Hundreds of gentle giants to descend on the UK

  • More than 250 Shire horses from across Europe are expected to descend on Lincolnshire next spring.

The Shire Horse Society is returning to Arena UK in Lincolnshire for its 2015 annual show on 21-22 March.

“The Shire Horse Society’s annual show is the perfect place to see these magnificent gentle giants of the horse world and find out more about the breed,” said Shire Horse Society secretary David Ralley-Davies.

“It is the largest event of its kind in the world, and is a chance to celebrate a breed that was once in danger of dying out but is now experiencing a resurgence in popularity — both as a working animal and a riding horse.”

There will be classes for in–hand, ridden and best turned out with the championship held on the Saturday evening.

The show runs from 8am to 10pm on Saturday and is open from 8am until 4pm on the Sunday.

Sponsors for the event include botanical brewers Fentimans, Fullers Brewery, Young’s Brewery, Boldscan and Fosters Foods.

Day tickets will be £10 and £8 for concessions on the gate.

Members of the Shire Horse Society are given free admission on presentation of their society badge.

The Shire Horse Society has been working since 1878 to protect the breed once known as the Old English Breed of Cart Horse.

It is the only charity dedicated to the protection, promotion and improvement of the Shire horse.
