‘This is the best grazing muzzle I’ve tried – I wish I’d had one years ago’

I’ve been putting the new LeMieux Noma Grazing Muzzle to the test. In short, I would say this muzzle is the best grazing muzzle I’ve tried, but I’ve detailed my thoughts below and included some pictures and videos so that you can see it in action.

First impressions

This muzzle is different to all the other grazing muzzles on the market – it’s flexible, lightweight and has a soft feel.

It can be attached to any headcollar, which is great because you’re more likely to keep it on than you are a single-strap muzzle. It also means don’t have to purchase an additional headcollar, which helps to keep the cost down. I’d recommend using one of the best field-safe headcollars, and I tried it with the LeMieux Breakaway Headcollar.

My first impressions were really positive – finding a grazing muzzle that works for your horse can be really tricky and giving them all a try is an expensive hobby, but this looked like it was going to solve some of the problems I’d had previously.

My test subjects

I tried the muzzle on my pony, a 13.3hh Norwegian Fjord, who has worn a muzzle before but not recently. I’ve tried a selection in the past and had most success with the Shires Green Guard muzzle, but it did rub him on his chin and after storing the muzzle in a box with other kit over the winter, it had become squashed and misshapen, which caused it to rub even more.

I also tested it on a 13.2hh Welsh section C who wears a muzzle every day, but prior to testing this one had three different styles on rotation to get around problems with rubbing. She has been wearing this muzzle regularly for the last few months.

With different head shapes, I expected the muzzle to fit the Fjord slightly better, but I knew the section C would give it her best shot at removal, which would be an important part of the test.

How well the LeMieux Noma Grazing Muzzle worked

The main things to consider with a grazing muzzle are:

Does it stay on or is it easy for your horse to remove?
Does it reduce intake while allowing your horse to graze, drink and breathe comfortably?
Does it rub?

Did the ponies keep the muzzle on?

Neither pony managed to remove the muzzle in the time that they wore it. Being attached to a regular headcollar meant it could be fitted securely, and the nylon pips (which attach the muzzle to the headcollar) were strong enough to hold it on during rolling and rubbing, but are designed to ping off if your horse was caught.

Neither of the ponies showed signs of discomfort while wearing the muzzle.

Could the ponies graze easily?

I’ve videoed the Fjord’s first attempt at grazing with the muzzle on, which is the first time he’s worn a muzzle in four or five years, and you can see he had no problem eating.

The section C also had no troubles, and I’ve videoed her eating hay from the ground. You can see she is able to eat hay via the hexagonal holes in addition to the small grazing hole, but I’ve mentioned more about this in the fit section.

It definitely reduces the intake – unfortunately I can’t say by exactly how much, but studies suggest muzzles in general reduce intake by around 80% – and it seemed to be an instrumental part of the section C successfully losing weight.

The grazing hole is just over 3.5cm wide, and the pentagonal and hexagonal breathing holes are 4–5cm at their widest points. Aside from the main grazing hole, the other sections below the mouth are covered.

Does it rub?

Neither pony suffered rubbing while wearing this muzzle. I’ve tried a few types of muzzle and this is the first time I’ve managed to use one without a single rub.

Prior to using this muzzle, the section C had three on rotation due to all rubbing different areas.

It has a fleecy tab on the attachment that sits over the nose to prevent rubbing in this area. The muzzle itself is made of soft and flexible rubber, which reduced the chance of rubbing.

Fit and sizing

Unfortunately, the Noma is only available in pony and cob sizes currently – I really hope LeMieux will introduce more sizes in the future.

I used a cob-sized muzzle on both the ponies. The Welsh section C may have fitted a pony size better as she was able to graze via the breathing holes on occasion, but the extra space seemed to keep her more comfortable and her intake was still reduced, so it remained a good option for us.

Care and durability

The muzzle is easy to clean – I just rinsed it under the hose and rubbed any dirt away with my fingers.

It has lasted well. It’s only been worn for a few months so far, but I spent a lot of time in the beginning adjusting the fit (undoing and doing up the tabs) and we’ve had no breakages.

Verdict

With an RRP of £39.95, I think this muzzle is a great value buy. It did job and keeps your horse comfortable, so it ticks all the boxes for me. I wish I’d had it years ago when the Fjord needed to wear one every day.

Unlike the typical bucket-style grazing muzzles, the ThinLine Flexible Filly Grazing Muzzle has been developed with horse owner feedback and so features in our guide to the best grazing muzzles.

It is designed to help slow down speedy eaters, limiting grazing, and can also be used to help curb minor cribbing problems. It’s made of a durable and pliable mould-resistant material that is soft on the teeth and lips, is UV resistant and an adjustable grazing hole size.

My first impressions of the Thinline Flexible Filly

With my past unsuccessful experiences of traditional grazing muzzles, I was looking forward to testing this one with its unique design and materials. I had expected a more rigid plastic construction, but as it’s name suggests it is actually quite flexible.

It has eight attachment points that are connected to the headcollar with cable ties – I found the initial fitting fiddly to begin with, but the fit is very important to prevent your horse eating out the side. Once it’s fitted to a field-safe headcollar, however, that’s it ready to go.

This is the only muzzle my horse has not walked away from when I’ve gone to put it on.

Test Horse

This muzzle was tested on Sekonda – a 17.2hh Irish Draught with a chunky head – and he wears an extra-full size headcollar. Sekonda has worn a muzzle previously, but due to it rubbing under his chin we had to stop. While testing this muzzle, he has been wearing it everyday for 8–10 hours.

Fit

I tried the Thinline Flexible Filly grazing muzzle in a large size with a 3.5cm grazing hole. Unfortunately the ThinLine Flexible Field Safe headcollar, which is recommended to be paired with this muzzle due to the strategically placed keepers for easy attachment, was too small, so I paired the muzzle with a leather headcollar instead.

The initial fitting was fiddly – the muzzle comes with a set a paper ties so you can temporally get the correct fit before attaching the plastic cable ties. I would suggest having a few spare plastic ones at the stables incase replacements are needed. Overall, I am happy with the fit and like how you can see the horse eating clearly when they’re wearing it.

I have noticed Sekonda is not fussing when I go to put this grazing muzzle on as he has previously been with others, which suggests to me that he’s happy and comfortable when wearing it. He drinks from the trough as normal and it enables him to live out with his herd.

Performance

Using the muzzle since last year regularly along with consistent exercise I have managed to keep the weight off Sekonda. The open sides prevent the build up of dirt in the bottom, which I have struggled with in the past.

He has a pale-skinned nose but he did not suffer from sunburn when using the muzzle in combination with one of the best suncreams for horses. He has been trying to rub it on his front legs, but it hasn’t come off.

What really stands out for me is the comfort. After regular wear, there have been no signs of rubbing, which we have struggled with when using the bucket style all-in-one muzzles.

The durability has also been good. Despite daily use last summer, it’s showing minimal signs of wear. It’s easy to clean but it’s worth knowing that the material doesn’t stay clear.

It states its machine washable in a net bag on cold wash with detergent and a teaspoon of bleach. I have not done this as I would need to remove it from the leather headcollar and then refit all the cable ties after. I have just been washing it off as and when needed.

Overall I’d highly recommend the Thinline grazing muzzle, especially if you are struggling to find a good fit without any rubbing.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – This reliable, well-designed muzzle has improved my horse’s quality of life. By enabling him to wear it comfortably and regularly, he can happily remain in the field with his herd while his weight is effectively managed. It’s the only one I’ve found big enough to fit my horse’s large head, while offering plenty of ventilation. It’s really worth the initial investment.

The Original Muck Boot Company Women’s Adjustable Chore Tall Boots

The Chore adjustable wellies are handcrafted from natural rubber, also they’re the redesigned iconic Muck Boot Chore for women, with the addition of a fully waterproof adjustable gusset at the back that extends up to 7cm for extra room around the calf and a more customised fit. These neoprene wellies are the chunkiest wellies I’ve tested.

They have chunky soles for excellent grip, and because of the form-fitting interior, they don’t slop about at all on the feet. They’re also breathable while staying warm, and due to the wide calf fit and neoprene upper they are easy to get on and off even with waterproof trousers on without your socks being left behind.

The Chore boots did come up slightly shorter than standard wellies, but this didn’t affect the performance of these boots. These boots have been worn around the stables and on daily dog walks, and I’ve found them comfortable. Even with the chunkier looking exterior they are lighter than they look. The reinforced toe and heel area also offer additional support in key areas. The 5mm neoprene upper kept me warm even though the temperature dropped to below 0°C.

Muck Boot Women’s Chore adjustable tall boots are available in sizes UK3–9 (not including half sizes) and in one calf width, however the adjustable gusset allows for up to 7cm of extra room. I am a size UK5, but the advice online is that they run small so you may need to size up, so I tested a UK6. I found them to be a great fit with room for a thicker sock if needed.

The adjustable calf fit offered plenty of room for added layers with ease. My mum who is a size UK6 also regularly wore these wellies for yard chores and gardening as she normally struggles to find wellies to comfortably fit her calves, but had no trouble with these.

They look industrial, so don’t win points on style for the most part unlike some of the more fashionable brands, but if you’re after a daily work boot then that doesn’t matter.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* These adjustable wellies are good value with a neoprene upper for added warmth. They are not as stylish as some other brands but have been proven to be a ‘workhorse’ welly that is built to last.

Harry Hall Mud Boot Neoprene Wellies

These Mud Boots from Harry Hall are one of the cheapest pairs of wellies I have been testing lately. But don’t be fooled into thinking the lower price tag means they lack in quality – I have been really impressed. They’re not too heavy or bulky, and so far, have kept the water out and my feet toasty and warm.

The entire upper section is made of 5mm neoprene rather than rubber, so it’s fabulously warm and flexible, making it a better fit for a variety of leg shapes, but still has enough rigidity and a back pull tab to make sliding your feet in and out easy. They come up slightly shorter than standard wellies, but unless you’re planning on going through deep water regularly, these neoprene wellies should cope just fine.

In terms of comfort, these score pretty highly, with a bouncy sole, they are very comfortable and easy to wear for long periods of time. They have a trainer-like feel and they are supportive. The sole has proven to offer stability when walking through the slippery mud in the fields.

The Harry Hall Mud Boots are available in sizes UK3–8 (not including half sizes), and are available in one standard calf width. I am a size UK5 and I found them to be true to size. The calf fit was good, which is lucky as they are not adjustable, but they do allow for some give due to the neoprene upper.

The size chart says the approx calf size for a UK5 is 38.4cm and my calves measure 38cm at the widest part and they offered a comfortable fit. The closeness of the calf fit also helped keep the warmth in.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* These boots are excellent value for money. They are very comfortable and not too tight on the legs, plus they have performed well at keeping my feet warm and dry. The Mud Boots are a great buy and I would say they give similar-looking but higher priced neoprene wellies a run for their money.

Le Chameau Chasseur neoprene-lined wellington boots

The Le Chameau Chasseur is one of the most expensive wellies I’ve ever tested. Le Chameau is a well trusted brand within the agricultural and equestrian industries and was the first to use a neoprene lining and vulcanised natural rubber, which is said to be softer and more durable than alternatives.

Although these boots are definitely workhorses, my first impression was that they are pretty smart, too. The shaft does lack structure similar to the Le Chameau Vierzonords (but this is great if you value the flexibility), and having the full-length waterproof side zip really helped getting them on and off.

The full-length zip is a feature I never knew I needed on a pair of wellies – it was perfect for tucking in waterproof trousers or baggy leg wear without the uncomfortable bunched up effect in your boot leg.

These Le Chameau boots are available in sizes UK2½–9 in ladies (UK6–15 in mens) with three width options making them the ideal boot if you have a wider calf. I am a size UK5 and I found this size to be a great fit. I wouldn’t be able to wear a thicker sock with them as they were a bit tight around my foot – but with the neoprene lining I wouldn’t need to.

My calves measure 38cm at the widest part and I tested the 40cm option as I prefect a looser feel and like to have enough room to tuck my waterproof trousers in my boots comfortably. This width was great at accommodating my needs.

These are seriously technically boots, however I just didn’t get the same comfort feel from the footbed like I do when wearing my favourite Aigle wellies. I have put these boots to the test with daily horse care and dog walking and even some gardening – they have proven to be durable and completely waterproof. The 3mm neoprene lining has kept my feet warm white wearing normal socks.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* If budget allows and you are looking for a Le Chameau wellington with more structure to the shaft, you’ve got wide calves or want room to tuck in your waterproofs, these are your best bet. They should have plenty of life in them for years, and the neoprene lining keeps you toasty.

Aigle Parcours 2 Iso Wellingtons Boots

I have been testing products over the last 10 years and I am yet to find a welly more comfortable than Aigle – to me, they are like walking on clouds and I know H&H deputy website editor Georgia Guerin spends a lot of time telling people how much she loves her pair, too. I should start this review by saying that although we get sent a lot of products to test, I bought this pair myself five years ago and I was unable to get hold of Aigle to get an official pair on test to review. However, I rate these wellies so much that I feel I would be doing H&H readers a disservice not to tell you how much I love them.

Aigle are widely considered to have designed some of the best wellington boots when you’re talking about comfort and durability and they are well known for their anti-fatiguing features. All Aigle boots are handmade in France. The company owns the only natural rubber boot manufacturing factory in France, which is in line with their commitments to sustainable and responsible fashion.

I like having a sturdy boot without it being too heavy and feel restricted. Due to the shaft being more structured (due to neoprene lining) than some of the other popular premium brands (for example, Le Chameau wellies) it make them easier to put on and take off.

From the moment I put these on I’ve never looked back. I am able to wear these boots in sub-zero temperatures while only wearing normal socks without my feet feeling cold.

The quality of these natural rubber boots feels fantastic and I am confident that even after five years of heavy use they will keep my feet warm and dry for years to come. The sole has offered excellent grip, allowing me to push the wheelbarrow through muddy, slippery gateways with ease. I have also been submerged in deep water due to an extra high tide near my horses field and they kept me dry.

The Parcours 2 Iso is available in sizes UK3½–14½ – they come in one calf width (but are adjustable) and half sizes are available. I am a UK5 and I find these wellies in a UK5 to be a perfect fit. I did notice on their website it states that they run small so it would be best to try before you buy to make sure you get the best fit for you.

The adjustable side gusset does have an element of adjustability, it allows me to customise the fit to my calf depending on how many layers I have on. I believe it would accommodate for most leg sizes that are not too far from average. My calves measure 39cm at the widest point with riding tights and long socks on and I’ve never struggled with the fit. Georgia has worn hers comfortably with waterproof riding trousers tucked in and, for context, wears wide fit Ariat Heritage long boots.

This pair of premium wellies allows me to be out all day, be it with the horses, walking the dogs, chasing my toddler around or going to the pub without feeling any fatigue on my feet. The only negative I have to say is the neoprene lining makes me too hot so I am not able to wear it in warmer temperatures, but you can get a non-insulated version if you’d prefer.

