You don’t get to be eventing world number one without a string of sound horses at top level. Horses that not only reach the heights of five-star but continue to compete year in, year out are both rare and meticulously managed. For the new world number one Harry Meade, who has five eventers competing at CCI5*, horse management is inextricably entwined with his stellar results.

Anyone who has ever competed knows how critical soundness is to longevity, and it’s no surprise that Harry leads no stone unturned to give his horses the best possible chance of staying sound. Here’s how he does it…

Soundness underpins Harry Meade’s horse management system

Harry is emphatic about balance and softness in horses’ training and competing, alongside a couple of everyday basics – shoeing and icing.

“I like all my horses to be shod on a four-week cycle,” he says. “You don’t have to be an engineer to understand that if the angle of the foot changes by a small degree it will change the angle of the pastern and the load on the soft tissue structures.

“You might save a set or two a year shoeing less often, but if that increases the chance of the horse having a leg injury and missing a year, it’s a false economy.”

For the horses in more demanding fitness work the legs are iced after every canter session.

All Harry’s horses have stints on a water treadmill, particularly pre-season before the fitness work takes over. Harry shattered both his elbows in 2013 and knows “from my own injuries that the resistance of working in water is the best kind of rehab, as well as good pre-season conditioning without concussion”.

While icing and cold water are age-old remedies to help combat inflammation, Harry is a fan of the more modern laser therapy to manage injury, using two types of Pioneer Multi-Radiance lasers on his yard.

“Lasering is a well-proven science and really effective, both in the acute stages of an injury and in the ongoing management of any kind of weakness,” he says.

“We have a class one laser, which is a handheld device like a shower head. It’s great for accessible, superficial injuries like a puncture wound or a rub where time is an issue and you want to accelerate healing.

“We also use a class four laser, which goes much deeper – for the treatment areas of past weaknesses in soft-tissue structures. It’s not a magic wand, but I’m in no doubt that it’s very beneficial.”

Beneath the surface: going concerns

A final asset as soundness goes is the surfaces on which he works his horses. Harry trains on grass as much as possible, estimating that from April to November, “95% of their work is done on grass”.

“Working on a variety of surfaces, including soft ground, is really important for conditioning legs and joints,” he says.

“When I resurfaced our arena I did a lot of research, trying to find something that mimics springy old turf with life in it, and on which they can twist, slide and move, but not jar.”

He ended up with a bespoke surface from Martin Collins.

“It has life in it,” Harry says. “You can feel the horses let go – especially when jumping big fences or in extended canter on a circle.”

Harry adds: “The sport gets really interesting when the horses reach the top of the tree, so we want to keep them sound and fit into their later years, helping them in every way we can.”

Harry Meade’s attention to every detail of horse management to promote soundness reflects a deep-rooted philosophy built around longevity. With soundness as his cornerstone, it’s no wonder his horses are flourishing at the very top of the sport.

The Government is banning the use of waste carpet in equestrian surfaces, by withdrawing a statement “likely before 1 January”.

In a briefing to Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), the Environment Agency (EA) said: “Following a review of the available evidence on chemicals in carpets, the EA has decided to withdraw RPS248 on the use of shredded waste carpet in equestrian surfacing”.

H&H reported in 2021 that the EA was cracking down on materials used in equestrian surfaces such as arenas and gallops, and that the regulatory position statement (RPS) legislation had come into force.

The RPS, which applied to waste carpet that had been shredded or in fibre form before it was used, covered discarded carpet fibres and offcuts from new carpets made in the UK and the EU classed as waste, and treated post-consumer waste carpet.

The rules included limits on the amount and type of carpet that could be used, the treatment it had had and the distance between surfaces and watercourses.

An EA spokesman confirmed to H&H last week that this RPS will be withdrawn.

“As a result of our increased knowledge about how carpets are manufactured, the Environment Agency is currently working closely with the carpet recycling industry, including Carpet Recycling UK, on the withdrawal of the regulatory position statement that would allow the use of shredded waste carpet in equestrian surfacing in future,” he said.

“At the current time, owners do not need to take any action, such as removing existing equestrian surfaces containing waste carpet.”

In the briefing to CRUK, an “independent non-profit membership association working with manufacturers, distributors, contractors, retailers, fitters and the waste sector to divert carpet waste from landfill”, the EA said its decision comes following a review of evidence on chemicals in carpets.

“On withdrawal of the RPS, the use of shredded waste carpet in equestrian surfacing will not be allowed under any regulatory positions or exemptions from environmental permitting in England,” the briefing states.

It adds that a 2012 “low-waste risk position” allowed use of waste carpet in surfaces, but that this was replaced by RPS248 as “the environmental risks no longer supported this activity being low-risk”, owing to “uncertainty on chemicals risk, microplastic releases and non-conforming material contamination”.

Subsequent evidence and data from CRUK working group members “informed the decision” to withdraw the RPS.

The briefing cites chemicals and microplastics found in most shredded carpet that may have a negative effect on human and animal health and on the environment.

“In future, the regulatory discussions will be about whether the level of contamination is so high as to require hazardous waste incineration of waste carpet,” it states. “Our initial thinking is that the proportion that exceeds the limit is probably too small for us to take that approach. However, we must then ensure that carpet containing these chemicals is managed in an environmentally sound manner and can no longer consider it low enough risk to be used in equestrian surfacing.”

The EA added that it “may consider permit applications for the use of waste carpet from facilities that have effective measures to identify and exclude carpets containing chemicals of concern and control release of microplastics. For example, the use of carpet manufacturing waste of known benign chemical composition and composed only of natural fibres might be considered”. The briefing says it is likely the RPS will be withdrawn before the end of the year.

A CRUK spokesman told H&H the CRUK working group is in discussions with the EA.

Mark Gilbert of Advanced Equine Surfaces, which owns Carpet Gallop, told H&H the withdrawal has major financial implications for companies in the marketplace, and potentially for the number of businesses that have carpet fibre in their arenas.

“The EA created RPS 248 and this has worked well with the support of the industry leaders,” he said. “We’ll be going back to them to say we need more time to digest this and understand what needs to be done to ensure its use can continue. We’ll continue doing what we do within the regulations we work to.”

There are a huge number of factors that help contribute to a successful Olympic Games, and Tokyo 2020 is no different to those that have gone before it. From the horses to the riders, their support team and volunteers and officials – all play their role. But one of the key components to equestrian sport at these Olympics is the arena surface. Here, we find out a little more about the Olympic equestrian arena surface at the Tokyo Games…

Olympic equestrian arena surface: what you need to know

Creating the perfect under-hoof going (known as “footing” in some countries) for the arena-based equestrian sports has become an exact science over the years, with a complex layering system that ensures the best surfaces for the horses to perform on. And it’s crucial for any horse, let alone for those competing in the pure dressage and showjumping, the para dressage or in the eventing dressage and showjumping phases at an international championship.

