New hosts for major dressage shows after venue steps back

British Dressage (BD) has announced a series of venue changes for major Scottish summer dates.

The Scottish Championships for BD members (12-14 June), Area Festival (17-19 July) and the summer regionals (8-9 August) had been due to take place at Rockrose Equestrian, in Haddington, near Edinburgh – but BD has confirmed that owing to a “change of organisation personnel” at Rockrose, the venue has “unfortunately had to withdraw” from hosting these events.

“Following this disappointing news, the BD team at head office, in consultation with the rules and fixtures committee, has been working hard to reallocate the Area Festival and regional championships to new venues on the originally planned dates to minimise disruption to members’ competition plans,” said a BD spokesperson (1 April).

“Thanks to the co-operation and flexibility from other BD venues in Scotland, this process has been completed swiftly.”

All three fixtures will continue on their original dates; the Area Festival will take place at Netherton Equestrian, Perthshire – with an additional day on 16 July – and the regional championships at Bogenraith Equestrian, Aberdeenshire. The Scottish Championships will run at Highfield at Howe, Fife.

“We appreciate that some members will be impacted by the change in geographical location for these fixtures. However, due to the short timescales involved, it was important to allocate based on the original tender applications we received and select venues that have run major dates previously, with a proven track record in organising these events and providing the required standard of facilities to meet our competition criteria,” said a BD spokesperson.

“BD would like to thank the organisers at Netherton, Bogenraith, and Highfield for their support, as well as our members for their understanding. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Rockrose Equestrian for their support of BD over the past decade and we hope to see them hosting again in future.”

On 31 March James Cunningham at Rockrose Equestrian thanked the dressage organising team at the venue, including the South East Scotland Dressage Group, Liz Anne Dobson and the current committee of Harry Payne, Linda Faulks and Sarah McLean, for “all their help and for running these shows so well for me over the last 10 years” – and all the volunteers.

“Whether you were a judge, steward, test sheet runner, scorer or a scriber. Without you, championships wouldn’t take place. I’d also like to thank BD for giving Rockrose the opportunity to run these championships over the years too,” he said.

“This doesn’t mean dressage at Rockrose is over. There will be a revised programme and there will be dressage here every month going forward, with a variation of affiliated and non-affiliated days.”

Mr Cunningham said once dates are finalised these will be updated on the Rockrose Facebook page.

‘There’s so much the public can take from the sport’: calls to raise the profile of para dressage

Could more be done to raise the profile of para dressage – and boost spectators?

Britain has been at the forefront in para dressage, winning medals on the world stage, but closer to home Paralympic and European medal-winning rider Mari Durward-Akhurst believes there is still work to be done on increasing awareness of the discipline as an elite sport.

Mari has made it her goal this year to increase the visibility of her sport and has been using her social media to encourage conversations.

“When I do public speaking many people still say they haven’t heard of para dressage or don’t know anything about it, including some horsey people,” Mari told H&H.

“It’s such a fantastic sport, but it’s not talked about that much alongside dressage and I think it should be spoken about as the elite sport it is.”

Mari would like to see more spectators at para dressage competitions.

“Some people can think para sport is a bit boring, like watching a grade one walk test, but if people came they would realise it’s not boring,” she said.

“When we competed at the Europeans in Rotterdam in 2019, the showjumping and dressage were on at the same time so we had massive crowds. People learned about para dressage and said they wanted to watch it again.”

Mari added that other benefits of raising the sport’s profile would be giving horses more experience of crowds before championships – and helping find new sponsors and owners, which has been an ongoing concern for para riders. But she acknowledged the sport is facing challenges, such as organisers’ concerns about rising costs and low entries, making it difficult for shows to be viable.

“We don’t always have the numbers; I went to a qualifier recently and I was the only grade one – so the organisers will think, ‘Why run para classes?’” said Mari.

“If we get more spectators, hopefully organisers might host us at bigger events, or be more open to para displays.”

Paralympic medallist Sophie Wells agreed, telling H&H: “There’s so much the general public can take from the sport – but it’s having the platform to do it and get people interested.

“We want to get the sport out there, we’ve got people that have amazing and inspiring stories and can be role models,” she added.

“If no one’s watching, you don’t get into that public space and then the younger generation or people at home who maybe have a disability and don’t think anything is possible don’t see what can be achieved and what some of our riders overcome.”

Last year Olympic dressage rider Spencer Wilton became technical advisor to the British para dressage team and attended the Europeans in Ermelo.

“For me personally, getting to know the riders and understanding not only their abilities and disabilities but some of their day to day challenges has been extraordinary,” Spencer told H&H. “Very few people really see and understand what goes on behind the scenes.

“I think in para dressage we’re maybe lacking riders’ stories – people know all about the Whitakers or Laura Collett for example. People love to get to know riders, they become personalities and characters, and I think this could be a good way to get more people interested.”

Hartpury hosts some para fixtures alongside able-bodied competitions, and event organiser Kathryn Cadoux-Hudson told H&H spectators can be a challenge across the board, especially with people using live streaming.

“I agree raising the profile of riders could help, and maybe more could be done to explain what the different grades mean as that is maybe difficult for the general public to understand. Having more awareness and understanding could help with interest,” she said.

British Dressage (BD) communications manager Camille Peters told H&H that BD is “deeply committed” to raising para sport’s profile.

“It is very much part of our identity, and we are immensely proud of the achievements of our athletes over the last 30 years since para dressage was introduced to the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics,” she said.

“At national level, with the exception of the National Championships, all of our major para fixtures are free to attend and are promoted through the BD newsletter and live shows system — we would welcome even more spectators to come along and support our riders and venues.”

Ms Peters added that when para and non-disabled classes run alongside each other, they have the same amount of digital coverage from BD – and para is a “key part” of BD’s magazine.

“We provide extensive live coverage on our website and social media during major championships, where senior, para and youth teams are treated equally. This parity will be seen in action at this year’s World Championships in Aachen, where both teams will receive the same level of service and support,” she said.

“While we acknowledge there is always more that can be done, especially at grassroots level, we continue to promote opportunities that strengthen the links between para and non-disabled sport – and dressage remains one of the most accessible disciplines for riders of all ages and abilities.

“In recent years we have also expanded our competition pathways to support those with non-visible disabilities through our partnership with Virtus and SportExcel, underlining our commitment to equality and diversity by providing dressage opportunities for all.”

Richard Davison calls for extra steps to ensure riders suspended for horse abuse change their training methods

Four-time dressage Olympian Richard Davison, who holds a master’s degree in law and advises sports lawyers on equestrian matters, believes introducing mandatory rehabilitation protocols within equestrian disciplinary sanctions could help offending riders change and improve the reputation of the sport

For some, the London International Horse Show might seem like a distant memory. But the performance of Lottie Fry and Glamourdale was outstanding and will stay with me for some time. All five of our British riders did us proud. It was great to welcome German-based Susan Pape back onto home ground and to enjoy Sadie Smith’s London debut.

Following the completion of her suspension, Charlotte Dujardin’s return to competition was fully justified. The principles of natural justice dictate that once a disciplinary sanction has been served, the matter is concluded, and British Dressage’s (BD) CDI selection policy rightly reflects this. Despite that, public interest in Charlotte remained high.

It was therefore a relief for many to hear welcoming cheers from at least a large part of the grandstand as she entered the arena. Under such scrutiny, her grand prix performance was a masterclass in focus and technical riding.

The two-day dressage package went down well and included educational and entertaining events scheduled between the two FEI classes. I hosted a thought-provoking “Dressage in the spotlight” session, bringing together visitors, representatives from the FEI and BD, riders and other professionals to openly discuss some of the key issues currently facing the sport.

Constructive sanctions

The issue of abusive training techniques arose. The discussion focused on a proposal for sanctions to include mandatory rehabilitation as a structured route back into the sport.

Rather than being punitive, the aim would be to provide psychological and educational support, alongside professional evaluation, to ensure that individuals take ownership of their actions and reform their training methods.

Iain Graham, CEO of British Showjumping, explained how they already provide this, and I have received a copy of the Danish federation’s equivalent protocol. Not all offending riders can face up to their actions. Instead, they target their frustration at those who reported them or the governing bodies that had to impose the sanctions.

Using Charlotte’s violations as a case study, I don’t think anyone could blame her if she were to feel as though she had been thrown under the bus by the person reporting her. I think she was. Why would anyone wait four years before reporting a welfare case if they cared about horse abuse?