Verdict

Yes the Aigle Parcours 2 Iso are expensive, but they’re a technical, stylish welly that is built to last with unrivalled comfort. I can confirm that these wellies are superb and fit for purpose. You can tell they’ve been well worn, but for five years of heavy use they look brilliant – and I’m confident I’ll get many more years’ use out of them. I’ve rated them 10/10 in all aspects, and as far back as I can remember, we’ve not rated anything quite so high!

Toggi Barnsdale Wellington Boots H&H Approved

Toggi Barnsdale Wellington Boots

The Barnsdale are unisex handmade rubber wellies with a 4mm neoprene lining, and they feature a real leather strap and fine piping. My first impressions of these wellington boots were that they looked smart with a similar look to the now discontinued Ariat Burfords. The expandable back gusset allows for a more tailored fit – suitable for a slim, regular or wide calf, this was great for when I needed a bit of extra room for my trousers and I found them quick and easy to adjust.

The Toggi Barnsdale wellington boots are available in sizes EU37–48. I am a size UK5 and tested the EU38, but after a few wears I realised my feet were slipping about because they were too big and I was getting blisters, so I had to wear them with thicker socks and felt more secure in the foot.

I asked my mum to try them (as she’s a UK6) and she found them to be a comfortable fit when wearing regular socks and had no issues with rubbing. She found them easy to slip on and off, and comfortable when looking after the horses and walking. She also noted they were not as tall as her Ariat Burford wellies she usually wears daily. I think if these boots came in half sizes I would have been able to get a better fit.

The tread has been great and prevented sliding when pushing up the wheelbarrow at the muck heap and walking out into the muddy fields with the horses.

These are smart wellies, which offer some added warmth with the 4mm neoprene lining, however I did not find them as warm as some of the others I tested, but also meant they could be worn on sunnier days, too.

These boots allow for plenty of adjustment around the calves making them ideal for a range of calf sizes. The leather strap and piping offers a higher end finish without the price tag. If you’re after smart adjustable wellingtons for a less eye-watering price than some of its rival brands, then the Barnsdales could be a good bet for you.

Verdict

H&H Approved – Smart looking wellies with a reliable tread and warm neoprene lining that would not look out of place away from the stables.

Who tested the Toggi Barnsdale Wellington Boots?

I am products editor at Horse & Hound and have been testing products for the last 10 years. Two Bare Feet Hi-Vis Lightweight Riding Robe

Two Bare Feet is a brand better known for water sports products, but they have extended their range to challenge the best riding robes for equestrians. The Two Bare Feet Hi-vis Lightweight riding robe is made from recycled materials and has an official waterproof rating of 10,000mm – this coat has never let me down, even during heavy downpours.

This coat is great if you are looking for a longer oversized jacket offering some warmth, without it being too heavy. Not only have I worn this coat around the horses, but took it away camping in very wet and windy conditions. They have a variety of colour options so you’re sure to find something that suits you.

Fit

I’m 5ft4in and a UK12 and I would normally size up in coats to accommodate for layers when it gets cold. However, with the oversized fit I tested an XS and had plenty of room for extra layers.

Definitely refer to their size chart before ordering. The coat finished just after the top of my wellies, which prevented rain running off my coat into them.

Features

Having a soft sherpa lining meant this coat offers warmth without the extra weight, making it a good in-between coat if you are looking for something more than a lightweight jacket but don’t want the warmth and weight of a big and heavy winter coat.

The hood has a peak with a drawstring adjustment at the back to prevent it from blowing down in the wind and keeping the rain out of your face. I was even able to get the hood over my riding helmet.

The side zips and two-way zipper meant it was easy for me to adjust the coat for a comfortable fit when riding – I wore this coat for hacking and light schooling. The Velcro leg straps were easy to fit and have a popper to keep them out of the way when not in use.

The fleece-lined pockets helped to keep my hands warm and protected when I was spectating, while the reflective detailing offered added visibility in low light.

I have had to wash this coat on a couple of occasions in the washing machine on a cool wash after some muddy camping trips and hung it out to dry on the washing line. It has fared well and still looking in great condition.

Verdict

This coat may be the perfect addition to your wardrobe if you’re working to a budget but don’t want to compromise on quality – and I think getting an equestrian specific one is really important if you would like to ride in it. It has stood up well to regular use and washing.

Two Bare Feet do offer another riding robe (which you can see here on Amazon), but without the hi-vis elements and with a slightly lower waterproof rating, so this would be my recommendation if you’re looking at both as a horse owner.

Hestt Eco-Ultra Robe

The Hestt Eco-Ultra Robe is made from recycled materials and has an official waterproof rating of 20,000mm – I can confirm it has kept me bone dry even when it’s been bucketing down.

For me this coat really came into its own with keeping me warm. I feel the cold and last winter I wore this coat with a thin jumper underneath in sub-zero temperatures and never felt the cold. The full length offered great coverage and extra warmth for my legs. The outer material does not attract debris and it is easy to wipe clean. I tested the herringbone colour, which is very smart and does not look out of place away from the yard.

Fit

I’m 5ft4in and a UK12 and I would normally size up in coats to accommodate layers. However, with the oversized fit you get with riding robes, I tested a small and had plenty of room for extra layers and freedom over my shoulders.

I probably could have got away with a smaller size as I didn’t need to accommodate many layers due to the warm lining. They have unique sizing so make sure you refer to their size chart before ordering.

The coat finished just after the top of my wellies and it had a slightly lower end with a split at the back, so you didn’t feel restricted by the longer length when walking. I have worn this coat while walking, hacking, carrying out day to day tasks with the horses such as poo picking, lungeing, feeding hay etc.

Features

The thick warm lining meant it was my go-to coat whenever the temperatures dropped as I didn’t need too many extra layers. It is better suited to the colder temperatures – when it’s mild I find myself getting too warm.

The hood has drawstring adjustment around the front and Velcro at the back for height adjustment. I could easily fit the hood over my riding helmet.

The side zips and two-way zipper meant I could adjust the coat for a more comfortable fit when in the saddle and it also allowed me to access the leg loops more easily. I found the leg straps a bit fiddly as you have to loop them back through once you put them round your leg.

The outer pockets and zips have storm flaps to prevent the rain getting in and the fleece-lined pockets and zip pulls are great especially when you have cold hands.

It is described as washable by hand in cool water. I haven’t washed it yet, even though I wore it through last winter it really hasn’t attracted too much dirt as I’ve been brushing the mud off when it has dried.

Verdict

This coat is very warm with a thick lining so it does feel heavier than some others – it’s the perfect coat if you are spending long periods of time out in the elements and you feel the cold.

Rydale Ladies Utility Changing Robe review

The Rydale Ladies Utility Changing Robe has an official waterproof rating of up to 10,000mm. It has performed well in rain, but I feel the material does get more saturated than other riding robes I have tested. The fleece lining is not as deep, which results in less hay and bedding getting caught in it, but it still offers warmth without being too thick and heavy.

Oversized robes are not very flattering but the elastic adjustment around the waist gives more of a fitted look to it. When it’s getting colder and you need something more than a lightweight jacket, this fleece-lined robe from Rydale does the job.

Fit

I’m 5ft4in and a UK12 and I would normally size up in coats to accommodate layers. However with the oversized fit I tested a S/M and had plenty of room for layers.

I did find this coat was a little long in length, which meant it did seem to pick up more dirt than the others when I was out in muddy ground. My mum, who is 5ft9in, tried this coat on and found it came up longer in length compared to the Reincoat Pro. Make sure you check their size chart before ordering.

Features

The warm fleece lining is not as thick and heavy as others I’ve tested, so I do find myself adding an extra layer particularly on a cold crisp morning.

The hood has drawstring adjustment around the front and Velcro at the back. It has a smaller hood, but it’s still big enough to fit over my riding hat if needed.

The long side zips and riding skirt meant I could ride comfortably and had plenty of coverage, but if you are long in the leg you might not get as much as I did.

The Velcro leg straps are easy to adjust and popper out the way when not in use. It also has deep fleece-lined pockets.

This is personal preference but I tested the navy/pink, which wouldn’t be my colour of choice, but it is available in navy/olive so you should be able to find a colour that suits.

It is described as hand wash only. I haven’t washed it yet, but will update as soon as I have done so.

Verdict

This coat is great value with plenty of practical riding features making it an ideal all-round robe if you are looking for something more than a lightweight coat riding jacket.

The Raincoat Lite is definitely one of the best riding robes. It’s lightweight enough to not feel stuffy, but is powerfully waterproof (17,000mm) – keeping you bone dry even when it’s pouring down outside. This versatile coat is perfect for the warmer wet days, but due to the oversized fit there is plenty of room to layer up underneath if you want to wear it all year round.

This long riding coat has been perfect for the unpredictable weather. I am a big fan of the adjustable, waist-cinching design as it’s a lot more flattering than most of the other waterproof riding robes I have tried. They have the same feature on the Reincoat Pro, but this has a thicker lining for added warmth. The full length offers great coverage in and out of the saddle.

Fit

However with the oversize fit and as advised by Reincoat I tested a small and still have plenty of room to play with if I need to layer up. Due to the generous sizing refer to their size chart before ordering. The hood stows away, which is handy, and it has plenty of adjustment, which is great once you have adjusted it to fit you. I can also adjust it to go over my riding hat if needed.

The large side zips and reflective ‘reinshields’ (the skirt section) kept me fully covered and protected when in the saddle and I didn’t find the coat got in the way when riding. Fleece-lined outer pockets offer ample room for essentials and added warmth for cold hands. Reflective detailing offers added visibility when out and about.

The Reincoat Lite is an ultralight jacket with a breathable mesh lining, a stowable hood and reflective detailing on the skirt, making it ideal for warmer, wet conditions where a lighter jacket is preferred. The Reincoat Pro hass a thick, warm lining, making it a heavier option better suited for colder temperatures.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* Not everyone can have a different jacket for riding, yard work, dog walking and everyday. So if you’re looking for a long jacket that is perfect for all kinds of weather, in and out of the saddle, Reincoat Lite is the coat for you.

The oversized fit allows room for you to layer up underneath and wear during the colder months, making it an ideal investment for year-round use. I would recommend it to anyone who is out in all weathers.

Reincoat Pro review

The Reincoat Pro is made from a triple-layer fabric that is breathable, windproof and guaranteed to keep you dry with an official waterproof rating of 17,000mm. I have worn this in everything from light windy weather to torrential downpours and it has always kept me bone dry.

I am a big fan of the adjustable, waist-cinching design as it’s a lot more flattering than most of the other waterproof riding robes I have tried. This coat is designed to perform best in colder weather due to its warm lining. The full length offered great coverage in and out of the saddle.

Fit

I’m 5ft4in and a UK12 and I would normally size up in coats to accommodate layers. However, due to the oversize fit I was advised by Reincoat to test a small, which still gave plenty of room to play with if I needed to layer up. Definitely refer to their size chart before ordering. The coat finished just below the top of my boots and offered good coverage when in the saddle thanks to the ‘reinshields’ (skirt section) at the sides.

The LeMieux All Elements Robe has an official waterproof rating of 12,000mm. One of the best riding robes, this coat has performed well in wet and cold conditions. It has a cosy lining and fleece lined arms. It offers a loose fit, and is available in sizes UK 6–18.

The outer material is durable and easy to wipe clean, which is great if you’ve got dogs or your horse kicks up mud. The design is super smart and does not look out of place away from the yard.

It offers warmth without being too thick and heavy. It has a detachable hood which is lined, adjustable and peaked so you can get the right fit for you.

Fit

I’m 5ft4in and a UK12, but I would normally size up in coats to accommodate layers. However, with the loose fit I opted for a UK 12 and found I still had room for a thicker jumper – although, I haven’t yet needed it with the warm lining.

I did find this coat was a little long for me, which meant it did get more dirty around the bottom when I bent down, but the material was easy to wipe clean, so it didn’t bother me too much.

Features

The faux fur lining is perfect for crisp mornings and colder evenings, and the peaked hood is lined, which adds to the overall warmth. The cords on the hood slack off with time, which loosens the hood, so I’ve had to knot them to stay where I want them. The peak, however, does a good job at keeping the rain from dripping in my face. There aren’t as many adjustments on the hood as there are on other riding robes I’ve tested, such as the Two Bare Feet riding robe, but the hood does fit over my riding helmet.

The robe has has front and back air vents, which help to keep you comfortable especially when you are moving around and getting warmer – I think they made a noticeable difference and prevented me from getting too hot.

It has one large back riding vent that comes up quite high, which makes it hard to unzip when the coat is on, but offers good coverage when in the saddle. The two-way front zip meant I could get comfortable without being restricted.

It has elasticated leg straps, but I found them to be fiddly – I couldn’t adjust them with my gloves on, which was disappointing. The lined hand pockets are a welcomed added extra.

This robe is available in four different colours – I tested the damson colour and I really love it.

The robe is described as machine washable at 30°C. I haven’t washed it yet, as it’s still looking great even after months of regular wear and I like to avoid unnecessary washing to prolong the waterproofing. I have just been wiping it off when I get muddy, but I will add more notes once I have washed it.

Verdict

This is more expensive robe-style coat, but I think it is worth the investment with the extra features. It also looks smart enough to be worn away from the stables. If you are after a durable warm long coat that will keep you protected from the elements – both in and out of the saddle – and your budget allows, this is the coat for you.

This is the fourth book in The Starlight Stables Gang (SSG) series, written by superstar equestrian influencer and YouTuber Esme Higgs in collaboration with award-winning author Jo Cotterill. It’s a fun adventure series, “for animal-mad eight- to 12-year-olds”.

The central themes are ponies, fun and friendship, but this tale has a hard twist of reality with the central character, Daniel, having a tricky time juggling his chaotic home life, poverty, school and his love for the ponies at the riding school. Inclusivity and diversity are always key within Esme’s SSG tales, and this one is no exception.

Christmas is coming but while most of the SSG are excited about the annual seasonal party at the stables, Daniel isn’t feeling very festive. His mum isn’t well and he’s struggling to manage caring for her and helping at home, alongside school work and finding time to go to Starlight Stables – the place he loves the most.

Then Daniel finds an abandoned horse in need of his help and suddenly he’s got another thing to worry about. . . But will it prove one thing too many? Or will Daniel finally trust his friends enough to open up and ask for help when he needs it the most?

Review

This is a heartwarming story of a 13-year-old boy growing up in a large and chaotic household, living on the breadline. For Daniel, horses – and the friendships he makes at the stables – are his oasis of calm. While most pony literature is aimed at girls, this seems like a brave and much-needed departure, with the central character being male.

The Pony Whisperer captures the thrill and emotion of a young teenager who knows the unfathomable rewards that horses can bring to a troubled soul, and wants to reciprocate that gift. Unlike many “pony books” which centre around yard bitchiness, competition fever and pretty ponies, this is a gritty read.

Without wanting to give away spoilers, Daniel is the oldest child with a lot of siblings, and with his dad in prison he shoulders a lot of responsibility for the household at a young age. He wants to throw himself headlong into helping at the yard, but he’s torn with the weight of challenges back home.

