61-year-old pointer Godfrey Maundell wins at Leicester

  • Pointing stalwart Godfrey Maundrell, who rode his first three-timer in four decades of raceriding earlier this season, won the Dick Saunders novices’ hunter chase on Lisadell King at Leicester yesterday (Wednesday 17 February) — at the age of 61.

Mr Maundell who owns and trains winner Lisadell King, won by 29 lengths.

Last month Mr Maundell scored his first treble with Maglinn River, Spiders Nephew, and Lisadell King at Larkhill in Wiltshire.

Godfrey rode in his first point at Hackwood Park in 1971 on a horse called Electrik.

“Electrik’s owner was Jeremy Robb who four or five years ago put up a cup for the best owner rider at Larkhill,” Mr Maundell said. “It’s called the Electrik Cup and I was the first one to win it.

“It was two seasons before I got the first winner, on a horse called Lafitte at Badbury Rings. She was a five-year-old maiden and there were no mares’ allowances then. She would have been carrying 11 stone these days, but it was 12 stone 7lb then.

“I only had 37 rides in my 20s. That’s why I’m going on so long, to make up for all those missed rides earlier on,” he added.