On that basis, some understandably felt that the complainant’s actions were intended to harm Charlotte’s professional reputation.

But that is irrelevant and not the issue that incenses many onlookers. They remain shocked by the video depicting an Olympic champion, who previously promoted equine welfare, excessively whipping a horse while training it. On those grounds, they feel deceived.

The interests and wellbeing of horses must always be foremost, but surely the nature of these offences indicates that perpetrators are fundamentally misguided and in need of educational assistance and redirection where out-dated practices are entrenched. Most riders would struggle to rehabilitate without support, particularly under public scrutiny.

Relying on statements published in connection with disciplinary proceedings won’t cut it with the public. Nor will simply returning to the winner’s enclosure.

Remaining silent is also ineffective as it creates a void. This can too easily be filled with an assumption that the only reforms that have been made are those that ensure the perpetrator won’t get caught again.

This assumption may not be accurate, but in the absence of transparency, it’s difficult to counter.

Restoring trust

There are no guarantees when it comes to restoring lost integrity. The public tends to view cases involving animal mistreatment differently from other wrongdoings.

However, there is one common requirement if trust is to be restored: that all endeavours towards rehabilitation and reform have been exhausted.

Petitions against the use of horses in sport show no sign of easing. At present, BD and the FEI don’t include mandatory rehabilitation protocols within their disciplinary sanctions, but such measures could support both the rehabilitation of offending riders and the reputation of the sport.

For everyone’s sake, these protocols should be implemented as a matter of urgency.

‘Their legacy will shape British dressage for decades’: equestrian world remembers Valegro and Uthopia

The equestrian community is remembering Valegro and Uthopia – the much-loved dressage powerhouses who gained fans worldwide.

Following the announcement on 1 December of their passing, there has been an outpouring of love as people shared happy memories of what made them so special.

Valegro’s co-owner Rowena Luard said she was “smitten” at first sight.

“My first glimpse of Valegro was at one of his early young horse shows. I was smitten. Carl asked me if I might like to be part of Valegro’s future and it was the easiest decision of my life,” she told H&H.

“He was a small horse but had such presence. I loved his beautiful, elegant face and kind eye. It was when we started doing the shows with him that you saw our little boy transform into this elegant powerhouse. It was definitely the crowd that elevated him. He just loved to perform.”

Rowena said watching Valegro break records was “such a privilege, but almost just as satisfying was the effect he had on everyone. He was such a gentleman. So kind, so patient. He was a true equine rockstar,” she said.

“His journey to global stardom was enabled by a phenomenal team of people from the early days whose hard work and passion really made it all happen. Chef d’equipe Dickie Waygood and Richard Davidson were our heroes, as was Will Connell of British Equestrian. The vets and masseuse who travelled with him everywhere ensured our athlete was in top top shape at all times.

“Haydn Price, the British team farrier, was a huge support and with whom I held hands at most of the competitions as I was so nervous. Alan of course, our supergroom and super personal assistants Claudine and Katie, who handled all of the logistics and mountains of paperwork. Anne Barrott joined the team as another co-owner and we so loved following the global adventures of Team Valegro. It was incredible to witness such a team of consummate professionals working so tirelessly to achieve our dreams.”

A British Dressage spokesperson said Valegro and Uthopia “leave legacies that will shape British dressage for decades to come”.

“Their hoofprints may have faded from the competition arena, but the mark they left on our sport is indelible,” said the spokesperson.

“Though different in personality and way of going, Valegro and Uthopia were united by the principles that brought them to greatness. Together, they brought our sport to new audiences, reshaped the public’s understanding of dressage, inspired a generation and demonstrated that outstanding performance is built on kindness and trust.”

British Dressage chief executive Jason Brautigam said it was “these two legends” that led to him being in his role.

“The incredible performances of Uthopia and Valegro at London 2012 will live long in the memory of all equestrian fans. It was such a special occasion and was transformational for the sport in Great Britain. It was the moment that dressage captured the hearts and minds of the public, and I was no exception,” he said.

“It was an absolute privilege to see Valegro win gold again in Rio. An experience I will personally cherish forever.”

Mr Brautigam added “but most importantly, these two horses redefined dressage”.

“Their beautiful, gentle souls, relaxed temperament, and seemingly effortless ability in the arena heralded a new era. Their wonderful partnerships with Carl and Charlotte showcased the best of our sport,” he said.

“As any visitor to Carl’s yard would agree, spirits were always lifted by the sight of these two companions enjoying their well-earned retirement in the paddock. Now, they are sadly no longer with us, but we should take comfort that they remained inseparable to the end.”

Six-time Badminton winner Lucinda Green was “incredibly spoiled” to have a lesson on Valegro.

“I set across the diagonal in medium trot and I could hardly sit there – it was such power,” she told H&H. “He was an absolute sweetheart to ride, he was such a lovely person.”

Lucinda remembers Valegro’s London 2012 freestyle, where he and Charlotte scored 90.09% for individual gold.

“The music along with Big Ben was the most striking thing. Valegro held his own and it was wonderful.”

Lucinda said what Carl and Uthopia and Charlotte and Valegro achieved was “phenomenal”.

“The pair of them, they were just iconic. And I think it’s lovely that they’ve both gone off to fly with the angels together.”

Voice aids allowed in dressage in ‘a positive step’ for the sport

Moves to allow voice aids in dressage competition, made after rider feedback, have been welcomed as a positive step by competitors.

From January, British Dressage (BD) and British Riding Clubs (BRC) will allow “discreet” use of vocal aids, including tongue clicking, during tests. BRC has also ruled that nosebands will no longer be compulsory in dressage.

“Throughout all BRC competitive opportunities, we always strive to make sure the best practices are followed to support everyone involved,” head of BRC Rachael Hollely-Thompson told H&H. “The welfare and safety of both the horse and rider is always the most important thing for us to consider and for that reason, we regularly review the rules we have in place.

“Going forward, riders can now use discreet vocal aids in their dressage tests to support their natural riding aids, such as tongue clicking. However, the use of the voice must remain unobtrusive and must not cause distraction or interference to other riders, horses and officials.”

Ms Hollely-Thompson said BRC has already had “very positive” feedback to the new rule.

“Comments include: ‘This is great news as my horse is used to hearing my voice when we’re riding and finds it reassuring,’” she said.

“In addition to this, the revised BRC handbook states that the requirement of nosebands will no longer be compulsory in dressage. We believe both revisions will play a key role in supporting all those involved in BRC events and activities, and look forward to rolling them out.”

BD CEO Jason Brautigam told H&H that after BD outlined its equine welfare action plan in 2024, members got in touch with “constructive suggestions about how we could potentially improve our sport, in terms of the rules and regulations”.

“One of these ideas was to allow the use of the voice as an aid, in particular to support the progression of young and inexperienced horses,” he said. “This was discussed by the board and our technical committees, with unanimous support for this rule change.

“Providing use of the voice is discreet and unobtrusive, and does not disturb riders in adjacent arenas, we all agreed that this would be a positive move.”

All regular competition

Mr Brautigam said the rule applies to all regular competition, including young horse and pony classes, but not at championship level; regionals, Area Festivals, winter, national, Quest, combined training and associated championships and Quest semi-finals. BD is to communicate details to members, and the rules will be published on 1 December.

The voice has long been considered one of the “natural aids” in riding, with the legs, seat and hands, as an auxiliary aid to reinforce other cues.

Olympic dressage rider and trainer Richard Davison told H&H the change is a positive one.

“It’s a really good thing from a horse learning angle,” he said. “Everybody knows the voice is, mostly, an acceptable way to influence the horse – and we’ve all used a ‘whoa’ or a click in the arena for years, but careful not to where the judge could overhear!”

Richard pointed out that this “levels the playing field”, as although judges “huddled in a box” at a wet, windy outdoor show might not have heard voice aids, those indoors would be more likely to.

“From an ethical training point of view, it’s a step in the right direction,” he added. “Of course, as with any aid, if it’s used constantly it’ll be less effective so it should be a measured tool but it’s a good thing.”

Can dressage win back its spectators? The struggle to keep fans engaged with the sport

Is dressage facing a crisis? Aside from welfare concerns, falling spectator numbers, shifting competitor habits, and rising organisational costs have forced several shows to close their gates. And it’s not just a British problem – international fixtures, such as Compiègne CDIO, are dropping off the calendar for 2026.

