Australia’s Lyndal Oatley has reported her “unicorn” Eros has been checked by the vet and “looks to be fine” after the pair’s Blue Hors FEI World Dressage Championships elimination in the grand prix special.

The pair were nearing the end of their test today (Tuesday, 8 August), when the bell rang in their final extended trot. A post from Equestrian Australia said the pair were eliminated owing to Eros “showing some irregular movement”.

Lyndal said after her World Dressage Championships elimination that the “most important thing” is that Eros is ok.

“I don’t think anyone ever goes in there expecting to have that feeling and this is the first time ever for me so it’s very surreal, and a bit of an odd feeling,” she said.

“At the end of the day the horses always come first and ‘Ross’ is my little dream pony. I literally left everything and ran with him down to the stables. Thankfully, he looks to be fine. The vet has gone straight over him. We’re very lucky, we have a great team vet, Robin [Bell]. We checked everything, [his] trot-up was fine. So it appears that there’s just a bit of tension in his body, and that’s a lot of atmosphere for some horses.

“For him, this is still early days and I think he put his heart and soul into yesterday, and today the tension was a bit too much [resulting in] the irregular rhythm, and that’s what happened.”

She added he felt “a little more introverted than normal” in the arena.

“But then you never know [whether] what you’re feeling, and what it looks like, could be two totally different things,” she said.

“The judge did the right thing for sure and the horse’s welfare must come first.”

Lyndal and the 13-year-old Sir Oldenburg gelding, owned by Carol and Andrew Oatley, scored 72.19% in yesterday’s grand prix to help the Australian team to eighth place.

Lyndal Oatley was visibly emotional when she finished her grand prix test on a personal best championship score with her “unicorn” Eros, at the Blue Hors FEI World Dressage Championships.

Lyndal only decided days before the championship that she would take the 13-year-old grey gelding over her equally talented mare, Elvive. The decision paid off with “Ross” producing some beautiful work, and the pair scoring a marvellous 72.19% for Australia.

As the crowd erupted at the end of their test and Lyndal and Ross made their way out of the arena, Lyndal could be seen wiping happy tears from her eyes.

“I just wanted to do solid and really give our team the best chance we could. I wasn’t thinking of a score,” she said.

“It’s funny because I’ve had a lot of experience with him when he was insecure with noise. Here in Herning for the World Cup, he got really frightened at the clapping and ran off. So for him to actually cope with that [today] I was emotional and proud of him for doing that. Because we do this for the passion of the horse. It’s not just the six minutes in there; it’s our whole journey.

“No one sees how much we work we do with them to get them confident and to feel confident that they can show themselves [off], and that’s the fun thing with him. He went in there, showed off, came out proud as punch, coped with the clapping and wooing and I was already happy. It wouldn’t matter what score I got then, I was just thrilled that he developed and trusted me enough to come out of the arena feeling confident.”

Lyndal, who is based in Germany with her husband Patrik Kittel, admitted choosing Eros over Elvive came with “a lot of guilt”.

“It was really hard,” she said. “They’re like your children and you spend your whole life with them. I’ve had Elvive since she was seven and I know her inside out and I know what she’s capable of. But I also know at this moment when championships count we need stability and experience and at this moment Ross had that after Aachen,” she said.

“When he returned and developed his training for me, I was like, ‘This is the right moment for him’. And so I tossed and turned and I drove everybody nuts in our federation, and thankfully they were really supportive of it and let me bounce off my ideas on where we’re at so we could have the best team we could have.”

Lyndal bought Ross from a stable in Holland, where he was based to be sold. Prior to turning his hooves to dressage, he started off as an eventer – and had a stint as a para horse for a partially blind rider.

“I bought him when he was 10, after I was pregnant with my daughter. I wanted to find a horse that I could develop and come back into the sport but I hadn’t any intentions of championships at that point,” she explained.

“All I wanted to do was really get into the sport and find a horse that I really connected with to develop and have fun along the way. So this [the World Championships] was never a part of it, but it’s a great bonus.”

Lyndal describes Ross as a “unicorn” who loves people.

“He’s adorable; he loves attention. He loves to feel confident and he loves to be with you,” she said.

“He’s a really fun horse to ride because he’s so passionate and loves the partnership. That’s a really fun thing with him because if you offer everything you have, he’ll give you everything he can in return, even if it’s overwhelming for him at that point.”

THE banning of jumps racing in South Australia is a “salutary reminder” to the equestrian industry of the potential impact of failing to act.

The state has become the second to outlaw the sport, following New South Wales, and Victoria 9including Melbourne, pictured) is now the only Australian state in which jump racing is allowed.

Although Racing South Australia had not programmed any jumps racing since last October, citing economic rather than welfare-related reasons, the state’s animal welfare legislation has been amended to prohibit any further events.

A spokesman for South Australian deputy premier Susan Close said: “While jumps races were once an intrinsic part of the racing industry, it has fallen out of favour with the public who find the number of falls and deaths unacceptable.”

Ms Close added: “The community and the racing industry gave up on jumps racing some time ago and the parliament is reflecting this change in attitudes.

“Banning the sport through legislation gives certainty to the racing industry.

“It will enable the rest of the industry to be clearly distinguished from the accidents associated with jumps in the public mind.”

Flat racing is unaffected, and the change does not prohibit South Australians training jumps horses to race in other states. Nor does it affect showjumping or other equestrian disciplines.

But World Horse Welfare CEO Roly Owers told H&H: “The demise of jump racing in South Australia is a salutary reminder to everyone in the equestrian world – not just racing – of what our future might look like if we do not act now.

“Unless we place the welfare of our horses at the heart of everything that we do, and be seen to be doing so, it will be impossible to maintain public support, which makes government intervention all the more likely. We have to constantly challenge ourselves to keep an open mind to ensure we really are doing right by our horses – and to make a step change in how we engage with critics and the general public – to truly safeguard the future of our sports.”

H&H reported last month that in a survey commissioned by World Horse Welfare, that 20% of respondents did not support the involvement of horses in sport under any circumstances.

Key to maintaining social licence, or public acceptance of horse sport, is celebrating the horse-human partnership, and ensuring the public knows that horse welfare is always the top priority.

British Horseracing Authority CEO Julie Harrington told H&H that, as with all industries, “racing must, at the same time, demonstrate confidence in its high standards, while listening to its current and future customers”.

“Racing brings a quality of life to horses that is truly exceptional, and our sport and its participants are focused on the safety and welfare of our horses,” she said. “We are not just a major sport but also a major industry, which has a huge economic impact and generates employment for more than 80,000 people.

“We have a cross-industry welfare strategy in place based around the premise of all racehorses leading ‘A life well lived’, the recommendations of which are being delivered on a systematic basis and include the recent whip report and numerous innovations to further enhance safety on course.

