William Funnell claims his first GCT podium

  • Britain’s William Funnell earnt his first Longines Global Champions Tour podium on Saturday evening when finishing second in the grand prix on Billy Congo to Germany’s Marcus Ehning and Plot Blue.

Marcus steered his 16-year-old stallion immaculately round the sharp bends in a competitive five-rider jump-off to land the €94,050 first prize under the floodlights.

“Today was my day and I am very happy,” said Marcus. “I know my horse well — he is unbelievable.”

But this great combination was given a good run for their money by the British partnership.

“He just seems to have got better and better,” said William of his home-bred 12-year-old stallion son of Vechta.

The Netherlands’ Maikel van der Vleuten took third with VDL Groep Verdi.

Earlier in the day, Ben Maher recorded a British win in the speed class on the phenomenal Aristo Z.
