  • Adrian Maguire has joined an elite band of jockeys after riding his 1,000th winner

Adrian Maguire finally became the seventh jump jockey in history to ride 1,000 winners at Carlisle on Thursday.

Twenty four hours after receiving a six-day ban for striking another jockey with his whip, Adrian booted home Flori in the handicap hurdle to join the elite band of jockeys in the 1,000 Club.

The other jockeys who have achieved 1,000 winners are Richard Dunwoody, Peter Scudamore, A P McCoy, John Francome, Stan Mellor and Peter Niven.

Tough, determined and ever the horseman, Adrian, 30, threw his whip into the Carlisle crowd as he returned on Flori and smiled: “I am proud and relieved to have got to 1,000.”

In a pique of frustration at Wetherby on Wednesday Adrian had hit fellow jockey J P McNamara after coming off worst in a tight finish. He was giving vent to his annoyance at being stuck on 999.
