Q: I am starting to introduce more carriage-based flatwork with my five-year-old show jumper. She's jumping well at discovery level, but my trainer says I need to develop her flatwork to get her working correctly and safely develop her muscles.

I have heard about a new lungeing device that replicates the rider's hands - what is it and where can I get one?

Saddle manufacturer Devoucoux has introduced a new training device that could help your mare.

The Gymer has been designed to encourage horses to work gymnastically on the lunge - it aims to develop carriage correctly through repetitive training and education.

How does it work?

According to Devoucoux, the training aid encourages a softer, more elastic outline, and establishes stronger top-line muscles; in effect, replicating the rider's hand.

It has two tension options in the elastic; the first is for younger, less experienced horses, and the second is for more established animals.

As you obviously have regular lessons, it would be a good idea to discuss your specific aims with your trainer and use the Gymer within a tailored programme of flatwork and jump training.

This will help improve your mare's overall gymnastic ability.
