Josh Gifford, the trainer of 1981 Grand National winner Aldaniti and father of event rider Tina Cook has died.

The former four-times champion jockey, who was 70, died this morning (Thursday 9 February) of a heart attack. He had been suffering from ill-health for some time. In October H&H reported that he was being treated in hospital for septicaemia.

The story of Aldaniti, famously ridden by Bob Champion, who was recovering from cancer, was made into the 1983 film “Champions”.