Participation is also shrinking. British Dressage (BD) membership has fallen 2.1% since January, and attendance at flagship events like the LeMieux National Championships has dipped too – prompting Pammy Hutton to lament its “lacklustre atmosphere” in her latest H&H column.

The challenge is working out what’s to blame – how competitions are run, or the squeeze of the cost-of-living crisis – and how dressage can reconnect with fans.

Rising overheads are making events harder to sustain

Online, two of the main complaints about the recent nationals were ticket prices – £30 for a day ticket, the same as in 2024, with student discounts and free entry for under-15s – and the limited number of trade stands. But BD chief executive Jason Brautigam says these issues reflect wider post-pandemic pressures across sport and culture.

“Since we moved from Stoneleigh in 2019, inflation alone has gone up by 29.2%, but we have seen our overheads increase by a much greater amount,” he explains. “The cost of hiring temporary grandstands alone has gone up by 300% in just six years.

“It is very expensive to bring in infrastructure onto a greenfield site without permanent facilities, from marquee and stable hire to generators and toilets.

“As a result, the event is now heavily subsidised. We do try to keep the cost of tickets to a minimum to maintain attendance, but we have to finance these facilities for spectators and competitors alike.”

In 2024, the nationals were reported to be running at an average annual loss of around £30,000 – a figure that highlights the uphill battle faced by privately funded or less-subsidised fixtures.

“In an ideal world, we would love to have more trade stands,” Mr Brautigam adds. “But again, the commercial reality is that the nature of the market has changed; there are fewer equestrian retailers now compared to pre-pandemic, and the business model has now changed to one where businesses sell to consumers direct online, rather than by attending events.”

He also pointed to changing spectator habits, with so much equestrian sport now available to watch live or on demand online. Even so, he doesn’t see this as a sign that dressage itself is losing appeal – membership has risen 30% since June 2020, despite a small dip this year, and flagship events like the London International Horse Show continue to draw strong crowds.

But with little prospect of major financial change in the near future, the question is what the sport can do in the meantime to give spectators and competitors better value – and re-ignite their enthusiasm for dressage.

“Freestyle is the one real growth area”

From an entertainment perspective, one of the most transformative innovations in modern dressage has been the freestyle. Originating in the 1980s and introduced to the Olympics at Atlanta in 1996, it was first met with some scepticism – but it’s now the sport’s biggest crowd-puller.

The FEI World Cup series, among the best-attended dressage events on the circuit, centres its competition around the freestyle, with the grand prix serving as a low-stakes qualifier.

Online, the discipline’s most-watched moments are all freestyle tests: Lottie Fry and Glamourdale’s 2022 World Championship-winning ride has more than 2.2 million views on YouTube; Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro’s 2015 world record freestyle from Olympia has 4.7 million (see below); Edward Gal and Totilas’ Windsor test tops 6 million across uploads; and Andreas Helgstrand’s 2006 WEG performance with Blue Hors Matinee has nearly 30 million views.

Freestyle may be the most crowd-pleasing part of dressage, but organisers at the national level are struggling to keep up. Kelly Jewell, who co-runs the freestyle producers Equidance, says many British venues are still relying on CDs to play riders’ music – something she calls “ridiculous, frankly, because it’s unreliable”.

“I’ve been to so many competitions where the CD player won’t work, or the disc skips or is scratched – and most people don’t even have a way to check their CDs play anymore,” she explains. “Everywhere else it’s MP3. The only country that still wants CDs is ours.”

She believes the issue isn’t cost but communication.

“Most systems can plug and play with MP3s or run from a laptop,” she says. “It’s not expensive – we even offer help for free – but there’s a lack of education and no one driving it.”

As part of BD’s designated funds initiative, which reinvests reserves to support the development of the sport in key areas, money is set aside for music system upgrades at venues – suggesting the funding and appetite for progress are there, but perhaps what’s needed now is clearer direction.

“Freestyle is the one real growth area of dressage,” Kelly adds. “Premier Leagues are down, High Profile shows are down, but freestyle is booming. It’s the part of the sport they should be investing in.”

What gymnastics can teach us about the future of dressage

Beyond simply adding more freestyle classes, dressage could take inspiration from other sports in finding new ways to captivate spectators – tapping into the same energy that made those viral freestyles so memorable.

One striking example comes from the NCAA women’s gymnastics scene in the US, where artistic floor routines have evolved from purely technical exercises into more of a performance art. That shift transformed the sport’s popularity, making it more entertaining and relatable, with athletes such as Katelyn Ohashi and Margzetta Frazier drawing tens – even hundreds – of millions of views online.

In the 1980s and 90s, NCAA gymnastics faced a similar challenge to dressage today: routines were technically brilliant but often inaccessible to more casual audiences. Over time, the rules shifted focus away from pure technical difficulty, reducing compulsory elements and rewarding creativity, expression and storytelling, encouraging gymnasts to connect with spectators rather than simply impress judges. The result was a new generation of routines set to pop, hip-hop and movie soundtracks – performances that felt athletic but also personal.

Crucially, although it differs from the floor routines you see in the Olympics, the sport didn’t lose its integrity. Difficulty scores still matter, but they now sit alongside artistry and presentation. That balance has helped gymnastics bridge the gap between sport and entertainment – something dressage, with its musical foundations, is arguably as well placed to emulate.

By contrast, dressage freestyles are weighted 50/50 between technical execution and artistic impression, with 200 marks available for each. But when you consider that collective marks for rhythm, energy, elasticity, and harmony between horse and rider all sit within the artistic category, the real balance is closer to 70/30 in favour of technicality.

Shifting that balance – placing greater emphasis on musical interpretation and choreography, and relaxing restrictions on compulsory movements, perhaps even reducing the length of tests – could encourage riders to take more creative risks and produce freestyles that connect more powerfully with audiences. That kind of innovation fits the moment too, where TikTok and trending audios shape how people engage with the world.

How grassroots organisers are reimagining the future of dressage competition

Additionally, demos have long shown their pulling power – BD’s own national conventions were always well attended – so combining them with competitions could help bring more people through the gates. Grassroots organisers are already proving how effective that approach can be.

At the unaffiliated Aintree Cooke Coachbuilders Carnival of Dressage, organiser Katie Amos has built an event that blends competition, community and entertainment – and it’s paying off.

“I run a training camp beforehand so people can come for two and a half days, train in the competition arenas, and then stay for the show,” she says. “It encourages them to stable overnight and creates more of a community feel on the showground.”

The gala-night demo in 2025 sold out 265 tickets, and featured how-to advice on freestyles from Equidance, and top riders like the then national champion Lewis Robertson-Carrier and Becky Moody, who rode Jagerbomb.

“We didn’t even announce what horse Becky was bringing, and it still sold out,” Katie adds.

With lead-rein classes, family-friendly awards, and a focus on fun, her formula shows that creating experiences around the sport – not just within it – can help keep both riders and spectators coming back.

By comparison, demonstrations at the nationals are typically short – often around 30 minutes between classes – which makes them harder to build into the wider spectator experience.

The future of dressage depends on connection – not just competition

British Dressage already does many things well, from supporting grassroots riders to keeping longstanding traditions like Radio Nationals alive, and much of what’s discussed here is simply a snapshot of ideas rather than an exhaustive list.

There’s still plenty more that could be explored without dramatically increasing overheads – from leaning into spectator interest in young horse classes and promoting the sport’s personalities, to adding post-test commentary from judges, improving live coverage, relaxing traditional dress codes, and allowing non-rights holders to share content from FEI-named events.

But there remains a clear need for the sport to evolve. The challenges facing dressage are complex, even before considering issues such as welfare and social licence – and there’s a lot to be said about NCAA gymnastics’ new appeal being down to its celebrating the “happy athlete” – yet every small improvement in presentation, participation, or perception can make a difference.

427 eliminations, 84 welfare-related: British Dressage reveals first welfare statistics and outlines next steps for change

British Dressage (BD) has released its first set of figures under its equine welfare action plan, fulfilling a commitment made at the 2024 AGM to increase transparency around horse welfare in dressage competitions.

Although the FEI publishes a public list of yellow cards naming the riders and events involved, BD has opted instead to share annual summary data. The figures, presented at this year’s AGM, cover all welfare-related cases, which are handled confidentially.

BD does not currently maintain a public register of suspensions, even though at the 2024 AGM, the organisation said it was exploring a formal yellow-card warning system of its own for minor offences.