“We are rightly proud of all of this and as a sport are working to do more to explain it, through initiatives such as National Racehorse Week.

“However, we must also understand that, in a society where views on animal rights and welfare are rapidly evolving, we do not have a divine right to expect unconditional support from the public or even the Government.

“We must ensure that we continue to listen to concerns and either seek to learn from them and evolve, or do more to explain and reassure. This is important for the long-term health, prosperity and popularity of the sport.”

A Racing SA spokesman told H&H: “Racing SA notes parliament’s passing of this bill, and reiterates that the decision we took in October 2021 to no longer schedule jumps racing in South Australia was based on the economic viability of the industry and not on welfare.

“While that decision was final and irreversible, we trust this closes the book on any debate around the future of jumps racing. We look forward to continuing to work with the state government on growing the thoroughbred racing industry across South Australia.”

Australia will send a team to the para dressage World Championships next month following a U-turn by Equestrian Australia (EA).

On Monday (11 July) it was announced by EA that a para dressage team would not be sent to the championships in Herning, Denmark (6-14 August). EA said this was based on selection policies and the national selection panel being “directed” by EA high performance that its programme is “committed to fund only genuine medal contention combinations” to attend. The announcement came the same day EA confirmed the team that would travel to Herning for the dressage World Championships, as well as teams for showjumping, vaulting and driving.

“Following careful review in relation to the medal target scores outlined in the selection policy and consideration of the scores gained by qualified Australian combinations, including where the scores were obtained geographically, the decision was made not to select horse and athlete combinations to attend this year’s championships in Herning,” read the statement.

“Para equestrian is an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) funded discipline, and as such prioritises medal delivery at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Subsequently, the EA High Performance Program will be conducting an off-horse programme at the 2022 World Championships to further strengthen Australia’s chance of Paralympic success in Paris.”

The statement added that as part of an education programme, identified athletes would travel to Herning and partake in a “schedule of activities” designed to develop future Paralympic medal-winning performances, across all para grades. It would also provide those who had not competed in a championship environment the opportunity to experience the “demands and intensity of a Games campaign”.

“The EA High Performance Para-equestrian Program remains committed to achieving high-performance outcomes, including delivering Paralympic medals in Paris for Australian riders, and believe this plan best compliments these objectives,” the statement continued.

The decision was met with widespread backlash across the global equestrian community. Hundreds of individuals voiced disappointment on social media and a petition calling for the decision to be reversed was signed by more than 11,000 people in two days.

Today (13 July) during a panel discussion hosted by Australian magazine Equestrian Life, EA chair Mark Bradley confirmed the decision had been overturned and that Emma Booth, Dianne Barnes and Lisa Martin had been selected to represent Australia at the para dressage World Championships.

Mark said it had been clear from the “outpouring” how strong feelings were on the matter. He praised the Chris Webb-led high performance team and the selectors for their “good intentions” – but said it was apparent the decision not to send a team was very contentious and for some on the EA board, it did not sit well. The EA board therefore met and asked the selection panel and Chris to overturn the decision.

Dani Fraillon, chair of EA’s high performance para equestrian panel, said there had been some “tears” from the selected riders following the good news, and added that dedication would be given to ensuring para equestrian in Australia is not only high-performance, but a sport “everybody with a disability can do”, if they choose.

Mark confirmed the riders will receive funding towards the para dressage World Championships based on the fact they had qualified and “earned the right” to represent Australia, and as a result there is a “funding commitment to getting them there”. But he also highlighted the fact funding comes from the Australian Sports Commission and that perspective would have to be kept on the fact a “large chunk” of para grant funds will go towards the Herning campaign, and this could mean less funding available towards Paris 2024.

“We need to ensure that we still have the resources available, we still have the support of the owners, and we might need to find some money from somewhere other than the federal government to support our programme into Paris,” he said.

Australian showjumper Jamie Kermond has been banned for two years for the use of cocaine, which cost him his place at the Tokyo Games.

In July 2021 Jamie, 36, was provisionally suspended after he returned a positive A-sample for a metabolite of cocaine, following a test conducted by Sport Integrity Australia on 26 June.

Jamie had been due to represent Australia on Yandoo Oaks Constellation in Tokyo, alongside team-mates Edwina Tops-Alexander and Katie Laurie. The team did not have a travelling reserve after Rowan Willis had previously pulled out, and so Jamie’s suspension put the team’s place in jeopardy. But in the end Edwina and Katie were granted permission from the International Olympic Committee to compete as individuals.

Today (3 March) Sport Integrity Australia said Jamie had been banned for the presence of benzoylecgonine (a metabolite of cocaine) and for the use of cocaine.

“Although the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code introduced more lenient sanctions for some illicit drug use outside of competition, in Mr Kermond’s matter it was determined that he used cocaine during the in-competition period, on and/or between 24 June 2021 and 26 June 2021,” read the statement.

“In equestrian sport the in-competition period starts from when an athlete checks in their horse the day before the competition through to the end of the last competition at the event for that athlete. As such, Equestrian Australia imposed a two-year ban on Mr Kermond commencing on 26 June 2021.”

Jamie cannot participate in any sports that have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code until 26 June 2023. He is suspended on the FEI database.

Sport Integrity Australia chief executive David Sharpe said the case was a “stark reminder” to all athletes about the risk of illicit drugs.

“Illegal drugs have no place in an athlete’s life – their use leaves athletes vulnerable to anti-doping violations, health risks, criminal charges and exposes them to the threat of blackmail which increases their risk of being approached for match-fixing,” Mr Sharpe said.

“There is simply no room for these drugs in sport.”

At the time of the positive result last summer, Jame had said the result was “likely” from a “single recreational use” of the drug during a social event, and had no connections with the sport.

“I am extremely upset and remorseful as to what has happened and I accept full responsibility,” he said.

“I am truly sorry as I have let a lot of people down including my family and team-mates. Hopefully one day I can be forgiven for my mistake and make amends through better actions and continued contribution to the sport I know and love.”

Equestrian Australia (EA) has announced a new guide stating that the maximum load a horse is expected to carry should not exceed 20% of the horse’s weight.

EA said the guide, introduced as a horse welfare move, has been adopted by dressage and eventing, and other disciplines are considering following suit.

It means that the rider and equipment together should not weigh more than a fifth of the horse’s approximate weight.

EA said the purpose of introducing this guide — not a rule — is to “reinforce EA’s commitment to best practice striving for optimal health, safety and welfare of the athlete-horse combination”.

The federation said: “The weight combination of both horse and athlete can impact on the overall healthy and safe movement, biomechanics, positioning and balance of this combination on varying surfaces. These factors are all key elements in maintaining optimal welfare management for this combination.”

An online calculator can help assess how much a horse or pony should carry

The aim of the guide is also to “provide education and clarity and highlight awareness of Equestrian Australia’s expectations to athletes, coaches, owners, parents, judges, officials and the public on the aspect of a horse’s welfare and capacity to carry weight,” EA said.