Despite the tough setting, The Pony Whisperer is an enjoyable read which races along, yet makes you think and get into the main characters’ minds. The people are likeable; I found myself really rooting for Daniel and sympathising with his tough lot in life. More than once, I felt my eyes prick with tears when he finds solace in the company of a horse and quite what it means to him. And wow, what wonderful friends he has made at the yard! Crucially, there are also some equines to fall in love with – or despise: Toffee and her toffee-nosed owner being cases in point!

As with previous SSG stories, the inclusivity threads are strong. Virtually every character has some diverse side to them, teaching young readers never to judge – unless, of course, it involves anyone being mean to a horse or pony.

Verdict

A gritty yet heartwarming adventure story for pony-mad kids with a strong message of inclusivity, friendship and kindness. With its festive theme, it makes an ideal Christmas gift and could give you some ideas for the yard come December!

First impressions of the Maaree Solidarity sports bra

I was lucky enough to catch up with the Maaree team at the National Equine Show where I was fitted specifically for a Solidarity high-impact sports bra. Since breastfeeding, I have found it difficult to find the right support especially when riding, but this sports bra made me feel supported and comfortable again.

During my fitting I was surprised to go up a cup size and down a band size, ending up with a size 34FF. I would strongly recommend taking advantage of their bra fittings, which they offer either in person at events or via Zoom as it could make all the difference. The back has multiple hook-and-eye settings, the shoulder straps and overband are adjustable, and it can even be converted into a racerback.

Overview of performance

This fitted really well with plenty of adjustment, which allowed me to get the perfect fit. It was comfortable and the overband made a real difference. It has washed well and shows no signs of wear even after regular use. I have worn this bra for the last three months for schooling, hacking, jumping, running on the treadmill and even the odd boogie bounce class and I cannot fault it.

I feel much more supported than my previous sports bra with noticeable less bounce, thanks to the overband. I also love that you can wear it as a racerback for times you need extra support and usually opt for this style. I have not suffered any chafing under the breasts because the support band is wide and well-fitted, so doesn’t rub when you move. I also noticed I didn’t get as hot and sweaty as I have done in other sports bras. It also didn’t dig in anywhere, so I often forgot I had a sports bra on at times.

Overall, this is a flattering sports bra that provides good support. I would strongly recommend this sports bra if your budget can stretch and you are looking for all-day support and comfort. I like it as I can wear it at the yard and the gym for long periods of time and it offers support without feeling restricted.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* This is the most comfortable and well fitted sports bra I own. I was finding riding uncomfortable, especially after having a baby, but this sports bra is amazing. I would highly recommend it – as well as the professional fitting.

These high-performance cross-country boots are designed in collaboration with MIMsafe, creators of the MIMclip. Engineered for ultimate protection and stability, they are made of materials that radiate shock away from an impact, which is new for equestrian sport. They are made from an ultra-strong outer shell that is a one-piece TPU mould to ensure maximum flexibility and freedom of movement, and offer 360° leg protection and support. The V-cut front profile is designed to reduce friction and drag upon contact with a fence.

First impressions

These boots look really smart, felt super-lightweight, and appear to be well designed with protection in all the right places. I found them a bit fiddly to fit to begin with – to ensure the V-cut front was in the correct position – but after a few attempts I was more confident.

Overview of performance

These boots are seriously impressive, proving themselves to be tough and hard-wearing. I’ve used them for nearly a year on the cross-country course, for fast work on the gallops, and even in the sea.

I tested both the front and hind boots in size medium on a 15.2hh Irish Draught mare, and they were a great fit. My mare is super-sensitive but didn’t experience any rubs or slipping, and I believe her legs stayed cooler than in her previous cross-country boots. They were very secure and didn’t move at all.

Being so lightweight and having plenty of features to prevent them hindering movement, combined with the level of protection offered, gave me peace of mind whatever discipline we were doing.

I liked how they offered all-round protection while staying so lightweight. They didn’t hold water and have cleaned up really well even with regular, long-term use.

You can’t get away from the fact that these boots are expensive, so if you’re not planning to use them frequently you might be better off with a more affordable option – however, they’re excellent quality, definitely one of the best cross-country boots I’ve tried, and if you’ll get the use out of them they are a great investment.

Verdict

Super smart boots with plenty of technical features and materials that gave me peace of mind as they really keep my horse’s legs protected and cool. These boots are pricey, but a worthwhile investment for the competitive rider.

The Solid Bar Company No Fly repellent bar H&H Approved

The Solid Bar Company Equine No Fly is a natural, deet-free, concentrated insect repellent bar, which can be used as an alternative or in addition to one of the best fly sprays. It repels flies, gnats, midges, mosquitoes, noseeums, and black fly.

It’s available in a tin (68g), as a refill (68g) or as a roll-on (125g).

First impressions

I tested the 125g roll-on and when it arrived in the post I was greeted with a lovely lemony smell, not chemical like some others. It reminded me of summer. I was a bit worried about the cardboard eco-friendly packaging not standing up to regular use and yard life.

Overview of performance

I tested the Equine No Fly repellent bar on my four horses who live out 24/7, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it working straightaway when applied to their faces. I also applied it to their legs and bellies with similar success, it reduced tail swishing, head shaking and stamping.

We have a heavy fly burden in our area and also suffer with horse flies, and I found the results were effective up to 7 hours after application. On very hot days, however I did reapply at midday in addition to the usual morning and night applications to ensure it continued to be effective.

Where we are we suffer with horseflies and the horses are much more relaxed while hacking out when this product has been applied. I am very surprised that the cardboard packaging has stood up well to regular use and being thrown in my “summer essentials” bucket.

A downside of this fly repellent bar is that the product attracts dust where applied – this was more noticeable on my grey horse. For a multi-horse owner, I found this fly repellent on the pricey side, especially when applying three times a day in very hot weather. However, you do get what you pay for and it was effective and long-lasting, so I just use it on certain problem areas and top up the protection with a spray to make it last longer. I would happily purchase it again.

I really like this fly repellent and the results it gives. It is gentle yet effective and it smells amazing.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – A great product for targeted application with long-lasting protection. I saw a noticeable reduction in flies when applied.

I was thrilled to test the updated version of the WeatherBeeta Kyla (new for AW24) because I’ve kept it no secret that the Kyla is one of my favourite winter riding coats I’ve ever tested.

I’d recommend this coat to someone looking for an all-rounder – if you’re at the yard in all weathers, doing all the jobs as well as riding, this is an excellent option. It’s waterproof (water just beads up and rolls off) and protects you from the wind, warm without being too hot, and looks smart without feeling too smart, which would make you worried about getting it dirty. It’s great to ride in as it offers that extra bit of leg coverage without getting in the way. And you can adjust the waist toggle to nip it in a bit for a more flattering fit.

There wasn’t much for WeatherBeeta to improve on, but the small changes they’ve made have made it just that bit better! Some of the niggles I had with the original version have been fixed, as well as some bonus upgrades, including:

it’s now waterproof to 10,000mm (previously 5,000m) – it was great before but this is excellent
the front pockets have been lowered, which makes them easier to access while you’ve got a high-vis jacket on
the air vents under the arms have been removed – I liked these previously, but I don’t miss them, and if it saves cost to have other benefits I’m all for leaving them off

I’ve kept my full review of the original version below (along with some pictures, while the gallery above includes images of the updated version), and aside from the slight design changes all my thoughts still stand firm. There are a range of colour options available, and I’d still recommend this coat even if you could only get hold of the older version – although I don’t expect you’ll have any trouble as it’s very well stocked. Verdict

H&H Approved – I really can’t recommend the WeatherBeeta Kyla II Waterproof Jacket coat enough. It’s been my go-to coat in some awful weather and it’s really stood up to the challenge. It’s slightly less filled than some of the other coats I’ve tested this year, but if you’re mucking out and poo picking you don’t want something too heavy, so this is ideal.

When looking at the studio photo of this winter riding coat, I don’t think it looks to be anything special – definitely not shapely – but I can assure you it looks so much better in person. I have had a lot of compliments and two of my friends at the yard have now gone out and bought one, too. It’s available in blue, black and mulberry – I’ve got the blue, which I like, but the mulberry is really lovely.

This coat doesn’t feel as long as it is. When I catch my reflection walking past a window, I’m always surprised at how much of me it covers. This is a positive – I this I forget how long it is because the coat doesn’t feel heavy and I’m in no way restricted like you might be with some other long waterproof riding coats. I would say it’s the perfect length for a bit of extra leg coverage.

The overall fit is fantastic. I’m 5ft2in and a pretty standard UK10. I’ve got the size small and it fits with plenty of room without feeling too big. I can get a couple of good layers on under it if I need to, but if I’m riding then I’m usually warm enough without.

The rear of the coat has discreet magnets, similar to the LeMieux Loire Waterproof Coat, but this coat has a gusset rather than coming completely apart. It sits nicely over the saddle and covers the tops of my legs well.

The collar is really tall – it feels taller than it looks, too – so it’s really protective when it’s windy. It conceals the hood, which is zipped in and easy to get out with one hand. The hood itself is thin, but I’ve usually got a riding hat, beanie or cap on, so I’ve rarely needed to use it. In many ways I prefer to only have a small, thin hood for emergencies as they can feel heavy and get in the way.

The WeatherBeeta Kyla has lots of pockets, which is great. The two front pockets are really deep and hold a lot, which is great – my only gripe is they start quite high up so they can be tricky to undo at times. For this reason, I use the chest pocket a lot as I find it easier to access. There is also a pocket on the inside of the coat.

From the inside you can also see the underarm vents, which are zipped on the outside, the adjustment at the waist, which gives the coat more shape, and the internal pocket.

I’ve worn this coat in all weathers and it has kept me dry. It’s got a rating of 5,000mm, which makes it suitable for average rain, but I’ve found it to be plenty sufficient. I expect it will last a few winters with really heavy use.

Verdict

I think it says a lot that my friends have decided to buy the same one after checking it out, too. It’s good value – but if you can get it at any kind of discount then I’d definitely snap it up.

Ariat Tempest Waterproof Insulated Parka

My first impressions of the Ariat Tempest long waterproof jacket were overwhelmingly positive, and they remain so after wearing it for a couple of months, including during a full week of sub-zero temperatures, which is unusual here in the UK. It has become my first-choice coat to wear to the stables during cold winter weather and I’ve received complements from friends on its appearance.

I particularly like the soft snug cuffs at the wrists, which prevent drafts going up the arms and help keep hands warm, while the outer arms are of sufficient length to protect the cuffs from getting wet in the rain. I’m also a big fan of the plush and quilted lining, which is really warm. I’ve rarely needed to put on a thicker jumper underneath it to deal with the cold.

The double-vented rear can be easily opened and shut with zips, making it equally suitable for riding as wearing around the yard. This coat is very comfortable to wear both in and out of the saddle, although I’ve found it is too warm for wear for a full schooling or jumping session. However, it is ideal for wearing out hacking on cold, inclement winter days, especially as it easily covers the top of two-thirds of my thighs, as well as the back of my saddle, while I am riding.

The jacket has plenty of pockets, which is always a plus for an equestrian jacket. On the outside there is one with a zip on the left chest, which I find useful for my phone, then two lower down on either side – one that opens at the top and secures with two press studs and then a diagonal one over the top of that with a zip.

I’ve found the diagonal ones a little awkward to open and close with one hand, while I’m always concerned about things falling out of pockets that are only secured with a flap and press studs. Also, because the pockets overlay each other, it’s not easy to know which pocket the item you are looking for is in, which can be annoying when you dive into one to get something and then realise it is in the other, however my ability to remember what I’ve put in each pocket has improved with time. There is also a pocket on the inside over the left chest, which is secured with a zip fastening.

The jacket comes with a removable and adjustable hood, which is secured with hidden press studs to maintain a stylish appearance and has the same plush lining as the body of the jacket. Once removed, there is a clever flap that covers the studs, which is secured via hook and loop fastenings to maintain the sleek appearance of the jacket. The size of the hood can be adjusted via a hidden toggle fastening at the rear of the hood. I can confirm the robustness of this elastic and toggle fastening after my horse got hold of said toggle and decided to tow me around the stable as a source of his own entertainment! Much to my relief, everything emerged unscathed as I had images of said toggle disappearing down his throat, never to be seen again…

I am a UK size 8, have the small size jacket on test and it is a good fit with room to wear a thick jumper underneath if needed. If you prefer your jacket to be nipped in around the waist, there is an internal elastic adjustment (shown above) so you can tailor the fit to your preference.

The jacket has washed well on a cold delicate cycle in my washing machine, coming out looking as good as new.

Our products editor Franchesca Slack, also tested this jacket she is a UK size 12/14 and tested a size large, which gave her plenty of room to wear a thicker layer underneath if needed – which is rarely needed with the warm lining.

The features that she really loved included the faux-fur lined hood, neck and upper body, which kept her super cosy. She also liked that the hood can be adjusted by a toggle to prevent it falling down and this has proved to work even during gale-force winds.

Franchesca felt the coat offers good coverage in the saddle and was pleased that it doesn’t flap. This is the coat she grabs when she knows she’s going to be outside for long periods of time and the temperature is going to be low. It has also kept her dry dry during heavy downpours.

It is an expensive coat but it is worth the investment as it is designed to last and it really does keep you protected from the elements.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* With a RRP of £310, this isn’t the cheapest long winter riding jacket on the market, but is it stylish, really warm, with clever design elements and it currently looks as good as when it first arrived, so I would say it was worth the investment if your budget will stretch to it.

LeMieux Brooke Waterproof Hybrid Jacket

I have loved this winter riding jacket from the moment it arrived. It’s a gilet, a lightweight waterproof jacket and a heavyweight winter coat with a detachable hood – so it’s a 3-in-1 coat. I really underestimated how much I would wear this and it’s my go-to jacket most days! It is really stylish and I have worn it for riding, dog walking, on school run and to the shops and it has excelled at all of these.

How well does it fit?

I am UK12/14 and usually size up in coats to allow extra room for layers. I tested the UK14 and it offers a true-to-size fit. It has a good length to it and I never had any trouble with it riding up and exposing my back to the cold. It is slightly shaped at the back, too. This coat is available in sizes UK 6–18 with a choice of four colours. I had the black on test and it looks very smart and even with heavy use it’s still looking great.

Was this coat waterproof?

The LeMieux Brooke Hybrid Jacket has a waterproof rating of 5,000mm and I can confirm I have worn it in all weathers, including heavy rain and, I’ve never got wet. I was also very impressed when I wore it out on the beach during very strong winds and it kept me protected.

I have worn the gilet on its own and it has subtle branding with a light fill and has proven to be useful especially when I’m out at the yard and short on pockets and need a thin layer on. It easily zips in and out of the coat with minimal effort and is perfect for layering. The only wear I have noticed is the branding and sizing inside the gilet has worn away, but obviously this does not affect the performance of the gilet at all.