In total, 427 eliminations were recorded for the year to date, 84 of which (19.7%) were welfare-related. Of these, 57 were owing to soundness issues, 15 to blood, and 12 recorded under “other” unspecified reasons.

As a proportion of all starters, welfare-related eliminations accounted for 0.14% of tests. A total of 150 welfare reports were submitted to BD head office during the same period.

BD confirmed that 14 cautions or formal warnings were issued regarding future conduct. Eight cases were referred to the BD equine welfare advisory panel, of which four were upheld.

Five cases were referred to the disciplinary panel – two have been upheld and three remain ongoing. Two individuals are currently suspended pending further disciplinary review.

British Dressage horse welfare threshold framework

To support welfare reporting and disciplinary procedures, British Dressage has developed an equine welfare threshold framework, which categorises cases into four levels:

Minor or isolated incidents: such as unintentional misuse of whips or spurs, or overly tight nosebands.
Repeated minor incidents: multiple reports of tack or equipment misuse, or repeated soundness concerns.
Single but more serious breaches: including excessive force during competition or training.
Severe abuse or neglect: such as intentional harm, violence or deprivation of water or care.

Each level carries a corresponding response:

Minor incidents may result in a verbal reminder from officials on the day, a written caution from the CEO, education on best practice and monitoring for recurrence.
Repeated minor incidents can lead to a formal written warning and additional conditions, such as veterinary approval before competing.
Serious single breaches trigger a formal investigation and referral to BD’s internal welfare and disciplinary panel, with potential involvement of World Horse Welfare or the RSPCA.
Severe abuse or neglect results in immediate referral to the RSPCA, police, World Horse Welfare or local authorities for investigation, BD monitoring progress and imposing suspension where appropriate.

Welfare and rule development

The FEI’s new noseband measuring device will be introduced at national level from 2026, following a successful trial at the national championships, where stewards checked horses before they entered the warm-up arena.

“It’s going to be vitally important that we develop the sport itself, rewarding harmony over tension and submission as well,” said BD chief executive Jason Brautigam. “Ultimately, riders will train their horses to achieve the scores that are rewarded by judges. So we need to start at this endpoint [the judges], and work backwards.

“This will require a review of the rules governing the sport itself to encourage best practice, including the content of our tests and the marking schemes, which will reward a natural way of going.”

Mr Brautigam added that BD will follow the FEI’s lead on upcoming rule revisions. At the FEI General Assembly in Hong Kong (5–7 November), national federations and stakeholders will debate and vote on proposed updates to the 2025 dressage rules – including a suggestion from the International Dressage Officials Club to add new movements at grand prix to assess suppleness and self-carriage, such as a give and retake of the reins.

The FEI dressage technical committee has expressed full agreement with this proposal. Separately, the FEI’s quadrennial rules review for dressage is scheduled for 2026, during which broader and more significant structural changes to the dressage rulebook are expected.

‘Her legacy will live on in the riders she inspired’: farewell to stalwart of British dressage

Jane Kidd, the stalwart of British dressage died on 21 August, aged 82, following a long illness.

Jane’s life was intertwined with horses from her earliest years, and she carried her love of the sport into every avenue. Having twice represented Britain at junior showjumping European Championships, a serious back injury altered her path, but with characteristic resilience she turned to dressage.

What might have been an ending became the beginning of an extraordinary journey of contribution and service to her sport.

She gave her time generously, especially to young riders, encouraging their talent and watching them flourish. From coaching Pony Club teams to leading the under-21 programme, she believed in nurturing not only skill, but confidence and love for the horse. Many of today’s successful riders began their journeys with Jane’s encouragement and wisdom, including eventer Tom McEwen.

Her impact extended beyond the arena. Jane wrote dressage literature, offering insight and inspiration to riders at every level. She edited British Dressage (BD) magazine for 15 years, bringing education to the forefront. It was under her stewardship that the scales of training were introduced to BD, a legacy that continues today.

Jane played a vital role in officiating and governance; she was an FEI and List One judge, the first chair of the BD test committee and later a senior selector. Her thoughtful leadership and understanding of the sport helped shape the success of British teams on the international stage. Her immense knowledge was shared with fairness and integrity, qualities that made her widely respected.

It could be said that Jane was ahead of her time. In 1974, she turned her attention to technology and recommended that breeding, progeny and performance should be fed into computers to help future breeders produce the best youngstock. Her idea was supported by Sir Harry Llewellyn, then president of the British Equestrian Federation, who helped her progress with breeders, owners and technology.

In recognition of her service, Jane was awarded the BD Linda Whetstone Memorial Trophy in 2024, a fitting acknowledgement of a lifetime of dedication.

Before her illness, Jane enjoyed her garden, cooking and walking with her friends, dogs and god-daughter Laura. She spent her later years living with her brother Johnny Kidd in Fairford, Gloucestershire, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Jane Kidd gave so much to dressage and her legacy will live on in the riders she inspired, the principles she championed and the countless lives she touched. She will be remembered not only for her extraordinary achievements but for her warmth, humour and generosity of spirit.

BD will miss Jane deeply, but her contribution will never be forgotten.

Farewell to Olympic rider, mentor and true horsewoman, aged 90

Tricia Gardiner, the pioneer, mentor and true horsewoman died on 20 August, aged 90.

Born in 1935, Tricia’s early life was shaped by wartime Britain before she built her home and family in Herefordshire with her husband Patrick. Alongside raising three daughters, she immersed herself in the equestrian world – from managing the family’s thoroughbred stud and farm to giving her time to the Pony Club and local hunting community. Horses were at the heart of her life from the very beginning.

Tricia first made her mark in eventing, with Welton Gameful. Her career was interrupted by a serious accident in which she broke both legs, but she found a new beginning. Dressage became her passion, and she became a central figure in the development of the sport in Britain.

She worked closely with friend and mentor Lorna Johnstone. Her determination took her to the international stage, memorably with her beloved Manifesto, a Welsh cob/thoroughbred whom Tricia took over from her husband. They became a formidable partnership, under the tutelage of Robert Hall at Fulmer, and competed at European shows including Aachen.

An international career of 13 years followed before her proudest moment – selection for the 1988 Seoul Olympics with Wily Imp. The team of Tricia, Jennie Loriston-Clarke, Diana Mason and Barbara Hammond secured a top-10 finish.

For decades, Tricia combined competing with training and mentoring. She produced many horses up to advanced and was a source of inspiration for riders across disciplines, including eventers Mark Todd and Blyth Tait. In later years, she enjoyed a special connection with Carl Hester, who supported her with her final grand prix horse, Moon Tiger.

Tricia was a highly regarded List One judge, known for her fairness and understanding. Her influence extended far beyond individual competitions, leaving a lasting impression on the judging standards of her era.

Former BD List Two judge Tessa Thorne worked for Tricia from 1984 to 1994 and learnt “a huge amount about training and producing horses”.

“Trish was absolutely insistent on the fundamentals being truly established and was especially particular about the quality of contact with the horse’s mouth – she hated seeing horses with an inconsistent connection and insisted that we all sit in a correct, soft and elastic position. She was very insistent that the rider should not disturb the horse, especially in flying changes,” said Tessa.

“She shaped me as a rider and trainer and hopefully I’ve been paying that forward ever since.”

BD chairman Jill Day added: “I reflect our entire community’s sentiment in sharing our sadness at the passing of a remarkable individual.

“Trish’s tireless dedication to the sport never wavered until the day she died. She was an amazing trainer, rider and judge who I was lucky to see in action on many occasions. I extend my personal, heartfelt condolences to Trish’s family and loved ones.”

‘We can’t run at a loss’: top venue calls time on dressage shows but will continue to host the nationals

Somerford Park Farm will no longer host British Dressage (BD) premier league or high profile competitions owing to viability concerns – but will continue to host the LeMieux National Dressage Championships.

Somerford, which is one of seven venues on the 2025 high profile and premier league calendar and held its fixtures in May, announced this week, “with regret”, that it would not hold the shows in future. This leaves the nationals as the venue’s only competition.

“This difficult decision has been made in response to evolving competition trends and financial challenges affecting the viability of competitions in the horse world,” said a spokesperson for the Cheshire venue.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to all sponsors, especially Baileys Horse Feeds and Bliss of London Saddlemakers, competitors, supporters, judges, and volunteers for your dedication and support over the years. Your involvement has been vital to the success of the event.”

