The London borough where the equestrian and pentathlon competitions of the London 2012 Olympic Games will take place becomes a Royal Borough next week.

The Queen will bestow the status of Royal Borough upon Greenwich on 3 February — making it the first borough to be granted Royal status in more than 80 years.

The borough will receive its "letters patent", a legal document signed by the Queen, that day.

The equestrian competitions start in Greenwich Park on 28 July with the Olympic three-day event, and run until the final day of dressage on 9 August.
