If you’re considering becoming a freelance groom, this is what you need to know before going alone

Catherine Waterfall spoke to individuals currently working as freelance grooms, and Bethany Stone caught up with Lucy Katan of the British Grooms Association for the essential information

Wondering how to become a freelance groom? The idea of being your own boss is appealing to many, and the freedom to choose your hours, clients and rates sounds liberating on the face of it.

Rachel, a 34-year-old former senior manager in the corporate world, decided to become a freelance groom in 2018, giving up her lucrative career for a brave new lifestyle. “I love the variety. Instead of doing the same thing day in, day out, I have a whole pool of clients, which keeps the job fresh,” she tells H&H.

Cheshire-based Rachel says her high-paying corporate job was “amazing”, but it wasn’t making her happy. “My daughter was three and I was missing all these milestones,” she explains.

“So I quit. My husband asked: ‘What are you going to do?’ I said, ‘I’ll play with ponies for a bit,’” she laughs.

Rachel worked for a livery yard for a year to improve her fitness and then started attending competitions with a local event rider to “get my eye back in”.

“Everything has grown at an enormous rate – it’s just been incredible,” she says. “I’ve been fortunate, as a lot of my work has come naturally through networking and word of mouth, so talking to people is a skill you have to develop.

What is a freelance groom?

According to Lucy Katan, executive director of the British Grooms Association (BGA), a freelance groom is self-employed, and essentially their own boss. They:

Choose their clients and the services they offer
Set their own rates and negotiate terms
Submit invoices and manage their own business finances
Are responsible for paying their own tax and national insurance (NI) via HMRC self assessment
Must provide or pay for their own insurance
Can work for multiple clients

Self-employed grooms are not entitled to employee rights such as:

Statutory sick pay
Holiday pay
Maternity/paternity leave
Employer pension contributions

What insurance do I need to be a freelance groom?

Good insurance cover is a must, and should include public liability, which protects against claims made by third parties who suffer an injury or property damage due to a freelancer’s negligence.

As well as public liability cover, Lucy recommends:

Care, custody and control cover – animal-specific clauses that protect you if a horse in your care is injured or dies due to your negligence
Personal accident insurance – essential since freelancers don’t get statutory sick pay and accidents do happen with horses

How much do freelance grooms charge?

While rates of pay vary depending on experience, services provided and distance travelled, the average for working at a local yard is around £15 per hour, whereas competition grooms charge an average of £25 per hour.

“A lot of people think going freelance means charging more, but every extra cost becomes your responsibility – sick days, holidays, equipment, transport. You have to build everything into your bottom line,” Rachel warns.

Becoming a freelance groom: what is the reality of the job?

Many grooms take the plunge into a freelance career are happy to swap job security for more independence, as is the case for 31-year-old Becca Nicholson.

“I decided to go freelance to have more flexibility and a healthier work-life balance,” she says. “Before, I’d never be able to switch off and would feel guilty taking holidays or time out. So it was time to think of myself.”

But while freelancers have the freedom to choose, the work isn’t easier. “Any competition day is generally long – averaging about 12 hours,” Becca adds. “So you must be prepared for early starts and late finishes.”

Variety is a huge part of a groom’s life. “I’ve worked for Andrew Downes for nearly six years, but I also have a showjumping client who only uses me twice a year,” says Rachel. “I love joining Team [Harry] Meade for their five-stars each year, and some jobs are one-offs.”

Rachel adds that it’s important to be flexible, and slot into whatever team you’re working with. “Being personable and willing to listen is vital,” she adds. “You have to be a sponge as there’s no ‘your way’.

“One of the ongoing challenges is ensuring that invoices get paid,” she continues. “Being upfront about costs, payment terms and what you expect from clients makes all the difference.

“The resources on the BGA website are brilliant for people who are just starting out, and communication really is key.”

Tax and finances for freelance grooms

Insurance isn’t the only cost to a self-employed groom. “There are accounting and bookkeeping costs if you choose professional help, as well as time spent on marketing, admin and client relations,” says Lucy. “You may also have the cost of a work uniform and equipment, such as clippers, to think about.”

While employers pay through pay-as-you-earn (PAYE), which deducts NI and tax automatically, and provide statutory benefits such as sick pay and a pension, self employed grooms are responsible for this themselves.

“You must register with HMRC as self-employed (usually as a sole trader) if your freelance grooming income exceeds HMRC thresholds,” says Lucy.

“Once registered, you file a self assessment tax return yearly and pay income tax and NI on profits.

“If your turnover rises above the VAT threshold (which is high at £90,000), VAT registration becomes relevant — but most sole-trader grooms are below that.

“If you earn less than a set amount, you may not need to register right away – and HMRC’s thresholds change – but the safe rule of thumb is to register before you send your first invoices once you expect to earn significant income.”

Lucy emphasises the importance of tracking your finances, which includes:

Filing tax returns/self assessments on time
Holding a separate business bank account
Setting aside money for tax and NI contributions

How can I make my business a success?

Paperwork and finances are a big part of how to become a freelance groom, but not all. “Hard work, passion and having a professional, friendly nature go a long way and get you noticed,” says Becca.

“I love meeting people, getting to know how different riders do things and learning,” Rachel adds. “Building a confidential and trusting relationship is essential as they need to feel they can rely on you completely.”

In practical terms, Lucy says freelance grooms can build their brand by listing themselves in relevant directories, such as the BGA freelance grooms directory.

“Using client agreements and having insurance shows clients you’re serious,” she adds.

She also recommends standardising your business process with clear booking terms and cancellation policies, as well as implementing formal quotes and invoicing.

She also advises joining an industry body. “BGA membership gives you insurance deals, contracts and marketing tools and professional credibility,” she adds.

Be aware of false self-employment

“False self-employment is a huge problem within our industry,” says Lucy. “We speak to grooms on a weekly basis who have been told that they are self-employed, when the reality is that they should be an employed member of staff.”

If a client starts treating you like an employee, they might:

Set fixed hours
Dictate your rate of pay
Not allow you to work for others

Lucy says it is wise to stop and reassess the situation. Steps you can take include:

Review your client agreement and clarify your status
Assert your independence (you decide your hours, negotiate terms, take on other clients)
If the situation doesn’t change, consider renegotiating your role as a proper employee or politely walking away
If necessary, get advice from the BGA or Citizens Advice

Employment law can be complicated, so it is well worth seeking professional advice. “A groom is never, ever told that they are self-employed or freelance – it’s a decision that an individual will make themselves as they are setting up their own business,” Lucy adds.

“HMRC can reclassify you as an employee, forcing back-payments of tax and NI and meaning statutory rights should have applied — this can be costly for both you and your client/employer.

“If unsure whether you are falsely self-employed, you can use HRMC’s employment status checker or contact the BGA for advice.”

The King’s birthday honours celebrate those improving humans’ and horses’ lives

People who have improved the lives of horses and people within equestrian sport are among those named on The King’s Birthday Honours List.

Nat Waran, chair of the FEI-founded equine, ethics and wellbeing commission, was appointed OBE for services to equine welfare, research and education. British Grooms Association (BGA) founder Lucy Katan (pictured) was appointed MBE, for services to sport, as was HEROS Charity founder Grace Muir, for services to charity, animal welfare and education.

A BGA spokesperson said the organisation was delighted to see recognition for Ms Katan’s “exceptional contribution to the equestrian industry and dedication to improving the lives of grooms across the UK”, citing her work to support grooms, and their bosses via the Equestrian Employers Association, nationally and internationally.

“The MBE marks a major milestone for Lucy and the BGA – not just as a personal accolade, but as a powerful moment of recognition for the essential role of grooms in the equestrian world,” the spokesperson said.

Ms Katan said she was “deeply honoured”.

“But this MBE isn’t just about me,” she said. “It belongs to every groom who gets up at dawn, works in all weathers and gives everything to the horses and riders they care for.

“They are the backbone of our sport, and they deserve recognition, respect and fair employment. This honour is proof that grooms matter – and that their contribution is finally being seen, respected and celebrated.”

Advancing welfare

Professor Waran, an honorary professor of the universities of Edinburgh and Hartpury who now lives in New Zealand, has dedicated her life to advancing animal welfare.

“ I am deeply honoured to receive this OBE, which I see as recognition of not just of my own work but also the collaborative efforts of countless colleagues, students and organisations who have worked tirelessly to advance horse welfare and improve our understanding of their needs,” she said.

“I hope this recognition will help raise the profile of equine welfare worldwide and encourage equestrians and all other key stakeholders involved with horses, to engage with the critical research and educational work that will make a positive difference to our horses’ lives.”

Prof Waran told H&H she strongly believes that if we know better, we must do better.

“Scientific knowledge regarding horse welfare has advanced and is available; the challenge lies not in discovering what is right for the horse – but in doing it,” she said.

Ms Muir set up her charity in 2006, to retrain and rehome former racehorses, and provide education for young people with special educational needs (SEN).

“Grace is driven and determined to make a change and help both horses leaving racing and young SEN people be the best and happiest they can be and meet their dreams,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Her determined nature and unwavering love of horses has developed HEROS into a charity that has helped and changed the lives of hundreds of former racehorses and a vast and ever-growing number of young people.”

Biggest honour

Ms Muir said the MBE is the biggest honour of her life.

“I am passionate about what I do, because I truly and wholly love my work, it’s my life,” she said. “To be recognised and awarded an MBE is incredible and beyond my wildest dreams. I could have not envisaged all those years ago, what HEROS has become and the journey it would take me on. I feel honoured to be at the helm of such an amazing organisation, which changes and improves the lives of horses and young people. We won’t be resting here, as there is still so much work to do and I can’t wait to see what the next chapter of HEROS has in store.”

British Empire Medals (BEM) were awarded to Liphook Equine Hospital consultant farrier David Nicholls, for services to horse welfare and farriery, and Debra Batchelor, fundraiser and volunteer at the Margaret Haes Riding Centre, for services to people with disabilities. Susan Price, chief coach of the West Suffolk Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group and RDA county chair, was also awarded a BEM for services to people with disabilities.

Cornbury House Horse Trials and Howden Way founder David Howden was appointed CBE for services to insurance.

A small act can go a long way – equestrian bosses urged to join Give Your Staff a Pizza Day

Equestrian bosses across the industry are being urged to take part in Give Your Staff a Pizza Day today (22 November).

As an annual initiative to round off its good employment week (18-22 November), the Equestrian Employers Association promotes this “tasty celebration as a simple yet deliciously fun way of rewarding grooms for their hard work and dedication”.

“The idea is simple: treat your team to pizza as a way of saying thank you,” an EEA spokesperson said.

“This small act of recognition can have a big impact on workplace morale, helping grooms and all equestrian employees to feel valued and creating a positive work environment.”

EEA chief executive Lucy Katan said taking time to recognise the hard work of staff is essential.

“Staff are the backbone of every business,” she said. “A gesture like providing pizza might seem small, but it shows your team that their hard work is noticed and appreciated.”

The EEA’s sister organisation the British Grooms Association added: “Today is all about recognising the great work that grooms do every day.

“Happy Give Your Staff a Pizza Day to all the fantastic yards who embrace good employment and have already told us they’ll be taking part.”

Training provider Haddon Training backed the call, saying small acts to show appreciation can go a long way to help boost morale and show staff they are valued.

The EEA’s Good Employment Week is an initiative “aimed at championing fair, professional, kind and compliant employment practices across the equestrian industry”.

“This important campaign highlights the importance of creating positive, supportive and legally compliant workplaces that attract and retain talented grooms,” an EEA spokesperson said.

Poor working conditions linked to anxiety and depression in grooms

Poor working conditions are linked to anxiety and depression within the equestrian workforce, according to a new survey by an industry body.

An online survey by the British Grooms Association (BGA), which ran in October and was then independently analysed, revealed the human impact of poor working conditions for grooms in the industry.

The survey report concluded that its results reveal “the serious impact poor employment practices have on the mental health and wellbeing of grooms in the equestrian industry.”

“The survey findings point to a clear answer to the core question; yes, poor employment practices, such as unpaid work, lack of contracts, unsafe conditions and excessive hours, are linked to high levels of anxiety, depression and burnout among workers,” it stated.

“These conditions not only harm individuals but also destabilise and threaten the industry, contributing to high turnover, dissatisfaction, and a sense of vulnerability among the grooms who responded.”

It added that by “prioritising fair employment practices and mental health support, the industry has an opportunity to reduce stigma and foster a healthier, more supportive environment for its workforce”.

“Encouragingly, good employment practices, where they exist, can make a positive difference,” stated the report’s conclusion.

“Grooms who feel valued, supported, and safe report greater job satisfaction and improved wellbeing. Expanding these positive practices industry-wide is not just an ideal but a necessity and a legal, moral and ethical obligation. Taking these steps can foster a healthier, more resilient workforce, ultimately benefiting grooms, the horses they care for and the wider industry.”

A total of 551 people completed the survey and respondents come from a cross-section of the industry. The largest groups that took part work in livery yards (15.25%), eventing (13.61%) and various freelance or private yard roles (14.34%).

More than 63% of the respondents are aged between 18 to 35, and nearly 62% are BGA members.

A total of 91% of respondents believed that poor employment can greatly affect mental health and wellbeing, with 65% reporting experiencing anxiety and 58% describing feeling miserable.

More than half reported feeling depressed, which the report states is “likely linked to the ongoing stress and exploitation that many workers face”.

Only 11% of respondents reported no emotional impact from their work.

“Ignoring the employment and mental health issues highlighted by this survey not only harms individual grooms but also risks wider consequences for the equestrian industry as a whole,” added the report.

“Poor mental health among workers can lead to high turnover, increased absenteeism, and decreased productivity. These outcomes create a cycle where understaffed teams face even more intense workloads, exacerbating stress and mental health challenges.

“This self-perpetuating issue underlines the economic and operational costs of not addressing worker wellbeing, making a proactive approach to employment practices a matter of sustainability for the industry.”

On the flip side, the majority (59.67%) of respondents also reported that they had experienced good employment conditions, which made them feel valued and safe.

