Who will win Olympia’s riding club quadrille?

  • Saffron Waldon Riding Club will attempt to win the BRC Quadrille at Olympia for the second year running.

    The British Riding Clubs Quadrille final takes place at Olympia on Saturday 22 December. Sponsored by South Essex Insurance Brokers, the selection trial was held at Addington Equestrian Centre in October.

    Ten teams came forward for the selection trial, including two from Saffron Waldon.

    The four teams selected to go forward are;

  • West End RC as American Indians

  • Saffron Walden RC as The Horseman of the Apocalypse

  • Faversham RC with Invitation to the Dance

  • Ardingly RC as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

    The quadrille is now in its 10th year and has become a favourite at Olympia.

    Each team of four chooses a theme, which in the past has included Robin Hood, Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz.

    Costumes, music, dressage movements and riding skills are all assessed during judging. Marks are awarded for appearance, content of programme, performance and general artistic impression .

    Saffron Walden RC, who won last year and in 1998, and the 1997 victors West End, will be under pressure from Faversham, who will be looking for a win after finishing second last year. The main contender will almost certainly be Ardingly, led by Quadrille “specialist” Deirdre Robinson who has competed in the competition for many years.

    Head of marketing for SEIB, Nicky MacKenzie said: “The Quadrille is a unique competition for riding club members. It demands riding ability, flair andimagination together with showmanship and, perhaps most importantly, teamwork. South Essex Insurance Brokers, which is always a supporterof amateur and leisure riders, is very happy to give them our support.”