The outer coat has a lightweight fill with a fleece-lined neck for added comfort and warmth. The taped seams have proven to be durable and the hood has toggle adjustments on each side, so I could adjust it to prevent it from falling down in the wind. I managed to keep it in place with gale force winds so I was very impressed.

This coat is really comfortable and smart. The outer material does not attract hair, bedding or hay so it is still looking smart. It has a two-way front zip but no riding vents – however, I didn’t feel restricted when riding. I have worn it for schooling, hacking and fast work and I can’t fault it. It has subtle branding down one arm so you could get away with wearing it out in a non-horsey environment.

I haven’t washed the LeMieux Brooke yet, but it is described as machine washable at 30°C. I will report back how it washes when I do.

Value

This coat is priced at £159.95, which I think is good value as you are getting a lightweight coat, gilet and a heavyweight coat in one product. I have previously found LeMieux clothing to be well made and long lasting so I expect this coat to last for many winters to come.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* I really love this coat, it’s smart, versatile and good quality and I have received compliments while wearing it. The flattering fit and lightweight feel has meant that it has become my favourite go-to coat. I am going to buy it in a different colour to keep as my non horsey coat!

Harry Hall All-Weather Full Length Riding Coat

The Harry Hall All-Weather full length riding coat has an official waterproof rating of 10,000mm and I can confirm it has always kept me dry even during long periods of heavy rain. It has a slightly longer cut at the back, which I liked as it offered extra coverage from the elements. This long waterproof riding coat has 100g fill so ideal if you are looking for a warm winter coat or you feel the cold.

Fit

I’m 5ft4in and a UK12 but would normally size up in coats to accommodate layers and I tested the size L. You can adjust the draw cord on either side, to either make the coat more fitted or a bit looser to your preference. I found I had plenty of room and with the 100g fill I didn’t need as many layers so I don’t actually think sizing up (if you usually would) is necessary.

It was a little long in length, but didn’t get in the way. It came down to below my knees covering the top of my wellies and slightly lower at the back, which meant the hem became dirty quickly if I was walking across muddy ground. My mum is size UK16 and she can wear this coat with a couple of layers and not feel restricted, so I would say the sizing is generous. It’s available in XXS–4XL (UK6–22).

Features

The leg straps meant the coat didn’t flap around in the wind. I have worn it when hacking, doing fast work and for flatwork lessons during the cold snap but found after I had warmed up I was a little too hot.

The front of the coat has a two-way zip for added comfort in the saddle. I found the outer material makes a rustly noise compared to other coats I have – this was not a problem for me but it might be if you have a sensitive horse.

The large rear zip riding vent allows the coat to sit comfortably and cover the saddle when riding without being restrictive. I found the vent a bit more fiddly than others, but I think this was due to the overall length on me. It offered the most coverage when in the saddle out of all the coats I tested. The hood was a nice size that didn’t get in the way when riding. It also has a storm peak and bungee cord at the side for a closer fit, which together kept the rain out of my face.

The high collar has a fleece lining. One feature I loved was the magnetic closure of the storm placket with poppers at the bottom; this saved time especially when I had my gloves on. All the fittings have stood up well to regular use. The storm cuffs were an added bonus – not something I usually look out for.

This coat has performed well and I preferred wearing it during colder wet weather for general yard duties and riding, particularly because hay and bedding didn’t stick to the material.

It is described as machine washable at 30°C. I haven’t washed it yet, as it’s still looking great even after three months of regular wear. I have just been letting the mud dry and brushing it off.

If you prefer something a little shorter, just covering the top of your thighs, Harry Hall have a very similar coat with the same waterproof rating so I’d recommend the Harry Hall Original All-Weather Coat instead.

Verdict

This coat is warm and waterproof without being heavy – it’s ideal if you feel the cold or spend long periods of time out in the elements.

My first impressions of the Equetech Stratus were that is looked gorgeous but I wondered how long this might last. I particularly loved the faux fur hood edge.

How well does the Equetech Stratus fit?

I am a 5ft3in curvy UK10, so I ordered (on advice of the size guide) a size S. Unfortunately, I received an XS – however, after a few minutes of panic that my beautiful new coat might not fit, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it did. Yes, the S would probably look slightly better on me, but I am comfortable wearing it and love the design so much that I can’t bear to part with it. Moral of the story is – you definitely don’t need to size up even if you prefer a looser fit as this coat is true to size with room for a layer.

The actual cut of the coat is very flattering – while you can see that it is stretched over me in some places due to it being a size too small, the overall shape still looks great. The rear vents help with this too.

Performance in winter weather

This coat is waterproof to 16,000mm, which is one of the highest of all waterproof riding jackets on the markets – it will keep you warm and dry if you get caught in one of the worst downpours.

You can remove the fur trim on the hood if desired – which might be wise if you know bad weather is coming – and it simply zips off. The hood does fit over a riding hat if you need it to, and it can also be tightened at the front for really windy weather. Suddenly this coat is looking much more practical!

Features

Like all good riding coats, the Stratus has a two-way zip, which is covered by a storm flap with hidden magnets. I love this detail because it’s always closed, keeping water out and looking tidy, but it also eliminates any fiddling when doing up or undoing your coat. It also has zipped rear vents, which make it sit beautifully (and comfortably) over the saddle.

The coat has zipped pockets on the front, with the lovely snaffle detailing you see on many Equetech products. The storm cuffs have thumbholes to help keep your wrists covered.

Is the Equetech Stratus worth the money?

Yes, in short. Coats are expensive, but I believe this one will last – and it has the bonus of looking great on, too. I’ve also worn it to non-horsey outdoor social activities and it’s been perfect. There are, of course, cheaper coats out there, but I haven’t seen any in this style that are quite so practical, too.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – This super-stylish riding coat isn’t just nice to look at, but it’s highly technical, too. Of all the coats I’ve tested, this is my favourite to look at so if you’re looking for a short coat that makes you feel great while also keeping you dry, this could be the one. I really don’t have anything negative to say about this coat other than if you’re likely to get covered in head-to-toe in mud doing yard chores, I would opt for a long coat for yard wear and save this one for riding.

The Pikeur Renee Rain Coat does not match my usual choice of yard or winter riding coat when it comes to style – I tend to opt for something that might be considered more practical, such as the WeatherBeeta Kyla. However, since having it on test, I have reached for it ahead of all my other options on many occasion and I have to say that I’ve been converted to the puffer style. If I want to feel like I’ve worn my duvet to the yard in the morning, this is my number one choice.

I’ve had a lot of compliments on this coat, too. And while I might not have chosen red initally, it does look good on and I feel good wearing it (and that’s not just because it’s super cosy). It felt like a bit of a strange shape at first – but I reminded myself that this is a riding coat, not a school run coat and it will come into it’s own once I’m in the saddle.

How well does the Pikeur Renee fit?

I am a 5ft3in curvy UK10 and the size 10 was the perfect fit. The bottom of the coat sits just above my knees when standing and covers most of my thigh when I’m in the saddle. One someone of average height, it would probably finish mid-thigh when standing. It’s available in UK4–18 and in dark navy or red.

Because of the two-way zip and the way the bottom half of the coat splits, it does sit nicely in the saddle, but I found that some areas of my leg felt the wind chill. Long waterproof riding coats that only split down the centre at the back are likely to cover more area without gaps, but I understand that a puffy design like this one probably wouldn’t work so well like that.

The sleeves were a good length, covering my arms without interfering – and the cuffs felt solid and didn’t sag over time, which I’ve found with other coats.

There are two zipped outer pockets in addition to a zipped inner pocket. The outer pockets sit quite high and aren’t accessible if you wear a hi-vis tabard – but this is unlikely to be an issue for many.

Otherwise, the coat was easy to move in (thanks for the four-way stretch material) and fitted well overall. The zip-off hood is generous (and accommodates a riding hat) and has an adjuster at the rear, but it still blew off in strong winds.

How does the Pikeur Renee stand up to bad weather?

The Pikeur Renee is very waterproof (8,000mm), which means it should stand up to moderate rain, but won’t be as effective as coats with >10,000mm in a downpour. I found it to cope absolutely fine in light rain or snow, and I wore it in a downpour, just to see, and while the water didn’t come through, I wouldn’t opt to wear it in that weather again as the raindrops don’t bead up and run off. It did keep me dry for as long as it took me to do my yard chores that evening, but everything stuck to the material – I looked filthy.

If you’re looking for a truly waterproof coat, then this probably isn’t for you – but if you’re more of a fair weather rider and only don’t find yourself in heavy rain too often, this coat is a great option.

It’s also worth noting that this coat is very warm – absolutely ideal for cold days, but too much if you’re poo picking in mild weather.

Is the Pikeur Renee worth the money?

You can’t get away from the fact that this coat is expensive, but I do think Pikeur is always fantastic quality. If you wore the coat every day for five months over winter, it would work out £1.76/day – and that’s just one winter’s wear, this will last you a few. You could keep it on for the school run and supermarket trips, too, so you’d get a lot of wear out of it, increasing the value.

In short, yes it probably is worth the money – I’d certainly be reluctant to give it back and go through the rest of this winter without it, that’s for sure. And I wouldn’t have guessed that when it arrived.

*H&H Approved* – I really didn’t expect to love this coat as much as I did – and I chose it over others far more than I imagined. It’s a great coat and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel like they’ve not really got out of bed in the morning.

I was pleasantly surprised at how smart the Shires Aubrion Halcyon long waterproof riding coat was when it arrived. It is cut slightly longer at the back and the outer material was tough but not rigid with a smooth finish and it was in a lovely smart charcoal colour. This coat was perfect for the cold winter weather. It has proven to be waterproof and has kept me dry, cosy and warm even in -2°C.

Waterproof performance

The Halcyon long coat has an official waterproof rating of 5,000mm. It has kept me dry during heavy rain, but I did find the cuffs soaked up water when riding so I ended up with wet gloves.

When out in the rain, the water just runs off the material so it doesn’t soak into the fabric, which allows the coat to dry faster. This was perfect for me as when it rained in the morning the coat would be dry before I needed it again in the evening.

Fit

I’m 5ft4in and a UK12 but would normally size up in coats to accommodate layers and I tested the size S. This coat was originally ordered for my colleague who is a UK8 and found the sizing to be too generous. I fitted in the coat but found it to be tight around the bust area. I think my ideal size in this coat would be M.

It was a good length, coming down to below my knees covering the top of my wellies and coming past the top of my riding boots. My riding instructor borrowed it during a lesson and commented on the warmth and good length saying it was perfect for teaching. It’s available in XXXS–XXXL (UK4–22) and blue and charcoal colour options.

Features

The rear zip riding vent makes this coat comfortable to ride in and you don’t feel restricted when in the saddle. It’s easy to undo when needed. It was a good length and kept my legs warmer and protected from the rain. The back gusset is a good size and it covers the saddle. The front of the coat has a two-way zip for added comfort in the saddle.

The hood is a generous size and I found I needed to take it off when riding. It has bungee adjustment to help get a closer fit and prevent it from falling off with the wind.

I really liked that the high collar, upper torso, pockets and hood are lined so offered added warmth where needed. I was a little put off by some of the plastic fittings as it make the coat look cheap but they have proven to stand up to regular use.I preferred wearing this coat when hacking and on the yard but during colder temperatures and found it quite warm, and I could easily wear it with just a base layer and be warm enough.

I haven’t washed the Shires Aubrion Halcyon long coat yet, but I have found if it gets muddy it’s easy to wipe off with a sponge. It is described as machine washable at 30°C. I will report back once I’ve washed it.

Fit

The Toggi Murphy riding jacket is flattering. I am a UK10 but usually size up to a UK12 in winter riding coats to allow for layers and freedom to move. I did the same for this test and liked the fit – that said I would only recommend sizing up if, like me, you like a pretty loose fit as the jacket is true to size gives a tailored fit.

The sleeves have adjustable cuffs, and came up ever so slightly short on me. However, this didn’t affect its performance for me – I do have quite long arms so I’m used to it. It’s available in UK8-20.

Waterproof performance

The coat performed satisfactorily in the rain and cold, keeping me warm and dry. I like the concealed hood, and the jacket length and riding vent makes it ideal for schooling on chilly days. I’d say it’s ideal for chilly autumn or spring mornings – the weight of fill in this jacket isn’t for the absolute depths of winter. However, this makes is really good for schooling in the cold without overheating.

I’ve worn this coat out for hacking, schooling, dog walks and yard chores – including poo picking in the rain – and it’s worked well for more active tasks as I don’t get too hot in it. However, I found dirt didn’t brush off it too easily, making me hesitant to use it while grooming!

Features

Unfortunately, this jacket has no inside pocket – this was a real downside for me as I like to keep my phone and keys secure inside my jacket. Plus, the side pockets are not secured in any way, so I was worried about losing the contents. They have a neat pocket flap, so don’t let rain in and look sweet, but I found this an odd design choice for a rider’s coat.

The poppers snap together easily and secure the riding vent well when not in use. The riding vent allows the coat to sit nicely in the saddle and means the jacket doesn’t bunch and keeps its flattering silhouette.

While the inner lining is a shiny and slippy, the high collar is lined with faux suede, which feels nice on the skin. The storm cuffs keeps the sleeves in place and I can still bend my arms freely – I just have a little wrist poking out. The hood doesn’t fit over my rather bulky skull cap, but this isn’t something that’s a priority for me.

I firmly believe this coat comes down to personal preference. For me, the shiny metallic lining and gold details are a little off-putting and to blingy for everyday use – but that’s just me. Overall, this just wasn’t the coat for me. While I enjoyed riding in it and like the fit, the large branding on the arm and shining details and pocket situation means I wouldn’t buy again. If you’re a regular competitor who is looking for a smart coat to warm up in at shows, this coat is an absolute winner. It’s chic and smart and looks attractive – something I am not too concerned about!

The coat doesn’t lose its shape or waterproofness after washing, and it dries quickly. I’ve even left it in the car wet a few times and it’s dried! Washing instructions say 30°C, and to drip-dry out of direct sunlight.

Verdict

A chic and smart coat that offered a flattering and comfortable fit both in and out of the saddle and allows you to school without overheating. Ideal if you’re looking for a smart jacket to wear in the warm-up at shows.

Premier Equine Motet Ladies Waterproof Jacket

My first impression of the Premier Equine Motet waterproof riding jacket was its sleek, uncomplicated style – I’m a fan of the subtle branding details and think it offers a sophisticated yet understated horsey look.

Fit

This coat has a relaxed fit and is easy to move about in – I am a UK 10 and usually size up by one to a UK 12 in jackets to allow for layers and roominess. I did the same for this test and I found the jacket to be comfortable and functional whether I wore one thin layer or a couple of bulky ones underneath. That said, I would only recommend sizing up if, like me, you like a pretty loose fit – the jacket is true to size. The Motet is available in sizes UK 6–16 in French navy or black.

I’m 176cm (5ft 9in) tall, and coat covers the tops of my thighs, slightly longer than a standard coat, which I like.

