Second chances: horses rescued from neglect and abandonment bring joy as much-loved riding school members

A cob who was found abandoned in a stranger’s garden and is now a much-loved riding school horse is just one of 18 neglected equines thriving owing to a new partnership.

Bransby Horses has joined forces with the British Horse Society (BHS) as part of the latter’s Second Chance project. The scheme, which has already benefited 130 horses in collaboration with the RSPCA, involves rehoming rescued horses to BHS approved riding centres.

Since the launch of the Bransby partnership last November, 18 horses rescued by the charity have been rehomed to centres, and six more are awaiting transfer to their new homes. One of these is five-year-old Rex, who was found “severely neglected” in a garden, rescued and rehabilitated by Bransby, and is now part of the family at Peers Clough Packhorses in Lancashire.

The centre’s owner Chris Thomas said: “Rex settled down immediately. He has proved to be an instant hit with our wide age range of clientele and has comfortably taken to our Saturday groups of children.

“The collaboration between Bransby and the BHS has proved very successful for us as an approved centre, for Rex, who is happily settled, and for our clients who think he’s so cute.”

A BHS spokesperson said there has “never been more need” for this project, owing to the numbers of neglected and abandoned horses, and the challenges faced by riding schools. Rescued equines are carefully rehabilitated and assessed to ensure they are suitable for this pathway.

BHS head of business support Sarah Dale said: “Rex’s story perfectly captures why the Second Chance project is so important. Horses and ponies like Rex deserve a future where they are safe, loved and valued – and that’s exactly what this partnership makes possible. We are incredibly proud to be working alongside Bransby Horses and the RSPCA to give these wonderful animals the second chance they truly deserve.”

Bransby rehoming manager Natasha Brocklehurst added that the charity is delighted to be working on the project – and very proud of Rex.

“We’re so thankful to Peers Clough Packhorses for giving Rex a truly wonderful home where he can continue to thrive and bring joy and confidence to young riders,” she said.

Owner of late, legendary horse calls for ‘one last hurrah’ to benefit others in his memory

The owner of the late, legendary Hovis has asked if there could be “one last hurrah” in his memory, to raise more for horses in need.

The H&H equine columnist died aged 23 last month, having raised over £100,000 for charity. His owner Karen Thompson transcribed the part-Clydesdale’s “Friday diary” every week for 17 years, first on the H&H forum, then the website.

These diaries were printed into nine books, the proceeds of which went to Bransby Horses, Hovis’s local equine welfare and rescue charity, and many of which are still in stock.

“It’s funny what bothers you when you lose a massively important part of your life,” Karen said this week, a month after she had to let Hovis go. “Funny the stupid random thoughts that circulate your brain in the wee small hours of the morning.

“For mine this morning it was Hovis’ books, how there is a massive amount of stock sitting at Bransby Horses, unsold as yet and now really with no outlet for that to change.”

Karen said that as Hovis will no longer be appearing in public, “charming new people into being fans, convincing people to buy his books by giving them that big Bambi eyed look that was such a brilliant sales tool”, the books may not be sold.

“A year from now they will be sat gathering dust in a warehouse and people won’t remember who he was,” she said. “Potentially thousands of pounds of good we could have done that will go unrecognised.

“So an ask perhaps. If you ever found us amusing, if we ever made you smile, if you hadn’t bought his books before or have friends you might gift them to then please would you think about getting one or more of them? One last hurrah from him, one more charitable gesture to help those in need?”

Karen said she is not asking anyone to donate, but to buy something she hopes they will enjoy.

“My baby boy’s legacy, if you will,” she said. “I’d appreciate it if you could. It would mean a lot.”

Farewell to Hovis, who was loved by thousands, raised £100,000 and inspired Olympic gold

Tributes have flooded in from across the world to a horse who was loved by thousands, raised over £100,000 for charity – and inspired the British Olympic eventing team to win gold.

Hovis, H&H’s long-standing and only equine columnist, died last week aged 23 as a result of a twisted bowel. The part-Clydesdale gelding had been delighting fans with his Friday diary since 2008, first on the H&H forum then on the website itself from 2013.

His humorous accounts, covering everything from his penchant for “loose-moralled mares” to his battles with Kevin the keratoma and his visits from his vet Herman the German Needle Man and his farrier Cool New Shoes Man, won him a “Hovite Army” of fans. These included top names; medal-winning eventer Mary King rode him at Belton International Horse Trials, and top showjumper Geoff Billington at Your Horse Live, where he became a hugely popular annual fixture. His diaries were made into nine books, raising thousands for welfare charity Bransby Horses.

“I will probably write one last diary, from me to him,” his owner Karen Thompson, who transcribed Hovis’s thoughts every week, told H&H. “But probably what I would say to him would be: ‘Thank you’. For the most amazing nearly 20 years. And that I loved him very much.”

Karen bought Hovis as a four-year-old.

“I went to see Patsy Day, a really lovely dealer who had a nine-year-old warmblood mare,” she said. “That’s what I went to buy, and I came back with him. It went a little awry!”

Karen said that “like everyone, I wanted a horse that was going to be my best friend”, and Patsy said the warmblood mare was not that type.

“She said she was great, but not like that, she’d do the job, but won’t care whether it’s me or anybody else,” Karen said. “She’d told me about this other horse on the phone, and I thought she was mad; I certainly didn’t want some big, hairy thing. She went and fetched him in, and he was covered in mud and all hairy, and I just looked at her. ‘Are you bonkers?’

“He hadn’t grown into the rest of him at that point; he had this great big head, and the rest of him looked like a cut and shut, but his eyes – I’ve never seen eyes like it on a horse. He had eyes like a cow, great big, soft eyes, and that was it. I was somewhat smitten.”

Karen said it was only after she had ridden Hovis in the arena, and, “terrified”, on a hack, that Patsy told her he was four, and had just come from Ireland.

“She said ‘If I’d have told you at the time, you’d never have bought him, but he’s right for you’,” Karen said. “And God bless her, she wasn’t wrong.”

Karen had been looking for a horse to help get the confidence back she had lost with her previous horse, and to do a bit of everything.

“I think the part of the reason he and I and our stories connected with people is because, let’s be honest, I’m a pretty crap rider,” she said. “I just wanted something to go and have a bit of fun on but his showjumping, and cross-country – he could do all those things – and proving that the big lads can do that was good fun.”

Karen joined the H&H forum to expand her knowledge, and she said it was a “life-saver”. She posted his first “diary” in an attempt to introduce some positivity as the day’s other posts had been about bad experiences.

“It was depressing,” she said. “If you ever go back to the first book, it’s literally a paragraph, and I just wrote it as if it was him that had written it. And it was a Friday, and that was that, and I was never going to do another one.

“But the following week, someone said ‘Is Hovis going to write another one?’ And it got to the point that if he wasn’t posted by lunchtime on Friday, the forum was going bananas.”

People started suggesting Hovis write a book, then the story of two neglected horses called Carrot and Spud were shared on the H&H forum. Members of the forum united in their concern and the pair were rescued – and taken in by Bransby. The welfare charity approached Karen to see if they, Hovis and H&H could work together, and the first of nine books was published – which Hovis described as “an epic of such success it makes 50 Shades of Grey look like a B&Q paint guide”.

His diaries continued every week on the H&H website; there would be hell to pay if one was missing. And Karen said they almost wrote themselves.

“Of course, I exaggerated for a bit of comedy, but the reality is, everything I wrote about was true,” she said. “Everything I wrote about had happened. It’s going to be weird not doing it, because I used to write it in 20-30 minutes max; it was just ‘Let’s think about the stuff he’s done this week’. When people met him, they all said ‘He’s just the way you write’. And I’d say ‘I don’t make any of it up. That’s just him’.”

As the Hovite Army grew, so did Hovis’s presence. The one year he was not invited to Your Horse Live, at which people would queue for hours in the rain to meet him, his fans nearly crashed the website, Karen said. He also starred at Belton in 2018, when Bransby was the event’s charity, and Mary King rode him twice for the crowds – including some unexpected manoeuvres.

“Andrew Nicholson said to her ‘I thought you liked your horses a bit more blood than this’, and Hovis just looked at him and produced this trot Valegro would have killed for,” Karen said. “He pranced around the warm-up with the likes of Andrew Nicholson, William Fox-Pitt and Jonty Evans, then she took him out and he proceeded to fly-buck down the centre line with her. I nearly died, but that was just him – totally and utterly him.”

In total, Hovis raised over £100,000, for Bransby, cancer research, victims of the Australian bushfires and Riding for the Disabled Association groups.

“I’m super proud of the fact we genuinely never took a single penny,” Karen said. “His army of fans are just the most generous people. We’ve raised an awful lot of money for charity; there’s a lot of horses at Bransby that wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for him. And as much as it hurts like hell losing him, that kind of legacy – there’s not many others who can say that.”

There are also few other horses who have coached a British team. But after years of selectors’ short-sightedness in passing him over for championships, British Eventing (BE) employed Hovis as official supporter mascot for Paris 2024.

“We’d played along with it for so many years, it was the standard joke, he’d been overlooked for the team,” Karen said. “And to get to play that out properly was unbelievable; it was so much fun. [BE CEO] Rosie Williams said people were coming up to her in France, asking for the little cut-outs of him they took out with them. I said ‘Welcome to Hovis mania’! That was probably the highlight, then him getting to meet Ros Canter and Nicola Wilson, and Ros giving him his medal in November, was amazing. Of course I wish he could have gone for 1,000 more years, but to know that we had last year – you can’t top that.”

Readers will be aware of Hovis’s veterinary history as he fractured a hind leg, snapped both front collateral ligaments, had a keratoma twice and a lens replaced in his left eye.

“I think that’s probably why, in some ways, it was such a shock last week,” Karen said. “Although I honestly think I knew that morning, he’d come back so many times. A few years ago when he had his second round of keratoma, we booked him to be put to sleep, then it was almost like he said, ‘Oh s***, she’s a bit serious about this’. And he came back. But unfortunately this time, it was one too many.”

Karen said Hovis was treated at home for colic and taken to hospital, where the vets attempted to operate but the damage was too great.

“It was one battle too many and the comeback kid didn’t have any more fight left,” Karen said. “I sat with his head in my arms, stroking him and told him how very special he was, how much me, Lils, his family and you all loved him. I told him he would never be forgotten, how many lives he had touched, and how much of a better place he had made the world.

“I told him about all of those who would be waiting for him on the other side and that I would see him again one day. I told him not to be scared and that it was all ok. And then I let him go.

“He went very peacefully and very quickly with me cuddling him right to his last breath. I promised him 19 years ago I would never leave him at the end and I kept that promise.”

Karen paid tribute to the Hoverine, the Destroyer, her daughter Lily’s much-loved “big brother”.

“He saw me through so much,” she said. “He was the constant for me for a long time, and he allowed my daughter to see so much.

“It’s raw as hell but there’s such a pleasure in the stories from people saying he helped them in dark times; that makes it worthwhile. Not just the charity money, although I’m so proud of that, but to know he helped people. He had the biggest personality imaginable; there was just something about him. There will never, ever be another Hovis.”

As one fan said on social media: “Thank you for sharing him with us. He brightened many hearts.”

Rosie Williams told H&H she was “deeply saddened” to hear the news.

“I’m so grateful he had the chance to live out his dream in Paris last year,” she said. “He truly united the country behind our incredible eventing team, bringing joy to everyone. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work – proof that with dedication, dreams can always be achieved.”

Bransby CEO Jo Snell said all at the charity were heartbroken by the loss of “a truly special horse who has brought joy, laughter and inspiration to so many”.

“Through his witty and heartwarming diaries, Hovis became a beloved name within the equestrian community, capturing the hearts of all who followed his journey,” she said.

“Karen has been a passionate advocate for Bransby Horses, raising vital funds through Hovis’s stories, raffles, and other fundraising activities. We are incredibly grateful for her support and the impact she and Hovis have had on our work. Some of our team members have had the privilege of spending time with Hovis at events over the years, helping to care for him at shows and sharing unforgettable moments together. He was a horse like no other and we will for ever cherish the memories he gave us — both through his diary and in person.

“Our thoughts are with Karen at this incredibly difficult time. Hovis will always be in our hearts here at Bransby Horses.”

Police force given headcollars to help catch loose horses in forward-thinking move

Officers from a rural crime police unit will now carry donated headcollars and leadropes following 130 incidents of loose horses in the past 12 months.

Lincolnshire Police has placed the equipment in stations across the county, and in every rural crime team response vehicle. The 20 headcollars and leadropes were donated by Cobbs Country Store to Bransby Horses, but as the charity often helps the police with loose horses, Bransby donated them to the force.

The headcollars are fitted with QR codes, which when scanned with a smartphone, will provide officers with information on how to approach, catch, and lead an equine, as well as contact details for Bransby Horses and other charities.

“This was after an idea raised during a meeting with the rural crime action team about best practice when handling loose and abandoned horses,” a Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said.

“During the last 12 months we have attended more than 130 incidents where horses have been reported loose. Officers can now use the headcollars and leadropes to keep the horses safe. When a horse roams away from where they should be, they can cause a serious risk to road users with the potential of a collision causing serious harm to all involved.”

The spokesperson added that when a horse is found loose officers, who also carry microchip readers, will try to locate an owner, but if an owner cannot be contacted, the force liaises with Bransby and other local contacts to provide temporary boarding.

“As part of Bransby’s continued efforts to work collaboratively with emergency services, they approached Lincolnshire’s rural crime team to share their knowledge and experiences and to gain a better understanding of how they could best support us with equine-related incidents,” said the spokesperson.

“Bransby Horses cannot respond to loose equines on a road, only assist, as they need the services of the police to make the area safe for all road users.”

PC Karen Irving, of the rural crime action team, said: “We’ve all been to jobs where we’ve used belts or similar to hold onto a horse”.

“While crisps or a packet of Polos sometimes works, this equipment will help secure a horse and reduce the chance of things going wrong. We are very grateful to Bransby and Cobbs Country Store for kindly donating the equipment,” she said.