“This is significant, as it shows that fair practices, such as reasonable working hours and respectful treatment, foster higher job satisfaction, loyalty and mental wellbeing among employees,” added the report.

“Many respondents noted that positive employment experiences contributed to their decision to stay in the industry, demonstrating how supportive work environments encourage retention and contribute to a more stable workforce. This finding highlights the impact of employers who prioritise safety, fairness, and employee well-being on long-term retention.”

The report also said that responses showed that where good employment practices are in place, they contribute positively to employee morale.

“[This suggests] that an industry-wide commitment to fair practices could improve the overall quality of work life. Addressing systemic challenges could further extend these positive outcomes, helping create a more inclusive and supportive work culture industry-wide,” it stated.

The survey was analysed by Simone Sear, who has an MA in health research – specialising in organising health and wellbeing – and spent 15 years overseeing the development and delivery of Racing Welfare’s wellbeing services.

“The quantitative survey results reveal significant issues with employment conditions among grooms, reflecting high rates of breaches of employment rights alongside negative mental health impacts,” said Ms Sear.

“There is a strong connection between poor employment practices in the equestrian industry and adverse mental health outcomes for grooms. Wage-related issues, unsafe conditions, and excessive workloads contribute to high levels of anxiety, depression, and anger, suggesting systemic issues rather than isolated cases.”

BGA executive director Lucy Katan added that the association wanted to explore the potential link between poor employment and poor mental health in grooms.

“The results are not surprising to us as we receive a volume of calls stating the synergy, but they are shocking and a stain on our industry,” she said.

“Integrity is critical at this moment in time. We simply must urgently stamp out these illegal practices that are far too commonplace and will, before long, put our sector in the public spotlight, again.”

Horse world faces ‘perfect storm’ of wage and tax increases

The equestrian industry is facing “the perfect storm” as minimum rates of pay will rise further than predicted next spring.

Businesses face soaring wage bills on top of the well-documented ongoing issues, including high interest rates and increased pressure on everyone’s finances.

There are also concerns that some in the industry have failed to move with the times over the years – they have been warned that non-compliance with the law is not an option and that HMRC is cracking down.

The living wage – the minimum rate of pay for people aged 21 and over – will rise from £11.44 to £12.21 an hour in April. The rate for 18- to 20-year-olds will increase from £8.60 to £10, as part of the phased move to a single hourly rate. Apprentices’ minimum wage will be boosted from £6.40 to £7.55.

This will mean those on low incomes will have significant pay rises. But there are serious concerns about what this will mean for businesses’ viability, and if it may lead to a rise in false self-employment, and a narrowing gap in wage progression between less and more experienced staff.

Equestrian Employers Association president Tullis Matson told H&H he is “really concerned” about the effects.

Mr Matson stressed that the workforce in the equestrian industry needs to be properly paid, and that businesses will need to reflect on where to find the money.

“It’s like the perfect storm for the industry, which is quite worrying,” he said. “This really is a tricky time for the equine industry. We will fight our way through, but I worry about the impact on certain businesses and individuals.”

He added: “The belt is already tight and it can’t go any tighter.”

National Insurance (NI) contributions for employers will rise from 13.8% to 15% on workers’ earnings. The threshold at which employers start to pay NI will change from £9,100 per year to £5,000 per year, for each employee. But the employment allowance – the amount employers can claim back from their NI bill – will increase from £5,000 to £10,000.

British Grooms Association chief executive Lucy Katan warned that the equestrian industry is already behind when it comes to good employment, so the impact of this budget will be keenly felt.

“My advice, as I’ve said before, is that the entire industry has to reduce its hours,” she told H&H, adding that for many, these rises will not be sustainable.

“By bringing it down to a 40-hour week, you reduce the impact substantially.”

She added: “They’re investing in HMRC, so we are going to see many more investigations – and targeted investigations – and our industry is already flagged. If you are an employer that is not adhering to the national minimum wage, you are going to get found out.”

What’s the difference?

Rough examples based on a 50-hour working week (wages alone, not including increased pension contributions or NI, so overall totals will be higher).

Age 21, living wage (£11.44/hr rising to £12.21/hr):

Equestrian businesses among those investigated for underpaying staff

The investigation of equestrian businesses among those that had fallen foul of national minimum wage (NMW) legislation is an important reminder of the law.

Five equestrian employers were included in a list published by the Government, of more than 500 businesses that had been found to have breached the law. The businesses have since paid back what they owed to their staff, the Government confirmed, and have faced financial penalties of up to 200% of their underpayments. The HMRC investigations concluded between 2015 and 2023.

Kevin Hollinrake, the minister for enterprise, markets and small business, said employees deserve to “get paid properly for the hard work they put in”.

“While the majority of businesses already do the right thing and pay their staff what they are owed, today’s announcement sends a message to the minority who aren’t – that there are repercussions to undercutting hard work from their staff,” he said.

The Government acknowledged that not all underpayment of the minimum wage is intentional, with which equestrian business advisor Claire King agrees.

“I have worked with a number of riders over the years that have had NMW investigations and sadly, while the most obvious area everyone thinks of is not paying workers for the hours they have worked, there are other areas that you can get tripped up on that you may not realise mean you are not paying the NMW,” she told H&H. “Riders and businesses should be aware of the pitfalls.”

These can include deducting more than the legal maximum offset for accommodation, or deducting from pay for livery or training, she explained, adding that employers should also check staff members’ dates of birth to ensure they are paying the correct amount for their age range.

H&H has reported that the NMW is increasing again on 1 April, so employers will need to know exactly how much staff should be paid.

Tullis Matson, president of the Equestrian Employers Association, told H&H: “Even though not all cases of non-compliance of the NMW is intentional, it is important to raise awareness of the consequences of not doing so, and having your name in the public domain is one of them. The upcoming rise of the NMW and [national living wage] NLW is going to be significant for equestrian employers, and it is therefore important that they understand their legal requirements.

“The focus will be on compliance, and it is noted that HMRC has been clear that the equestrian sector is of particular interest. It is the employer’s strict responsibility and liability to be compliant to the NMW and I urge them to do so to protect their business and livelihood.”

Patricia Rice, independent commissioner of the Low Pay Commission, said: “Since its introduction nearly 25 years ago, the NMW has played a vital role in protecting the earnings of the lowest-paid workers in the UK. At a time when the cost of living is rising, it is more important than ever that these workers receive the pay to which they are entitled.

“NMW underpayment not only cheats workers of their rightful due, it leaves compliant firms undercut by those who do not abide by the law. By naming the firms responsible for significant underpayment, we raise awareness of the nature and the scale of underpayment and encourage all employers to ensure that they fully comply with the law.”

‘You can’t pay bills with love’: the business of keeping horses must be made viable

The equestrian industry has to act to ensure it is viable – as 58% of employers fear they will not be able to pay staff the national minimum wage (NMW) in future.

The Government has announced that the NMW will increase from £10.42, for those over 23, to £11.44 from April 1, and this will apply to all those aged over 21.

Aiming to identify the impact this would have, the British Grooms Association (BGA) and Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) conducted a study. It found that 90% of employers are concerned about the increase, and the lowering of the age threshold, and that 21% may have to close their businesses as a result.

“There has to be change, to be viable, as well as legal,” BGA and EEA founder Lucy Katan told H&H. “It’s not viable at the moment, in so many ways. We can’t get away from the price of hay and straw, and other elements, but horses can’t care for themselves.”

Ms Katan has long advocated for working smarter, not harder; questioning whether all grooms need to arrive at 7am, and whether, as long as equine care and welfare is not affected, mucking out has to be done by 8am, for example, or horses groomed to perfection for every ride.

“We must see modernisation in the equestrian working day, or the industry will not be viable,” she said. “In our survey, 46% of employers say they will have to reduce staff hours. With the average groom’s week 50-65 hours, this is a progressive resolution. Yards must operate more efficiently – later starts, shift work, flexible working, streamlining, and reviewing livery packages. It is crucial that, especially in the competition sector, businesses that are not viable take a much-needed review of their working day. If a business is not viable it has two choices; either alter the operation or cease to trade.”

Ms Katan added that owners need to be realistic about what it costs to keep horses on livery and be prepared to pay accordingly, with which eventer Ibby Macpherson agrees.

“This is where the equine industry needs a kick up the backside,” she wrote. “Riders putting costs up means they can pay staff properly as well.”

Ibby told H&H her post had “kicked a hornets’ nest” but that it needed to be said.

“Livery clients don’t seem to see the depth of cost behind the face value of the service,” she said. “The horse industry is a hobby for many but it’s the bread and butter for many others. So many have to teach or sell horses to make it work but then you’re financing someone else’s hobby. Doing it ‘for the love of it’ doesn’t wash any more; I can’t pay my energy bills with ‘the love of it’.”

Ibby said she is not sure what the answer is. but that the industry needs to reevaluate itself and look hard at its viability.

“I can see why so many yards have gone bang as it’s not sustainable,” she said. “People have to want to change, and people wonder why there are no good staff any more. Speaking out has caused me to get a lot of flak but I’m happy to ‘take one for the team’ if it makes people more aware of the costs on both sides of the coin. Hopefully it will make owners more aware of the depth of costs and yard owners reevaluate what they charge to make businesses more sustainable – bring on the change!”

A British Equestrian (BEF) spokesman told H&H industry viability is something the BEF has been working on with the British Horse Society, Association of British Riding Schools, Pony Club and Riding for the Disabled, as well as the EEA and BGA for some time – and that Sport England has found that the current economic situation is having a negative impact across sport and physical activity.

“Wages is one element but when you add running cost increases, declining facilities through lack of investment and so on, it is a concern,” she said.

“Via our ‘health of riding schools’ work and the insight it’s provided over two years, we’ve been working with member bodies in trying to support with wider education. As an example, we funded a session looking at income diversification through setting up CIC arms alongside the more traditional sole trader model so they can generate more income through grants. Through the survey and feedback, centres told us what help they need and we’re working to deliver that with member bodies.

“This work focuses on riding schools but our participation team will continue to work with member bodies on the wider concerns. We all want the equestrian sector to be a rewarding place to work in a variety of roles, and will continue to do what we can through support and education for employers and workers.”

Bullied groom speaks up on job that was ‘killing’ a colleague as study finds illegal employment rife

More than half equestrian staff still do not have contracts, research has found – as one groom said the situation at her last job was “killing” a colleague.

The British Grooms Association (BGA) and Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) found that a “deeply concerning” 55% of grooms have no written contracts of employment, in a recent survey released to mark its 2023 Good Employment Week (20–26 November).

The BGA and EEA’s campaign for the week is focused on employers and staff “putting their hands up” if they do not fulfil the legal requirement of having a contract.

A spokesman for the associations said the statistic “demonstrates that the equestrian industry remains a place where too many yards are ignoring the most basic employment legislation”.

“Staggeringly, 75% of those in part-time or zero-hours positions also said they do not have a written contract. This is a stark figure and the BGA and EEA are using Good Employment Week 2023 to inform employers and employees to wise up.”

BGA and EEA executive director Lucy Katan said the survey shows the industry has a long way to go before it is a place of good employment.

“The first question HMRC asks when conducting an investigation is evidence of the written contract,” she said. “By not having one, employers are putting their hands up to adhering to non-compliance. The lack of a written contract is often a red flag for other employment issues within the workplace.

“More than 4,000 contracts have been produced using the EEA contract creator online tool, so why are so many employers putting their businesses at risk when an affordable solution exists? I think we are past the point of saying employers aren’t aware that it is a legal requirement!”

H&H spoke to one groom who did not have a contract and had been in her job since last May. She said it was the bullying, from another employee and her employer, that finally made her leave this month, having had advice from the BGA. She wanted to speak up in the hope her story might help others.

“They put up an ad for a new groom before I left, and what terrifies me is that they will do the same thing to someone else,” she said.

The groom said the bullying from the other employee was relentless and she was put on anti-anxiety medication, but when she told her boss about it, she was told to “grow a pair and deal with it”. She said when she resigned, her employer told her she would never work in the industry again.

“It was shocking,” she said. “I was bullied at school so I know what it is, but had never experienced it as an adult in the workplace.”

The girl said she was taking home £1,400 per month for working weeks of 70-plus hours. Her mother told H&H she looked into her payslips and wages after the job had finished and found huge discrepancies; some months her pension had been paid, some months it had not.

“I looked into her national insurance contributions and going by them, she was being paid about £9,000 per month – which she definitely wasn’t!” the mother said. “I asked a friend what it meant and she said it looks like they’ve told HMRC she was earning more than she was so they could claim it back. I’ve shopped them to HMRC and filed a constructive dismissal claim. My solicitor says they’ll likely settle out of court but it’s not the money. I want a formal apology; you can’t treat people like that.

“She’s home now but she’s skin and bone, looks like she hasn’t eaten for months. It’s been horrific.”

The groom added that she has secured another job and will not start it until a contract is signed.

“As much as I didn’t get on with the other groom, when I had to pick her off the floor in floods of tears, I told her the job would make her ill, and I wasn’t going to be in a position where it made me ill too. She was 80% of the reason I left, but I could see the job was killing her and the bosses didn’t care.”

‘I can’t afford to eat properly’ says groom, as research shows illegal employment still an issue

Nearly half all grooms are not being paid in line with the law, a survey has found, which is pushing people out of the industry and is “not fair on those who do it right”.

The Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) carried out research as a “dip test” ahead of this year’s national minimum wage (NMW) increases, which will apply from 1 April.

More than 200 people completed the survey, the aim of which was to understand how overtime and time off in lieu (TOIL) of extra hours worked are treated, and how this affects the NMW.

It found that 45% of respondents are paid either at or below the NMW but are not being paid overtime or taking TOIL. This means that their real wages are below the legal minimum, even before the increase.

“What we found was what we expected, as we hear it anecdotally all the time,” EEA and British Grooms Association (BGA) founder Lucy Katan told H&H.

“The big issue is that employers may think they’re paying the NMW but the moment you take in the overtime, they drop below it, and that’s the point. They may think they’re doing the right thing but there’s the strict liability rule – it’s your responsibility as an employer to comply with the law.”

