Two horses in Herefordshire have been attacked in what members of the local Horsewatch group and the owner say could involve witchcraft.

The mane of a 10-year-old Welsh Cob was cut off and left at the scene in Upper Sapey, near Worcester, on 15 August, while a second horse suffered cuts near the mane, possibly sustained from scissors.

Police are examining a pair of scissors found near the scene.

Owner Amy Jones said the horses are traumatised: "It was very strange. There were marks on their faces. One had a strange L-shaped mark cut on its face.

"It was a full moon. This could well involve someone doing a black magic ritual with the mane, which was cut up. "

A police spokesman said the incident might be related to another at Upton Bishop, near Ross-On-Wye on 3 August when three horses had their manes cut off.

Ali Cann, chairman of Herefordshire and Shropshire Horsewatch urged local horse owners to join the group and share information.

She said: "Horse people need to act together and share information, particularly at the moment it is vital."

If anyone has further information call West Mercia Police on 08457 444888.