“We’ve talked about horse abandonment and other issues and this idea was brought up as a positive way to contain loose horses and keep our colleagues safe. The work we do in the rural crime action team is aimed at keeping our rural communities safe, preventing and investigating rural crime and protecting the welfare of animals.”

‘Sad news’ as Bransby Horses confirms reduction in staff – and plans to reduce equine numbers

Bransby Horses has confirmed that 17 team members will leave the charity – as its restructure consultation to address a forecasted £2.5m deficit concludes.

In June the charity announced the “extremely difficult decision” to put 17 jobs at risk of redundancy following a strategic review to address the “unsustainable” forecasted losses.

Today (28 August) a Bransby spokesperson confirmed the “sad news that it is losing 17 valued team members” after the financial challenges left the charity with “no choice but to restructure its operations”.

Bransby chief executive Jo Snell said “any process of this kind is always difficult”.

“We’ve worked closely and collaboratively with everyone affected to ensure colleagues were fully supported and to minimise compulsory redundancies wherever possible,” she said.

“While these 17 roles are no longer part of the structure, we’ve been able to significantly reduce the number of compulsory redundancies to just two through our voluntary redundancy scheme, redeployment efforts and natural attrition; 14 team members opted for voluntary redundancy and one additional employee has chosen to leave to pursue new opportunities.”

Ms Snell added that since announcing the restructure the team had been “incredibly moved by the public support”.

“Their support and generosity mean the world to us and we’re enormously grateful to the many people who have got in touch with offers of help or suggestions on how we can generate more income, all of which we’re reviewing and exploring where practically possible,” she said. .

“Bransby Horses has been transforming the lives of equines for more than 50 years and we believe our new operating model will ensure we’re able to continue to deliver on every aspect of our important work, albeit at a slightly reduced scale in some cases, while significantly easing the financial pressures we’re currently facing.”

The charity will continue to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses – but it “anticipates” that its 290 resident equines at seven yards will reduce to approximately 250 equines at five yards over the next 12 months. The visitor centre will remain open.

The Bransby spokesperson said the charity aims to offset this reduction in numbers through its continued partnerships with fosterers and equine welfare partners, as well as “by resolving as many welfare concerns in the community as possible”.

It is anticipated the charity’s new operating model will “deliver much-needed savings amounting to £1.3m”. Phase two of the project, which involves reviewing assets and facilities, is under way to identify any further cost reduction or income generation opportunities. The review is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Abandoned pony who followed the postman rescued from children’s playground

An abandoned pony who would follow a postman on his rounds – and was later found by children in a playground – will now have a “safe and loving” home for life.

Residents in West Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, contacted the police after repeatedly finding a skewbald pony in their gardens, and walking along busy roads.

Equine welfare charity Bransby Horses stepped in when the pony, who has been named “Spitfire”, turned up in the playground of a children’s home.

“Oblivious to the mayhem he was causing, we recently took in the pony, following reports of him frequently escaping from his tether and even following the postman on his rounds,” said a Bransby spokesperson.

“When we arrived the pony was relaxed and munching on some flowers in the school playground. He was very straight forward to catch and happily loaded onto our trailer.

“As we are not allowed by law to take any animal without the owner’s consent, the police placed an abandonment notice where he was found, and he boarded with us for the duration.”

The spokesperson said Spitfire was not microchipped and despite numerous appeals for his owner to come forward, he was not claimed. As no owner responded to the abandonment notice within the necessary timeframe, he is now in the charity’s ownership, where he will be “cared for in a safe and loving environment for the rest of his life”.

“Spitfire will complete a short quarantine period during which his individual needs will be assessed by a vet and care team, who will ensure he gets the medication, treatment, nutrition, companionship and exercise he needs,” said the spokesperson.

The manager of the children’s home said the children “loved Spitfire and are sad that he’s gone”, but they had been “so worried about him”.

“He was tethered to a post where he had no shelter and would be there in all weathers,” they said. “He was great at escaping and would often be in our garden. In fact, one day I’m sure he was trying to get on a swing.

“We were so pleased when Bransby Horses came to help. We were sad to see him go, but glad he is not on his own anymore.”

‘Difficult decision’ as equine welfare charity jobs at risk amid £2.5m deficit

Bransby Horses has announced that 17 of its employees are at risk of redundancy – as the welfare charity aims to address a forecasted £2.5m deficit.

Today (21 June) Bransby said the “extremely difficult decision” to put the jobs at risk follows a “comprehensive strategic review aimed at addressing an unsustainable £2.5m deficit forecasted for this year – the largest in its history.” The charity employs 170 people and is home to 299 equines.

“We have a wonderful, talented and dedicated team of people at Bransby Horses, and we’re devastated that despite our best efforts, the financial challenges we face leave us with no other option but to restructure our operations,” said Bransby chief executive Jo Snell.

The affected roles are in senior leadership and the equine welfare and support service teams, and all proposals are subject to a “full and thorough” 30-day consultation process, starting next week.

“Like so many other charities, Bransby Horses has faced exponential rises in running costs due to various external factors, including soaring food and energy prices and increasing rates of pay in the employment market – with the cost of delivering its welfare and estates work rising by over 50% since 2018,” said a Bransby spokesperson.

“At the same time, its fundraising income has plateaued because of economic challenges, with uncertainty around legacy income – which accounts for 65% of the charity’s total income – due to the slowing housing market. The combination of these factors has led to a growing mismatch between the charity’s income and expenditure.”

The spokesperson added that Bransby started work to “address this mismatch” several years ago and introduced a variety of cost-cutting measures, including initiatives to reduce facility costs, lower energy and water consumption, and freeze recruitment.

“While these measures delivered £450,000 in savings over an 18-month period, it was clear that more action was required to address the ever-widening gap between the charity’s income and expenditure,” he said.

“In November 2023 it began an extensive review of its operational model at every level across its two Lincolnshire sites at Bransby and Barlings, to identify how it could still deliver on its mission to transform the lives of equines, while significantly reducing costs to secure its long-term future.”

Following this review and a “comprehensive assessment of several possible operating models” the charity has taken the decision to adapt its model in a number of areas to ensure it is “able to continue to deliver on its charitable purpose in a more consolidated, efficient, and financially sustainable form”.

Jo Snell added that Bransby recognises “just how hard this decision will be on those directly and indirectly impacted” and the charity is “fully committed to supporting everyone affected”.

“This includes working closely with impacted employees to look for every opportunity to mitigate job losses and, where this is not possible, supporting employees in finding new employment,” she said.

“While this is distressing news for everyone at Bransby Horses, we believe our new operating model will enable us to continue to deliver on every aspect of our work to improve the lives of equines, albeit at a slightly reduced scale, while significantly easing the financial pressures we’re currently facing to protect the charity’s long-term future.”

The spokesperson said Bransby is reviewing all its assets and facilities to identify any further cost reduction and income generation opportunities, and the charity expects this review to be completed by the end of the year. The Bransby visitor centre will remain open.

Tiny foal smaller than average family dog born to rescued miniature pony

A tiny foal weighing just 12kg – smaller than the average family dog – has been born safely to a rescued Shetland pony, who pulled through life-threatening illness during her pregnancy.

Pika, who stands at around 4hh (16 inches) high, is one of “if not the smallest” equines welfare charity Bransby Horses has ever had in its care.

Both Polly and her foal are doing well, and their health is being carefully monitored.

“We had been watching Polly very carefully for the past few days, expecting a foal to arrive any day. She was so quick to give birth that when she was checked at suppertime there was no sign, and half an hour later there she was with her foal,” said Bransby Horses senior press officer Maria Thompson.

“We just can’t get over how lovely they both are. We have had to adjust the fencing as it’s too high and would not keep Pika safe.

“We are so pleased both mother and son are doing well as it was touch and go for Polly when she first came to us but, thanks to our wonderful supporters, we were able to provide the care she needed.”

Polly was first seen by a vet at one of the British Horse Society’s (BHS) healthcare clinics, which are aimed at engaging hard-to-reach communities and provide free advice. They also provide reduced-cost services, such as passporting, castration, farrier services, and a weigh bridge.

Bransby Horses works with the BHS at these clinics and, as was the case of Polly, were able to take in a vulnerable equine when there was no other viable option.

“Polly was very sick when we first saw her,” said Nadine Hall, welfare and rescue officer at Bransby Horses.

“Her breathing was laboured, and she had muscle tremors. She had a suspected calcium deficiency, and further veterinary investigations showed her liver was not working, a condition which may require long term [sanctuary] care, alongside her pregnancy.

“After initial treatment to ensure she was well enough to travel, she was first taken to a specialist equine hospital for urgent medical attention. She very nearly died because of her conditions.

“Following a miraculous recovery, Polly was transported to our intensive care unit where she gave birth a few weeks later.

“So far mother and baby are doing well, Polly has responded to liver treatment and the liver is starting to work now, although there is still ongoing healing. We are monitoring them closely and hope to get them out into a bigger paddock, once we have adjusted the fencing.”

Major welfare concerns as hoof neglect means four horses put down

A leading equine welfare charity said it has “serious concerns” over hoof care – as it has had to put four horses down in the past year.

A spokesman for Bransby Horses told H&H the team was worried by the number of cases of hoof neglect the charity saw last year – a trend that is continuing in 2024.

“In 2023 more than half of the animals involved had to be put to sleep due to the severity of their condition,” she said, adding that financial constraints were one factor, but horses who were difficult to handle, with owners’ lack of knowledge, have also played a part.

Bransby welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson said: “In 2023 we had 18 cases, four of which were life-threatening, which is unprecedented for us. We’ve seen similar cases over the years but never this many and it’s concerning.

“As we move into 2024 we continue to see long feet left untrimmed for months and shod feet left well over the recommended four to six weeks – the majority of all admissions at the start of this year have needed urgent farrier treatment. The last time we saw a case anything like what we are seeing now was four years ago. At the time it was the worst neglect case we’d ever dealt with, but in 2023 we had three cases to match it and one that was more severe.”

Two ponies signed over to Bransby last October had to be put down as the lack of hoof care had caused “irreversible” damage to hoof structures, ligaments and tendons.

“It’s not just the long foot growth that is the problem, it’s the unseen damage to the internal structures of the foot that often mean these horses will need pain management for the remainder of their lives,” Ms Jenkinson said.

“Although there is no official shortage of farriers in the UK as such, there seems to be an issue arising where owners are struggling financially, and this is often exacerbated by horses that are difficult to handle and farriers are, quite rightly, reluctant to provide a farrier service.

‘Anyone who cares for horses’ asked for views on cost-of-living crisis

Equine welfare charities have launched a new survey to find out if the cost-of-living crisis has worsened for owners over the last 12 months.

The survey is a follow-up to the 2023 National Equine Welfare Committee (NEWC) survey, which received 8,000 responses. Findings included that almost one in five participants said they are having to consider difficult decisions such as sale, sharing or euthanasia of their horses, owing to rising costs.

The new survey, launched yesterday (16 January) has been developed by World Horse Welfare with support from NEWC partner organisations Redwings, Blue Cross, the British Horse Society, Bransby Horses, and Oak Tree Animals Charity

“Anyone who cares for horses will be able to contribute to an understanding of how increased costs are affecting their ability to care for their animals, and this information will feed into the development of targeted support for those most in need and help prevent welfare issues arising,” said a spokesman for the project.

Rebecca Boulert, World Horse Welfare education officer, said it is “imperative” for charities dealing with cases where individuals are unable to care for their horses because of financial reasons, to understand if the situation has worsened over the last 12 months.

“We know from last year’s research that many owners were just about coping, and all possible cost savings had already been made, but that left little room for a further squeeze on purses,” she said.

“This year’s survey aims to show whether things have stabilised, improved or deteriorated, allowing us to plan and act accordingly. We really hope as many horse owners as possible engage with the research and complete the survey, regardless of whether or not they were involved in last year’s project.”

A tailored version of the survey targeting charities and other equestrian rescue centres will run concurrently to find out how the continuing cost-of-living crisis is affecting these organisations. Those involved will be contacted directly by NEWC to take part.

The anonymised results from the surveys will be made public to “highlight any challenges and concerns that owners are facing”, and their potential impact on equine welfare. The results will also be shared with the UK Government, devolved administrations, and local authorities to help inform their understanding of the situation, as well as policy decisions, including “potential financial support for those most in need”.

‘Winter has hit the equine community hard’: cost-of-living concerns continue

Charity rehoming figures have dropped in 2023, as owners continue to feel the effects of the cost-of-living crisis.

Although inflation has eased compared to last year, families continue to face high food, fuel and energy bills. A survey run by the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) last winter showed that one in five of more than 8,000 owners surveyed said they were having to consider difficult decisions, such as sale, sharing or euthanasia of their horses, owing to rising costs (news, 13 July).

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress told H&H with the increased cost of living the charity “anticipated an increased number of calls for help”.

“However we haven’t seen the influx of welfare cases we were expecting since then and that seems to be the consensus across the sector – it’s a waiting game and the NEWC survey will be rerun this winter to keep an eye on the state of play as the winter progresses.”

By December Redwings had taken in 104 equines this year, and rehomed 101.

“While this was less than our record 147 homes found in 2022, this is still a vital way that Redwings can continue to manage our capacity, so we are able to continue our life-saving front-line welfare work,” said Ms Cutress.

The RSPCA took in 444 equines in 2023, up 15% on 2022.

“This year we rehomed 82 horses, which is a drop of more than 50% on last year, which is a trend across the rehoming sector as the cost of living takes its toll,” RSPCA equine specialist Mark Kennedy told H&H.

World Horse Welfare had 301 admissions across its four centres, including foals born at the charity from pregnant mares taken in.

“This is around 50 horses higher than [each of] the last two years, but is a return to pre-Covid levels; we took in 369 in 2019. Our rehoming levels have dropped from the record 300 rehomed a year during the pandemic, with 279 rehomed this year, back to more normal levels,” said a World Horse Welfare spokesman.