Ms Katan stressed that the BGA and EEA are “not the regulators” – the law sets out the minimum that must be paid, and not doing so is illegal.

“I must stress that there are some excellent employers out there, who are doing everything right, but there are those who seem to think they’re above the law,” she said. “Awareness of the NMW is increasing, and I think so is the aspiration to pay it, but I think we will see more and more false self-employment – employers telling staff they’re freelance when they’re not – and ‘working pupils’, when that isn’t a legally recognised term.”

Ms Katan said compliance with the law is the only answer, to protect employers and staff, and the industry.

Comments made in response to the survey included one groom saying she “comes home and cries with tiredness”. Others said they were told they work too many hours as they are “too slow”, or that they were expected to work at competitions on their days off. One said: “There is not enough money in the sector, so sadly thinking of leaving just to be able to eat properly.” The survey found 97% of respondents work more than their contracted hours every week, but more than 50% do not log extra hours worked.

“People come into the job, they’re fine for a bit, then they realise they’re working 12-hour days and not being paid the NMW,” Ms Katan said. “They wouldn’t work in a factory under those conditions; why does it happen in the equestrian industry? It almost always ends in tears and it’s unfair on the people who do it right.”

At an EEA webinar on 6 March, HMRC NMW senior officer Sakina Oxley said unpaid overtime is a major issue. She stressed that travelling as part of work, such as to competitions or training, counts as working time and should be paid as such, as should training required to perform the job.

“If you’re required to be there, you should be paid as such,” she said.

She explained that TOIL must be taken, or extra hours paid, in the current or following pay period, weekly or monthly depending on the pay period. Workers cannot opt out of the NMW legislation by agreeing to be paid less.

In a “simplified” example of the “cost of getting things wrong”, she cited a 24-year-old groom working an extra five unpaid hours a week, which would be worth £47.50 before 1 April. With £60 deducted weekly for livery, that groom would be judged to have been underpaid £107.50, per week.

“After a year, that groom is owed £5,590,” she said. “With five workers in your yard, you could be looking at underpaying by £27,950. If you’re subject to a NMW, there’s a penalty payable to HMRC of 200% of any underpayment. That’s £55,900. It’s eye-watering, and NMW checks can go back up to six years, and you may also be named and your details publicly given.”

EEA president Tullis Matson said: “These statistics are concerning, and not only do they highlight potential non-compliance with NMW legislation, there is also the issue of the wellbeing of our equestrian staff. Failure to pay overtime or to afford employees’ TOIL may cause their average hourly rate to fall below the NMW. This can be very costly for employers, and I would strongly encourage them to regularly check the hours that their employees are working.”

Higher livery bills should follow April’s minimum wage increase

THE equestrian industry has to “work smarter”, do its calculations and know its value to remain viable with forthcoming national minimum wage (NMW) increases.

The legal minimum that can be paid to employees is to increase again on 1 April, and British Grooms Association (BGA) and Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) founder Lucy Katan said the implications are concerning for the industry.

The rate is increasing from £6.83 to £7.49 for 18- to 20-year-olds, from £9.18 to £10.18 for those aged 21 and 22, and from £9.50 to £10.42 for anyone aged 23 and over.

For a 23-year-old groom working 60 hours per week, this is an increase of £2,870 per year. Ms Katan also points out that there may be many grooms who will go up an age bracket this year; a 20-year-old currently earning £7.49, and on the same hours, will legally require an £8,392 annual pay rise when they turn 21.

“I’m really worried about this, and I don’t say that lightly,” Ms Katan told H&H. “I don’t know how some yards will afford it.”

Ms Katan added that awareness of the legal right to the NMW in the workforce is “the highest it’s ever been”, and that employers who under-pay staff face having to pay 200% of arrears – and the Government can investigate the past six years.

She said employers must protect themselves by logging all staff working hours, and recommends paying monthly rather than weekly so overtime can be paid, or time off in lieu taken, within a pay period.

But her main message is that some yards and employers have to change their mindset.

“We have to change the way the industry operates,” she said. “We’ve got to modernise and lose the old-fashioned view that the yard has to be perfect at 9am. Less hours of working will reduce the wage bill. That may not hugely benefit the groom who doesn’t get a big pay rise, but the reality could be otherwise that she doesn’t have a job.

“Yards have to change. Even starting an hour later can add up to a big saving. As long as horse welfare isn’t affected – but it won’t be if they’re mucked out a bit later, or the yard isn’t swept to perfection. You have to modernise and professionalise and run a business.”

Coach, judge and rider Ali Dane also runs a livery yard, and has joined the EEA and BGA boards.

She told H&H that although this is a significant increase, employers should be aware that the NMW goes up every year, and expect a significant rise this year owing to the economic situation. She added that this should be budgeted for on top of other rising costs.

“It was inevitable the NMW would go up significantly to reflect the cost of living,” she said. “But on the other hand, clients, whether owners of competition horses or livery clients, need to better understand the cost of keeping horses.”

She said, as H&H has previously reported, that many owners do not know how much it costs to keep horses, and that sometimes neither do the livery yards. The latter need to set a price, that covers all costs including staffing, and makes a profit, and the former have to pay it.

“Yard owners often don’t want to pass on cost increases,” she said. “They feel bad about charging the correct amount, which is crazy. In what other industry do businesses feel guilty about making a profit? But I feel many yard owners almost don’t really want to, which is bonkers.”

Ms Dane said she knows what everything costs her, and she increased her prices from 1 January to cover increases.

“I have six people working for me and everyone’s had a pay rise to reflect the cost of living,” she said. “I think yard owners need to be better at forecasting and understand how the industry is changing.”

Ms Dane said the industry has to understand modern employment and business practices and comply with changed laws.

“We’re not in the 1980s any more and people are more clued up on their rights, as they should be,” she continued. “People want career development but above all, they want to be treated fairly. I think as an industry, we’re not good at investing in people and we need to get better at that, then NMW wouldn’t be such a drama.”

Cheryl Johns, who set up yard directory Livery List followed by an online support group for yard owners, agreed that if yards work out costs, including increased wages, and set their prices to reflect this, the NMW rise should not affect business viability.

“A lot of yard owners tend to pluck an amount out of thin air,” she told H&H. “I’ve always been an advocate for working out costs and setting prices accordingly. They need to be mindful that even if they’ve just put prices up, for those who employ staff, it’s unavoidable that there will be more increases coming. Yard owners need to continuously monitor their costs or they’re subsidising other people’s horses.”

‘It’s life-changing’: grooms speak up on why it’s a great career

Grooms have been sharing the huge positives of what they do, “the best job in the world”.

H&H has reported on the industry’s staffing crisis, and many grooms have got in touch about bad experiences, and what needs to change for equestrianism to attract and keep the best employees.

But other grooms have spoken about why they love what they do so much.

Abbie Salter, head girl for international eventer Jodie Amos, told H&H she started a blog about the positives of grooming, which has proved very popular.

“There’s a bad stigma attached to being a groom,” she said. “When I started, I didn’t get paid a lot and worked long hours. I think people still think it’s like that, but it’s a good job, it’s life-changing and I’d love more people to be positive about it.”

Abbie started as a groom aged 16. She left the industry, briefly, but it drew her back.

“It’s a way of life, and I love it,” she said. “I adore the competition side; I love watching the horses and being away with them. You’re in this world where nothing else matters for a few days, just the horses in front of you.”

Abbie also loves watching young horses’ progress, and being part of a team, and said the job teaches so much, not just about horses but about life skills and responsibilities.

She added that Jodie’s yard is a good team with “the nicest bunch of owners”, and a rider who ensures her staff take time off, and that “the good definitely outweighs the bad”.

“It’s a rarity to hear anyone talk like this about this job, and I want more people to be positive,” she said. “There isn’t a day I wake up and think I don’t want to go to work; it’s the best job in the world and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Ruth Asquith, who works for Nicola Wilson and won the groom of the year title at the 2022 Horse & Hound Awards, told H&H: “The job is what you make it.”

“You have to work hard if you want to be at the top and go to the top competitions, and if you love the job and working with horses, it’s wonderful. Yes, you have to work hard but nothing in life is worth having if you haven’t had to work for it.

“There are no straight roads in horse sport and nothing is guaranteed but that moment when you’ve worked so hard and it happens; there’s nothing like it.”

British Grooms Association (BGA) founder Lucy Katan told H&H that, along with the years of work the BGA has put in to support grooms and reduce illegal employment practices, “we’ve always said it’s a great job”.

“It’s disappointing when people leave the industry,” she added. “There’s some natural egress as people don’t want to do the physical, outside work, and some leave because of injury, but a large number leave because of the working conditions, and that’s what we need to stop.

“If you enjoy the outdoor life, which is so good for physical and mental health, and love horses, what better job could there be?”

‘It is not ok to operate illegally’: work continues on good equestrian employment

Work towards ensuring good employment in the equestrian industry becomes “the norm” is continuing, as a new four-year strategy is set out.

Last month, the Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) joined forces with the equestrian industry’s major governing bodies to push for good employment practice across the industry, in its annual Good Employment Week (news, 10 November). Following this, the British Grooms Association (BGA) and EEA have launched new strategic plans for 2023-2027.

The plans set out the organisations’ “mission” to promote, support, educate and lobby, as grooms’ and employers’ representative bodies, on the importance of good employment and career opportunities in the industry. The focus will be on representing grooms in the UK, inspiring future generations and raising the profile of grooms as a rewarding career choice, assisting and educating the equestrian workforce about compliant employment, supporting mental health in the workplace, and advocating that EEA and BGA members adhere to high standards of professionalism and conduct.

“Stable staff perform a critical role in the success of an equestrian yard and the welfare of the horse. We wish for all grooms to only ever work in professional, caring, viable businesses where the legalities are adhered to, and their wellbeing is paramount,” said BGA and EEA chairman Chris Hewlett.

“Our revised strategy focuses on helping employers to achieve and maintain the best standards. Our new vision sets the tone of our plans for the future. We will continue to advocate, educate on and support good employment, as we positively believe that this is the only way to sustain the workforce of our industry.”

EEA founder and BGA executive director Lucy Katan added that the organisations “felt it was time to review their work and reset their focus”.

“It is simply wrong that we still have employers who think that the law does not apply to them. This is detrimental to the entire sector and is evidenced to have damaged our recruitment and retention of the workforce. We are now being more strategic with the message that it is not OK to operate businesses illegally; only good employment is acceptable and, together, we must strive for this to become the norm, just like it is in any other sector,” she said.

“Grooms wouldn’t work in a factory that paid below the national minimum wage, ignored all employment rights, and believed that despite the machinery being somewhat dangerous, health and safety didn’t apply in their facility – so why should they work in an equestrian yard that adheres by the same principles?”

‘Let’s be proud to call our grooms what they are’ and change industry instead, says campaigner

Grooms are proud of their job, and its title, and focus should be on making the industry better, according to a campaigner.

Lucy Katan, who set up both the British Grooms Association and the Equestrian Employers Association, as well as the International Grooms Association, says changing the job title “groom” is “not the right tactic for seeking an improvement in the recognition, respect, recruitment and retention issues in our industry”.

In a recent column for H&H, Graham Fletcher asked for ideas for a new job title, speaking of his appreciation for and the importance of grooms, but questioning whether changing the name of their job would, among other things, sell the profession better, especially to non-horsey parents of potential staff.

But Lucy told H&H: “This week I was in the stables at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and I discussed this article with many of the national and international grooms working there. They were all immensely proud of the role that perform and had no issue at all about their job title, in fact quite the opposite – they were proud of it.

“Their concerns were about their employment terms, being paid legally, suitable facilities or food provided on the shows, and still an absence of genuine respect from some riders for the importance of their position and career choice.”

Lucy added that the parade at Windsor, in honour of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, was “beautiful”.

“The way the audience cheered The Queen’s head groom,” she said. “He’s a groom, and I didn’t see much lack of respect. In my view, it’s not the name that’s an issue, it’s everything else.”

She added that she is all for differing job titles such as head groom or lead groom to differentiate between roles, but added: “Grooming is the care of a horse.

“I don’t think we should be focusing on that, but on the fact that every survey we do shows how many people aren’t being paid the national minimum wage, or that nearly half don’t have the most basic employment right of a contract. Or what about the shows where grooms have to walk half a mile to get a cup of tea, or the groom who works all hours and doesn’t get holiday?

“My sole aim is to make our industry a place of good employment.

“Let’s be proud to call our grooms what they are.”

‘If you can’t pay staff properly, your business isn’t viable’: yard owner speaks out on ‘self-made’ staffing crisis

A livery yard owner who is concerned about the industry’s future believes the staffing crisis is “entirely of our own making”.

Ali Dane, a rider, judge and coach who owns Hurston Dressage and Eventing in Oxfordshire, contacted H&H having read “with alarm” recent pieces on the plight of grooms in the sector.

She said the five staff at her small yard are legally and fairly employed, with contracts and paid sick leave, holiday and overtime.

“But many yards cannot afford to do this, and therein lies the issue,” she told H&H. “Most yards do not have a viable business model.”

Ali said she came from a corporate background — “working 60-hour weeks while trying to event five horses, which doesn’t work!” — but moved into running her yard 14 years ago.

“Because of my background, I knew what the law was but what I think is happening is that many people are starting competition or livery yards without any idea what the law actually is,” she said. “They don’t charge enough for their services, so they can’t pay their staff properly, and then the staff get treated really badly and expected to work all hours.

“I’ve been reading the articles on H&H and it’s horrific what’s been happening, but I think this staffing crisis is entirely of our own making.”

Ali is keen for as many people as possible to know of the Equestrian Employers Association (EEA), of which she had not heard until she put one of her staff on to its sister organisation, the British Grooms Association.

“I want people to know that there are employers like me, and the EEA, doing something about the awful stories we’re hearing, and that people can vote with their feet rather than putting up with being treated like that,” she said.

She cited one example of a rider, who thought he was paying his grooms legally but was not, and who said: “I can’t afford to pay them any more.”

Ali said: “In what other industry do people run businesses where they exploit staff and still don’t make enough money to live properly? I just don’t understand it.