The Olympic footing at the Baji Koen Equestrian Park in Tokyo – with exactly the same composition on the main field of play and all the training arenas – is top quality sand mixed with roughly 1.5% of polyester textile fibres. The sand provides impact firmness and grip, and the fibres provide cushioning, elasticity and responsiveness, as the FEI has explained.

“Sand is the most important ingredient in footing, and then the textiles and fibres are like the spices in your soup,” Oliver Hoberg, the man in charge of the arena surfaces at the Tokyo Games, says.

Keeping that mix right, and maintaining the going is all part of his daily routine, which involves raking and watering, but the balance needs to be expertly monitored so that the surface allows horses to produce optimal performances.

Oliver works in extremely close cooperation with the FEI’s footing expert, Professor Lars Roepstorff, the scientific brain in the partnership who conducts daily checks on all the equestrian park arenas with a “mechanical hoof”, originally created for testing racetrack surfaces. The hoof, which has now been adapted for the different equestrian sports disciplines, mimics the load placed on the horse’s leg and hoof when performing a dressage test or landing over a fence, whether that’s on sand or on grass.

“Special sensors measure both horizontal and vertical forces as the mechanical hoof hits the ground and those sensors measure the response from the ground so we can actually measure what the horse feels when it jumps on the surface,” Professor Roepstorff explains. “The footing is absolutely crucial, both to performance and to the health of the horse, and the different functional properties of the footing will affect how the horse performs.”

Those different functional properties allow for “tuning” of the surface, depending on the sport. But the only way to produce perfect going is through perfect maintenance to ensure uniformity on all parts of the arenas.

“The footing is only as good as the level of maintenance,” Oliver says. “In fact, maintenance is just as important as the type of surface used in the arena.”

With the correct level of maintenance, modern all-weather footing lasts up to 20 years, so there’s a great post-Games legacy plan, as all the arenas will remain in-situ when the venue is handed back post-Paralympics to its owners, the Japan Racing Association, so that they can continue to be used for equestrian sport for many years to come.

New legislation that sets a legal, industry standard for how waste carpet can be used in arena surfaces has come into force. H&H speaks to lawmakers and industry figures to find out what this will mean

A major step has been made towards ensuring arena surfaces are safe and not harmful to the wider environment.

The Environment Agency (EA) is steadily cracking down on materials used in equestrian surfaces, and this new move comes with strict criteria.

New legislation that sets a legal, industry standard – known as a “regulatory position statement” – for how waste carpet can be used in arena surfaces has come into force.

“This regulatory position statement only applies to waste carpet that has been shredded or is in fibre form before it is used,” states the EA.

It adds that this covers discarded carpet fibres and offcuts from new carpets manufactured in the UK and the EU that are classed as waste, and treated post-consumer waste carpet with all physical contaminants including, but not limited to metal, carpet grippers and non-carpet based plastics removed.

The strict new rules include set limits on the amount of carpet fibre in new all-weather arenas and surface top-ups, what sort of waste carpet can be used and the treatment it receives, and the distance between a new surface and watercourses as well as other protected sites (50m).

The EA must also be informed before it is used, and records kept for at least two years.

The industry knew these rules were coming and has been working with the EA to shape them.

A Defra spokesman confirmed to H&H that the new regulations only apply for new surfaces and top-ups of existing surfaces, and that it does not apply retrospectively, so there is no need for existing surfaces to be removed.

Carpet Gallop managing director Mark Gilbert told H&H the new regulation is a “great outcome”.

“The industry has worked hard behind the scenes with the project driven by Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) and brought together a range of suppliers who on a day-to-day basis compete,” he said.

He added that the new regulation is “not so much a victory for our sector, but a start of a process” for a final “end-of-waste” position for carpet fibre to be achieved.

“In addition, we collectively showed how arenas and gallops should be built – regardless of the surface chosen – to avoid any impact on the environment. Planning permission should be gained by anyone building a gallop or an arena, and they should build it with correct drainage and surface containment,” he said.

Mr Gilbert added that concerns over other types of surface were also highlighted to the EA, and reminded equestrians that the use of PVC granulate is banned (news, 16 August 2018).

“[Carpet Gallop is] committed to making improvements in line with the regulations and will continue as a major contributor to the efforts of CRUK and our competitors as together we are making huge inroads that ultimately benefit all who have a deep-rooted love of all things equine,” he said.

Justin Chittenden, managing director of Equine Health Centre whose brands include Equivia Equestrian Surface, told H&H: “There has always been some concern, both on an environmental and user front, about the use of waste carpet in equestrian surfaces due to the level of contaminants, such as metal and plastics, that find their way into the surface.”

He added that the company has always used clean, post-industrial fibres that are permitted under the new regulations, rather than post-consumer fibres.

“This provides many benefits in so much as we are using a by-product of manufacturing. We use clean and traceable components and we can be certain of using fibres that are both safe for the environment and for the horses that use the surface,” he said.

“We’re pleased to see the Government and the Environment Agency taking this issue seriously by issuing the regulations and further clarification on what constitutes waste carpet.”

A new Environment Agency ruling affects the use of shredded carpet fibre in riding surfaces. H&H speaks to industry figures to find out their thoughts, and what this means

Rules on waste carpet being used in riding arena surfaces are changing this year in a move that has been welcomed by the industry.

The Environment Agency (EA) is changing its guidance on the use of shredded waste carpet in arena surfaces as of 17 June. While carpet fibre can continue to be used in riding arena surfaces, companies providing these surfaces must ensure they comply with the new regulatory controls.

This is not to be confused with other fibres that are used in many arena surfaces and will continue to be permitted under the new rules.

Defra, which sponsors the EA and is working with the carpet recycling industry and equestrian surface providers on this matter, confirmed to H&H that there is no requirement at present for existing surfaces containing waste carpet to be removed and replaced.

The reasoning behind the decision comes from research into persistent organic pollutants and concerns over microplastics.

Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), a non-profit trade association set up in 2008 to help the sector to use carpet waste as a resource and divert waste from landfill, was approached by the EA in September and is working with them.

“Carpet fibre in equestrian surfaces has grown in popularity and volume, as many of your readers will know, and understand there are advantages for using this kind of fibre relating to durability and performance as well as cushioning qualities,” CRUK manager Adnan Zeb-Khan told H&H, adding that the association’s aim is to “demonstrate best practice and produce standards for all involved in the supply chain”.

“As an independent organisation, CRUK is in a strong position to help the EA and the carpet sector through discussion and demonstration of testing for pollutants and microplastics, and successfully had the initial transitional period extended from three to six months, which is due to end on 17 June 2021.

“Through the setting up of a ‘working group’, CRUK is talking to and will continue to speak to the sector and the EA, seeking for a favourable outcome for both, to help with tightening standards and quality relating to the use of carpet fibres in equestrian surfaces.”

Justin Chittenden, managing director of Equine Health Centre which owns Equivia All-Weather Equestrian Surfaces, has welcomed the news.

