An apprentice jockey from Ireland has been killed in a “freak accident” on the gallops.
Twenty-one-year old Ronan Lawlor died yesterday morning (Tuesday 16 February) when he was thrown from a horse.
Ronan was working horses at his neighbour Pat Fahy’s yard in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow.
It was reported that the horse Ronan was riding veered right and as he attempted to correct it he was thrown into post and rail fencing.
Ronan has been described by trainer Pat Fahy as “one in a million”
Mr Fahy told the Racing Post: "The horse just took off on the gallops with him. When he tried to pull him back he was thrown into the post.
"I cannot quite believe it. It's devastating as he was like family to me. My son Connor and he were such good friends."
Ronan suffered severe head injuries. He was attended by an ambulance but despite attempts to revive him he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital for post mortem.
It was described as a “tragic accident” by the Gardai.