“My prices are the highest in the area, I think, but we provide an excellent service, and I know what my unique selling point is.”

Ali explained that her corporate business-management background may give her an edge in running her yard, adding: “I’m no Alan Sugar but I know what makes a successful business; you’ve got to stand out from the crowd.”

Ali offers bespoke packages of full and competition livery, mainly for clients who are cash-rich but time-poor.

“That’s the market I cater for but a lot of yards don’t know what they should charge,” she said. “They cut prices to get people in, then they’re stuck with them, they don’t make money, so they cut back on what they think they can, which is staff costs.

“Staffing is a big effort but they’re people, who need to be treated with respect, and they’re the heart of your business. I feel we don’t have enough compassion for people, in the horse world.”

Ali said she has encountered the view that “you work with horses because you can’t do anything else” but that in her view, those who can run a successful equestrian business are “bloody clever”.

“This is not a minimum-wage job,” she added. “The minimum my staff earn is £11 per hour, and it goes up to £15 because looking after horses properly is not a minimum-wage job.”

Ali believes many employers need more education, about the relevant laws, but also in business, so they check all their costs frequently, to ensure businesses are viable, because “if you don’t understand the figures, you’re in trouble, and that’s where there’s a big gap”.

“We have to normalise talking about money and how much it costs to keep horses,” she said. “It’s an industry-wide problem, not just employers and employees, and we need to change the mindset. I think if most horse owners knew the real running costs, they’d be shocked, and you should be paying more like £10-£15 per hour for someone to take care of your horse, because of the level of knowledge needed.”

Ali added that if a yard cannot afford to pay its staff legally and make money, “your business isn’t viable and you shouldn’t be in business”.

“I’ve had kick-backs for saying that,” she said. “It’s uncomfortable but the whole industry needs a wake-up call.”

And she believes grooms and consumers should “vote with their feet”; the former by not working for employers who do not comply with the law, and the latter by calling out any bad practice they see, and realising horses are a luxury, and the true cost of their keep.

“I’d also welcome the governing bodies taking action to ensure that professional riders, who earn money competing under their umbrella, are employing staff legally,” she said.

“We need to put pressure on the culprits – they won’t change otherwise. But it’s difficult, expensive, and no one wants to ‘rock the boat’, which is why change is so slow to happen.

“These riders compete because they have their own competitive goals, and grooms should absolutely not be exploited in order for them to achieve those goals. I think we sometimes forget that leisure and competition horses are not a charitable cause that workers should give their time and energy to for free. It’s hard for grooms not to be dazzled by high-level riders, and the promise of endless support and training, but they absolutely should not waive any of their legal rights, just because they’re working for a ‘name’.

“Having made contact with the EEA recently, I’m hoping that we can start to work together to make a difference and change the workings, and eventually, the image of the industry.”

Making grooms’ working lives better – what can be done?

THE question of what more can be done to raise the profile of grooms, their value and their working conditions has come to the fore, as more examples of illegal employment surface, especially at competition yards.

H&H reported on the debate at the National Equine Forum (NEF) on the skills shortage, and how major change is needed to ensure a sustainable workforce (news, 10 March). H&H has also repeatedly covered the plight of many staff in the sector, which is notorious for its widespread lack of adherence to employment law.

Repeated surveys have shown many incidences of grooms being paid less than the minimum wage, employed without legal necessities such as contracts and paid holiday, or being told they are self-employed when they are not.

And although the same studies show that the situation is improving, H&H has heard of many competition yards at which this is not the case.

One groom, who did not want to be named, told H&H she worked +70-hour weeks for £200 in an eventing yard. She was not on the books and did not have paid holiday, or even regular days off, a contract or other legal requirements. She left to work in racing, where everything is above board, and she is paid two to three times as much, for fewer hours.

“It’s no wonder competition yards can’t get anyone,” she said.

She said in her previous job the day started at 7am and finished 10 to 12 hours later, with lunch eaten on her feet, and no time to ride her own horse, whose feed, hay and bedding she had to fund.

She says although there are good employers, much of the industry has to change.

“It needs to be regulated; it’s not legal to do what I experienced,” she said. “People have to be on the books, and have time off and be cared about. How do they get away with it?

“People have to wake up and realise that times have changed, and the industry can’t keep on as it is. Of course there are bad employees too, and some people are lazy and don’t want to work, but for every one I’ve met like that, there are about five that are really good – and those are the ones who will go elsewhere.

“I think if a lot of riders had more respect for their grooms and were grateful for them, the industry would be a better place.”

Another former eventing groom who contacted H&H worked at two yards that paid £100 for +70-hour weeks, and one rider’s attitude was that she was privileged to work for him.

She said she would start work at 6.30am, be “lucky to have 20 minutes for breakfast or time to eat a whole sandwich at lunch”, and often finish late, especially during the eventing season. Working extra hours to pack the lorry was not uncommon, followed by a 3.30am departure from the yard the next morning.

“There was never any discussion about hours,” she told H&H. “It was a case of, ‘You’re being paid £100 a week as that’s all we can afford.’ I got accommodation but at one yard, that was a mould-filled room, and at the other I lived on site so on days off the rider would wake me up to go to the gallops.”

She left when she was offered a £10 per week pay rise, and now works in healthcare, where she says she is valued and paid appropriately.

“If the horseworld paid properly and valued people, I would never have left it,” she said. “It was, ‘You should be grateful to work for me,’ but they should be grateful to have us. I’ve come back from competitions where the rider has won decent money and we’d be eating fish fingers and beans because we weren’t paid.”

The groom added that the industry has to change.

“It’s no wonder it’s in the crisis it’s in,” she said.

British Grooms Association and Equestrian Employers Association founder Lucy Katan told H&H that in general, riding schools and livery yards are now more likely to be compliant with employment law; some competition yards less so.

“Here’s some interesting maths,” she said.

“The minimum wage goes up to £9.50 per hour on 1 April and event grooms often work minimum 60 hours a week, certainly in competition season, when it can be 70 or 80. For 70 hours, that’s £34,500 per year.”

At the NEF, Ms Katan said some yards need to reevaluate working practices, as current ones do not fit a viable business model. This will become more apparent when the minimum wage goes up again, as promised, to £10 next year, and £10.50 in 2024.

She constantly sees and hears of bad employment practices.

“It’s astonishing these riders choose to go ahead; there is no excuse any more.” she said. “Is this the time we start seeing more advocates? What else can we do to raise the profile of grooms and good employment?”

Jenny Shotton, who has worked in HR for years, and as a freelance groom, can see the issue from both perspectives. Her daughter Izzy events and is on an apprenticeship scheme.

“She couldn’t do her GCSEs because of Covid so I said she might as well do her riding instead of sitting there being miserable,” Jenny told H&H. “It was amazing for her and that’s one real positive of the industry, from a mental health perspective, it can be very positive, but also damaging.”

Jenny believes the “money isn’t important because you love horses” attitude is “doing the industry a disservice”, and that the sector has plenty of opportunities to change. But she also believes there are issues on both sides.

“It’s not always about bad employers; I’ve seen students come straight from college who don’t know one end of a horse from the other and can’t hack it,” she said. “But on the other hand, the minimum wage is a legal requirement and if you can’t pay that, you shouldn’t be employing staff. Where do we go from here? It’s attitude, on both sides.”

By the book

Of course, there are competition riders who are exemplary employers, not just because they comply with all the relevant laws.

One of these is eventing European champion Nicola Wilson, who told H&H she engages an expert to ensure contracts, pensions and tax are dealt with.

“I just want it to be right and I don’t have experience with those thing so feel happier if this is taken care of for me,” said Nicola. “Yes it costs, but I have confidence they know what they are doing.

“We’re all in it together, we’re a team, and it’s so important we all look after each other. I respect everyone who works for me immensely, and value what they do for me and the horses.”

Nicola said her team works well together, and she “couldn’t do anything I’ve done without them”, adding that it is important her staff have at least a day and a half off each week to themselves.

“I appreciate everything they do, their love for the horses, their support and dedication,” she said. “I’m very flattered that my name has been mentioned as a good employer, and I hope the girls on the yard think that’s valid. I value and respect them enormously and am grateful for what they do.”

An HMRC spokesman told H&H: “All businesses, irrespective of size or sector, are responsible for paying the correct minimum wage. HMRC won’t hesitate to act to ensure that workers receive what they are legally entitled to.

“Consequences for not complying can include fines of 200% of the arrears, public naming and, for the worst offences, criminal prosecution.”

‘Without staff, we have no business’: change needed to ensure a sustainable workforce

“TOGETHER we have the ability to shape the future” is the message from experts, as they asked how we can ensure the sector has, and keeps, a sustainable workforce.

This was a key topic at the National Equine Forum on 3 March, as speakers were asked what the issues are facing the sector’s workforce, and how to combat them.

British Horse Society (BHS) chief executive James Hick, who chaired a panel discussion on the issue, said the equestrian industry is facing a “talent crunch”; an increasing shortage of talent in the sector, at all levels.

He said the BHS ran a recent survey to which 170 employers responded. This found that more than half the vacancies they had advertised in the past year, offering an average salary of £24,000 and crucial to running a successful equestrian business, went unfilled.

A second survey of workers, to which 160 people responded, asked what they looked for in an employer.

“There was a mismatch,” Mr Hick said. “Employers were looking for industry experience, long hours and working weekends and evenings, and it’s hard physical work; the 160 workers were looking for something different. They’re looking for personal development, to be able to control their hours, employment benefits – and often, work-life balance is more important than pay. That’s an important message. And underlying all this is that they’re looking for a good employer.

“Fundamentally, we’re going to have to reconfigure how we work to be able to align requirements, so people will come into the sector.”

Alison Window, owner of Mount Mascal Stables in Kent, said the skills shortage is across the board.

“We can’t get instructors, yard team, grooms or riders,” she said. “The situation as I see it is pretty catastrophic; we have massive concerns about the future of our riding school, and to me, riding schools are the fabric of the sport.

“The workforce makes the business possible; without it, we have no business.”

Ms Window said she has seen people come into the industry who are not “work ready”, qualified on paper but without the necessary skills.

“The demand for riding is there; there’s increased interest, which is great, but without the people to teach them, where do we go?” she said.

Coach Ben Mitchell Winter, manager of Littlebourne EC near London, thanked the BHS for a scholarship that allowed him to achieve his BHS stage four but added that the industry needs to make British riding schools more attractive places to work.

Lucy Katan, executive director of the British Grooms Association and Equestrian Employers Association (EEA), agreed, adding that “every survey we do shows about 40% of people are paid below the minimum wage”, even before increases come in this April.

“The HMRC has identified our sector as one of non-compliance,” she said.

In a recent EEA survey, 71% of employers said they do not think their businesses will cope with this and next year’s increases in the minimum wage. The 6.6% 2022 rise will mean an annual pay rise of £1,380.60 for a groom working 45-hour week.

“85% said they’d have to consider putting up livery fees, and 38% were concerned their businesses would no longer be viable,” Ms Katan said. “Most comments showed real concern about business viability; some said clients don’t fully understand the financial challenges of running an equestrian business.”

Ms Katan said she is concerned there will be an increase in sub-standard employment, and especially false self-employment, adding that many grooms who leave the industry do so owing to their experiences of bad employment.

“We must have good employment for a sustainable workforce,” she said. “There are excellent employers, and I believe they’re increasing but our research shows, again and again, they’re not the norm.”

Ms Katan said service charges have to increase, and yards must become more business-focused, rather than “propped up” by a workforce paid below the legal minimum, or falsely self-employed. She suggested looking at working practices; does every groom need to arrive at 7am every day, or could there be rotas used?

“Could a more flexible approach work, without compromising horse welfare?” she asked. “Do the horses have to be mucked out at 7am, or would round school hours work?

“Maybe it’s time to accept that what we’ve done in the past is not viable. The key to a sustainable workforce is good employment, which can be achieved through good business management.

“Together, we have the ability to shape the future.”

Employers urged to plan ahead for 2022 minimum wage rise

Equestrian employers have been urged to do the maths and make a plan ahead of minimum wage increases this spring.

Workers on minimum rates across all age groups will take home more money per hour from 1 April.

The national living wage – the minimum amount someone over the age of 23 can be legally paid – is rising from £8.91 to £9.50 and rates for younger workers are also rising.

The age threshold for the living wage was lowered from 25 to 23 in April this year and will be further reduced to 21 by 2024.

Based on a 40-hour working week, employers’ wage bills will be around £100 more per month for each staff member from 1 April.

Other points for businesses to be aware of are changes to the accommodation offset, which can be calculated by employers as counting towards minimum pay, which is rising from £8.36 to £8.70 a day. Employers should also be aware of the forthcoming closure of the loophole stating that a worker does not need to be paid minimum wage if they live with their employer and are treated as a member of the family.

“Employers are going to have to consider a string of options as to how to balance the books once the minimum wage increases,” a spokesman for the Equestrian Employers Association told H&H.

“The inevitable staffing cost increase has to be absorbed by the business somehow. It asks a big question, are the traditional working hours of an equestrian yard not viable any more? Considerations must include a shortening of the working day, split shifts, investment in time-saving solutions and an increase in livery and training charges.”

Take an EEA survey on the impact the changes may have

Lucy Katan, of the British Grooms Association, said she “does not think our industry is ready” for the impact of the rise.

“The question is how are yards going to cope with this?” she told H&H. “The only option is that keeping horses is going to become more expensive – I can’t see any other way around it. Yards can also become smarter in the ways they work.”

She added that “thinking outside the box” and finding ways of modernising practices, without compromising horse welfare, will be key. Looking at whether everyone needs to be on the yard to feed at 6.30am or if staggering arrival times would work, and doing the maths on potential investments that could save time, such as rubber matting, are two examples she gave.

Ms Katan said false self-employment, where people are incorrectly told they are self-employed when they should be classed as employees, remains a major issue in the horse world. She added that she has also “never heard of so many HMRC investigations in the equestrian world” as she has in 2021.

“If you are an employer and you think you are going to avoid this, you are going to get found out,” she said.

