When Elaine Place won Search For A Star at the Horse of the Year Show six years ago with Urishay, her love of showing was kindled. Two years ago she bought Red Andes from Valerie Redbart, who breeds coloureds and show jumpers including Magic Max. The five-year-old, partnered by Jayne Webber, headed the non-native coloured horses to give both Jayne and Elaine their first HOYS coloured title.
Jayne's coloured success came thick and fast as she also headed the native horse section with Carol Bardo and Mandy Hughes' The Humdinger, who was second here last time. The six-year-old cob, who was supreme coloured at the British Show Horse Association championships, has collected 15 titles this term in coloured, cob and in-hand divisions.
"This will be my first time under the spotlight," said Mandy. "Jayne had said earlier that she would do her best to get me a ride in the main arena."
Sarah Hollinshead's Longdon Domino headed the native ponies with Jill Wormall and took reserve after a storming gallop. They also took the title at the RIHS earlier in the year.
"Sarah is the daughter of racehorse trainer Reg Hollinshead," said Jill, "so I think Domino's been taking lessons."
Hayley Hyde-Andrews is more used to cobs and polo ponies, but Wendy Gibson partnered Hayley's Majestic Cavalier to take the Arab title.
"I qualified last year and we were fifth," said Hayley, "which made me think he had potential. With Wendy he has had six wins out of six and this is the seventh, but it is the icing on the cake."
Judith Evan's Toman took the title two years ago with Ann Hooley, and returned to head the stallions and stand reserve. The stallion has only had three outings this season and took titles at Three Counties and British National supreme champion.
