Injured teen sees her horses for first time since awaking from a coma

Teenage event rider Kate Hunter has seen her horses for the first time since awaking from a coma.

Fourteen-year-old Kate is recovering in hospital after a fall during the cross-country in a British Eventing (BE)90 competition at Bishops Burton Horse Trials on 30 May.

Kate fell from Seagull Silver Lady and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary where she spent more than two weeks in a coma.

Kate, from Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, suffered head and leg injuries but is back walking and talking again.

On Sunday Kate’s parents Ian and Sue visited her in hospital — and brought her horses Seagull Silver Lady and Boynton Girl with them.

Her father Ian told the Grimbsy Telegraph that Kate hopes to be getting back in the saddle as soon as possible.

"One of the first things she asked when she came round was how her horses were. She loves them,” he said.

"She can't remember anything about the day of the fall. She has no recollection at all of what happened, or getting ready to go there.

"She has made amazing progress, and can walk with assistance and talk. There is still a long way to go, but she is doing very well. If she continues progressing as she is, she could be home in three weeks."

This was Kate’s first year competing in affiliated competition, and she had previously completed four BE90 competitions.

A spokesman for BE said: “Following an update we had last week, Kate is making good progress and is up and walking with some assistance, which is fabulous news”.
