Blenheim Horse Trials has been cancelled following heavy rain at the Oxfordshire venue during Friday afternoon and evening.
Event director Mandy Hervieu said: "Due to the deteriorating conditions and the amount of rain we have had in the past few hours, we have decided to cancel the event. The health and safety of riders, and members of the public, is paramount.
"We have done everything we can to keep the show on the road, but it is not safe to allow horse and riders around the course, or to let the general public walk up and down the walkways."
Mandy paid tribute to the work of Blenheim course builder Eric Winter and his team, who had worked tirelessly to ensure the event could go ahead, but said they had to eventually accept defeat on Friday evening.