“The new regulations are a huge step forward for the equine surfaces industry as it will help to ensure that surfaces are free from contaminants and are safer for both horses and the environment,” Mr Chittenden told H&H, adding that the brand has always used clean post-industrial fibres, as opposed to the material that is being banned.

“We take great pride in sourcing clean and traceable components. Sand and fibre arena surfaces are incredibly popular and riders should take comfort in the fact that they will still be available to purchase them moving forward, but they will be safer and cleaner for all involved.”

Carpet Gallop has also welcomed the EA’s position.

Carpet Gallop managing director Mark Gilbert told H&H: “We are actively in support of the changes to the regulations that will improve the industry. Carpet Gallop is in communication with the EA along with our partners and supply chain.

“Supplying affordable surfaces will still be our aim and we are committed to that end.”

Mr Gilbert, who said Carpet Gallop Ltd supplies a range of arena surface products alongside carpet fibre, but has been the subject of some vocal customer complaints on social media, added that the company has high levels of customer satisfaction.

“Those in our supply chain who have not been able to improve quality are no longer part of our business,” he said.

As summer ends, our thoughts turn to coping with whatever wintry weather is in store. Hannah Lemieux finds out what you need to consider if investing in an indoor school

Every rider will have most likely dreamt about access to an indoor arena at some point. Whether it is during the heat of high summer or the lashings of rain and unbearable cold of the winter, an indoor arena will be on many riders’ wishlists.

Should this dream become a reality, deciding where to start with constructing an indoor arena can be a minefield of information – where to put it, installation of the correct base and drainage, and, of course, what surface to put down.

If you have an existing building that you think would make a perfect indoor school, the best place to start is by contacting your local council and establishing if and what planning permission is required; then you can move on to the practicalities.

“If the building has a good, hard and level floor already, for example heavily compacted dirt or a concrete floor, a surface can be laid straight on to it. We usually have to do some internal levelling anyway, and in the past we have dropped an existing floor to provide more height above the surface,” says Linda Wright, the co-directer of Charles Britton Equestrian Construction, and Charles’ partner.

The company, which has built up a large portfolio over the past 41 years, converted an agricultural building into an indoor work area for Olympic gold medal-winning showjumper Nick Skelton.

“Planning consent is required when there is a change of use,” she adds. “Similarly, if you are wanting to add a roof on to an outdoor arena, this is achievable but permission is needed.

“If you are putting a roof on an uncoated surface [without a wax coating], it is necessary to introduce a means of watering. Surface water accumulated by the roof will need to be dealt with, however, and this could be captured and used to water the surface with.”

If starting from scratch with an indoor school, what is the most important aspect to consider after planning permission?

Linda references giving yourself enough time and the importance of the groundworks as top of the essentials list.

“The groundworks involved in an indoor arena are different to an outdoor because the foundations must properly support the steel or a glulam [laminated] timber portal frame. The base structure must be supportive but, unlike an outdoor arena, it is not necessary to be free-draining,” adds Linda. “You also need to think about if there is a sufficient power supply or if a new supply is needed.”

With the additional cost of the building, roofing, delivery of materials, erection and lighting, it is no surprise that an indoor arena will cost considerably more than an outdoor arena. However, in the long run, having an indoor arena can be more beneficial. Not being exposed to bad weather conditions means that surfaces indoors can last that bit longer. So while not a cheap option, an indoor arena is arguably more convenient, especially in our unpredictable climate.

Individual needs

What surface to put down in your new indoor arena can present another hurdle. Approaching a specialist surfacing company and asking for advice based on your individual needs is the best way to decipher what is best for you and your budget.

Martin Collins innovated the concept of the wax-coated surface around 40 years ago, having founded his eponymous arena surface company. The business is responsible for surfacing multiple top competition venues, including the London International Horse Show at Olympia.

“A wax-coated surface is better suited for an indoor arena with no irrigation required, and it is easier to maintain. If you opt for a sand and fibre surface it would need an irrigation system in place,” explains Martin’s son Nicholas Collins, director of the Martin Collins Group.

“You have to consider potential dust and airflow in an indoor arena, as they require good ventilation – a wax-coated surface is much cleaner.

“People are guided by budget, but regardless of what surface you choose, the base underneath it is very important and needs to be laser levelled. In an indoor arena, the base doesn’t need to drain, therefore we recommend an MOT type one or similar with a blind-off layer – compacted and well rolled to provide a solid foundation.”

The Martin Collins Group offers clients two distinct surfaces, the Ecotrack and Activ-Track. Both are dust-free, do not require irrigation and can be installed indoors or outdoors.

Described as “the superior arena surface for show venues and professional riders” by the company, Ecotrack is a blend of mixed fibres, high-grade industrial washed silica sand and PVC granules, blended with a wax coating and designed with the competition horse in mind.

The Activ-Track surface is the more affordable option and is suitable for all disciplines. It is not designed for heavy use like the Ecotrack, but instead for the smaller professional yard or rider wanting to enjoy all the benefits of a wax-coated surface.

‘Renewed moisture and bounce’

The industry of arena surfaces is forever evolving, and if a full wax surface is not within your budget, Equimulsion – where a wax coating is incorporated with an existing surface – could be a viable option.

“Equimulsion can be used as a repair product, sprayed and mixed into a tired waxed or non-waxed surface,” says Colin Ellison, the general manager at Combi-Ride. “It gives a surface renewed moisture and bounce with a consistent stable footing. It can also be mixed with a dry surface to create an entirely new waxed surface. We can supply this from £6.90 plus VAT per square metre – if necessary we can test how much wax a surface already contains, to advise the quantity of Equimulsion required, and this saves the expense of having to replace the whole surface.

Combi-Ride also offers a “dual stabiliser”, which is a combination of nylon-based polymer fibres and fine rubber crumb.

“When the dual stabiliser is combined with silica sand, a consistent and stable riding surface is created, to provide the support you and your horse require,” adds Colin.

If choosing a non-waxed sand-and-fibre surface, a water irrigation system could be required to keep the surface at its optimum. Combi-Ride can install a sub-surface irrigation system. The “leaky pipe system” comprises many pipes releasing water automatically into the sand surface – you can then control how much water is released.

While creating your own indoor arena may initially feel overwhelming, the best first step is to approach an arena and surfacing company that can explain the options based on your budget and help bring your dream indoor arena to fruition.

An indoor transformation

When Anfisa Ershova purchased an old riding school six years ago, she went about not only transforming the stables but also the existing indoor arena with the help of local builders.

“First of all we had to strip the asbestos cladding on the indoor arena and dispose of that safely, then remove the dirt that was being used as a surface,” explains Anfisa, who runs a livery yard in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and owns dressage horses.

“We sandblasted the frame and painted it, then used perforated cladding for the walls and insulated roof panels. I am really proud of the new cladding because it keeps it cool while also allowing plenty of airflow. We sourced curved plastic kickboards, adding an Andrews Bowen Prowax surface and Equestrian Reflections mirrors.”

