Broadgrove Springtime wins show pony title at HOYS

  • Ann Fowler’s home-bred 128cm winner Broadgrove Springtime clinched the Charlotte Morgan show pony championship at the Horse of the Year Show after giving a lovely mannerly display under the lights in the Andrews Bowen Arena.

Beautifully ridden by Millie Wonnacott, this elegant five-year-old bay mare gave a really good account of herself to impress judges Allan Robertson and David Puttock.

Taryn Rudd claimed the reserve riding the 138cm winner Moluccas Perfect Peppercorn.

    Working hunter

After five wins this year, including the heavyweight division at the Royal International Horse Show, Jo Callwood and Thor registered their first Horse of the Year Show win, producing one of only five clears in the working hunter championship.

Jo is in her fourth season with the Concorde 10-year-old, and she was delighted to chalk up her first clear here.

“The track was tough enough, but he didn’t have a bad fence anywhere,” said Jo, who finished ahead of Libby Cooke and Tim Fairburn riding William Bonney II and Franks Blue River.

    Search for a Star

Angharad Fisher and I’m Clover Too claimed the South Essex Insurance Brokers Search for a Star championship.

It was a high-class eight strong championship field that came before Marjorie Ramsay and Robert Oliver. Angharad’s show hunter pony champion certainly rose to the occasion during a wonderful free style show.

“They gave it their all. This was a lovely stamp of pony, very proficiently ridden,” said Marjorie Ramsay.

Although kept busy with her GCSE exams this summer, Angharad squeezed in the BSPS summer championships and Equifest as preparation for this final.

“Nothing fazes him, he just loved all the atmosphere,” said Angharad.

Taking the reserve was Patricia Saxby riding her riding horse winner Play It Cool.

Earlier in the morning, the final ticket to the SEIB Search for a Star championship went to Georgina Humphrey, who is just six months into her partnership with Malins Amiro. The Irish-bred eight-year-old headed a strong hunter section, and Georgina hopes to progress to open classes next season.
