Grand National winner Auroras Encore retires

  • The 2013 Grand National winner Auroras Encore has been retired due to a leg injury.

    The 12-year-old, who was last year’s surprise 66-1 winner, fractured a bone in his leg during the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster on Saturday (25 January).

    He finished 9th in the race on Saturday and had an operation on Tuesday (28 January) to stabilise the fracture.

    Trainer Sue Smith, who is married to legendary showjumper, Harvey, said Auroras Encore would not race again.

    “These things happen. I just want him home to have a happy retirement,” Sue Smith told the press.