Anfisa was hoping to keep the existing roof before it became apparent it would need to be replaced. It was the most costly addition, at £50,000 including the lighting. The surface set her back around £30,000 and the kickboards were £15,000.

The transformation took five months to complete and Anfisa is delighted with the outcome, despite having to stretch her budget because of the roof.

The perfect spot

Firstly, you will have to contact your local council and obtain planning permission.

The location for your new arena would ideally be on a level and well-draining area in a beautiful location. However, we don’t all have that option, so work with an experienced arena contractor to guide you through the process and avoid any pit-falls — they will advise you on the most suitable location.

Talk to the experts

There are many surface options these days suited to different requirements, disciplines and budgets. Reputable arena surface companies will be able to recommend their surfaces local to you and arrange a site visit. They will also be able to recommend the best surface options for you, provide samples, information and quotes.

Is there enough room?

Access to the building site is very important before work commences. The majority of loads are delivered by large Artic lorries, which are most cost effective. Beforehand, check and measure all access and turning points to be sure you can accommodate the size of delivery vehicle and avoid unnecessary charges. Your materials provider and contractor will be able to assist you with this.

Do your research

We all like to save money but, in a project like building a sand school, we must be realistic from the start and budget accordingly. It is essential to get it right from the construction to laying your chosen surface – trying to fix a bad job can be very costly and uneconomical in the long run, not to mention the possibility of causing injury to your horse. It is worth doing your research, all good companies will be happy to advise and give you a number of options to suit.

Try before you buy

Any well-established arena company will have access to a number of arenas across the country and can offer you the opportunity to visit these sites to check out the arenas beforehand. It is always beneficial to include a site visit in your research prior to buying. Some companies have their own research facilities, which you and your horse can visit, try a number of surfaces and meet with your advisor face to face to discuss your options.

Build it right

The construction of your arena is vital to its longevity. Getting advice from experienced arena manufacturers and suppliers at this stage could save you time and money in the future.

The best grade

The quality of sand varies considerably and the different grades and grain particle size do affect the performance of any arena. Equestrian grade Silica sand is essential for new builds, aiding drainage and firmness.

When choosing a surface for your arena there are many factors to consider. The number of horses that will be using it, the discipline it will be used for and budget are three of the main ones but other elements to consider include drainage, the type of ground the surface is on and whether the arena is situated indoors or outdoors. Personal preference is also an important consideration.

“Some riders like a loose mix as they want their horse to work through it, some riders prefer a firmer mix so they work on top of the surface – it totally depends on what discipline the horse is doing, or how much the arena or gallops are used,” says Nicholas Collins, general manager at Martin Collins Enterprises.

Whatever surface you choose the aim should be the same – a surface with consistent, safe footing which provides both vertical and horizontal support and allows the horse to maximise performance with the least amount of stress and strain.

“The surface should distribute shock through the arena layers and should provide enough resistance under the hoof for the horse to balance and move into the next stride,” says David Andrews, managing director at Andrews Bowen Ltd.

Silica sand, a specific sand type containing a sub-angular grain shape which provides greater stability, was traditionally very popular but nowadays is more often combined with rubber or fibre.

It is imperative the correct type of silica sand is used as the wrong one can cause the arena to become very deep and ultimately lead to it needing to be replaced. Apart from requiring to be lightly watered, silica sand is low maintenance, provides good drainage and is long lasting.

Fibre sand is a very robust and resilient surface but it does demand some maintenance. Keeping it moist will help prevent dust, while weekly harrowing will give the surface an even wear rate. The mix of shredded fibres, which often come from the carpet industry, trap moisture within the surface and stop the sand from drying out and becoming loose, which can happen in rubber sand surfaces.

Fibre sand is similar to turf footing so it rides lightly as horses will stay on top of the surface rather than going deep into it.

“The sand is the key element in any sand and fibre surface, if the sand is of poor quality the surface will never be able to perform to its optimum. Any sand and fibre surface requires irrigation to keep it structured and provide a safe footing for the horse and rider. Without this, the surface will ride deep and can cause injuries especially to the lower limbs,” says Thomas Harper, director, Equestrian Surfaces Ltd.

“Synthetic surfaces can be added to existing surfaces as ‘top-ups’ or as a complete surface directly onto a simple drainage layer, giving potentially huge cost savings on labour and sand bases,” says Becky Haydon, sales advisor at Equestrian Direct Surfaces. “Usually, a blend of industrial strength synthetic textile and polymer materials are processed to produce a surface which provides exceptional cushioning qualities as well as providing an insulating layer — preventing the surface from drying out in the summer and freezing in the winter.”

When rubber is combined with silica sand it provides a springy, cushioned surface so is good for jumping arenas. Rubber is a good insulator against frost as it’s impermeable and it also doesn’t rot down like wood fibre, meaning it is incredibly durable. However, on the downside, rubber is not biodegradable so can be difficult to dispose of and in hot weather it can give off an unpleasant smell. It can also be contaminated with foreign objects such as metal.

“Rubber surfaces are not only environmentally unfriendly, as the rubber used is not biodegradable, but they can also become dry and loose in hot weather,” says Becky. “There are a number of versatile synthetic surfaces on the market today which are ideal for most types of equestrian disciplines without the downsides of rubber.”

Other surfaces that will not freeze in the winter are those that are wax coated. The wax coating binds the ingredients together which means there is less surface movement. The coating also stops it from becoming dusty and from drying out during the summer. While these surfaces can be more expensive to install they generally require less maintenance so you save money on irrigation or watering.

“A good waxed surface will give you a consistent performing ride 365 days a year, no matter what the weather. It provides a safe footing for any discipline and can be maintained to provide different going depending on the discipline and usage,” continues Thomas Harper.

Wood chip is the most cost effective and environmentally friendly surface but if the wood is recycled be aware that it could contain old nails, screws or staples. The size of the chips is also something to consider as if they are too big they can become stuck in horses’ hooves and if they are too small they can blow around. Another negative to wood chip is that it can become slippery when it starts to decompose, depending on the quality of wood that is used, but it is dust free and easy to dispose of.

Whichever surface you choose, there are plenty of reputable companies out there who can advise on what best matches your needs and preferences. It is important to look after the surface and ensure it is maintained properly. Regularly collecting droppings to prevent contamination is just one method which will help ensure your arena stays in peak condition for as long as possible.

“It is recommended that you use the correct maintenance equipment on your surface, not only will regular maintenance keep your surface working at its optimum performance level but will also extend the longevity of your riding surface,” says Janet Finnigan, sales manager at Equestrian Surfaces Ltd.

So you’ve decided to build your own arena. To avoid the common pitfalls, we have spoken to the expects to find out how to build a riding arena and what are the key points you need to consider before taking the plunge.

1. Location

If building a riding arena will be part of a bigger equestrian project, consider the whole layout upfront.

“You don’t want to compromise on the best solution,” advises Charles Britton, who runs the 40-year-old equestrian facilities company of the same name.