Organiser Millie Heffernan told H&H that entries at the May premier league and high profile fixtures were “the lowest they’ve ever been” and the shows ran at a “major loss”.

“Hence, it’s not sustainable. We run it as a business, we can’t run at a loss and things have to be reviewed and stopped if they’re not going to pay their way,” she said.

“Everyone’s expenses have risen, and sadly things have to come to an end when they don’t stack up.”

Millie believes that people are competing and travelling less on the whole.

“Given the financial situation of the whole country, people are more conscious of what they’re spending their money on. People who used to compete fortnightly are perhaps competing monthly,” she said.

“And sadly I think the BD calendar is quite overpopulated, there’s a lot of shows for people to go to so it’s spread a bit thin.”

Millie added that the situation around the viability of shows “is concerning” for the sport.

“I don’t think it’s specific to one discipline. The level of interest has maybe dropped in competitions; people can access so much online nowadays they don’t need to go and watch it in the flesh. We’re still busy as a training venue and people are still doing the fun side of it, but I think people have got different priorities and commitments,” she said.

“We see it from both sides; it needs to be the price it is as a venue but obviously as a competitor it feels expensive as well. It’s a real fine line, the support of good quality judges and the standard of everything that competitors expect from facilities, judges and surfaces, you have to charge a price for.

“And we want to invite sponsors in and we have good long-standing sponsors, but they need to feel like they’re getting something back and being supported by competitors, otherwise we’ll lose them.”

Millie confirmed that Somerford will continue to host the BD national championships – taking place this year from 11-14 September.

“There are no plans for that to change,” she said.

‘Exciting foursome’ named as Britain aims to defend team title at European Dressage Championships

The terrific trio that delivered an Olympic bronze medal last summer have been named on the British team for the European Dressage Championships – as a newcomer gets ready to make his first full senior championship appearance.

Today (31 July) British Equestrian (BEF) and British Dressage (BD) confirmed the four combinations that will be Britain’s definite entries for the European Dressage Championships, taking place in Crozet, France, from 26 to 31 August.

Last summer’s team of Carl Hester, Becky Moody and Lottie Fry have returned following their success in Paris, where Lottie also won an individual bronze – and they are joined by Andrew Gould, who was travelling reserve at Versailles.

The team chef d’equipe Darrell Scaife said “what an exciting foursome to be taking to France”.

“Carl will be riding in his ninth consecutive Europeans, Lottie has been a team regular since 2019, while for Andrew and Becky, it’s their Euros debut. But all four have considerable experience and with Lottie and Becky featuring the world’s top four and a number of personal best performances from the group this spring, we carry great form to the championships,” he said.

“The horses and riders have one of the best support teams behind them – both at home and via the World Class Programme and I’m looking forward to working with each and every one as we prepare for Crozet and look to successfully defend our team title.”

A BEF spokesperson added that the funding the British Equestrian World Class Programme receives from the National Lottery and UK Sport is “pivotal in preparing our teams for senior championships and supporting them on the ground”.

Horse world celebrates our sense of community during Mental Health Awareness Week

The equestrian world has been praised as somewhere that can offer a safe space for riders struggling with mental health.

The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May) is community, and UK charity the Mental Health Foundation said being a part of a safe, positive community is “vital for our mental health and wellbeing”.

“We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times and give us a sense of purpose,” said a spokesperson for the foundation.

Katie Turner, yard manager of Brookhouse Farm Riding School in the West Midlands, told H&H riding schools can provide a “safe space” for adults and children to be themselves.

“After Covid, a lot of people were struggling and we found that they would come here and talk to us because it is their happy place, there’s no stress here. They get to be with the animals they love and talk to people they get along with,” she said, adding that a group of teenagers at the yard has taken part in a new “ice bucket challenge”, the #SpeakYourMIND campaign, launched by the University of South Carolina’s Mental Illness Needs Discussion club.

“We’ve seen a change in young people over the years, too,” she said. “More are struggling with their mental health, but when they come here they can be children again. We’re an outlet from the pressures of school and social media. When they come to the riding school, they don’t need to look a certain way – they’re with their friends and their favourite ponies, and you hear them laughing and joking and enjoying each other’s company.”

British Dressage (BD) is supporting Mental Health Awareness Week and has been running Be Kind Month (16 April–18 May), to encourage members to “be there for one another, win, lose or draw”.

“Mental health is inextricably linked to kindness, so this topic has been prominent throughout the Be Kind Month campaign,” BD chief executive Jason Brautigam told H&H.

“Throughout Mental Health Awareness Week, we will be sharing information to provide advice on dealing with the stresses, pressures and anxieties of everyday life, alongside caring for and competing horses.”

BD is supporting the Mental Health Foundation’s Wear it Green Day on 15 May, an initiative to raise funds and awareness for the charity.

“Mental health is high on our agenda, not just throughout Be Kind Month, but all year round. Riders are encouraged to access the BD learning hub, where we’ve launched a mental health module, produced in collaboration with Riders Minds,” said Mr Brautigam.

“We will be adding further development and learning content over coming months, as well as continuing to spread the message about how small acts of kindness can have a massive impact on mental health.”

In a new Riders Minds survey, the charity reported that 93.3% of 210 respondents have experienced kindness in the equestrian community, and 66.5% have felt positively supported. But “more concerningly”, 80.5% have experienced poor mental health in the last three years and only 35.4% sought professional support for this.

“Seeing that people do feel positively supported, and the high levels of kindness experienced within the equestrian community, is super-encouraging given we often anecdotally hear how challenging the industry and its community can be,” said Riders Minds mental health consultant Sylvia Bruce.

“However, those results for people experiencing poor mental health are high, exceeding the commonly cited one-in-four statistic. While that’s worrying, what’s intriguing is that only a minority of those sought professional support and that warrants further exploration.”

‘I’m not giving up or giving in’: rider aims for national championships as she nears 85th birthday

A rider who is aiming for the British Dressage (BD) national championships this year, mucks out every day, drives to shows and is always hoping to improve said she is not giving up – as she approaches her 85th birthday this summer.

Judy Nolan has been riding for 80 years, switching from showing to dressage along the way. She and her cob Furlongs Black Jack (Bazel) have won at elementary level but stepped down the levels after Judy caught Covid.

“I’ve been out a couple of times [this year] at prelim, and we just need one more sheet to qualify for the Area Festivals, and then I intend to move up,” she told H&H. “I don’t know why people think it’s odd someone of nearly 85 is doing what I’m doing!”

Judy said she got “hooked on ponies” aged about four, when she was put on a Shetland.

“I’ve ridden all my life,” she said. “I spent most of my time showing, for my children too, then when they gave up, I carried on. I produced hacks and riding horses, then when I was about 65, I gave up showing and got hooked on dressage. I think I’ve been a member of BD since the 1970s.”

Judy said it was not necessarily the sport itself that first drew her in.

“I liked the fact that you knew your time and you weren’t hanging around!” she said. “But I also liked the fact you didn’t necessarily, years ago anyway, have to have a special horse; it was all down to training and production.

“I’ve had my present cob for 12 years; I bought him because, prior to him, I bought myself a little warmblood who had to be put to sleep at the age of six. I was determined to buy something I thought would be suitable for my old age, and for some unknown reason, I fell for Bazel, who’s a Welsh section D/gypsy cob. I don’t know to this day why I fell for him, because I’ve never had hair in my life!”

Judy said she then found out that Bazel is “very sharp and strong”, but the two of them have had huge success; winning multiple elementary classes, and “holding our own against all the warmbloods”.

Then Judy caught Covid, which meant she struggled with shortness of breath, and had to step down. But she is working her way back up, and has been training with Pammy Hutton.

“I have to pick my tests,” she said. “For example, novice 23 is easier for me, because you trot and canter on one rein, and then you do your walk, and I get my breath back, and then do the trot and canter on the other rein. If it’s got loads and loads of cantering, at the moment, I can’t manage it, but hopefully we’ll get a lot fitter, and then I will be able to.

“I felt a bit ashamed, dropping back to prelim, but if it means I can go out and compete, so be it. And as everyone tells me, there are so many people of my age not doing anything and sitting in nursing homes, so shut up and get on with it!”

Judy said she has always driven the lorry and done everything herself; she and Bazel have their routine and “off we go”.

“I go twice a day; I’ve missed a couple of days when it was so flooded, I couldn’t get there,” she said. “Then I had a cataract operation just before Christmas and wasn’t supposed to go near him for four weeks, but we got some goggles – but I didn’t ride, I was very good!