“Sadly, we continue to see a number of welfare intakes involving large numbers of horses with multi-agency cooperation. All rehomed horses remain in our ownership for life, and we always take them back if circumstances for the rehomers change. Although the number of rehomed horses returned is slightly higher this year, when we look at the proportion of all horses currently out, the return rate has remained stable.”

Bransby Horses took in 119 equines, compared to 150 last year. The charity rehomed 83 in 2023 and 109 in 2022.

“Throughout the year we have responded to abandoned horses that have not been microchipped, this makes it very difficult for us or the authorities to trace and owner. Twenty-two equines have been signed over to the charity under the Control of Horses Act to date this year,” a Bransby spokesman told H&H.

“This winter has hit the equine community hard, so we are expecting an increase in calls for support and welfare concerns as we head into 2024.”

Young girl given just 50% chance of life at birth and fostered rescue pony crowned lead rein champions

A little girl who weighed less than a bag of sugar when she was born is looking forward to spending Christmas with her rescue pony following a “wonderful” first summer together.

Peyton Keir was given a less than 50% chance of survival when she was born prematurely at 24 weeks old, but the seven-year-old has “not let it stop her from fulfilling her horsey-dreams” with her pony Skip.

Rebecca Cutts, Peyton’s mum, decided it was time to get her daughter a pony after spending a year shielding during the initial Covid outbreak. She approached Bransby Horses where they met Skip, who had been born at the charity to a rescued pregnant mare.

“I just thought it might be something nice for us both to do together so we

applied to foster a rescue pony from Bransby Horses,” said Rebecca, who had owned horses previously.

“We took Skip on just to have some fun with and he has just been incredible. What he has brought to mine and Peyton’s life is hard to put into words. But he brings me sanity, he makes us laugh every day, he calms Peyton and he’s so cheeky, we love him to bits.”

Peyton and Skip attended their first show together this summer, a month after Skip’s arrival with the family, and they won their class.

“I was in tears. I was so proud of them both. It wasn’t something we ever expected when we decided to get a pony,” said Rebecca.

“At the end of the summer we decided to go bigger and have a go at the Traditional of the Year Show. On the day we were up at 4am, at the stables for 5am and arrived at the showground in Olney for 8.30am.”

Peyton and Skip won their 10-strong class, which put them forward for the championship in the evening.

“I just looked at it as an amazing experience for him and Peyton and never thought for a minute we would get placed,” said Rebecca, adding that as they walked into the arena for the championship Queen’s We Are the Champions was being played.

“It felt emotional from the start. I looked around at the competition and thought we had no chance but after we trotted him round and lined up, the man called over the speaker; ‘Champion and the traditional best lead rein of 2023 goes to Peyton and Bransby Skip’.

“I couldn’t believe it. I had tears streaming down my face and poor Peyton was just in

shock – she couldn’t believe it either. It was one of the best and proudest moments of my life. Peyton and Skip were utterly amazing. Skip was the best boy ever, he acted like a professional all day.”

Rebecca added that the family is “so grateful” to Bransby Horses for giving them “such an amazing opportunity”.

A Bransby spokesman added that Skip has been “spoiled rotten” with treats and hugs ever since.

“Peyton is now looking forward to spending Christmas with her favourite pony,” said the spokesman.

Abandoned mare and foal ‘saved in time for Christmas’

An abandoned mare and foal were “saved in time for Christmas” thanks to Bransby Horses.

Snow Bunting and her foal Puffin were spotted by Humberside Police officers, who contacted the charity with concerns that no one had visited the horses “for months”.

A Bransby spokesman said that at the time another seven ponies were “often escaping” from the field where they were being illegally fly-grazed, but when Bransby field officer Kris Walker attended the field the others had been taken away before the team arrived.

“When I arrived there were just two in the field, a mare and foal. I was quite concerned about the foal, as he was very lethargic and depressed. I wasn’t sure if he was suckling either, so there was a concern that he might not even be Snow Bunting’s foal,” said Kris.

“I monitored them daily and it soon became clear they were on their own so we would need to do something if these ponies were going to have any chance of survival.”

Bransby worked with the police, RSPCA and a vet to obtain permission to take Snow Bunting and Puffin into their care. While this process was ongoing Kris continued to monitor the ponies.

Bransby welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson said: “We are very grateful to everyone who called us, ultimately saving the lives of these two lovely ponies who would not have lasted through the winter without help. They were both very thin, poor and in need of food and veterinary attention.”

Puffin, thought to be around six months old, now weighs just over 57kg and has “improved daily”.

“He is still very thin but now suckling from his mother,” said a Bransby spokesman, who added that Puffin and Snow Bunting are being treated for very high worm burdens and malnourishment, but it is “hoped that they will make a full recovery”.

“All efforts were made to trace an owner but as no one came forward to claim the ponies they have now been signed over into the care of Bransby Horses.”

Deliberate flooding to save homes could cost equine charity hundreds of thousands of pounds

More than 250 acres of land owned by Bransby Horses is still under water today (24 October) as a result of Storm Babet.

H&H reported last week that the equine welfare charity had had two hours’ notice to move horses as the Environment Agency (EA) warned them of flooding.

Despite drier weather this weekend, the floods have kept rising, Bransby said today, and it is estimated that 40% of its land is under water.

“Despite moving 100 horses to safety, many have had to be moved again following rising water levels,” said the charity’s head of estates, Victoria Elliot. “Looking at this week’s forecast, we may see the current situation get worse and the impact will continue long after the water subsides and will almost certainly impact our winter grazing.”

Bransby staff moved about 70 of the 300 horses on site on Friday, when the EA said it would deliberately flood land to protect houses in nearby Lincoln. Another 30 horses were moved over the weekend.

“It is possible the charity’s ability to take in new rescues will be affected in the coming weeks but at this point the full impact on their ability to operate is under review,” a Bransby spokesman said.

“Bransby Horses works very closely with the Environment Agency to reduce flooding in Lincoln by using its grazing land as flood plains, but sadly it receives no funding or compensation for this. The impact of the flooding will be an additional cost coming at an already difficult economic time.”

Last time the charity was flooded, in 2019, the cost ran into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Bransby is open to visitors at the moment; it won the best small visitor attraction title at the Destination Lincolnshire awards this month.

“We don’t want to disappoint our supporters, especially during the half-term school holidays,” said Bransby’s Sally Banton. “Now more than ever we need to continue raising funds for the charity to help pay for the cost of the latest flooding.

“Our café is open and our half-term activities, including Pecan’s Pumpkin Patch, are in full swing. By visiting us you are helping to support us through this crisis and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who visits and supports us.”

Bransby has set up a donation page for anyone who can help.

“It will only be over the coming weeks that the charity will know the full extent and cost of this crisis,” the spokesman said.

Sanctuary mobilises to move 70 horses after two-hour flood warning

Staff at Bransby Horses had to move 70 horses in two hours, after the Environment Agency (EA) warned the charity some of its land was going to be flooded.

As was the case in 2019, and under an agreement between Bransby and the EA, the latter advised that drain valves at the former be closed. This means thousands of homes in and around Lincoln are protected from flooding, after recent heavy rainfall, but that the water poured on to the charity’s land instead, a foot deep.

“Bransby Horses received a two-hour warning from the Environment Agency this morning (20 October) to say they may need to direct water onto the Till Washlands to prevent further flooding in Lincoln,” a spokesman for the charity said.

“While the warning gave them a chance to act and remove any animals from affected fields, the full extent of damage to the charity’s vital pastures will not be known for a number of days.”

Bransby had to move about 70 horses from the area, which a spokesman told H&H is known as the ark, where new arrivals are quarantined.

The spokesman added that the charity’s winter grazing has been flooded, and it is not known what impact this will have. The Bransby visitor centre has been closed for the next 48 hours and all non-essential staff sent home.

“Due to the unprecedented levels of rain there is significant surface water flooding at either end of the village and so the decision to close our visitor centre has been made,” said Bransby’s Sally Banton. “All our equines are safe and we are monitoring the flooding status from our control centre in the village.”

Abandoned pony found tied to gates on busy industrial estate

A “very friendly” pony found tied to gates at a busy industrial estate has been rescued and is “doing well” at his new charity home.

Workers arrived at S.I.M Warehouse and Logistics in Doncaster’s Shaw Lane Industrial Estate to find the 12hh grey looking “bewildered, but otherwise calm”. They gave him a bucket of water and made him a holding pen, before calling equine welfare charity Bransby Horses.

“When we arrived we knew we would have to remove him from where he was as it was not a safe environment for him to remain in, mainly due to the high volume of lorries and trucks entering and leaving the facility,” said Bransby Horses’ welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson.

“This meant that the police were then able to grant us the authority to take the pony to Bransby Horses for the duration of the notice in the hope an owner would come forward and claim him.”

The pony, who was named Simmy after the company, was not microchipped and his owner could not be traced before the abandonment notice expired, so he has been signed over into the care of Bransby Horses.

“Simmy is enjoying life in a securely fenced grass paddock – a far cry from the industrial estate he was found on,” said a statement from the charity.

“Overall, he has settled well into life at Bransby Horses and it is hoped he may be rehomed through the charity’s Perfect Partner rehoming scheme once he is ready.”

‘It’s been an honour’: farewell to former police horse who led guards at Buckingham Palace

Bransby Horses has paid heartbroken tribute to a former police horse who led the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

The welfare charity said former Metropolitan Police mount Saratoga had to be put down aged 12, on vets’ advice, owing to a longstanding lameness issue. A spokesman said the 16.2hh gelding was a favourite with staff and visitors, and that it is an honour to be able to care for such horses.

“We are heartbroken to have lost the wonderful Saratoga,” Bransby press officer Maria Thompson told H&H. “He came to us after a short career with the police as we were able to provide the specialist care he needed. It’s credit to all those who’ve looked after him that he had so many happy years with us.”

Maria said Saratoga had a short but “illustrious” career in the police; he joined the force as a four-year-old in 2015 and enjoyed taking part in parades. He worked at football matches and leading out the changing of the guard.

His trainer and rider, PC Claudia Breen, said he took to the job quickly, and loved his work.

“He was a cracking little horse,” she said. “He was everyone’s favourite, the sergeants used to argue over who would ride him because he was so easy. Normally it takes a few years for a police horse to be able to cope with the crowds at Buckingham Palace but Saratoga was doing it within months.

“In fact he was operational within seven months, which means anyone in the force could ride him – this usually takes a couple of years to achieve. He did two years with us and then one day his hind leg locked out.”

Saratoga had veterinary treatment but investigations found a ligament tear in his stifle, and he was retired to Bransby. The charity commits to taking in up to two former service horses every year; their temperaments mean they are good “nannies” for some more anxious horses and ponies.

“Being such friendly horses, they also enjoy meeting the thousands of visitors to Bransby Horses each year,” Maria said, adding that Saratoga, with his “sweet, laid-back nature”, became a “Sponsorship Star”. This meant supporters who made regular donations in his name would be sent regular information and updates on him.

“Saratoga thoroughly enjoyed his retirement at Bransby Horses and we have many happy memories of him,” she said. “It’s an honour for us as a charity to be able to offer these beautiful working horses retirement and we are for ever grateful to our loyal supporters whose donations made this possible.”

Bransby still has one former police horse in its care, grey gelding Steele.

Fears rise in ‘unwanted’ horses will overwhelm charities this winter

Charity rehoming figures remained steady in 2022 – but concerns have been shared that an “increase in unwanted horses could be just around the corner”, as the cost-of-living crisis remains a major worry.

As inflation, fuel, and energy costs soared across the UK this year, there are few who have not been affected, including in the equestrian industry. Statistics from the RSPCA’s Animal Kindness Index 2022, a UK-wide survey, showed the cost of living crisis is potentially “one of the biggest threats to the welfare of animals across the country”.

The RSPCA took in 365 horses by December, and a charity spokesman told H&H the RSPCA is “extremely concerned” about the impact of the ongoing crisis on owners’ finance, and consequently their equines.

“A worrying trend we saw at the end of summer is that the condition of some equines entering our care was very poor – often around 0.5 body condition score,” he said, adding that this was a “huge red flag”.

“There are other signs of the crisis starting to impact equines, with charities which accept them from the general public reporting more approaches from owners regarding potential surrender of their horses or asking for advice about care costs.”

The RSPCA rehomed 186 equines last year, which left the charity in a “better position at the beginning of winter than it might have been”, but the spokesman said capacity issues at RSPCA centres mean it is continuing to seek horse fosterers to help look after the equines in its care.

Bransby Horses took in a similar amount of equines to previous years, with 155 admissions between January and November. But in the same period it had 50 calls from owners looking to sign their horses over owing to financial difficulties. The charity is concerned an “increase of unwanted horses could be just around the corner”.

“We think the number of requests to charities to take in equines from private homes is steadily increasing across the board and we are concerned routine care could lessen as people struggle financially – which in turn will be compromising welfare short- and long-term,” said Rachel Jenkinson, Bransby welfare manager.

“We understand the current financial situation is putting increased strain on owners. All we would say is please do not lose hope – give Bransby Horses a call if you are struggling, we are here to help and can signpost you to possible solutions.

“While it is sadly not possible for us to say yes to all private intake requests, we will always respond to welfare concerns, abandonments and those in immediate danger.”

A Bransby spokesman added that ”demand continues to be high” for rehoming, with 109 equines placed in foster homes during 2022.

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress told H&H it had been “a year of consolidation” for the charity, given the cost-of-living challenges.

“We’ve had to be shrewd and negotiate the best terms we can get on everything we purchase and are still facing huge increases in feed and hay bills plus electricity and other utilities,” she said, adding that despite the “ongoing difficult circumstances” the charity was able to take in 109 horses and ponies this year up to December.

“We’ve worked hard to find homes for 147 equines between January and November. We hope people will continue to support the important rehoming work of registered charities next year but would urge people to think carefully about taking on a horse at this time,” she said.

A World Horse Welfare spokesman told H&H at the end of 2022 its four centres were at around 75% capacity, and the “strong demand” for rehoming had helped keep space going into winter.