“Authorities are typically not keen for facilities to sprawl over too large an area, so putting it nearer to existing facilities will always make it easier to secure support,” he says.

While hedgerows and trees can provide shelter from prevailing wind, most installers advise steering clear because of the problems created by falling leaves and roots — while planners also object to the impact on mature trees.

Soil conditions can also be a consideration.

“An arena can be built on almost any ground, but if there are difficult conditions — for example if it’s rocky or boggy — then it is going to need more investment in either equipment or materials, so if there is an alternative position, consider it,” advises Charles. “Similarly, if you can’t get at least eight-wheel tipper lorries to the site, costs will be greater for smaller lorries or re-handling of materials.”

“Don’t worry too much about earthworks,” notes Total Equestrian Construction’s Steve Keen. “People are concerned if they have a slope that it will be expensive, but usually it’s the cheapest part.”

2. Size

The most popular arena size is 40x20m, while those dedicated to dressage may opt for a 60x20m layout. For jumping arenas, extra width is recommended.

“Even 40x25m makes a difference to where you can site jumps, so I always advise people to go for the extra five metres if they can,” says Steve.

Charles Britton also suggests being clear on how the arena will be used.

“Some uses are better served by another, separate facility. If you do a lot of lungeing, the arena can potentially be harmed by intense, concentrated activity. You may be better off having a separate lungeing arena, perhaps making the main arena a bit smaller to fund it.”

3. Base and drainage

The base is unquestionably the most important aspect of an arena build. If it isn’t constructed properly, the arena surface will never perform as intended and pooling water and soft spots will result.

“When you build an arena, only the surface and the fencing should need changing when they reach the end of their life expectancy, nothing else,” says Jackson Arena’s James Alford.

Different installers have different approaches to the structure of drainage — and it is an area for the expert to advise — but don’t skimp on stone or membranes.

“The key issue is hard limestone for the drainage network. It’s clean and it keeps the drains clean,” says James.

Leisure Ride’s chief executive officer Ross Hemming agrees: “You want the stone to be as hard as possible — limestone or granite work best, and it needs to be evenly compacted.” Having a suitable top membrane is also important to prevent puncturing.

“We recommend a minimum of 300g per square metre Newton tear strength,” Ross adds.

4. Surfaces

With such a wide range on offer — and many differing opinions as to what works best — choosing a surface can be a minefield.

Should you opt for woodchip, PVC, rubber-mix or sand and fibre?

“It is the one question that everyone gets hooked up on, yet it’s just a part of the whole decision process,” says Charles. “We would always stress though, don’t compromise on the rest of the structure to install a top-price surface — it won’t work.”

For most people, the primary factors influencing surface choice are budget and the level and type of use.

If you want to get a feel for the type of ride you are looking for and what would best suit the requirements of your discipline, try to see a surface in work rather than just viewing samples.

Most people installing an outdoor arena opt for a sand-based surface, and Ross has some basic advice: “The sand is most important thing. The surface will always ride deep if it’s wrong. You need angular, high-quality silica sand, not round grains. Damp binds the angular grains together.”

“Good” going on natural turf is considered the best surface for a horse, and this is what additives to sand are trying to mimic.

“Fibres of the right consistency will emulate turf’s root structure,” Ross explains.

Sand and rubber is a popular budget surface, whereas at the other end of the spectrum there is wax.

Wax surfaces were pioneered by Martin Collins Enterprises more than 30 years ago and are designed to provide the most consistent ride — although with greater capital outlay.

“Wax makes a surface behave as though it’s wet and minimises dust. It also repels water, which makes the arena less likely to freeze,” says Martin’s son Nicholas.

“It gives you finer control to create the ride you want — a surface should have controlled movement, balancing hoof stability and support with ‘give’.”

It is wise to remember that the “perfect” surface arguably does not exist and that maintenance will always be key.

“Everybody wants a surface that you don’t have to maintain, that doesn’t freeze in winter or need watering in summer,” adds Ross. “You can’t have a very low maintenance surface without giving up something else — usually performance.”

5. Planning permission

Most arena installation companies offer a “turn key” solution that includes handling the process for you. However, if you are going it alone, it’s useful to be aware of the issues that are most likely to concern your county council. The planning permission process can take up to three months.

“For equestrian builds, it’s worth contacting your local planning authority before doing anything else. They can tell you what is more likely to be acceptable,” says Gill Davies from Martin Collins.

One of the most common areas of compromise is lighting, which can pose aesthetic considerations as well as troubling neighbours.

“When siting an arena, it’s worth considering if there is traffic passing on a nearby highway that might prevent you installing lighting,” says Charles.

Modern LED lights mounted on the fencing rather than a pole can provide a work-around.

The location of drains is also important.

“Some councils want to know where the outfall is — it may be going into a ditch adjacent to a road or impacting a neighbour’s land,” says Ross.

When building in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), aesthetic considerations can be of high importance.

“We currently have a build in Malvern where the client wanted light coloured sand but the council wanted the surface toned down,” says Ross.

“They didn’t want bright white in the middle of a green field. We managed to source sand from a different region — it was still silica sand but darker.”

6. Finishing touches

Fences

If you are installing the fencing yourself, do the job properly to ensure longevity.

“We always concrete the fencing in because if you don’t, within a couple of years it will bow out and look horrible,” explains Ross. “We also re-treat the bottom of our fence posts with bitumin before putting them in the ground.”

Ross also advises not skimping on kickboards.

“We have stone that comes under the kickboard as they are more likely to rot in contact with soil. You need a height of 13-15in of timber to prevent surface loss,” he adds.

Charles Britton cautions against pitting budget against safety.

“Fence height is important — a flimsy fence that is too low can actually be a danger. We

recommend 4ft 6in above the top of the riding surface, which is about 5ft 6in out of the ground,” he says.

Gates

If you want to practise dressage test riding, a central entrance on a kickboard arena might be the option for you. Otherwise, Ross advises that gates are best located offset or in the middle of a long side.

“We will never put a gate on the centre line. If a gate is left open, a naughty horse on the centre line will be out of the gate and gone. We also try not to put them in a corner for the same reason,” he says.

Mirrors

Universal advice for installing mirrors is that in order to avoid glare, you should check the direction of the sun at the time of day when you are most likely to be riding.

They should be angled towards the ground and attached to a framework rather than directly to fencing.

7. The cost

Unsurprisingly a number of factors will impact the cost, but as an example, Jackson Arenas quotes £19,500 plus VAT for a “budget” arena.

Most arena installation companies strongly caution against cutting corners, as many lower-cost fixes will only shorten the lifespan of the arena or take additional expense to remedy later on.

For those on a tight budget, there are some areas where you might make savings.

“Cut your size, not your budget,” suggests Charles.

“If you want a big arena but can’t afford it yet, and it is a site requiring cut and fill, have it levelled ready for a big arena and extend later.”

James Alford believes some savings can be made on the finishing details.