‘Don’t ever think they won’t do it’: Matthew Wright’s wife speaks out on World Suicide Prevention Day

IF efforts being made to support riders’ mental health can save even one person’s life, it will be worth everything.

Support service Riders Minds released a documentary on World Suicide Prevention Day, on 10 September, almost seven months after co-founder Matthew Wright took his own life.

Presented by journalist Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes, the film included an interview with Matthew’s wife Victoria, who set up Riders Minds with her husband.

“Whenever anyone’s saying they’re going to take their own life, or it becomes normal living with someone with a mental illness, don’t ever think they’re not going to do it,” Victoria said.

She had told Lizzie she had met Matthew through horses, how her husband was a great father to their three children, who had achieved so much in eventing. She said he might have appeared tough but was insecure, taking comments to heart, and that he had attempted to take his own life several times.

“We’d got help for him and he improved for a couple of years,” Victoria said, adding that before his death, Matthew seemed “probably the happiest he’d ever been”.

“Whether he’d planned it and had decided the time was right, I don’t know,” she said. “He sent me a message that morning that said ‘Today is the perfect day’. I look back now and think, the perfect day for what?”

Matthew spent the morning with the children on Valentine’s Day, then cooked Victoria dinner. She said he seemed normal, if reminiscing about good times, when she put the children to bed.

“I read them a story, then flicked on Facebook, all normal things you do. I came back upstairs and he was dead. He was dead. I found him, and you kick yourself; why was I on my phone, why did I not go upstairs 10 minutes earlier. I could have stopped him.”

Victoria said telling her children Daddy had died was the hardest thing she had ever done, and probably will ever do.

She explained how Matthew’s blogs on HorseandHound.co.uk, in which he was very open about his mental health, had led to many other riders’ getting in touch to relate similar stories. The British Grooms Association (BGA) then asked him to write a similar blog, and Matthew, seeing the Grooms Minds and Employers Minds services provided by the BGA, proposed a similar resource for riders.

“He was really passionate that there should be a Riders Minds,” Victoria said. A meeting with the BGA followed and Riders Minds was set up.

“We set it up and funded the start of it, because the equestrian world needed this service,” she said. “We’re adding services, so there are more things there to help people.”

Matthew’s best friend Matthew Heath, another top eventer, said the phone call about Matthew’s death was “one I won’t forget”.

He said professional riders are lucky enough to do their hobby for a living, but that while the riding itself is “the best job in the world”, the added pressure of its being a career, and “everything that goes with it”, is tough.

Clinical psychologist Duncan Law, who works with the Injured Jockeys Fund, said studies have shown almost twice as many people within racing suffer from mental health issues than the general population.

Asked why riders may be more susceptible, he said: “That’s a really important question, but a hard one.”

He added that the industry is a tough one, and a “losing one”; even stellar successes like AP McCoy have lost more times than they have won.

“The earlier we can get to people, the better we can do,” he said. “But also to start the conversation, at the start of their careers, so mental health is on the agenda. It’s a good thing for you to do, but also for your career.”

Equestrian influencer Kate Lewis, who shared her mental health issues online — she was bullied at school, then home-schooled – had reached a point where she was having “nasty thoughts about doing things to myself”. She called her GP, received the help she needed, and is now a “different person”.

“It’s nice to realise it’s possible to get to the other side,” she said. “I’d encourage anyone else to do the same as me; speak to someone and start that journey because you never know where you are in that dark tunnel; you could just have one corner left till you see the light.”

Riders Minds director Sylvia Bruce, a former very successful banker who had tried to take her own life more than once, also went to her GP and has since been “transformed”.

She said horses had always been her therapy, as did Lizzie, who asked whether, for equestrian professionals, the fact horses are not then an escape has an impact.

“I think there is an element of that,” Sylvia said. “Even when something is your passion, there’s a balance, and a tipping point, where it can go into something else and loses the passion.”

Sylvia added that she wishes Matthew could see how well Riders Minds has done, “and the fact we’re still pushing forwards for him”.

“I want Riders Minds to be the go-to for all equestrians,” she said. “If we can stop one person doing what Matthew did, then wow.”

Grooms and riders warned travel insurance may not cover them in Europe

Grooms planning to travel to Europe for work after 1 January have been urged to be aware of key changes that will apply after Brexit — as well as implications of the coronavirus.

With no trade deal as yet to apply after Britain’s departure from the EU, and the 31 December leaving date approaching, it looks likely that the European health insurance card (EHIC) will no longer be valid.

This means that from 1 January, Brits will not be eligible for free or very cheap healthcare, as is currently the case for EHIC holders.

The British Grooms Association (BGA) has warned grooms that travel insurance is a must if they are working abroad.

“Even if there is a deal and the EHIC remains, an EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance,” a BGA spokesman said. “Take out travel insurance before your trip.”

The BGA added that grooms must buy travel insurance that specifically covers them for working abroad, as many policies do not.

There are also insurance implications of Government advice regarding the coronavirus pandemic. Currently, the Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to most of Europe, including Spain and Portugal.

Nicky Blakely, of PJ Hayman adventures travel insurance, said: “Unfortunately the insurers’ definition of work does not include sporting activities as they do not provide essential services to the general public or businesses.

“Whilst we appreciate people wanting to travel, there is nothing that would persuade insurers to accept competition riding/showjumping or grooms as essential work.

“Anyone who has travelled against [Foreign Office] advice will not be covered by their policy.”

The BGA spokesman said: “So right now, even if you have travel insurance, it would be invalid.

“That means any groom (or rider) who is planning to travel to the Sunshine Tour, or is already in Spain or Portugal, will be there with absolutely no health care protection. Who is going to pay for medical costs?

“The BGA is very concerned about the wellbeing of grooms who will be travelling abroad, maybe without little choice to do so, and feels that this issue must be raised. It is also important to note that this issue is not just applicable to grooms, but also riders.”

More than half equestrian bosses still flouting employment law, survey finds

Almost 60% of British grooms are not being paid minimum wage or any overtime, while just under 80% do not receive their full holiday entitlement, a new survey has revealed.

The research, conducted by the British Grooms Association (BGA) to mark the Equestrian Employers Association’s (EEA) Good Employment Week (16-22 November) exposed continuing poor working conditions in the industry.

The survey, which attracted 1,000 responses from grooms, also found that more than a third (33%) are working a six-day week while 13% work a full seven days.

The efforts of associations like the EEA and BGA have created positive change in some areas, however, with the number of employed grooms with a written contract growing from 53% in 2019 to 61% this year, while 83% of employed grooms now get paid holiday, compared to 66% in the previous survey.

“Whilst the research shows that aspects of employment are improving within our industry, I think it is quite unthinkable that in 2020 many employers are still choosing to ignore the law,” EEA president Tullis Matson said.

“Employing your team correctly is not a choice. Employers who need support should contact the EEA to get the help and advice they need in order to comply with legal requirements and help abolish illegal employment.”

The survey also highlighted ongoing exploitation of young grooms labelled as “working pupils”. Three quarters (74%) were not paid the national minimum wage, while the majority (69%) did not receive written contracts or pay slips.

Another three quarters worked more than nine hours a day, with 90% not having any breaks during their working hours.

Working pupil arrangements often entice grooms to work for a discounted wage while they receive training but just 32% said they had received the coaching promised.

Half of the working pupils who responded to the survey were under the age of 18.

The EEA said it wanted to remind employers that although the term “working pupil” may be used to describe a position, the individual is still classed as an employee and has the same employment rights as other staff.

International grooms to be registered with and recognised by the FEI H&H Plus

Despite the cancellation of the 2020 FEI Sports Forum, where the topic was due to be discussed, progress is being made for greater recognition for grooms working in international sport. H&H speaks to FEI president Ingmar de Vos about the plans, and seeks reaction from top British groom Alan Davies and Lucy Katan of the British Grooms Association...

Registration of international grooms is on the cards as the FEI reveals plans to better recognise and support the sport’s workforce.

The topic was to be part of a discussion on grooms at the cancelled 2020 FEI Sports Forum and would mean grooms’ holding FEI registrations, as do vets.

An independent international grooms’ association, recognition of grooms as a stakeholder group at national level, groom representatives at major events and rights and responsibilities of grooms were also on the agenda.

FEI president Ingmar de Vos said grooms are “essential” to the wellbeing of the sport and horses, and their wellbeing and safety is very important to the FEI.

“Their role and status has, in my view, never been addressed properly and they have never been represented officially in the decision-making structures at international level,” he told H&H.

“Without registration or an educational framework, it’s virtually impossible to provide the support they need.

“The FEI has a duty to drive change to ensure grooms have the support they need from having a clear role and status at events to employment conditions, education and having a voice in the decision-making process.

“This is also about raising awareness and creating a shift in perception and a collective responsibility, to drive positive change for our sport.”

The FEI has a grooms’ working group, founded in 2017, which had been working towards this. The 2020 sports forum was “about setting the wheels in motion”.

“It was about better understanding of needs and rights of grooms, and the needs of the industry with regards to grooms, especially when it comes to safety and welfare of horses and the integrity of competition, the scope and why we should initiate change,” Mr de Vos said. He added that FEI registration for grooms is something the working group is “convinced is necessary”.

“Through registration, you not only identify grooms but also communicate with them, and of course this is two-way, so they can also communicate with us.

“We can positively impact horse welfare through certification and education to ensure grooms are qualified to work in the stables at events, just as we do with vets.

“It is win-win. We can provide security and a framework for grooms, which also provides added value and security for our horses and events.”

Top international groom Alan Davies told H&H progress in this area is “fantastic” .

“It can only happen with everybody working together like this. I’m very excited; it’s going to take time and it won’t be easy,” he said, adding it will “benefit everybody”, including horses.

“Ingmar is so supportive of the grooms; we need to make it that grooms are not frightened of the FEI. Grooms are such a massive part of the industry and we need to encourage people to come into the industry as career grooms, not just a transitory job.”

He added this will also help in terms of education; of grooms, but also grooms educating the FEI on the workforce’s needs, which will have positive effects on horses, shows and riders.

International body

The British Grooms Association (BGA), whose chief executive Lucy Katan was due to speak at the forum, and Show Grooms International conducted a survey to find out the most important issues to international grooms.

Of 780 people who completed the survey, an “overwhelming majority”, 89%, said there is a need for a FEI-recognised groom representative at events, and 79% felt their voices were not heard.

“This is concerning,” states the survey report. “Clearly there is a need for greater opportunities for these grooms to speak up, and be listened to.”

Mr de Vos added the FEI “is keen to support a representative body”, which must be independent, but the FEI is “more than willing”, to help set up.

Ms Katan said communication “remains positive”.

“I commend the FEI, and Ingmar particularly, for putting grooms on the agenda,” she said.

“When the working group met in March, I was proud to be able to show how the BGA is the world leader in grooms’ representation, support, education and mental health wellbeing advocacy.

“The international groom community clearly desires its own formal organisation and I look forward to working with the FEI to deliver this essential independent body.”

Information gathered from those working in equestrianism on the effect of the coronavirus could deliver a key insight into the sector’s “true health”, it is believed.

The British Grooms Association (BGA) and Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) are running an online “impact survey” to find out what effect the pandemic and associated restrictions has had on those who work in the equestrian industry.

“With a focus on those who care for horses (grooms), and those who run equestrian businesses which employ staff, the survey will provide a more in-depth understanding of the true impact,” the questionnaire states.

BGA founder and executive director Lucy Katan told H&H: “It is critical to get as many as possible to complete it…. We need to know what is happening in our sector to equestrian businesses and to those that work with horses.

“The BGA and EEA are conducting the survey to ascertain the true impact of those working, and who have businesses, within the equestrian industry.

New industry standard for freelance grooms H&H Plus

The British Grooms Association (BGA) has launched a self-certified industry standard for freelancers in a first for the equestrian world.

Its aim is to reflect the skill and professionalism of good freelance grooms by rubberstamping them as legally compliant with insurance and tax laws, as well as good health and safety practices, promoting good horse welfare and committing to continual professional development.

“We created this after requests from some of our members,” BGA chief executive Lucy Katan told H&H. “They told us they want to be recognised as professionals who are doing things right, in terms of running their own businesses, paying tax, and having the right business structure and liability insurance.

“This is about creating an industry standard and the BGA representing its membership. We are giving them the ability to stamp themselves and their businesses as the best of the best and that raises professionalism, which is what our industry needs.

“It gives the genuine freelancer a more robust recognition of what they do.”

Ms Katan added it also raises individuals’ awareness of their employment status.

The system is self-certifying, meaning it does rely on individuals telling the truth, but Ms Katan said that in an industry where reputation is crucial, lying would undermine that person’s name.

The BGA will also investigate should allegations of falsifying information arise.

Mandy Elder, who has been a freelance competition driving groom for the past 20 years, welcomed the initiative.

“I think it’s a wonderful system,” she said. “The BGA is really trying to work for us in an industry that needs to change. It is early days, but hopefully it will be a really good thing. The horse industry works a lot through word of mouth, so a sticker isn’t going to do anything unless that person follows through on their claims.

“It is a great way of showing how well-trained good freelance grooms are — it’s not just about mucking out stables, there is so much more to it than that and the BGA is helping this to be recognised.”

A work rider who faced months off work after an accident on the gallops has warned others to ensure they have the right insurance.

Hannah Johnstone damaged her anterior cruciate ligament and her media collateral ligament in the fall, in August 2018.

She was unable to work at all for two to three months, and unable to ride for eight months – and she had no cover for the loss of income.

“I was just coming up the gallops and something spooked the horse – to this day, I don’t know what – and I came off straight on to my knee,” Hannah told H&H.

“I went to hospital and they said it was just bruised, but I couldn’t move it.”

Hannah eventually had to undergo an operation in which her kneecap was shaved.

“Then I had a month just sitting and worrying about bills,” she said, adding she also had to look after her then-two-year-old daughter. “My husband’s in the army too so he was worrying about everything, especially being away.”

“Racing Welfare helped me after a while, but if only I’d had insurance, I’d have been able to recover at home and not had the stress of needing to work,” she said.