“As winter bites, we are alert to the predicted effects of increased cost of living,” he said.

The charity had rehomed 312 equids this year by mid-December and taken in 274, not including foals born at the rescue centres.

‘Without a word, he taught me everything’: truck driver pays tribute to rescue horse with Christmas work

A truck driver will spend his Christmas Day caring for 300 rescue horses and ponies as a “way of saying thank you” to the horse who taught him “the greatest lessons in life”.

Will Gee has been volunteering with Bransby Horses since 2017.

“There was a horse called Denzel in my village who had lived in a field near my house for about 10 years. There were a few problems with him and eventually I called the Bransby welfare hotline,” said Will.

“Another villager was feeding him and this caused Denzel to gain so much weight that he developed laminitis.”

A member of the Bransby team visited Denzel and he was taken into the care of the charity, where Will continued to visit him.

“I could see how much happier he was there and after a while I asked if I could help out. After a few weeks of training I was able to start volunteering on one of the yards,” said Will.

“I muck out the stables and help with the daily checks once a week. I’ll be there on Christmas Day and we will all have Christmas dinner together at Bransby’s cafe. It’s great really, I live on my own and my family don’t live nearby, so I really love being at Bransby at this time of the year.

“If it hadn’t been for Denzel I would never have found the charity or become involved in volunteering for them. Without saying a word, Denzel taught me everything about what is important in life.”

A Bransby spokesman said Denzel lived at Bransby for many years, but he has since died. The spokesman added that the impact Denzel had on Will “will last a lifetime”.

“The plight of horses is overlooked far too easily. I feel like people don’t always see their struggles in the same way they do for cats and dogs,” said Will.

“I hope more people visit or support Bransby Horses and see for themselves what amazing animals they are.”

Woman jailed as 12 horses rescued from ‘heartbreaking’ conditions and colt put put down

A woman has been sent to prison for keeping 13 horses in “heartbreaking conditions”, one of whom had to be put down.

Davina Leedham, 62, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on 25 October, following a trial in her absence in July. She was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to 12 horses and ponies by failing to address their poor condition and failing to seek veterinary care for a gelding’s leg wound. She was also found guilty of failing to meet the needs of three other horses.

An arrest warrant without bail was issued following the trial and she was arrested last month, and held in custody.

In July 2019 RSPCA inspectors and officers from Bransby Horses attended a location in Branston Fen, Bardney, following concerns raised by the police, who were in the area dealing with an unrelated matter. A vet was also in attendance.

An RSPCA spokesman said a large number of horses were found, many in poor condition.

“Many of those found outside were kept in areas where there was little to no grass available in any of the enclosures and there was no shelter,” said the spokesman.

“Inside a barn were three penned areas housing two ponies and a horse. The first small enclosure housed a chestnut pony in poor condition, with spine and pelvis clearly visible and hooves overgrown. The pen was very small and was constructed from a combination of metal gates and wooden pallets, measuring approximately eight feet by eight feet.”

Further into the barn a bay horse was found in a slightly larger enclosure with six-feet high fencing, “giving the appearance of a cage”. The horse’s ribs and spine were “clearly visible”, its hooves were overgrown and it was weaving its head from side to side. Another horse had a wound on its quarters that “should have been attended and treated”.

“Sadly one young colt was in so much discomfort and pain due to persistent lameness an independent vet advised he should be put down on welfare grounds to prevent him suffering further,” said the spokesman.

RSPCA inspector Kate Burris said the conditions the horses were being kept in were “unacceptable”, with “so many of them in such poor condition”.“It was heartbreaking,” she said.

“We are so grateful to Bransby for taking on such a large number of horses and I am so pleased that they have all thrived since being in their care.”

In mitigation Leedham said she had failed to attend the trial as her mother had been ill and that one horse, Cracker, had been under vet treatment.

She was sentenced to 20 weeks’ immediate custody, banned from keeping all animals for 10 years and ordered to pay £500 costs.

“We were able to provide the specialist care and attention these horses needed thanks to the fantastic support we receive from the public and we thank them unreservedly – it doesn’t bear thinking what would have happened were it not for charities like us and the RSPCA,” said Bransby welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson.

“Following a long road the horses have recovered well but the trauma they endured cannot be ignored. We would urge anyone who is struggling to care for their horses or who knows someone who is, to please call our welfare hotline. We are here to help and will do everything in our power to prevent a situation such as this happening again.

“Keeping horses is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly.”

‘Heartbreak’ as mule rescued from the streets as a foal is put down aged 30

A mule taken in by Bransby Horses after being found roaming the streets as a foal has been put down aged 30, following a “full and happy life”.

Ebony was rescued by the Lincolnshire charity from the streets of Gainsborough in 1992. Although it was not clear if she had escaped from a field or been abandoned, when no one claimed her she went on to receive “all the love and care she needed” from Bransby staff.

A Bransby spokesman said Ebony’s character and looks earned her “legendary status” and she was a firm favourite with the teams and supporters.

“She was a very intelligent mule and when she was younger she liked to be doing things rather than just grazing in a field,” he said. “During her early years she was trained to pull a small cart to help with weight management and keep her busy and she has lived with fellow mule Penelope and Shetland Cinderella for many happy years.”

“For many years Ebony was a popular Sponsorship Star but retired in 2019 to enjoy her twilight years out of the limelight. Since she retired she has been very happy playing and relaxing in her paddock with her little herd.”

Ebony celebrated her 30th birthday in January with a “mule-friendly” cake, which she shared with Penelope and Cinderella.

“Her loss will be felt by so many who had the pleasure of meeting her but none more so than the yard teams who have looked after her daily needs,” said the spokesman.

“As one of the greatest and most loved characters at the charity, she will be deeply missed. She lived a full and happy life, made possible only by the kind donations of those who support Bransby’s important equine welfare work.”

Bransby PR officer Maria Thompson added everyone at the charity is “heartbroken”.

“It’s so tough when we lose one, especially when they are as special as Ebony.”

Rescue mare gives birth to healthy foal, as charity awaits more new arrivals

Bransby Horses has welcomed a newborn foal – with two more on the way – following a large-scale rescue this year.

The charity was involved the multi-agency rescue of 40 Welsh mountain ponies following the sudden death of their owner in February. Five ponies were taken in by Bransby, with others going to World Horse Welfare, the Blue Cross and HAPPA.

One of them, Periwinkle, gave birth to a healthy colt, named Cobalt, on 28 March.

“Periwinkle is being an amazing mother – she strikes the perfect balance between being protective but also being very happy to let us handle her baby,” said Bransby animal reception centre team leader Lauren.

“She wasn’t producing a lot of milk in the beginning but fingers crossed feeding is now going well for them both. Cobalt’s bloods showed he has a good level of antibodies which means he got plenty of colostrum. His confidence is growing day by day and he loves scratches and playing with our sweeping brush when we are tidying up.”

Auburn and Tawny, who were also in the herd, are expected to give birth “imminently”.

“From not being able to get anywhere near Tawny and having to herd her into a stable, we can now catch her safely, lead her around the yard to be weighed and groomed, plus this means she can also begin her foot work,” said Bransby equine welfare assistant Mia surname. “It’s been a really long process to gain her trust but we are heading in the right direction.

“Auburn will do just about anything for food so she has been easy to win over.”

The other ponies taken in by Bransby were Ivory, who is now playing “aunty” to Cobalt, and Bongo, who arrived as a stallion but has since been gelded.

“Currently none of these ponies, including Cobalt the foal, are on view to the public but we hope in time this will change,” said the Bransby spokesman.

Cost of living concerns as welfare charity reports ‘steep’ rise in calls from worried owners

Concerns have been raised about owners struggling to afford the upkeep of their horses as a welfare charity reports a “steep increase” in calls.

Bransby Horses said it had received the same number of calls in the first three months of this year as it did in the whole of 2021.

“Last year we received 108 calls from members of the public looking for advice on what to do if they could no longer keep their horse and we received 22 direct requests to take ownership of their equine,” said a Bransby spokesman.

“So far this year, we have already received 25 direct requests to take ownership of horses from private homes. Half of them stated this was due to financial reasons.”

The increase in the cost of living has been widely reported as fuel prices reached a record high, the new energy price cap came into force on 1 April, and an increase to national insurance was announced.

“We are concerned as a sector that the current financial situation, that is the rise in living costs, is having an impact on many horse owners,” said Bransby welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson.

“During the pandemic there was a huge increase in demand for horses and ponies, so we are aware there are more privately owned horses in homes. Now we suspect the value of a horse may decline as the costs to keep them increase.”

The charity has urged any owner who is concerned about their horse or is struggling financially to get in touch so it can help “before it becomes a problem”.

“Although we may not be able to assist with taking over ownership, we can offer advice and support to ensure the best outcome for everyone,” said the spokesman.

According to the Institute for Government’s most recent research on “the cost of living crisis”, a combination of high inflation outstripping wage increases and upcoming tax increases are squeezing incomes for many households. The study goes on to say the crisis will “probably worsen” as tax increases come in.

‘Legendary’ mule celebrates 30th birthday by sharing cake with her friends

A mule with a distinctive bray has celebrated her 30th birthday by sharing a cake with her friends.

Bransby Horses rescued Ebony as a foal in 1992 when she was found wandering the streets of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

A charity spokesman said it was not clear if the mare had escaped from a field or been abandoned, but when no one claimed her she received “all the love and care she needed” from Bransby staff.

During her younger years Ebony was trained to pull a small cart to help with her weight management, and the mare was also one of the charity’s “sponsorship stars” for many years.

“Ebony only has a few teeth and needs her feed adjusted for this so that she can continue to eat well. She needs more than one rug to keep her warm and dry because a mule’s coat is not as waterproof as a horse’s.”

‘After eight long years’ elderly rescue mare finds new home in time for Christmas

An elderly rescue pony who spent eight years in the care of a welfare charity has finally found a home, just in time for Christmas.

In 2013 Wish was rescued with three others from Manmoel Common in South Wales. The “nervous” mare, then 14 years old, was heavily pregnant and struggling with a “very painful” abscess in her jaw, which required her to have a tooth removed.

A Bransby spokesman said two weeks after her rescue, Wish gave birth to healthy colt Whisper, but the following weeks were “not easy” for the mare as she cared for him and struggled to put on weight. Whisper later found a home, but Wish remained at the charity where staff continued to work with her to build up her confidence.

“After eight long years of searching for the right home for Wish, it was love at first sight for Cat, who needed a companion pony for her mare, Pearl,” said the spokesman.

“Every team member who worked with Wish during her many years with the charity is over the moon to know she has settled in well with her new fosterer.”

Cat said the second she saw Wish’s “cheeky face” she fell in love instantly.

“Within a few days of her arrival she became best friends with Pearl and although nervous at the start, she could be persuaded to do anything for a treat,” she said.

“Wish has been with us now for just a little more than a month and has turned into a cheeky little monkey. She canters around the field with Pearl and pulls out electric fencing to have her own personal mud bath – we know it’s her from the trail of tiny hoofprints.

“She has come on leaps and bounds since we have been handling her every day. She is the sweetest, cheekiest pony we could have ever wished for and I so hope she will be with us for many years to come.”

Bransby visitor centre team leader Shell Craven added that Wish was a “very sweet” pony, who was lovely to care for.

“She would get nervous in some unknown situations but always trusted us to support her. It felt for ever waiting for her to find a home but we are so happy she’s found the perfect home and it was worth the wait.”

‘Best of the best’: two police horses who served together meet up to enjoy retirement

A police horse who patrolled Manchester city after the arena bombings in 2017 – and an equine colleague — have retired together to Bransby Horses.

The charity welcomed 18-year-old Irish draught Captain in July, and this week he was joined by 17-year-old Irish sport horse Steele.

Captain started his career with Humberside Police and when the force’s mounted unit closed, he transferred to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), in 2013.

“Although Captain was already a police horse, GMP was a bit of a jump for him; coming to such a busy bustling city with two major league football teams. Regardless of this massive change, he soon showed his bottle and quickly became one of our steadfast, best of the best police horses,” said officer Kate Garside.

“A gentle giant to handle and a firm favourite with grooms and officers, he was a pleasure to work with in and around the stables and out on the streets.”

Captain led Manchester City football club victory parades and attended derby matches and various protests. He also served during European football fixtures including Manchester City v Feeynoor.

“At this fixture Captain led 6,000 Dutch fans marching from Manchester city centre to Old Trafford. During the march fans set off industrial fireworks while chanting under bridges and banging drums. Captain continued to lead the march with everything going on while also offering support to mutual aid horses from other forces, showing them exactly how it’s done,” said Ms Gardside.

“It is safe to say nothing fazed Captain. So much so that every officer at the unit has done some form of big event with him. He is so trustworthy and brilliant with every rider, regardless of experience. He was also ridden a lot by new officers so he could show them the ropes.”

Steele, who regularly worked alongside Captain, joined the force in 2010 aged six.

“Steele was described by his handlers as being ‘in a league of his own’; brave, very athletic, affectionate, intelligent and funny, though he could be feisty following a difficult start in life,” said a Bransby spokesman.

“Following nine years of service including attendance at extraordinary scenes such as patrolling the city in the aftermath of the Manchester Arena bombing, Manchester Pride, Parklife Festival and the first major potential terrorist evacuation of Manchester United football club, Steele has retired earlier than expected due to failing eyesight.”

Bransby Horses external welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson said the charity is “very lucky” to welcome the geldings.

“We hope they enjoy a very long and happy retirement with us,” she said.

Memorial plaques vandalised and money stolen from welfare charity wishing well

Bransby Horses has been targeted by thieves who stole from a wishing well and vandalised memorial plaques in a “heartbreaking” attack.

A spokesman for the Lincoln-based charity said the theft from the well occurred between 11 and 14 July, while the vandalism to the plaques – 13 of which were damaged – was during a “spate” of occasions during the past few weeks.

“Many people know we have a wishing well on site near our children’s play park and we encourage visitors to donate spare change and make a wish. We are sad to report the contents of our wishing well was recently stolen. The incident took place while we were closed to the public so there is also the issue of trespassing, both of which have been reported to the police,” said the spokesman.