“This guide will provide athletes, owners and parents with a reasonably accurate measurement of the maximum burden for a horse to carry. This guide will support coaches in conversations with their athletes about carrying capacity considerations, as they currently do, about choice of mount and all animal welfare aspects of horsemanship.

“This guide tailors the capacity of the horse across the entire height range to a standard accepted internationally, and ensures appropriate mounts for humans of every age and size.”

EA said international animal welfare guides “include advocacy for horse welfare on this issue”, and that the guide will “give our equestrian community a reasonably accurate measurement of the maximum burden for a horse to carry”.

Nothing will change in the assessment of a horse and its athletic performance by any judge and no one will be prevented from riding. EA added that weighing riders with their tack is common practice in endurance competitions but “this will NOT take place at any competition beyond endurance at this time”.

EA also pointed out that the maximum a horse should carry may be less for young horses, those recovering from injury or surgery or returning to work after a long break or pregnant mares, or adult riders schooling young ponies or horses.

Victoria Davies’ buckskin stallion Celere caught the eye with his striking good looks and chilled personality on his Paralympic debut at the Tokyo Games.

The Australian combination were the second pair into the arena on the opening day of dressage in the Equestrian Park at Baji Koen, scoring 65.62% to finish ninth in the grade II individual contest.

Tokyo was the first Games for both horse and rider – the pair had been targeting Rio 2016, but Victoria’s health put their Paralympic debut on hold for a further five years.

“We were getting ready for Rio when I was diagnosed with a neurological and spinal condition, which put an end to [our aim] as I had to focus on that,” said Victoria, who faced the heart-breaking decision to withdraw from her selection campaign and undergo high-risk surgery to stabilise her spine.

Victoria found the now 14-year-old Lusitano (Estoiro x Zaquiro) on a trip to Portugal in 2014 and was initially sceptical about whether he was the right horse for her, admitting she “had to be convinced” by her husband.

“But everyone assured me that he had the walk, he had the trot and he had the temperament, which is so important in para – you need that trustworthy mount. So we brought him back to Australia. He’s very special.”

Celere combines competing with stud duties and has a “full line-up” of dates in the diary on his return home from the Games, as well as numerous foals on the ground in both Portugal and Australia.

“He’s usually very chilled, he’s such a dude and he loves junk food – Polo mints, liquorice, sugar, Australia-shaped savoury biscuits, those are his favourites,” she said.

“He’s a fun horse. I’ve had FEI stewards say that he is the quietest horse they’ve ever had – you wouldn’t think he is a stallion.”

While Victoria felt they had more to give than they produced in the Tokyo arena, she was full of praise for Celere and is looking forward to the future.

“It wasn’t our best performance by any means, but you know it’s the horse’s first Games as well [as mine] and I think the atmosphere just closed in on him,” she said. “I just couldn’t get him going forward like what we’ve been producing. But he kept me safe, he’s a good boy and he tried.”

She added: “I’m really happy with how I got ready, mentally and physically. Horses are horses and you can never really tell how they’re going to be. He felt brilliant in the warm-up, he was so relaxed, but as soon as we went out there, he just froze a bit. He got a little bit stage-struck, but next time, we will be better.”

Australia’s Sharon Jarvis entered the arena for the final ride of her record-breaking Paralympic career at the Tokyo Games tonight (Sunday, 29 August).

Sharon made history this week, as only the Australian equestrian to have ridden at three Paralympics – Beijing 2008, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. It was on this note that she made the decision to retire from the sport.

“The part that makes it a lot harder is that I made a choice before Tokyo that this would be my last Games,” said Sharon, who partnered Romanos to a score of 67.9% on the final day of the team competition.

The moment was even more emotional as this was Sharon’s final ride on Donnella Merrett’s 19-year-old gelding, as he returns home to his owners after the Games.

“It just makes me so emotional because I have absolutely loved riding this horse to bits, but unfortunately that is the nature of our sport when we can’t afford to own our own horses,” she said.

How a social media call-out led to a special partnership

When Sharon’s intended Tokyo ride was injured, she thought that was the end of her dream for these Games.

“I had moved 4,000km across the country to train for Tokyo five years ago. So when my horse injured himself I said to my coach Rozzie Ryan, ‘I think that’s it. I have to drive back home, I don’t have a budget to buy a horse’,” she recalls.

“Rozzie said, ‘no, you’re not giving up yet. I won’t let you drive out that gate!’ We actually put a call out on Facebook to see if anybody had a horse to loan to me, and we had so many lovely messages from people.”

One of those messages was from Donnella, based around 1,000km away, who suggested her Rotspon x Laptop gelding Romanos might suit.

“Rozzie said, ‘that’s the horse – go get on the plane’. I had one ride and said ‘yeah I think I can do this’. I’m just ever so grateful to his owner for allowing me to ride him and my coach for not letting me give up.”

Tokyo was a completely new experience for Romanos, who Sharon describes as “very cheeky and loves drinking slushies”.

“I’m just very lucky and grateful to be on a horse like him here,” she said.

The grade IV rider was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma bone tumour in her left leg when she was seven years old and was originally given three months to live. Doctors saved her life and saved her leg from amputation. As a result of the treatment, her left leg and lower right leg have limited movement and strength.

“I’ve seen my family for two days in the last 20 months because of Covid. They are back home watching. It’s been quite a big logistical thing, and I’m looking forward to going home after Tokyo,” she said, crediting her support team, and first and foremost Romanos, for what they have helped her to achieve.

“It’s incredible and it’s emotional [to be here]. I thought I was really lucky to get to one Games and to make it to three is just unbelievable.”

Alongside her Paralympic achievements, Sharon is also a double bronze world medallist with Applewood Odorado.

“We found him through Horse & Hound!” she said. “We had been in England in the lead up to World Championships in 2007. I picked up a copy of Horse & Hound magazine and saw an ad in there for a horse. We went and looked at it and ended up buying him, and he went on the be my medal-winning horse at the World Equestrian Games at Kentucky in 2010.”

The Australian International 3-Day Event (Aus3DE) has been cancelled for a second year owing to Covid lockdowns and the impact other cancelled events have had on riders’ qualifications.

The fixture is the sole CCI5* in the southern hemisphere and last ran in 2019, when Hazel Shannon and Willingapark Clifford claimed their third five-star victory at the Adelaide fixture.

This year’s event was due to take place from 18-21 November, but the plug was pulled as a result of further lockdown measures in Australia.

The Australian International 3-Day Event board announced the news today (6 August).

The notice said the decision was made “after considering all options and follows the impact Covid-19 lockdowns have had on other equestrian events across Australia”.

Board chairman Greg Rolton added that lockdowns in other Australian states have led to equestrian events being cancelled and riders unable to qualify for the Adelaide event in November.