“He’s a scream; we have a little routine where when we’ve finished training or competing, he has a sloppy feed outside the lorry while I’m getting changed, and while I’m doing that, invariably he puts himself back in the lorry, just climbs up the ramp and gets back in. And I know why: ‘You’re not starting your sandwiches without me’! And he loves cheesy chips; if I’m eating it, it has to be edible for him.”

Judy’s horsey involvement has included the whole spectrum, including breeding racehorses. And asked what it is that keeps her riding, she said: “Goodness knows, I’ve often wished that it was guinea pigs, because it would have been a lot easier! I suppose they’re like a drug, aren’t they? When I was showing, it was always the next championship or final, and I used to buy three-year-olds and bring them on.

“Then I got into dressage and I like the training, and challenge of improving. The money that’s in the sport now is unbelievable so if you’ve got a cob like me it can be a bit disheartening but I’m not giving up, and I’m not giving in.”

Qualification

As well as her prelim Area Festival qualification, Judy is aiming for novice, with the prelim to fall back on.

“If I get the results, I might end up doing the regionals at prelim and the area festival novice, but it will depend,” she said. “We qualify every year for the winters, but never go because, well, I look at the weather in January and think ‘sod it’!

“I don’t know if it was the effect of the Covid or old age but it sort of made me feel I couldn’t be bothered, but I’ve got over it so we’ll get going. I certainly need to keep going, otherwise it would be very easy to stop. I always remember my mother, who died at 97 and carried on driving until she was 92 and got caught for speeding! She always said, if you don’t use it, you lose it.

“I know I’m lucky because I haven’t had anything wrong with me, and I appreciate that some people have health problems – but I don’t do that.

“I put things on Facebook, and let it be known that I’m as old as I am, simply because so many people give up. They just think old and stop doing things.”

Inspiration

Judy’s friend of 20 years Vicky Taylor, who contacted H&H about her, said she is an inspiration.

“She’s very competitive and focused on results and improving, and it just doesn’t occur to her that she’s 84,” she said. “I thought she deserves recognition as there can’t be many people doing that, and I thought it would be nice for her to realise what she’s doing is quite special. She really is amazing.”

BD chief executive Jason Brautigam told H&H BD always says it welcomes riders of all ages, from eight to 80.

“But Judy has smashed this upper limit and it’s wonderful to see that she is still going strong at 84,” he said. “The fact that she’s preparing again to qualify for the Area Festivals and regionals this summer is not only testament to Judy’s redoubtable and indomitable spirit, but she also provides a real inspiration to all BD members, young and old alike.”

The British Dressage (BD) Petplan Area Festivals have become a cornerstone of grassroots dressage, offering thousands of riders the chance to compete in a championship-style setting. With over 6,500 competitors taking part in 2024, it’s the largest affiliated dressage series in the UK – and it continues to grow.

Whether you’re stepping into the arena for the first time or aiming for a place at the prestigious Area Festival Championships, this series offers the perfect balance of ambition, challenge and fun.

What are the Area Festivals?

The Area Festivals provide bronze and silver level riders with a structured and accessible pathway into affiliated competition, offering the excitement of a championship-style event without the pressure of competing against top professionals. A step up from regular BD competitions, each test is judged by three judges instead of one and includes a post-test vet check, ensuring a true championship experience.

With two championship seasons – summer and winter – riders can qualify and compete year-round at venues across the UK, with the chance to progress even further to the prestigious Area Festival Championships.

The Summer Area Festival Championships take place at Arena UK in October, while the Winter Area Festival Championships are hosted at Addington in April – alongside the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships.

Winter season: 1 July – 31 December
Summer season: 1 January – 30 June

The series runs from prelim to inter I levels, with sections for bronze and silver riders, ensuring fair and competitive classes for all.

How do you qualify for Area Festivals and the championships?

Qualification for the Area Festivals is based on a percentage system, meaning you’ll need to achieve a set number of minimum scores within the specific qualification period to secure your place.

You can gain your scores by competing at regular BD affiliated shows. This lets you progress at your own pace while competing in a familiar setting before stepping onto the bigger stage at an Area Festival.

The exact number of scores required depends on the level you are competing at.

✔ Prelim to advanced medium – Three scores of 63% or above

✔ Prix st georges (PSG) and inter I – Two scores of 60% or above

To secure a spot at either championships, you must finish in the top two of your class at an Area Festival. Combinations can enter up to two Area Festivals per season at the same level and section, unless they qualify for the championships on their first attempt.

BUT if you’re not in the top two, a significant number of wildcards are issued each season to the next highest-placed combinations at each level across all the Area Festivals. In 2024, over 130 wildcards were issued across the levels.

Other rules to consider

Riders cannot compete at the same level (including music classes) in both an Area Festival and a regional within the same season. If entering both, the Area Festival level must be at a higher level than the regional.

There are score restrictions for future eligibility:

Combinations who score 68% or higher (70% for music classes) at a regionals can no longer compete at the same or lower level in an Area Festival – both in the current and future seasons
Similarly, combinations scoring 68% or higher (70% for music) at an Area Festival championship cannot enter an Area Festival at the same level and section or below in any future seasons
If a rider has competed at a Premier League, they can’t compete at an Area Festival at that level or below

Love dressage to music?

The summer season features an exciting freestyle to music category, where you can showcase your horse’s rhythm and expression – why not take it to the next level and give designing your own freestyle a go?

To qualify you need to score:

✔ Prelim to advanced medium – Two scores of 63% or above in regular classes

✔ PSG & inter I – Two scores of 60% or above in regular classes

The top two from each class will then move forward to the Summer Area Festival Championships.

Do I need a BD membership?

Yes. To qualify for an Area Festival at prelim bronze level, riders can earn their scores as a BD club member on a club-registered horse. However, if they successfully qualify, both the rider and horse must upgrade to full membership before they can take part in the festival itself.

For those competing at prelim silver and all levels upwards, both the rider and horse must already hold full (competing) membership and a full horse registration in order to gain qualifying scores.

Horse ownership also comes into play. If you own a horse taking part in the Area Festivals, you must be a full (competing) or full (non-competing) member, even if you’re not the one riding.

The British Dressage (BD) LeMieux Quest Championships are a must-do grassroots series, offering a fun, friendly and accessible way to experience affiliated competition.

Quest isn’t just about results – it’s about progress, teamwork, and the joy of the journey. Whether you’re riding your first dressage test or chasing a national title, Quest creates a supportive and inclusive space where effort, improvement and horsemanship matter just as much as winning – exactly how dressage should be: fun, rewarding and open to all.

But how exactly does Quest work, and how can you get involved? Let’s break it down.

What is Quest dressage?

Quest is a relaxed, entry-level dressage series designed to encourage riders of all ages and experience levels to take part. With three levels to choose from and two exciting championships to aim for, it’s the perfect way to enjoy dressage in a fun and welcoming environment.

Team Quest – Compete as part of a team
My Quest – Ride as an individual

You can compete in both if you like! There’s no need for show jackets, and team colours are encouraged – so get creative and have fun!

What levels can I compete at?

Quest competitions run at three levels in both My Quest and Team Quest:

✔ Intro – Walk & trot only, ideal for those starting out

✔ Prelim – Adds canter work, including 20m circles

✔ Novice – More advanced, with lengthened strides & 15m canter circles

It’s a good idea to check the BD handbook beforehand to make sure you’re eligible for the level that you choose to ride at. The tests are also regular BD tests, but Quest only runs the short arena (20×40) versions.

There are also two age categories:

✔ Under 21 – For riders up to the end of the year of their 21st birthday

✔ Open – Available to riders of any age

How does Team Quest work?

Love team spirit and friendly competition? Team Quest is perfect for you!

It’s the perfect way to enjoy dressage alongside friends – whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just starting out.

Each team consists of three or four riders, all competing at their chosen level
The best three scores count towards the team’s total – just like in international team competitions
You can register up to seven riders for your team, with unlimited reserve horses
Each team nominates a captain and selects a region to compete for
Riders can compete for more than one team, but must ride at different levels for each

How do you qualify for the championships?

The Quest season is split into two series:

✔ The LeMieux Quest Series: 1 January – 31 August

✔ The LeMieux Quest Winter League: 1 September – 31 December

The Quest series culminates at the LeMieux Quest National Championships in November, where a total of 32 riders in intro, prelim and novice My Quest classes in the open and under-21 sections, along with 24 Team Quest teams from both categories, will compete for top honours and fantastic prizes.

