The Irish showjumping team has pledged to donate any prize money won at the Nations Cup in Abu Dhabi on Friday (February 5) to the relief effort in Haiti.

Irish chef d'equipe Robert Splaine said that riders had been struck by the devastation caused by the Haitian earthquake on 12 January and wanted to make a contribution.

First prize in the Nations Cup is €30,000 with €20,000 for second place and prize money down to €6,000 for sixth place.

Eleven teams are expected to take part in the competition.

The Irish contingent is Cameron Hanley, Dermott Lennon, Cian O'Connor and Billy Twomey.

And riding for Team GB are Guy Williams, Robert Whitaker, Ben Maher and Ellen Whitaker.

The Abu Dhabi Nations Cup begins at noon GMT on Friday.
