New award recognises top event riders

  • British Eventing (BE) has unveiled a new series, culminating in an end-of-season award, to recognise successful British riders and their owners.

The series, entitled the Britannia League, will reward the top 3 highest-ranking horse and British rider combinations that have not competed under the British flag at senior championship level.

Points can be accumulated throughout the 2014 season at CIC3* and CCI3* in Britain, plus Nations Cup competitions.

The winning rider will receive a £5,000 bursary, while the runner-up will get £3,000 and third, £1,000. The leading owner will be presented with a bronze trophy.

The initiative has been backed by long-term eventing supporter and owner, Nigella Hall, who has horses with Harry Meade.

She said: “I have had some fantastic times in the sport over the years and thought it would be wonderful to put something back.

[We have an] enormous depth of talented riders at the top level and I wanted to find an opportunity to acknowledge the talent we have beyond the senior team.

BE will be posting regular Brittania league updates on its website.