To qualify, riders and teams accumulate points throughout the season at BD Quest shows. You can compete at as many competitions as you like – but only your best five results count!

The higher the placing, the more points awarded – up to a maximum of 10 for a win.

Team Quest: The top 10 open and under-21 teams at the end of qualifying will battle it out at their chosen semi-final.

My Quest: The top 12 open and under-21 combinations will qualify for their chosen semi-final.

Qualification process:

My Quest: The top three riders from each level in both categories secure a place at the National Championships
Team Quest: Qualification is determined by a ratio system based on final semi-final leaderboard standings
Wildcards: Any remaining championship spots in both My Quest and Team Quest will be allocated to the highest-scoring combinations from the semi-finals

What is the Quest Winter League?

Fancy more competition opportunities? The Quest Winter League (1 Sept–31 Dec) offers extra chances to compete, with a national leaderboard updated fortnightly.

Points are awarded the same way as the Quest Championships, with riders competing at their local BD Quest venues.

Competing in the Winter League does NOT affect your eligibility for the summer Quest Championships.

At the end of the season, the overall top three Team Quest and My Quest combinations will receive a prize, with the top 10 in each level and section awarded a rosette. There is no championship show for the winter league.

Do I need a British Dressage membership for Quest?

Not at all! You don’t need a full BD membership to take part – BD Club membership is all that’s required, making it an accessible and affordable way to dip your toe into affiliated dressage.

For £60 per year, BD Club membership gives you access to all Quest competitions and no upgrades are needed if you qualify for the championships.

With this membership, you can also have a go at qualifying for the Petplan Area Festivals at prelim bronze, try your hand at Red Gorilla Combined Training or dressage to music classes as well as joining regional training sessions.

BD now also offers an exclusive Quest Winter League membership for just £15 – perfect for non-members wanting to compete through the winter!

7 things you wanted to know about affiliated dressage but were too embarrassed to ask

We get it – competing in affiliated dressage for the first time can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re completely new to British Dressage (BD) competitions or you’ve been a BD member for a while but still have a few unanswered questions, we’re here to help break it all down.

From tack rules and test requirements to competition divisions, here are answers to seven of the most common questions riders ask.

1. Do I need to be riding at a certain level before I can compete affiliated?

No, affiliated dressage is open to horses and riders of all levels. BD offers a range of classes designed to provide opportunities for everyone, from grassroots competitors to international riders.

Levels begin with intro, in which only walk and trot are required, and go up to grand prix, the highest level of dressage.
Different tests are available to ride at each level, in either a short arena (20x40m) or a long arena (20x60m).
Each test is numbered for differentiation – the lower-numbered tests at each level are designed to be easier, while the higher-numbered tests are more challenging.

2. Am I allowed to carry a whip in affiliated dressage?

Yes, but only in certain competitions.

✔ Whips ARE allowed at:

Regular BD competitions, qualifiers, Premier Leagues, and High Profile shows
Warm-up classes at championships
Quest
Young horse/pony qualifiers (4, 5, 6, 7yo)

✖ Whips are NOT allowed at:

Area Festivals, regionals, Nationals, and Winter Championships
Associated Championships

Maximum whip length (measured from the top of the handle to the very end):

1.2m for horses
1m for ponies

3. Can I ride in a snaffle at BD shows?

Yes, snaffle bridles are permitted at all BD levels, from intro to grand prix. However, double bridles become optional from elementary level upwards.

Young horse classes have specific rules:

4-, 5-, and 6-year-old classes require a snaffle.
7-year-old classes allow a double bridle.

4. What do bronze, silver and gold mean, and how do I know which I am?

Each British Dressage level (e.g., novice, elementary) is split into three competition sections based on experience:

Bronze – For riders and horses new to the level.
Silver – For combinations gaining experience but not yet established.
Gold – Open to all but designed for experienced riders and horses.

Which section do I compete in?

Your section is determined by points earned at that level by the rider, horse, and combination. The BD Handbook includes detailed checklists to determine eligibility.

At competitions, all riders in the same level ride the test together and are judged under the same criteria. However, for results and qualification purposes, the class is divided into bronze, silver and gold sections to determine placings.

5. Do I have to do sitting trot in a British Dressage test?

Mastering sitting trot is a challenge for all riders. The good news is, in affiliated dressage tests, riders can use rising trot up to elementary level in all trot movements throughout the test.

Up to elementary – Rising trot is allowed in all trot movements.
At medium level – Sitting trot is required, except for medium and extended trot, where rising is allowed.
At advanced medium and above – All trotwork must be in sitting trot.

6. Am I allowed to have a caller at British Dressage shows?

Yes, in most cases. A caller (or commander) is allowed in regular BD classes and qualifiers but not at most championships, including:

National & Winter Championships
Area Festivals & regionals
Associated Championships
Premier League competitions

Callers must also only read the exact words from the test sheet without emphasising commands.

7. What if I forget where I’m going partway through my test?

First of all, don’t panic! It happens to the best of us.

If you go off course, the judge at C will ring their bell (or sound their horn). You will then:

Be told where you went wrong.
Be instructed where to restart from.
Resume your test.

Penalties for errors of course:

1st mistake – Minus 2 points.
2nd mistake – Minus 4 points.
3rd mistake – Elimination.

In some cases, the judge may allow you to introduce a caller mid-test – but this is at their discretion.

You’ve memorised your test, polished your transitions, and your horse is ready to shine – but is your competition outfit up to scratch? Whether it’s your first test or you’re getting back in the saddle, knowing what to wear can be just as important as remembering the test itself. From unaffiliated shows to affiliated competitions, this guide ensures you’re dressed for success.

For unaffiliated competitions, dress codes tend to be more flexible, though some shows adhere closely to British Dressage (BD) standards. If in doubt, check with the organiser beforehand. What to wear for dressage competitions

For any dressage competition, whether affiliated or unaffiliated, the basics remain the same:

riding hat – this should meet safety standards (see our guide to the best riding hats)
riding boots – you can wear either long or short boots and gaiters are optional (see our guide to the best long boots)
breeches – while traditionally these were light in colour, BD rules now allow darker colours too (see our guide to the best competition breeches)

What to wear for affiliated competition

Whether you’re preparing for your first dressage test or competing at an advanced level, wearing the correct attire is essential. BD has specific rules on competition dress, and staying up to date ensures you’re compliant. Here’s everything you need to know about what to wear, based on the BD rulebook for 2025.

Jackets & coats

Intro to advanced medium (FEI Junior tests): Short riding jacket, tweed coat, or uniform with a correctly tied stock, white round collar, or a shirt and tie.
Advanced & opwards: Riders may wear a tailcoat or a short jacket with a protective hat and a correctly tied stock or shirt and tie.
Forces & service personnel: Uniforms may be worn with a protective hat.
Any single-colour tailcoat, jacket or waistcoat is permitted
Subtle pinstripes, coloured collars, contrast piping and discreet crystal accents are allowed
Tweed is permitted but should not have bold patterns
Accents such as collars, cuffs, pinstripes or crystal decorations are permitted, but British team jackets (navy with a red collar and white piping) are reserved solely for British team riders
Waterproofs: Plain or transparent waterproof coats can be used in wet weather
Gilets are not allowed

Shirts

Can be long or short-sleeved in any solid colour
Must fasten at the neck with a correctly tied stock, white round collar, or a tie

Breeches & jodhpurs

Should predominantly be a solid colour – but no longer have to be white
Dark-coloured contrast seats are allowed
Stripes or bold patterns are not allowed

Hat requirements

Must be worn at all times when mounted – whether or not you’re competing – with the harness correctly fastened
Top hats are not permitted
Hats and hat covers may be any conservative colour (fully mirrored hats are not allowed)

Approved hat safety standards:

British: PAS 015 (2011 onwards)
European: VG1 or EN1384:2023
American: SNELL E2016, E2021, ASTM F1163 (2015 onwards)
Australian & New Zealand: AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards)
Hats with a BSI Kitemark or SAI certification are strongly recommended

Gloves

Compulsory in all BD competitions – but can be any colour

Boots

Conventional riding boots (long or short) must be worn
Short riding boots with or without gaiters or half chaps of the same colour are allowed
Fringed or suede gaiters/chaps are not allowed

Body Protectors

Body protectors, air jackets and soft-shell air jackets are all permitted

Spurs

Permitted at all levels, but no longer mandatory from Advanced level upwards
Must be worn as a pair (except for side-saddle classes)
Made of metal (coating permitted)
Rubber, metal, or plastic rotating ball spurs are allowed
Comb spurs are not permitted
The shank must point towards the rear and the end must be horizontal or pointing downwards
Dummy spurs and swan-neck spurs are permitted
Any shank or rowel type is allowed as long as the rowel rotates freely
Rowels must have rounded points
In Children on Horses and FEI Pony classes, only blunt metal spurs are permitted, with a maximum shank length of 3.5cm, measured from the boot to the tip

Cultural, religious or medical dress

Where specific clothing items are worn on cultural, religious or medical grounds that may conflict with the rules above, BD asks members to contact their head office to endorse a suitable solution while still safeguarding the welfare of all participants

Other competition rules

In addition to standard dress requirements, some riders may be required to wear armbands for identification or dispensations. Similarly, whips are subject to specific rules depending on the event.

