Three horses found dead: poisoning suspected

Police and vets are investigating after three horses were found dead in a field.

The horses from Blue Acre Horse Rescue on Ham Island, Old Windsor, were found on 23 August by the centre’s co-founder Bob Regan.

“When I arrived on Monday morning one was lying on the track dead and two others were lying dead nearby,” he told H&H.

“It was a bit of a shock.

“There is nothing wrong with the others.”

The rescue centre, which was founded in 2002, currently has 35 horses on site at its 40-acre farm.

Mr Regan added he called the vets – Chiltern Equine – who came and collected the bodies and took them for testing.

Mr Regan said that an initial autopsy proved inconclusive and samples have been sent off for further analysis.

“We can’t work out what it was – there weren’t any signs,” he added.

Two of the horses, Nelson (pictured, above) and Spirit – both aged between eight and 10 years old –belonged to his Mr Regan’s stepdaughter Rebecca, who he said is “heartbroken”.

The other, a pony called Freddie, belonged to the other co-founder of the rescue centre Caron North.

“He was a great little pony with kids,” she said.

“Three horses don’t just drop dead overnight.”

Thames Valley Police have said that poisoning is suspected.

“They had no obvious injuries and were fine the day before, but had blood around their eyes and rectums,” said a spokesman.

“They appear to have just dropped in a cluster, where they stood.

“Other horses in the field have eaten the same food and drunk from the same water containers, but appear unaffected.”

A police spokeswoman told H&H on Thursday (27 August) that the investigation is ongoing.

Four horses rescued from Berkshire stables blaze

Four trapped horses were rescued from a stable fire in Berkshire on Monday night (21 June)

Firefighters from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service and a pump from Hampshire attended the incident at Paices Hill, Aldermaston, at just after 11pm.

One horse suffered burns to its quarters but is expected to recover well.

Martin Vile of the fire service, said: “All of our operational crews have now received animal rescue training and six RBFRS officers have been trained in advanced techniques, including animal handling skills.

“An animal rescue officer is sent to every incident involving large animals and we carry a range of equipment including head collars and lead ropes, which were used at this incident to lead the horses to safety. “

He said the service was about to buy more large animal rescue kit, including a quick-release lifting bar, harnesses, strops and a mud lance, to make animal rescues not only more effective but safer for crews.

Retired team-chaser mare attacked with blunt instrument

The owner of a twenty-year-old team chaser says he’s sick to his stomach after she was attacked and left bleeding from her rear end.

Owner Mark Smith of Whitfields livery yard, Twyford, Berkshire, said the broodmare had been found at 10am on Friday July 11 with blood seeping from her vulva.

He said: “It turns my stomach to relate this incident. The vet said, in his opinion, the internal injuries were consistent with blows from a blunt instrument. He said he could think of no logical way they could have been caused by an accident.”

Vet James Crawford, from Straight Mile Equine Practise, Wokingham, Berkshire said: “There was a lot of bruising and a wound about an inch inside the vagina. I’ve never seen anything like this before. We checked the field and could see nothing that could have caused it.”

The incident was reported to the police and the RSPCA, and forensic crime officers visited the site to collect evidence. The horse, which was one of the original horses in the Bollocks to Blair Team Chase team, should make a complete recovery.

Suzanne Walton won both elementary classes at Berkshire (9-10 November), reports Helen Triggs with her eight-year-old Dutch-bred Science Fiction, who she bought from Holland two years ago after being sidelined for nearly three months with a broken back.

Alice Oppenheimer and Headmore Delegate were double winners in the novice section, while Theo Maxfield travelled from Bicester to win the pick-your-own test riding at prix st georges.

New Moors

Caesar proved his supremacy at New Moors, Durham, on 10 November with a win in the medium 63 for Samantha Brown, reports Andrea Oakes. Caroline Jackson and Keverstone Squirrel Hill won the elementary 44 restricted.

Berkshire Riding Centre

Kay Maxted on Privaldi and Markus Bauer and Global Ludewig tied for first place in the advanced medium at Berkshire Riding Centre, reports Helen Triggs.

Alice Oppenheimer enjoyed a double win in the mediums on Scarlett Wurlitzer, while another double winner was Carol Wagstaff, with Tjalling.

Prix st georges winner Sarah-Jane Elmslie scored 65% at intermediaire II with Masterplan in the pick-your-own class. Runner-up to Masterplan was Ugland Lusitanos’ Oeste, ridden by Paulo Santos.