Waterproof performance

The coat is lightweight yet insulating with an effective waterproof outer (which was just as effective after a wash) and a padded inner. The thin but effective waterproof outer extends beyond the lining around the hem – there’s an inch or two of ‘empty’ coat, but I found this prevents the lining from getting wet. It kept me dry on soggy days poo picking and walking the dog, but despite this I never got too hot in it.

Features

The downsides of this coat are the fact there’s no riding vent, meaning it doesn’t sit terribly neatly on the saddle – you can pull up the bottom part of the two-way zip, though. The coat doesn’t ride up while riding, and I haven’t noticed any discomfort while in the saddle, but the material bunches a bit at the sides because it can’t sit over the back of the saddle.

The drawstring in the hood isn’t knotted or toggled, and over a few wears slid out completely. I haven’t been able to replace it – I’m sure it could be done but it might take someone with a bit more patience than me! However, the storm peak keeps rain out of my face and the hood is big enough to fit comfortably over a sleek riding hat – it will just about fit over my bulky skull cap! The popper secures the hood and stops it flapping about when not in use, which is a great touch.

The pockets are plentiful which I love, there’s on the chest, one inside and two side pockets. However, they have quite stiff zippers, possibly due to the taped seams that keep the pockets watertight. I often have my hands full as an equestrian so I like to be able to do pockets one-handed – this I could not do with the Motet. I found the sleeve length perfect for my long arms and the velcro tabs secure the cuffs effectively.

This coat is described as machine washable at 30°C. As well as staying waterproof after a wash, the coat dries quickly and keeps its shape.

Verdict

Overall, I do really like the coat for its great climate control and top job at keeping the rain out. I’m not too upset by the lack of riding vent, but, while the number of pockets are a big bonus for me, the stiffness and drawstring issues are irksome. It’s a high-performing yard and dog-walking coat, but if I was looking to buy one of the best winter riding jackets, I would personally look for something that could do it all, even if that meant spending a little more.

VQ Rechargeable Hand Warmer And Power Bank

Any rider who suffers with Raynaud’s or similar conditions will know all too well the misery of trying to ride and look after horses at this time of year, with fingers like white icicles.

I’ve tried just about every insulated winter yard glove going, to no avail, so was delighted to try this VQ hand warmer and power bank.

First impressions

Initially, I wasn’t sure how useful these would be on the yard. The unit is bigger than I’d imagined, so I thought it might be less helpful when you’re using both hands to do the horses. The instructions said there was a velvet bag to keep it in, which wasn’t included, and weren’t particularly clear about turning the unit on.

I first took it with me to a non-horsey event, which involved hanging around outside in the cold and it definitely made a difference.

Warmth

Encouraged, I took the hand warmer with me to the yard, and found that it really did help. I only live five minutes’ drive from where my horses are so the car doesn’t have time to warm up on the journey, and once my fingers have gone white, they’re numb and painful all morning.

But if I turn the VQ Hand Warmer on before I leave, it’s lovely and warm by the time I get there, and then I can have one hand on it in my pocket while carrying rugs and buckets and leading horses, swapping it from one to the other so both hands get the benefit. You might think that you need two hand warmers but as most of the time doing horses – or walking the dog – you’ve only got one spare hand at most, so I think one does the job.

Charge

I’d never really thought about using disposable hand warmers as I’d get through so many and it feels like a huge amount of waste, which means this rechargeable one is perfect. The battery lasts for a good six hours of continuous warmth (more than the manufacturer’s average estimate of five hours) so not all day but once my hands are fully warm, I don’t need it all day anyway.

It’s not the fastest to charge, either; the manufacturer says it takes approximately three hours but after five, mine was only 75% charged. But if it’s on overnight, it’s fine the next day, and if you only use it in the mornings and evenings, it’ll last a couple of days at least. The unit can also be used as a power bank, which to me is secondary to warmth (and you can’t have both features going at the same time) but could definitely be handy for an emergency phone charge if you needed it.

Value

The unit is available in Cath Kidston prints for £39.99, but this plain unit is £29.99, which I think is very good value, especially as it has a year’s guarantee.

Verdict

A good-value, very useful product that anyone who suffers from cold hands will appreciate.

LeMieux Anya Waterproof Riding Coat

The LeMieux Anya long waterproof riding coat really surprised me when it arrived. It looks so stylish and smart that I’ve worn it to the yard but also out every day and for dog walking. It’s quite weighty, with a velvety lining, but once on feels super cosy and comfortable and is perfect for those low temperature, frosty mornings on the yard.

The LeMieux Anya has an official waterproof rating of 8,000mm and has kept me warm and dry in heavy rain and colder temperatures.

I’m 5ft6in and a size 12 and tested the size 12 and found it was a good fit, even with winter layers underneath. It was a decent length, coming down to around my knees covering the top of my wellies. It’s available in UK6–18.

The colour gives off shooting jacket vibes, and is a waterproof twill fabric, which I wasn’t convinced would be hugely waterproof, but it definitely held its own in torrential rain and I stayed pretty dry. However, I did find the cuffs and hem did collect a bit of water, which resulted in soggy knees and gloves but apart from that I was warm and dry underneath.

It comes with a removable fur trim for the hood, which I removed quite easily as my whippets took a fancy to and I didn’t want them to damage it. The hood also packs away neatly into the back of the collar for safety when riding. When I was dog walking in the rain it would have been nice for the hood to have a bit more of a peak to keep my face dry, but it does fit over a cap or hat, too.

The collar is nice and high, keeping wind and rain out of my neck efficiently. The front of the coat has a two-way zip and popper close, teamed with a clever magnetic close on the back to keep your saddle and legs dry.

When riding the coat was a lovely length and kept my legs warm and dry. It has two zip pockets on the outside, and one internal pocket. The coat also features elastic leg straps, which when secured round your leg whilst riding keep it in place, reducing any flapping.

The coat was quite bulky to ride in, and I preferred wearing it out hacking to in the school as I felt it limited my movements a bit while schooling due to the thickness. I wore it while warming up in the school (walking and stretching), however, and found it to be a good layer until I started to warm up.

It really kept me very warm out hacking – the length of it and the amount it covered my legs was perfect – and I was toasty even in minus temperatures and riding in walk.

It is easy to remove when in the saddle and the weight of it meant it stayed on the fence and didn’t blow away!

The vent at the back was super easy to adjust when in the saddle with one hand, as it just uses a magnet close. I found the two way zip at the front a bit tricky to do up, you have to hold both zippers quite securely at the bottom and as they are big this can be fiddly. But, once done up it is easy to open and close both zips and they don’t move from their positions when riding.

I haven’t washed the LeMieux Anya yet, but it is described as machine washable at 30°C. I have found that dirt and grease sticks to the fabric and doesn’t wipe off very easily so am hoping it washes well.

This Toggi Griffiths coat is so comfortable and smart, it has been my go-to in this wet but mild autumn as it’s not overly heavy and provides an effective waterproof layer that’s not too hot.

The Toggi Griffiths long riding coat has an official waterproof rating of 10,000mm and has kept me dry in light and heavy rain, while dog walking and hacking/schooling.

I am a size 12 and tested the size 12, finding it a snug fit over multiple winter layers, but very comfortable.

The front of the jacket has a two way zip, and the back also has a zip that enables you to keep most of your saddle dry while riding. Being mid-length it doesn’t cover a lot of your leg when you are in the saddle. I am 5ft6in, and the coat came to about mid-thigh at the front and the tops of my knees at the back when standing. When riding, it was about mid-though, too.

The shape of the jacket is really flattering, it curves down at the back and tapers in at the waist which looks lovely. There is a foldaway hood that stores neatly into the back of the collar. There is quite a large Toggi logo in gold foil on the right arm, which is the only design element I wasn’t keen on purely from an aesthetic point of view, but that’s just personal preference. There are two pockets on the outside and one on the inside, all with zips.

The articulated cuffs of the coat have a really clever shape to them, that stops any water running down and soaking into your gloves or sleeves – I definitely benefited from them when dog walking in heavy rain, too.

I found it a perfect weight for the autumn – it has a light fill that doesn’t restrict movement in the saddle at all and I didn’t get too hot while schooling. The back is a bit fiddly to unzip with gloves when you are in the saddle and trying to hold the reins, too. But, when unzipped, was lightweight, comfortable and didn’t flap around much and so therefore didn’t spook the horse.

I haven’t washed the Toggi Griffiths long riding coat yet as any dirt has wiped off easily with a cloth so far, but if I needed to it recommends on the label inside to wash at 30°C and drip dry somewhere warm. The coat also dried pretty quickly after being in the rain with the sleeves/seams not holding any more water than the rest of the fabric.

Verdict

Overall I was surprised with the performance of this jacket, it was breathable, so comfy for riding and looks smart.

Aubrion Halcyon Mid Length Coat

This coat is very warm, so I’ve had to wait until colder UK winter temperatures arrived in order to test it properly, as I quickly overheated when wearing it on milder days, despite its high breathability rating of 5000g/m². It has an official waterproof rating of 5000mm and has kept me warm and dry in both heavy rain and early winter snow.

I am a UK size 8/10 and the small is a good fit.

The bottom half of the coat is lined with a non-plush material and the whole coat is lightly quilted for warmth. The robust outer material is more bulky than some other winter coats I’ve tried, which makes it less practical for wearing during doing active yard tasks like mucking out and grooming. But it has kept me warm and dry while poo picking fields, checking field horses, turning horses out, etc.

I have hacked out in rain and snow while wearing it and I stayed warm and dry on my body with the soft plush material on the collar making it comfortable to wear when the zip is fully fastened at the top. I was concerned that the two-way plastic zip, which has no external protection in the form of a storm flap, might leak, but I’m pleased to say that hasn’t been the case so far.

While it is designed to wear both in and out of the saddle, thanks to the single rear riding vent that is easy to open and a two-way zip in front, the length of the coat means it only covers the top of thighs in the saddle so my knees did get wet, but it did a good job protecting the rear of the saddle.

There is a longer version of this coat available, which may be a better choice for riding out in inclement winter weather if you want to keep your legs and the front of the saddle dry. Although I have done some very quiet schooling in the arena while wearing this coat, I’ve found it too warm for doing anything more active than this in the saddle.

The hood is lined with the same plush material as the collar and body of the coat and attached via a zip, which makes it easy to remove. While it is adjustable via an elasticated drawstring, it isn’t big enough to put over your riding hat so I would recommend separating it from the coat when you are riding to remove any risk of it getting caught on something.

The wrist cuffs are quite large and thick and aren’t very close fitting around my narrow wrists, plus there is no additional adjustment option here, unlike the Mountain Horse Flash Deluxe Parka I’ve also been testing. The cuffs also poke out beyond the sleeve. I was concerned that the cuffs might allow drafts in or get wet, but when it is cold enough to wear this coat, I am also wearing a pair of winter gloves over the cuffs, so that hasn’t been an issue.

This coat has an inside chest pocket on the left, which is ideal for keep a mobile phone secure and dry, and is particularly convenient if you are right-handed. There are also two outer pockets with zip fastenings, that are of a good size and easy to use one-handed. The external branding is just a subtle rubberised logo on the left sleeve.

With a RRP of £129.99, this is one of the more economically priced winter riding coats on the market and I’ve found it to be a very functional item for doing essential horse care tasks during the winter.

I personally prefer the Ariat Tempest Waterproof Insulated Parka that I tested two years ago, which has a more stylish appearance and still going strong after two winters of regular wear, but it is in a very different price category at +£300. Now that I have options, I’m tending to wear the Ariat Insulated Parka when attending shows or training, walking dogs with friends and other similar public outings, and wearing the Aubrion Halcyon coat to do daily jobs around the stables.

I haven’t yet washed the Aubrion Halcyon coat, but it is described as machine washable at 30 degrees. I’ll report back once I’ve done that, but as yet, I haven’t had the need as any dirt has been easy to sponge off.

Verdict

A practical coat at a very reasonable price for doing outside tasks around the yard as well as hacking in cold and wet winter weather.

Ariat Valor 2.0 Waterproof Jacket

When looking for a new short waterproof riding coat, the Ariat Valor 2.0 Waterproof Jacket should definitely be up there on your wish list.

The coat comes under Ariat’s “warmest” rating – described as “substantial warmth, perfect for very cold conditions”, and while it is very cosy, I like that it still feels light and not bulky. For reference, Ariat also offers a rating one step up; “extreme warmth” in other products.

I’m 5ft4in and a UK6, and the extra-small was the perfect fit – with or without a jumper. I was also able to comfortably fit it over my show jacket. The coat has a tailored fit and cinched in at the waist, which not only holds-in the warmth, but makes it very flattering.

The coat is black with a cool camo pattern down the sleeves. When it comes to my equestrian wardrobe, being entirely honest ‘fashion’ isn’t usually very high on my list, but I love the way this coat looks – and it even got the approval from my non-horsey partner, who rarely has anything to say about my horse gear!

There are all the usual features you might want and expect with a good riding coat. It has a generous removable hood, an external front pocket at each side, plus one internal pocket – all of which zip up and fit my mobile phone. At the back there are two zips that can be opened to allow more movement in the saddle, if needed, though I found it perfect without opening these.

The coat zips up the middle with a waterproof zip, preventing leaks. The zips all feel well-made, which is something I pay attention to as I’ve had numerous jackets in the past where zips have given up after long-term wear. I like that the coat also has internal cuffs, which are just the right length for riding – though I personally prefer cuffs that are a bit longer and offer thumbholes, which this doesn’t.

In terms of material, the coat has a three-layer stretch material – made from 94% polyester and 6% elastane – and features Ariat’s “Premium DryMax” waterproof breathable construction, “Cool Climate Insulation”, and PFC-free “EcoDry” finish to repel water. I tested the coat riding outdoors in the wind and rain, and with Scotland’s autumn temperatures dropping to seven degrees one morning, I remained pleasantly warm and dry. When winter comes around and the temperatures drop further I feel confident that this coat will be up to the job, and I will provide an update.

One downside I noted, was the coat really seemed to attract dirt – I’m not sure if this is down to the material or the black camo pattern – but the minute I got some mud on it (or a lovely slobber from my mare) they seemed to really get into the material, so I think I’ll find myself washing this coat more than my others. It is machine washable on a delicate cold wash.

The coat comes at a premium price of £290 and therefore I would class this as quite a considered purchase. There are cheaper waterproof riding coat options on the market, but I have always found Ariat products to be well-made and high quality, and I would expect this coat to last many winters.

Verdict

Based on the camo pattern, and the flattering fit alone, this coat has quickly become a favourite. It looks very smart on – and as I’m often walking the dogs, or sheepishly visiting the supermarket still in my horse gear, I’d be more than happy wearing this away from the yard. It has stood up well to the heavy rain and the autumn chill, and I like that I don’t feel restricted in the saddle or doing my general horsey jobs. Being the owner of four mud-monsters, I do worry it’s almost too nice to get dirty – especially as the dirt seems to embed slightly – but for warm riding and style, it gets my vote.