“Not only is it distressing to know someone would go to these lengths to steal from a charity, but the spare change people toss into the well soon adds up and provides essential funding to help us continue our work rescuing and rehabilitating equines in need.”

The spokesman said the plaques are a way for the charity’s supporters to remember loved ones and provide somewhere special to visit.

“We discovered some of the plaques had been kicked down while others have been scratched, rendering the inscriptions illegible. It is heartbreaking to know someone has attacked these plaques. There is a cost involved to fix or replace them and as you can imagine, this completely unforeseen spending will have an impact on finances,” he said.

“Bransby Horses has and will continue to contact those affected by the damage and fix or replace any damaged plaques. We are taking steps to discourage any further acts of vandalism. It goes without saying that we are deeply saddened by these events and are treating the matter seriously, working with the police.”

A popular rescue horse known fondly as a “loveable brute” by staff at Bransby Horses for his mischievous nature, has been put down aged 10 after developing colic.

“Rock star” Ferguson was taken in by the charity as a two-year-old colt in 2013 after he was discovered wandering on common land with painful overgrown hooves and severe sores covering his legs. He immediately received veterinary and farriery treatment at Bransby‘s Walklands Farm and was later gelded.

A spokesman for the charity said Ferguson became friends with Dom and Oscar and was “very much the leader” of the cob herd.

“He knew his own mind and didn’t shy away from letting everyone know it, often giving our teams and his field friends the run around with his rebellious nature,” he said.

“Revered for his devilishly good looks, he was given his ‘rock star’ moniker by his handlers, but was also nicknamed ‘Ferg’, ‘Fer-goose’ and ‘Goose’ – and was only referred to in full when he was up to mischief. His tresses were his trademark, sporting a long flowing mane or a low maintenance, yet stylish Mohawk.”

The gelding had a “close connection” with Louise Hanson, deputy team leader of Bransby’s Barlings site.

“I handled him during my five years at Walklands. He was always a bit of a brute, but a lovable brute. I was leading him in from the field one day and there was a big puddle, instead of walking through it, he did the biggest jump over it, and it was at that point I was smitten with him” said Louise.

“He loved attention and food; he really enjoyed the summer fair when the public doted on him, so it seemed appropriate that he then became a sponsorship star.”

The spokesman added Ferguson was a “cheeky chap” and “full of character” which made him very popular with visitors.

“Walklands Farm has been closed to visitors since lockdown, so while he hadn’t enjoyed many human visitors in the past year, he still got up to plenty of mischief with Dom and Oscar,” said the spokesman.

Royal backing for 10,000-rider relay

An epic fundraising relay featuring more than 10,000 riders kicks off this weekend and has attracted a royal supporter.

The Duchess of Cornwall has been announced as the patron of the Great Horses for Health Relay 2021. The event starts on Sunday (2 May) in Yorkshire and will take place in 11 regions of the UK over five months. Participants have two weeks to choose their own routes in their local areas, which will be recorded on a map, and the relay “baton” will be passed to the next region at a pre-arranged Covid-safe event.

The relay is the brainchild of rider Sophie Gifford, who came up with the idea during lockdown. The event aims to highlight how horses can have a positive impact on mental health, while raising funds for equine charities HorseWorld, Redwings, Hope Pastures, HorseBack UK, Bransby Horses, North Wales Horse Watch and the Riding for the Disabled Association.

“We are incredibly grateful to HRH the Duchess of Cornwall for accepting the invitation to become our patron. As a keen equestrian herself, Her Royal Highness understands how horses can help have a positive impact on our wellbeing,” said Sophie.

“To have the duchess as our patron is also a huge boost for our equine charities, which have struggled through Covid and are in need of support to continue their vital work.”

Sophie is being supported by a group of volunteers, and a team from HorseWorld in organising the relay. The event is open to all “horse lovers” and people can ride, carriage drive or take part with horses in hand. Individuals can also cycle or walk.

Whispering Willows sanctuary owner banned after 137 horses removed and two put down

The owner of a sanctuary from which 137 horses were removed after concerns were raised for their welfare has been banned from keeping horses for a decade.

Sandra Jane Kaverneng-Stolp, known as Sandra Stolp, who ran the Whispering Willows sanctuary, pleaded guilty to causing suffering to animals in her care.

The 54-year-old, of Derwen Road, Pontardawe, Swansea, pleaded guilty to four offences under the Animal Welfare Act, relating to 22 horses, at Swansea Magistrates’ Court yesterday (15 February).

The 137 horses, found at three sites, were signed over to equine charities in November 2019, after concerns were raised. A multi-agency operation involving the RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, Redwings, the British Horse Society, the Horse Trust, Blue Cross, Bransby Horses, the Mare & Foal Sanctuary and the Donkey Sanctuary was described as an “incredible illustration” of what can be achieved for animal welfare by joint working.

Vets confirmed many of the horses were in poor condition; one estimated that some of them had been suffering for six months or more.

An RSPCA spokesman said: “Photographs shown to the court show hips, spine and ribs clearly visible on some of the horses.

“Unfortunately, two of the horses found during the operation, to which charges relate, had to be put to sleep soon afterwards due to welfare problems. One was found with a high heart rate, low body temperature and with the tail crusted in large volumes of dried faecal material, while another, who was initially found lame and reluctant to move, was later unable to rise despite rehabilitation efforts and had to be put to sleep nine days after being found.”

RSPCA inspector Keith Hogben said looking after so many horses properly is a “huge challenge”.

“Sadly, when things went wrong, these horses suffered the consequences,” he said.

“Vets were clear that the conditions many of these horses were kept in was not appropriate with unsuitable grazing — 22 animals suffered because they were not given the care they needed by this sanctuary.

“We’re so grateful to the other equine organisations who supported this partnership operation. It’s an incredible illustration of what we can achieve together for animal welfare.

“It was a huge undertaking; and their assistance with boarding, transportation and administration has been invaluable in helping these equines in their hour of need. Thankfully, it has meant many of these horses will get a second chance of happiness.”

The court heard in mitigation Stolp was struggling financially to care for the more than 100 horses in her care.

She admitted that her failure to adequately explore and address the poor condition or injury of 22 horses led them to suffer unnecessarily.

She was banned from keeping all horses for 10 years and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs and a £90 victim surcharge. She must serve a 20-week curfew, during which she will wear a tag, and must not leave her home between 9pm and 6am.

Many of the horses have since been rehomed.

H&H speaks to leading equine welfare charities about the challenges of 2020 — and what they believe may be to come for the sector in the months and years ahead

REHOMING figures were up in 2020 – but welfare charities fear the financial consequences of the pandemic could create a “perfect storm”, and more welfare cases.

Charities reported an “unusual” year, but say there were positives such as the Government plans to ban live export for slaughter (news, 10 December) and new microchipping laws (news, 6 August).

Seven welfare charities united to produce a report, Britain’s Horse Problem, and recommendations on how to fix it.

But World Horse Welfare CEO Roly Owers told H&H despite the challenges, the charity has a “spring in its step” and rehomed a record 340 equines this year.

“To date, 257 equines have come into our care this year, including several multi-agency rescues,” he said. “But we are steeling ourselves for a surge in welfare cases as we head into winter and the true grip of economic fallout of the pandemic.”

RSPCA equine welfare expert Mark Kennedy told H&H the charity did not see a “significant increase” in welfare cases this year, and rehoming figures exceeded 2019, but the charity is “very worried” about the future.

“We anticipate a perfect storm where many more horses fall into neglect and suffering at the same time as our own and partners’ resources are ever more stretched,” he said.

“A joint National Equine Welfare Council and Association of Dogs and Cats Homes survey of members and other animal rescue organisations, in May, found more than half those surveyed reported a drop of more than 50% in their income, with equine organisations reporting the greatest decrease and most pessimistic about their long-term financial survival.”

Redwings CEO Lynn Cutress told H&H that owing to a loss of income during the pandemic and no Government support for animal charities, Redwings will be operating at a deficit for months, or potentially years.

“However, our commitment to be there for the horses in the most desperate need hasn’t wavered. We’ve taken in nearly 180 horses and donkeys this year, including from other sanctuaries struggling financially. This is one of our largest intakes in recent years, and with the threat of recession, there’s real concern that demand for help from equine welfare charities will continue to rise,” she said.

“The new microchipping law was another important step in supporting better horse welfare in this country. We look forward to working with fellow welfare organisations to continue to raise awareness and push for change.”

Bransby Horses’ welfare team responded to more than 200 welfare concerns this year.

“Looking ahead to 2021 we will be concentrating on increasing rehoming figures and the number of horses impacted through our external welfare work, continuing to build on collaborative relationships with other charities,” said a spokesman.

The legacy of a youngster who “lost his fight to live” a week after being rescued will live on in a welfare charity’s hearts.

Bransby Horses became involved in a welfare case in 2017 when field officers were called out to three horses living in inappropriate conditions, with limited access to water or food. One horse was tethered, underweight and needed farriery attention.

A charity spokesman said that after locating an owner, the field officers discovered the horse was under veterinary care and so the charity worked with the owner to improve the condition of the horses.

“We supported the owner for months with a feeding plan and regular visits, which happily resulted in all three equines’ welfare improving,” he said.

“The owner had engaged [with us] and completed all requested improvements, and there were no longer any welfare concerns. One of the mares in the herd had also foaled a beautiful colt, and all was well. Our team was naturally happy with the positive outcome.”

The spokesman said the charity’s team continued to monitor the herd over the next few months and was satisfied with the owner’s “new ways of working”, resulting in the case being closed with no further concerns raised by the public.

“Sadly the story doesn’t end there,” said the spokesman. “A year later one of our field officers became aware of a collapsed equine. On arrival it quickly became apparent this was the same herd from the year before. The owner had moved them to new surroundings and the level of care for the equines had seriously diminished.

“The youngster was in serious need of veterinary intervention. The RSPCA came to support us with a vet, who deemed the horse was suffering, and he was removed under the Animal Welfare Act.”

The spokesman said the youngster was transported to Bransby’s intensive care unit and named Peter, after the charity’s founder Peter Hunt as it was the anniversary of his death.

“Peter received round-the-clock care while the staff and vets fought tirelessly to save him,” he said.

“Unfortunately due to pneumonia, combined with a high worm burden and severe lice infestation, Peter lost his fight to live. Peter was only with us for one week but touched the hearts of everyone who met him and he’ll never be forgotten.”

An RSPCA investigation was launched, and Bransby worked with the charity to deliver a “successful outcome” in court.

“The owner pleaded guilty to failing to investigate and address the cause of a poor body condition and weight loss. They were given a community order and ordered to pay costs,” said the spokesman.

“They were also disqualified from owning or keeping horses for 10 years and ordered to sign over any remaining equines into the care of Bransby Horses.”

Bransby welcomed Peter’s dam, named Dora by the charity, and the other horses Diego and Alicia.

“Finally they were safe and would receive the love and care they deserved,” said the spokesman.

“Diego and Alicia were underweight when they came to us but Dora was getting rounder by the day. It was soon apparent she was in foal. In 2019 we welcomed beautiful Boots. She captured our hearts the second we saw her. Peter never got to live the life that Boots will, but he will live for ever in her legacy and our hearts.”

Leading UK equine welfare charities have created a report looking into what can no longer be called a horse crisis, as it has become the norm. They have also made recommendations on how to resolve the problems. H&H finds out more

SEVEN welfare charities have joined forces to report on the “dire state” of the UK’s horse crisis – and offer solutions to the “broken system” that has caused it.

World Horse Welfare, Blue Cross, Bransby Horses, British Horse Society, Horseworld, Redwings and the RSPCA published the report, Britain’s Horse Problem, which highlights the fact more responsible ownership, rules and enforcement are needed to “break the cycle of suffering”.

It states that the situation in England and Wales can no longer be described as a horse “crisis”, as it has been persistent for so long, arising after the 2008 financial crisis and continuing unabated. Reports in 2012 and 2013 set out the situation, along with recommendations of actions the public, Government, agencies and charities should take to address it.

“While equine charities have taken in thousands of horses each year since these reports were published, horses are being put at risk at least at the same pace as we are collectively able to rescue them,” reads this month’s report.

“Like trying to drain a bath with the taps still on, no matter how much water escapes down the drain, the water level remains unchanged.”

The report states that work must start now on reforming the system if we are to learn from history; the recession expected as a result of the coronavirus is “likely to cause the welfare ‘bath’ to overflow”.

The report covers the way the pandemic has affected welfare charities and is expected to create significantly more issues, at a time when charities are least able to cope with them, “against a backdrop of a ‘broken system’ which allows thousands of horses to become at risk of suffering each year”.

Entrepreneur and rescue horse owner Deborah Meaden said: “Issues such as overbreeding, neglect, accidental breeding and the ever-rising cost of keeping a horse have all combined to create the perfect storm for the equine world.

“We all need to pull together to help the plight of vulnerable horses, ponies and donkeys who will fall victim to the new layer of problems the equine world faces in the months and years to come. I think it is all our responsibility to care and help these animals whether we are horse owners or not.”

The reports sets out progress in the past six years, such as the introduction of the Control of Horses Act and changes to equine ID laws. There has been more investment in human behaviour change-related approaches by welfare charities, and organisations are taking a multi-agency approach to welfare.

But members of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) take in more than 2,000 horses every year. Space is limited and some smaller charities have either folded or merged with larger organisations.

The report states that inadequate enforcement of legislation is partly to blame for the situation, as this allows abusers to offend “systematically”. It adds that if new equine ID legislation is properly enforced, which it has not been in the past, this could go a long way towards fixing the system. The Animal Welfare Act must also be better enforced, the report authors believe – Defra estimates that 111 of 343 local authorities have no animal welfare inspectors, partly because councils have never had any funding specifically for enforcing the Act.

Roly Owers, chief executive of World Horse Welfare, which led the coalition producing the report, said: “With such a challenging winter ahead, now is the time to highlight to the public and Government that we see a grim equine welfare storm brewing, and that we urgently need support to cope with it.

