Normalising wearing body protectors day to day and more research into female bodies could help change attitudes towards wearing them.

Lorna Cameron, senior lecturer in the equine department at Hartpury University, spoke at the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) safety conference (21 April) about early stage investigations into body protectors and female bodies.

Her talk, titled “Safety versus comfort”, centred on the work she is doing as part of a team led by fellow senior lecturer Victoria Lewis into the impact of body protectors on comfort, rider position and considerations for female riders.

“One of the things that is a real human nature is the fact that we know what is good for us and we know what makes us safer, and then we do not do it,” she said.

She spoke of findings from a 2024 study, to which 97% respondents were female, that found that hacking, schooling on the flat and showjumping schooling were the three most common activities during which falls happened.

“So we wanted to find out, what is it that is driving our choice to either wear or not wear a body protector, and what actually are the barriers to taking that up?” said Ms Cameron.

The team set up a 24-question online survey and had 1,010 responses, of whom 97.8% were female and 89.8% were amateur riders.

Among the findings was that 61.5% of female riders reported that they felt wearing a body protector altered their position, that comfort, fit and restriction of movement were the primary barriers to wearing it, and that non-users were three times more likely to report stiffness or rigidity as reason not to wear one.

“There is some evidence that the less we use our body protectors in our everyday riding and training, the more awkward and clunky they feel when we go to a competition,” said Ms Cameron.

The team carried out a very small-scale pilot study and the initial findings “did suggest that rider position was altered by the body protector”, so decided to dig further. This included looking into research into body armour in other physically demanding occupations, such as for soldiers and police officers, in which some findings suggested women are wearing ill-fitting body protection to “fit the ‘girls’ in”.

This led the team to start looking into exercise-induced breast pain in different types of bra and body protector combinations, which they would like to investigate further.

“I had a waiting list that was five times longer than the people I could fit into the data collection day, which suggests […] there’s an issue,” Ms Cameron said.

She added that the team’s recommendations include thinking about the female form in body protector design, perhaps trying to push for more consistent wear in training and possibly while off the horse.

“I’m a coach and I do notice younger riders don’t seem to find their body protectors as uncomfortable because they grew up with them,” she said. “It would be really useful to investigate if there’s an impact on how comfortable we feel a body protector is when we’re actually using it on a regular basis in our training and what impact that might have.”

‘The manufacturers really helped us out’

FEI chief medical officer Mark Hart gave a whistle-stop summary of the FEI’s approach to safety and personal protective equipment.

He said “tradition” is one of the barriers the FEI has come up against in PPE adoption.

“In 2021 we mandated [helmets] for all disciplines, with the exception of vaulting. The manufacturers really helped us out in this,” he said. “The manufacturers figured out that when they made the helmets and they put bling on it, dressage riders loved it.”

Speaking generally about PPE, Dr Hart expressed frustration at the “total lack of harmonisation of global [safety] standards”.

“Heads and gravity and ground are pretty much the same around the world,” he said.

“You’ve only got one life and one head – and you can’t really put a price on that.”

This was Laura Collett’s take on rider protection, shared in a discussion at the first British Equestrian Trade Association safety conference on 21 April.

The European champion, Olympic gold medallist and five-star winner, who is sponsored by Uvex helmets and Racesafe body protectors, gave “an eventer’s perspective on safety” during the conference, the aim of which was to reduce risks to help make riding safer.

Laura suffered serious injuries in a rotational fall in 2013; she was asked whether this had changed her perspective on safety equipment.

“I think I’ve always been very pro safety,” she said. “After I had the bad fall, I was just very grateful I was already slightly a step ahead. I was wearing the air jacket on top of a good body protector, and was told by doctors at the time that they thought the air jacket did save my life.

“The horse landed directly on top of me and I did have a few injuries but all things considered, when you hit the ground and have a horse land on top of you, the fact I was able to walk away from that without any hugely significant injuries meant I was very grateful for all the equipment I had on. I’ve not changed my thought process from that day, other than I continue to be grateful and continue to try to wear the very best there is around.”

Laura said that before that incident, she had been “very, very lucky” and had not even broken a bone in a fall.

“You do slightly think ‘It won’t happen to me’ but at the same time you know you’re riding an animal with its own brain and we gallop towards solid fences,” she said. “The reality is that accidents can happen, and freak accidents can happen; it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re riding a ‘bad’ horse.”

Laura said the fall made her slightly change her mindset in the horses she rides, but that this will not prevent all falls or accidents.

“The very best horse can make a mistake and you don’t know when it’s going to happen,” she said. “It’s not like you can just say ‘I’m going to wear a body protector at the big events’ or anything.

“Years ago, you saw a lot of people riding without hats; there seemed to be a perception that it was cool. I personally never thought it was cool to ride without a hat, because the horse can spook or trip or anything can happen, and you can fall off. Even if you’re the best rider in the world.

“It’s often a case of how you fall too; you see other people, and I’ve had falls myself, that look very dramatic but you get up and walk away, no bother. You see another one that you think looks insignificant but just the way the person falls, they can have a worse outcome.”

Laura said she wears the same protective equipment at home as for competitions; the same cross-country helmet and body protector with built-in air jacket.

Improved design

She said design has improved; a body protector with an air vet on top could feel too bulky but from her perspective, her gear has no impact on her riding.

“I have full faith in the products I use, and I have very much tested them over the years!” she said. “And I’m very grateful they’ve stood up to the test.”

Laura said the improvement in technology means protectors and helmets are more comfortable now. And although she said this does not bother her, there are some who may not have worn them before owing to their appearance.

“You can have whatever colour air jacket you want now,” she said. “All those things I think make it so people can’t come up with excuses for not wearing them. I’m sure some people still do! But I think if they were honest with themselves and tried them, they’d realise they don’t really have a leg to stand on, saying they’re uncomfortable or they impact them in a negative way.”

Laura considered changes in safety over the years; she was one of those who preferred a top hat for dressage but now would think that “looked wrong”.

“Times do change and people have to accept they’re actually changing for the better,” she said. “It just sometimes takes a little while for people to realise, but I think you look back at old photos, when people were barely wearing a helmet, not attached, and you just think ‘What were they thinking?’”

Laura said her first priority for safety equipment is the standard of protection, then comfort; she advised anyone who may not feel comfortable to try different brands and find what works best for them, stressing the need to have equipment fitted professionally.

And asked about her view on anyone who might be reluctant to spend large sums of money on safety equipment, she said: “You’ve only got one life.

“At the time, it can seem like a lot of money having to replace the helmet or something that’s broken, but you’d rather spend that money than have another fall with the same helmet, and it be compromised in a way you can’t see. Something will have happened in that fall and you can’t take that chance.

“With head injuries we know it’s often the second that can be a lot worse, even if it’s less impact, so you want to have as much protection as you can and I don’t think that’s something you take lightly. You’ve got one life and one head and you can’t really put a price on that.”

Laura added that were she to speak to her younger self, or a younger rider, she would advise them not to take the risks.

“Don’t try to think you’re cool by not wearing safety equipment,” she said. “A big part would be to always replace the hat. That’s one thing that’s slightly changed for me; even the smallest of falls. If you hit your head, even though you’ve not been concussed, you walked away, still replace the hat.

“When I had my bad fall, my hat had a tiny little crack, and we thought nothing of it. But they took it apart and the difference in the cushioning, the impact it had on the inner shell of the hat that you couldn’t see from the outside, was pretty scary. That hit home for me; the hat can do its job without you realising but it means you need to replace it.

“Everyone who saw my fall was really shocked I didn’t have an injury; I hit the ground and the horse fell on top of me so to come away without a brain injury was pretty impressive, and that’s something you really appreciate. You realise that you can’t be taking chances when it comes to your head.”

What standard do children’s body protectors need to be?

There are three levels of protection that one of the best children’s body protectors for horse riding can offer, but if you’re shopping for a child you should look for BETA level 3 (2018) as this is the highest body protector standard for horse riding. Moreover, if your governing body or organisation (for example, The Pony Club) requires that you wear a body protector, this the standard they’re looking for.

Governing bodies and rider organisations that require a body protector no longer recognise the 2009 purple label, so if there’s any chance your child is going to compete or attend a Pony Club event, make sure your body protector is up to standard with a blue 2018 label.

All the children’s body protectors in this guide conform to the latest BETA level 3 standard (2018).

How long do body protectors last?

Under normal circumstances, a body protector should be replaced at least every three to five years because after this time the impact absorption properties of the foam may have started to decline, which means it will no longer provide your child with the same level of protection that it did the first day they wore it. Coupled with that, although even the best children’s body protectors for horse riding usually offer a good level of adjustment, it’s likely that your child will outgrow theirs and need a new one before it has reached the end of its life.

If your child has a heavy fall, check the body protector for dents immediately. The foam will return to its original shape within 30 minutes, but a dent would suggest that this part of the body protector will have lost some absorption properties and you should, therefore, replace it.

Taking good care of a body protector means that it will probably last closer to five years than three, which is handy if you have multiple children who are into riding. Avoid leaving it lying around at the yard, in the lorry where it might get damaged, and don’t store it in your hot car or damp tack room – all of these locations are likely to cause it to deteriorate faster. When not in use, it’s best to hang it up in a wardrobe at home with the zips and Velcro fastened.

When do you need to wear a body protector for horse riding?

Body protectors are optional if you’re learning to ride, but many beginner riders feel more confident with one. If you are a competitive rider, however, some governing bodies will require that you wear an up-to-standard body protector. They are compulsory to wear if you’re eventing at any level, competing in working hunter or working hunter pony classes under BSPS rules, and for some Pony Club disciplines.

What standard do body protectors need to be?

There are three levels of protection and, of these, the BETA Level 3 (2018) body protector standard offers the highest level. All of the body protectors we’ve featured in this guide meet this standard and are accepted by all major organisations.

There were two versions of this BETA standard – 2009 (purple label) and 2018 (blue label). They have the same level of protection, but the 2009 version ceased manufacturing in 2018. Although unlikely, you may still find these purple-labelled body protectors in stores and online, governing bodies and rider organisations, including The Pony Club and British Eventing, stopped accepting the purple label at the end of 2023, so make sure to check if your existing body protector needs an upgrade.

If you are looking to buy a new body protector, we recommend you check that it meets the 2018 version of the standard to ensure you’re able to wear it in the future, so look out for the blue label. Some products will look exactly the same and have the same name – it’s only the label that’s different.