“Our primary focus is to deliver a safe and successful event at the world-class benchmark we have created. Unfortunately, with continued lockdowns across the country in 2021, this has impacted the ability for riders to compete and qualify for the Aus3DE,” he said.

“We are disappointed this has led to the decision to cancel the 2021 [event] particularly after the success of our Olympic silver medal-winning equestrian eventing team at the Tokyo Olympics, but we have our sights set on the delivery of a fantastic event in 2022 post this pandemic.”

Three CCI5*s are still to come in the 2021 calendar. These are new fixtures at Bicton in Britain (1-5 September) and Maryland in the US (13-17 October), plus the established Pau CCI5* in France (27-31 October).

Olympic debutants Kevin McNab and Don Quidam have been on a rollercoaster journey to the Tokyo Games as the pair went from non-travelling reserve – to sitting in provisional team silver after the cross-country (pictured).

Various changes have taken place to the Australian Olympic squad along the way; original team member Chris Burton and Quality Purdey withdrew owing to horse injury and were replaced by Stuart Tinney and Leporis, while Kevin moved into travelling alternate. Then following the first horse inspection on Thursday (29 July), Leporis was withdrawn based on veterinary advice – meaning Kevin and Don Quidam, whom is owned by Kevin’s wife Emma and Scuederia 1918, received the call-up.

While Surrey-based Kevin began 2020 with four horses qualified for the Olympics it was 13-year-old gelding Don Quidam by Quidam who made the cut. The pair were sixth at the Kentucky Three-Day Event in April this year, and completed Pau in October 2020.

Suffolk-based Kevin was disappointed with a dressage score of 32.10, but the pair made up for it as they jumped clear across country – picking up 2.8 time penalties.

“He gave me a great ride,” said Kevin. “The course was fantastic, it flowed a lot better than I thought it would and the ground held up super.”

Kevin, who joined Andrew Hoy and Vassily De Lassos and Shane Rose and Virgil, said there were no specific team orders ahead of the cross-country. Shane and Andrew both rode clear rounds inside the time.

“I think each rider has just done what’s right for their horse. I did a couple of different routes to the other guys and everyone was happy with that. We all know our own horses best and we’re allowed to choose what we wanted to do,” said Kevin.

“At the second water I went straight in long out, that just suited my horse better and I thought it would put a bit of money in the bank for later on in the course. It did make me a little slow though. Obviously it would have been great to come under time but it was clear first, and time second and I wanted to make sure I was clear. I didn’t have a clear round in the dressage, I needed to get one here!”

Australia finishes the day on 96.20 in provisional silver. Team GBR remains in provisional gold on 78.3.

The Australian showjumping team’s Tokyo plans have been thrown into disarray after one of its members tested positive for a metabolite of cocaine.

In a statement today (21 July) Equestrian Australia (EA) said it had provisionally suspended Jamie Kermond under the Australian national anti-doping policy. Jamie had been due to make his Olympic debut with Oaks Constellation, alongside Edwina Tops-Alexander on Identity Vitseroel and Katie Laurie Casebrook Lomond.

“The mandatory provisional suspension notice asserts Mr Kermond returned a positive A-sample for a metabolite of cocaine following a test conducted by Sport Integrity Australia on 26 June 2021. Cocaine is prohibited in competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Australian national anti-doping policy 2021,” read the statement.

“Mr Kermond is prohibited from participating in any WADA compliant event, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, while the provisional suspension is in place.”

Under the anti-doping policy, Jamie has the opportunity to have his B-sample analysed.

In a statement Jamie said he was informed of the positive result and “it is likely” the positive result was from a “single recreational use” of the drug during a social event, and had no connections with the sport.

“I am extremely upset and remorseful as to what has happened and I accept full responsibility,” he added. “I am truly sorry as I have let a lot of people down including my family and team-mates.

“Hopefully one day I can be forgiven for my mistake and make amends through better actions and continued contribution to the sport I know and love.”

The spokesman for EA said the organisation has spoken to Jamie and “support services will be offered to him”.

The Australian Olympic showjumping team’s position is currently unclear. Reserve rider Rowan Willis withdrew from his position on 9 July, stating that he had “weighed up the options very carefully” and considered it in the best interest of his ride, Blue Movie, not to undertake such a demanding global travel schedule when Equestrian Australia “had made it clear there was no tactical plan” for the pair to start.

Rowan appears on the FEI Tokyo definite entries list, which was last updated today, as does Jamie. H&H has approached EA for comment.

In a statement today Edwina Tops-Alexander said it was a “sad day for all of us”.

“I never imagined our team (or what’s left of it) would ever be in this situation. At the moment I’m not sure what the overall outcome is but it’s definitely a rollercoaster I won’t forget,” she said.

“We stay strong we keep going and listen to ourselves. People in life need to be responsible for their own actions and they know what they are. Hopefully I’ll be able to go to Tokyo next week as an individual. I’ll keep you all posted.”

Update: On 22 July, EA said the organisation is working with the FEI to “determine the options” available to Edwina and Katie ahead of the Games.

“Over the past 24 hours there has been much speculation online and in the media surrounding this issue, however EA’s focus at this time has to be on supporting our dressage and eventing athletes who are already on the ground in Tokyo and are now less than 48 hours away from representing Australia on the world’s largest sporting stage,” read the statement.

“Currently we have no answers regarding the possibility of our jumping athletes starting as individuals at Tokyo 2020. For the benefit of our jumping, and broader equestrian team, we want to have the matter resolved promptly and are working tirelessly with the Australian Olympic Committee to determine a solution. As soon as the information becomes available all our stakeholders will be informed.”

The statement added that EA encourages the wider Australian community to continue to show support for its athletes, who have dedicated the past five years to get to the Olympics, as they head into the competition phase of the Games.

The Australian Olympic showjumping team heading to the Tokyo Games has been revealed as a three-time Olympian is called up for the fourth time, a rider makes their Olympic debut, and a former New Zealand rider flies the Australian flag.

The Australian showjumping team consists of:

• Edwina Tops-Alexander and her own Identity Vitseroel
• Katie Laurie and Casebrooke Lomond, owned by Katie, her husband Jackson and Sheena Ross
• Jamie Kermond and Yandoo Oaks Constellation, owned by Kerrie Winning

The alternate is:

• Rowan Willis and Blue Movie, owned by Rowan, David and Elsa Willis, Renee Willis, Michael and Wendy Jackson and Warren Coventry

Edwina, 47, will be making her fourth Olympic appearance, having competed at Rio 2016, London 2012 and Beijing 2008. She has owned the 13-year-old mare Identity Vitseroel since 2019, and the pair enjoyed a top-10 placing in the grand prix at the Valkenswaard leg of the Global Champions Tour in early June, so will be heading to the Olympics in good form.