Mountain Horse Flash Deluxe Parka

The Mountain Horse Flash Deluxe Parka is a knee-length coat that I found comfortable to wear while doing tasks around the yard as well as in the saddle for hacking and light schooling.

An added bonus is that the wind and water resistant outer material is impressively reflective in the dark, as shown below. Both the coat and the removable hood have a lightly quilted lining, which makes it ideal for those autumn days when the temperatures are starting to fall away, but it’s not yet bitterly cold.

My first impressions of this coat was that it was not bulky to wear, allowing me to move around easily both while doing chores and when in the saddle. It keeps the chill off, but is not so warm that I felt the need to remove it as soon as I started doing active tasks like poo picking. I’m 5ft4in and a UK 8/10 and had a size small to test. It was a good fit with a decent length, coming down to around my knees, similar to many of the best long winter riding coats. It’s available in XS–XXL.

The hood is generously sized but has good options to adjust the fit to suit heads of all sizes. While I was initially concerned that the “peak” of the hood felt a little flimsy, once I had the hood adjusted correctly it did its job of preventing water dripping down on to my face in the rain.

I really like the wrist cuffs on this coat, which are thin and very stretchy so great for preventing drafts without being restrictive. They don’t stick out beyond the end of coat’s arms while being worn, so stay dry, and there are useful Velcro adjustments on the wrists too.

The two side pockets are of a good size with zips that are easy to open and close one handed. However, I was disappointed there was no phone pocket on either the inside or outside of the jacket at the chest, which I would find useful.

The collar has a soft lining that makes it very comfortable to wear when fully secured. The two-way zip is easy to use with just one hand and it is protected with a storm flap over the top that is secured by press studs with a cover to the top of the zip for added comfort.

The coat has the Mountain Horse logo across the back and is fitted with a single rear riding vent secured with press studs, which is easy to open once in the saddle if you forget to do so before you mount, as shown below.

I’ve ridden out in the Mountain Horse Flash Deluxe Parka in both drizzle/light rain and steady rain for up to about 40mins with absolutely no signs of leakage – my body, arms and thighs all remained bone dry, just my knees got wet as it doesn’t quite cover those. It protected the saddle well too. I also didn’t get rain dripping down the inside of my neck, even though I wasn’t wearing the hood. Bearing in mind it is described as “water resistant”, rather than “waterproof”, I’m very impressed with how well it stood up to the conditions.

The coat dries off fairly quickly when hung up at room temperature.

After a dozen or so rides, I have noticed that the quilted stitching on the inside of the lower part of the coat has started to pill. The stitching remains secure and this doesn’t affect the jacket’s use, but it does make it appear less smart on the inside.

Hy Equestrian describe these Sorrento long boots as “perfect for the competitive or everyday rider”. And they’re not wrong, but they’re also ideal for someone coming back to riding after a long break – me – and for those who have never ridden in a long boot and don’t want to spend a substantial amount of money on a pair of leather boots.

These boots are perfect for road-testing the feel of the best long leather riding boots without splashing the cash. This is because they feature a leather foot and inner calf with a synthetic leather outer that gives a great, tailored fit. I must admit I’d never had a pair of “mainly synthetic” boots before, but the super-softness of the upper eliminates all those hours of breaking in a pair of all-leather boots and gives a really close-contact feel, which really surprised me. I was very impressed.

Sizing

Because I knew that these field boots had more of a pointed toe than I’d been used to in the past – and that the width of the foot was narrower than my last pair of long boots – I opted for a size larger than I normally take. And I was glad that I did because that one size larger made all the difference in terms of a comfortable fit.

First impressions

My first impression of the boots was how smart they looked with their distinct, classic, field-boot laced fronts, and a breathable lining added to the comfort factor and would be great for extra warmth in winter. But how easy would they be to get on? I’d always struggled with the rear zip on the leather chaps I used to wear with my jodhpur boots, but with these I had no need to worry. The zip is robust and doesn’t feel as if it will let you down. And although a little “clunky” at first, all that was required was a hefty tug and a couple of “slides” up and down to get the zip running smoothly. It fastened easily at the top, thanks to the press-button stud. There’s also a useful elasticated back panel that provides a bit of “give” to help bring the edges of the zip together and each boot came with a detachable shoelace-type zip pull to facilitate easier zipping up.

Comfort

As far as hacking and schooling were concerned, they felt extremely comfortable from the get-go. The only thing I was slightly concerned about, given the fact that I’d plumped for a larger size for my wide feet, was if the ball of my foot would sit correctly in the stirrup – as the pointed-toe design of the boots can make them look quite long. But happily, there were no issues there.

The heel of the boots incorporates two rubber spur rests and there’s a push-button spur guard at the bottom of the boot to protect any scuff marks from spurs. And the soles are anti-skid, making them a great choice for competing or schooling, as the last thing you want is any slip-sliding when going over a jump. To put them to the test, I actually braved it over a small jump, the soles’ “grip-ability” passing with flying colours.

Care

What I really love about the boots is how easy-care they are. Obviously the leather foot needs more looking after with a coat of polish and maybe some waterproofing, but the synthetic uppers only need a quick wipe down to keep them clean. They come in sizes EU37–41 (UK 3–7), so are more of a ladies’ boot, in calf sizes 34.5–37cm and height sizes 43.5–46cm.

It’s worth mentioning here that the height sizes are quite generous – I’m 5ft 6in and consider myself to be of average size, but I found that the back of the upper was quite high at the back of my knee. Likewise, the front, which “crinkled” a bit. If, however, these had been all-leather boots, that digging in and crinkling would have been uncomfortable and taken a lot of wearing in, but after a few times riding in them and lots of walking around the yard in them, they soon began to feel more “broken in” and the crinkling became less of a problem.

Verdict

These boots are great value for money and the perfect starter long boot for riders who’ve never ridden in long boots. I loved that they felt light, close-contact and almost an extension of my leg. And I particularly liked the fact that I wasn’t going to be spending hours polishing and shining leather uppers until they gleamed! Cleaning was hassle-free, quick and left more time for the all-important riding!

Review

Lovers of eventing have been crying out for a book which brings us up to date on Badminton’s history – Debby Sly’s great forerunner to this new edition, Badminton Horse Trials: The Triumphs and The Tears, covers only two-thirds of the event’s history now, having been published for the event’s 50th anniversary. This new tome answers that need.

Kate Green, a journalist of huge experience including with Horse & Hound and currently as deputy editor of Country Life, is the ideal author to have taken up the challenge and the result is a delightful book. She takes Badminton decade by decade, giving an introduction to the period’s major changes and trends, and then breaking out into a short section on each renewal of the event. Her flowing prose and ability to pick out the best stories and summarise important themes in a succinct way make this a very easy, enjoyable read.

It is a strength rather than a weakness that this book covers much of the history of eventing beyond Badminton, picking out important developments in the sport, and weaving the history of our major championships into the story – fitting, in the context of how Badminton came about. From the rise and fall of different nations to changes in cross-country course design, the introduction of new formats and the evolution of the modern event horse, this book gives a whistle-stop tour of eventing over the past eight decades.

Kate also introduces us to all the major characters in the sport, bringing them to life with affection and wonderful anecdotes.

Although the more recent history of the event will probably be familiar to many readers, the fact Kate had a front row seat at these Badminton, as either a journalist or a member of the press office team, means these sections are particularly strong.

Verdict

A lovely book to keep on your coffee table and dip into – or read straight through. Either way, Badminton Horse Trials at 75 is a book you’ll want to return to time after time. I love my Kindle, but on this occasion, do buy the hardback so you can really luxuriate in all the gorgeous archive photos.

In 2013 Sue Bathurst went to Kyrgyzstan to ride a horse in the jailoo – the nomads’ mountain pastures. She fell in love with the country, sometimes described as the most beautiful country in the world, and with its people. In this book she not only describes Kyrgyzstan, as it was and is, but tells of four of these horse rides in the Tien Shan and Talas Mountains, travelled with English and Kyrgyz friends.

During those rides they covered 500 miles by horse; crossed 20 passes, most between 9,000 feet and 13,000 feet; negotiated precipitous gorges and boulder strewn rivers of cascading snowmelt. In 2017 they rode for over 150 miles down the no-go zone, once the frontier between the USSR and China, and still the Kyrgyz/Chinese border. Everywhere they were welcomed by the shepherds and their families.

This is not only about a beautiful country, illustrated with over 200 colour photographs, 4 graphs and a colour map. It is about traversing challengingly tricky terrain, far from the possibility of helicopter rescue, and seeing, along the way, how the smallest country in Central Asia is rebuilding itself after 115 years of Russian rule.

Review

This book provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the Kyrgyz nomads for whom the Jailoo is home – and the author who chose to ride hundreds of miles across the incredibly challenging terrain of Kyrgyzstan, far away from any chance of rescue should an injury occur, while in her late 60s and early 70s.

While taking us along during her four different rides across epic landscapes that the less well-travelled can enjoy a glimpse of through the pictures in the book, the author does a good job of explaining the political background to the country and how this influences those living in the region.

There were a few places in the book where the passage of time was not entirely clear, as the writer jumped ahead to the following day without explanation, causing me to go back and reread the previous section to see if I’d missed something, but despite that I found the book an interesting and enjoyable read.

Equestrian readers should also be aware that the horses in the book do undergo moments of hardship, which needs to be considered in the context of the lives lived by the Kyrgyz nomads, so it might not be the ideal choice of relaxing reading for those of a more sensitive disposition.

Verdict

A great coffee table book for aspiring adventurers and those who enjoy traversing the routes less travelled.

Review

I found myself quickly immersed in this book as it whisked me back to my childhood helping out at my local riding school, and riding around the countryside on loan ponies, hacking to local shows and attending pony club rallies with my friends. Later it opened a door on to keeping horses in Canada and the country’s dressage scene, of which I have no first-hand experience, but in which I can see similarities with the aura of certain individuals and the drama linked to some situations here in the UK.

The author writes with an authenticity and honesty about her life – and the horses within it – that is refreshing and relatable throughout. She does not shy away from her mistakes or the darker side of what horse sport can bring out in some people. She is open about the challenges, her own shortcomings, and what she learnt – good and bad – along the way.

The book is broken into individual chapters, each focussed on a specific horse, or in some cases two horses. Some of these relationships are positive, others far less so. The years during which these horses were in the author’s life are given, so it is easy to see which overlap, and how they fit into her childhood through the teenage years into adulthood, married life and beyond. The chapters make the book easy to pick and put down, so it does not need to be read in one sitting. I found myself taking natural breaks at the end of chapters, allowing periods of introspection before picking up the book once again.

As an equestrian I found this book very enjoyable to read, prompting me to reflect anew on what the numerous horses in my life to date have taught – and continue to teach – me. For those outside the equestrian world, I think it gives a genuine insight into what it is about horses that results in them becoming a grand passion in the lives of so many people around the world. It’s heartfelt and moving at times, as the horses reflect the best and worst of the author’s intentions and emotions, shining a light on a relationship that requires absolute authenticity in order to thrive.

Verdict

An engaging and endearing book that is ideal to read over multiple sittings with much to offer both horse enthusiasts and a wider audience.

The riding boots market is a vast one with so many options available, and the Ariat Heritage Contour II Field Zip Tall Riding Boots are a super choice if you’re looking for an all-rounder suitable for various disciplines.

My first impression was how smart the boots look, making them perfect for everyday riding, clinics or competition. They are made from a premium full-grain leather upper, with a full leather lining and Ariat’s 4LR technology. They have an elasticated panel and gusset, and include a moisture-wicking sock liner to keep your feet dry.

The boots come in UK sizes 3–8½ (for ladies’, UK 6–12 for men), four calf sizes from extra-slim to wide, and you have the height choices of short, medium or tall.

I’ve always ridden in short boots and gaiters, and finding boots that I’d describe as super comfortable has always been a bit tricky as my feet are in between sizes, and I have wider calves. Ariat provide a very useful size and measuring guide, and after measuring my legs, I opted for the boots in size 6½, full calf, short height (for reference I am 5ft4in).

When the boots arrived I confess to panicking that I had got my measurements wrong as on the first attempt to get them on I failed and thought they were too small around my lower calves. However after consulting with a wise colleague (our products expert Georgia Guerin), I was advised to enlist a willing helper. The trick was to stand as straight as possible with my feet in the boots and have my helper carefully do up the zips.

As with any leather product, they should fit snugly because over time the leather will stretch and mould to you. Once the boots were on, although they were tight, they weren’t uncomfortably so. They were however quite high at the back of my knee – but again, boots will adapt to you over time and eventually drop as you break them in – and so I was advised heel risers can come in handy to wear inside the boots until they dropped that little bit. Adding heel raisers made a huge difference, especially when jumping with shorter stirrups, and I’ve since been able to remove these after wearing the boots regularly.

It took a little bit of getting used to riding in the Heritage Contour field boots as they felt a little more restrictive than my well-used gaiters, but over time as the boots moulded more to my legs, they became much more comfortable. I think the boots look really nice on and create a lovely streamlined appearance, and I’m particularly looking forward to using them for some dressage and jumping competitions over the winter.

Ariat is a brand I associate with high quality products, and the boots feel well-made, particularly the zip – which doesn’t feel flimsy. The Heritage Contour Field Zip Tall Riding Boot is also available in a lovely brown colour and in a waterproof insulated version aimed at winter riding, so there is plenty of choice.

Georgia has had a pair of these boots for 10 years – she advises that they’ll last well if you don’t walk around in them and always change into a pair of yard boots once you dismount. Even better, store them in one of the best riding boot bags.

Verdict

H&H Approved – I am very pleased with the Heritage Contour field boots, firstly for the fit and good range of sizes available, and secondly for how smart they look. The boots needed a little time to ‘break in’ and mold, as do most leather boots, but quickly became very comfortable. These boots are worth saving up for – and if you look after them, they’ll last you a long time.

Too often horses are labelled “bad” or “naughty” when they are actually in pain. Dr Sue Dyson’s ridden horse pain ethogram – also known as the ridden horse performance checklist – is a list of 24 behaviours that can be used to recognise musculoskeletal pain in horses which are not obviously lame.

As well as covering the background of how and why the ethogram came about, this book focuses on educating equestrians in how to apply the checklist to their own horses, and includes many real-life case studies. It also contains numerous photos showing multiple examples of each of the 24 behaviours being shown by horses, to help equestrians visualise the signs.

The book poses important questions to the reader though out, promoting us to reconsider some long-held assumptions and beliefs we may have about our horses. It also offers advice on where to go next if you find your horse is showing signs of pain when you apply the ridden horse performance checklist, and includes a useful set of FAQs covering a wide range of questions that may cross your mind along the way.

Numerous experts – from vets to farriers to physical therapists to saddle fitters – have contributed their thoughts on ridden horse behaviour to the book, providing additional insight through the lens of their professional speciality.

For an educational reference book, I found the language easy to follow as it doesn’t get bogged down in too much veterinary terminology. That said, there is a lot of information on take on board so I did need to take breaks from reading to give my brain time to process the information being imparted.