If your sport’s governing body – such as The Pony Club, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs, or BSPS – requires a body protector, this is the version you’ll need.

How long do body protectors last?

You should replace your body protector at least every three to five years – after this time the impact absorption properties of the foam may have started to decline. If you have a heavy fall, check your body protector for dents immediately. The foam will return to its original shape within half an hour but a dent would suggest that this part of the body protector will have lot some absorption properties and you should, therefore, replace it.

Taking good care of your body protector means that it may last longer within the three to five year recommended lifespan, if it is not damaged in a fall.

How to care for a body protector

You can extend the lifespan of your body protector by:

• Cleaning it with a sponge and warm, soapy water
• Storing it in a dry, warm space, avoiding excessive heat
• Avoiding keeping it in the car as direct sunlight, excessive heat and damp will cause the fabric and foam to deteriorate more quickly
• Hanging it up to maintain shape
• Closing fastenings when not in use to prevent hair and dirt clogging them up

Body protectors vs back protectors for horse riding 

Body protectors and back protectors are easily confused. Although they appear alike, their functions differ significantly.

A body protector is the stronger option, offering comprehensive protection for your torso. It is designed to shield your back, chest, ribs, and internal organs from injury in case of a fall or kick. Some riders also choose to pair a body protector with one of the best air jackets for added protection.

Do I need to get a body protector fitted by a professional?

Wearing the correct safety gear every time you ride is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of injury, as there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Body protectors are designed to absorb impact from a fall, a kick or being stepped on by a horse, and certain body protector standards are compulsory for competitions under the rules of governing bodies.

The body protector standards were originally developed by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), with the help of riding organisations, doctors, riders, manufacturers and retailers. In 2000, the new BETA standard superseded all previous standards, but it has been revised twice since – in 2009 and 2018.

As of 1 January 2024, major governing bodies only accept body protectors that meet the latest BETA level 3 (2018) version of the standard, so if you plan to compete and your body protector is not up to standard, you’ll need to buy one of the best up-to-standard body protectors for horse riding or best body protectors for children.

What are the current body protector standards?

There are three levels of protection – and the vast majority of horse riders should look for BETA level 3, which is the highest standard of protection on offer.

BETA level 3 (2018)

This is the latest version of the BETA level 3 standard and it is marked with a blue label. It’s the standard you need to look for if your governing body or rider organisation – for example, The Pony Club, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs or BSPS – requires you to wear a body protector.

All of the body protectors we’ve featured in our buying guides are currently accepted by all major governing bodies.

What about BETA level 3 (2009)?

The 2009 version of the BETA level 3 standard (with a purple label) ceased manufacturing in 2018 and it’s unlikely that you’ll see any of these purple-labelled body protectors in stores or online.

Governing bodies and rider organisations that require a body protector no longer recognise the purple 2009 label, with most ceasing to accept this on 31 December 2023. They can still be worn if you’re competing at British Dressage or British Showjumping as a body protector is optional and no guidance for a standard is given – or, indeed, if you’re not competing at all. However, it’s recommended that you replace your body protector every three to five years and the BETA level 3 (2018) standard offers the highest level of protection.

CE marks

A CE mark which, although not a quality mark, shows that a product is fit for purpose as outlined in personal protective equipment guidelines.

Body protectors that are CE marked to EN 13158:2018 (the European standard for equestrian body protectors) are annually retested to the BETA 2018 standard, which means they consistently meet the very latest in safety standards.

What are the different levels of body protector?

There are three levels of the 2018 revision, each designed for different activities and denoted by a colour-coded label on the garment.

• Level 1 (green label) provides the lowest level of protection that is only considered appropriate for licensed jockeys while racing.
• Level 2 (orange label) is only considered suitable for low-risk situations, which does not include jumping, riding on the road, riding young or excitable horses or riding while inexperienced.
• Level 3 (blue label) is considered appropriate for general riding and competing. Level 3 body protectors should prevent minor injuries, including bruising that would have produced stiffness and pain, reduce soft tissue injuries and prevent some rib fractures.

Shoulder protection standards

There is also a BETA Standard for shoulder protectors. Shoulder pads that are sold to be worn with a particular body protector, such as the Racesafe Motion 3.0 shoulder pads, will have been tested to the same level as the body protector. Research into falls onto the shoulder during eventing competitions has shown that wearing adequate shoulder protection reduces the risk of breaking the collarbone by up to 80%.

Charles Owen has made the “heart-breaking decision” to stop the production of a number of its hat models, following news it will cease manufacturing in the UK.

On Wednesday (12 November) Charles Owen announced to retailers that UK production was to cease – a result of the lease expiring on its Wrexham premises. Yesterday (13 November) a company spokesperson confirmed to H&H that although UK production will cease, the business still has “every intention to continue to sell our products to the UK and beyond”

In an update today (14 November) the company has shared further news on its products.

“While we have a number of alternative properties we are looking to move to, unfortunately none of them are suitable to maintain the production of our UK made helmets. We have therefore made the heart-breaking decision to stop making those models,” it read.

“However, we will continue with the products we have been making outside of the UK for some time now, such as the Kylo, Phoenix, Kontor, Eclipse, Shadow and our range of accessories. We are also pushing forward with at least two exciting new products in 2026”.

The statement to retailers on Wednesday said that “despite strong commitments” earlier this year that the company would be able to remain at its premises, “those assurances have sadly not materialised”.

“Although we have secured a short extension, it only allows us to continue operations until 19 December, less than six weeks from now,” the statement read.

“Those who have visited our facility will understand the complexity involved in producing our helmets – the volume of equipment and machinery is significant. Decommissioning, dismantling, relocating and recommissioning this operation is a major logistical challenge. While we do have several potential new locations under consideration it will not be possible to maintain production.”

Yesterday a Charles Owen spokesperson told H&H the decision to stop production at its Wrexham location “has been incredibly difficult, and comes only after exhausting every possible option to secure a long-term lease for our current facility”.

“While this change affects our UK manufacturing, our commitment to rider safety remains paramount. We are fully dedicated to our future plans, including the continued development of our upcoming products mentioned in the announcement, along with all current outsourced product lines, which are completely unaffected,” she said.

The spokesperson confirmed equestrians will still be able to buy Charles Owen products.

“Although UK production will cease, we still have every intention to continue to sell our products to the UK and beyond,” she said.

“There are a lot of the UK-produced Charles Owen products already with our retailers, so I’m sure our consumers will have no problems sourcing our UK made products for some time yet and we remain dedicated to safety for all riders with our unaffected products.”

The cut-off for retailers to place new orders from the UK facility was today.

“We will continue to draw from our existing stock of raw materials and sub-assemblies to fulfil as many orders as possible before 19 December. While we will make every effort to meet all commitments, some shortfalls may occur, but we will work hard to minimise any shortages,” retailers have been told.

Mr Derby “sincerely apologised” for the short notice and said securing a new long-term lease had been Charles Owens’ “top priority for some time”.

“However, we have exhausted every option to avoid this outcome, unfortunately we have reached a point where this decision has had to be made,” he said, adding that the company has stock of key lines ready for dispatch, allocated to retailers on a first come, first served basis.

The news does not affect “outsourced product lines”.

“Kylo, Phoenix, Kontor, Shadow, Eclipse, as well as all accessories are not affected. An air jacket or body protector can make all the difference in a fall, but knowing how they work and when to wear them is key. They’re often grouped together as rider safety gear, but the protection they offer is very different.

So, which one do you actually need, and when should you wear both? Here’s everything you need to know about choosing between the best air jackets and the best body protectors – or using them together – depending on how and what you ride.

Air jacket vs body protector: What’s the difference?

A body protector is a foam-filled vest designed to absorb impact and reduce blunt trauma in the event of a fall, kick, or collision. It offers constant, passive protection to your back, chest, ribs and internal organs. Once it’s on, it’s ready – no activation needed.

By contrast, an air jacket is an inflatable vest that only deploys when triggered. It’s worn over your clothing (and usually over a body protector) and attaches to the saddle via a lanyard. If the rider is thrown from the saddle, the lanyard pulls a cord which activates a CO₂ canister, inflating the jacket in a fraction of a second. This creates an air cushion around key areas including the spine, neck, pelvis and sometimes the chest.

So while a body protector reduces impact force using dense materials, an air jacket reduces it by creating a pressurised air buffer – but only after a fall is in progress.

Which should you wear – and when?

Body protectors are essential for high-risk riding and mandatory in certain competitions, such as:

• Cross-country (and are mandatory in British Eventing for the cross-country phase, and over solid fences in arena eventing)
• Riding young, green or unpredictable horses
• Schooling in potentially hazardous situations

To meet current competition rules, your body protector must be BETA Level 3 (2018) standard – look for the blue label. Most governing bodies won’t accept older body protector standards (e.g. purple 2009) or lower protection levels. It’s also worth noting that body protectors should be replaced every three to five years, even if they haven’t been involved in a fall.

Air jackets, while offering excellent protection for certain injuries (such as spinal compression or internal bruising), are not a substitute for a BETA-approved body protector in any discipline where one is required, like eventing. They’re an optional, additional layer.

Air jackets are commonly worn by:

• Eventers, over the top of a body protector for cross-country
• Riders schooling or hacking who want extra peace of mind
• Experienced riders working with sensitive or high-level horses
• Riders with previous injury history seeking more upper-body protection

Some air jackets offer additional neck and pelvis protection that body protectors don’t. But remember: they only work if they inflate – and that requires separation from the saddle. In situations where you fall with your horse, or aren’t fully separated, some may not trigger in time.

Pros and cons

Body protectors:

✔ Constant protection – no need to “arm” or trigger

✔ Approved for use in affiliated competitions

✔ Protects torso, ribs and organs from impact and kicks

✔ Offers coverage even in close falls or entanglements

✖ Can feel bulky or warm, especially in hot weather

✖ Some riders find them restrictive, especially to start with

Air jackets:

✔ Lightweight and unobtrusive when not deployed

✔ Inflates to offer neck, spine, chest and pelvis protection

✔ Often more comfortable for long hours in the saddle

✔ Can reduce whiplash-type injuries

✖ Must be worn with a body protector in most competitions

✖ Requires rearming after deployment (usually by replacing the gas canister)

✖ Won’t inflate if the rider isn’t fully separated from the horse

Air jacket vs body protector: How to choose

Choosing the right safety gear depends on the type of riding you’re doing – and whether you’re competing or not.

