The equine community is being called to help develop recognised standards – National Occupational Standards (NOS) – for equine dental technicians.
The sector skills council for environmental and land-based industries, Lantra, is asking for participation from all areas of the equine and veterinary sector to help improve these standards.
NOS describes what workers need to do to carry out their job competently. They also provide the foundation to build qualifications that reflect best practice.
“We are calling for all interested parties to take part in our consultation and ensure that they are driven by the welfare of horses,” said Lantra’s Lisa Jarvis.
The project will include on-line consultation to allow access to people across the UK.
President of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Ben Mayes said he welcomed this.
“It will allow equine dental technicians to develop their status and training and ensure the boundaries agreed with the veterinary profession are respected,” he said.
