A group of five engine-revving equine vets set off on a 3,000 mile charity journey yesterday (Tuesday 22 August).
The “Vets with Horsepower” were waved off from the Royal Mews at Buckingam Palace as they began their journey on motorcycles across Europe and North Africa in support of SPANA.
During the two week challenge, they will be giving training lectures at eight veterinary schools in return for donations. They aim to raise £125,000 to help SPANA (the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad).
Money raised will pay for new diagnostic and surgical equipment for SPANA’s veterinary clinics in Mali and Mauritania.
Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes was on the start line to see them off, and praised the group for their endeavors, adding that the work of charities like SPANA is vital for supporting the livelihoods of families and communities.
Vets with Horsepower founder Professor Derek Knottenbelt said: “We are incredibly grateful to Her Majesty for allowing us to start our journey from the Royal Mews, home to horses that enjoy the very best standards of equine welfare.
“We want all working animals to be as well-cared for and we hope that people in the UK and at our veterinary talks abroad will donate generously to help working animals in Mali and Mauritania have a better future.”