If your discipline requires a BETA Level 3 body protector, that’s non-negotiable. Air jackets can be worn over the top for additional protection, but they don’t meet the criteria on their own and won’t be accepted in competition without a body protector underneath.

For everyday riding where safety gear is optional, the choice depends on what you’re doing and the level of protection you want. Some riders stick with a body protector for its consistent coverage, others go for the lighter feel of an air jacket, knowing it only activates during a fall, and many choose to wear both. There’s also the option of a back protector for riders who want minimal coverage without the bulk.

Fit is critical, especially if you’re combining an air jacket with a body protector. They need to work together without restricting movement or interfering with inflation. Most brands provide compatibility guidelines, and a professional fitting can make a big difference. If you can, try the gear on while mounted to check that everything moves with you in the saddle, and check that lanyards are properly adjusted.

If you’re shopping for rider safety gear, you might have come across two similar-sounding options: body protector and back protector. While they might seem quite similar at first glance, they’re designed for different purposes. So, what’s the difference, and which one do you actually need?

Here’s everything you need to know to make the right choice for your riding when it comes to choosing between the best body protectors and best back protectors.

Body protector vs back protector: What’s the difference?

A body protector is the more robust of the two. Designed to safeguard your entire torso, it covers your back, chest, ribs and internal organs in the event of a fall or kick. These padded vests are usually made from layers of shock-absorbing foam, and their design varies from flexible and lightweight to more rigid depending on the level of protection.

A back protector, by contrast, does exactly what it says – it protects your spine and lower back, and nothing more. These are generally thinner, lighter and more comfortable, but don’t offer the same level of overall coverage. They’re ideal for riders who want a bit of extra peace of mind during flatter work or hacking, but they’re not designed for high-risk disciplines.

Which should you wear – and when?

The simple answer is: it depends on what you’re doing.

Body protectors are best suited to riskier activities such as:

• Cross-country (and are mandatory in British Eventing for the cross-country phase, and over solid fences in arena eventing)
• Jumping young or unpredictable horses
• Backing horses
• Schooling in more unpredictable environments

From 1 January 2024, most major governing bodies will only accept body protectors that meet the latest BETA Level 3 (2018) standard.

You can spot BETA Level 3 (2018) approved body protectors by their blue label. If your sport’s governing body – such as The Pony Club, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs, or BSPS – requires a body protector, this is the version you’ll need.

Body protectors with green, orange, or the older purple (2009) labels aren’t accepted by most governing bodies. While you can still wear them for unaffiliated riding or in disciplines like British Dressage or British Showjumping – where body protectors are optional – it’s recommended to replace them every three to five years.

For full peace of mind, the BETA Level 3 (2018) body protector standard offers the highest level of protection currently available. Back protectors are a good choice for:

• Hacking
• Schooling on the flat
• Riders who don’t like the feel of a full-body protector but still want a bit of spinal protection

Body protector vs back protector: How to choose

Start by considering what kind of riding you usually do. If you’re mostly hacking or doing flatwork, a back protector may be sufficient. But if you’re jumping, eventing or working with unpredictable horses, a body protector is likely to be the safer choice.

Next, think about fit. A well-fitted protector – whether full body or back-only – should feel snug but not restrictive. It shouldn’t shift or ride up when you’re in the saddle. Many tack shops offer professional fitting services, and it’s worth taking advantage of this: a poorly fitted protector can’t do its job properly.

We recommend having your body protector or back protector fitted by a BETA-trained retailer.

Comfort matters, too. Try mounting and moving around while trying it on – can you lift your arms, sit comfortably, and would you be able to dismount easily? If not, try a different size or model. Some riders also choose to pair a body protector with one of the best air jackets for added protection.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but wearing the right safety gear – every time you ride – is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of injury.

Leading doctors, biomechanic specialists and manufacturers are among experts taking a deeper look at whether safety vests – including body protectors and air vests – reduce injury severity.

The FEI has formed a new equestrian safety vest working group, which aims to improve rider safety through scientific research and innovation in protective equipment.

The announcement from the federation said this comes “amid a steady rise in the use of safety vests […] across a wide range of equestrian disciplines, and growing concern about the lack of independent data to support their effectiveness in reducing athlete injuries”.

Chair of the FEI medical committee Mark Hart will also chair the working group. Its first job is to “examine the current state of knowledge around thoracic and spinal injuries in equestrian sport, with a focus on understanding how and when these injuries occur, and whether safety vests play a significant role in reducing the severity of athlete injuries”.

Dr Hart said: “While there is growing support for the use of body protectors and air vests in both sport and recreational riding, there is still minimal data to fully understand their effectiveness.

“We lack critical data on how and what specific injuries occur during falls and how protective equipment performs under real-world conditions.

“Athletes and others in the community are asking important, constructive questions relating to how air vests perform in real-world settings, how they affect the athlete’s movement, and whether their use might influence the horse’s behaviour. These insights are essential and are helping to drive the discussion toward more effective and evidence-based safety solutions.”

He added: “This is why the FEI has tasked the working group with undertaking a comprehensive review of current safety standards and will include developing improved testing protocols that more accurately reflect the realities athletes face in both training and competition environments.”

The group has two arms: a scientific panel and a national federation advisory panel.

The scientific panel includes the British Horseracing Authority’s chief medical advisor, Jerry Hill, and features international experts in biomechanical engineering, injury modelling, medicine and safety vest manufacturing, and international standards bodies.

An FEI spokesperson said the panel has “diverse expertise” in areas of the body most at risk during a fall, such as the head, neck, spine, ribs and chest.

British Equestrian Trade Association executive director Claire Williams is among the experts on the national federation advisory panel. This group’s job is to “support open communication with the wider equestrian community in their regions” and to help co-ordinate additional fundraising for research.

The working group’s aims include collaborating closely with riders, manufacturers, international standards organisations and other sports with similar injury risks, such as racing and motocross.

It is expected to propose modifications or new testing protocols to promote safer design and encourage wider adoption of best practice. It will also make recommendations to the FEI and national federations on how to improve data collection and injury reporting, to better link fall mechanisms with injuries.

British Eventing (BE) has announced a six-week grace period on its new body protector rule owing to supply shortages.

Eventers now have until 8 April to update their British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) 2009 level three body protector to the new BETA 2018 standard. At BE competitions body protectors are mandatory in the cross-country phase, and over solid fences in arena eventing.

From 1 January 2024, body protectors that had the former BETA 2009 safety certification were no longer permitted, but yesterday (26 February) BE announced a grace period.

“Following feedback from members, and subsequent conversations with BETA, BE has been informed that there is a supply issue being seen by some in relation to the new level three blue BETA 2018 standard body protector,” said a BE spokesman.

“With this in mind, we have agreed with our insurers that a six-week grace period can be put in place. This means that all body protectors, being worn at any BE event, will need to be of the level three blue BETA 2018 standard by no later than Monday 8 April 2024.”

The spokesman added that BE will be carrying out spot checks at events from this date to ensure compliancy.

Riders who are required to wear a body protector for Pony Club and British Riding Club (BRC) activities must still abide by the 1 January rule change and wear the BETA 2018 standard.

Marcus Capel, Pony Club chief executive, told H&H the organisation is aware there is an issue with some suppliers, but this is understood to be “very short term”.

“The new body protector ruling has been in place for a couple of months now. At our very successful Barrier Animal Health Spring Festival final at Arena UK this weekend there were no issues reported of a shortage of body protectors,” he said.

“On balance, therefore, the Pony Club is not going to set up a grace period for the body protector rule and will maintain its position that a BETA 2018 standard body protector is needed for all cross-country and pony racing activities.”

A BRC spokesman told H&H: “Throughout all BRC riding activities, good safety practices are of paramount importance. This includes the mandatory requirement to wear a body protector when participating in any of our cross-country competitions, or training activities, where fixed fences are in use.

“As per the 2024 BRC handbook, and in line with current BETA standards, our rules continue to state that our participants need to wear a BETA level three body protector which displays a blue 2018 label.”

Helite Zip’In 2 Airbag

The discreet and close-fitting Helite Zip’In 2 Airbag is designed so it can be worn alone, or under an approved outer layer. It has a lanyard trigger system that you attach to your saddle via a supplied strap, which slips over the stirrup bars. This provides a D ring in front of the pommel that I could quickly and easily attach the lanyard clip to using one hand, while holding my reins in the other.

The air jacket is activated when you are separated from the saddle by sufficient distance and velocity to extend the elasticated lanyard to its full length, pulling the keyball out of the trigger, which leads the vest to inflate in less 0.1 second.

*Update: 30 April 2023* I have now tested the air vest when parting company with my horse during a jump training session. The vest inflated as expected, and I was able to remount and continue with my jumping lesson after my fall. I felt the air vest protected my torso from bruising when I fell directly on to the jump. I did not feel winded by the air vest activating.

*Update: 31 October 2023* Having fallen off a number of times while wearing this vest, I now don’t ride my horse without it – whether that’s out hacking, schooling at home, jumping or competing – and in all weathers. It gives me extra confidence while in the saddle to know that I have this added protection should the unexpected happen. The cost of having to replace the air cannister (around £20 each time) is enough to encourage me to try my utmost to stay in the saddle, but on the occasions when I’ve passed the point of no return, I do feel less concerned about hitting the deck and have suffered no serious injuries (only wounded pride and the odd bruise!) as a result of my falls.

Starting with the vest on its own, I was impressed with how lightweight and comfortable it was to wear. My previous experience with an airvest has been wearing a body protector and airvest together, so this feels much less restrictive and far lighter by comparison. However, if you are intending to compete in cross-country competitions, you would need to wear an approved body protector, then you can add an airvest over the top for added protection if you wish. For dressage and showjumping competitions, the airvest can be worn without a body protector. Airvests are also becoming a popular option for the hunting field.

The air canister that inflates the airvest when triggered is concealed into the vest on the right-hand side under a zip (shown below) and, although there is a little weight to it (about 150g for the 50cc cannister), once I was wearing the vest, I didn’t notice it.

The vest is fastened with a front zip and has elasticated mesh sides for a neat fit. It is made from a lightweight technical fabric with a breathable mesh lining, containing the inflatable airbags.

I am a UK size 8 and I am testing the XS size, which carries the 50cc canister. Other size vests require different sized canisters. The canisters are the screw-in type. I found it straight forward to replace the canister following the instructions in the user guide. I recommend keeping both the Allen key and a spare canister to hand so you can replace it as needed following an activation.

