Hunting protest makes its mark


  • Country sport workers held a “meet” in Central London yesterday as part of the Countryside Alliance’s “Summer of Discontent”

    Union of Country Sport Workers gathered in London’sSmith Square in protest over the government’s plans to ban hunting.

    More than a 100 members rode into Smith Square followed by foot supporters and packs of hounds to hold a protest “meet” about the government’s plans to ban hunting.

    Countrylife.co.uk’s Holly Kirkwood described the scene as “chaotic’. She said: “About a hundred horses clattered past from Smith Square with a lot of hounds – police were trying to stop the horses and the hounds.”

    According to newspaper reports two hunt supporters were arrested.

    A union spokesman said: “We have had an overwhelming response in support of this meet.”

    The protest meet forms part of the Countryside Alliance’s “Summer of Discontent”.