Whips

Whips are allowed in some competitions but are restricted in others. Here’s when you can and can’t carry a whip:

Whips ARE permitted at:

All qualifiers, including Quest and Quest regionals/championships
Warm-up classes at championships
Young horse/pony (4, 5, 6, 7yo) qualifiers
Young horse/pony (4yo) championships & semi-finals
Premier Leagues and High Profile shows (selectors may request whips are not used)
Ladies riding side-saddle at any level
Para riders (if permitted under their dispensation certificate)

Whips are NOT allowed at:

Championships, including:

Area Festivals, Regionals, Nationals, and Winter Championships
Associated Championships (including Forces Equine)
Combined Training Championship (dressage phase)
Middle Tour Championships
Young horse/pony (5, 6, 7yo) championships & semi-finals
FEI Young Horse Tests

The maximum whip length allowed is 1.2m for horses and 1m for ponies (measured from the top of the handle to the very end).

Armbands & rider dispensations

Certain riders may wear colour-coded armbands to indicate specific needs or permissions:

White armband → Riders with visual impairments
Royal blue armband → Riders with hearing difficulties
Sunflower armband → Riders with hidden disabilities (this does not grant dispensation but raises awareness)
Yellow tabard/armband → Required for support riders assisting grades I to III

Non-classified riders can apply for a dispensation certificate from BD to use compensating aids in non-disabled competitions, including championships.

Sponsorship & logos

Riders may display their sponsor’s name and/or logo on their attire within the following size limits:

Jackets: Max 80cm² on each side at breast pocket height
Shirt collar/stock: Max 16cm² on each side
Manufacturer’s logo: Max 3cm² on any item of clothing

Are you thinking about stepping up to affiliated dressage competitions this season? If so, this guide will take you through everything you need to know about competing under British Dressage (BD) rules – including costs, levels, and what to expect at your first show.

Do I need a flashy warmblood to take part?

Absolutely not! Dressage is a test of training, accuracy, and harmony between horse and rider – not just flashy movement. Horses and ponies of all types and breeds successfully compete in affiliated dressage, from native ponies to ex-racehorses and everything in between.

BD also runs dedicated championships for specific breeds and horse types, giving riders a chance to compete against others on similar horses. At the Cavago Associated Championships held in October there are sections for:

Arab Horse
British Native Pony
Draught Horse
GB PRE (Purebred Spanish Horses)
Lusitano
TGCA (Traditional Gypsy Cobs)
CHAPS (Coloured Horses and Ponies)
Retraining of Racehorses (ROR) and Thoroughbred Championships
Veteran Horse and Rider Championships

So, whether you’re riding a thoroughbred straight off the track or a sturdy native pony, there’s a place for you in affiliated dressage!

How much does it cost to join British Dressage?

The cost of competing in BD events depends on your membership level. Here are the key prices:

Full (Competing) membership – £9.25 per month / £102 annual payment

You’re eligible to compete in any BD event, at any level, with access to a variety of championship pathways. Just remember – a full horse registration is also required!

BD also offers discounted full membership options for riders who compete seasonally or are new to affiliated dressage.

Winter membership is ideal for eventers or those who only compete during the colder months. It provides full rider and horse registration from October to March for £60 each.

Trial membership gives new members a three-month taster of full membership, including access to competitions and member benefits, at a reduced rate of £36 for riders and £16 for horse registration. This option is only available to those who have never been a BD member before.

Full horse registration – £7.50 per month / £85 annual payment

For all new horse registrations, a copy of the horse’s passport must be sent with the application form so the BD office can verify that the horse’s name matches the details on their passport.

Club membership (for grassroots-level competitions) – £60 annual payment

Club membership is the ideal starting point for those new to affiliated dressage, allowing riders to compete in prelim bronze qualifier classes, as well as My Quest and Team Quest events, combined training, and music championship qualifiers.

Club membership costs £40 per year, and there is an additional £20 annual fee for club horse registration. Riders who qualify for higher-level championships, such as the Petplan Area Festivals Championships or the Associated Championships, must upgrade to full membership to compete.

For all memberships, in addition to membership fees, you’ll also need to pay entry fees for each class you enter.

Can I try affiliated dressage without paying for a membership?

Yes! If you want to test the waters before committing, you can compete using class tickets.

Class Tickets cost £10 each
One ticket allows you to enter one affiliated class
Standard entry fees still apply
You and your horse must register as BD community members (free) to use class tickets

With a class ticket, you can win rosettes, prize money, and BD points. You can also use results gained on a ticket towards qualification for the Associated and Combined Training Championships but nothing else.

Why compete in affiliated dressage?

Affiliated competitions offer a higher standard of judging and consistency, ensuring fairness at all levels.

“Our judges go through an accredited training system, so you can be sure of a consistent level of judging,” says a BD spokesperson.

BD also provides clear pathways for riders to progress, from grassroots to top-level dressage. To ensure fair competition, each level is divided into bronze, silver and gold sections, based on the points a horse and rider accumulate at that level.

Bronze: for those new to a level, competing against others of similar experience.
Silver: for more experienced combinations ready to step up.
Gold: for skilled riders or those producing younger horses. Gold riders can stay at each level as long as they choose, allowing flexibility in progression.

So, while you might find yourself warming up next to an Olympian, rest assured – you’ll still be competing on a level playing field with plenty of chances to take home titles and rosettes!

How do the points work?

In affiliated dressage, points are awarded when you compete at prelim level and above and achieve a minimum score of 60%. These points track your progress and determine your eligibility for future competitions. The higher your score, the more points you earn – for example, a score in the low 60s earns fewer points than a score in the 70s or 80s, with a maximum of 11 points awarded for scores of 80% and above.

Points are not awarded in intro classes, music classes, young horse classes, or Team Quest competitions. There is also a separate points system for CDI-level competitors.

Guide to affiliated dressage levels

BD competitions range from intro to grand prix, providing a structured progression for riders and horses.

Intro – Walk and trot only
Prelim – Introduces canter
Novice – Adds lengthened strides in trot and canter
Elementary – Introduces lateral work, counter-canter, and medium trot

Starting out? Try BD Quest!

If you’re new to affiliated dressage, BD Quest is a fun, low-pressure introduction to affiliated dressage.

Competitions are available at intro, prelim, and novice levels and are split into two formats:

My Quest – Individual rider competitions
Team Quest – Team events for groups of three to four riders

To take part, both horse and rider need a BD Club membership. With a focus on progression, team spirit, and enjoyment, BD Quest provides an accessible and supportive entry into affiliated dressage – a fantastic way to develop your skills while making new friends along the way.

Other championship opportunities

Both winter and summer BD seasons conclude with championship events, with qualification opportunities available at all levels.

If you’re progressing from BD Quest, the next step is Area Festivals – a series of championship-style competitions open to riders with:

A minimum of 63% in three prelim to advanced medium tests
A minimum of 60% in two PSG and inter I tests

A top-two finish at an Area Festival (with a qualifying score) moves you on to the Area Festival Championships

These events provide a clear pathway for grassroots riders to progress up the levels while competing in prestigious settings.

Can I still compete in unaffiliated dressage?

Yes! There are no rules preventing you from competing in unaffiliated dressage while holding a BD membership.

Most unaffiliated competitions follow BD rules, though they may not always use official BD-accredited judges, meaning scoring may not be as consistent as in affiliated competitions.