I think this is a book that I will return to time and again. It will help me to be become a more informed owner and rider who can advocate clearly on my horse’s behalf when speaking to equine professional about my horse’s well-being.

Verdict

If everyone involved with ridden horses, whether as a rider, trainer or carer, would read this book, the world would be a better place for horses in all situations.

Flex-on Green Composite 2 stirrups H&H Approved

If you are looking for a pair of the best technical stirrups then you have probably already heard of the French company Flex-on. The Flex-on Green Composite stirrups (GC2) are the best-seller of the Flex-on range, and I was looking forward to finding out why.

Having previously spent most of my life riding in traditional bent leg iron stirrups, the GC2 stirrups certainly look very different to what I was used to – and I was quite amazed by how many features could be personalised.

First and foremost, the stirrups promote comfort, and Flex-on states the GC2s help to “provide stability to the leg and enable perfect positioning”, thanks to an offset stirrup leather slot which the company claims “encourages optimum leg position”. The stirrups are shock absorbing, and weigh 800g for the pair.

The stirrups are hot-forged and treated to prevent oxidation, and increase strength and longevity. They are also covered with environmentally-sourced polyamide material.

Personalisation

There’s definitely an element of fun about personalising your kit – and the Flex-on GC2 stirrups not only allow you to choose technical features, but also colours.

You can choose between a standard or ultra-grip tread, and whether your footbed angle is inclined or flat. You then can choose the colour of your iron, tread, shock absorbers, and magnet colours. You can go all out bright and blingy, or more traditional, and the Flex-on website allows you to choose and view your designed stirrups before committing.

I opted for the ultra-grip tread and inclined footbed, with showjumping in mind. When they arrived they were beautifully presented in their box, and there was definitely a bit more excitement opening something you’ve “designed”.

I tried the stirrups on the flat, showjumping and hacking. One thing I noticed was the stirrups felt quite light compared to what I am used to, and on the flat I’m not sure they were quite as supporting as the Sprenger Bow Balance stirrups (that I’ve also tested) – which also encourage a better leg position and balance.

However, the inclined footbed definitely helps your heel naturally stay down, and when jumping and hacking, I felt very secure in my leg. I definitely noticed the shock absorbance of these stirrups when jumping – it’s really a step up compared to basic traditional irons and as someone that can suffer with some aches and pains, I think this will be really beneficial.

The ultra-grip footbed does what is says on the tin, and even when the footbed got sand and grit on it from a few days’ use, it was still super-grippy. I would just urge a little bit of caution when doing up your stirrup leathers as I noticed they can catch on the spiky footbed grips if you’re a little too hasty!

Verdict

H&H Approved – I really like the Flex-on GC2 stirrups for hacking and jumping, where I want that bit more security in my leg and the shock-absorbing performance. For flatwork I found them a little bit light for my liking, but I am happy to switch stirrups depending on what I am doing, as I would with any other equipment. Being able to choose your tread and incline is a massive bonus – and the vast amount of colours definitely adds the fun factor. As well as treating yourself, they would also make a lovely gift. Technical stirrups do come with a substantial price tag, and the GC2s are £185.95 (at the time of testing), but I think this is fair, especially given the customisable options.

What’s in the box?

I was really impressed with the packaging. The box was small, yet contained plenty of different mounting options, the charger and instruction booklet, as well as the camera itself. Everything was very neatly packed, and safe from any potential damage.

It comes with a black helmet strap (hi-vis colours are available separately) and I was really impressed with the strap itself. The inside features a silicone grip, which will grip to any riding helmet. I tried it with a leather-look riding hat as well as a jockey skull with hat silk, and there was no movement or slipping on either – even when turned upside down. I also got hit by a few low branches while riding in the woods. The camera was never dislodged from my hat, but rather the hinge opened and I was able to right it easily with one hand and without removing my hat.

I was having trouble putting the mount together until I found some really helpful videos on the Techalogic website. Once I followed these, it only took me around five minutes to put my camera together on the mount – and once it’s on, you don’t need to do it again. I used the paper instructions to set up the app, which was very easy to use.

Using the Techalogic DC-1 camera

The first time I put my riding hat on with the camera mounted, it felt heavier than expected. However, I double checked the competitors (see the other best riding helmet cameras on the market) and found that actually it was one of the lighter options at just 104g (and my scales weighed the single camera unit at just 98.2g). I think the weight was more noticeable as it is mounted on the side of your helmet, but after a few rides, I soon got used to it and now I don’t notice it at all, so it’s worth persevering.

Once you’re confident with the vibration patterns and lights that indicate on/off, WiFi phone connection and battery power, it’s easy to use – and the easiest way to use it is to just turn it on and let it run. If you only want to record a small section of your ride, you can reach up to press the button and you’ll know that it has started recording thanks to the familiar vibration pattern.

I used this camera while hacking, riding on the beach and cross-country schooling. This battery life is estimated as 2–2½ hours. I managed to get a few hacks out of each charge, so I can confirm it lasted as long as expected. This was great because I didn’t need to take it home every time I rode, but if you’re going on a really long ride, it’s worth taking a power pack or not turning it on until you reach the road or activity you want to record.

Downloading the footage

For me, the app is one of the best parts of using this camera. I’ve seen friends struggling to download clips off other cameras, but this one is really easy to use. All the clips appear on your phone and don’t take up any memory until you download them – and then they automatically are filed in a separate folder so they’re really easy to find.

The camera can connect to your phone anywhere – you don’t need a WiFi of 3G signal to do this. This means you can see what you’re recording to check the angles even in the middle of nowhere or download clips to your phone.

I had selected the setting that cut my ride into three-minute clips – I found this was really helpful as I could pick through and easily find the landmark points in my ride I was looking for.

The footage

The footage I recorded did exactly the job it’s meant to. It’s not the smoothest or clearest video you’ve ever seen. I was able to capture smoother canters on my phone (although riding with one hand is obviously far from ideal) – but if you’re using this to capture roadwork it doesn’t need to be cinema-worthy and you certainly need the handsfree element, so I felt this was a fair compromise as you can’t have it all. I was able to make out number plates when I paused the video and usually if I hadn’t caught a car with one either the front or rear camera, it was caught on the other.

I believe the only times I had problems with poor angles or shots was down to user error – for example, not checking the angle before each recording.

I filmed a sunset ride on the beach and the camera coped really well with the changing light from the low sun. In good light the colours were captured beautifully. It records sound – and this has proved to be really clear unless it’s very windy or you’re cantering or galloping and then you, of course, get a lot of wind noise.

Verdict

This camera’s USP is that it records front and rear views simultaneously. If you’re primarily a hacker and looking for a device to record your time on the roads, this is the camera for you.

I really believe that people who saw me wearing this camera out hacking were more courteous, whether they were in a car or on foot, which certainly added to the value. Electricals will always be pricey, but you’ll be ever-thankful if you capture footage of an accident – and you can use it for fun, too.

Helite Zip’In 2 Airbag with outer gilet and jackets H&H Approved

Helite Zip’In 2 Airbag

The discreet and close-fitting Helite Zip’In 2 Airbag is designed so it can be worn alone, or under an approved outer layer. It has a lanyard trigger system that you attach to your saddle via a supplied strap, which slips over the stirrup bars. This provides a D ring in front of the pommel that I could quickly and easily attach the lanyard clip to using one hand, while holding my reins in the other.

The air jacket is activated when you are separated from the saddle by sufficient distance and velocity to extend the elasticated lanyard to its full length, pulling the keyball out of the trigger, which leads the vest to inflate in less 0.1 second.

*Update: 30 April 2023* I have now tested the air vest when parting company with my horse during a jump training session. The vest inflated as expected, and I was able to remount and continue with my jumping lesson after my fall. I felt the air vest protected my torso from bruising when I fell directly on to the jump. I did not feel winded by the air vest activating.

*Update: 31 October 2023* Having fallen off a number of times while wearing this vest, I now don’t ride my horse without it – whether that’s out hacking, schooling at home, jumping or competing – and in all weathers. It gives me extra confidence while in the saddle to know that I have this added protection should the unexpected happen. The cost of having to replace the air cannister (around £20 each time) is enough to encourage me to try my utmost to stay in the saddle, but on the occasions when I’ve passed the point of no return, I do feel less concerned about hitting the deck and have suffered no serious injuries (only wounded pride and the odd bruise!) as a result of my falls.

Starting with the vest on its own, I was impressed with how lightweight and comfortable it was to wear. My previous experience with an airvest has been wearing a body protector and airvest together, so this feels much less restrictive and far lighter by comparison. However, if you are intending to compete in cross-country competitions, you would need to wear an approved body protector, then you can add an airvest over the top for added protection if you wish. For dressage and showjumping competitions, the airvest can be worn without a body protector. Airvests are also becoming a popular option for the hunting field.

The air canister that inflates the airvest when triggered is concealed into the vest on the right-hand side under a zip (shown below) and, although there is a little weight to it (about 150g for the 50cc cannister), once I was wearing the vest, I didn’t notice it.

The vest is fastened with a front zip and has elasticated mesh sides for a neat fit. It is made from a lightweight technical fabric with a breathable mesh lining, containing the inflatable airbags.

I am a UK size 8 and I am testing the XS size, which carries the 50cc canister. Other size vests require different sized canisters. The canisters are the screw-in type. I found it straight forward to replace the canister following the instructions in the user guide. I recommend keeping both the Allen key and a spare canister to hand so you can replace it as needed following an activation.

For the purpose of this review, I have also been supplied with a selection of outer layers to try. Some of these are designed so the airvest and the outer can be quickly and easily integrated into one garment, via the Zip’In system, which makes them both comfortable and very easy to wear.

Helite Airshell Prestige Vest Outer

This gilet is made from a softshell material, which is water repellent and windproof. I am testing the navy gilet with red/white trim, but it is also available with a black/white trim, and in sizes child L to adult XXL. The RRP starts at £117 for child L.

It has an attractive, sporty appearance that makes it ideal for daily wear outside the competition environment, whether riding at home or out training. I have received positive comments from fellow riders in both situations. It has a soft collar with matching material around the hips and smart piping over the shoulders. There is a discrete opening that the lanyard can be passed through to secure it easily to the saddle.

As one of Helite’s own brand outers, the airvest zips quickly and easily into the gilet, making it a breeze to use as a single piece of clothing. The gilet provides external protection to the airvest and is washable at 30°, which the airvest is not. The gilet has washed well in my washing machine, coming up looking as good as new.

I have worn this outer with the airvest combined for showjumping training, flatwork schooling and hacking. It was very comfortable in all cases. At no time did I feel impeded by the lanyard, or restricted by the vest/gilet. I liked the smart appearance and felt confident knowing that were I to part company with my horse, I would have the protection of the airvest to help me avoid injury. This helped me to remain relaxed in the saddle on occasions when my horse felt a little more spicy than usual!

It was far less restrictive than wearing a combined body protector with airvest and after riding I was cooler than I typically was having had a similar ride while wearing the combined option. I have also worn this outer with the airvest over my body protector while cross-country schooling successfully.

Helite Airjump Jacket Outer

This smart Helite-branded black show jacket is also designed so the airvest can be quickly and easily zipped inside to make it into a single item of clothing. It’s available in black, in child L to adult XXL, with an RRP of £320.

The jacket is fastened with a hidden zip, plus three H-branded brushed silver buttons/press studs in front, with a small disk on the back of the collar.

The jacket has pipped edges, two outside pockets with discrete zip fastenings, and there are two riding vents at the rear. There is a perforated section of material under the arms to improve breathability. It also has the small opening on the front to allow the airvest lanyard to pass through.

My initial impression is that it looks smart and is comfortable to wear. It is machine washable at 30degrees. I have not yet tried it in the saddle.

LotusRomeo for H show jacket

This stylish ladies show jacket is made from an extremely stretchy and lightweight soft mesh material. It is designed to be worn over the top of the Helite Zip’In 2 Airvest, but is not attached to it, leaving two separate garments.

The jacket is fastened by a concealed zip behind four plastic buttons. It has open-topped pockets on the front on both sides, double vent to the rear and the all-important opening to the front to allow the lanyard to pass through.

The fashionable cut is very close fitting, which is further accentuated by the material, meaning it is an attractive choice for a slim figure, but it is less flattering for anyone with natural lumps or bumps that they prefer not to show to the world. It also shows the slight extra bulk of the air jacket more than the black jacket with the thicker material.

I expect this jacket will be a great option for the summer months, thanks to its excellent breathability. It can also be worn on its own without the air jacket if you wish. Although Helite recommend that you wear the same size outer to the air vest, as this jacket is worn as a separate outer, I would recommend sizing up if you prefer a less closely fitted jacket.

Verdict

H&H Approved – Even without the outers, the Helite Zip’In 2 Airbag is a stylish option for anyone wanting extra protection while riding with the minimum of bulk and no restriction. The range of outers, which is far more extensive than those outlined above, makes it a great option for both leisure and competition riders. The only downside I can see is the price, but I believe it is an investment that will pay back in spades when it comes to rider confidence and safety.

Review

Set in the world of Flat racing, this is a fairly simple page-turner of beating the odds, a love story with challenges, and some engaging characters. It is a classic tale of the minnows coming up trumps against the whales of the racing world. For me, it is a little too predictable – I was hoping for more of a twist to keep me on my toes, but some readers love inevitable happy endings, and this has a heartwarming conclusion with plenty of jeopardy along the way.

I loved much of the racing detail, the smells and sounds of the stables, the sensation of galloping horses, pre-race nerves, falling asleep in the lorry in the early mornings all rang so true. The Cornish atmosphere and countryside was beautifully rendered, and I almost felt like I was one of the staff at the Pengellys’ tumbledown yard on the moor. However, some of the details were a bit far-fetched, meaning you had to suspend disbelief – but maybe that’s the joy of fiction, that a Derby-bound colt can gallop through a Cornish bog, soaring over stone walls and skimming over bumpy ground, and their jockey not ride a race for several months before lining up at Epsom.

Many of the personalities were winsome, particularly the Cornish crew. The protagonist, Georgie, is plucky and down-to-earth. However, I found the character of Sam – the ex-boyfriend, champion jockey – too vile to be relatable!

Even though there are some aspects that aren’t perfect, overall it is a fun, lighthearted read. I wonder if it would be best targeted at a young adult readership with that fairytale element of winning impossible races in their dreams, but there is plenty to enthral any horse lover who wants a fun “beach read”.

Verdict

An enjoyable yarn to entertain any horse lover who wants a page-turning adventure set in the racing world.

Review

I loved the start, where the author describes a wonderful hack through the Hampshire countryside. She has an impressive knowledge of flora and fauna, and I enjoyed the eloquent descriptions of frothy blossom, and flowers’ bloom singing “like sirens to the bumblebees”. As a rider myself, I relished reliving the sensation of a lazy hack in springtime among celandines, violets and primroses; the sights, the smells and sounds of winter breaking into spring.

