  • Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania has been released from hospital after a bad fall the day after his Aintree victory.

The 23-year-old became the first Scottish jockey since 1896 to win the famous race, when he and 66-1 shot Auroras Encore passed the post first on Saturday (6 April).

But on Sunday (7 April) he took a crashing fall from the Sue Smith-trained Stagecoach Jasper at Hexham. He was kicked between the shoulder blades by another horse and attended by doctors on course for 30min before being airlifted to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Ryan spent two nights in hospital but was released today (Tuesday 9 April) after an MRI scan revealed just minor injuries.

He was found to have a small fracture to his C7 vertebra and soft tissue and ligament damage, but has said he hopes to be back racing soon.

A homecoming party is due to be held in his honour in Galashiels tonight.