“It is as important as ever to better tackle the root causes of this systemic scourge and change the system to better protect horses and to truly hold owners to account.”

Horse owners and the public are also asked to consider their own responsibilities when caring for their animals or giving to rescue charities.

“If you are struggling with horse ownership, reach out to a charity who may be able to help offer support and guidance before the problem spirals out of control,” Mr Owers said.

“We also urge members of the public to give to reputable welfare charities this winter but do your homework. Is the rescue organisation a genuine charity? Do they meet basic welfare standards for the animals they care for? A little consideration before you give can make sure you have the impact you want.”

The report states that owners must recognise the situation, and their role in it, and that welfare organisations should develop educational campaigns to improve care of horses.

It also recommends mandatory licensing of animal welfare establishments, and of breeders, dealers and livery yards.

“Everyone is responsible for fixing the broken system behind poor equine welfare in Britain,” it concludes. “Including owners, breeders, dealers, Government, landowners, local authorities, equine vets and rescue organisations.”

A welfare charity has said a “heart-breaking goodbye” to two of its “most popular and well-loved residents”, a retired police horse and award-winning rescue mare.

Bransby Horses paid tribute to 24-year-old former police horse Justice and eight-year-old mare Emerald, who were put down last month.

A Bransby spokesman said 17.1hh Justice arrived in December 2010 from Greater Manchester Police and became a “firm favourite” by everyone who met him.

“Justice’s calm and kind nature won many hearts,” he said.

“Despite his large stature, which also meant he was incredibly handsome, he was always easy to handle.”

Rosanna Elliott Hart, acting head of external welfare, said: “I remember taking a group of scouts on a tour at the visitor centre. Everyone was very excited when we got to Justice and he was straight over to say hello.

“It was a cold day so everyone was wrapped up to keep warm but as we were talking about some of the work we do Justice decided that was the perfect moment to pluck a woolly hat from the head of a small scout and walk off with it. The children were all laughing hysterically and asking him to take their hats and scarves too! He was such a character who will be very missed.”

The spokesman said the gelding unexpectedly began to show some “unusual behaviour” earlier in the year and an assessment revealed he had developed a neurological issue.

“The team and vets continued to monitor him, but as his condition couldn’t be improved they made the decision to euthanase him this October. The team were greatly saddened by such a sudden turn of events, but knew his best interest was at heart. Having been on site for many years and a very popular ‘sponsor star’ for much of that, he is going to be sorely missed.”

Bransby farm manager Rachel Jenkinson said Justice was a “special gent”.

“I always have a soft spot for those that have served. He had a wonderful retirement with us and was surrounded by friends both horse and human. He was another great ambassador and legend of Bransby,” she said.

The spokesman said 14.2hh mare Emerald became a “treasured” member of the charity’s family following her arrival in 2016, along with Amethyst, Peridot, Diamond and Tanzanite.

“On arrival, Emerald was extremely poorly requiring 24-hour care at our animal reception centre (ARC). She was visibly emaciated, had a body condition score of 0.5 and was unable to stand unaided,” he said.

“The ARC team cared for Emerald around the clock, lifting her by hand with a special harness every few hours until she had the strength to stand alone.”

Emerald won the “back from the brink” category at the 2017 Animal Hero Awards following her rescue.

“After spending months at the ARC being nursed back to good health, Emerald and her friends joined the visitor centre yard where they spent time charging around the field having a great time and making lots of mess,” said the spokesman.

“She had physio to improve the movement in her joints and the team spent time working on her handling and she soon progressed and developed into a well-behaved mare. Although she had ongoing lameness and pain relief to keep her comfortable, to our surprise, she was quite often caught zooming around her field when she was feeling on form.”

The spokesman said the welfare team continued to monitor the mare’s ongoing lameness and dental issues throughout her time at the charity.

“Unfortunately her pain was increasing significantly, alongside a growing difficulty to eat,” he said.

Shell Craven, team leader at the visitor centre, said the mare’s absence will be noticed and the charity will miss her “terribly.”

“The big girl herd won’t be the same without her and her crazy moments,” she said.

Heartbreak as ‘mischievous’ Shetland who delighted visitors put down

A rescued Shetland pony whose “mischievous and cheeky” behaviour made her a firm favourite with visitors and staff at Bransby Horses has been put down, aged 20, after 18 years with the charity.

Twiggy was taken into Bransby’s care in 2002 when she was found injured and foaling at the side of a road. While Twiggy’s foal did not survive, the mare became one of the charity’s “most popular” long-term residents after life-saving treatment.

“She proved so popular she was made a ‘sponsorship star’ that supporters could sponsor for £36 a year to help with her care, and that of her fellow 336 equines at the charity’s two sites,” said a Bransby spokesman.

As Twiggy grew older her health deteriorated and at the end of 2019 she was suffering with dental issues, with diastemas (large gaps) forming between her teeth trapping decaying food.

“Sadly despite receiving the very best care from our expert team, including regular dental treatments, her dental issues steadily deteriorated during 2020,” said the spokesman.

“At an assessment last month it was clear Twiggy’s dental issues were no longer responding to treatment, and there were concerns the pain relief she was being given wasn’t having the desired effect.”

The spokesman said the charity made the difficult decision to put the mare down knowing that she would struggle to cope with winter because her dental issues made it difficult for her to chew hay.

Bransby Horses visitor centre team leader Michelle Craven said having spent so much time with the mare, it “breaks her heart” that Twiggy is no longer with them.

“She was simply the most wonderful Shetland pony you can imagine and became a firm favourite with our supporters over the years as one of our nine sponsorship stars,” she said.

“There are countless tales of her mischievous side, which she regularly demonstrated to staff and visitors at our site, and she will be hugely missed.”

Michelle said while it’s never easy to say goodbye, as a welfare charity Bransby’s founding principle is doing what is best for the horse every time.

“Sometimes sadly this means putting a horse to sleep in order to avoid them suffering any further pain or distress,” she said. “It fills me with happiness however to know that thanks to the public’s generosity, we were able to provide Twiggy with 18 years of love and care, ensuring she lived the most comfortable and happy life possible while she was with us.”

The spokesman added ahead of winter the charity is reminding owners of the importance of proper dental care for horses.

“We know from speaking with owners that in some cases people don’t always keep to the same dental routine with older horses as they might for younger horses. Unfortunately that can sometimes lead to issues such as dental disease developing,” said Lara Gosling, Bransby veterinary surgeon.

“Proper dental care is an essential routine for a healthy horse and can add a significant number of years to a horse’s life.”

Major equine welfare charity to remain closed to the public until 2021 H&H Plus

Despite visitor attractions being allowed to open from 4 July, some welfare charities have decided to remain shut so they can focus their efforts on caring for the equines in their charge. H&H finds out which centres are now opened with Covid-19 secure measures in place and which are delaying reopening until a later date...

As the equestrian world focuses on a new normal, some charities are reopening to visitors – but others will remain closed as the impact of Covid-19 means they must prioritise resources.

Under step three of the Government’s guidance on easing lockdown restrictions, visitor attractions may open from 4 July.

The Horse and Pony Protection Association’s Shores Hey Farm has reopened with restrictions, and Bransby Horses reopens on 8 July – but World Horse Welfare, the Horse Trust, the Donkey Sanctuary and Redwings remain closed.

Bransby announced changes including additional picnic fields and a click-and-collect café service, and visitors cannot touch horses.

“We’ve been working hard to ensure new hygiene and social distancing measures are implemented in a way that still allow our supporters to enjoy a memorable visit,” said Bransby chief executive Jo Snell.

Meanwhile World Horse Welfare’s four visitor centres will not open until February 2021.

“While we love having visitors, this adds additional risk in terms of keeping our centres ‘Covid-secure’. The protective measures we would need to put in place would also inevitably involve taking valuable time from staff to ensure measures were being followed,” said Roly Owers, World Horse Welfare chief executive.

“The charity’s priority over the coming months has to be rehabilitation and rehoming, as each horse that is rehomed makes space for another. With all four farms at full capacity, making space for the large number of welfare cases expected later is vital.”

Mr Owers added the charity is “very mindful” about the financial implications of remaining closed, but said it is a matter of priorities.

“The pandemic is having a significant financial impact across all our income sources, including fundraising events cancelled and delays in receiving the gifts left to us in wills,” he said.

“On the upside, while we were not able to rehome horses for a few weeks, we have now rehomed more in 2020 than at this point last year, and legacy income is beginning to pick up again, so through juggling priorities we should be able to cope with the inevitable challenges that lie ahead.”

Jeanette Allen, chief executive of the Horse Trust which is shut to the public until at least September, agreed being closed has had a financial impact.

“The closure will have cost in the region of £80,000 to £100,000 in lost income from entries, the tea room, merchandise sales and hiring our barn for events,” she said. “On top of that we will lose the less easily quantifiable support from visitors choosing to sponsor a horse, pony or donkey having met them.

“We are still battling with lower than usual staffing levels as a result of the pandemic so bringing horses in and out of stables for opening is not essential but is a strain on resources, and caring for them is of course where we are focusing those resources. Every organisation will make decisions that are suitable for their visitor experience.”

Redwings said its reopening situation is “under review” and the Donkey Sanctuary will remain temporarily closed.

Godsend for charities as brokers award grants

Charities facing tough times have received a share of more than £50,000 – describing the money as a “godsend”.

The SEIB Giving virtual awards, for small and medium charities, had been due to be announced in London on 20 March but owing to the coronavirus pandemic were held online in daily videos from 30 March to 3 April. Following nominations by the public, 10 charities – of which six were equine charities – made it to the final stage of voting decided by SEIB customers. Each charity received a share of the £50,500 pot towards their projects – and, for this year, towards running costs, in light of the financial impact of COVID-19.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary and Bransby Horses each received £15,000 after the voting resulted in a tie for top spot. Gaddesden Place Riding for the Disabled received £5,000, the Horse Trust £4,000, Hope Pastures £1,000 and the Flicka Foundation £1,000. Doris Banham Dog Rescue was awarded £7,000 and children’s charity Once Upon a Smile £2,000. Canine charity Hope Rescue, and the South Essex Wildlife Hospital each received £250.

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress said the charity was “delighted”.

“As we are a charity 100% funded by donations from the public, this generous grant will go a long way towards caring for our 1,500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules,” she said.

Sally Crawford of Bransby, whose site near Lincoln was affected by flooding in November last year, said the award was incredible.

“Working since the floods has been tougher than usual, and although the waters have finally subsided, the fallout from the devastation continues,” she said.

“The money we’ve been awarded will go towards purchasing a Kubota vehicle which we can use at our Barlings site, where more than 50 horses and ponies have been moved as a result of our land being ravaged by floods,” she said.

Doris Banham Dog Rescue founder Trudie James described the money as a “godsend”.

“I would have loved to buy some kennels but I will have to use it for running costs to keep our dogs safe during this [lockdown] period,” she said.

SEIB marketing manager Nicolina MacKenzie said charities are facing “tough times”.

“We have been determined make sure our finalists receive their grants, but also have the opportunity for publicity through our virtual awards,” she commented.

Calling all ‘stamp snippers’: Bransby Horses’ plea for vital volunteers

Have you ever thought, while slogging through the mud in the dark of a Monday morning in January, whether you’d have been better off taking up stamp-collecting instead of riding?

Well now you can do both – sort of. A grateful equine charity has been so inundated with donations of used stamps it is on the hunt for vital volunteer “stamp snippers” to cope with the influx.

Lincoln-based Bransby Horses charity said it has had huge numbers of “kind donations” of used postage stamps in the past few weeks, which are sold to raise funds.

“We need more hands to help trim them before selling them to raise funds for our welfare work with horses, ponies, donkeys and mules,” said a Bransby spokesman.

“These used stamps help the team give equines a second chance at a happy and healthy life.”

The spokesman added the stamps are vital to the charity.

“They bring in much-needed funds, especially at this time when we are recovering from the severe flooding in November 2019,” he said.

“If you are wondering about how much impact used stamps can have, in the last 90 days, we have raised £9,780 solely from selling donated used stamps on to collectors.”

Executive assistant Paul Sharp said the charity has “incredible” supporters who have sent lots of stamps in recent weeks.

“It must be all the Christmas post which has been coming through people’s letterboxes. Whilst we are dealing with the aftermath of the flooding, tasks like these are difficult for us to undertake but are so important,” he said.

“We are looking for volunteers to help cut around the edges of stamps and while this role takes time, it is such a vital role in turning sacks of stamps into funding. If you have used stamps please think of us before you bin them, as every single one we are sent makes huge difference to us. Please keep them coming.”

‘Heavy hearts’ at Bransby Horses as long-term friend put down

Tributes have been paid to a “much-loved” long-term Bransby Horses resident who was put down aged 19.

Jigily arrived at the welfare charity in 2004 after being diagnosed with wobbler’s syndrome, the common name for the neurological disease occurring when incorrectly formed vertebrae in the neck pinch the spinal cord, when his owner was no longer able to care for him.

A spokesman for the charity said it was with “heavy hearts” the 14.2hh gelding was put down on 6 December owing to health issues.

“Jigily has been a much-loved member of the Bransby Horses family,” he said.

“During his 15 years here he was most likely seen near the visitor centre or main yard, happy to have a scratch and a stroke from visitors coming to see him. He also loved to see what staff were up to, by following them around and peering at what they were doing.”

Visitor centre team leader Shell Craven said saying goodbye to Jigily was “particularly difficult” for her as the gelding was a long-term resident and a “firm favourite” of staff, supporters and visitors.

“Losing him is tough but we have lots of great memories and he had a good life with us,” she said. “Thank you to staff and supporters for your kind words and thoughts, in person and through social media; as always, it means so much.

“The team is so good at coming together to support one another, especially in difficult times like this. Knowing we can make a difference to the lives of hundreds of horses like Jigily makes this job more than worthwhile.”

The spokesman added that former horses and ponies of the charity will never be forgotten.