For the purpose of this review, I have also been supplied with a selection of outer layers to try. Some of these are designed so the airvest and the outer can be quickly and easily integrated into one garment, via the Zip’In system, which makes them both comfortable and very easy to wear.

Helite Airshell Prestige Vest Outer

This gilet is made from a softshell material, which is water repellent and windproof. I am testing the navy gilet with red/white trim, but it is also available with a black/white trim, and in sizes child L to adult XXL. The RRP starts at £117 for child L.

It has an attractive, sporty appearance that makes it ideal for daily wear outside the competition environment, whether riding at home or out training. I have received positive comments from fellow riders in both situations. It has a soft collar with matching material around the hips and smart piping over the shoulders. There is a discrete opening that the lanyard can be passed through to secure it easily to the saddle.

As one of Helite’s own brand outers, the airvest zips quickly and easily into the gilet, making it a breeze to use as a single piece of clothing. The gilet provides external protection to the airvest and is washable at 30°, which the airvest is not. The gilet has washed well in my washing machine, coming up looking as good as new.

I have worn this outer with the airvest combined for showjumping training, flatwork schooling and hacking. It was very comfortable in all cases. At no time did I feel impeded by the lanyard, or restricted by the vest/gilet. I liked the smart appearance and felt confident knowing that were I to part company with my horse, I would have the protection of the airvest to help me avoid injury. This helped me to remain relaxed in the saddle on occasions when my horse felt a little more spicy than usual!

It was far less restrictive than wearing a combined body protector with airvest and after riding I was cooler than I typically was having had a similar ride while wearing the combined option. I have also worn this outer with the airvest over my body protector while cross-country schooling successfully.

Helite Airjump Jacket Outer

This smart Helite-branded black show jacket is also designed so the airvest can be quickly and easily zipped inside to make it into a single item of clothing. It’s available in black, in child L to adult XXL, with an RRP of £320.

The jacket is fastened with a hidden zip, plus three H-branded brushed silver buttons/press studs in front, with a small disk on the back of the collar.

The jacket has pipped edges, two outside pockets with discrete zip fastenings, and there are two riding vents at the rear. There is a perforated section of material under the arms to improve breathability. It also has the small opening on the front to allow the airvest lanyard to pass through.

My initial impression is that it looks smart and is comfortable to wear. It is machine washable at 30degrees. I have not yet tried it in the saddle.

LotusRomeo for H show jacket

This stylish ladies show jacket is made from an extremely stretchy and lightweight soft mesh material. It is designed to be worn over the top of the Helite Zip’In 2 Airvest, but is not attached to it, leaving two separate garments.

The jacket is fastened by a concealed zip behind four plastic buttons. It has open-topped pockets on the front on both sides, double vent to the rear and the all-important opening to the front to allow the lanyard to pass through.

The fashionable cut is very close fitting, which is further accentuated by the material, meaning it is an attractive choice for a slim figure, but it is less flattering for anyone with natural lumps or bumps that they prefer not to show to the world. It also shows the slight extra bulk of the air jacket more than the black jacket with the thicker material.

I expect this jacket will be a great option for the summer months, thanks to its excellent breathability. It can also be worn on its own without the air jacket if you wish. Although Helite recommend that you wear the same size outer to the air vest, as this jacket is worn as a separate outer, I would recommend sizing up if you prefer a less closely fitted jacket.

Verdict

H&H Approved – Even without the outers, the Helite Zip’In 2 Airbag is a stylish option for anyone wanting extra protection while riding with the minimum of bulk and no restriction. The range of outers, which is far more extensive than those outlined above, makes it a great option for both leisure and competition riders. The only downside I can see is the price, but I believe it is an investment that will pay back in spades when it comes to rider confidence and safety.

THE “stigma” around wearing body protection in showjumping shows signs of decreasing – but more people need to follow suit, an A&E doctor believes.

A number of top riders have been seen wearing air jackets this summer, including at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) and the World Showjumping Championships.

But doctor Kate Ward, who has jumped up to 1.40m level, told H&H that in her day job, in the trauma unit of a Kent hospital, she sees people hurt in horse-related incidents every day. And although, she said, all those injured in falls had been wearing safety helmets, “the thing that astounds me is that only one patient I’ve seen in the last two years was wearing any kind of body protector”.

“I am not sure if this is coincidence or maybe the people wearing body protectors don’t come to A&E as much,” she said, adding that the one rider who was wearing one was unharmed, although she was in her seventies.

Kate herself started wearing a body protector first, after “a couple of near misses; falls where I couldn’t believe I wasn’t hurt”, then started looking into air jackets.

“I thought if they’re good enough for people coming off motorbikes, they’re probably quite a good idea if you fall off a horse,” she said, adding that the vests are far less bulky than early versions, to the point people now say they cannot see she is wearing hers.

Kate added that the turning point was when a horse’s bit snapped at home and he “bolted towards the concrete” from her unfenced arena. The horse turned left instead of right and she baled out onto the soft surface, but “after that thought ‘I’m going shopping.’”

She now does not like riding without it, but feels the stigma about body protection is still there in jumping.

“Why is there still this stigma regarding safety in this country?” she said. “Do people deem it demeaning to wear more protection? Are we stuck in the dark ages regarding tradition? There may be no clinical trial data that I know of regarding air jackets, but the logic speaks for itself. People need to take safety seriously. My conclusions are all observational, I just feel passionately about safety in equine sports, and if you saw the injuries I am faced with on a weekly basis, you would understand why. It can do no harm, only good, and anything that reduces the risk of serious injury should be considered essential.

“You are never too good to take safety seriously.”

Kate hopes to conduct an audit at work, to try to find some statistics and trends in riding falls.

One of the riders wearing an air vest at the RIHS was US-based Irishman Andrew Bourns, who told H&H that there is less stigma around wearing them in the US.

“A good friend of mine, [fellow Irish showjumper] Kevin Babington, broke his neck and was paralysed in a fall,” Andrew said. “After that happened, my mum insisted I started wearing one and Freejump [which makes his air vest] gave me full sponsorship. It gives you an enormous amount of protection.”

Andrew said he “very strongly” promotes the wearing of the vests. He uses his whenever he is jumping, including at home.

“All my clients wear them and anyone I’m close to,” he said. “My mum broke her neck in a horse accident and was in a wheelchair for eight years before she died, so it’s a very close-to- home subject for me. I’m very thankful for Freejump’s support and it’s important to draw attention to it. If it saves one life, or someone being badly injured, it’s totally worth it.”

Jodie Hall McAteer, who is also supported by Freejump and was wearing one of the company’s vets at Hickstead, told H&H: “It’s a dangerous sport and it’s easy to forget the risk involved every time you canter into the ring, so to have that extra level of protection and security is definitely worthwhile. I wasn’t sure at first, I was a bit sceptical, but you can’t really feel it when you’re wearing it. It’s so comfortable and light.

“You don’t see it so often, especially competing at the higher levels, but in January, I had a bad fall and wasn’t wearing one. I really hurt my neck and I thought, if I’d had something, had this [perhaps I wouldn’t have been injured]; I’d be silly not to.”

Zara Dickson, equine safety specialist for manufacturer Helite, told H&H there has been an increase in sales of vets to showjumpers this year.

She agrees there has been a stigma, also in the dressage and showjumping phases of eventing.

“It seems to be, ‘You need protection across country and nothing else,’ but there have been studies showing you’re more likely to have an accident schooling or hacking, and a lot of showjumpers have been buying them for schooling young horses at home,” she said. “We’ve seen a sharp increase.”

Ms Dickson added that as a company, Helite does not want people to feel they have been “sold a product”, but instead explains why they need the protection and how they will benefit.

“We’ve got testimonials from people saying the [jackets] have saved their lives,” she said. “I had one mother who’d bought one for her child and the first time out, she fell off showjumping. She messaged to say, ‘Thank you so much.’ It’s difficult trying to get the safety message across without sounding like you’re trying to sell to them, but people are choosing them now in showjumping, from Pony Club to top riders, which is nice to see.”

One of the riders flying the flag for wearing body protection in top-level showjumping says that if one person can be saved from death or serious injury, that will be worth it in itself.

A number of the competitors in the international classes at last week’s Royal International Horse Show were seen in body protection. They are not compulsory for showjumping under national or international rules, but those riders H&H spoke to believe they are the future.

Andrew Bourns, who represented Ireland in the Nations Cup on Friday (29 July) and jumped a superb round for just one time-fault in Sunday’s King George V Gold Cup, told H&H that there is less stigma around wearing them in the US, where he is based, than there is here.

“A good friend of mine, [fellow Irish showjumper] Kevin Babington, broke his neck and was paralysed in a fall,” Andrew told H&H. “After that happened, my mum insisted I started wearing one and Freejump [which makes his air vest] gave me full sponsorship. It gives you an enormous amount of protection.”

Andrew said he “very strongly” promotes the wearing of the vests. He uses his whenever he is jumping, including at home.

Jodie is also sponsored and supported by Freejump, which makes the air vest she wears.

“I wasn’t sure at first, I was a bit sceptical,” she said. “I’d never worn one before but you can’t really feel it when you’re wearing it. It’s so comfortable and light, and easy to slip on and off.

“You don’t see it so often, especially competing at the higher levels, but in January, I had a bad fall and wasn’t wearing one. I really hurt my neck and I thought, if I’d had something, had this [perhaps I wouldn’t have been injured]; it’s definitely worth doing, and I’d be silly not to.”

Extensive research is under way taking a holistic look at spinal injuries in jockeys, with a view to preventing these in future.

Physiotherapist and University of Bath PhD student Daloni Lucas gave an overview of the projects that come under the umbrella of the analysis of prevention of spinal injuries in horse racing, at the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) conference (26 April). The research, funded by the Racing Foundation, is a collaboration between Bath University, the British Horseracing Authority and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board.

“In racing, there’s very little evidence that investigates the mechanisms of spinal injury,” Ms Lucas told H&H.

“So for example, there are studies that report the epidemiology, which is the sort of incidence and prevalence of spinal injuries in equestrian sports. But no previous researchers look to the aetiology [causes or reasons] to get an understanding of exactly how and why the injuries are happening, not just reporting that they are and the rate of injury.”

She added: “First, you need to understand how big the problem is and then you need to understand exactly why they’re happening. And with those two things, you can look at prevention strategies, but without understanding why they’re occurring, you can’t actually inform injury prevention.”