“The only place where you can really save money is fencing,” he says. “Sometimes it’s an option to use round machine posts, which are quicker to put in. A fence isn’t essential — you could just have kickboards.”

While it is better to install your chosen arena surface from the beginning — as taking up and replacing a surface results in added costs later on — if you are building on a budget, having a long-term plan to upgrade is a possibility.

“It might be worth putting up with a surface that isn’t your first choice for a couple of years,” advises Ross. “If you buy good quality angular silica sand to begin with, surfaces can be improved with the right fibre.”

The Environment Agency (EA) is cracking down on “toxic” plastic waste being used in equestrian arena surfaces.

The EA is warning riders of the dangers they could be putting themselves, their horses and the environment in by using inappropriate materials.

People found with the substance on their land could face an expensive bill for its removal and disposal and could even be liable for prosecution.

“Plastic granulate, derived from the recycling of cable sheathing and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and sold as an alternative surface for equestrian centres, could place horses and riders at risk, present a pollution hazard and lead to owners falling foul of the law,” said a statement from the EA.

“Plastic granulate is a waste material derived from the recycling of cable sheathing and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

“It’s being marketed by some waste producers and brokers as a base material for horse maneges and track surfaces. However, there is no legal route available for its use for this purpose except in accordance with an environmental permit.

“This granulate is being sold to be used as a cheap replacement for clean plastic granules derived as a by-product from plastics manufacture or granules specifically produced for horse maneges.”

The permit mentioned by the EA spokesman is only applicable for licensed waste disposal facilities and could not be applied to allow the use of this material in equestrian arenas.

The statement added the plastics present can contain persistent organic pollutants, phthalates and lead stearate.

“Weathering can cause leaching of these toxic substances into the wider environment, potentially causing contamination to land and groundwater,” said the statement.

“Some plastic granulate may even be cross-contaminated with non-plastic elements such as metal fragments and glass, making surfaces where it’s used potentially harmful for horses and riders.”

Certain waste materials, such as granulated rubber and wood chip, can be used in quantities up to 1,000 tonnes for horse maneges under a U8 waste exemption registration. But no such exemption is available for granulated plastic to be used as equestrian arena surfaces.

British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) director Claire Williams told H&H the organisation “welcomes this crackdown on the use of potentially hazardous material”.

“Reliable companies – including BETA members — always check the provenance of their materials and would never use this in their products,” she said.

“Those seeking to produce cheap alternative surfacing must be made aware of the implications if they do not understand them, and those that are seeking to make a fast buck and have no consideration for the harm they might cause should be prevented from doing so.”

The EA is urging anyone who is approached and offered this material, but who doesn’t have an appropriate environmental permit, to contact the agency on 03708 506 506 or enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk. This is because producers and brokers of plastic granulate have a legal duty of care to ensure it is disposed of at a permitted facility.

“We’re determined to eliminate avoidable waste and crack down on plastics as part of the government’s 25-year environmental plan,” said EA officer Greg Deakin.

“We’re therefore urging those with equestrian facilities to carefully consider the use of this material.

“It might be offered free of charge or for a small delivery fee, but it is an offence under the environmental permitting regulations to use this waste without appropriate environmental controls.

“If you’re found to have plastic granulate waste deposited on your land without the appropriate environmental permit awarded by the Environment Agency, you could be fined and be liable for the cost of its disposal.”

Deposits of this waste can be reported, anonymously, on the EA’s 24-hour national incident hotline, on 0800 80 70 60.

Riders at this summer’s Royal Highland Show are to benefit from an “Olympic-standard” surface in a new upgraded ring.

Organisers, the Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS) has confirmed a £500,000 investment to upgrade its equestrian ring —ring 6 — to Olympic standard in time for this year’s show in June (18-21).

Around 3,000 horses take part at the Royal Highland Show, held at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh, and organisers hope the investment will attract “the finest riders” to the show.

The all-weather arena and Equaflow water capture system, supplied by Andrews Bowen, aims to provide a “quality jumping surface whatever the weather”.

The surface will use a similar “crate” drainage system to that used at Greenwich for London 2012 and that racehorse trainer Dan Skelton has at his Warwickshire yard.

Work will take around six weeks

At the show, showjumping classes including the International Stairway, grade C, Foxhunter and grade A and B class will all take place in the ring as well as all the working hunters and the Retraining of Racehorse classes.

“The investment in a new all-weather surface will enhance the show’s reputation in the eyes of equestrian exhibitors, visitors and trade stand holders alike,” said RHASS director and RHS showjumping chief steward, Anne Logan.

“It will provide a wonderful facility for all equestrian disciplines in Scotland, but most importantly, it will ensure that the Royal Highland Show remains at the very forefront of top end county showjumping for years to come.“

The show’s course designer, Mark McGowan, said it was “fantastic news”.

“RHASS’ forward-thinking ensures that horses from every discipline are guaranteed the best footing from start to finish, not only for the 2015 show, but for many years to come,” he said.

RHASS chairman, Willie Gill, said: “This decision to install such a state-of-the-art jumping surface is a reflection of the Society’s support of equestrianism in Scotland.

“Our motivation is clear: to protect the reputation and sustainability of Scotland’s premier equine event and showcase the finest riding talent, many of whom are homegrown.”

The new ring will also be used for the Scottish Foxhunter second round at the Scottish Summer Extravaganza Show (17-19 July) and the Scottish Horse Show (21 July).

It will also be available to hire for other events.

How do surfaces affect movement, performance and joint health? For guest editor Nick Skelton, Dr Elizabeth Barr discusses the latest thinking on the impact of conditions underfoot

Nick says: “Our showjumping horses train and compete on a variety of artificial and grass surfaces. While we can control what they work on at home, we have to take what we find at shows — where the quality of the footing can mean the difference between a win and a disappointing round.

“As riders we get a certain feel for ‘good’ going, but I often wonder about the short- and long-term implications of performing on surfaces that are less than ideal. A lot of riders are confused about what’s best for jumping. I’d love to know if this is an issue for other disciplines, too.”

The footing a horse works on will affect not only how he performs on a given day, but also his chances of staying sound throughout his competitive career. Much has been discussed regarding different surfaces and the implications for injury.

But most veterinary research has been targeted towards the effect surfaces have on injury in thoroughbred racehorses. Transferring this research to sport horses is unlikely to be accurate, given the varying demands placed upon the joints of horses competing in the different disciplines.

Additionally, it’s possible to argue that, even within the sport horse world, different surface characteristics are desirable for different disciplines.

Measuring the impact

So what do we know about how surfaces affect sport horses? To evaluate the effect of a surface, we need a way of measuring gait. Various methods have been used for this, with the two main branches being kinematics and kinetics.

Kinematics studies motion via a system of movement sensors and cameras. Kinetics, on the other hand, measures the forces applied by the hoof on the surface as the horse moves (known as ground reaction forces, or GRFs).

Different kinetic methods are available, the most commonly used being force plates or pressure-measuring pads. These are generally set into the ground and therefore not practical for use in testing of surfaces. Special horseshoes have been developed to measure the loads on a foot on different surfaces.

