Default AES Graded (Registered) Stallions

I wonder if any one has the answer to this question. If a stallion is graded with AES and given registered status, the rules state that the stallion can only cover the stallion owners mares, up to a maximum of 10 mares per season.

So why am I seeing so many AES graded (registered) stallions being actively advertised, both on the internet and in popular equine publications.

I have wondered this myself. I have put it down though to the fact that you can just issue standard stud certs but not sure tho.

So if these stallion owners are issuing their own covering certificates, which societies are accepting them for foals registration.

This has been my issue with the AES for ages and it comes down to the fact that mare owners dont ask enough questions when speaking to studs. I think you will find that the owner of the stallion will own the mare for a short time and sell it once in foal with 1 of the 10 covering certs! Also an interesting fact when I used a fully approved AES stallion, the offspring was issued with a full passport without any DNA from foal or mare so if that had been a mix up with the semen no one would be aware.

It seemsall stud books have their pitfalls, but the AES does need to tighten its belt more than some others.

The Future, that is indeed a loophole!

I had my stallions registered with SHB and not AES for a couple of seasons, EVERY mare owner complained that 40 quid extra for DNA'ing was extra money they didn't want to spend - you can't win!!
Also when I had them dual registered, AES take SHB certs and vice versa!!

This is taken from the AES website the 10 certs only apply to;
Registered This is the basic level of grading and normally young stallions attending their first grading would enter at this level if graded. Registered Grade stallions can cover up to 10 of their owner's mares per annum.

Licensed At this level your stallion should be competing in age classes and can cover up to 30 mares per annum.

Approved This is the maximum level of grading and usually applies to stallions competing or that have competed at an International level. Also with proven offspring. Approved Grade stallions can cover an unlimited number of mares.
Approved Elite Stallions are given Elite status subject to the judges' discretion and based on proven competition and offspring success at the highest level.

whioch is exactly why most other studbooks regard Registered AES stallions as not being effectively graded as all they are approved for is use on the stallion owner's mares rather than licenced or approved for wider use. Apparently the logic behind this is that the stallion owner will use the stallion on their own mares anyway (regardless of graded status :-() but it does not really help much with upgrading of breeding stock in the long run <sigh>. And of course, as has been said elsewhere in the thread the convention of decribing AES regsitered stallion sas graded is just plain confusing for mare owners, but as it has never been challenged by Trading Standards it still continues.

Am I right in thinking that all these stud books are open and you can register anyway?

It can be a bit confusing without reading the full information, so can I sugest that you check out the Ango European Studbook website for info on the stallion registration and gradings, and criteria for registration. I have used AES registered and registered/graded stallions over the last 3 years without any problems. But then I have done thorough research on the bloodlines. The AES has stallions crossing Europes top bloodlines. The Studbook have been meticulous in their information requirements for foal registration, I was impressed!!
I think the plethora of advertising is down to competitive advertising rates from the publications, combined with agressive marketing from the studs faced with a recession. I'm seeing advertsing for a wide range of stallions, not just WB types.
