Re: Are colic exclusions unfair?
Most Insurance companies include emergency colic as part of the policy, they normally only exclude it if the horse has suffered colic and a claim has been made. If time has passed and the horse hasn't suffered any bouts of colic, it can be possible for an exclusion to be lifted from the policy, with a vets letter. I can sort of see why there are exclusions as for example if a horse had bad colic and had surgery and the insurance company pays out 5k for treatment, then you would expect it to be excluded as the horse is a higher risk to the insurers. Yes colic can happen at any time and a horse need treatment, but sometimes and not always it is a management issue.
I do think though insurers need to be more reasonable when it comes to the amount of time the exclusions are in place for- that goes for colic and other things too, ie lameness etc etc.
