New venue for BE under 18 championships

  • British Eventing’s (BE) under 18 championships will now be held at Frickley Park.

The National Saddle Centre BE100u18 regional team championships and the KBIS ONu18 regional championships will be held at the South Yorkshire venue in July 2016.

BE cited the venue’s accessibility and existing facilities as reasons for their choice.

“I am delighted to announce, that after much deliberation, BE has decided to select Frickley Park,” said Jane Peters, chairman of BE’s national under 18 programme.

“Some of the key factors that we had to consider in this selection were the location, accessibility as well as looking at existing facilities. Frickley Park is not only a stunning location but also very well located just off the A1 near Doncaster, so it’s an excellent central location for those coming from around the country.

“The estate already hosts a popular BE event so the infrastructure is already well tested for such big championship event. There will be a Mark Phillips-designed one-star track ready for 2016, as well as onsite temporary stabling and excellent spectator facilities.”

The event will take place by permission of Charlie and Jayne Warde-Aldam who own Frickley Park.

The family are passionate equestrians and their daughter Connie has recently been shortlisted to represent Britain on the Charles Owen pony squad at this year’s European championships.

BE chief executive David Holmes thanked all the venues that took part in the bidding process for the under 18 championships.

“We were in an extremely lucky position to choose from stunning locations with very enthusiastic organisers who wanted to support these important championships,” he said.

“I would also again like to thank Janet Plant and her team for their dedication to running the championships at Weston Park from the very beginning.”

Horse & Hound reported that the championships were moving away from Weston Park earlier this year (April).

The decision followed a recommendation from the BE sport committee that BE has a responsibility to provide these championships at a time that does not compromise the members’ education, which was ratified by the board.

Weston Park’s autumn fixture (8-11 October this year) falls during term time.
