Horse saved from water-filled ditch

  • Firemen had to rescue a horse stuck in a water-filled ditch in a village in Somerset earlier this week (15 July).

The horse was found in the ditch, which was more than 4ft deep with water, at 7pm.

When the fire engine and specialist rescue team from Bridgewater arrived, the horse had been blindfolded to keep it calm, and its owner had called the vet.

A local farmer lent some lifting equipment to help with the rescue.

“The horse was released unharmed from the ditch, using strops and hydraulic lifting equipment,” said a spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and rescue service.

The horse was kept in the village of Kingsbury Espicopi, on the River Parrett, which was badly affected by the flooding this winter.