“Like all those who have left our family in 2019, we all take time to remember them and their wonderful personalities,” he said.

“Jigily had a good life and that is entirely thanks to the support given to us over the years, support that has meant we can do our job, giving them the best care possible.”

Bransby Horses thanks ‘kind souls’ for their support with festive mini-film

Bransby Horses has released an emotive Christmas mini-film to thank its supporters in the aftermath of severe flooding.

The five-minute film was written by Bransby marketing manager, Alex Kinnear-Mellor, narrated by her father Richard Kinnear and filmed and edited by graphic design assistant Joe Wass. It stars equine welfare assistant Lauren May and Sophie, one of the charity’s equine adoption stars.

A spokesman for the charity said it had received “amazing support” following the flooding that hit the Lincolshire centre in November after torrential rainfall, taking away the use of 40% of its land.

“Support has been coming in by way of donations of money, items and time, which has given the charity a much-needed leg up at this difficult time,” he said.

“The yard and support teams wanted to show their appreciation ahead of Christmas and convey just how much the support means to them and the equines they care for.”

Alex said the charity wanted to create a film that had the staff’s “amazing” work ethic at its heart.

“This is never more evident than at this festive time of year when they come into work on Christmas Day, always putting our donkeys, horses, ponies and mules before themselves,” she said.

“We also wanted to celebrate our supporters who are equally as incredible, spending their Christmas gift budgets, donating pre-loved items and buying objects from our Amazon wishlist, as well as volunteering.”

Alex said the charity is “blown away” by the sheer volume of “kind souls” who help keep Bransby going.

“We hope everyone likes our film, made on a very modest budget but with bucketloads of heart,” she said.

The spokesman added that the charity’s challenges are by “no means over” but said it is 15% towards raising an additional £200,000 target needed to move horses and ponies to its site at Barlings soon.

“As well as financial donations, the charity has received offers of help from individuals who can spare a few hours to volunteer, like-minded charities, and big-hearted organisations from the area and further afield,” he said.

A heartbroken charity still feeling the effects of severe flooding is appealing for “friendly faces” to continue visiting the site.

Bransby Horses in Lincolshire was heavily affected by flooding when drain valves were closed to save thousands of homes from flooding. Of the 1,000 equines in the charity’s care, 100, had to be urgently moved to temporary dry areas, with plans to move them to the Bransby’s Barlings site in Langworth.

The valves have been re-opened but a spokesman for the charity said it is welcoming a “fraction of the number” of visitors it has done over the past few years, believed to be because people assume the site is closed.

“Despite the damage, the visitor centre, shop and café have been totally unaffected by the flooding and continue to trade as usual,” said the spokesman.

“The charity has an amazing selection of baubles and Christmas gifts that would normally be flying off the shelves. The award-winning café continues to serve a selection of winter warmers and other tasty treats.”

Visitor engagmement manager Holly Hart said it was “heartbreaking” to see the visitor centre so empty.

“Normally at this time of year we are busy selling our winter gifts and the café would be full of people, but with visitor numbers so low, we stand to lose even more money from the floods,” she said.

Events and activities including a rug and tack sale have been cancelled in order to focus on welcoming visitors to the site day-to-day.

“The charity will be giving refunds to those who have booked activities already but are still desperate for people to visit their site for a day out. While some of the land has been severely affected, visitor areas are still open and support is still needed by the charity to continue its work through the winter,” said the spokesman.

Bransby fundraising manager Charlie McCelland said there is “still a tough road ahead”.

“While we are all working hard and getting good support from the local community, we still have a long way to go. Please do visit our website and social media channels to find out more about how to support our mission, so we can continue helping equines who have had a difficult and traumatic start in life,” he said.

“Our gift shop, café and some of our walkways are still open and the teams and animals would love to see visitors. Friendly faces coming in for the day help give us a morale lift during this challenging period. We have faced the worst conditions for many years but together, we can get through it and continue to be there for equines in need.”

The spokesman added that the charity plans to move some of its equines to the Barlings site in the next four to six weeks so the Lincolshire site can be cleared and given time to recover.

“The timeline for moving animals and teams to the site in Langworth was originally the end of 2020, so we have been working hard to raise the money needed to have the right infrastructure in place at the site as soon as possible,” he said.

“The charity has sent out a plea for donations of money, items, time and foster homes and has had a good response so far but the challenge is far from over. The charity will feel the effects of the flood for many months, possibly until the end of 2020.”

A welfare charity that houses more than 450 equines is in “crisis” after it was hit in “life-changing ways” by flooding.

Bransby Horses in Lincolshire suffered devastating levels of flooding following unprecedented rainfall on Friday (8 November).

A spokesman for the charity said drain valves based at the charity to prevent rising water had been closed, as advised by the Environment Agency, to prevent further flooding in Lincoln.

“This arrangement is a long-standing agreement between the Environment Agency and the charity to help protect thousands of homes in and around Lincoln from flooding,” he said.

“The charity fully supports the required actions of the Environment Agency to flood the Till Washland, though this has unfortunately impacted the charity in life-changing ways.”

Bransby Horses chief executive Jo Snell said the charity is in “crisis conditions”, which will have a long term impact for possibly “years to come”.

“We have more than 450 equines on site, of which we have assessed more than 100 will need moving to our site in Barlings within the next four weeks,” she said.

“The current conditions are not sustainable for keeping our animals and staff safe, which of course is, and always will be, our priority.

“The floods have in parts brought and spread human sewage onto our site, and this combined with over four foot of water in places means the land which our animals graze on is fast becoming unsafe.”

Director of equine welfare Emma Carter said the charity is facing “extreme times” and needs all the support it can get.

“We were flooded in 2007, but not to these levels and not with more than 450 horses to keep safe and well,” she said. “We’re currently planning exactly what support we will need and how we can coordinate it, and will communicate this in the coming days. For now our priority is to keep our animals out of the contaminated waters and supplied with clean water, fresh bedding and the nourishment such cold temperatures demand of them.

“As for the long term, while large amounts of our site are still underwater, the future is going to be tough over the coming year. In the next four weeks we will be looking to move 100 equines up to our site in Barlings, Langworth, which we acquired last year. This purchase was made in part for this very contingency however, the site is currently far from being fit for the large number of equines that we need to move with such speed and for the staff required to work there. We will need money and labour to make this a success and to cause as least stress to our horses, donkeys, mules and ponies as possible.”

Director of engagement and income generation, Sally Crawford, added that while some of the charity’s events will be cancelled, the site remains open to the public.

“We’re sure our amazing supporters will understand that they won’t be able to access flood damaged areas. Our supporters are our lifeline and we’re hoping they will keep an eye on our website and Facebook to keep abreast of the events that we are still planning to run including visiting Father Christmas in his Grotto and visiting our gift shop and café,” she said.

Winners of £100,000 grants revealed

SEIB Insurance Brokers’ customers have decided who would be the worthy winners of the company’s annual £100,000 charity awards.

World Horse Welfare was given the top grant of £50,000, while nine other charities that reached the final voting stage received £50,000 between them.

SEIB chief executive Barry Fehler presented World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers with the cheque and commemorative plaque at a ceremony at the Grange City Hotel in London on 22 March.

The charity plans to use the cash for “vital” new equipment including a new tractor, trailer, and a drone with high-resolution camera for helping locate horses in need hard-to-reach locations.

Barry Fehler said: “I have been at the helm of SEIB for over 50 years and it is with great pride that we are able to make these grants totalling £100,000 to projects voted for by our clients.

“I am delighted that since last year, with the support of our owners Ecclesiastical, we have been able to double the sum granted by SEIB to charity”.

More than 1,000 small to medium-sized charities were nominated by the public. From these, shortlisted finalists were invited to submit detailed plans for the grant, before SEIB customers voted on the winner.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary received the runner-up grant of £15,000 which it will use for a “horse hospital treatment room” project and the Welsh Pony Rescue and Rehoming Charitable Trust received £10,000 to be used for their Every Life is Precious project. The Animal Health Trust received £5,000 for its digital X–ray appeal which it is believed could help diagnose orthopaedic conditions.

Bransby Horses and Rescue Welfare, Lindsey Lodge Hospice, James Hopkins Trust, Wildlife Aid Foundation and South Essex Wildlife Hospital received £2,000 each.

Lexie

Rescued by the Mare and Foal Sanctuary, Lexie was just four-months-old when she was hit by a car on Dartmoor and abandoned by her mum, which left her terrified of moving vehicles. Fortunately, her rehomer Mandy Hayley saw that the biggest challenges brought the best rewards.

Mandy explained: “I just knew she was misunderstood. You could see the kindness in her eyes. She just demanded respect and I suspected she would show it in return.

“It took years before Lexie could let a car pass without her shaking with fear, but with time and patience we got there in the end.

“Lexie has taught my three grandchildren to ride, it has been a wonderful experience for them.”

Molly

Redwings rescue Molly, a Thoroughbred cross, was rehomed to her guardian Jess. Together, the pair have gone from strength to strength, competing in novice level team chasing (not for the faint-hearted!), dressage and showjumping as well as representing Redwings in rescue classes at Equifest last year.

Zeus arrived at Bransby Horses with a severe lice infestation and was still entire, but his loving nature shone through and he became a firm favourite with staff and his rehomer Ellen.

Ellen said: “When I first read Stanley’s story on the Bransby Horses’ website, I instantly fell in love with him. He was looking for a relaxed retirement home and I already had Oscar, an old Shetland, who was looking for a friend.

“Stanley came to live with us in 2015 and they instantly got on very well. Oscar seemed to know that we needed to look after Stanley. They were inseparable — they enjoyed going for walks, talking to everybody that came to the yard, and more importantly eating!”

Louie

Rehomed from the RSPCA, Louie instantly caught rehomer Tommy’s eye: “It sounds crazy but I was just so sure about him, I phoned straight away and spoke to a rehoming officer, arranged to meet Louie, and that was that!

“Before I knew it he was home, and all those expensive event horses I had tried out before were out of my mind forever.”

Tommy started Louie’s in-hand training, taking him out showing and teaching him to work on the lunge.

Tommy said: “As Louie gets a little older and more confident, I will look to start backing him, and my hope is that he’ll blossom into an amazing little riding pony for my niece. I can’t wait to see what the future brings for us both!”

Lucas

Lucas was discovered at just 10-months-old in a freezing field with his emaciated mother and rescued by World Horse Welfare. Fortunately, he thrived in the charity’s care and was ready for rehoming as a two-year-old, which is when he met rehomer Colleen.

She said: “To be honest, it was love at first sight! I was searching for a horse that would be a general all-rounder and happy to compete across various disciplines. I wanted a youngster who seemed bright, curious and willing to learn.”

Colleen started his education under saddle and from there they went from strength to strength.

“Lucas and I take part in everything; hes been very successful in the working hunter ring, always jumping fabulous clear rounds. We’ve made our British Eventing debut with two BE80 runs and last year he participated in his first ever TREC competition where he went on to win his section at the Scottish Championships.”

I couldn’t write this article without mentioning my very own rescue, Billy. A Quarter Horse who we rescued from slaughter while living in France, and he made the journey to the UK with us when we relocated. Now almost 22-years-old, he is still my horse of a lifetime.

Despite being unbroken when he first came home and me being a small child, he became a fantastic all-rounder, taking me to the Trailblazer finals, winning school showjumping leagues and patiently tolerating many a fancy-dress costume over the years.

Trailer thefts prevent charity from rescuing more horses

A welfare charity has issued an urgent appeal for information after two trailers were stolen.

Two Ifor Williams HB610 trailers, one green and one blue, were stolen from Bransby Horses, in Bransby, Lincoln, on Sunday evening (14 October) at around 7pm. The blue trailer has been recovered from the West Yorkshire area but the green trailer remains missing.

Head of external welfare Ryan Rouse said: “Any break-in understandably leaves a tainted emotion, but to have such vital equipment stolen is devastating. The knock-on effect means that in the short term at least, we are unable to fully complete the charity’s core value of rescue.

“The blue trailer has been altered with a winch so collapsed horses could be moved quickly and safely when manpower alone simply isn’t enough. We are so fortunate to have had this trailer as a direct result of our supporters’ kind generosity. I really hope we are able to move forward quickly from this sad event and get back to normal.”

The charity said the response from the public has been overwhelming.

“One trailer has been recovered and surprisingly appears to be relatively undamaged, although a full assessment will be made before we travel any equines,” said Mr Rouse.

“Despite having the trailers locked at the hitch behind a padlocked gate and a camera directly over the trailers, the charity was still a target for theft. To steal from anybody is simply wrong but to steal from a charity really makes you question the type of people these are. The police have been excellent with their support and also Ifor Williams, who have been incredibly helpful.”

A spokesman for Lincolshire Police said: “We received a report that two trailers have been stolen from Bransby Horses. Access was gained to the yard by grinding the locks off. Bransby Horses is a charity which works hard to raise every penny to support and look after horses, donkeys and mules. The theft of these trailers from a charity is beyond belief and will affect the fantastic work the charity does.

“We appeal to anyone with information that will help our enquiry, whether this is to identify the criminals who stole the horseboxes or to locate the second horsebox to contact us at force.control@lincs.pnn.police.uk, by dialling 101 or alternatively contacting Crimestoppers, which can be anonymous, on 0800 555 111 or on-line at crimestoppers-uk.org. Stallion rescued after ‘endangering lives’ near motorway

A stunning stallion has been rescued after he was found roaming “dangerously” close to a motorway.

Bransby Horses was notified of the loose 14.2hh piebald cob by police, who had been made aware of his whereabouts by members of the public.

He was wandering near the M180 and the A18 in Humberside, “endangering his own life as well as motorists’”.

“He was more than accommodating when caught by the police and seemed to be enjoying his 15 minutes of fame that been generated from his travels,” said a Bransby spokesman.

“Despite the best efforts of police, an owner could not be found so an officer named him Blue because of his blue eye.”

Humberside Roads Police tweeted about discovering Blue and joked that he was a unicorn, as his forelock was standing up in the air when he was rescued.