Similarly, the final chapter taps into the essence of the relationship between horse and human. Whole paragraphs are dedicated to the tactile aspect of being with horses – “the velvet nub” of a horse’s nose, with whiskers “drawing in your knuckles like a magnet”. But in between, the chapters are a heavily researched account of the history and culture of horses within the British landscape, veering from Greek and Germanic mythology to coaching inns to the traveller community. It is a little rambling as it covers so much ground, and I personally preferred the more accessible first and final chapters.

She writes beautifully and knowledgeably, but it is a little heavy-going and verbose for those expecting a “joyful gallop through the history of equestrianism”, as touted on the cover. It is more of a long, slow hack, with quite a few obstacles to ponder along the way.

The writer’s background as an environmentalist comes through strongly – and there is a slightly polemical side shadowing the beauty of horses in the countryside, that of man’s effect on our world.

The writer is also an artist, and each chapter opens with a simple black and white drawing, which is a nice touch.

Verdict

An interesting and well-researched read with lyrical detail on nature. Less of a gallop, more of an absorbing hack – a book to pick up, read a chapter and put down, rather than devour in a sitting.

A striking hardback book: large, square and black-and-white, with a simple at-home picture of a girl and her horse on the cover. This is a lavish, chunky and stylish book that brings a touch of class to the coffee table.

This is the sort of aspirational memoir that very few of us will ever have cause to write, but through the pages of this glossy tome, we can taste some of the experiences this extraordinary lady has led. Now in her 90s, Lorie’s joy-filled memoir is a wonderful resumé of the life of a charming, glamorous, American heiress.

Through its 330-odd pages, many of which are full-page photos, quotes or family trees, Jorie puts together the story of her rather magnificent life. She starts before her birth with her paper-making ancestors in Chicago, and goes on through family life, highs and lows, friendship with British royalty, polo successes – as well as the business side. It’s delightful to read, with short extracts describing a certain phase, written mostly by Lorie as well as friends and family, which intersperse the huge, quality photos that dominate the book. Both Lorie and her daughter Reute (who helped produce the book) are professional photographers, and they certainly know what looks good on a large scale, as well as Lorie herself having model looks.

Hers was an enviable life of adventure – of snow sports, flying aeroplanes, global travel, and, of course, horses, which form a thread throughout. Stunning photos of Lorie’s horses, from polo stars to ranch ponies, provide a feast for the equestrian reader’s eyes.

As Lorie herself says: “My life has been filled with incredible adventures, one after another. I have been blessed many times over. I had the great good fortune of walking through so many doors that were opened for me to amazing opportunities and exhilarating experiences. Indeed, I am grateful for every cherished moment.”

Verdict

What a life this lady has led! This gloriously lavish phot0-album style book is a wonderful addition to the coffee table for anyone who enjoys beautiful things, American pioneer family memoirs – and horses.

NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray

I tested the NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray for a one month period, from the end of August until the end of September on a Welsh cob mare in Cumbria.

At the time, her mainstay of exercise was hacking. The UK had been treated to an Indian summer, so even during September pesky flies and insects were still present throughout the day, so a decent fly stray was still an essential part of my grooming kit. I also needed a product that could be applied to her coat while she was out at grass, as while she usually wore a fly rug while she was grazing, I needed something which would go someway in protecting her legs, belly and face area which wasn’t covered by the mesh rug. Alongside this, I wanted a product that I could throw into the lorry ahead of a competition.

Manufacturers NAF claim that NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray offers “all day protection against flies and insect menace” which sounded like the perfect product for me as I needed a solution that would protect in many situations.

The main ingredient marketed is DEET (19%). DEET is an extensively researched active ingredient that is used in many fly sprays for horses, however horse owners should be cautious not to choose anything which has a super-high DEET content before doing a patch test. 19% is a safe level of DEET content and I knew that my horse did not have any allergies to the ingredient as I have previously used sprays containing DEET.

The product comes in three sizes, with three different price points; 750ml for £19.99, 2.5L for £38.99 and 5L for £73.50. I was provided with a 750ml bottle for testing. The bottle was also suitable to be recycled, which was hugely positive.

The bottle was very easy to hold and it was extremely user friendly, being both easy to hold and spray, but also being durable and robust, ideal for busy, working yards where a bottle could easily be knocked over. It would survive being thrown into the lorry without worry that it would leak or spill.

The bottle was also ideal for refilling, with a handy screw cap and a large bottle meaning funnelling new solution into the bottle would be easy. Therefore, it would make sense to try the 750ml bottle initially, before purchasing extra liquid if needed. After a one month period, I still had half the bottle left, meaning the NAF Off Deet Power Performance fly spray provided good value for money.

Out hacking, this spray was effective for a couple of hours while out and about on the roads. The flies stayed away for the majority of the ride and my horse was comfortable while hacking out when we moved onto a bridlepath.

The smell of DEET was prominent. My mare, who is sensitive to scents, wasn’t overly keen on it when it was being sprayed onto her, so I opted to use a sponge to apply the liquid to her neck and face area.

The only issue I would have with this fly spray is that it wasn’t as conditioning on the coat as some of the best fly sprays that I’ve tested, which is something I do like in a spray, especially if used everyday. I wonder if this fly spray could dry the coat out and make it tacky, however this is just personal preference as I show my horses so coat health and condition is priority for me.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – A good all-round fly spray that is effective in many situations, from protecting from pests out hacking, to using just before a competition on a summer day, to applying on exposed areas prior to turnout.

When a product claims to “encourage perfect leg position and balance” it definitely gets my attention. Having ridden in the more traditional bent leg stirrup irons for years, I was very interested to try something that offer more, and the Bow Balance stirrups by Sprenger do just that.

The stirrups feature the Sprenger four-link system technology; and have a safety standard 1,600kg breaking strength. The “bow” aims to reduce the risk of the foot becoming trapped and offers enhanced security, by being able to pivot in four directions simultaneously. The stirrups are also shock-absorbing and claim to be “gentle on ligaments and joints”.

What struck me first is the Bow Balance stirrups’ unique style, with the “bow” shape – and then the rubber in the lower half of the stirrups, and I think they look smart enough for competitions – or everyday riding.

When I first put my feet in the stirrups I definitely felt instantly supported by the extra wide footbed. I was concerned the flexibility of the stirrups might offer almost too much mobility, having been so used to traditional stirrups, but I really liked the feeling they gave me when I was riding. I put them through their paces riding in the arena, field, and out hacking, and in all scenarios they felt very comfortable.

I struggle with some stiffness through my right hip which I’m working on with the help of a physio, and I definitely felt the Bow Balance stirrups helped me secure my right lower leg a bit better. I tend to ride quite short, but I found myself feeling comfortable enough to drop my stirrup leathers down a hole, which was a real positive – and I’m sure my flatwork coach will be happier for this too!

My main discipline is showjumping, and while I definitely like knowing the safety they offer with the 1,600kg breaking strength and the bow reducing the risk of the foot becoming trapped, I do find the stirrups ever so slightly clunkier and heavier than the ones I’m used to – but with that said, I think over time I wouldn’t notice.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – The Sprenger Bow Balance stirrups have won me over, and I would recommend them to others. I think it’s a bold claim that a stirrup can help with leg position, and the cynic in me wondered if they were having a placebo effect, but I definitely have a more secure lower leg when using them and I am interested to see how they feel in a few months down the line. They are quite pricey compared to traditional stirrups (RRP £195) but they sit comfortably in this price bracket alongside other brands of the best technical stirrups.

The situation is tense when she arrives, with difficult relationships between Daniel Ryan – a talented rider but tricky character, with a reputation for breaking hearts even more effectively than he backs horses – and the rest of the team.

The novel follows the ups and downs of the yard, with competitions, horses potentially being sold and the arrival of a rich American pupil. Emma gradually becomes torn between Coach House Stables and her planned future with her solid, reliable boyfriend back at home and has to make some big decisions about her future.

Review

I really enjoyed reading A Matter of Trust and it is clear that author Lucy Ann Huxter knows her stuff about eventing, with accurate progression for the horses through the levels, descriptions of what happens at the events and grassroots events attended and referenced throughout the story as well as bigger competitions. Emma also makes a sensible suggestion of a tactic to try to improve the dressage performance of one of the horses.

I found the story a little slow at the start, perhaps because as a main character Emma seems to lack any clear direction. She doesn’t want to compete, so the novel doesn’t have that as its central driving force, and in fact doesn’t really know what she wants – which is the point of the story in that during the course of the tale she finds herself and a satisfactory future. But initially I found her indecision and rather floaty personality a little frustrating and felt it didn’t hook me in as a reader.

However, the more I read, the more I enjoyed A Matter of Trust and over the final chapters I was well and truly gripped. The ending isn’t a particular surprise – I could predict what was going to happen from very early on – but I was still eager to keep turning the pages.

Verdict

Novels set in the eventing world are few and far between – fans should enjoy this one, which combines an accurate depiction of the sport with a strong story.

Harry Hall All-Weather Long Jacket

This full-length Harry Hall All-Weather jacket has been the perfect addition to my winter riding wardrobe, having never owned a full-length riding jacket before I was apprehensive about it’s performance but I was pleasantly surprised.

The jacket is made from fully waterproof material which, having been caught in a torrential downpour out hacking, I can confirm is definitely waterproof. The material isn’t hugely breathable, so I wouldn’t say it is suitable for milder weather but it’s perfect in the frosty months when you need to be staying warm at the yard or out riding. There are taped seams throughout, ensuring you stay warm and dry.

I am a size 10, and wore a size S, which fitted me perfectly with or without a jumper underneath – the overall fit is flattering and feels stylish and comfortable. You can adjust the tabs on either side, to either make the coat more fitted or a bit looser to your preference. One of my favourite features of the jacket is the elasticated storm cuffs, which make you feel super snug and prevent any water from dripping down the arms. There are plastic fastenings on the end of the sleeves which are a stylish addition.

The back of the jacket features a large vent that can be poppered shut if you are not on a horse. When riding, the vent covered the back of both a dressage and jump saddle very well, and teamed with the two-way zip meant my legs stayed very dry and warm whilst hacking, schooling and warming up at competitions. There are no leg straps on this jacket, which I know some other, more expensive jackets sometimes feature, I was dubious as to whether the jacket would stay put and keep me dry in wind or when galloping but the rigid structure kept it firmly in place, and I wasn’t disappointed with it’s performance.

There are two zip pockets, which I found a little small but fitted my phone and keys well. I found two downsides to the pockets: one was when cantering in a forward seat, with the vent and two-way zip open, my phone did bash against the saddle quite a bit. Secondly, the lining of one of them has torn slightly and my keys tend to get stuck in it, which is a bit annoying.

The coat has a hood that attaches with poppers, I didn’t use it much as I prefer to ride without a hood but for walking the dogs it was useful, and fitted well over a cap. There are a few little reflective details on the coat, I feel it could have featured a panel on the back to aid visibility out hacking or some more details.

I think compared to other long riding coats on the market, this one is quite expensive considering it has less features. However, I was really pleased with the performance of the jacket, it did what it said on the tin and kept me warm, dry and cosy. I would recommend this coat for anyone looking for a hard wearing, practical garment for yard work, riding and country activities.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* – Smart, practical and stylish jacket. I’ve reached for it every time I leave the house – be it for riding, yard work or walking the dog – and it’s lasted really well.

Review

Finding Wonder by Lauren St John is a superbly told adventure story that I found completely enthralling. The plot is rich and the characters are engaging. As in all great detective stories, you never quite know whom to trust, and how the mystery will unravel.

There’s an element of Dick Francis to it, in the skulduggery involved at the heart of a top-level stable yard, though this is set in the showjumping rather than racing world. But there are similarities in a minnow – in this case a 12-year-old orphaned girl and her non-horsey aunt – endeavouring to fix a major crime through their own brain and brawn. As with Dick Francis, the horsey details are authentic and tangible.

I loved the two main characters, the girl and her aunt, they were feisty, brave and intelligent, while the baddies aren’t stereotypical and you have to guess a bit to work out who is the real villain. It ends, as all good adventure stories should, with a rip-roaring chase scene with the goodies coming out on top.

However, the ending isn’t quite the cheesy finale you might expect from a children’s story – and much the better for it. It made for a satisfying conclusion and a gentle moralising touch that money can’t buy happiness (or your dream horse), which is arguably something that readers of all ages need to heed!

Finding Wonder is marketed at nine to 12-year-olds, however I think older children would also enjoy this swashbuckling spin in a fantastical showjumping world – I certainly did.

Verdict

An exciting and dramatic adventure story celebrating friendship, family, and of course horses. Told in a wonderfully immersive style that grips you from start to finish. For me, one of the best horsey books for children.

Review

A delightful and revealing biography, which is told via 12 special horses (the title of each chapter) in Nicky Henderson’s life. Starting with Happy Warrior, “his beloved beserker”, who gave him several memorable wins as an amateur jockey, the book tracks through stars such as See You Then, Long Run, Sprinter Sacre and Altior. Author Kate Johnson has compiled the book together with Nicky, and it is both beautifully and evocatively written.

With Nicky still very much training at the peak of his powers, the all-conquering Constitution Hill only squeaks in as an “afterword” – though crammed with both character and excitement – yet this is a full, personable and bewitching account of the genius that is the six-time champion jumps trainer.

This book is not only revealing for what it tells us about Nicky, his astounding natural horsemanship skills and empathy for the horses in his care, but I loved the input from other greats of the game. Luminaries such as John Francome and Steve Smith-Eccles shed light on various aspects of Nicky’s career, which adds such insight.

We learn about his inspirations, his friends, and those, like Corky Brown, who’ve helped make Nicky into the success story he is. There are also quotes from Nicky’s family, such as his sister sharing the emotion of their mother’s sudden death, so painful even 50 years later. All in all, it provides a thorough and fascinating account of this brilliant man, and wonderful anecdotes about his great horses, their personalities brought to light so beautifully.

Despite Nicky’s incomparable achievements that so few trainers will ever match, his biography has a heartwarming (at times heartbreaking), down-to-earth feel. We live the highs and lows with him, feel his thrills and his pain. Most of all, in an era when antis try to point the finger at racing, it brings home just how much these horses are loved, cared for, cherished – Nicky’s every waking thought for so many decades has revolved around their wellbeing.

While this is a must-read for racing fans, I’d recommend it to anyone who has ever loved an animal. As Richard Phillips says of Nicky’s career: “Before anything else, it’s an emotional relationship between Nicky and his horses… That’s probably why Nicky’s so good at what he does, he gets quite attached to them. All the best trainers are emotional people, wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Being emotional means understanding how horses think.”

Verdict

A thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening read about one of the greatest trainers of all time. It gives brilliant insight to the rollercoaster thrills of Nicky Henderson’s outstanding (and still strongly ongoing) career and the personalities behind some of the biggest equine names in National Hunt history, from the “hell-cat” See You Then to the “glittering athlete” Sprinter Sacre. Sometimes I laughed and sometimes I cried, and it made me feel I loved the greatest game more than ever.