Manor Farm

Lindsay Hudson took the advanced medium qualifier and prix st georges on Berineas at Manor Farm, Cambridgeshire, reports Ruth Pearce.

Natalie Bushell and Eze-Duz-It finished runners-up in the advanced medium

qualifier and then went on to lead the music. Harry Payne won the elementary freestyle on Georgie Brett’s Champion Park with 74.6%, and also finished a close runner-up on Ballebo.

The highest score of the day went to double novice winner Lauren Dance and Roli, with 81.6% in the music. Jo Swain and Lord Of The Rings led the medium freestyle.

Tall Trees

Claire Deithrick and Donnerbelle scored a hat-trick at Tall Trees Equestrian Centre, Cornwall, reports Annabel Kendal. Claire dominated the novice and elementary freestyle to music classes and finished second in the medium section behind Debra Fews on Dile Que No.

Claire also finished second behind Kerry Lynch and Quick in the prix st georges freestyle with Alando.

Maria Cooper, who works full-time in hospitality training, won both restricted medium classes on her own Alisja, with more than 68%.

The College EC

Spillers Response Combined Training qualifiers attracted a strong field to The College, Bedfordshire, with Claire Foley and Renkum Raphael coming out on top in the prelim qualifier, reports Ruth Pearce. Louise Bradley and her new horse, Meadows Whisper, took the novice qualifier on their second outing together. Valerie Plant’s Boxter Bravo led the elementary qualifier with Nick Turner.

Kingswood EC

Sam Fish was the one to beat at Kingswood, reports Jo Prestwich. Her first two wins came with Gunstone If Only at medium level, sharing the qualifier with Bev White and her home-bred Five To Five. Sam then won the advanced medium and advanced 100 on the coloured stallion Gunstone Iwondo D. Sonia Webster rode the Justesens’ Cranswick Monte Carlo to win the prix st georges.

Myerscough Arena

Sarah Turner and her striking dun Fiddlesticks ended 2006 in fine style with a good win in the advanced medium at Myerscough Arena, reports Jo Prestwich. Jessica Dunn and Dunn To A T won a strong medium qualifier. Darcas Lever took the elementary qualifier with Northlands Real Performance.

Oldencraig

Michelle Williams rode Laurentia to a 70%-plus victory in the open novice qualifier at Oldencraig, reports Celia Cadwallader. Dane Rawlins’ 13-year-old daughter, Anne-Marie, carried off both restricted elementaries on Sheer Gold, while her father won the advanced medium with Sydney and was second in both the advanced medium and the medium qualifier with Falkana. Lorna Blair and Hello Dolly won the medium qualifier. Edward Creamer took both medium restricted classes on eight-year-old Korenbloem Santiago, while Waky Nao, and Coral Ingham won the prix st georges and intermediaire I.

Summerhouse

Nick Gauntlett took both novice classes with the stallion Chilli Morning on a last-minute outing to Summerhouse in Gloucestershire, reports Andrea Oakes. Nick also secured second and a third places with Bubbling Brook. Donni Doo and Olivia Ayrton dominated the restricted novice 33 qualifier, while Rossgold Rubina and Lucy Farrer sustained a run of good results with a double win in the advanced mediums.

Berkshire Paras

Erin Orford, Anna Gill and Kate MacGregor each won two classes apiece at Berkshire College, reports Helen Triggs. Erin won team test 25 with 71.43% riding the Paralympic Dressage Trust’s Painted Affair and was joint first with Lauren Rathbone and Haeren Sweet Charity in test 21. London-based lawyer Kate MacGregor rode Di Redfearn’s pony, Tribal Indian, to win tests 41 and 52, while Grade III rider Anna Gill, won tests 35 and 31 with Seasong. Sophie Christiensen and Martini Maybe were top scorers of the day with 74.71% in test 1A.

Musical moments at Berkshire RC

Henrietta Lacey and Curaco dominated the top-level classes at Berkshire Riding Centre with scores of more than 71% in the prix st georges freestyle qualifier and advanced mixed test.

Michelle Van Meurs was another dual winner with her expressive Spanish stallion, Isleno XXXIX, who won the novice freestyle and novice qualifier.

Matt Hicks dominated the advanced medium, taking the first three places, with winner Cas.Com, beating Offello by one point, followed by High Mark.

The day’s highest scorer was Jane Hudson on Erlkoenig’s Malachite, with more than 73% in the elementary freestyle, riding to Vanessa Mae music.