Individual studies beneath the umbrella include analysing 700 videos of falls, taking into factors including race type, environmental conditions such as the ground and the fence, and a person’s health and medical history alongside looking at the biomechanics of the fall itself. For every person who sustains a spinal injury in a fall, the study will look at four who did not, to try to pin down the significant variables that contribute to injury.

The next step, which will be undertaken by another PhD student, will be computerised spinal injury simulations.

The research has also led Ms Lucas to explore the current use of safety wear in racing, which is also helping in the development of body protectors and a push towards education of how they should fit.

Ms Lucas found that “alarmingly”, 64.3% of jockeys who responded had not been fitted for their current body protectors, and more than a third of those tested were not wearing the right size.

This has led to “lots of positives”, including adding weight to a push on education and also on getting fresh feedback from jockeys in terms of the flexibility and comfort, alongside protection they want and need in a body protector.

Racing’s body protector rules changed in 2017 in Ireland and 2018 in Britain, increasing the minimum standard from BETA level one to level two.

Racesafe, which produces BETA level two-standard body protectors, has produced prototypes informed by the research and the jockeys’ feedback.

Racesafe’s James How told H&H the research is “good timing”.

“From our point of view, the technology and the materials have developed and progressed sufficiently from 2017/18, which means we can look at developing an updated model,” he said.

“Now we are at the stage where we can offer the same level two protection in a new product that is lighter, more comfortable and a bit thinner.”

He added that Racesafe offers a vastly expanded range of sizes to suit different body shapes, and in-house alterations to ensure the garments fit well.

Racesafe’s retailers are all trained, and the firm is looking to educate jockeys further on licensing courses and valets, who care for and often procure equipment for their riders.

“[Correct fit is] critical,” said Mr How, adding that this covers protection, comfort and flexibility.

“There’s no way around it. It is all very well us developing a product that’s offering a certain level of protection and comfort, but if it isn’t covering the areas it needs to, it of course isn’t going to offer the same level of protection.”

A rider whose life was saved in a bad fall by her safety equipment has secured a £100,000 investment for the “innovative” body protector she has designed.

Finnish Esmerelda Bright, a former international showjumper, is the founder of Armaros, which has developed flexible “body armour” for riders, and has secured the backing from the British Design Fund.

Esmerelda said her life was saved by the body protector she was wearing at the time of her rotational showjumping fall in 2007, but that like other riders, she felt existing equipment was rigid and uncomfortable, and could affect balance. Having looked into the issue among equestrians, she found many riders were put off wearing body protectors by the same issues.

“I had always found body protectors to be very uncomfortable, but my accident really hit home to me the importance of wearing one,” she said.

“When I started asking fellow riders about their experiences, I quickly found that most riders don’t wear one because they find them incredibly stiff and restrictive. That was a lightbulb moment for me.”

Esmerelda looked into possible solutions as she was taking part in a design course backed by the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. She worked with engineers to create a material using “biomimicry” design, inspired by natural structures.

“The result is the creation of a material technology that is flexible yet incredibly supportive, inspired by the human spine,” an Armaros spokesman said.

Esmerelda added that it is important the design is accessible and suitable for mass manufacture, so as many people as possible can use it.

“After many iterations, we have managed to engineer a product that works with existing manufacturing techniques and which also has potential for many other markets,” she said. “I’m excited to have the backing of the British Design Fund and their support in bringing our design to market.”

It is hoped the product will be on the market within a year, following extensive safety testing. It will be aimed at riders, although the hope is to expand into other sports and industries such as defence.

British Design Fund CEO Damon Bonser said: “The investment committee were really impressed by Esmeralda’s strong knowledge of the equestrian sector, which makes up a large percentage of Armaros’ initial market.

“We were also impressed by her determination to succeed. Armaros has huge potential to scale and a clear and compelling purpose. We look forward to working closely with Esmeralda and the team, to bring the product to market and start saving lives.”

Rebecca Penny on controversial rule changes and an uncertain M&M final

Whiel it’s good news that Covid-19 vaccinations are being rolled out, the chances of getting showing back to its full glory for 2021 look slim – at least for the early part of the season.

I sympathise with show organisers, who are no doubt in a quandary. It’s important that we all understand these are real human beings trying their best and, like most of us, they are totally in the dark as to what impact restrictions will have on event plans.

Perhaps this year we will see a move in qualifiers being allocated to events that do not rely on ticket sales or public admission to go ahead. This could give us a fighting chance to run behind closed doors without too much disruption when it’s safe to do so.

End of an era

I was sad to see the announcement over the loss of the national veterans final due to development work at Olympia. The competition has been a huge success for Senior Showing and Dressage Ltd (SSADL) and the organisers have done a wonderful job raising the profile of older horses who still thrive on an outing. While it’s certainly the end of an era, I look forward to seeing the final continue at the Royal International (RIHS).

However, the news leaves native enthusiasts questioning if the Heritage final will meet the same fate. We’ve yet to be informed of any changes so I’m keeping my fingers firmly crossed that we will be fortunate enough still to be able to enjoy the Christmas final.

Change can sometimes be refreshing and I welcome the amendment to the format of all pony RIHS qualifiers for 2021, which will now be judged without marks. Personally, I’m all for ditching the mark sheets.

I can see several positives in this move, as well as it making my trips home trying to analyse the numbers far less frustrating. First, it could encourage people to add a little flair to their individual performance instead of playing safe in order not to drop marks. Second, it will potentially reintroduce the final walk-round, which I believe puts much more emphasis on the walk – a pace sometimes overlooked – and on manners.

Another bonus is that event organisers may find more people would be willing to officiate without the added pressure of a maths test!

Controversy

Another rule change, affecting the working hunter sector, has been more controversial. This is the mandatory wearing of body protectors, introduced for British Show Pony Society affiliated classes.

It’s a far cry from what members wanted when asked for their opinion at the end of last year, and judging from several posts on social media, it has left many with a sour taste.

While I appreciate the society aims to help prevent accidents and thus any further strain on the NHS, any rule should surely stipulate the standard a body protector should meet. This seems to have been omitted from the wording, leaving loopholes.

Currently, you are unlikely to visit a shop to have a body protector fitted by someone qualified to do so. General guidance is that it should be worn over a thin base layer, so although some tters will advise on fitting over a thin showing jacket, should we be looking at overall attire for working hunter classes?

Even lightweight tweed is usually bulkier than other fabrics – and as one fitter I consulted said, showing people won’t wear body protectors under jackets because they don’t like the way they “spoil the line”.

I fear that with the increase in number of independently run shows, some of which may have different rules, the society risks alienating people and losing entries, as members’ opinions are perceived to be overlooked.

Perhaps more informative communications with some rationale or explanation as to how the decision came about would have been better received in this case.

A new British Show Pony Society rule means all working hunter riders will have to wear body protectors this year. H&H finds out more, and speaks to those on both sides of the fence

A NEW British Show Pony Society (BSPS) rule requiring all riders to wear body protectors in working hunter classes has sparked debate.

The 2021 rule states that body protectors must be worn when jumping in any working hunter pony or horse classes, including the practice ring, at BSPS-affiliated shows.

BSPS company secretary Karen Ward told H&H body protectors had always been “strongly recommended” in those classes but the society made them mandatory following the first lockdown in March last year.

“We felt we should protect the NHS and reduce the risk of people getting an injury that could force them to go to hospital.

Towards the end of 2020 we debated whether we should put it in the rulebook and decided at this present time it is the right thing to do,” she said.

“Although showjumping doesn’t have the rule, I think what people forget is a lot of our fences are very solid compared to a showjumping pole. We took advice from our medical officer Nicola Shaibel, who said that while wearing a body protector probably wouldn’t reduce the risk of a serious injury, it would certainly reduce the number of injuries we were likely to have when people fall off.”

Ms Ward said the organisation was aware some members were against the rule but that the decision had not been taken lightly.

“Some adults feel they should have a choice but as a membership organisation we can’t say its OK for over-18s not to wear body protectors and make under-18s wear them – we have to protect all our members, not just children,” she said.

“We’ve had several members say this is the right thing to do. The problem is, if you don’t make it mandatory people won’t wear them. We will review the rule after 12 months but we felt for the health, safety and welfare of all our members it was of the utmost importance that we reduce the risk of injury thereby negating the need for A&E, especially during Covid.”

Competitor and BSPS star judge Vicki Smith told H&H she does not agree with the rule.

“As an adult I should have the choice,” she said. “BSPS said the rule is to protect the NHS which I fully understand, but no other society has brought this rule in and there’s no evidence a body protector will protect the NHS. I’m worried for BSPS area shows because people might choose to go elsewhere where they don’t have to wear one.”

A parent, who did not want to be named, told H&H she is “very much” in favour of the rule.

“Given everything that’s going on at the moment with coronavirus, if we can do anything to reduce the risk of hospitalisation I think we should be doing it,” she said.

The mother of a teenager who suffered serious crush injuries in a rotational fall is calling for body protectors to be mandatory in showjumping.

Danni Thomas, 14, usually wears her body protector but forgot to take it with her to a Pony Club winter league showjumping event last November.

Her mother Gail had taken Danni’s brother to a motocross event so was not there when 18-year-old Ernie stumbled after a jump and fell.

“He’s a phenomenal pony; an absolute saint, but he just tripped and landed on her,” Gail told H&H.

“People at the show were very good, they called an ambulance, and called me – I’ve never driven so fast in my life – and I got to Alder Hey hospital just as the air ambulance did.”

As Danni is young, her ribs are more flexible and had not broken, but her heart and lungs had been badly damaged – pictures of the fall show Ernie landed mainly on the left side of her chest. Having been treated by paramedics at the show centre, she was kept on a ventilator for a week, and in hospital three days more.

Danni is now back at school and on the way to a full recovery but Gail said she has scar tissue in her lungs, and will always have to be aware that her lung capacity has changed.

“The consultant said a body protector wouldn’t necessarily have saved her, but the damage could have been limited,” Gail said. “He asked why they weren’t compulsory, and I thought ‘good question’.

“She’d gone to the show with a very good friend, who doesn’t know I insist on a body protector – Danni’s old enough to know what’s right – and she was rushing around to get ready, and just forgot it.”

Ernie is also recovering, but Gail said he will have a quieter life now, while Danni has returned to riding on a younger pony.

“This was just a tiny stumble on a sweetheart of a pony,” Gail said. “It’s not something you’d ever think about but my friend who saw the pictures said it frightened the life out of her and her son always wears a body protector now.

“They’re compulsory for cross-country but not showjumping, which seems a bit daft.”

