Avon Vale hunt master Stuart Radbourne won the 2014 Countryside Alliance Race for Repeal at Ascot on Sunday (30 March).
Stuart romped home 14-lengths ahead of Joshua Cameron, huntsman of the Wilton.
Stuart, who also hunts the Avon Vale hounds, only sat on the Richard Hannon-trained, Red Refraction for the 1st time 3 days before the race.
And the 4-year-old colt gave him such a confidence-giving ride, he now wants to do another charity race.
“A bus-load of people from the hunt came down to Ascot for the race and we partied hard after my win,” said Stuart, who is a former point-to-point jockey.
“I really enjoyed it and hope to do another charity race, maybe at Newmarket [30 May].”
The 7 jockeys in the race were each loaned horses by trainers. Mark Bycroft, huntsman of the Old Surrey Burstow and West Kent came home in 3rd place.
The riders have raised over £10,000 between them to help the CA’s fighting fund for repeal of the Hunting Act.
The race was part of a country fair race day run by Ascot. “It was fabulous to see so many hunt supporters turning out to support their hunt masters and staff,” says the CA’s Sara Rutherford.