Edwina said she is “honoured” and “privileged” to have been chosen to represent Australia again, adding it’s a team that has never ridden together before.

“Although it will be a slightly different Olympics, it’s the one everyone has been waiting for,” she said. “It’s already an achievement in itself to be selected, and it’s a chance to proudly represent Australia, which doesn’t happen that often for the showjumping team.

“It means a lot to me to represent my country in the best possible way and I want to wish everyone else the best of luck.”

British-born Katie Laurie, 35, is stepping up for her second Olympic appearance – but her first for Australia. The daughter of Australian Olympic rider Jeff McVean and Nations Cup team rider Vicki represented New Zealand at the Beijing Games in 2008. In 2017 Katie and her husband Jackson moved to Australia, and in 2019 she began competing for the country.

Katie, who is now based in Okotoks, Canada, with Jackson, will ride Casebrooke Lomond, a 13-year-old stallion, whom she has had since he was three.

Making his Olympic debut is 36-year-old Jamie Kermond, who was part of Australia’s team at the 2018 Tryon World Equestrian Games with 15-year-old gelding Yandoo Oaks Constellation. The team took sixth place and thereby secured Australia’s Olympic qualification.

Alternate rider Rowan Willis will travel to Tokyo with the Olympic showjumping team with the 15-year-old mare Blue Movie. The pair joined Jamie on the WEG squad in Tryon in 2018, where Rowan took 12th individually.

A grandmother of three is to represent Australia at her sixth Olympic Games. Mary Hanna, 66, has been selected for the Australian Olympic dressage team on Calanta, along with Kelly Layne on Samhitas, and Simone Pearce on Destano.

Both Kelly and Simone will be making their Olympic dressage debuts, but Mary has already flown the flag for Australia at five Games: Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Mary, who has a fourth grandchild due in a few weeks, said she was looking forward to another Games.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be selected for my sixth Olympics,” she said. “It has been a truly testing time for all with so many challenges… a bit like walking a tightrope to get this far, and I am sure it’s been the same for my fellow team members.

“In spite of this I am so proud to be joining Kelly Layne and Simone Pearce to represent Australia, and I am sure together we will make a great team.”

Mary Hanna was the oldest athlete on the Australian team in Rio 2016, and the oldest competing Olympic equestrian. She has represented Australia five times at the World Equestrian Games, in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2014 and 2018.

Australian Olympic team chef de mission Ian Chesterman said: “Mary continues to inspire with decades of performing at world-class level, becoming the first woman to make six Olympic Games for Australia.

“Congratulations to all riders selected today, Australians will be thrilled to watch our equestrian team in action in Tokyo and to see Australian Olympic history made.

“Thank you to the families, supporters, coaches, grooms and Equestrian Australia who have helped these riders over decades to achieve their Olympic selection for Tokyo.”

Equestrian Australia CEO, Darren Gocher, said the records set by Hanna and Andrew Hoy are testament to the longevity and “proud legacy of equestrian sport within Australia”.

“Today we not only welcome the selection of a diverse and talented team of athletes, we also celebrate the core values of our sport, where men and women compete on equal terms and age is no barrier to achieving success at the highest level,” he said.

“I would like to congratulate all combinations selected to represent Australia in Tokyo, and to acknowledge the dedication, hard work and commitment of the athletes, owners, grooms and everyone involved in the Olympic journey.”

An Australian mule fanatic who imported an American mammoth donkey for his breeding programme hopes to raise the profile of mules in his country.

Queensland-based David Scholl, who has always kept horses and donkeys, bought his first mule Bruce around six years ago and “fell in love”. Since then David has expanded his herd to include 10 mules, and on 4 April he welcomed 15hh American mammoth jack Diamond Creek Moonwatcher, known as Moses, whom he plans to breed mules with.

David, whose mule herd ranges from 13hh to 17hh, told H&H he and his wife Di set out to expand their knowledge about mules and donkeys and travelled to the United States three years ago.

“The sole purpose of the trip was to find out as much as we can about mules and donkeys because we had really fallen in love with these mules,” he said

“We went to Bishop Mule Days in California, which is the biggest mule show in the States where 850 mules and donkeys compete over 10 days. We became friends with other breeders at the show and travelled across five states during the trip, learning more.”

David returned to America the following year and decided he wanted to import a donkey jack to Australia to breed with his horses.

“I really wanted to promote mules in this country; I believe there is a huge market for mules in the rural industry in Australia, they are extremely sure-footed, have a great work ethic and love doing a job. I set about looking for the ideal jack to breed from and in November 2020 Jonathan Waugh, who I became friends with at the mule show, offered me Diamond Creek Moonwatcher, known as Moses.

“The flights for equines only run every eight weeks from the States to Australia and the first flight in January was full so we had to wait until March. Moses spent 14 days in quarantine in the US, then had an 18-hour flight to Melbourne. He spent 14 days in quarantine in Melbourne, then travelled three days by road to me.”

David said Moses is “absolutely everything” Jonathan said he would be.

“We are honoured to have been given the opportunity to buy Moses. He’s beautiful and just incredible,” he said. “He’s very loving, and extremely vocal!” he said.

“We have artificially inseminated six of our mares and have one confirmed pregnancy so far. We have still to scan the other mares, but hope to welcome our first crop of mules. They will be available for sale after they have been weaned.”

Despite governance issues resulting in Equestrian Australia being placed in voluntary adminstration, the national federation has been making progress implementing recommendations made by the coroner after the death of two riders in cross-country accidents. H&H finds out more...

Safety remains Equestrian Australia’s (EA) top priority, despite uncertainty because the federation is in administration, as it pushes forward to implement a coroner’s recommendations after the deaths of two event riders.

On 9 June, EA announced it had gone into voluntary administration, stating, “clearly, the current model does not work”. This followed multiple changes in management including the fourth chair resigning in 16 months.

A letter of 3 June from the Australian Sports Committee (ASC) stated it had invested in the improvement of safety standards but EA had not been “forthcoming with reporting transparently” on the progress of this, as required under its sport investment agreement. Owing to “board turmoil” at EA, the ASC withdrew funding of $450,000 (£248,000) for 2020.

Following the inquests into the deaths of Caitlyn Fischer and Olivia Inglis in cross-country falls at Australian events in 2016, a 31-part recommendation report was released by deputy state coroner Derek Lee for safety improvements to be made by EA (news, 10 October 2019). This included implementing a rider representative system, a full-time national safety manager and a safety sub-committee and medical working group. It also added requirements to medical coverage rules.

EA reported on 24 June it had completed 25 of the 31 safety recommendations between January and June. These have been implemented in the key areas: safety officers, event organisation, serious incident management and review processes, athlete representatives and personal protection equipment.

EA national safety manager Meredith Chapman said “safety has been and remains our number one priority”, adding that safety is one reason change in the structure, operations and governance of EA is imminent.