Pony Club interim chief executive Marcus Capel said: “The Pony Club takes the safety of its members and the welfare of their ponies very seriously. We seek advice from national governing bodies (British Showjumping, British Eventing, British Dressage etc) and align our rules with theirs where possible and appropriate. Our sports committees meet regularly to review the sport’s rules and discuss the rationale behind any suggested changes and the wider consequences and impact of these.

“I appreciate that this incident was an unfortunate accident and am pleased to hear that the member in question is on the mend and wish her well.”

Body protectors manufactured to a new safety standard will go on sale from 1 October, the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) has confirmed.

Riders have been urged not to panic as BETA is continuing to advise all riding organisations to accept both the 2009 and the new 2018 BETA body protector standards “for the forseeable future”.

Most organisations have recently updated their rules to only accept body protectors marked 2009 or any later revision to the standard — such as this new BETA 2018 label.

Body protectors holding the BETA 2000 logo are out of date and cannot be worn under most rules.

British Eventing, Point-to-Point Authority, British Horseracing Authority, British Team Chasing and British Riding Clubs rules all state that body protectors must comply with BETA 2009 or subsequent standard, which would include BETA 2018.

The Pony Club has confirmed that it will continue to accept purple label 2009 body protectors for the next six years as well as the new BETA 2018 standard.

“The Pony Club will continue to require Level 3 of either standard for cross-country,” added the spokesman.

The new BETA level 3 logo is Cambridge blue, a change from the purple logo that has been used for more than 20 years.

“The disciplines that set a minimum standard for body protection have now changed their rules to only accept garments marked 2009 for next year and all have indicated that they will accept the 2018 version when available,” said a statement on the BETA website.

“They will continue to accept 2009 garments for years to come as was the case with the 2000 version but no time limit has been set.

“It is likely however that they will continue to allow the 2009 version for at least the next six or more years which equates to the typical life of a garment.

“BETA continues to advise all riding organisations to accept both 2009 and 2018 BETA standards for the foreseeable future in their rules.”

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced yesterday (28 June) that the minimum standard of body protectors will be increased from BETA level 1 to level 2. Body protectors must also comply with EN 13158: 2009 or 2018 safety standards.

This will come into force for all jockeys riding under Rules from 1 October 2018.

The Point-to-Point Authority (PPA) confirmed to H&H that the change has been “agreed in principle” for pointing fixtures from the start of next season, but is awaiting final approval from the PPA board.

Irish racing authorities introduced the increased safety standard in 2017 and France is expected to follow suit next year.

This is the first change to body protector regulations under BHA Rules since 2015.

A statement from the BHA said the organisation had “elected to wait and monitor the situation in Ireland to see if any unusual patterns of injury emerged owing to the new design”.

No such patterns have been recorded and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board’s senior medical officer, Dr Adrian McGoldrick, has endorsed the move to level two vests.

The BHA has allowed an extra 1lb allowance to take into account the extra weight that comes with the added protection.

“I am delighted that the level 2 vests will be introduced as they offer enhanced protection compared to the level 1 vest, and the extra weight allowance is very welcome,” said the BHA’s chief medical adviser, Dr Jerry Hill.

“Through the use of the BHA digital archive with our academic research partners at the universities of Bath and Sydney, Australia, we will be monitoring falls patterns to see how we might introduce further policies to reduce injuries in racing, with an emphasis on spinal injuries.”

Aidan Coleman and Ruby Walsh are among the jockeys who have welcomed the move.

“I had to wear [a level 2 body protector] when I rode in Ireland about 18 months ago and when I got back to England I immediately ordered two, and have been wearing them ever since,” said Aidan.

Ruby added he believes there is a “huge improvement” between the level 1 and level 2 body protectors.

“From taking heavy falls riding in steeplechase races, to horses landing on you, standing on you, kicking you, I find the level 2 provides way more protection,” he said.

Team chasing rules on hat standards and body protector standards have been updated ahead of the 2018 season.

British Team Chasing has brought its rules in line with British Eventing, the Pony Club and British Riding Clubs.

Hats must meet any of the following standards:

• PAS 015 (1998 or 2011) with a kitemark
• VG1 with a kitemark
• ASTM F1163: 2004 onwards with a SEI mark
• SNELL E2001 or E2016 with a SNELL label and number
• AS/NZS 3838, from 2006 onwards

Hats must be tagged with either the British Eventing/British Riding Clubs/Pony Club-approved hat aqua tag or with British Team Chasing’s own hat tag.

“It is compulsory for all competitors and grooms to wear crash helmets to current recognised safety standards at all times when mounted at any team chase course — such hats must not have a fixed peak,” adds a statement from British Team Chasing.

“All competitors must also wear a British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA 2009) approved and appropriately labelled Level 3 (purple label) body protector, manufactured in the year 2009 or after.

“A body protector of this nature is also required when competitors are wearing air jackets of any make.”

Racing body protectors vary in the level of protection they give, so competitors are urged to check theirs is of the correct standard for team chasing rules.

The season kicks off with its warm-up event at LandS Eventing at Dallas Burston Polo Club in Warwickshire on 11 March. The first team chase of the year is hosted by the Beaufort at Sherston in Wiltshire on 18 March.

British Eventing has also updated its body protector rules for the 2018 season.

Competitors must wear a BETA 2009 level three body protector, or an Exo Body Cage, for cross-country.

Changes to faller and jacket regulations are among British Eventing’s (BE) rule changes for 2018.

H&H has already reported news of updates to body protector standards, changes to hat tags and the prize money and entry fee increases.

BE has today (20 December) released a full summary of changes to the BE Rules and Members’ Handbook which will come into effect from 1 January.

Competitors up to and including intermediate level are no longer “confined” to black, dark blue or tweed jacket — they may choose “any single conservative colour in muted tones”, or can opt to ride without a jacket altogether.

If a rider falls during the showjumping phase, the bell will be rung and the clock stopped while they remount and the jump is rebuilt — six seconds will be added to the competitor’s time and the 45-second rule (elimination for failing to jump the next obstacle within 45 seconds) will not apply.

The bell will be rung and the clock restarted once the competitor has remounted.

Riders falling on the cross-country course must now be checked by a paramedic or doctor before they are allowed to remount and continue.

Also new for this year is the rule that competitors must seek permission from the organiser before bringing a non-competing horse on to the event site. On arrival, they must then register that horse with the secretary, who will give him a number, which must be displayed as a bridle number — provided by the person responsible for the horse.

Pony Club members will also be able to use a qualifying result in the 100cm section at the Pony Club Championships as one of their minimum eligibility requirements for BE novice events.

Another amendment is that any level of horse can compete at BE105 level. This was previously restricted to grade three and grade four horses (horses with up to 20 BE points).

The major changes are as follows and full details can be found here:

• BE105 classes will be open to all grades of horses.
• BE will no longer permit the use of BETA Level 3 body protectors with a 2000 label, although Exo BodyCages protectors will be allowed. If an ExoBody Cage is worn, this must be declared to the event secretary prior to the cross-country phase.
• At intermediate level (excluding the intermediate championships) and below, jacket colours are no longer confined to black, dark blue or tweed and may be any single conservative colour in muted tones, or, competitors may choose to ride without jackets. Competitors may choose to wear a fitted waistcoat in any conservative colour in muted tones. If no jacket is worn a suitable long/short sleeved shirt that fastens at the neck (white or cream and not bright or multi-coloured) must be worn.
• A competitor who falls during the cross-country phase must not remount until they have been checked by a paramedic or doctor.
• In the event of a rider fall during the showjumping round, the bell will be rung and the clock will be stopped while the rider remounts and the jump rebuilt (if necessary). Six seconds will be added to the competitor’s time. The 45 second rule will not apply.
• Pony Club members who achieved a qualifying result at the PC100 eventing championships in the current or preceding year may use this as one of their minimum eligibility requirements towards competing at BE novice level. Proof must be provided to BE as this will not be automatically recognised by the system.
• The “withdrawal date” has been renamed the “entry amendment date” to avoid misconception that refunds are due to those who withdraw by this date. Please see the refund policy in the event schedule for information on refunds for withdrawn entries.
  Entries made pending qualifications will be subject to the minimum refund policy.
  Withdrawals are final and may not be retracted.
• Competitors wishing to bring non-competing horse(s) must seek permission from the event organisers and, once on site, competitors must register their non-competing horse(s) with the event secretary who will issue the horse with a number which must be worn by the horse at all times. A bridle number must be provided by the person responsible for the horse.
• British Eventing, British Riding Clubs and the Pony Club have unified their hat standards resulting in a single hat tag being accepted across BE, the Pony Club and British Riding Club events in 2018. The new ‘aqua’ coloured hat tag will carry the logo of the body that checks the hat.
• BE will no longer accept the AS/NZS 3838 [helmet] standard prior to 2006.
• Rowel spurs will be permitted in all phases (although not for young horse classes). Rowels may be horizontal or vertical but must be smooth, round and free to rotate.
• Wavy snaffles will no longer be permitted for dressage.
• Prize money and entry fees have increased by 5%.
• Three new dressage tests have been introduced (BE90 championship test, BE100 championship test and BE novice test).
• New eligibility rules for the Scottish Championships have been devised.
• From 1st January 2018 personal accident insurance will no longer be a benefit for full members. A statement from BE added: “This insurance offered limited benefit to members and therefore very few were able to claim under the policy, however a comprehensive offering is available via KBIS which BE members can enjoy at a competitive rate.”

Riders will be allowed to wear Exo BodyCages at British Eventing (BE) competitions after changes to body protector rules come into force next year.

From 1 January 2018, only body protectors carrying the BETA level three 2009 label, or any subsequent standard, will be allowed at BE competitions.

This raised concerns from riders who wear the Exo BodyCage that they would no longer be allowed to wear the anti-crush device in affiliated competitions because it is only approved to BETA 2000 level three standard (news, 6 October 2016). The company that designed the product ceased to exist in September 2008 with the patent donated to the Riding for the Disabled Association.

The safety device is designed to protect a rider’s chest by withstanding the weight of a horse in the event of a fall.

However a statement from BE today (7 December) confirmed the organisation will allow riders to continue to wear the product.

“Any wearer of the BodyCage should be encouraged to inspect their garment for wear and tear particularly to the foam panels and to the side fastenings,” said a statement from BE.

“Garments should not be worn if they have suffered any damage as this could seriously impair the protection offered.