This technology could be used to evaluate training surfaces, but has limitations in terms of expense and availability of equipment. Also, the complexity and weight of some of these systems may mean that a horse wearing such a shoe will not move normally, thus affecting results.

The ideal surface

It doesn’t take a scientist to work out that a hard surface will “jar” the horse on landing and that a horse will find it hard work to jump out of a very deep surface.

But the reasons behind this are a little more technical. The force patterns that are applied to the foot and limb during every stride are complex. A hard surface will generate a large concussive force on impact as the hoof decelerates rapidly.

On a soft surface, the deceleration occurs over a longer time period, which reduces the peak impact and concussive force. But too soft a cushion — that is, a deep surface — will continue to collapse as the horse tries to push off, either at the start of the stride or, in the case of a jumping horse, on take-off. The result is a loss of forward momentum and speed, with an increase in energy expenditure and more rapid fatigue. This may cause injury.

How quickly the foot is brought to a halt will also depend on the characteristics of the surface. So the ideal surface should provide cushioning and some slide on initial impact.

Once loaded by the weight of the horse, however, this surface should also provide adequate carrying capacity and resistance in order to support the hoof during propulsion. Where a surface absorbs too much energy and does not return energy to the limb in rebound, it may be described as being “dead” by the rider.

Reducing lameness

There is some data for showjumpers regarding the effect of surface on kinetics of landing.

One paper from a group at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences attempted to show differences between turf and a sand arena.

Results were complicated by the fact that effects could not be shown to be associated with the surface only. Other factors had to be taken into account, such as differences in fore, hind, trailing and leading limbs, an effect of fence type and the interaction between studs and the turf.

In comparison to the sparse information regarding arena surfaces and showjumpers, researchers at the Animal Health Trust have performed various studies into arena surface type and lameness in dressage horses.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was found that lameness was increased by training on surfaces that were patchy and uneven. Lameness was reduced where surfaces remained uniform. The original study also showed that tripping and losing balance were associated with increased risk of lameness.

The same authors undertook a subsequent study to look at the association between different surfaces and these detrimental surface properties. It was found that wax-coated and sand and rubber surfaces were associated with less tripping and slipping compared with sand, sand and PVC, woodchips or grass.

Of the surfaces, woodchips were most strongly associated with slipping and sand surfaces were most strongly associated with tripping. The study also showed that any arena surface should have a base, with limestone being recommended and crushed concrete being best avoided.

Good arena maintenance was also shown to be essential, especially with the increasing numbers of horses using an arena in any one day. The importance of surface maintenance has been further underlined by studies in thoroughbred racehorses.

Additionally, it has been shown that rough, deformable surfaces result in variable forces and variable load in the hoof, which predisposes to injury. In a recent study performed at the University of Central Lancashire, harrowing and rolling were compared on one particular surface. It was found that small alterations in the surface cushion appeared to be able to produce subtle changes in stride characteristics.

With greater knowledge, enforced time out of competition and potentially career-ending injuries may be reduced and avoided.

Which injury — and why?

Particular causes of lameness have been shown to be more common in particular disciplines.

Eventers, showjumpers and National Hunt racehorses, for example, are at high risk of superficial digital flexor tendon injury. Dressage horses are prone to hindlimb suspensory ligament injury, while Flat racehorses tend to incur carpal (knee) injuries.

Although we know that equine orthopaedic injuries are dependent upon a number of factors, currently we do not know which injuries are associated with a particular surface — or if, indeed, this association does actually exist. It is likely that injury predilection sites occur as a result of the demands of the sport itself.

Whether the different surfaces used in the disciplines have an effect, however, is worthy of further research.

How limbs absorb impact

1. When the hoof impacts the ground, it hits vertically and decelerates rapidly. This shock of impact is dampened predominantly by the soft tissues of the hoof and is assisted by the ground surface, if the surface is soft.

2. Although the hoof has stopped, the body of the horse is still moving forward, essentially colliding with its own stationary leg. As the body pushes the leg forward, this forces the hoof to slide and then stop.

3. When it stops, the hoof pushes into the ground and the ground exerts an equal and opposite force (the GRF). This force is transferred up the leg and dissipated by the horse’s musculoskeletal system.

4. During the next phase of the stride (the support phase), the limb accelerates the body upward. The forces on the limb are at their maximum at mid-stance — the point where the limb is directly over the stationary foot — and after this the forces change from braking to propulsion. Appropriate traction between the shoe and surface is critical at mid-stance.

5. The last phase of the stride is the rollover, at which point the foot is unloaded.

Australia’s first “Polytrack” surface to work racehorses on — designed by Berkshire-based company Martin Collins — opened earlier this month.

The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) announced the launch of the $2.8m (£1.9m) synthetic surface at its Caulfield centre, on 8 February.

“Polytrack differs greatly from the synthetic tracks previously laid in Australia through its composition and drainage system, making it the first actual ‘all-weather’ turf-mimicking surface,” said the MRC’s Mike Symons.

Martin Collins added: “We are delighted to be working with the Melbourne Racing Club at Caulfield in the latest development of their fabulous training facilities.”

Polytrack surfaces have been installed on 17 racetracks across the world, including Newmarket in the UK. The surface can also be found on over 210km of training gallops worldwide.

Buyers have scooped up all 10,000tonne of Lingfield Park racecourse’s old Polytrack all-weather surface.

The 11-year-old used surface, at £40 a tonne, sold out in only a few weeks. It was snapped up by 25 private buyers, mostly from the racing industry.

The original Lingfield Polytrack served 11 full winter seasons, but Arena Racing Company, which owns Lingfield, found there was a keen second-hand market.

Buyers included trainers Mark Johnston, Marco Botti, Bob Champion and Fontwell racecourse, with about 300tonne donated to The Horse Trust at Princes Risborough.

Jockey Club Estates bought 750tonne for the public gallops on Newmarket Heath.

Training grounds manager Nick Patton said it will be used at the start of the existing Polytrack gallops, which usually need replacing every 18 months due to soiling from horses waiting to canter.

In 2001, Lingfield was the

[[ strong.first racecourse to install the waxed surface ]] . It is now used at 17 other tracks around the world.

Martin Collins, who invented the surface, told H&H: “In 2001 it was unknown territory; I suggested to Lingfield that it might need replacing after six years — yet it went on to service 11 seasons of racing several times a week, and with minimal maintenance,” he added.

Racing on Lingfield’s new Polytrack started on 17 October and the surface was well received by jockeys.

The arena surface at Greenwich has been given the thumbs-up by International Equestrian Federation (FEI) this morning.

Sports director for the organisers, LOCOG, Debbie Jevans said: “With support from the FEI, the contractors and our own team have done a great job to get the make-up of the surface right, and we now believe this will be a world class surface for the equestrian athletes in a stunning Olympic venue.”

The surface for the test event last summer caused some complaints from riders, with showjumpers describing it as “puddingy”.

