Olympic legend Bill Roycroft dies aged 96

  • Australian equestrian legend William ‘Bill’ Roycroft died, aged 96, in Victoria on 28 May

The five-time Olympian famously discharged himself from hospital at the 1960 Olympics in Rome with a broken collarbone to jump the final showjumping round.

He jumped clear, using one hand, and secured Australia’s first team eventing gold medal.

The AOC Order of Merit winner carried the flag into the stadium as part of the 2000 Olympics opening ceremony in Sydney.

Bill was also Australia’s oldest Olympic competitor aged 61 in 1976.