“The competitor should also declare to the secretary that they will be wearing the Exo BodyCage so that officials can be alerted to this.”

Jennifer Galuszka credits the cage from saving her from serious injury in a horse fall in 2013.

She told H&H she has been in contact with BE over the matter and is “delighted” with the decision.

“I would not wish to continue eventing without wearing the Exo and am delighted at BE’s response,” she added.

British Eventing (BE) is updating its body protector rules from 2018.

The organisation has revealed that from 1 January 2018, body protectors carrying the BETA 2000 level three label will not be allowed at its affiliated competitions.

Only BETA 2009 level three body protectors, or any later revisions to the standard, will be allowed.

The decision follows a similar move by the Pony Club, whose updated rules on body protectors came into force this year.

“No garments with the BETA 2000 standard have been produced since 2011, making any body protector with this label a minimum of five years old,” said a statement from BE.

“Following discussions with the BE risk management committee and advice from BETA (British Equestrian Trade Association), body protectors with this 2000 label will not be allowed for use at BE competitions from 1st January 2018.”

BETA’s executive director Claire Williams praised BE for giving riders “plenty of notice”.

“BETA 2000 has served us well since its introduction in 2000, however now there are garments potentially being used that are up to 16 years old, so well past their “use-by” date,” she said.

“General wear and tear over long periods as well as falls can have a detrimental effect on the ability of a garment to offer the protection needed so the change to the BE rules is welcomed.”

Safety updates

New hat standard rules were brought by BE, the Pony Club, Riding Clubs, British Horse Society and British Showjumping at the beginning of this year.

This followed the withdrawal of the European Equestrian Riding Helmet standard (BS) EN 1384 from European legislation last year.

British Dressage has also removed (BS) EN 1384 from the list of acceptable protective standards in its 2017 rule book, which will come into effect from 1 January 2017.

Body protectors worn by all competitors at Chepstow Horse Trials on Saturday (4 July) will be checked by British Eventing (BE) to ensure they comply with the organisation’s safety standards.

The move follows inquest findings that Canadian eventer Jordan McDonald was wearing a body protector that did not conform to BE’s rules when he died at Nunney Horse Trials last June. The vest he was wearing was made by American brand, Tipperary.

Jordan had a rotational fall at fence 7a on the cross-country course and the rider suffered “fatal chest injuries”, the inquest found.

Body protectors worn at BE events must be British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) approved and appropriately labelled “Level 3 body protector”, with the year 2000 or 2009 shown on the label, manufactured in the year 2000 or after.

Competitors are required to bring their body protectors to the secretary’s tent when they collect their numbers at Chepstow.

“BE is conducting a 100% body protector check at Chepstow on Saturday 4 July as part of our ongoing review of all safety rules and procedures surrounding a riders personal protective equipment (PPE),” a BE spokesman told H&H.

“It will enable BE to assess how well members understand the rules and what is required.”

Earlier this year riders called for more vigilant checks from organisers and BE.

Daisy Berkeley, the athlete representative on the FEI eventing committee, told H&H at the time: “In Britain we are required to ride in a certain standard of body protector.

“But our body protectors are not tagged and checked consistently in the way our helmets are.

“Although we need to be responsible for our own safety, riders are not always the best at keeping up to date on improvements in standards.

“Clearly the tags cannot be monitored easily in the way helmet tags are, due to the addition of cross-country colours and airbags over the top, so spot checks when you pick up your numbers at the beginning of the season, and at random events during the season should improve awareness. We all want to do our best to stay safe.”

Riders are calling for international standardisation of body protectors after the inquest into the death of Jordan McDonald at last year’s Nunney Horse Trials reported that the Canadian event rider was wearing a body protector that would not have met British Eventing’s (BE) safety standards.

Jordan (pictured, top), 30, was riding Only Me in a novice section on 14 June 2014. The pair had a rotational fall at fence 7a on the cross-country course and Jordan suffered “fatal chest injuries”, the inquest last week (12 May) found.

When returning a verdict of accidental death, Tim Hayden, assistant coroner for East Somerset, said: “There were multiple fractures on each side of the ribcage, four on one side and five on the other, and a laceration of the lung which made the process of resuscitation very difficult and subsequently impossible.”

Accident and emergency consultant Dr Michael Whitlock, who was on duty at the event, said: “The area where the lung was damaged probably had no protection. It is difficult to predict the severity of the injuries if a Class Three [BETA standard] body protector had been worn.”

Dr Whitlock confirmed to H&H that Jordan “was not wearing a body protector that conformed to any recognised international standard”.

He added: “He was wearing a high-standard Charles Owen hat that was markedly damaged but he had no brain injury so the helmet did its job.”

The coroner confirmed to H&H that Jordan had not been wearing an air jacket.

No global standard

While British Eventing (BE) has clear rules on the standard of body protector which must be worn — and has announced that it will review the current rules following this inquest — the FEI has no rules on the subject.

The 2015 FEI eventing rule book only states, in reference to cross-country: “Body protectors are compulsory for this test.”

Bruce Haskell, of the International Eventing Riders Association, said the group had “been pushing the FEI for a minimum standard of body protectors for some time”.

“We accept that eventing is a high-risk sport, but there are two areas — head protection and body protection — that can help reduce this risk, and tougher regulation should be put in place,” he told H&H.

“We are wholly behind BE’s efforts to improve safety standards and wish the FEI would follow suit.”

An FEI spokesman told H&H they couldn’t say more until they had seen the BE review.

“We would be very interested to study it, but won’t be able to comment on the findings before that,” she said, but added that body protectors are expected to be reviewed as part of the FEI risk-management programme.

Jordan’s sister, Shannon Maas, said safety is extremely important to the family and that her brother “was not wearing substandard body protection”.

“He was wearing a Tipperary vest, which is a well-known North American brand,” she said. “My feeling is that the United States Eventing Association and Equine Canada should follow what BE has done and make the highest standard of body protector a requirement in their rulebook. Then all organisations should develop a method to assure that the rider’s body protector meets this standard prior to competition.”

Shandiss McDonald, Jordan’s wife, said they had “no idea” that the protector wasn’t approved in the UK.

Equine Canada rules state, similar to the FEI: “A body protective vest must be worn,” but doesn’t specify a standard.

Better checks?

“But our body protectors are not tagged and checked consistently in the way our helmets are. Although we need to be responsible for our own safety, riders are not always the best at keeping up to date on improvements in standards. Spot checks when you pick up your numbers at the beginning of the season, and at random events, could improve awareness.”

Dr Whitlock added: “Although it would not be so easy to tag body protectors it wouldn’t be impossible, but it is up to organisers and BE to see if that’s feasible.”

A mother is calling for all parents to ensure their children are wearing proper safety wear after her daughter avoided life-threatening injuries as the result of being kicked in the face by her pony.

Angharad Jones’ daughter, Megan, was practising a dressage test on her pony, Mossy, on 17 January, when the animal lost its balance and fell. Mossy then spooked and kicked out, catching the child in the face.

Megan, aged six, fractured the left side of her face, and has had surgery to insert plates to rebuild her eye socket.

“I’m glad I insist she wears a body protector and hat every time she rides — these are part of the reason Megan is still with us,” said Mrs Jones.

“I want to encourage other parents to have their children fitted with safety standard hats and body protectors.

“You can’t put a price on safety. Megan hated wearing body protectors, so we had a bright pink one made for her, and now she loves wearing it.

“We can’t wrap children up in cotton wool, but we can protect them with quality, fitted safety wear.”

Mrs Jones said Megan is already asking to ride again.

“She’s still in pain, but she’s very cheerful,” she added.

Sheila Hardy from the British Horse Society (BHS) echoed this warning.

“Megan and her mum appear to have taken every precaution to keep the rider safe and, while she has suffered some awful injuries, had she not been wearing the appropriate safety wear, it could have been so much worse,” she told H&H.

“It just goes to show how crucial it is that we make the right decision over the safety equipment that we wear — not only purchasing adequate protection but also ensuring that it is correctly fitted — and most importantly, that we actually wear it at all times when we are riding.”

But hat-wearing is not yet universal while riding at home, despite increasing calls for safety awareness.

The story of an 18-year-old whose life was saved by his hat received a huge response on HorseandHound.co.uk last year.

James Hooker suffered serious facial injuries in a fall at home. He came off after a jump and hit the manège fence. The horse then kicked his head.

The doctor who treated James said that he would almost certainly have died had he not been wearing his hat.

“I can’t understand why people think they’re too good to fall off. Horses are unpredictable and have a mind of their own,” he said.

A new body protector has been added to the Rodney Powell range.

The Superflex Contour is wipe clean, has a front zip fastening and can be adjusted at the shoulder and waist.

The Point Two Air Jacket that Piggy French wore at the European Championships in Fontainebleau last year is up for grabs in a raffle for Spinal Research.

The unique Great Britain team kit inflatable jacket, which has been signed by Piggy and fellow top eventers, William Fox-Pitt, Oli Townend, Mary King, Nicola Wilson, Lucy Wiegersma and Tina Cook, is being raffled as part of the Saddle Up for Spinal Research campaign, aimed specifically at riders.

“By buying a raffle ticket you can help us fund our groundbreaking research into spinal cord repair, so we can get people who are paralysed walking and riding again,” said Isabel Robinson, specialist fundraiser at Spinal Research.

It is hoped the raffle will raise £5,000 for the charity and organisers say they are already halfway towards their target.

Owners of the fastest inflating Point Two jackets are being asked to send them back to the manufacturer for a safety check.

Point Two has voluntarily recalled all ProAir jackets with new, faster 0.10 trigger systems following a manufacturing fault.

A statement on the company’s website says: “Unfortunately, one batch of triggers has not been made to the required standard or strength. In some instances the trigger has started to crack.”

The very latest ProAir jackets contain the new trigger system — which inflates the jacket within 0.1 second — and some riders had opted to upgrade their older jacket, too.

Point Two says it cannot pinpoint which batch of triggers is faulty, so has chosen to recall all ProAir jackets fitted with the 0.10 trigger system “to ensure there are no faulty items left on the market”.

Owners are asked to send their entire jacket back — minus the CO2 canister. Point Two says it will cover all postage and packaging costs.

Point Two airbag jackets inflate when a rider falls, protecting the all important areas of the body, the collar of the neck, ribs and coccyx.

Body protectors that conform to the revised European safety standard could be on the market by the end of the year and a new body protector for carriage driving is to be introduced.

