Market Rasen racecourse has launched its annual search for a young National Hunt jockey to be the next Tom Halliday Memorial Scholar.
The scholarship was set up for conditional jockeys as a way of remembering Tom, who died after a fall at Market Rasen in 2005.
Winners of the award, which have in the past included Phil Kinsella and James Halliday, will receive advice and support in areas such as schooling, nutrition and media training.
Members of the public, as well as racing professionals, have until Monday 19 September to nominate a young conditional jump jockey with the winner announced at the racecourse on 24 September.
Tom died at the Lincolnshire track in July 2005 when his mount, Rush’N’Run, lost balance and fell heavily on him.
Managing director of the racecourse Pip Kirkby said: “This award means a lot to those who receive it, and we intend to include the views of jockey Dominic Elsworth, a long time friend of the Halliday family, as well as Tom’s brother James, in deciding who should be the next scholar.
“Our racegoers are knowledgeable and supportive and I hope they, as well as trainers, jockeys and others in the sport, will nominate potential scholars.
“The most important thing, to us, is that the recipient comes from an area where he or she would hope to pick up rides at Market Rasen during the year.”
