Kicking the habit - windsucking and box walking
6 October, 2000
WindsuckingWindsucking often follows on from a crib-biting problem.
Placing a leather strap around the top of the neck can control most windsuckers. This seems to work by preventing the animal from arching its neck.
Box walking
Box walking or "pacing" is a symptom of a bored, stressed horse. If the condition is allowed to develop, the animal may cause severe damage to the ligaments and tendons of its legs.
One of my clients recently found an effective way to treat this disorder. She bought a large empty plastic beer barrel and had several holes bored into it. The vessel was then filled with pony nuts and the horse was able to extract the feed over a period of hours. Care has to be taken not to make the holes too large or too numerous, which would allow the feed to be taken too quickly, or too small to make the task almost impossible.
