 33, was best of the Brits at last year’s European Championships at Blair Castle, finishing fourth on Persimmon and leading the home side to team silver. In the process, she became the first British rider to win medals at pony, junior, young rider and senior level. She has produced Ceylor LAN through the grades and the pair won the CCI3* at Tattersalls last year. They recently finished fourth in the CIC3* at Bramham.

Former double young rider team gold medallist Gemma, 31, made her senior squad debut at last year’s European Championships, finishing ninth with Arctic Soul. The rider has hit exceptional form this year, taking third at Badminton (Arctic Soul) and winning the CIC3* at Bramham (Chico Bella P), as well as finishing best of the Brits in the Event Rider Masters at Chatsworth (Quicklook V).

Izzy, 33, is another former young rider medallist and has ridden at two senior European Championships, finishing sixth at last year’s event at Blair on KBIS Briarlands Matilda. Allercombe Ellie was selected for the 2014 World Equestrian Games as well as last year’s Europeans, but withdrawn both times due to injuries. She was eighth at Badminton this spring and won Tattersalls CCI3* in 2014, shortly after Izzy took over the ride from Aaron Millar.

William Fox-Pitt was a member of the silver medal-winning team at the London Olympics and picked up team silver in 2004 in Athens and team bronze in 2008 in Hong Kong. The 47-year-old has made a remarkable comeback to be selected for Rio after suffering a serious head injury in a fall last October. He and Chilli Morning have been Britain’s most successful championship combination of recent years, taking individual bronze at both the 2013 Europeans and the 2014 World Equestrian Games. William is the winner of a grand total of 20 championship medals.

All five riders who helped scoop 11 medals at the London 2012 Paralympics have been named in the list of nominated riders for Rio. Sophie Christiansen, Lee Pearson, Sophie Wells, Natasha Baker and Deb Criddle all feature on the long list, released yesterday (21 June).

Two riders have been named with two horses — Sophie Christiansen is listed with her multi-medalled London ride Janeiro 6, as well as her newer mount Athene Lindebjerg. H&H blogger Sophie Wells has Valerius nominated in addition to C Fatal Attraction.

The full list of nominated combinations in alphabetical order are:

• Natasha Adkinson (grade Ib) with Sweet Caledonia (eight-year-old mare by San Remo)
• Natasha Baker (grade II) with Cabral (15-year-old Polish sport horse)
• Heather Bennett (grade III) with Zavailantika (12-year-old mare by Rhodium)
• Sophie Christiansen (grade Ia) with Janeiro 6 (19-year-old gelding by Jacquare) and Athene Lindebjerg (nine-year-old mare by Gribaldi)
• Deb Criddle (grade III) with Akilles (16-year-old gelding by Amiral)
• Anne Dunham (grade Ia) with Lucas Normark (15-year-old gelding by Ravaldi)
• Nicky Greenhill (grade III) with Gregorian Chant (12-year-old gelding by French Kiss)
• Susanna Hext (grade II) with Abira (16-year-old gelding by Don Perignon)
• Erin Orford (grade II) with Dior (13-year-old mare by Dimaggio)
• Lee Pearson (grade Ib) with Zion (12-year-old gelding by Flemming H)
• Sophie Wells (grade IV) with Valerius (14-year-old gelding by Flemming H) and C Fatal Attraction (nine-year-old gelding by Fidertanz)

One notable absence is that of Beijing Paralympian Ricky Balshaw, who announced his retirement from the sport to become a car salesman earlier this month.

Among those with a chance of representing Britain at championships level for the first time is H&H blogger Suzanna Hext, for whom it is almost four years since the accident that left her with life-changing injuries. She described the news that she had been nominated as “completely surreal”.

The final selection of five riders will be made on 14 July, following the Hartpury CPEDI3* (6-10 July), the last opportunity for those in the running to impress the selectors.