“I felt a bit lost – I didn’t know where to turn.”

Hannah worked in non-equestrian jobs for some months until her knee was strong enough to ride, since which time she has been working as a freelance groom, and is now insured through the British Grooms Association.

“The first thing I did was get my insurance sorted!” she said, urging others in her situation to make sure they are covered. “I was quite annoyed with myself for not having it, but I thought I was fine and didn’t need it.

“But you never know when an accident will happen – I rode that horse every day and it was fine, until that day, then I was out of work for months.”

Top employers to be honoured along with grooms in ‘exciting’ awards development

Anyone who knows an outstanding groom has the chance to “tell the world how brilliant they are” – while for the first time this year, employers will be recognised too.

Nominations are open for the Haddon Training British Grooms Awards, which feature an employer of the year category for the first time.

British Grooms Association (BGA) founder and executive director Lucy Katan told H&H there is no award for employers in the equestrian industry outside racing.

“So we thought we would celebrate the good ones,” she said.

“We know there are some lovely, caring, amazing and [legally] compliant employers out there so we thought it’s about time they were recognised. I think it’s a really exciting development and would encourage grooms to nominate their employers.”

The awards are aimed at “recognising brilliance, horsemanship, leadership, dedication and rewarding those individuals who go the extra mile”.

Chris Hewlett, managing director of Haddon Training which sponsors the awards, said: “The British Groom Awards are very close to my heart and Haddon Training is delighted to sponsor these prestigious awards once again. This industry is hugely indebted to the unseen workforce that gives their all ensuring the horses entrusted to their care are looked after to the highest of standards.

“For that reason I feel that it is of utmost importance for outstanding, dedicated grooms to be given the recognition they deserve.

“I am equally delighted to have the inaugural employers’ award which recognises and rewards employers who have created a safe, supportive workplace in which their employees can thrive.”

The other categories are: groom of the year, Team GBR groom of the year, manager of the year and apprentice of the year. Each winner will take home a trophy and £300, while the employer of the year will also win an overnight hotel stay in London.

Nominations close on 30 November, after which the judging panel of Jane Holderness Roddam, Mr Hewlett and supergroom Alan Davies will decide the winners. These will be revealed at a ceremony on 11 January.

Survey aims to uncover the truth about working pupil positions

A new survey aimed at grooms who may be classed as “working pupils” aims to uncover “the truth behind these practices”.

Having been contacted by a number of people who are given training on the job, and so might be labelled as working pupils, the British Grooms Association (BGA) has launched the online questionnaire to find out whether they are being employed within the law.

The equestrian industry has long featured working pupils, who work on yards and are given training in return.

But BGA and Equestrian Employers Association executive director Lucy Katan said: “Although a rider or employer would like to take someone under their wing and give them an exceptional opportunity to train and learn, quite often such arrangements have ended in tears with the ‘student’ not receiving the training promised.

“Advertising using the term and arrangement, both on your own website and publicly via social media simply puts you at risk of an investigation.”

Nicole Adams, a solicitor specialising in employment law at Clarke Willmott LLP, pointed out that the term “working pupil” has no legal or employment status, and traditional pupils are likely legally to be employees.

These grooms still have to be paid the minimum wage and benefit from workers’ rights such as paid holidays and sick leave, and employers may not offer training in lieu of money.

They can, with the employee’s consent, give training, then deduct the amount owing for this from wages, but this must be invoiced, and the training provided.

Grooms and employers are breaking the law, survey shows

The “disturbing” and illegal practice of false self-employment is still occurring in the equestrian industry, a survey has indicated.

The study, conducted by the British Grooms Association (BGA) last year, revealed that almost a fifth of respondents are told they are self-employed when this is not the case, which is breaking the law.

“This survey indicates that there is still a disturbing practice occurring in the equestrian industry, whereby employers are telling some employed grooms that they are self-employed, which is an illegal practice and tax evasion,” said BGA executive director Lucy Katan.

“Furthermore, grooms are also being denied their employment rights and benefits of being self-employed. In short, those who have been told that they are self-employed when they are not are suffering a double disadvantage.

“We would invite anyone who has been incorrectly told that they are self-employed to get in contact for advice.”

UK law states that someone is self-employed if he or she “runs their business for themselves and take responsibility for its success or failure”.

Those who are truly self-employed must be able to make decisions about their work, such as how much they charge and the hours they work.

False self-employment is illegal on employers’ part, as they are not making their contribution, but also for that of the grooms, who will pay lower tax rates than they should if they are registered as self-employed.

Groom urges others to seek help following struggle with depression

A groom has spoken openly about her mental health troubles to encourage others to talk about their problems.

The freelance groom, who has chosen not to be named, is urging others to seek help following her battle with depression.

She shared her story as part of the British Grooms Association’s (BGA) launch of its online Grooms Minds microsite, which features information and support on how to deal with difficult real-life situations faced by workers in the equine industry.

“Although the bullying from some other grooms was subtle, the lack of empathy and care shown by my employers and clients was significant,” she said.

“Over time I felt vulnerable and depressed. As my depression worsened, I kept working and just kept it to myself.

“I didn’t talk about it with anyone and I didn’t want to admit that there was anything wrong and that I wasn’t coping. In December I fell off and seriously injured by back. My consultant said I would need an operation before I could work or ride again.

“I was devastated. The combination of being out of action, on strong painkillers, stuck at home on my own, not being able to see my horses and in an unsupportive relationship became too much.”

The groom took an overdose and then called the Samaritans, who told her to call an ambulance, which she did.

“Feeling so alone was my lowest point, it made me realise how bad it had been and that I hadn’t been coping for a long time,” added the groom.

“As grooms we are so aware if a horse isn’t right or happy and it is picked up straight away.

“Whereas if it is a person or colleague it is so often ignored. I think this is where we need change and we should be looking out for each other more — maybe start treating each other like we do the horses.”

She said while she still has good and bad days, she knows that she can keep going.

“I now recognise that it is an illness and with coping mechanisms and support, I can deal with it,” she added.

“The first time I sought professional help was like a big step in the right direction.

“It really helped me because it is so important to talk and you can get help much quicker than I did. Help is out there and there is no shame in asking for it.

“If you are in a bad situation, just walk away — there are other jobs, but there is only one of you.”

The groom added the BGA’s support has been “life changing”.

“The Grooms Minds support line has been so helpful when I’ve felt down and it is so reassuring to know that they are there to talk to you 24 hours a day,” she said.

“If you think that someone is struggling, talk to them. Point them to Grooms Minds and the support line so they can know they are not alone either.”

A groom who battled with serious depression has opened up about his struggle to encourage others to seek help.

Racing Welfare has released a film featuring Duggie’s story to mark the start of Mental Health Awareness Week (14-20 May).

The Mental Health Foundation, which hosts the week, is focusing on stress this year.

Racing Welfare is one of the many equestrian bodies to be involved in promoting awareness of mental wellbeing and helping those in the industry who are going through tough times.

The British Grooms Association has also launched a helpline for its members, in conjunction with Racing Welfare, providing 24/7 support for people working in any part of the equestrian industry who are struggling.

Racing Welfare’s film, released yesterday (14 May), features the story of one of their beneficiaries, Duggie, who was helped by the charity after falling ill.

“If there’s a horse not looking right, we pick up on their attitudes in 10 seconds, but it would take you 10 weeks to notice that your mate working beside you isn’t,” said Duggie.

“I think that’s maybe where we need to start paying a bit more attention and maybe treat each other like we do the horses.

“I was doing a travelling head lad’s job at the time, so I was on the road constantly. You tend to isolate yourself, and that’s when I really started to have trouble.

“It was depression and from there I developed a lot of problems with anxiety.”

Duggie tried to take his own life more than once.

“I felt I was so absolutely worthless and useless, I just lost all self-respect for myself,” he said.

“I didn’t realise that I did actually have an illness, it wasn’t until it was explained to me about hormones and chemicals and all those sort of things that I could suddenly focus on it.

“I was like, ‘ah right, OK — that’s what is wrong with me, now I can deal with it’.”

He added opening up was the “biggest step”and encouraged others to talk to someone sooner rather than later.

“The first time I said to someone, ‘I’m not really coping here’, it was like they always say — it was a big weight off my shoulders,” he said.

“Once I realise I had problems and opened up about it, it was really good for me.

“Racing Welfare helped me out a lot last year, from the helpline that puts you in contact, right through to the social side.

“A horse can’t judge you, a horse just sees you as part of his herd — if you treat him well, he will always treat you well in return. Well, apart from the odd two-year-old colt here and there!”

Equestrian employers risk hefty fines if they fail to pay new minimum wage

Equestrian employers and workers have been reminded that the national minimum wage (NMW) goes up this week.

On 1 April the NMW will rise and non-compliant businesses run the risk of hefty fines and even criminal prosecution.

Lucy Katan, executive director of the British Grooms Association (BGA) and Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) said some riders have been fined more than £30,000 for failing to pay their staff the NMW.

“We really want to help support and educate employers on how to protect their businesses — the consequences [of not paying the NMW] can be massive,” she told H&H.

“Non-compliant employers need to watch out, HMRC is coming to get them and they are putting their businesses at risk.”

Ms Katan added that anyone can report a non-compliant business to the HMRC and they can do so anonymously.

“The equestrian industry is not immune and as more and more people become aware [that employers must pay the NMW], more people will go to HMRC and they will investigate,” she added.

The EEA and BGA have produced comprehensive guides on the NMW, with support from HMRC. The guides are individually tailored for employers and grooms to encourage greater understanding and an increased compliance with the legislation.

The bespoke guides include the different rates of NMW and national living wage, who is responsible for paying the NMW and the five most common mistakes.

A new project to raise awareness of mental health issues within the equine industry has been launched by the British Grooms Association (BGA).

The Grooms Minds initiative was launched today (10 October) to tie in with World Mental Health Day.

This comes in response to increasing numbers of grooms, riders and employers contacting the BGA for help and advice.

“My experience of being bullied whilst working at a yard was the catalyst for the formation of the BGA,” said association founder and executive director Lucy Katan.

“It is something I will never forget, and at the time there was no organisation for me, as a groom, to turn to.

“I am always concerned when we receive communications from grooms who are suffering from mental health issues in their workplace, and the BGA is determined, through the Grooms Minds project, to raise the awareness of such.”

The project aims to identify specific issues associated with mental health in the equine industry; to raise awareness of these and focus on how to address the issues.

One former groom, who did not wish to be named, said her anxiety “snuck up” on her.

“Being a groom was my dream career and I enjoyed every aspect of it,” she said.

“I didn’t feel I could talk to anyone about it because I was angry and disappointed with myself.

“I hope the Grooms Minds project will help employers and grooms themselves be more alert to their mental wellbeing.”

The BGA has also launched an anonymous survey to establish what issues are affecting grooms and how widespread these are.

Around 50 people have taken part in the survey so far, with early results showing 76% of participants have been bullied while working as a groom and 81% saying they have suffered from mental health issues or stress.

The BGA has signed up to the Sport and Recreation Alliance Mental Health Charter, which sets out how organisations should adopt good mental health practice to make activities inclusive, positive and open to everyone.

Majority of grooms earn less than minimum wage

A new organisation has been launched to support equestrian employers after it emerged that more than half of grooms were being paid less than the minimum wage.

The Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) (www.equestrianemployers.org.uk) was set up in response to the results of a study conducted by the British Grooms Association (BGA).

The survey revealed that 57% of respondents who were in an employed position were not paid the national minimum wage (NMW) or national living wage, an illegal and “awful” statistic for the industry, according to Lucy Katan, executive director of the BGA and EEA.

It also emerged that 89% of employees were aware of the NMW, although the majority were not receiving this level of income.

Non-compliance with payroll obligations was also prevalent and many grooms said they were working over their contracted hours.

“As an organisation we work to educate employers about their obligations and also inform employees of their legal rights,” said Ms Katan.

“The EEA has been launched to provide good employment advice, support and HR tools for equestrian employers.

“This can only be a good thing for equestrian businesses, staff recruitment and retention in our industry and most importantly grooms.”

The EEA offers a range of support for all those that employ staff within the horse world, including information about pensions and payrolls, legal advice and a contract creator.

Jo Sholl-Evans, who owns Fairlight Stud in north Somerset with her husband Martin Parry, said the EEA fills an important gap in the industry.

“From an employer’s perspective it was the one thing that was really missing,” she told H&H.

“Out stud has grown quickly and we now have 80 horses so need quite a team to look after it.

“We wanted to do the right thing and be on the right side of the law as well as giving our employees good job security — we didn’t want to be bad employers — but it was difficult to collate all the information out there.”

Charlotte Dujardin calls on industry to appreciate hard-working grooms

Charlotte Dujardin has become the first patron of the British Grooms Association (BGA) as the organisation celebrates its 10th anniversary.

The multiple Olympic dressage medallist said she is “very proud” to be a BGA patron and has used the moment to call on the industry to recognise hard-working grooms.

“I started my career with horses as a groom and I think that the dedication, work ethic and skills required in order to be successful in the role mean that grooms should continue to be recognised as the skilled professionals they are,” she said.

“I hope my patronage of the BGA will raise the awareness of the necessities of good employment in the equestrian workplace and encourage employers to engage with the organisation that exists to support them.

She added she encourages all grooms to join the BGA, the professional association for people who work with horses, which provides advice, support and education to both employers and employees.

‘Help us to help you’: British Grooms’ Association calls for workers to join forces

“Join us” if you want to improve working standards is the message from the British Grooms’ Association (BGA) to both grooms and employers after a post regarding employment conditions went viral.

The BGA posted a question on Facebook that had been emailed to them, asking about pay regulation and whether the association could do more to promote better pay.

“I was wondering if there is any way of enforcing regulation for groom’s wages as the National Association of Stable Staff [NASS] do?” they asked.

“We earn so much less than the minimum wage and very few of us have wage slips. Could you become more proactive in telling employers what they should be paying us?”

The BGA has responded, explaining the legal requirements for employers, the reasons why a similar arrangement to NASS cannot be brought — NASS differs as it has a body of members to negotiate with (the National Trainers Foundation) and an annually-renewed memorandum of agreement — and urging grooms to join the BGA if they want to drive real change.

