Owner calls for tougher sentences for horse attackers

  • The owner of a horse who was attacked with a meat cleaver by two 19-year-old men has reacted with anger to news that one of the teenagers has had his sentence reduced.

Maggie, a 16-year-old mare, (pictured right) was attacked in her field in Essington, Wolverhampton in April last year.

After admitting causing unnecessary suffering to the horse, Matthew Corfield was sentenced to five months in a young offenders’ institution, but has since been released after eight weeks.

Maggie’s owner Davina Bowyer said: “I am appalled by the leniency of his sentence. I worked hard with the police to bring these youths to justice.”

Miss Bowyer is campaigning for tougher sentences for people who abuse horses and has set up a petition to send to prime minister Gordon Brown.