“I have been very fortunate in the past six months to have met, worked and talked with many devoted and passionate people within this sport,” she said, in a letter to members.

“This experience to date has been inspiring and I believe my passion for safety is shared by many. Pro-active change is needed now to effectively meet the needs of our members, coaches, officials, funding bodies and everyone who embraces our sport.”

Six of the recommendations on course design, data collection, medical coverage and fence judging are “close to implementation”, while two require further work on logistics and process.

“The EA national safety manager has begun a review of the effectiveness of the implemented measures to identify possible areas for improvement. This review will also finalise the implementation of the six outstanding recommendations,” an EA spokesman told H&H.

“This review has been delayed by Covid-19 and the suspension of equestrian sport in Australia. However, it is anticipated that once the voluntary administration process has been completed and sport resumes in all states of Australia, a final report will be completed in 2020.”

The spokesman added the health and safety of members is “paramount” and EA is committed to making the sport as safe as possible.

The adminstration process

On 19 June, EA administrators held the first meeting of creditors. In a report following this, a second meeting was scheduled for 14 July, during which creditors may vote for EA to be wound up, which would result in the loss of recognition of EA with the FEI and the Australian Olympic Committee and the full withdrawal of funding by the ASC for equestrianism – but the administrators stated they do not consider liquidation to be in the best interests of creditors and members of EA.

Other options to the creditors are for EA to execute a deed of company arrangement, which includes working with bodies such as the FEI and ASC to improve governance and operating structure. The other option is for the administration to end.

A coroner has released a list of recommendations to improve eventing safety following the deaths of two young riders in Australia.

Magistrate Derek Lee, deputy state coroner for New South Wales, released his 31-point, +2,800-word recommendation to the president of eventing in New South Wales today (4 October) following the conclusion of the inquests into the deaths of Olivia Inglis and Caitlyn Fischer in 2016.

He found that Olivia died from chest injuries sustained in an accidental fall on the cross-country at Scone Horse Trials CNC2* (national intermediate) on 6 March, 2016 and recorded the manner of death was misadventure. He also recorded Caitlyn’s death was by misadventure as a result of head injuries while competing in the Sydney International Horse Trials in Horsley Park on 30 April the same year.

The inquests were divided into two phases. During the first phase, evidence was taken on certain factual matters particular to Olivia’s and Caitlyn’s incidents. During the second phase, evidence was taken on broader systemic issues related to the deaths, which is the information that has been published in full today.

The recommendations cover areas from a minimum age of fence judges, to course design, the level of medical coverage and maximum response times to each fence on the jumping phases, as well as how events are organised and the way in which data concerning “near-misses” is collected and recorded.

The coroner also recommended further research into personal protection equipment, that all fence judges are made aware of — and have access to — first aid training; that athlete representatives are present at all events and that serious incident management plans and provision reviews of serious incidents are developed for events.

A statement from Equestrian Australia said “improving safety is our number one priority”.

“EA acknowledges that the NSW coroner’s final report is constructive and endorses the work we have under way to strengthen safety and risk mitigation in our sport,” said the statement.

“Equestrian Australia is steadfast in its commitment to making Australia a world leader in equestrian safety and risk mitigation. With a view to implementing the recommendations, EA will now commence a period of consultation with key stakeholders across the country. The coroner has made some detailed recommendations, and we want to ensure that we consider the viability and practicality of the recommendations. We will update members on the outcome of these consultations.”

The organisation added it has already implemented a number of risk mitigation and safety improvements and is in the proves of introducing others, on the basis of the coroner’s recommendation.

These include adding more specific requirements to the rules around medical coverage, including the minimum skill sets and equipment that must be present for each phase, and the capacity for their rapid deployment around the venue.

They also include formalising an EA safety sub-committee, which includes a medical working group with the relevant expertise to consider and advise changes, plus appointing a national safety manager.

It has also implemented a standard programme for national eventing officials’ education and has improved its rider representative system, with clear role descriptions.

EA has introduced an incident review policy, ensuring serious incidents are investigated by an experienced panel with an independent chair, and has mandated the use of frangible devices for events at two-star level and above.

It is also working with EquiRatings on the quality index “traffic light” system, which gives a risk rating for horses entering each event based on past performances.

Young event horse, Lexington Furstin Affair (aka Claire), has adopted a rather unorthodox style to jumping into water across country, appearing to have sprouted some invisible wings.

The high-flying mare is owned and ridden by Australian eventer and coach Lesley Brodbeck, who is based in Moggill, Queensland.

The six-year-old’s brilliant enthusiasm was captured during a cross-country schooling day at Noosa in Queensland (picture below) .

“I often coach on horseback and then jump a few fences myself,” said Lesley. “This picture was taken during a recent coaching session of mine and was caught on camera by a rider’s mother, Kiranee Heeramens.

“Claire has always had a habit of over-jumping into water. She has been competing for 12 months and we are about to hit the 2019 eventing circuit in Australia — she will be aimed at her first one-star event in February. She has just turned six and is a talented young event horse, who also loves her showjumping.”

Claire also displayed her exuberant antics during a one-day event at Toowoomba in southern Queensland (main picture) — once again “flying” into the water.

The Queensland-based rider trains a team of eventers at home and other riders in the area. She is also the equestrian coach at Stuartholme School for girls.

Lesley started her eventing career in England, where she was trained as a young rider for several years before returning to Australia.

“I was selected to represent Australia at the 1986 World Championships on my horse Montaego Gold,” said Lesley. “I am actually returning to England this year — for the first time in 37 years — and I’m looking forward to heading to Badminton to watch.”

It certainly looks like Lesley has a very scopey horse on her hands — perhaps a future star?

4. Teaching riding in the USA

Why not share your equestrian knowledge with children at an American summer camp? You could be teaching skills and giving lessons for several hours a day, usually in hour-long periods, generally in addition to caring for the horses. Riding programmes vary greatly from camp to camp and may consist of simply teaching, some horse care and ring work, or of more advanced lessons plus trail rides. Having equestrian qualifications will really strengthen your application. These include the Pony Club B or C test and BHS qualifications, or the UKCC equivalent, ranging from the groom’s certificate in horse knowledge and care to BHS assistant instructor level one.

Eventer Lissa Green has revealed that she will compete under the Australian flag in future.

Lissa’s British mother is six-time Badminton winner Lucinda Green and her Australian father David represented his country at three Olympics, winning team gold in 1992.

“With my father David Green being an Aussie and my mother Lucinda Green being British there has always been an option of which country’s flag I would compete under,” said Lissa.

“I have often found myself waving an Australian flag with one hand and a British one with the other.

“I was born in Britain so it felt natural to be a part of the British system, something I have always admired and been extremely grateful for.

“However when I went back to Australia as an adult, I fell in love with the country and it has captivated me ever since.