The post also states that it is not in the BGA’s remit to “go out and reprimand employers that flout the law”, instead the association is focusing on education and support on the importance of employing staff legally.

“Imagine if we had 20,000 members. Imagine if all 20,000 members were educated about their employment rights and refused to work in illegal employment situations,” the post continues.

“Imagine if every illegal employment situation had no job applicants, but the good, legally-abiding employers were rewarded with the top experienced grooms applying – this would drive standards up.

“Imagine the voice and representation that grooms would have if there was a body (which there is — the BGA) and it was 20,000 strong.

“This is the BGA’s vision and we will get there in time — but we need grooms just like you and all your colleagues to belong and be proud that you have a recognised (we are a BEF member body) and professional voice acting 100% in your best interest, and on your behalf.”

The association also asked why so many grooms want change, but will not join the professional association that is working to achieve this.

The post has reached 47,000 people and sparked a huge reaction online.

Lucy Katan, executive director, told H&H today (Wednesday 8 February), that they shared the questions as they thought they were valid and wanted to see what other people’s thoughts were.

“We are very positive — we are there to support and help the employers and the grooms and together I think we can improve the situation,” she said.

She added nine employers have contacted the BGA since the post was published on 5 February, to say how annoyed they are at other businesses who do not abide by the laws.

“We are discovering a divide in the employer community — we have the employers that abide by the law and go to far efforts to do so, who are becoming quite grumpy with those who do not,” she said.

First anti-doping online learning course launched

An online e-learning course has been launched to educate grooms and riders about the importance of following the right procedures to avoid an accidental positive test for a prohibited substance in competition.

The British Grooms Association (BGA) has worked with the British Equestrian Federation to develop the Groom Clean course. The interactive e-learning module covers all aspects of anti-doping and controlled medication. Learners receive a certificate on completion of the course.

The BGA said up to now “there has been a real lack of bespoke education for grooms in this important subject matter”.

Team GBR dressage groom Alan Davies, who works for Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin, said the BGA’s groom clean “is an invaluable tool for all grooms.”

The online course “is interesting and informative and covers all of the topics in a clear and concise manner” he said.

“Clean sport is a very serious topic so it is important that grooms have access to this information. We have to be aware of so many regulations and also how our horses can be affected in many situations.”

Groom Clean e-learning, sponsored by Spillers, is free for all BGA members or can be accessed by non-members for £14.50.

The FEI’s list of controlled medication and prohibited substances is updated regularly and there is a smart phone app available on both android and iOS devices (iOS app; Android app) to help grooms and riders keep up to date with the latest changes.

Most British equestrian sport governing bodies follow the FEI’s rules when it comes to anti-doping and this applies to both amateur and professional riders alike, from grassroots level upwards, so it is every affiliated rider’s responsibility to keep up to date with the rules.

Should a horse test positive for a substance that is not allowed in competition, then the rider is considered the ‘person responsible’ and unless they can prove that there is ‘no fault’ — such as in the case of a feed or supplement contamination at the source — they can expect to face fines and a suspension or ban from competition.

New living wage to impact equestrian businesses H&H VIP

Equestrian employees aged 25 and over on the minimum wage will be entitled to a pay rise from today (1 April).

The minimum wage for all over 25s (except those in the first year of an apprenticeship) is rising from £6.70 to £7.20 an hour — an increase of 50p.

Lucy Katan, of the British Grooms Association (BGA), stressed this new “national living wage” is a legal requirement, and employers need to be prepared.

“That is going to have an impact on the employer’s business costings,” she told H&H.

“The only option for some businesses will be to increase the amount they charge for [their services]”.

Ms Katan also voiced her concern that the industry may become an “unfair employer”, preferring younger staff.

“Having said that, grooms are highly skilled individuals who work exceptionally hard and should be paid fairly,” she said.

“They should be rewarded with their salary for their dedication and skill.”

Eventer Kelly McCarthy-Maine currently employs one full-time and one part-time member of staff.

“It is a tough job — the hours are long and it takes commitment,” she said.

“But it is a professional role, so that should be recognised and employees should be rewarded.”

She added you “cannot put a price” on having the right person, but expects commitment to the job.

Simon Hall, who pays a freelance groom at his private yard, said he is “all for it” and that employees deserve to be rewarded for their work.

“You pay for what you get,” he said.

Mr Hall added that the way employees will be rewarded, in terms of money and other benefits, needs to be set out in a written contract, not verbally.

Meanwhile, racing has its own scales of pay for stable staff in line with government requirements.

The rise means the bottom-line of pay for racing staff on levels one to three (trainees, improvers and riders, grooms or yard staff) will be £288 for a basic 40-hour week compared to the current £268.

Staff aged 25 and over working on a consolidated rota — which is already over the minimum wage — will also receive a pay rise.

It also affects overtime payments for time worked away from the yard, for example when staff are at race meetings.

George McGrath, of the National Association of Stable Staff (NASS), said the living wage is a “good thing”, but there are “dark clouds” around the issue.

“I feel it is somewhat disappointing that racing has to have the government tell it that it is not paying its members enough,” he said.

“I would have hoped racing could have seen the work the lads do is worth more than the national minimum wage.”

He added he does also acknowledge the majority of the industry pays above the minimum and would advocate that a career in racing is a good way of life.

A spokesman from the British Horseracing Authority added: “While we are aware that staff wages in racing are, generally, higher than in other equine industries we would welcome anything that helps provide more funding to our grassroots.”

He said the BHA is working with the NASS to provide better career prospects and progression for those employed in the sport.

The winners of Haddon Training British Grooms Awards collected their prizes at the British Breeders Awards Dinner in London last week (16 January).

The standard of nominations in the four categories “was extremely high” said Chris Hewlett, managing director of Haddon Training, who judged the awards with Jane Holderness-Roddam and Jenny Ellis.

Adele Clarke who was nominated by her employers Vin and Liz Jones of Preci-Spark event horses was presented with the trophy for the British Grooms Award.

She also received a £350 cash prize and a two-night dinner, B&B stay at a country hotel.

The runner up was Daniel Tarpey who works for showjumper Laura Mantel.

The highly commended certificate in this category was awarded to Oscar Mayhew-Sanders, who was nominated by Tim Stockdale.

The Haddon Training Team GBR award was won by Alan Davies, who was nominated by Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin and World Class performance manager, Richard Waygood.

Davies took home a £250 cash prize, engraved trophy and weekend city break at the Grange City Hotel in London, where the awards took place.

“It’s so important that sponsors such as Haddon Training are doing this for the grooms. We have a really important job and we need to make sure there are new grooms coming through that want to dedicate themselves to working with horses,” said Davies.

The runners-up certificate was awarded to Zanie King who groomed for Laura Collett at the FEI European Eventing Championships.

The yard manager award was presented to Kate Hort who was nominated by Alex Hua Tian and Sarah Higgins of Pinfold Stables. She received a cash prize of £250 and an engraved trophy.

Rosie Harbour, who was nominated by her employer Witham Villa Equestrian Centre, won the apprentice award. The prize includes a week’s placement in a top equestrian/racing yard.

Joint highly commended certificates were awarded to Sophie McDonald, nominated by Platinum Stud and Steven Skillington, nominated by Norman Court Stud.

The judges said all the winners “have made an outstanding contribution in their careers or at the start of their career in the equestrian industry.”

Search is on to find the best grooms in the country

Two new categories have been added to the British Grooms Awards for this year.

The honours celebrate the best grooms in the equestrian industry and nominations close on 20 November.

The Haddon Training Yard Manager and The Haddon Training Apprentice are the two new accolades that have been added to the prize list.

“I wanted to further develop the grooms awards in order to recognise more employees within the equine industry and to celebrate their achievements,” said Chris Hewlett of Haddon Training.

The yard manager category is open to those that have worked in the industry for at least five years, with two years of experience as a commercial manager.

For the apprentice award, horse care students must be nominated by their employer and can be put forward up to three months after finishing their placement.

As well as these two new awards, there is also an open category and a prize for Team GBR grooms.

All grooms in the equestrian industry are eligible to be put forward for the open, while the Team GBR section welcomes nominations of any groom that supported the squads at the FEI European Championships 2015.

Caroline Heard, who works as a hunting groom as well as a showing groom and producer, took home the top honour in the open section last year.

Freelance groom Nikki Newman was runner-up.

Meanwhile, Harry Meade’s groom — Jess Errington — won the Team GBR groom prize.

Awards will be presented at the annual British Breeders’ Awards Dinner on 16 January. The event is hosted and organised by the British Horse Foundation at Grange City Hotel, London.

1. I’m usually late. If we arrange to meet after work the chances are I’m going to be late, because no matter how hard I try I am never done for 5pm. Horses are never a 9-5 job.

2. I may be away for weeks at a time with little communication. This isn’t because I’m not thinking about you, it’s because I don’t have time to think about you, call you and do my job properly.

3. My biceps are bigger than yours and I think nothing of wrestling with 500kg of horse on a daily basis. Don’t push me!

4. I am a perfectionist — although this only applies to my horses and definitely does not extend to my car or my own hair.

Equestrian apprenticeships to undergo radical overhaul

Key players from the equestrian world are working together to standardise the national equine groom apprenticeship into a qualification that fits the needs of today’s employers.

The government is currently redesigning 76 different apprenticeship schemes, from TV production to welding, and including grooms.

Currently, there are many different apprenticeship schemes open to people wanting to work with horses.

Now member bodies of the British Equestrian Federation, the British Horseracing Authority, equestrian charities, The Household Cavalry and The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, as well as representatives from polo and hunting, have become part of a steering group, facilitated by Trent Park Equestrian Centre, to standardise apprenticeships by 2017.

“The overall outcome of the reform is to ensure that every industry benefits from a well-trained workforce with transferable skills,” said Sue Martin of Trent Park Equestrian Centre.

“We will produce a standard of apprenticeship for the equine industry that is world class and builds on existing strengths, with industry and the grooms benefiting from having specialised training.”

Brian Hutton of Talland School of Equitation added: “This will give the many strands of the horseworld the opportunity to work together to create a rounded, educated, practical groom with all the skills for the future of the industry.”

Through the radical apprenticeship reform, The Department for Business Innovation and Skills aims to increase the quality of apprenticeships, put employers in the driving seat and simplify the system.

In doing so it expects that the successful apprentice will be held in the same esteem as a university graduate.

“It’s good that employers are having an input to ensure that the apprenticeship is designed to produce quality staff with the real skills they need to run their businesses. It is important to remember that an apprentice is still an employee, and must be treated as such,” Lucy Katan from the British Grooms Association told H&H.

7 reasons to be a working pupil

The term “working pupil” is used rather loosely and interpretations of what it means vary. Traditionally, working pupils were taken on as grooms and received training and work experience in lieu of payment.

“The expression ‘working pupil’ has no legal standing and sadly some young people find themselves nothing more than cheap labour. ‘Working pupils’ should be on the payroll and treated like any other employee,” says Lucy Katan from the British Grooms Association.

“We advise working pupils to ensure they have a signed, written statement of terms, outlining what their hours and obligations will be, but also what the yard will provide in terms of training and days off.”

They should be paid the national minimum wage, which varies depending on age.

Many yards offer accommodation for working pupils and allow them to bring their own horses. These costs are then, quite legitimately, deducted from wages.

Once all the terms are in place for your placement however, there are huge benefits to being a work pupil.

7 reasons to be a working pupil

1. You will experience all aspects of running a yard and managing horses from feed, health, competition and exercise management.

2. It will give you the knowledge and confidence to groom at events and understand the importance of pre- and post-competition work.

3. There will be the possibly to get NVQs or other qualifications, including those required to drive a horsebox.

4. It will prove your ability to work in a team, manage time and work long hours.

5. It will give you the chance for networking — being a working pupil is a brilliant opportunity to make contacts, including owners and sponsors.

6. Potential employers really value the experience. “Parents seem happier to pay for college but, as an employer, I would always take someone who’d been a working pupil over a college leaver,” says Georgina, wife of eventer Paul Tapner, who typically has four or five pupils. Dressage rider Andrew Gould agrees: “It’s a no-brainer. You can’t beat the experience of someone who has actually been in the industry,” he says. “Working with horses requires hard work and passion. A working pupil has already proved that commitment.”

7. It shows that you know how to work hard. “It is not just about horses. Working pupils learn how to deal with clients, sponsors and people in general,” says Andrew. “Above all it shows that you’re not afraid of hard graft.”

British Grooms Association seeks new board members

The British Grooms Association is looking for new board members.

The organisation wants to “expand and strengthen” its board of directors, by adding three volunteer non-executive directors.

The term will be two years and is voluntary.

Three people are needed:

* An employer who can help in steering the “Employer Support” work and will represent equine business employers to the association.

* An individual who has strong industry connections and an understanding of the workings of the British Equestrian Federation

* A commercial/business director who can drive the BGA’s commercial activities and advise the executive director

New insurance policies to help grooms injured at work

The British Grooms Association (BGA) has raised concerns over the increasing number of uninsured grooms who are running into financial difficulties after being injured at work.

While employed grooms are entitled to statutory sick pay (SSP), currently £85.85 a week, self-employed grooms are not entitled to receive this, leaving them with no income if they have to take time off.

The BGA’s Lucy Katan said: “This is a particularly worrying trend and in many cases has led to grooms having to sell their possessions in order to pay day-to-day bills.”

In response to this problem, the BGA has teamed up with South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) to offer a range of groom-specific policies.

“Working with horses is a high-risk occupation and I cannot stress how important it is for grooms to take out their own personal accident insurance policies to help protect their income. Most grooms say ‘I didn’t think it would happen to me’, but the sad fact is it can and it does,” added Lucy.

SEIB’s Nicolina MacKenzie, said: “We are particularly concerned about people who think they are insured but they are not.

“Some personal accident insurance cover is only applicable to leisure activities and does not cover student work placements or those who are self-employed working with horses. We would encourage more grooms to become members of the BGA and to take advantage of the insurance option to ensure that they are covered in the event of an accident.”