The specification of the surface was changed and an assessment recently took place on the main arena, involving two high-level competition horses that worked on the surface and jumped fences.

LOCOG said the surface, a mixture of sand and fibre, has been further improved by the addition of a binder.

Approximately 8500 tonnes of surface will be used at Greenwich Park.

Lars Roepstorff, professor in equine functional anatomy at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, has also assessed the surface.

Mr Roepstorff is carrying out research on the properties of equestrian surfaces around the world as part of a long-term scientific footing study for the FEI.

He measured properties including surface firmness, elasticity and the dampening capacity of the footing and grip.

He considers the London 2012 footing to be among the best and particularly the most consistent that he has worked on, a view supported by attending FEI representatives.

FEI secretary-general Ingmar De Vos, who was also present at the assessment, said: “It is the first time that there has been such a scientific approach to footing and hopefully this will be part of the long-term legacy.

“It helps us to determine the parameters that can be used in the future to establish scientifically approved criteria for optimal footing.”

He said the cross-country course is also unaffected by the recent wet weather.

The arena surface to be used for the equestrian Olympic events has finally been approved – after two rounds of additional testing following criticism.

At the official test event in Greenwich Park showjumpers complained that the surface was “pudding-like”, “tacky” and “dense” (news, 14 July 2011).

And last year H&H reported showjumpers still found the surface “too heavy” after more tests in Birmingham in October.

The mix, which is supplied by Andrews Bowen, is composed of non-waxed sand, felt and fibre. Around 8,000 tons of surface are required for the arena and warm-up areas.

The final tests took place near Preston last month (20-21 December). And the FEI finally signed-off the surface last week.

Showjumper Geoff Billington and H&H dressage columnist Richard Davison tested the surface.

International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC) representative John Whitaker and fellow showjumpers Peter Murphy and David McPherson were also there but not jumping.

A spokesman for Olympic organisers LOCOG added: “The IJRC was given the opportunity for John to ride on the surface but were happy he watched.”

The FEI’s Ingmar de Vos said: “The riders gave some very positive feedback and this was backed up by the technical reports from the officials.”

Showjumpers are still not happy with the surface to be used at the 2012 Olympics after a second round of tests suggested the going was still “too heavy”.

Olympic organiser LOCOG confirmed work will be done before the surface is tested for a third time later this year, at a private venue. It will be again tested on a raised platform to replicate the Games conditions.

At the official Olympic test event in Greenwich Park in July showjumpers complained that the surface was “heavy” and “pudding-like” (news, 15 July).

And at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) last month the surface was tested again, this time by eight top showjumpers – who LOCOG declined to name – where the feedback was similar.

The surface, provided by Andrews Bowen, was tested the day after competition at HOYS – and was a “slightly deeper” surface than the one used throughout the show. A spokesman for HOYS said they had been happy with its surface.

A spokesman for LOCOG said: “Further work was requested to look at the composition of the surface. We have listened to this feedback and will continue to work with the FEI and representatives of the international riders’ clubs to achieve the best possible solution for 2012.”

Around 8,000 tons of surface are required for the arena and warm-up areas at Greenwich next year.

At the test event in July top rider Laura Kraut described the ground as a “little bit tacky and heavy” but added: “I don’t think this will be the final product.”

Nick Skelton said: “It is heavy and dead to ride on, but if this isn’t the ground we’re jumping on next year, why are we here? I’d like to see horses move across it more easily.”

William Funnell said jumping 1.45m felt like 1.55m. But rider David O’Brien said: “It felt solid and secure to me.”

Contrary to speculation, LOCOG said it is not currently looking for a new supplier.

John Roche, FEI’s jumping director, said: “We have full confidence in LOCOG’s ability to produce optimal footing for London 2012.”

Andrews Bowen declined to comment.

British producer of equestrian surfaces Andrews Bowen has supplied its ProWax surface to the Al Shaqab Equestrian Facility in Doha, Qatar, for their indoor and outdoor stadiums.

British equestrian surfaces manufacturer Martin Collins International will provide the footing for the FEI World Cup Finals at Leipzig (27 April-1 May).

The competition is the first time four equestrian World Cup finals — showjumping, dressage, driving and vaulting — will be staged at the same event.

It is the second time in two years that MCI has provided the footing for a major FEI championship, having surfaced Windsor, UK, for the dual show jumping and dressage European Championships in 2009.

And EN GARDE Marketing GmbH, the organisers of the World Cup event, have used MC Ecotrack at Hamburg Horse Show.

Managing director Volker Wulff said: “Following our good experiences in Hamburg, as well as conversations with top competitors from different disciplines, it was a logical decision to choose Martin Collins for the FEI World Cup Finals.

An event of the very highest level will only be successful if each individual product used will meet the highest requirements.”

Equestrian surface manufacturer Softrack Surfaces is under new ownership.

Hugh Daly, who owns Oxfordshire-based building company Equibuild, took over the company in September, from founder Robert Brazil.

He says the first three weeks of business have yielded orders for 3,000 tonnes of Softrack Surfaces.

“Softrack is still in business and should be your first port of call if you have one of the company’s surfaces,” said Mr Daly.

He said previous problems, which led to surfaces failing, had been resolved.

Hickstead’s International Arena is to undergo improvement work this summer.

The venue has appointed turfgrass experts Sports Turf Research to monitor the arena over the next two months to measure factors including hardness, traction, drainage, grass cover and hoof penetration.

Last year the venue was criticised when the footing failed to hold up after severe weather conditions.

All drainage and irrigation systems will be updated and the new turf will be grown from seed, to improve strength and durability.

The first low-maintenance, synthetic racetrack has been opened in Australia, to the delight of owners and trainers Down Under.

The Cushion Track surface was unveiled at Corbould Park Racecourse on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland on 6 April.

The synthetic track, made of silica sand, rubber, fibres and wax, was built to replace the original sand track at Corbould and manufactured by British-based firm Equestrian Surfaces International Ltd.

Nearly 3,500 people attended the first meeting under the new surface and reports from jockeys and trainers were positive.

Leading Sunshine Coast jockey Ken Pope rode a number of horses on the track and said: “The track was consistent the entire way round.”

Caloundra premier trainer Trevor Miller also echoed the praise for the track.

“It will enable us access to a premier training and racing surface no matter what the weather conditions”, he said.

The AUS$6million project required 9,000 tonnes of Cushion Track surface and seven months to complete.

It is the first low-maintenance surface in Australia and allows vertical drainage. The wax element ensures binding and eliminates kick back so that watering and maintenance are reduced.

Queensland Racing Ltd chairman Bob Bentley said Cushion Track was chosen primarily for the reduced maintenance it requires in comparison to non-synthetic surfaces.

With the shortage of water in Australia becoming an increasing problem, unlimited water supplies required to maintain turf is not an option. The State Government invested $4million into the new surface as it will save water and because racing is a huge contributor to the economy in Queensland.