“I guess I am just an Aussie at heart, so for me, it feels right to compete under the Australian flag, something of which I am immensely proud.

“As an Australian event rider based in the UK, I am extremely grateful that I will continue to train and compete within the very best eventing scene in the world.”

Lissa, 29, competed at her first Badminton in 2017 aboard the Ali G Syndicate’s Malin Head Clover. The pair completed the cross-country with 20 penalties, but unfortunately had to withdraw before the showjumping.

She is entered for this year’s Badminton with the 14-year-old gelding Hollyfield, with whom she finished fourth at Cappoquin CCI3* and fifth at Belton CIC2* last year.

Australia’s eventing high performance manager Chris Webb said he is “delighted” to welcome Lissa to “the family of Australian riders”.

“With a rich heritage in top level eventing we are excited to have Lissa representing us and look forward to watching her compete and progress under the Australian flag,” he said.

Trailblazing jockey Michelle Payne has taken “full responsibility” after testing positive for a banned substance.

Racing Victoria held a stewards inquiry today (29 June) after a urine sample taken at Swan Hill race meeting on 11 June tested positive for the appetite suppressant phentermine. She was prescribed the drug, but said she did not check whether it breached anti-doping rules.

Michelle admitted the breach and was suspended for four weeks from 23 June.

A statement from Racing Victoria said stewards took into account her “guilty plea, good record and remorse” when considering their decision.

“Ms Payne was also advised that she must provide a urine sample clear of any banned substances before being permitted to ride trackwork and in trials,” added the statement.

Speaking to journalists after the hearing, Michelle gave her “sincere apologies”.

“I would like to make it clear that I take full responsibility for what has happened today,” she said.

“The onus is 100% with me as a rider to know what I am taking and the rules around it regardless of whether is has been prescribed to me or not.

“I regret not seeking all guidance and making certain that any treatment would lead to a breach of the rules and why we are here today.

“I wasn’t thorough and that was completely my fault.

“My sincere apologies to everyone that this has happened in the manner that it has.

“I accept the stewards’ decision and appreciate that it is in keeping with other penalties for riders in the breach of this rule.

“I am very much looking forward to finding a solution and working with my surgeon.

“I look forward to working hard and being in great shape on my return to racing.”

Four dogs who will be trained to help people with special needs have been secured through a memorial fund for a young showjumper.

British citizen Billie Kinder was 12 years old when she died in an accident at home in Sydney last May.

A talented rider, her wins included titles at the New South Wales Interschools Championships in 2015.

She was also a member of Sydney Showjumping Club and volunteered with the Riding for the Disabled Association.

Following her death, Billie’s family released a collection of her poems and other writings — titled Hope — in honour of her wish to write a book.

Money raised through its sales is given to charities through the Billie Kinder Foundation to help young people in palliative care or who need assistance dogs.

Funds from the book have already gone towards three dogs in Australia, and now the trust has secured a puppy in the UK through charity Dogs for Good.

The Labrador cross golden retriever, named Hope, is 14 months old and is being prepared to become a fully-trained assistance dog.

“Hope is now learning all about the world around her, looked after by her volunteer puppy socialiser,” a Dogs for Good spokesman told H&H.

She is attending puppy classes and is also learning to cope with busy places, such as shopping centres, trains, and buses, that she will encounter as a working dog.

“At around 16 to 17 months old, Hope will start work with Dogs for Good trainers and instructors,” added the spokesman.

“She will spend around six to eight months learning the vital skills she needs such as picking up dropped items, fetching the phone, loading and unloading the washing machine, calling lifts and helping someone dress and undress.

“[She will also learn] how to distract or comfort a child with autism when they’re angry, anxious or distressed and to keep them safe when they are out and about.”

Billie’s book is published independently by her parents, Danny and David Kinder, and is being sold in more than 12 countries.

“When we first thought of publishing Billie’s writing we couldn’t imagine just how the book would take off, but it has created its own momentum with families, libraries and we are now also hearing from orphanages,” said Danny.

“To be able to support the provision of Response Dogs to help young people in need is a wonderful legacy and we know that Billie would have been proud to be helping other children.”

The first proceeds from the book went to Bear Cottage, a palliative care home in Sydney for children and their families, to pay for their resident dog named Frankie.

A seizure response dog has also been secured for a six-year-old with epilepsy, and the third donation went to assistance dogs Australia to help fund a autism service dog for a child.

The Australian equestrian community has been left saddened after the deaths of two of its members last weekend.

On Sunday (29 May) a 12-year-old girl died after she was trampled by the horse she was leading.

Billie Kinder was found with serious head, chest and abdominal injuries at a property in Pitt Town, Hawkesbury.

It is believed that the horse she was leading was spooked and trampled her.

She was treated by police and paramedics, but sadly died in the ambulance rescue helicopter on the way to hospital.

Equestrian New South Wales chief executive paid tribute to “one of our best young riders”.

“Billie competed at the NSW Interschools Championships in 2014 and 2015,” he said.

“In 2015, she was the Champion Primary School Showjumping Rider and Overall Primary School Champion Rider.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Billie’s family at this very sad time.”

Sydney Showjumping Club (SSJC), of which Billie was a member, also sent their condolences to her family.

“It’s with tremendous sadness that the SSJC committee advises that Billie Kinder, a much loved and admired member of Sydney Jump Club, tragically died yesterday,” said a statement on Monday (30 May).

“A rider with talent beyond her years, Billie, her sister Charlie, and her parents are very active supporters of SSJC and valued members of our show jumping community.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to Danny, David, Charlie and their family.”

The tragedy occurred a day after Australian racehorse trainer Hana Dickson, 31, died in a riding accident (28 May).

A statement from the Western Australian Racing Trainers’ Association (WARTA) said it is understood she was riding at a property in Hopeland when she may have hit a tree.

“Hana was a popular young trainer and in a tragic irony she was expected to return to racing at Belmont with Disciple after an absence of a couple of years,” said a WARTA spokesman.

He added the WARTA committee and its members offer their “deepest and heartfelt condolences” to Hana’s family “at this most heartbreaking time”.

WARTA president Trevor Andrews said that Hana was respected by her peers and had been involved in training for around 10 years.

“Everybody is just so shocked,” he said. “She died doing what she loved, but she was too young.”

Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, will miss Royal Ascot after sustaining serious abdominal injuries in a fall.

Michelle made history on 3 November last year when she rode the 100-1 shot Prince Of Penzance to victory in Australia’s famous race.

The 30-year-old was admitted to Mildura Base Hospital on Monday (23 May) afternoon with acute abdominal pain after she was unseated from Dutch Courage in the seventh race of the day at Mildura racecourse.

A statement from the Victorian Jockeys’ Association, in Australia, said she is not expected to ride again during the 2015-16 season, which ends on 31 July.

Scans showed she had no serious structural bone damage.

