Tributes paid to a much-loved joint-master

  • More than 700 people turned out to pay their respects to Mid Antrim Harriers joint-master Andy Hamilton on 2 December, who has died at the age of 52.

Mr Hamilton, who had suffered from cancer for six years, was a well-known figure in Ireland. He was involved in working hunters, pointing, showing and team chasing. He also sold many Irish hunters to England.

“Andy was a wonderful horseman and never stopped coming up with new ideas to help the hunt,” said treasurer Patsy MacCarthy-Morrogh.

Mr Hamilton followed the hunt by quad bike when he was no longer strong enough to ride and, on the Saturday before his death (30 November), had hosted a meet at his farm in Broughshane.

He was delighted that his son Joe was now whipping-in for the hunt, she added.

This story first appeared in H&H 12 December 2013.
