Five elite premiums at Southview Futurity

  • Five youngsters were awarded elite premiums at the Baileys Horse Feeds/British Breeding/British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Futurity held at Southview Equestrian Centre in Cheshire at the weekend (9 – 10 August).

Topping the scores on day one was colt foal Samphire (San Amour x Bergamon) (pictured above) owned by Sandra Tinker, with an elite premium of 9.41. Across two days of evaluations, Sandra from Fosshey Stables in Antrobus took a total of seven potential dressage horses, scoring two elite premiums and five higher firsts.

She said: “He has such a personality and we thought he would do well as he has great presence and is a mini horse already.”

Samphire will be going to the Hanoverian championships at the end of the month at Hartpury. His dam, Bea has bred several foals for Sandra with a very consistent Futurity record; all have scored higher first premiums and her now three-year-old, Don Diego (by Don Ricoss) scored an elite premium as a foal.

Also gaining an elite premium for Sandra was yearling gelding, Fortunatus (Floriscount x Der Lord).

Sandra said: “We didn’t take Fortunatus to the Futurity as a foal and I am thrilled that he has attained an elite premium as a yearling. We plan to keep him and produce him.

“He is the closest we have bred to having natural grand prix material.”

Fortunatus was champion foal at the Hanoverian Championships last year.

Janie Parkinson’s filly foal, White Mischief (Woodlander Wavavoom x Don Juan de la Bouverie) (pictured top) scored an elite premium of 9.13 in the dressage section.

Janie said: “I am so chuffed as she was an unplanned foal. We took another mare to Twemlows for an embryo transfer foal and White Mischief’s dam, Lady de la Bouviere was meant to be the recipient mare.

“We failed to get the other mare to take and so decided to put Lady de la Bouviere in foal to Wavavoom and White Mischief was the result.

Janie has had a tough time over the last few years and spent six months in hospital having spinal surgery, she added: “White Mischief has really got me feeling good about things. I smile every time I think about her gaining her elite premium”.

Sue Jagger and Brian Thompson’s Millfield Stud in Settle had great success on day two of evaluations at Southview, taking home two elite scoring three-year-olds from the jumping section.

Sue said: “We are very pleased with Gizelle, she had never left the yard before and performed beautifully.”