Michelle was later transferred to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition, where later tests and scans revealed she had a serious injury to her abdomen.

The statement added that her surgery today went “successfully” and she is expected to remain in hospital for at least a week.

Yesterday Michelle tweeted her thanks to all her well-wishers.

Victorian Jockeys’ Association chief executibe Des O’Keeffe said she is receiving “the very best of care” at the Alfred Hospital.

“On behalf of the Payne family, I’d like to extend their appreciation to everyone for their well wishes and support for Michelle,” he said.

“Today’s news of an extended absence from the saddle though is unfortunate for Michelle who was looking forward to riding overseas during the winter months, including at Royal Ascot.

“I know that her determination will see her on the road to recovery in the quickest time possible.”

The family of teenager Caitlyn Fischer, who died in an eventing accident at Sydney International Horse Trials, has paid tribute to a “gifted and determined young woman”.

Caitlyn, 19, suffered a fatal accident at the second fence of the CCI* course on Saturday (30 April).

She was riding her own 12-year-old gelding, Ralphie, who was not seriously injured.

“Our daughter and sister Caitlyn was a gifted, spirited and quietly determined young woman,” read the statement from Ailsa Carr, Mark Fischer and Kristofer Fischer.

“Always striving to do her best, Caitlyn was an exemplary school student and disciplined horse rider.

“Caitlyn’s horses loved her and she loved them in return.”

The family added that for Caitlyn, it was never about the “ribbons or accolades”, her aim was always to improve on her last performance.

“The main boy in her life was her best friend Ralphie and as a family we were so proud of the dedication that Caitlyn showed her horses,” they said.

“Even during her final year of school Caitlyn would wake at 4.30 every morning to make sure ‘Ralph’ was exercised and fed.

“We are pleased that Ralphie did not sustain any serious injuries and will be able to return home soon.

“Our hearts are aching for our daughter and we have been overwhelmed by the support extended to us from members of our extended family, the horse riding and school communities.”

Caitlyn will be cremated at a private ceremony with a service celebrating her life to be held in Bairnsdale.

Equestrian Australia has announced today (Wedneday, 4 May) that riders entered in the cancelled two- and three-star classes can compete this weekend and a minute’s silence will take place to remember Caitlyn.

“Following the tragic death of Caitlyn Fischer and after careful consideration and consultation with riders, officials and volunteers, the Sydney International Horse Trials organising committee has decided to offer riders who had entered the three and two star events the opportunity to restart this weekend,” read a statement from the organisation.

“The event will be open to the public and spectators are invited to attend to pay their respects to Caitlyn, who will be remembered during a minute’s silence following the conclusion of the showjumping on Sunday (8 May).”

A cull of Australia’s wild horses is set to go ahead in Queensland.

Brumbies are found across Australia and there have been a number of slaughters in the past.

In October 2000, there was a public outcry after around 600 horses died during an aerial cull in Guy Fawkes National Park, New South Wales (NSW).

The Queensland action — which is not state wide — will take place in the Clemant State Forest.

A Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service spokesman told H&H that over several years, the number of horses has increased in the forest and they pose an “immediate risk” to highway traffic.

He added that two people have recently died from collisions with horses, including a 15-year-old boy who was killed when the car he was in hit a dead horse last month (30 September).

“The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing undertakes regular programs to control [wild horse] numbers to sustainable and manageable levels in selected locations,” he told H&H.

“Planning for the control of feral horses in the Clemant State Forest and Paluma National Park in northern Queensland has now commenced.

“The Department is working to have the operation start as soon as possible, however we cannot definitively say at this point when control measures will commence.

“[The authority] prides itself on the humane removal of animals and a specialist vet will be appointed to oversee the removal program.”

He also said they will work “within strict guidelines” to ensure the cull is conducted humanely.

Jill Pickering, president of the Australian Brumby Alliance (ABA), told H&H that she has advised Queensland officials of a number of non-lethal alternatives to the cull.

These include fencing, speed awareness campaigns, trapping and rehoming as well as fertility control.

Meanwhile, New South Wales (NSW) is also reviewing its wild horse management programme for Kosciuszko National Park.

A draft wild horse management plan is being put together by an independent body and is due to be released in December.

This would then be on public exhibition for two months during January and February.

The final plan is expected to be released mid-2016.

“The ABA has put forward a range of non-lethal options in public forums, official meetings and formal submissions,” added Ms Pickering.

She added that the group is against aerial culls and wants scientific evidence to prove that Brumbies are not being wrongly blamed for damaging the environment.

“It is impossible to get a clean kill shot, when firing at a moving target from a moving platform,” she said.

This year’s Badminton winner Sam Griffiths has got the call-up with superstar mare Paulank Brockagh. British-based Sam will be hoping for better luck at this championships after 2 unfortunate eliminations at the London Olympics and Kentucky in 2010.

2010 Badminton winner Paul Tapner was leading after cross-country at Badminton this year with Kilronan, but ended up fourth after having four rails down in the showjumping. Paul represented Australia in Kentucky in 2010 but missed out on Olympic selection in London.

The only selected rider not to have represented Australia in a previous WEG is Bill Levett. Bill was forced to withdraw as reserve for the London 2012 after an injury to his ride One Two Many NJ.

The reserve team will be announced on or before 23 July 2014.

The tide may be changing as the London 2012 factor entices overseas dressage riders not just to the sport’s traditional heartland of Europe, but to the UK.

Australian grand prix rider Jessica Greelish, who emigrated from her homeland to Denmark in 2011, has relocated to the Cotswolds this winter.

She has moved her 3 horses from Andreas Helgstrand’s yard in Vodskov, northern Denmark to Emile Faurie’s Heath Farm, near Chipping Norton.

She said “the strong British dressage scene” was an important factor.

“I came to see Emile and spent some time at Heath Farm watching him ride and train,” Jessica told H&H. “He has a very calm and effective approach, which I really liked — along with many years’ experience; his CV is quite something.”

“I wanted to move somewhere where English was the first language and after meeting the professional and fun team here, it was an easy decision.”

She trains with Emile 6 days a week with all 3 horses.

“There is a great atmosphere and the horses are happy, responding very well to Emile’s training style and ethos,” she said. “London being on the doorstep is great for me too.”

The horses are Lancaster, an 11-year-old Danish warmblood, Cavalia, a 7-year-old by Sir Donnerhall, and an Australian-bred 5-year-old, Riverndell Jewel, whom she brought over from Australia.

Lancaster will be aimed at selection for a berth in the Australian team at the World Equestrian Games this September, while Cavalia’s main aim is small tour by the end of the year.

Although she found her 2 older horses at Andreas Helgstrand’s — where she was based for 2½ years — she felt the time was right for a change.

“Jessica just wanted to try something else,” Andreas told H&H, “and we stopped in a good way.”