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) has adopted the revision to the EN13158/BETA 2000 standard for body protectors agreed by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) in November. But BETA was quick to say the revision is just a “tweak” of the old one.

BETA chief executive Claire Williams told H&H: “We don’t want people to think garments conforming to the BETA 2000 standard are not safe.

“Impact absorption is the same,” she said, adding that the revision reflected improvements, such as extra padding over zips, which some manufacturers have adopted already.

Protectors that conform to the revised standard BETA 2009 should be on the market by the end of the year.

KC Sport, which makes the Rodney Powell brand, and Airowear are also going to make a completely new body protector for carriage driving, following the creation of a standard for the sport by BETA and the CEN.

The Airowear driving body protector will be shorter in the back, as drivers have a seated position, and will allow them the movement necessary to handle their horses.

Q: My daughter has just had a kidney transplant. We need to protect the kidney and her abdomen area when she starts riding again. Have you any ideas how this could be achieved?

JG, Gloucestershire

According to NHS Direct, around three months after surgery most transplant recipients are able to lead fairly normal lives and can return to work. If your daughter’s doctor considers her to be fit enough to return to riding, there are several products that could help protect the back and abdomen area.

To protect your daughter when she is simply around the horses, you could invest in the Mountain Horse Bodyguard Jacket (£163.95), which looks like a normal, waterproof riding coat but features detachable, shock absorbing protective pads for the chest, shoulders, elbows, spine, hips and lumbar regions.

Body protectors

Roger Cooper is the newly-appointed chairman of the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) body protector committee and is managing director of Rodney Powell Body Armour. He has come across cases like your daughter’s before.

“In my experience of patients who wished to continue riding after a kidney transplant, the transplanted organ was positioned in the lower abdomen/stomach area,” he said.

“Obviously, normal BETA level three body protectors can’t offer any protection here when sized correctly.

“Despite the fact that Rodney Powell Body Armour is available in 10 body lengths, six width fittings and four back lengths, the only way we have been able to offer protection for transplanted organs is to make a separate impact pad of BETA level three shock absorbing foam, shaped to sit over the lower abdomen,” Roger explained. “This pad was attached to the front of the body protector by a hinge of fabric, allowing the rider to have normal freedom of movement and some reassurance.

“However, as we have no means of proving the capabilities of such a pad, we made sure that each of the aforementioned users discussed the matter with their surgeon before taking up riding again.

“No body protector manufacturer can possibly say whether a garment can absolutely protect a transplanted organ and, as this is an impact zone that has not been researched, your daughter should think very carefully about the dangers involved before continuing with her riding.”

Safety standards

Make sure any body protector you choose is fitted correctly and meets current standards. The BETA 2000 level three standard is advised for normal riding and competitions.

Recently launched on to the equestrian market are inflatable products that originate from motorcycle garments and feature a lanyard attached to the saddle that releases a gas canister for inflation. Research is ongoing.

The Exo BodyCage body protector is facing an uncertain future despite being credited with saving an event rider’s life.

The makers of the Exo BodyCage, which was designed to protect a rider from being crushed by a horse, says only “a few hundred” of their body protectors have been sold because it has not been welcomed by the industry.

The designers are cutting their “six-figure” losses and donating the patent for the body protector to the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).

“Too many people opposed it too strongly — and no one has had the guts to stand up and say everyone should wear it,” said Alasdair Kirk, co-director of the Exo BodyCage company.

“Untrue rumours have spread that it wasn’t safe, that you can’t roll in it and, as a result, it has sold very few.”

The Exo BodyCage was designed by engineer Matthew Asprey after he witnessed the fatal fall of Simon Long at Burghley in 1999.

Mr Asprey and his business partner Mr Kirk spent £1million developing the concept, and sold a licence to Woof Wear to manufacture the finished product.

The body protector went on sale in 2005, but was greeted with caution by some doctors.

“Hyperextension of the neck [whiplash] is what doctors are worried about,” said Ted Adams, of Doctors at Events, a company that provides medical assistance on cross-country courses. “That, and how long it takes to get someone out [of an Exo in an emergency].”

But Woof Wear told H&H that although sales have been disappointing, people have credited the Exo BodyCage with saving their lives.

The most recent of these was Katie Hamer, who was airlifted to hospital after a rotational fall during the novice class at Spring Hill Horse Trials, Gloucestershire, on 25 August. Three weeks later, with only bruises and a broken wrist, she told H&H she was lucky to be alive.

“The horse I was riding went head-over-heels over the first jump,” said Katie, 41. “Doctors have told me that, if I wasn’t wearing the Exo BodyCage, I wouldn’t be alive today.”

In 2005, event rider Lisa Bray said she would “never ride cross-country without an Exo again” after walking away from a rotational fall at Milton Keynes Equestrian Centre.

But on 17 September, the BodyCage company will cease to exist. Exasperated by what they term as “antagonism” towards the product, Mr Kirk and Mr Asprey are donating the patent to the RDA.

The Kan Teq body protector is the first moulded equestrian body protector made exclusively for women.

Designed in conjunction with sportswear expert Knox — maker of top-of-the-range motorcycle protectors — Kan Teq has produced a unique, strong and light moulded foam panel protection system.

According to the manufacturer, it offers comfort, flexibility, safety and style. It hugs the waist, chest, back and bust and curves into the small of the back. The shoulder pad is designed to protect a particularly vulnerable area.

As well as the many colours available, the Kan Teq protector features reflective logos and piping to aid visibility. There are six adjustment points for optimal fit and the fabric is Tencel-coated for stain resistance, stretch — so the protector moves with the body — and waterproofing.

On impact, the tiny air pockets in the outer skin of the foam panels help absorb the force of the fall. The protector conforms with all the requirements of BETA 2000, Body Protector Class 3 and meets standard EN13158:2000.

Who uses it?

International eventer Polly Jackson has been trialling the Kan Teq in her “off season” and she plans to compete in it in the spring.

“It’s a bit more modern in shape and material — a bit like the sort of thing trail bikers wear,” says Polly, who chose a metallic-coloured version. “I have tried some back protectors in the past which have made me feel like a robot, but this one is definitely less clumpy.

“I suppose it’s like wearing a Burberry jacket rather than one from the high street — it’s stylish with a bit more technicality about it.”

Young eventer Izzy Taylor adds: “This is the first body protector I have worn which I can really breathe in.”

Eventers will have to declare on arrival at horse trials if they are competing in a BodyCage Exo-Skeleton body protector, the British Eventing (BE) sport committee decided at its meeting last month.

The protectors, which incorporate a magnesium allow cage around the trunk, are opened at the shoulder using an Allen key. They come with a key in a side flap, but BE will also provide keys to all technical advisers.

“This is specialist kit,” said BE director of sport Mike Etherington-Smith. “Site teams need to know if people are wearing them because if they fall there’s a special way of unfastening them.”

Body protectors are designed to offer protection against impacts suffered when falling from a horse and although injuries cannot be entirely prevented by wearing a well-fitting BETA-approved garment, it should reduce the severity of an injury.

A rider may fall onto soft or hard ground or hard objects such as trees, vehicles and rails, as well as being at risk of being kicked or trodden, so the latest body protectors have been developed with these injuries in mind.

While current body protectors do not provide protection against severe crushing of the body, there has been some research and development in this area. A prototype “body cage” (pictured) — a protector designed to prevent crush injuries by withstanding the weight of a falling horse — was unveiled at Burghley last year.

According to Body Cage designer Matthew Aspray, a licencing deal has been signed with a major equestrian company and a new body protector, incorporating the body cage, is currently being prepared for manufacturer and is expected to hit the shelves later this year.

Competition rules

Currently British Eventing requires all riders to wear BETA-approved body protection for cross-country but leaves the individual to decide whether or not to wear one during the other two phases of the sport.

Body protectors are optional for British Show Jumping Association and British Dressage competitions, while riders competing in British Riding Club competitions must wear them for hunter trials and the cross-country phase of horse trials. BRC also recommends they are worn for show jumping but this is not compulsory.

Wendy Peckham of the BHS says: “We encourage all riders to wear body protection when they are mounted. Riding is a high-risk sport and while we can never eliminate all the risk, it is sensible to do the best we can to protect ourselves. Body protectors are much less cumbersome than they used to be and the injuries associated with a fall may be reduce to just bruising by wearing well-fitting protection.”

BETA has the following guidelines for riders looking to purchase a body protector.

1. Ensure that you try the correct size of body protector and that it is adjusted to give a close fit to the torso

2. A visit to a properly trained retailer is recommended, such as one with the BETA safety course certificate

3. Manufacturers offer a special size service or even made-to-measure body protectors. If one cannot be found that fits comfortably, it is possible to order one that will fit and is comfortable

Fitting facts

• The body protector should be tried on over light clothing. Check that it is comfortable to wear in all simulated riding positions.
• It should fit securely and reasonably tightly to avoid movement during activity and to ensure that it is in place in the event of an accident
• Adjust the body protector to a snug fit. Check that no red Velcro is exposed at the shoulder or waist closures. If it is visible, the protector is too small or is incorrectly fastened
• Women may find that a larger size of front panel than back panel gives a more comfortable fit. Panels from adjacent sizes are compatible
• In garments where a shoulder protector is separate, you may find that the garment can be adjusted at the shoulder

A prototype body protector on show at Burghley and Blenheim could reduce life-threatening crush injuries sustained when horses fall on to their riders, according to inventors Alasdair Kirk and Matthew Aspray.

The BodyCage is a rigid “skeleton” that will be enclosed in a traditional foam body protector. The design has been inspired by technology used to protect rally drivers in a crash. The cage is hinged to allow entry and exit and it is also said to be easily adjustable to fit a wide range of sizes.

The inventors are currently in discussion with a protective equipment manufacturer about producing the finished garment and it is believed that the retail price will be around £200.

British Eventing is watching the developments with interest, since it is in sports such as eventing and racing that crushing injuries are most likely to occur.

Chief executive Peter Durrant looks forward to seeing it tested by riders. “I am full of admiration for the designers. We’re totally supportive of any new initiative like this because we are a safety conscious sport,” he says.

British Equestrian Trade Association chief executive Claire Williams comments: “Other manufacturers have looked at the use of solid panels in body protectors, but there is always the risk that these can cause additional damage to the rider. However, for the performance rider, crushing is a real danger and anything that can give additional protection has to be worthwhile.”

Riding injuries expert Dr Michael Whitlock agrees: “In principle it is a very good idea, although it is early days yet. It will be interesting to see the finished garment.”