“The handsome stallion became very excited at the prospect of being chauffeur-driven rather than continuing his journey on foot and travelled back to Bransby Horses well,” said the Bransby spokesman.

On arrival at the centre, Blue showed subtle signs of lameness but otherwise appeared to be well handled and in a good condition.

But on further investigation, Blue was found to have an ulcerated sarcoid on one of his hind legs.

The sarcoid has since been removed via laser surgery and Blue has been gelded. He is now recovering in the charity’s intensive care unit and is making good progress.

“He’s still whinnying and putting his head over the stable door,” said Emma Carter, executive director of equine welfare at Bransby Horses.

“He will need a lot of after-care but his prognosis is really good. He’s a really friendly chap and already a firm favourite here.

“He has a bit of a following now, lots of people have engaged with him. It could have been such a different story with where he was found.”

Once he has come out of intensive care and been wormed, vaccinated and given the all-clear for signs of contagious diseases like strangles, Blue will be introduced to the main area of the sanctuary.

He will be given tailor-made care for his needs alongside the charity’s 426 rescue horses and donkeys.

Blue is thought to be at least 16, although his age is hard to detect due to his well-worn teeth.

“He has had so much going on so we need to give him some time to settle and recover from everything,” said Emma.

“It won’t be until then that we would consider rehoming him as a companion. As he has a low-grade lameness from an old injury and because of his age we won’t be backing him or considering a ridden home.”

19 Shire horses abandoned to face a ‘bleak winter’

A group of 19 abandoned Shire horses abandoned to face a “bleak” winter are now facing a brighter future thanks to a major rescue operation.

Last Friday, (10 November) Redwings Horse Sanctuary, the Blue Cross, Bransby Horses, HorseWorld, World Horse Welfare and the RSPCA joined forces to round up the group, which included four mares with foals at foot.

The owner of the land, in Bewdley, Worcestershire, had called Redwings to report the fly-grazing. Notices were issued under the Control of Horses Act and as the horses remained unclaimed, the charities stepped in.

A Redwings spokesman said: “Following a visit and assessment of the horses by our senior field officer Julie Harding, concerns were also raised for the welfare of the horses with the onset of winter and in light of the youngsters and foals being completely unhandled.

“During the 15-hour rescue operation, all 19 horses were successfully removed.”

Redwings has given homes to four mares, two of which had foals, four horses have been taken in by the RSPCA, three by HorseWorld and two each by the other three charities.

Redwings head of welfare and behaviour Nic de Brauwere said: “It is safe to say that had we not intervened, the welfare of this group would have been at great risk, especially with the approaching winter.

“No provision had been made by the former owner for their ongoing care, nor had the youngsters received any type of handling, owing to a complete lack of basic care.

“This round-up is an example of both the effectiveness of the Control of Horses Act and of successful partnership working among the welfare charities to secure the future of a group of horses, the outlook for whom would otherwise have been extremely concerning”.

Ms Harding added: “I cannot comprehend why such a low value was placed on these beautiful animals to fly-graze them in the first place and then not to come forward to claim them; it really saddens me.

“Thankfully, with our colleagues at our fellow welfare charities, we were able to offer these mares and foals a home where they’ll be treasured.”

HorseWorld’s Sarah Hollister said the charity had offered a home to an older mare.

“She will spend her golden years here at HorseWorld, with all the care she deserves,” she said, adding that the charity has also taken in two youngsters “who now have a bright future ahead of them”.

Emaciated Shetlands battling for their lives following rescue

Three lice-ridden emaciated Shetland ponies have been rescued by Bransby Horses.

The ponies, Alfie, Tinkerbell and Tyrian, were being kept in Nottinghamshire and had body condition scores of 0, 1 and 0.5, respectively.

All three were “extremely lethargic” when collected by the charity.

Alfie collapsed in the trailer on the way back to the rescue centre and has since had to be lifted by the Bransby team on numerous occasions. He has “no muscle or fat on him” and weighs 35kg.

“The vet is taking this case very seriously and we are monitoring all three of the ponies around the clock,” said Ryan Rouse, head of external welfare at Bransby Horses.

“Their blood results show severe health issues that we must tackle carefully once they have stabilised, but the main aim at the moment is to simply build their strength. We are lucky to have a great support network that offers advice in these situations.

“The severity of their weight loss is masked by their thick coats which is not an uncommon feature with welfare cases over the winter. It is very worrying to think this is only the start of the colder weather and we are already dealing with such horrific cases; it leaves an uneasy feeling with us all.”

Mare involved in ‘shocking’ neglect case receives animal hero award

A mare has won an award for her remarkable recovery from severe neglect.

Emerald, a resident at equine welfare charity Bransby Horses, was recognised at the Animal Hero Awards 2017.

She won the “back from the brink” category at the London awards ceremony, which was hosted by Amanda Holden.

When Emerald was rescued from an address near Newark in January last year by the RSPCA and Bransby Horses, it was touch and go as to whether she would survive.

She was emaciated and suffering from exhaustion.

The team at Bransby Horses cared for Emerald round the clock,

lifting her by hand with a harness every few hours, until she had the strength to stand alone.

“Lying down for long periods was dangerous for Emerald as she was in such poor health,” said a Bransby spokesman. “It could have led to pressure sores, stomach ulcers and problems associated with infrequent passing of droppings and urine.”

Emerald is now in good health and following veterinary approval, has started the backing process with the charity’s rehoming team. It is hoped she will find a new foster home in 2018.

“This rescue was one of the most shocking cases of neglect our team had ever seen and it took months to nurse Emerald back to full health,” said Ryan Rouse, Bransby Horses’ head of external welfare.

“We are delighted the RSPCA subsequently got the case to court and that Emerald’s owned was sentenced; we take great pride in continually supporting the dedicated inspectors with welfare cases.”

Intensive care unit to provide vital help for horses in need

An equine rescue charity will be able to offer neglected horses and ponies first-rate medical support, thanks to a brand new intensive care unit (ICU).

The facility at Bransby Horses in Lincolnshire has been funded by legacies, donations and an appeal and cost in the region of £175,000.

The ICU has been specially adapted to help care for the desperate equines that Bransby has had pass through its doors — many of whom require help to stand as they are too weak.

The new unit includes stables with padded walls and rubber floors, which are cushioned for horses prone to collapse.

Each stable also has a hoist for lifting horses and supporting them to stand — before the ICU was built, horses that were unable to support their own weight had to be lifted by hand.

“This required six or more members of staff and carried substantial risk of injury or strain for the staff involved,” said a spokesman for Bransby.

“Without an independent hoist for support, these frail horses were also at risk of injuries from falling against the breeze block walls, which were present in the stables used previously.”

The facility’s location on the charity’s quarantine yard also enables staff to maintain strict biosecurity measures and help prevent the spread of disease. The new boxes are sealed, making them easy to wash down and disinfect.

In 2016, Bransby rescued 144 horses, ponies and donkeys, all of which were initially cared for on the quarantine yard. The ICU will enable Bransby Horses to provide the “best possible support” for new arrivals.

The build was made possible thanks to a £126,886 legacy donation from Miss Joan Muriel Lawford, a £1,000 legacy donation from Anne Isabella Thornes, appeal donations totalling £1,626 and £45,000 of further charity donations.

“The charity would like to thank supporters for making this development possible,” the spokesman added.

Bransby Horses welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson added: “While they may look cute, we really would not recommend breeding or purchasing miniature ponies without careful thought and consideration.

“Like all equines, Shetland ponies and miniatures need specialist care and management and should only be taken on by knowledgeable people who are prepared to put the animal’s needs first for their entire lifetime, which can be well over a 30-year commitment.”

“In 2023 more than half of the animals involved had to be put to sleep due to the severity of their condition,” she said, adding that financial constraints were one factor, but horses who were difficult to handle, with owners’ lack of knowledge, have also played a part.

Bransby welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson said: “In 2023 we had 18 cases, four of which were life-threatening, which is unprecedented for us. We’ve seen similar cases over the years but never this many and it’s concerning.

Two ponies signed over to Bransby last October had to be put down as the lack of hoof care had caused “irreversible” damage to hoof structures, ligaments and tendons.

“It’s not just the long foot growth that is the problem, it’s the unseen damage to the internal structures of the foot that often mean these horses will need pain management for the remainder of their lives,” Ms Jenkinson said.

“Although there is no official shortage of farriers in the UK as such, there seems to be an issue arising where owners are struggling financially, and this is often exacerbated by horses that are difficult to handle and farriers are, quite rightly, reluctant to provide a farrier service.

Rebecca Boulert, World Horse Welfare education officer, said it is “imperative” for charities dealing with cases where individuals are unable to care for their horses because of financial reasons, to understand if the situation has worsened over the last 12 months.

“We know from last year’s research that many owners were just about coping, and all possible cost savings had already been made, but that left little room for a further squeeze on purses,” she said.

A tailored version of the survey targeting charities and other equestrian rescue centres will run concurrently to find out how the continuing cost-of-living crisis is affecting these organisations. Those involved will be contacted directly by NEWC to take part.

By December Redwings had taken in 104 equines this year, and rehomed 101.

“While this was less than our record 147 homes found in 2022, this is still a vital way that Redwings can continue to manage our capacity, so we are able to continue our life-saving front-line welfare work,” said Ms Cutress.

“This year we rehomed 82 horses, which is a drop of more than 50% on last year, which is a trend across the rehoming sector as the cost of living takes its toll,” RSPCA equine specialist Mark Kennedy told H&H.

Bransby Horses took in 119 equines, compared to 150 last year. The charity rehomed 83 in 2023 and 109 in 2022.

“This winter has hit the equine community hard, so we are expecting an increase in calls for support and welfare concerns as we head into 2024.”

“I just thought it might be something nice for us both to do together so we

applied to foster a rescue pony from Bransby Horses,” said Rebecca, who had owned horses previously.

“We took Skip on just to have some fun with and he has just been incredible. What he has brought to mine and Peyton’s life is hard to put into words. But he brings me sanity, he makes us laugh every day, he calms Peyton and he’s so cheeky, we love him to bits.”

Peyton and Skip attended their first show together this summer, a month after Skip’s arrival with the family, and they won their class.

“I was in tears. I was so proud of them both. It wasn’t something we ever expected when we decided to get a pony,” said Rebecca.

“At the end of the summer we decided to go bigger and have a go at the Traditional of the Year Show. On the day we were up at 4am, at the stables for 5am and arrived at the showground in Olney for 8.30am.”

Peyton and Skip won their 10-strong class, which put them forward for the championship in the evening.

“I just looked at it as an amazing experience for him and Peyton and never thought for a minute we would get placed,” said Rebecca, adding that as they walked into the arena for the championship Queen’s We Are the Champions was being played.

“It felt emotional from the start. I looked around at the competition and thought we had no chance but after we trotted him round and lined up, the man called over the speaker; ‘Champion and the traditional best lead rein of 2023 goes to Peyton and Bransby Skip’.

“I couldn’t believe it. I had tears streaming down my face and poor Peyton was just in

shock – she couldn’t believe it either. It was one of the best and proudest moments of my life. Peyton and Skip were utterly amazing. Skip was the best boy ever, he acted like a professional all day.”

Rebecca added that the family is “so grateful” to Bransby Horses for giving them “such an amazing opportunity”.

“We love our little Skip to the moon and back,” she said.

A Bransby spokesman added that Skip has been “spoiled rotten” with treats and hugs ever since.

“Peyton is now looking forward to spending Christmas with her favourite pony,” said the spokesman.

A Bransby spokesman said that at the time another seven ponies were “often escaping” from the field where they were being illegally fly-grazed, but when Bransby field officer Kris Walker attended the field the others had been taken away before the team arrived.

“When I arrived there were just two in the field, a mare and foal. I was quite concerned about the foal, as he was very lethargic and depressed. I wasn’t sure if he was suckling either, so there was a concern that he might not even be Snow Bunting’s foal,” said Kris.

“I monitored them daily and it soon became clear they were on their own so we would need to do something if these ponies were going to have any chance of survival.”

Bransby worked with the police, RSPCA and a vet to obtain permission to take Snow Bunting and Puffin into their care. While this process was ongoing Kris continued to monitor the ponies.

Bransby welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson said: “We are very grateful to everyone who called us, ultimately saving the lives of these two lovely ponies who would not have lasted through the winter without help. They were both very thin, poor and in need of food and veterinary attention.”

Puffin, thought to be around six months old, now weighs just over 57kg and has “improved daily”.

“He is still very thin but now suckling from his mother,” said a Bransby spokesman, who added that Puffin and Snow Bunting are being treated for very high worm burdens and malnourishment, but it is “hoped that they will make a full recovery”.

“All efforts were made to trace an owner but as no one came forward to claim the ponies they have now been signed over into the care of Bransby Horses.”

Despite drier weather this weekend, the floods have kept rising, Bransby said today, and it is estimated that 40% of its land is under water.

Bransby staff moved about 70 of the 300 horses on site on Friday, when the EA said it would deliberately flood land to protect houses in nearby Lincoln. Another 30 horses were moved over the weekend.

“It is possible the charity’s ability to take in new rescues will be affected in the coming weeks but at this point the full impact on their ability to operate is under review,” a Bransby spokesman said.

“Bransby Horses works very closely with the Environment Agency to reduce flooding in Lincoln by using its grazing land as flood plains, but sadly it receives no funding or compensation for this. The impact of the flooding will be an additional cost coming at an already difficult economic time.”

Bransby is open to visitors at the moment; it won the best small visitor attraction title at the Destination Lincolnshire awards this month.

“We don’t want to disappoint our supporters, especially during the half-term school holidays,” said Bransby’s Sally Banton. “Now more than ever we need to continue raising funds for the charity to help pay for the cost of the latest flooding.

“Our café is open and our half-term activities, including Pecan’s Pumpkin Patch, are in full swing. By visiting us you are helping to support us through this crisis and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who visits and supports us.”

“It will only be over the coming weeks that the charity will know the full extent and cost of this crisis,” the spokesman said.