British Grooms Association gives free membership to group of apprentices

The British Grooms Association (BGA) has announced that it will be giving free membership to equine apprentices at Haddon Training, Wiltshire, in an effort to support a group of young grooms.

“At the BGA we strive to educate employers, grooms and their parents about correct employment practices in the equine environment,” said Lucy Katan of the BGA.

“We are delighted to team up with Haddon to offer their apprentices support, dedicated advice and a positive first step into our industry.”

Haddon Training currently has over 300 apprentices in training, all of whom will receive free membership to the BGA.

“This is a very important and exciting development,” said Haddon’s Chris Hewlett.

“Membership to the BGA provides the vital link to welfare and legal support for them, together with wider benefits that will help them throughout their careers.”

British Grooms Association and Showing Council join BEF

The British Grooms Association (BGA) and the Showing Council have become members of the British Equestrian Federation (BEF).

On 1 February the two organisations joined the 16 other independent equestrian member bodies — which include British Dressage and British Eventing.

BEF membership gives grooms and showing competitors a greater voice both with the FEI, which runs horse sport globally, and with other domestic agencies. The BEF also works to improve standards in coaching, doping control and other areas.

The BGA is the world’s only professional association for grooms.

“Being invited to join the BEF is further demonstration of the vital role the BGA holds within the industry,” said BGA executive director Lucy Katan.

“We hope that even more grooms will recognise the importance of this development and join their professional association. With the support of the BEF, the BGA can continue to make a real difference for grooms and their employers.”

The Showing Council represents an amalgamation of key showing bodies and aims to keep breeding, welfare, education and health and safety standards high.

Brian Williams of the Showing Council said the move was a “significant leap forward” for the showing world.

BEF chairman Keith Taylor added: “The experience of both organisations will bring breadth and depth to the BEF.”

Free online career advice for freelance grooms

Grooms hoping to go freelance can now get free online business and career advice from the British Grooms Association (BGA).

A new area of the BGA website, “Your Profession — Your Life”, provides free guidance for BGA members. It covers topics such as CV writing, qualifications, working abroad, insurance, and pensions and aims to support both established grooms and newcomers to the industry.

“There is so much information here — I wish I’d had it when I decided to become a freelancer,” said dressage groom Tracey Ross, who worked for Sandy Phillips at the World Equestrian Games in 2006.

From the site BGA members can download templates for accounts and freelancer-client agreements.

There is also advice on tax, wages, managing staff, taking time off for pregnancy and the pros and cons of being self-employed — to ensure aspiring grooms are under no delusions about what the job entails.

“We want grooms to be treated as professionals, but this means they must behave professionally. Your Profession — Your Life gives a groom all the tools they could need to achieve this and help drive themselves and the industry forwards,” said Lucy Katan, executive director of the BGA.

Equine nutrition qualification created for BGA members

Spillers has introduced an equine nutrition qualification exclusively for British Grooms Association (BGA) members.

The new Spillers BGA certificate of competence in equine nutrition gives BGA members the chance to improve their knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of feeding.

And is expressly designed to provide grooms with added confidence when it comes to nutrition management.

Lucy Katan, executive director of the BGA said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our members to learn more about equine nutrition direct from the experts and benefit from a certificate of competence free of charge.”

The home-study syllabus, which can be downloaded from the BGA website free of charge, is split into three sections.

It covers the digestive system, dietary components, basic feeding and common health problems and includes sections to enable readers to test their knowledge along the way.

The end of each section contains a series of revision questions to help prepare for the Certificate exam.

The manual has the added benefit of being a handy reference tool for the future, if knowledge has become a little rusty or if some reassurance is needed!

Grooms warned to have correct insurance

The British Grooms Association (BGA) is warning members they may lose money if they are not properly insured.

As part of its second birthday celebrations, the BGA has launched a premier membership scheme that covers grooms for loss of earnings if they are unable to work after an accident.

It costs £59.60 and includes cover from South Essex Insurance Brokers for personal accident, injury, temporary total disability and dental care.

The standard membership premium is £17.50, and current members can upgrade to take advantage of the insurance.

“We are acutely aware that many grooms work without personal insurance,” said the BGA’s Lucy Katan.

“If a groom in employment gets injured, the standard rate for statutory sick pay is just £79.15 a week. If they are freelance and therefore self-employed, they will get nothing.”

Grooms are covered for all aspects of their job under the policy — including general yard duties and travelling horses.

Groom Sarah Yeoman is upgrading: “Sometimes you think ‘it won’t happen to me’, but it can. I have friends in wheelchairs from riding — it’s a major wake-up call.”

Groom wins £3,000 after employer failed to provide written contract

Thousands of employers may be unwittingly breaking the law by failing to provide a written contract for staff, warns the British Grooms Association (BGA).

The warning comes after an employment tribunal awarded £3,357 to a groom whose employer failed to state clearly her terms of employment.

Terri Cowley, 22, worked as a groom for young horse producer Tim Brown from January to August 2007.

A disagreement over holiday pay and notice resulted in an employment tribunal in Leicester last February.

Mr Brown was ordered to pay compensation for unpaid holiday, underpayment of wages, failure to comply with statutory procedures or to provide written particulars

of employment.

Before Miss Cowley started work neither side discussed salary, holiday pay nor notice.

Miss Cowley said: “We talked about hours during the interview — but these got longer when he was competing, and when we worked my hourly rate out for the tribunal, it came to £3.”

But Mr Brown said the case had been “an expensive learning curve”, and argued that horses are a “24/7” job and competitions sometimes run from dawn to dusk. He said it opened up questions about how grooms should be paid.

“Employers must put a market value on accommodation, use of vehicles, lessons, stabling and employees’ horses, so everyone — employees and employers — are fully aware of the whole package,” he said. “I hope others in the industry can learn from this and take note that there are employment laws we all must adhere to.”

“This case is a prime example of why people need a contract,” said Lucy Katan of the BGA, which undertook research on this issue in 2003.

“In that survey only three out of 50 grooms had a contract. But within two months of employment, staff must by law have a written statement of the main terms of employment.

“There has to be leniency in the job, but there can also be true exploitation,” she said. “We’d never tell people how much to pay staff, but there does need to be a culture change — in racing, staff are being paid overtime now.”

She added that the BGA has “major plans” to expand its advice to employers. It has drawn up a draft statement of terms of employment which is free to download from www.britishgrooms.org.uk

New chairman for British Grooms Association

The British Grooms Association (BGA) will have a new chairman at the end of this month.

John Smales, former chief executive of the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH), said: “I’m very excited to be asked to chair the BGA. It fills an important gap in the horse world because it represents the interests of those who physically look after our horses.

“We intend to raise the status of grooms as a profession: their contribution to success in all horse sports and activities is significant and deserves more recognition.”

The BGA now has nearly 600 members following its launch at Badminton last year. Mr Smales will replace founder chairman Andrew Edwards, who stepped down in October.

Kevin Hollinrake, the minister for enterprise, markets and small business, said employees deserve to “get paid properly for the hard work they put in”.

“While the majority of businesses already do the right thing and pay their staff what they are owed, today’s announcement sends a message to the minority who aren’t – that there are repercussions to undercutting hard work from their staff,” he said.

The Government acknowledged that not all underpayment of the minimum wage is intentional, with which equestrian business advisor Claire King agrees.

These can include deducting more than the legal maximum offset for accommodation, or deducting from pay for livery or training, she explained, adding that employers should also check staff members’ dates of birth to ensure they are paying the correct amount for their age range.

“The focus will be on compliance, and it is noted that HMRC has been clear that the equestrian sector is of particular interest. It is the employer’s strict responsibility and liability to be compliant to the NMW and I urge them to do so to protect their business and livelihood.”

“There has to be change, to be viable, as well as legal,” BGA and EEA founder Lucy Katan told H&H. “It’s not viable at the moment, in so many ways. We can’t get away from the price of hay and straw, and other elements, but horses can’t care for themselves.”

Ms Katan has long advocated for working smarter, not harder; questioning whether all grooms need to arrive at 7am, and whether, as long as equine care and welfare is not affected, mucking out has to be done by 8am, for example, or horses groomed to perfection for every ride.

Ibby posted on social media about the “awkward topic of competition horse livery”, stating that she had calculated the cost at £256 per horse, per week, or £346 including exercise at £15 per hour.

“This is where the equine industry needs a kick up the backside,” she wrote. “Riders putting costs up means they can pay staff properly as well.”

Ibby told H&H her post had “kicked a hornets’ nest” but that it needed to be said.

Ibby said she is not sure what the answer is. but that the industry needs to reevaluate itself and look hard at its viability.

“Wages is one element but when you add running cost increases, declining facilities through lack of investment and so on, it is a concern,” she said.

The BGA and EEA’s campaign for the week is focused on employers and staff “putting their hands up” if they do not fulfil the legal requirement of having a contract.

A spokesman for the associations said the statistic “demonstrates that the equestrian industry remains a place where too many yards are ignoring the most basic employment legislation”.

“Staggeringly, 75% of those in part-time or zero-hours positions also said they do not have a written contract. This is a stark figure and the BGA and EEA are using Good Employment Week 2023 to inform employers and employees to wise up.”

BGA and EEA executive director Lucy Katan said the survey shows the industry has a long way to go before it is a place of good employment.

“More than 4,000 contracts have been produced using the EEA contract creator online tool, so why are so many employers putting their businesses at risk when an affordable solution exists? I think we are past the point of saying employers aren’t aware that it is a legal requirement!”

H&H spoke to one groom who did not have a contract and had been in her job since last May. She said it was the bullying, from another employee and her employer, that finally made her leave this month, having had advice from the BGA. She wanted to speak up in the hope her story might help others.

“They put up an ad for a new groom before I left, and what terrifies me is that they will do the same thing to someone else,” she said.

The groom said the bullying from the other employee was relentless and she was put on anti-anxiety medication, but when she told her boss about it, she was told to “grow a pair and deal with it”. She said when she resigned, her employer told her she would never work in the industry again.

“It was shocking,” she said. “I was bullied at school so I know what it is, but had never experienced it as an adult in the workplace.”

The girl said she was taking home £1,400 per month for working weeks of 70-plus hours. Her mother told H&H she looked into her payslips and wages after the job had finished and found huge discrepancies; some months her pension had been paid, some months it had not.

“She’s home now but she’s skin and bone, looks like she hasn’t eaten for months. It’s been horrific.”

The groom added that she has secured another job and will not start it until a contract is signed.

More than 200 people completed the survey, the aim of which was to understand how overtime and time off in lieu (TOIL) of extra hours worked are treated, and how this affects the NMW.

It found that 45% of respondents are paid either at or below the NMW but are not being paid overtime or taking TOIL. This means that their real wages are below the legal minimum, even before the increase.

Ms Katan stressed that the BGA and EEA are “not the regulators” – the law sets out the minimum that must be paid, and not doing so is illegal.

Ms Katan said compliance with the law is the only answer, to protect employers and staff, and the industry.

At an EEA webinar on 6 March, HMRC NMW senior officer Sakina Oxley said unpaid overtime is a major issue. She stressed that travelling as part of work, such as to competitions or training, counts as working time and should be paid as such, as should training required to perform the job.

“If you’re required to be there, you should be paid as such,” she said.

She explained that TOIL must be taken, or extra hours paid, in the current or following pay period, weekly or monthly depending on the pay period. Workers cannot opt out of the NMW legislation by agreeing to be paid less.

In a “simplified” example of the “cost of getting things wrong”, she cited a 24-year-old groom working an extra five unpaid hours a week, which would be worth £47.50 before 1 April. With £60 deducted weekly for livery, that groom would be judged to have been underpaid £107.50, per week.

The rate is increasing from £6.83 to £7.49 for 18- to 20-year-olds, from £9.18 to £10.18 for those aged 21 and 22, and from £9.50 to £10.42 for anyone aged 23 and over.

“I’m really worried about this, and I don’t say that lightly,” Ms Katan told H&H. “I don’t know how some yards will afford it.”

Ms Katan added that awareness of the legal right to the NMW in the workforce is “the highest it’s ever been”, and that employers who under-pay staff face having to pay 200% of arrears – and the Government can investigate the past six years.

She said employers must protect themselves by logging all staff working hours, and recommends paying monthly rather than weekly so overtime can be paid, or time off in lieu taken, within a pay period.

But her main message is that some yards and employers have to change their mindset.

“Yards have to change. Even starting an hour later can add up to a big saving. As long as horse welfare isn’t affected – but it won’t be if they’re mucked out a bit later, or the yard isn’t swept to perfection. You have to modernise and professionalise and run a business.”

She told H&H that although this is a significant increase, employers should be aware that the NMW goes up every year, and expect a significant rise this year owing to the economic situation. She added that this should be budgeted for on top of other rising costs.

“It was inevitable the NMW would go up significantly to reflect the cost of living,” she said. “But on the other hand, clients, whether owners of competition horses or livery clients, need to better understand the cost of keeping horses.”

“Yard owners often don’t want to pass on cost increases,” she said. “They feel bad about charging the correct amount, which is crazy. In what other industry do businesses feel guilty about making a profit? But I feel many yard owners almost don’t really want to, which is bonkers.”

Ms Dane said she knows what everything costs her, and she increased her prices from 1 January to cover increases.

“I have six people working for me and everyone’s had a pay rise to reflect the cost of living,” she said. “I think yard owners need to be better at forecasting and understand how the industry is changing.”

Ms Dane said the industry has to understand modern employment and business practices and comply with changed laws.

Cheryl Johns, who set up yard directory Livery List followed by an online support group for yard owners, agreed that if yards work out costs, including increased wages, and set their prices to reflect this, the NMW rise should not affect business viability.

But other grooms have spoken about why they love what they do so much.

Abbie Salter, head girl for international eventer Jodie Amos, told H&H she started a blog about the positives of grooming, which has proved very popular.

“There’s a bad stigma attached to being a groom,” she said. “When I started, I didn’t get paid a lot and worked long hours. I think people still think it’s like that, but it’s a good job, it’s life-changing and I’d love more people to be positive about it.”
